Online Participation in 2020 BLIA World Conference Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) 2020 World Conference was held Online on 4th October 2020. FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Venerable Juexi, Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland, Venerable Rulian, Presidents of BLIA NZ North and South Island Chapter, Presidents of BLIA Subchapters, BLIA Directors, BLIA members, and members of the Young Adult Division (YAD), participated in this Online World Conference, together with 11 thousand BLIA members from 101 BLIA branches scattered throughout 50 Countries.

The Founding President of BLIA, Venerable Master Hsing Yun wished BLIA members around the world a peaceful and bright future. The Honorary President of World BLIA

Wu Po-Hsiung, Vice President Liu Chang-Le, Deputy President Venerable Tzu Rong and Hawa Daillo, Public Information Officer and Head of Unit of UN NGO Relations encouraged all BLIA members to serve the public and promote calmness, peace, and harmony to make the World a better and more beautiful place.

People in different time zones gathered and the conference was translated into nine languages including Mandarin, English, German, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean and Cantonese. Additionally, English subtitles were simultaneously set up and three versions of the theme song Beyond the Distance were played during the conference.

Remote Presentation and Proposal Discussion There are 10 main Buddha’s Light International Association from five continents around the world gathered through the Internet. Fruitful results from the associations were shared adhering to the four main objectives of Fo Guang Shan which are promote good values through culture, foster talents with education, benefit the society through charity and purifying heart through mutual cultivation.

President of BLIA NZ North Island Chapter Mr Lintao Yu presented on behalf of Oceania. He mentioned the Embracing Love and Peace Concert held in Auckland and Christchurch, and the other various activities organised by the Australia and New Zealand Temples. Humanistic Buddhism in Oceania is committed to localisation and the inheritance of beliefs. Fruitful results have been achieved and looking forward to an exciting chapter in the future.

Forum of Maintaining Equanimity The World Conference also held discussion topics on How to settle the mind under the impact of the pandemic and How to cultivate an optimistic life and inherit the faith. Venerable Abbot Hsin Bao, Venerable Hui Chuan, Venerable Yi Kong and Venerable Jue Pei were invited to share The Buddhist Ways of Maintaining Equanimity.

The interviews were shared with millions of BLIA members all over the world. Abbot Hsin Bao shared that During this difficult time, peace is auspicious, peace is a blessing, and peace is joy. According to Venerable Yi Kong, we should observe the cause and effect and reverse the adversity. Venerable Hui Chuan shared that although the coronavirus is ruthless, love is spread all over the world.

Looking Forward to Meeting in HQ Abbot Hsin Bao summarized the significant proposal including the BLIA T-EARTH project which responded to the United Nation’s activity of environmental protection and ecological balance. Abbot Hsin Bao encouraged youths to participate in 2021 Fo Guang Youth Conference, promoted Three Good Microfilm International Creation Competition, and held a series of celebrations for the 30th anniversary of BLIA. Abbot Hsin Bao appreciates BLIA members around the world for their compassion and wisdom. Although everyone are in different regions and time zones, we all work together for Buddhism and bring hope to the world.

BLIA North Island Chapter AGM March with Hope and Positivity The Buddha’s Light International Association North Island Chapter launched the Annual General Meeting on 4th October 2020. The conference was attended by around 100 people consisting of Fo Guang Shan New Zealand Venerable Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian, BLIA Oceania Fellowship Committee Director Ms Dolly Tsai, BLIA North Island President Lintao Yu, Chief Senior Advisor Ms Han, Deputy President Ms Sally Wong, Venerables, BLIA members and youths.

President Lintao Yu expressed his gratitude to the Temple for making sufficient preparation to ensure the meeting launched successfully, especially the numerous testing sessions by the Technical Team. He also said even though the current pandemic brought challenges, BLIA members can take this as an

opportunity to reflect and study.

President Yu encouraged BLIA members to continue serving the community and work towards a harmonious society.

Director Dolly Tsai was thankful to the wisdom of Humanistic Buddhism and Venerable Master Hsing Yun for motivating the BLIA members to move forward. She shared that it is a pleasure to be a BLIA member at this generation. The information technology breaks the boundaries of time and space, allowing BLIA members to take the online courses, practice, reflect and have a meaningful life during the lockdown.

Under the guidance from Abbess and Venerables, BLIA NZ members won various global awards. In the future, Director Dolly wishes to witness the prosperous history of the Fo Guang Shan Temple in New Zealand with all the BLIA members.

