Tom and Stacey Theis, (“Tice”), know the difficulties of the farming business. In 1998 after suffering through several years of drought and the subsequent loss of production to support their family, they decided it was time for a change, moving from plowing dirt to pushing dirt while continuing to farm. Their first move: Trading 15 yearling heifers for a 1983 Fiat Allis dozer. Throughout the fall of 1998, Tom spent countless hours working on the Fiat, eventually restoring it to running condition. Tom taught himself dozer operation by removing trees. Using a borrowed lowboy trailer and the ‘83 Mack Truck used on the farm, Tom hauled the Fiat Allis to numerous job sites in Harper and surrounding counties. This area of Kansas is active in oil exploration and development. Tom met and established relationships with many of the
operators and, in the process learned how to lay out well sites and earthen pits and how to winch equipment in and out of drilling sites. In the fall of 2004, Tom and Stacey decided to stop farming and commit their time and energy full time to the dirt work. One year later, they built a facility in Spivey, KS, to house their office, shop facility and equipment yard. The Cat® Commitment. The Theises learned the importance of a dependable service shop and ready parts availability. “Operational and parts costs on equipment add up fast when a dependable parts store and service shop is not readily available,” said Tom. In 2005, Theis Dozer began purchasing Cat Dozers and Wheel Loaders from Foley. “We began purchasing Cat® equipment because of parts availability and the reputation that Caterpillar has in producing solid, reliable equipment.” Today, Theis Dozer Service has 21 full time employees and offers a variety of dirt construction, oilfield well site preparation, aggregate hauling and soil conservation services. In addition to working with the local independent oilfield operators, Theis also works with larger drilling operators deploying horizontal well drilling technologies. “We recently expanded our fleet to efficiently handle the larger pad sites required by the horizontal drilling operators,” Tom said. Theis’ Cat fleet consists of 6 Dozers, (2 - D6Ts, 1 - D6R and
