EDMUND MACH UN UOMO CHE SAPEVA GUARDARE LONTANO EDMUND MACH A MAN OF FORESIGHT Nel 1874 La Dieta di Innsbruck scelse come direttore il dottor Edmund Mach, austriaco, allora giovane e brillante assistente della stazione di ricerca dell’Istituto enologico e pomologico di Klosterneuburg.

In 1874 the Diet of Innsbruck chose the Austrian doctor Edmund Mach as Director. At the time he was a young and brilliant research assistant at the Oenological and Pomological Institute in Klosterneuburg.

Edmund Mach presentò un progetto che prevedeva, fin da subito, che la scuola sarebbe stata affiancata da una stazione sperimentale, con annessa azienda agricola, e si sarebbe rivolta a tutti gli abitanti del Tirolo cisalpino, sia di lingua tedesca che di lingua italiana.

Edmund Mach presented a project which from the very beginning provided for an experimental station alongside the school, with attached farm, the institute being designed to serve inhabitants of the Tyrol on both sides of the Alps, both German-speaking and Italian-speaking.

Già nello Statuto originario fu previsto che la nuova scuola non avrebbe dovuto avere soltanto il compito di formare abili agricoltori, ma anche quello di agire di concerto con la stazione sperimentale e l’azienda, perseguendo il miglioramento delle caratteristiche e delle potenzialità dell’agricoltura.

The original statute established that the role of the school was not only to train competent farmers, but also to coordinate its activities with the experimental station and the farm, seeking to improve the characteristics and potential of agriculture.

Sotto la magistrale regia di Mach, la scuola di San Michele, pensata in un primo momento per far fronte solo alle esigenze del Sudtirolo, e la stazione sperimentale, istituita con finanziamenti modesti, si affermarono come “istituto modello” e la loro fama varcò ben presto i confini regionali, rendendo i nomi “Mach” e “San Michele” famosi ovunque esistesse viticoltura.

Un’intuizione che rimarrà a caratterizzare tutta la storia successiva e che ancora oggi si sostanzia attraverso le relazioni tra l’istituto scolastico, la ricerca e l’assistenza tecnica alle aziende.

Under the expert guidance of Mach, the school and experimental station in San Michele, initially designed to satisfy the needs of the South Tyrol alone and set up with modest funding, became known as a “model institute”. Its fame soon extended beyond the frontiers of the region, making the names “Mach” and “San Michele” renowned in the field of viticulture.

It was an approach which was to characterise the institute throughout its history and which today takes concrete form in the relations between the school, research and the technical support provided to companies and farms.

ECCELLENZA IN TRENTINO ENCE CENTRE IN TRENTINO

La Fondazione Edmund Mach dal 2008 continua gli scopi e l’attività dell’Istituto agrario di San Michele all’Adige, fondato nel 1874. È una prestigiosa istituzione che ha raggiunto negli anni importanti traguardi a livello internazionale nella formazione, nella ricerca e nel trasferimento tecnologico in campo agricolo, agroalimentare e ambientale.

Una vera e propria cittadella dell’agricoltura che si estende su un campus di circa 14 ettari con aule, serre, laboratori, uffici e 70 ettari di area verde, a 16 chilometri a nord di Trento, nel comune di San Michele all’Adige.

Since 2008 the Edmund Mach Foundation has continued to pursue the objectives and activities of the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all’Adige, founded in 1874. It is a prestigious institution which has achieved many important goals at international level over the years, in relation to education and training, research and technology transfer in the fields of agriculture, food processing and the environment.

It makes up a full-scale rural centre stretching out over a 14-hectare campus, with classrooms, greenhouses, offices and 70 hectares of land. It is located 16 km to the north of Trento in the municipality of San Michele all’Adige.

Dopo Edmund Mach si susseguono validi direttori, fra i quali spicca la figura del prof.

Enrico Avanzi, professore accademico che è riuscito a portare la stazione sperimentale agraria di San Michele alla pari degli istituti universitari italiani. Svolge anche una gran mole di lavoro nel settore cerealicolo, frutticolo e viticolo, supportato dall’enorme opera di Rebo Rigotti, ricercatore di grande talento che ha saputo spaziare in molteplici campi. Si è dedicato anche al miglioramento genetico della vite ottenendo nuovi incroci fra i quali spicca l’ormai affermata varietà autoctona a bacca rossa che porta il suo nome (Rebo).

