An Interview with Author Erin Entrada Kelly
Erin Entrada Kelly is a Newbery Award–winning author born in Louisiana and now living in Delaware. Her debut novel, Blackbird Fly, received widespread acclaim as a Kirkus Best Book of the Year, ALSC Notable Book, and the recipient of the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature Honor. Kelly’s books explore themes of identity, friendship, and resilience. In the following Q and A, she discusses her process, priorities, and her upcoming nonfiction debut, At Last She Stood.
Since the publication of your debut novel Blackbird Fly in 2015, you’ve published seven acclaimed novels for middle grade readers, as well as shorter books about Marisol Rainey and Felix Powell that you illustrated yourself. What inspired you to turn to nonfiction?
I’ve been a fan of nonfiction for a long time. I used to review nonfiction for the Library Journal. I listen to nonfiction on audio all the time. I read nonfiction when I’m working on a novel to give my brain a break from make-believe. It felt like a natural progression, and for me, that’s what it’s all about – progression. As a writer, I want to feel challenged with every book, every project, every concept. Narrative nonfiction felt like an obvious place to push myself. I work best when I’m outside of my comfort zone, no matter how much it scares me or makes me second-guess myself.

Joey Guerrero’s story is extraordinary, and it can be argued that she truly changed history. But like the stories of so many heroic women, it’s largely unknown. When and how did you first learn about Joey Guerrero, and why did her story resonate with you?
One afternoon I was roaming through Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and I saw a book on display called Carville’s Cure: Leprosy, Stigma, and the Fight for Justice by Pam Fessler, a book about the Carville Leprosarium, now known as the National Hansen’s Disease Museum. It caught my eye because I was raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana, just two hours west of Carville. I also read a lot of nonfiction about infectious diseases. It’s one of my many interests.
That night, I settled in bed and started reading. Eventually I reached a brief passage about a Filipino woman named Joey Guerrero who was a patient at Carville. I sat up in bed and immediately googled her. There were so many things about Joey that resonated with me: the fact that she lived in Louisiana, so close to my hometown; our shared ethnicity; her devotion to her faith, which reminded me of my mother; her bravery. There are so many things to admire about Joey. I couldn’t imagine working as a spy, hiding messages in my hair or my shoes, taping maps to my back, trying to trick the guards. I couldn’t imagine trudging through the jungle on foot, especially when I’m already suffering so much from illness. I couldn’t imagine walking through gunfire or closing the eyes of the dead or digging graves. And I certainly couldn’t imagine embracing all this hardship with the belief that it’s for a greater purpose.
How did you approach the research for At Last She Stood?
I started with the National Hansen’s Disease Museum. The curator, Elizabeth Schexnyder, was incredibly helpful and gracious and gave me access to all their records. I read every book and article I could find that mentioned Joey Guerrero. I researched World War II, of course, and spent hours and hours sifting through the National Archives. I reached out to librarians in the States and the Philippines. I spoke to one of Joey’s distant family members. I read every article Joey wrote for The STAR, which was the Carville Leprosarium newspaper.
Joey Guerrero’s life and work seems to have had three distinct periods, which is how you’ve organized your book: her work as a spy and member of the resistance in the Philippines during World War II, her years fighting Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy), and the years after she was cured, which she spent exploring, educating herself, and helping others. What do you hope resonates with young readers about Joey’s life?
Joey’s life has so many chapters. Some young readers will be interested in her work as a spy. Others will be intrigued by her life in forced quarantine and her rebellious spirit when she lived at Carville. Still others may find her life after Carville more interesting, as she fought for American citizenship, faced racism, and created a new identity. My greatest hope is that one or all of these elements of Joey will resonate with readers in one way or another, whether it’s her deeply rooted faith, her fearlessness, or her resilience.

Joey Guerrero is a Filipino hero and an American hero, and her exploits in the Pacific Theatre in WWII illuminate key moments in history. What are some of the themes of the book and how would you approach sharing the book with students?
World War II can be a befuddling area of study for young people, because it feels like there were separate wars happening at once – the terror of Nazi Germany, imperialism in the Pacific, and the fascist campaign in Italy – and it’s not always clear how these things are connected. But they’re all intertwined. There’s a reason World War II unfolded the way it did, and there’s a reason we study it so carefully. “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it” is a phrase that’s been attributed to numerous historical figures, but no matter who said it, I believe it to be true.
In my view, the themes of the book are faith, hope, bravery, self-sacrifice, the dangers of fascism, the evils of imperialism, and the power of ordinary people to do extraordinary things. I have a lot of respect for the underground and guerilla movement of the Philippines and the incredibly important role they played in their fight for freedom.
Ultimately, though, I want readers to take from it what they will.