BLIA South Island Celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival Embrace Warm and Love The Buddha’s Light International Association South Island Chapter Annual General Meeting was held on 4th October 2020. This conference was attended by approximately 60 people, including the Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Venerable Juexi, President of BLIA South Island Mr Bernie Siew, Vice President Mr James Low, Senior Advisor John Lai, subchapter presidents, directors and BLIA members. President Bernie led the BLIA members to review the numerous of wonderful activities carried out in the past year.

Venerable Juexi pointed out that the Temple is always here to provide service to the community, even after experiencing the earthquake, mosque shootings incidents and the Covid-19 pandemic. She thanked BLIA members for working together

2020 to overcome the adversity over the years. Venerable Juexi also complimented the success of the Chocolatte Festival, which attracted approximately 1,500 people to attend.

Besides that, numerous Buddhism Seminars helped people to gain inner peace through Dharma, guiding the BLIA members and local citizens to be positive and understanding life.

Venerable Juexi encouraged the BLIA members to keep a close connection with the Temple.

The Temple prepared more than 20 dishes to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. BLIA members appreciated the care from the Temple, giving them a sense of belonging even they were away from their hometown.

The First Online Joint AGM of BLIA South and North Island BLIA North and South Islands New Zealand held their first joint Annual General Meeting online on 4th October.

There were around 160 attendees, including Venerable Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Venerable Jue Xi, Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian, BLIA Oceania Fellowship Committee Director Ms Dolly Tsai, BLIA North Island President Mr Lintao Yu, BLIA South Island President Mr Bernie Siew, Subchapters Presidents, Directors and Members.

In the meeting, the trailer of the documentary film of Venerable Master Hsing Yun Buddhism Depends on Me – Humanistic Buddhism and the annually report video of Auckland and Christchurch were shared with all attendees.

The Joint Meeting discussed and passed the following motions raised jointly by BLIA North and South Islands:

1. To form a Committee for the collection and compilation of historical facts and information on the development of Humanistic Buddhism in New Zealand. This is to facilitate the future compilation of the History of propagation of Humanistic Buddhism in Oceania by FGS HQ. It will also serve to provide proper historical materials on the development of Buddhism in Oceania.

2. Both BLIA North and South Islands will continue to promote Vege Plan A so as to influence more people to go vegetarian, unite the power of kindness and beauty, and boost the sustainable of the world.

Abbess expressed that BLIA members are lucky to come under the guidance of Venerable Master Hsing Yun because we are able to learn the Dharma while serving the public and gaining Dharma wisdom simultaneously, thus paving the way to become more wholesome persons.

FGS Attended the Family Memorial Service for the 10th Anniversary of the Canterbury Earthquake On the 22nd February 2021, Fo Guang Shan Christchurch was invited by the NZ World Peace Bell Association to attend the Family Memorial Service for the 10th Anniversary of the 22nd February 2011 Canterbury Earthquake at Avonhead Cemetery to represent the Buddhist community. This was a special memorial service for the families of the deceased which took place in a quiet and peaceful setting for people to remember the victims, with various religious representatives offering

their prayers. FGS NZ Venerable Abbess Manshin, FGS Christchurch Minister in Charge Venerable Juexi and members from the Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) South Island, making up 10 people attended the ceremony. Also present were the Christchurch Mayor Hon Lianne Dalziel, representatives of various religions, the Japanese ambassador, and more than 100 people who are families of the victims.

and representatives of various religions gave speeches and paid tribute through various religious rituals. This included Catholic representative Father Brian Fenessy, Buddhist representative Venerable Abbess Manshin from FGS NZ, Jewish representative Yosef BenHaim and Christchurch Transitional Cathedral representative Dean of Christchurch The Very Reverend Lawrence Kimberley. Abbess recited Venerable Master Hsing Yun's Prayer for the 10th Anniversary of the Canterbury Earthquake, wishing for the deceased to rest in peace and for the survivors to stay strong and work with the government to rebuild a brand new future for Christchurch.

Afterwards, Christchurch Mayor Hon Lianne Dalziel, the Japanese ambassador, families of the earthquake victims and the public laid flowers at the monument.

Abbess led the BLIA members to recite the Heart Sutra and the Pure Land Rebirth Mantra in front of the monument, offering blessings and merits to the deceased which completed the blessing ceremony for the day.