Dopo il secondo conflitto mondiale spicca la figura di Bruno Kessler che, nella sua duplice veste di Presidente della Provincia autonoma di Trento e di Presidente dell’Istituto agrario, ha saputo rilanciare l’Ente. È soprattutto merito di Kessler se la scuola di San Michele negli anni settanta si rinnova e si prepara alle sfide dei tempi moderni, aprendosi, tra l’altro, a collaborazioni con altre realtà simili europee soprattutto nel mondo di lingua tedesca.

After Edmund Mach there were a series of valid directors. Of these, a prominent figure was Prof. Enrico Avanzi, an academic professor who succeeded in bringing the experimental agricultural station of San Michele up to the level of Italian universities.

He also carried out extensive work in the cereal, fruit and vine cultivation sector, supported by extremely significant studies carried out by Rebo Rigotti, a very talented researcher working in a wide range of fields. Rebo also turned his attention to the genetic improvement of vines, obtaining new crosses, including the by now wellestablished autochthonous black grape variety which bears his name (Rebo).

After the Second World War the figure of Bruno Kessler stands out. In his dual role as President of the Autonomous Province of Trento and President of the Agrarian Institute, he gave the Institute a new lease of life. It is above all thanks to Kessler that the school in San Michele was updated and

Innumerevoli sono le collaborazioni che si instaurano con altre realtà nazionali ed estere.

Nel settore della ricerca molteplici sono state le attività portate avanti in questi ultimi anni: dagli aspetti salutistici dei prodotti agroalimentari alla genetica per vite e melo, dalla tutela dell’ambiente al clima, dalle problematiche in frutticoltura, viticoltura, enologia agli aspetti inerenti la zootecnia, l’itticoltura, la selvicoltura ed altro ancora.

Extensive research has taken place in the last few years, in fields ranging from the healthiness of agricultural and food products to genetic research into the vine and apple, environmental protection and climate, the problems involved in fruit and vine cultivation, oenology and aspects related to animal husbandry, fish farming, forestry and other areas.

La Fondazione Edmund Mach è un’organizzazione complessa, con una struttura “neuronale”: ogni settore è dotato di una sua autonomia ed è in stretto rapporto con ognuno degli altri settori di cui la Fondazione è costituita. Questo permette un’estrema elasticità nei rapporti e nelle relazioni con l’esterno nonchè un’estrema velocità di risposta alle sollecitazioni che i mercati e le comunità di ricerca richiedono costantemente.

The Edmund Mach Foudation is a “neuronal” structure type organization: all sectors are indipendent but in close relations one with the other. This kind of organization is flexibile towards outside relationships as well as able to give quick answers to markets and resarch communities questions.

E FORMAZIONE Nei 150 anni di storia ha contribuito alla diffusione della cultura tecnica agraria e viticolo-enologica in Italia, formando professionisti affermati anche a livello internazionale. Oggi è una struttura complessa, unica a livello nazionale, che si occupa di istruzione, formazione ed aggiornamento nel settore agricolo, agroalimentare, ambientale e forestale.

In the course of its 150 year history, the centre has contributed towards disseminating the agricultural and wineproducing-oenological culture in Italy, training professionals also successful at international level. Today it is a multilevel institution unique in Italy, offering education, training and refresher courses in the agricultural, food-processing, environmental and forestry sectors.

Il Centro si caratterizza per un forte legame col territorio, col mondo operativo, tecnico e professionale, per una visione integrata tra produzione, trasformazione e sostenibilitĂ ambientale e per una cospicua rete di rapporti nazionali e internazionali.

L’offerta formativa si sviluppa a differenti livelli: istruzione e formazione scolastica, formazione specialistica post-diploma e universitaria, aggiornamento permanente degli agricoltori.

Oltre 1.000 utenti all’anno fruiscono di questa offerta.

Il Centro sviluppa percorsi attinenti alle esigenze di innovazione dell’agricoltura, di salubrità dei prodotti e di salvaguardia del territorio. Gode della sinergia e dell’interazione continua con gli altri Centri, la Cantina e l’Azienda della Fondazione. È dotato di moderne strutture e strumentazioni didattiche e di un accogliente convitto.

The training offered takes place at different levels, with school-level education and training, specialist post-diploma and university training and permanent refresher courses for farmers. More than 1,000 users/year make use of the courses provided.

The centre develops courses linked to the demand for agricultural innovation, healthy products and safeguarding of the local area.

It exploits the synergy and continuous interaction with the Foundation’s other centres, wine-cellar and farm. It has modern buildings and educational equipment and a welcoming boarding house.

Piattaforme tecnologiche innovative nei campi della biologia computazionale, metabolomica, genomica computazionale, analisi isotopiche, analisi climatiche, GIS e remote sensing consentono di perseguire risultati di alto livello riconosciuti a livello internazionale.