Josefina “Joey” Guerrero, a native of the Philippines, was diagnosed with leprosy (Hansen’s disease) as World War II unfolded in Europe and Asia. Soon after the Japanese occupied the Philippines, Joey – believing she would die soon – joined the guerilla movement to complete covert missions in support of the Allies. Because of her condition, she was rarely searched by Japanese soldiers, which allowed her to courier secret messages, including an invaluable minefield map that she taped to her back. She was eventually awarded the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and admitted to the National Leprosarium in Carville, Louisiana, where she lived for nine years. When she was cured and released, she found it difficult to find work because of racial discrimination and her health history and was forced to pawn her Presidential Medal to make ends meet. Eventually, she shed her previous identity. When she died in 1996, her obituary identified her as a secretary from Manila. But Joey Guerrero was much more than that – she was a hero who changed the course of history.

An Interview with Author Kyle Lukoff
Kyle Lukoff is an award-winning author based in Connecticut. His middle grade novel Too Bright to See was a 2022 Newbery Honor book and a National Book Award finalist, and his Stonewall Award–winning picture book collaboration with Kaylani Juanita received a Kirkus starred review. In the following Q and A, Lukoff discusses the process of writing his first fantasy novel, A World Worth Saving.
A World Worth Saving is your third middle grade novel, but it’s your first fantasy. What appealed to you about the genre? And how was the process of writing this book different from Too Bright to See and Different Kinds of Fruit?
I have a deep love for young people’s fantasy. Two of my favorite series as a kid were the The Song of the Lioness quartet (Tamora Pierce’s Alanna books) and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials. I never thought I would write a fantasy-type book, because they always seemed so hard, but then, I never thought I would write a book in the first place because, again, they seemed so hard.
The biggest difference in writing this book was just how much I had to make up. Yes, Too Bright to See and Different Kinds of Fruit are fiction, but so much of them are based on real life, in the world we all live in. But in A World Worth Saving, so much of it had to come from my imagination, while appearing to the reader as established and concrete as a day at school. I think I pulled it off, but by the skin of my teeth.
Kyle Lukoff
Section
In the early phases of drafting this book, you worried you didn’t have enough Jewish education to write it. What did you mean by that? How has writing a book so steeped in the mythology and ethos of Judaism impacted your relationship with your faith? (Or vice versa?)
On the one hand I know that the Jewish intellectual tradition is so vast, ancient, and dense that the most knowledgeable people I know say they feel like they’re playing on the shores of the ocean. On the other hand, I still worry that stories like these should be left in the hands of far more capable people.
I was raised Reform, by nonreligious parents, with a not uncommon family story. My Eastern European great-grandparents immigrated to Chicago prior to World War II and spoke Yiddish at home. My grandparents, in turn, spoke Yiddish as a “secret language” so their kids, my parents, wouldn’t understand them. So, my parents have only a bisl (a little) Yiddish, and I, a fully assimilated American, am now exploring and romanticizing a leftist, anti-Zionist Yiddishkeit history that I, in fact, know very little of. I also grew up completely separated from a larger Jewish community, in a suburb north of Seattle, and only in my last four years or so of living in New York City did I really start to explore what it meant to reclaim a Jewish identity that felt like it was always mine yet held just beyond my grasp. When I first conceived of this book, I thought it was going to be somewhat incidentally Jewish. The main character, A, would share my sense of alienation from Jewish communities, and there would be a golem, but beyond that I didn’t think our history or folklore would impact the story much thematically. But as I got deeper into the writing of it, the story demanded to become more deeply Jewish, and it in turn required that of me.
In a recent piece for Publishers Weekly you said that your literary Pride wish was “for more books that focus on what queer communities talk about and struggle with amongst each other.” Can you share a bit about some of the intracommunity conversations that take place in this book?
I don’t want to give away too much, but this was my first time writing a trans girl character, and Sal is modeled after so many of the trans women in my life. Loving but very prickly, she is the first character whose arc I had to dramatically rewrite because A thought he needed a sidekick, and the girl that I was writing refused to tag along behind some boy. There is also the phenomenon of “the narcissism of small differences,” which is endemic in trans communities, and comes up at a few heavy moments here and there in the novel. That is something I could write a whole different book about (and just might, if people want a sequel).
Which scene was the most fun to write? Which was the hardest?
The absolute most fun to write was the dumpster-diving scene. Now there is something that required zero imagination. Another thing I could write a whole book on is how to eat well on what fancy Brooklyn grocery stores throw away. The hardest scene to write was the climax of the whole adventure. You know how, when you’re reading an action-packed fantasy, at the end of it the characters get into these big, cinematic scrapes? And you’re reading it like, “Oh my gosh how do they get out of it?? If I was in a scrape like that I would just roll over and die.” So, I got A into the biggest scrape of all and realized too late that I had no idea how to get him out of it. I did figure it out, eventually, but the solution came from something I had planted way, way back at the beginning of the book, with no conscious intention for what it would grow into.