FGS Received Christchurch City Council's Civic Awards To honour their outstanding contributions made by the organisations and citizens of Christchurch to the City, at a special ceremony at the Christchurch Town Hall on 1st December 2020, the Christchurch City Council presented the 2020 Christchurch Civic Awards to these organisations and individuals. This year the awards were presented to 18 Christchurch associations and individuals, including Fo Guang Shan, which carried out outstanding service contributions to the community. On behalf of the Temple, FGS Christchurch Minister in Charge Venerable Juexi was at the ceremony to receive the Award, which was witnessed by 120 Christchurch residents who attended the ceremony.

In the award presentation, Christchurch City Mayor Lianne Dalziel praised FGS Christchurch Temple as a place for spiritual purification and a venue for cultural exchanges. Over the years, the Christchurch Temple has provided services and made contributions to

the local community, among many of these include their cooperation with the Red Cross on the Meals on Wheels Project for more than 20 years, and their cooperation with the New Zealand Police in the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing to establish correct educational values for the students. In addition, FGS Christchurch had set up a Disaster Relief Centre after the earthquake to provide victims with timely supplies of materials, and services. In her speech, Mayor said: “I would like to thank the citizens who have unyieldingly guarded and supported the City. Many civil organisations have spontaneously made efforts to harness individuals’ strengths into a force for the revitalisation of the City.

In recognition of their contributions, Christchurch City Council would like to award the annual Civic Awards to these outstanding groups and individuals. The Award recipients chosen today represent the best from Christchurch and Christchurch is proud of them!”

In addition to the award recipients, people from different sectors attended the ceremony including Christchurch City Councillors Anne Galloway, Christchurch Art Gallery Director Blair Jackson, and representatives from the public services and education sector.

They thanked Fo Guang Shan for its continuous assistance to the New Zealand Police Department, as well as the efforts made to build a harmonious and beautiful community.

NZ Police Officers & BLIA YAD NZ Perform Lion Dance on CNY Eve Lion dance has long been an auspicious practice that occurs during festivals, grand rituals and ceremonies. It symbolises magnificence and well-being. Four police representatives from New Zealand Police who were invited by Abbess Manshin from Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple NZ, joined Lion Dance performance on Chinese New Year Eve. FGS Auckland YAD member Sean started YAD lion dance group in 2010. After 10 years of hard work and dedication, he is now in charge of teaching in Fo Guang Lion Dance group. During rehearsal, Sean started with the basic cooperation between the front and back dancers in the lion costume. The dance movements were broken down to horse stance, lion head lifting, lowering body, bending down and many more. The dance steps were then brought together

with matching beats of traditional instruments: gongs, cymbals and drums. The dancers will have to pay close attention to the details, for example, the blinking of lions’ eyes and movements of lions stance were practiced over and over again.

Police officers were completely new to lion dance at the start, however, after several hours of dedicated rehearsals, they were able to depict the dignified energy from lions through their dance.

On Chinese New Year’s Eve, YAD and police officers brought out four lions. The lions marched towards the Main Shrine in high spirits, paid tribute to the Triple Gem and the public. The lions’ bright and lively characters were expressed in their nimble, witty and festive movements as they circled the stage, jumped high and low, performed treasure offering and received red envelopes

from Abbess. Performers were greeted with warm applause when audience realised that four lion dancers were the community police officers.

Abbess Manshin said that the police officers are the protectors of the public as they carry out their duties and maintain order. They bring safety to the community and peace to the country. On this special day, New Zealand police officers from different cultural backgrounds joined YADs and worked creatively, brought joy and blessings to temple visitors. More importantly, this is part of a history for promoting multiculturalism in New Zealand. In Buddhism, a lion’s roar symbolises the fearlessness and majestic nature of the Buddha when spreading Dharma. The lion dance is a portrait of the diligent cultivation in heart, which also brings blessings to all four seasons.

FGS Auckland Join The Kindness Pandemic Movement Instill Kindness and Warmth in the Community In mid-March, a good cause known as The Kindness Pandemic has been initiated by Dr Catherine Barrett from Australia, which encouraged the public to treat frontliners of Covid-19 with kindness. Citizens from various countries have been actively supporting this act of kindness to bring warmth to their local communities and to draw people closer to each other.

On 3rd April, under the leadership of Abbess Manshin, the team at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland made a banner filled with words of encouragement by spray paint. The banner was then displayed on the temple fence to catch the attention of passing traffic and pedestrians. A lot of them gave a

thumbs-up as a sign of supporting the warmth and kindness delivered by the temple. In addition, Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) members from different sectors also supported the good cause and expressed their gratitude by writing down kind words on post-it notes. The notes filled with encouragements and auspicious blessings to all frontliners were then posted in supermarkets, hospitals and companies.

