A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING PARTNERS
Welcome to the summer 2023 edition of Retrospect, Foley Hoag’s alumni newsletter. We hope you enjoy our new interactive design and format.
Several significant firm milestones have occurred since the last edition, most notably the opening of a Denver, Colorado office. Expansion to Denver gives Foley Hoag a physical base outside the U.S. Northeast Corridor and an increased capability to serve clients in the western part of the country, and strengthens several of our key areas of strategic focus.
Shortly after arriving in Denver, Foley Hoag celebrated its 80th anniversary. What started as a fourperson partnership in downtown Boston on April 1, 1943 has grown to a global law firm with four U.S. offices and one in Paris. Today, Foley Hoag boasts a headcount of nearly 700 individuals firm wide.

The growth and success of Foley Hoag are the results of our excellent attorneys and business services professionals - past and present - and their commitment to our clients. The knowledge, experience, and efforts of everyone at the firm have enabled Foley Hoag to adapt to myriad changes in the law and technology, and successfully meet all the challenges of the last 80 years. To our former colleaguesour alumni - we thank you for the roles you played in the firm’s successes.
It was very nice to see several alums at our Women’s Forum Spring Fête reception, at the Foley Hoag Foundation’s 40th anniversary celebration, and also taking part in firmsponsored events as guest speakers (see stories inside). In addition, we reconnected with former associate Von Bryant - now a Foley & Lardner partner in D.C. - for the latest installment of “Catching Up.”
Our alumni are an integral part of the firm’s fabric, and we enjoy hearing from you all. Please stay in touch, and have safe and restful remainder of the summer.
Jeff Collins and Jim Bucking, Managing PartnersAlumnae Gather at Women’s Forum Event

Foley Hoag’s Women’s Forum group hosted our alumnae at a Spring Fête cocktail reception on May 4, 2023. The gathering was the first in-person alumni event since the onset of the pandemic, and enabled us to celebrate the firm’s 80th anniversary; the 10th anniversary of the Women’s Forum; and showcase our newly renovated office space. Women’s Forum co-chairs Stacie Aarestad and Kathleen Brill provided opening remarks, while Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Officer Rosa Nuñez was also on hand to give an update on the firm’s latest DE&I initiatives.
Alumnae Amy Boyd-Rabin, Jill Bradford, Kelly Caiazzo, Mara Calame, Stephany Collamore, Jana Dailey, Daniele Levy, Jennifer Lichtman, Sharon Lincoln, Jenevieve Maerker, Nell Richmond, Sandra Shapiro and Toni Wolfman joined our women attorneys and professionals at the reception.

IN THE BEGINNING
I summered in Foley Hoag’s Boston office in 2010. Throughout that experience, I felt a strong sense of mentorship and could tell that I would be well supported after starting full-time. I was right! The opportunity to practice in venture capital and to work with super smart unpretentious people was also very lucrative to me.
Eventually I worked in Boston as an associate from January 2012 to December 2014. My primary practice areas were venture capital and M&A transactions. I worked mostly with Dave Broadwin, Patrick Connolly, Meredith Haviland, Mark Haddad and Alex Aber.
LOOKING BACK
While at Foley Hoag, I received incredible mentorship from those I worked with most, particularly Dave and Patrick. To this very day I recall things they taught me either specifically or how to generally resolve corporate issues and to manage client relationships effectively.
The largest deal I worked on was for Alere with Mark Haddad, while I was a third year associate. I remember really cutting my teeth on the transaction and that was also my first experience managing other junior attorneys on a high profile matter. Whenever things feel challenging now, I still think back to that Alere deal - almost 10 years

ago! - and that always puts things into perspective... because the deal was intense (at least for me) and incredibly rewarding once closed.
I made so many lifelong friends at Foley Hoag, and remain closest with Caroline Donovan and Gabrielle Bernstein, but feel an enduring connection to all the attorneys from my summer class. It feels great when folks ask “What was your prior firm?” and I respond “Foley Hoag!” I always get a positive reaction and additional credibility as a solid lawyer - and I am thankful for that.
HERE AND NOW
In December 2014 I relocated to the Washington, D.C. area and joined Foley & Lardner as an associate, which elevated to a senior counsel role. I am now in my second year as a partner in the transactions practice group (having been promoted in February 2022), continuing to focus on venture capital and M&A. I work with colleagues across the country, and most of the associates I work with are in D.C., Boston and Silicon Valley offices.
One feather in my cap as a start-up lawyer is that my client, The Pizza Cupcake, won an investment on “Shark Tank” from Lori Greiner a few years ago. Since I am a fan of the show, I still get excited when receiving e-mails from Lori (now that I am finished negotiating with her team).

A project I am most proud of in my time at Foley & Lardner has been working with and now running the Georgetown Law Center Entrepreneurship clinic for the office. This is a pro-bono effort where I get to work with law student and local start-up companies that either are nonprofits or have a positive social impact. It is a great opportunity to be involved in the local start-up eco system and to mentor young attorneys, and a ton of fun! One of this year’s projects is focused on addressing food deserts [a geographic area where residents have few to no convenient options for securing affordable and healthy foods] in the underserved community in the Southwest D.C. – the project aims to open a fresh food grocery store in the next year. Projects like this offer the chance to give back and leverage my skills and platform in a truly meaningful way.
To any young attorneys with their eye on the partnership track, I say: You can do it – no need for imposter syndrome because the “real you” earned your opportunity at the firm.
CHANGES IN THE M&A/ECVC LANDSCAPE
With the economy tightening, it feels similar to when I began practicing in 2012 (after being deferred a few months out of law school) when ECVC work slowed down, and I believe we are headed into a similar situation now as an industry. I hope any slowdown is short lived and am encouraged by the uptick in telemedicine, healthcare and AI based tech transactions that I have been working on most recently.

HOMESTEAD MUSINGS
Since my time at Foley Hoag I have gotten married and bought a house in the District. My wife, Jaslyn, and I have two kids: Zari (4) and Freddie (18 months). Random tidbit: I have picked up the hobby of hiking, most often in the portion of Rock Creek Park connected to my neighborhood.

CLOSING SHOUT OUT
I want to give a special shout-out to my former office neighbor, Jennifer Audeh. Jen always took extra time to mentor me off-theclock, provide practical advice and friendship. Although we did not formally work together, she mentored me in meaningful ways during my time at Foley Hoag.