A World Worth Saving
Kyle Lukoff • Dial Books • 2025 • MS
COVID lockdown is over, but A’s world feels smaller than ever. Coming out as trans didn’t exactly go well, and most days, he barely leaves his bedroom, let alone the house. But the low point of A’s life isn’t online school, missing his bar mitzvah, or the fact that his parents monitor his phone like hawks – it’s the weekly Save Our Sons and Daughters (SOSAD) meetings his parents all but drag him to.
At SOSAD, A and his friends Sal and Yarrow sit by while their parents deadname them and wring their hands over a nonexistent “transgender craze.” After all, sitting in suffocating silence has to be better than getting sent away for “advanced treatment,” never to be heard from again.
When Yarrow vanishes after a particularly confrontational meeting, A discovers that SOSAD doesn’t just feel soul sucking…it’s run by an actual demon who feeds off the pain and misery of kids like him. And it’s not just SOSAD – the entire world is beset by demons dining on what seems like an endless buffet of pain and bigotry.
But how is one trans kid who hasn’t even chosen a name supposed to save his friend, let alone the world? And is a world that seems hell-bent on rejecting him even worth saving at all?

An Interview with Author Barb Rosenstock
Barb Rosenstock was born and raised in Chicago and is an award-winning author of fiction and nonfiction. Her books combine deep research and playful language and have won multiple awards, including a Caldecott Honor, Golden Kite, and CLA Beatty Award. In the following interview, she talks about her new book, a thrilling and mysterious true story that’s sure to spark teens’ interest in American history, media literacy, and women’s rights.
How did you first learn about the Fox sisters, the subject of American Spirits? Why is their story important for young readers to know about today?
About six or seven years ago, I was researching a picture book in upstate New York. Looking for someplace to go between scheduled interviews, I ran across a travel pamphlet at my hotel that mentioned the house in Hydesville, New York, where the Fox sisters grew up. After getting lost for two hours, I eventually found the original site of the Fox family home, seemingly in the middle of nowhere.
I couldn’t believe that three sisters whom I’d never heard of started in this tiny rural cabin and became world famous by essentially inventing the American séance. The story of these young sisters conjuring spirits took me back to middle and high school ghost stories, late night tarot readings, and Ouija board sessions. I started researching like crazy, collecting every book, article, photo, and old newspaper clipping I could hunt down that mentioned Maggie, Kate, and Leah Fox.
I was struck by how the lives of the sisters paralleled today’s internet celebrities like the Kardashians (except imagine Kim, Khloé, and Kourtney as spirit mediums before the