Abbess expressed that although the virus is ruthless, we still have love in this world. During this critical period, everyone needs to unite together and support the essential workers who are working for our benefit as frontliners. BLIA members practice the Three Acts of Goodness to instil warmth and kindness to the human world. We wish to eliminate the outbreak in the near future and to continue living in a harmonious society.

Auckland War Memorial Museum Received FGS 3G4G Banner

To commemorate the difficult time during COVID19, in May 2020 the Auckland War Memorial Museum initiated the collection of 100 pieces of mementos across New Zealand.

FGS Auckland Temple donated its banners which were hung on the fences during COVID19 with the words, Do Good Deeds, Say Good Words & Think Good Thoughts.

Representatives from the Temple, Senior Advisor from Subchapter 3 Michelle Pan and members from BLIA Young Adult Division NZ, were honoured to hand over the banners to Nina Finigan, the curator of the museum.

These five banners were created

by Abbess Manshin together with the Temple staff who painted and hung the banners on the fences to deliver positivity to commuters and pedestrians. The Three Acts of Goodness, Do Good Deeds, Say Good Words together with auspicious blessings with the aim

of encouraging medical staff on the front line and people from all sectors of society who provide services to the public.

Museum staff Lucy learned that the Three Acts of Goodness & Four Givings originated from FGS Venerable Master Hsing Yun which promotes social harmony and peace where by doing good deeds one's heart can be purified. For six consecutive years, FGS Auckland has been organising the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing event.

This event has been successful in gathering students and people from different parts of the society to learn the meaning of 3G4G. Lucy appreciated the gift from FGS Auckland and mentioned that the words on the banners are thought provoking and she hopes that more people will be able to see these messages and understand the meaning of those words.

Artist Sharing and Live Demo Spreading the Beauty of Art The 4th Art Salon attracted 92 local artists with over 480 pieces of artworks on display. During this period, Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland specially invited the participating artists to hold approximately 30 artist educational sessions, where the participating artists held live art demos and sharing sessions. This allowed the public to experience and feel the artists’ process of creation and understanding the inspiration behind the art pieces.

Artist Anita Madhav’s floral and bird pieces embrace New Zealand native elements, such as the Tui which is unique to the region. Anita noted that

the peaceful atmosphere of the temple was perfect for her work, and she hopes to return to the Temple to paint again sometime in the future.

David Quinlan, an architect and oil painter from the United Kingdom, shares that he chose to work in the construction industry as he did not want to become a painting teacher. He only returned to painting 10 years ago when he decided to retire early. Many of his inspiration comes from nature, where his work is like a story which reflects what he saw and heard.

Artist Sherrill Bentley, naturally incorporates elements of local New Zealand into her creations with the inspiration from the Maori culture.

This was her first time exhibiting her work and she was very grateful to the Temple as the Temple provided a platform for her to display her work.

This gave her a new experience which is filled with joy and accomplishment.

Coffee artist Larry Abreño, who has painting with coffee for 10 years, was inspired to paint with blueberries and raspberries during the lockdown due to the epidemic. He said that painting is the best way to relax and express emotions.

Artist Amanda Brett, painted a street view of Christchurch’s Riccarton House at live art demo. She has been working with watercolor for 25 years.

Amanda shared that she enjoyed painting when the watercolors are still wet, giving her work an unexpected and surprising effect. She nonetheless enjoys the process and would hope that her work can give people warmth.

Olga Kovaleva, as a polymer clay live demonstration was a big hit with families, who were excited to work with the clay creating various shapes. Olga shared that this is a great family activity as by mixing different colors of clay and kneading them together, it creates beautiful and colorful creations. This is a great way for children to develop awareness of colour.

Sculptor Judy Rogers shares that she is inspired by the Steampunk culture and likes to collect all kinds of materials such as old clocks, watches and even washing machine parts. She also states that she hasn’t grown up and has kept a raw originality deep inside.

Batik artist Monisha Gallage was amazed at the number of people of all ages and cultural backgrounds who gathered at the Temple. She felt welcomed with the friendliness from everyone. The process of creating batik requires utmost patience and care which is a great form of meditation. This was her first attempt giving a live demonstration. She was inspired by the enthusiasm of the people and hopes to promote this culture to more people.

Keith Gavin, a glass artist shared that he was inspired by nature to create glass artworks of the local New Zealand landscape. Visitors Lisa and Zin loved the Pohutukawa piece. They commented on the vibrant layers and colors of the sea and the beach, especially the Pohutukawa tree which is very well made showing local characteristics.