To pursue its mission, the Centre makes use of a modern and flexible structure based on three areas of research: Agriculture, Nutrition and the Environment, in their turn divided into activity programmes developing research projects in relevant areas. Innovative technological platforms in the fields of computational biology, metabolomics, computational genomics, isotopic analysis, climate analysis, GIS and remote sensing have made it possible to achieve important results, recognised at international level.

This is the division of the Foundation distributed most widely throughout the area, thanks to activities in the field of applied research and experimentation, services and advisory system for the agricultural, forestry and environmental sectors. Laboratori specializzati forniscono servizi analitici a imprese ed enti pubblici nei settori della chimica agraria ed enologica, della microbiologia e della diagnosi fitopatologica.

Più di 70 esperti offrono quotidianamente servizi di consulenza tecnica ad oltre 8.000 aziende agricole trentine, supportati da una rete agrometeorologica e da un sistema capillare di diffusione dell’informazione.

Applied research and experimentation activities involve studying advanced technical solutions for the environmental, social and economic sustainability of production and for the quality and healthiness of food and agricultural products.

Specialist laboratories provide analytical services to businesses and public bodies in the fields of agricultural and oenological chemistry, microbiology and plant disease diagnosis.

More than 70 experts offer a daily service providing extension service to more than 8,000 farms in Trentino, supported by an agrometeorological network and a widespread information distribution system.

AA AZIENDA

AGRICOLA L’Azienda Agricola ha funzioni di produzione e trasformazione, ma anche di supporto alla didattica e alla sperimentazione, comprende circa 120 ettari di terreni coltivati a vite e melo, una cantina e una distilleria. I suoi compiti sono istituzionali e vanno dalle attività produttive secondo criteri di sostenibilità ambientale e biologica, a supporto dell’attività didattica, di ricerca e sperimentazione degli altri centri.

La superficie coltivata è suddivisa in numerosi lotti dislocati nelle più importanti aree agricole del Trentino che vengono gestiti per realizzare un modello di agricoltura sostenibile, dal punto di vista agronomico e ambientale, con criteri di qualità, razionalità ed economicità. Le uve provenienti dai migliori vigneti aziendali vengono vinificate ed il vino prodotto è conservato nella cantina risalente al XII secolo. La produzione è di circa 250.000 bottiglie di vino, 10.000 di spumante e 5000 di grappa con l’obiettivo di produrre una gamma di prodotti che rappresentino l’intero panorama enologico della provincia di Trento.

The farm is involved in production and transformation processes but it also provides support for teaching and research activitie; and consists of a wine cellar, a distillery and about 120 hectares of land cultivated with grapevines and apple trees. The Farm tasks are manly institutional and operates according to environmental and biological sustainability standards as a support for teaching and research activities carried out by the other centres.

The cultivated land is divided into lots located in different rural areas of Trentino.

These lots are managed following a model of agricultural sustainability: the materials and the techniques which are used must have a low environmental impact, must respect specific quality and cost standards.

The farm produces wine using grapes from its best vineyards. The final product is stored in the wine cellar, which was built in the 12th century. Here you can find a sample of all oenological products of the Province of Trento. The farm produces about 250,000 bottles of wine, 10,000 bottles of sparkling wine and 5,000 bottles of brandy.

BIBLIOTECA LIBRARY La Biblioteca della Fondazione Edmund Mach è specializzata nelle discipline agro-alimentari, nella biologia applicata, nelle scienze forestali e ambientali.

Il patrimonio comprende circa 33.000 volumi, 1.500 testate di periodici e oltre 12.000 periodici elettronici, tra sottoscrizioni in abbonamento e riviste open access. In Biblioteca è conservato un Fondo storico costituito da opere e periodici pubblicati nel XIX secolo, con più di 5000 opere.

The Library of the Fondazione Edmund Mach specialises in agriculture and food science, applied biology, forestry and environmental sciences. The collection consists of 33,000 volumes, 1,500 magazines and newspapers and more than 12,000 online magazines and newspapers, including subscriptions and open access magazines. The library also has a historical archive made up of works and newspapers published in the 19th century, with more than 5,000 volumes.

GOVERNANCE E STAFF La Fondazione è governata da un Consiglio di Amministrazione in rappresentanza delle organizzazioni professionali e delle cooperative agricole trentine. Lo staff, afferente alla Presidenza e alla Direzione Generale, comprende strutture amministrative e operative trasversali all’attività dei Centri.

The Foundation is managed by a Board of Directors representing trade associations and agricultural cooperatives in Trentino. The staff, who refers to the Chairman and the General Management, includes administrative and operational personnel, working transversally in the fields of activity of the Centres.