Civil War). I spend a lot of time at schools as a visiting author, and I’ve noticed that middle grade/high school kids frequently say that they want to grow up to be “famous,” as if famous was a job (and maybe it is!). I figured that young people’s desire for fame resulted from the visual/social media culture of our times, but the more I learned about the Fox sisters, the more I realized that celebrity has a long history in America, and perhaps functions as an essential part of the American spirit.
I felt like I was gifted a true story about the ways in which young people crave notoriety, the pressure of adult expectations, what it costs to become famous, and how celebrities often lose their real selves as they become manufactured products. The Fox sisters’ times mirror our own including intense political divisions, media sensationalism, new technologies, science vs. belief, truth, lies, a pandemic, and an addiction crisis. Everything about this story was modern even though it happened more than 150 years ago. Plus, there was romance, adventure, and a lot of ghosts – talking, levitating, and even moving furniture! It had to be written.
You’ve spoken about an encounter you had with a psychic medium several years ago and how she was able to “channel” someone very close to you. Did this experience inspire you while writing American Spirits?
Yes. Even though I consider myself a skeptic, I had an experience with a psychic who said she channeled my grandfather’s spirit. And to this day, I’m unreasonably convinced that she did. I thought of that experience every day while writing and revising American Spirits. My grandfather has been gone about thirty years, but his memory (or his spirit?) is in my life every day. He was a phenomenal storyteller, a person with a sixth-grade education who never stopped reading – even when he quit school to work. He innately understood
the elements of a good story. The man could enrapture people while recounting a trip to the corner store. He knew that every story needs touches of comedy and tragedy. So, even though this book required spending a fair amount of time on death, corpses, illnesses, and other tragic topics, my grandfather also inspired a subtle sense of humor that I hope young adults will appreciate.
You’re well known for your picture books for kids. American Spirits is your first book for older readers. How was your writing process different for this book vs. your picture books?
I was flat-out scared to write for older kids – middle grade and young adult readers. Just the thought of writing chapters, providing historical context, and working with a large cast of characters seemed way above my skill level. Yet, I was obsessed with the unbelievable true story of these celebrity sisters and the history of American séances. A writer friend dared me to write a proposal (yes, dared). I took the dare (yes, like at a middle school sleepover), and the book’s journey began.
In a way I was kind of right, I didn’t know what I was doing, but then again, neither did the Fox Sisters. Something about writing scared every single day fit the story of three sisters who came from nowhere and must have been terrified of the twists and turns in their lives as the world made them famous. Process-wise, I had to get used to having the freedom to expand an idea instead of always having to hone it for the tight word counts of the picture book format. I had to work the history into the story instead of interrupting the narrative to talk facts. Picture book authors can spend hours figuring out the three perfect words to use in a single sentence. I had to learn to draft with attention to an overall narrative arc and save revising the perfect language for later. It was exhausting and exhilarating, and I’m so glad I dared to write for this older audience.

What do you hope young adult readers learn after reading American Spirits?
I’d love for readers of American Spirits to come away intrigued. I have great respect for this age of audience. Young adults know how to look at evidence and make their own decisions. I didn’t want to insult their intelligence by telling them what to believe. The book is nonfiction, it intentionally sticks to facts but doesn’t absolutely decide whether belief in spirits is true or false. My thought process is covered in the book’s detailed author’s note about belief and science. There’s ample evidence for some mediums cheating, and there’s also evidence for continued mystery around séances, death, and the afterlife. American Spirits is purposefully open-ended. I want readers to make up their own minds.
I also hope the modern themes in American Spirits help young adults realize that history is made by people like them. History happens every day at schools, around the kitchen table, on city streets, and in rural cabins. History teaches us the constants of being human across the ages and the fact that feelings don’t really change. Young or old, people “back then” were no different from people today, with similar struggles, worries, hopes, and dreams. Well-written nonfiction, like good fiction, can help us feel less alone.
Most importantly for our times, I hope this book creates a truly entertaining space for believers and skeptics to have deep discussions about truths, lies, and how we tell the difference.

American Spirits: The Famous Fox Sisters and the Mysterious Fad That Haunted a Nation
Barb
Rosenstock • Calkins Creek • 2025 • YA
Could the Fox sisters actually speak to the dead – or were they frauds?
Rap. Rap. Rap. The eerie sound was first heard in March of 1848 at the home of the Fox family in Hydesville, New York. The family’s two daughters, Kate and Maggie, soon discovered that they could communicate with the spirit that was making these uncanny noises; he told them he had been a traveling peddler who had been murdered. This strange incident, and the ones that followed, generated a media frenzy beyond anything the Fox sisters could have imagined. Kate and Maggie, managed (or perhaps manipulated) by their elder sister Leah, became famous spirit mediums, giving public exhibitions, and advising other celebrities of their day. But were the Fox sisters legitimate?
This thrilling and mysterious true story from veteran author Barb Rosenstock (Caldecott Honor winner) will spark teens’ interest in American history, encourage media literacy, and reveal insights into the Civil War era, fake news, and women’s rights.