Elsie Lau, member of the BLIA North Island Subchapter 4 and an artist, says that her art inspiration comes from her surrounding environment, people, and her perceptions to new things. Last year, she painted flowers which were inspired from gardening. This year, she created artworks inspired by the Super Mario series to encourage people to face the challenges of life.

During the Art workshop she prepared Super Mario stickers for the children to show their creativity and imagination when creating their artwork. Her art workshop was very well received by the children.

Wawa Yen, a designer of Auckland Temple, conducted an Art workshop for the youths. She introduced to them the tools and techniques of handpainted illustration, explaining the key points and practical application of hand-painted works. Wawa also prepared some materials for the youths to try out and showed them how to create their own pieces giving them a sense of achievement.

Vicky Han, a staff of the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland and Ikebana artist, shared that she learnt flower arrangements from the curator of FGY NZ, Abbess Manshin. Vicky thanked the Abbess for her patience and guidance over the years. She believed that flowers arranged with a calm mind and good thoughts would be a positive offering to the public.

Volunteer Sharing Session Realizing the Value of Self Through Service On the afternoon of 28th November, Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland held a volunteer sharing session with the Curator of FGY NZ Abbess Manshin, President of BLIA NZ North Island Chapter Mr Lintao Yu, Honorary Professor of Mechanical Engineering of Taiwan National Chung Cheng University Professor Shiau Ting-Nung, the Gallery staff and volunteers, along with 35 other people who attended.

everyone to put into practice the concepts learnt from the temple, to bring the arts to life and to live their lives to the fullest. Winnie, a staff at the Art Gallery, shared that there were about 130 volunteers for the Art Salon this year. They have different personalities and specialties, hence, staffing arrangements is required to ensure a smooth operation of the exhibition.

Mr Lintao Yu stated that the Temple itself is an artwork created with the heart and minds where the value is realized as the time passes. Under the leadership of Abbess, the Temple and the art gallery operate with aesthetic connotations, from activities planning, service, layout of the exhibition, and the transmission of positive energy.

As mentioned by Abbess, The future of the world is a world of service. Hence, FGY Auckland and Christchurch should follow in the footsteps of FGS Headquarters and The Buddha Museum to realize the universal values in service. Abbess also stated that a person is only of value when they can be used by the public. She is grateful to the volunteers who helped with the six exhibition halls, allowing the public to enjoy the artistic atmosphere of the entire temple.

Artist Get Together Celebration Inspiration for Future Work Over 120 invited guests, which includes participating artists, their families and friends attended the Artist Get Together Celebration on 21st November which was started with a Maori ritual blessed by Dr Powhiri Rika-Heke.

This year’s Art Salon Exhibition includes: Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s One-Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition, Wen-Jung HSU World Tour Exhibition, exhibition of various artworks from local artists, and a special Prince Siddhartha exhibition.

The World Management Seminar was chaired by FGY Art Gallery Headquarters Curator Venerable Ruchang to discuss the core values of FGY Art Gallery, post pandemic strategies to be adopted for sharing the kindness messages of Humanistic Buddhism via Arts, and other management issues. Venerable Ruchang mentioned that, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Abbess Manshin led members of the Young Adult Division (YAD) in carrying out many meaningful activities, turning the temple into an Art Gallery and making the Water Drop Café and the FGY

Art Gallery an outstanding example of promoting kind and virtue messages via Arts and Culture. FGY Art Gallery New Zealand has indeed become a role model for Overseas FGY Galleries.

During the Seminar, Venerable Juexi discussed the strategies to be adopted to deliver the kindness messages of Humanistic Buddhism through Arts; while Abbess Manshin shared her experience in executing the various FGY’s artistic activities with the participants. BLIA Online Youth Conference Beyond Distance Heart to Heart On 1st August, 2020, the Buddha's Light International Association Headquarters held the 2020 International Buddhist Youth Conference online with the theme of Faith and Legacy - Marching Forward with Faith, Beyond Distance, Heart to Heart. Nearly 800 young people from 23 countries gathered on the cloud to participate in this event. 30 young people from the Auckland and Christchurch attended the conference, including the president of Christchurch YAD Apple Ma, and the president of Auckland YAD 2, Thomas Lai. During the conference, representatives from different regions reported how they contributed to the community during the epidemic.

New Zealand youths reported that during the epidemic they have gained

wisdom through online reading sessions, as well as taking good care of the Temple by doing chores and gardening.

Venerable Hui Chuan then led the youth to read Venerable Master Hsing Yun's A Prayer to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva for Safety from the Novel Coronavirus Outbreak, to pray for the safety and well being of all from the COVID-19 pandemic. Venerable Hui Chuan

explained that it was rare to conduct a Buddhist youth conference around the world during this difficult time. The conference was a result of Venerable Master's spiritual philosophy of collective effort, institutional leadership, doing only what is in accordance with Buddhism and relying on the Dharma. Venerable Hui Chuan encouraged young Buddhists around the world to unite their strength and propagate Venerable Master Hsing Yun's philosophy.

To commemorate Commonwealth Day 2020, a Special Service was held at the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral on 8th March 2020. The Dean of Christchurch Cathedral the Very Reverend Lawrence Kimberley, invited Fo Guang Shan New Zealand Venerable Abbess Manshin to attend and offer a prayer at the Special Service. The Commonwealth Day is celebrated yearly by 54 Commonwealth nations and falls on the second Monday of March each year.

On April 3rd, Acting Deputy Commissioner Andrew Coster was appointed as New Zealand’s new Police Commissioner. He took over the post from former Police Commissioner Mike Bush for a term of 5 years. Andrew Coster graduated from the Police Academy in 1997; he has been serving the Police Department for nearly 25 years. In 2013, he was promoted to be the District Commander in Southern New Zealand. In 2015, he was the Assistant Commissioner who was in charge of strategy and transformation. He has received brilliant results through his service in every department.

Commissioner Andrew Coster stated that the police department has set out three goals for the national security for the next five years. The first goal is to strengthen the role and the business model of various organisations. The second goal is to provide both the necessary services and support to the public. The third goal is to jointly prevent the occurrence of crime to ensure the safety of the public through cooperation with various

organisations. He thanked his family for their unconditional support and companionship, followed by thanking his colleagues in the police sector who are united to protect the lives and property of New Zealanders, and to maintain social stability. He also thanked social organisations and all parties for working closely with the Police Department to serve the public. During the epidemic, social events occurred from time to time.

Now and in the future, challenges and opportunities coexist. Police Commissioner Andrew Coster expressed he is looking forward to work with the public to build a harmonious society in New Zealand.

The outbreak of Covid-19 lead to the spread of various social problems. In order to understand the challenges faced by a number of ethnic groups during the epidemic, the police commissioner frequently had video conference meetings with ethnic group leaders. These video conferences discussed on ways to stabilize the society and conveyed what support the New Zealand Police can provide for all parties. Leaders and elders of all ethnic groups have expressed their joy and with the help from the New Zealand Police a harmonious community is created.

The Pacific and Ethnic Focus Forum was held on July 30th 2020 in the afternoon at the Royal Society Te new Police Commissioner Andrew Coster hosted the forum. The forum participants included Deputy Commissioner Wallace Haumaha,

leaders must be responsible, tolerant, contribute to the team and create an environment in which everyone can thrive. Thirdly, the New Zealand Police must create a collective creative culture for everyone to cooperate and build a harmonious society together.

Lastly, by cooperating with various community organizations, we will maximize the strength of the New Zealand Police and strive to improve the quality of life in the community.

Police Wing 337 pay respect and condolences to the deceased

Prayer for Police Officer who Venerable Master’s Prayer to Reassure the Public On 19th June 2020, Constable Matthew Dennis Hunt from New Zealand Police, was shot and killed in the line of duty in West Auckland which drew the attention from the community. Under the guidance of Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple NZ, Venerable Manshin, a memorial plaque was specially set up at the Pagoda for public to pay respect and condolences to the deceased.

One week after the incident on 26th June, Police Commissioner Andrew Coster led a minute’s silence at 10:37am where colleagues of the late Constable Matthew Dennis Hunt and members of public to pay their respects. Patron of Wing 261 Abbess Manshin led 50 people to have a memorial and blessing ceremony in the Auckland Temple. to serve the community with strength and confidence. Several police officers were very touched when they saw the name of their late colleague written on a Buddhist plaque.

Senior Constable Christopher (Ross) Clarke, a senior police officer who has served in the Police Department for 49 years, received warm applause from the public when he took the stage to receive an award. He works as a general police dog handler and detector dog trainer. He is committed to keeping the community safe and

guiding junior police officers with his extensive experience and skills.

Clarke has also demonstrated exceptional canine training and handling skills by competing in the New Zealand Police Dog Championships. Police explosive detection dog Kia who was trained by Clarke won the National Police Dog Championships. His outstanding dedication and loyalty to the Police Department has inspired many young officers to follow in his footsteps.

The Counties Manukau East (Ormiston) Strategic Workshop for Leaders was held in Fo Guang Shan Auckland on 14th July 2020. Nearly 30 people including Superintendent Shanan Grey, Inspector Wendy Spiller, Chief of the Eastern District of Manukau Police Department Inspector Colin Higson, Inspector Phil Weaver and Senior Sergeant Anson Lin attended the meeting.

The Abbess of Fo Guang Shan New Zealand, Venerable Manshin hopes that all police officers can brainstorm and devise better strategies to build a harmonious and beautiful society.

The police play the role of community babysitter devoting their time and energy to protect the community.

Hence, the public should also take good care of the police. The Abbess led the police officers to offer light to the Buddha in the Main Shrine and gave a prayer for the meeting. The

police officers also wrote on wishing cards in the Prince Siddhartha Exhibition and picked the wise words of Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Through a video shown in the meeting, New Zealand Police Commissioner Andrew Coster encouraged the leaders to be responsible, so that team members will be able to grow and be better.

Leaders must know how to be tolerant, so that team members will not be hesitant to ask for guidance. Leaders must be able to communicate with their team members on how to use their strengths, contribute to the team, and help their team members be the best version of themselves.

Inspector Wendy Spiller thanked the team for their dedicated service.

She has seen everyone unite and cooperate, overcome challenges, and perform their duties as the police from various social incidents. On behalf of

the Police Department, she thanked Abbess and BLIA members for their warm service, where they not only provide a beautiful and peaceful venue for the public to learn ordinary heart is the way, but also prepare delicious vegetarian food. She expressed there were many surprises whenever coming to the Temple.

The Abbess said that in addition to calming people's hearts, the Temple also strives to serve the public. She hopes that everyone who comes to the Temple can transform themselves for the better and add credit to the community. Wing 337 Experience the Peace On June 23rd 2020, 15 new police officers recruit from the Wing 337 visited the Fo Guang Shan Auckland Temple. They were led by Inspector Chris Barry, Senior Sergeant Anson Lin, Asian Community Relations Officer Justin Zeng, Constable Kevin Deng, Constable John Book and many other officers from the Manukau District.

The police officers were warmly welcomed by Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of Fo Guang Shan Auckland Venerable Rulian, Director of BLIA Oceania Fellowship Committee Ms Dolly Tsai, BLIA North Island Chapter Chief Senior Advisor Ms Han along with 10 BLIA members.

The Event Manager, Nick gave the police officers a guided tour, and led them to the Pagoda to have a prayer for Constable Matthew Dennis Hunt, a police officer who has fallen in the line of duty.

Inspector Chris Barry expressed distress towards the deceased. The duty of police officers is to ensure the safety of the public on the front line.

He hoped that through daily training, police officers will be prepared to face the challenges of various complex situations. Further on, he wished all the best to police officers in the workplace.

The police officers thanked all members of the Temple for arranging such an enriching cultural education program for the day. They also expressed their happiness and gratitude towards the effort that the Temple has put in over the years to promote and contribute for the community at large.

Senior Sergeant Anson Lin encouraged the officers to face the challenges with courage. He expressed that the outstanding seniors in the Police Force will help everyone to grow and improve as they work together to serve the community.

The Temple showed a video of activities at the Auckland Temple for the Wing 337 police officers to watch.

Abbess once again thanked the NZ Police for their support over the years.

Abbess explained that the idea of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings was spread through various enriching activities, which helped to sow the seeds of wisdom in New Zealand .

Barry Shepherd, Emma Teutenberg, Roberta Eykholt and Jon Stevenson from Police Service Design and Innovation Lab made their first trip to Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland on 16th October, accompanied by NZ Police Inspector Rakesh Naidoo.

Abbess Manshin introduced the educational and art culture activities that have been committed to promote at both Fo Guang Shan Auckland and Christchurch. The Art Salons held every November which is coming to its fourth year, providing a platform for local artists. The 3G4G Festival has been hosted for six consecutive years, appreciation was expressed to the NZ Police and schools participated for the common achievement. These have sew the seeds of goodness in the hearts of the students. When the society was in trouble, the Temple offered help straight away, such as the Christchurch earthquake, where hot meals were provided to those effected and assistance was given to the police to help comfort the distressed to get through the hardship. When the 315 Christchurch mosque shootings happened, the local residence were panicked, the Temple especially held Embracing Love and Peace Concert and Chocolatte to spread hope and warmth, letting people perceive

there is still love and peace in the society. During Covid-19, Fo Guang Shan donated masks to community groups and nearby schools. When the lockdown was over, more than 600 people paid a visit on the first day FGS Auckland opened, the general public was wishful to return to the home of spiritual to precipitate body and mind, regain strength from the root of the heart. The Auckland and Christchurch Temple welcome and service hundreds of visitors every day, committed to spread positive and kind value, contributing to a harmonious society.

While visiting Prince Siddhartha Exhibition, the guests each took Venerable Master Hsing Yun's wisdom words and read it carefully, they expressed that the wisdom words fit very well with their inner thoughts, gaining affirmation and inspiration for their current service role.

As it was officer Barry's birthday on that day, Abbess specially gifted him Venerable Master Hsing Yun's book and prayer beads with blessings. Barry stated that today's visit was full of surprises, the thoughtful arrangements made him having a warm and moving birthday, the peacefulness and comfort from the Temple, immediately settled in the heart and regained strength.

Peace On 30th October 2020, Inspector Rakesh Naidoo and his colleagues, Mike Klick, Brodile, Roberta Eykholt and Jon Stevenson, paid a visit to Fo Guang Shan Christchurch. They were welcomed by FGS New Zealand Venerable Abbess Manshin and FGS Christchurch Minister in Charge Venerable Juexi.

The visitors were first guided by Abbess Manshin to the Buddha Hall, where they performed flower offerings and conducted prayers to wish for good health and strength to take care of the safety of the community.

FGS have been working closely with the Police in forging a happy and harmonious New Zealand. Afterwards, the visitors were guided to the Art Gallery to visit Professor Kuo YenChiao's Traditional Chinese Paintings Exhibition, the Practitioner's Mind Floral Exhibition and the Everlasting Beauty of Dunhuang Art Exhibition.

Inspector Rakesh and his colleagues were full of praises for the services rendered to the community by FGS Christchurch. They hoped that the Temple will continue to organise more activities that are beneficial to the community so that it can head towards more harmonious developments.

On the afternoon of 2nd July 2020, Gandhi Nivas House held an event for the release of the results from their five-year research.

Representatives of Gandhi Nivas House invited the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple New Zealand Abbess Manshin, Deputy Commissioner Wallace Haumaha, Deputy Police Commissioner John Tims, Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers, NZ Police Inspector Rakesh Naidoo, founder of Indian Newslink Venkat Raman, and 50 others.

The team led by Professor Mandy Morgan and Dr Leigh Coombes of Massey University conducted a 5 year survey and research from 2015 to 2019. The research report pointed out that Gandhi Nivas House provides psychological counselling for domestic violence abusers where

approximately 60% of men were helped without offending again.

The founder, Ms Ranjna Patel, said that we must not only take care of the victims of domestic violence but also counsel the abusers to find the root of the problem in order to prevent domestic violence in a targeted approach.

The organiser specially invited Abbess Manshin and her team to chant the Medicine Buddha Mantra to pray during the opening, to wish that everyone can do good deeds to benefit the society, say good words to care for each other and think good thoughts to purify oneself. Abbess also delivered the message of Five Harmonies by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, which encourages everyone to build a safe community in New Zealand.

major social problem in New Zealand.

Many young people invariably follow the violent behaviour due to their environmental influences. She praised the leadership of Ranjna and Deputy Commissioner John Tims for leading the team in achieving the excellent results.

Deputy Commissioner John Tims expressed that the team’s efforts are evident to all. He appreciates his fellow colleagues for their help in tidying up the environment, gardening and providing psychological counselling to the abusers. In the future, NZ Police will also focus on the impact of domestic violence on youth development.

During the Lunar New Year Celebration, 24th to 26th January 2021, there were more than 10,000 people who visited FGS Buddhist Temple New Zealand. Under the guidance of Abbess Manshin, the Temple and BLIA members who upholds the spirit of Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings by serving the public wholeheartedly in order to share joy and blessings with the visitors. The Venerable led the public to farewell the previous year. The New Year started off with Dharma Function, Buddha worship and various celebratory activities, including offering the first incense, receiving auspicious new year red packets, new year countdown, OneStroke Calligraphy stamping, striking the Wishing Bell and Vegetarian Food Stalls. Four police representatives from New Zealand Police Otara joined the Lion Dance performance with YAD members on Chinese New Year Eve, which brought joy and peace to temple visitors. Inspector Rakesh Naidoo delivered the auspicious new year wishes the Commissioner and his Police colleagues. He highlighted that New Zealand is one of the most peaceful and diverse countries in the world and that social harmony is the collective achievement of everyone’s effort. We are also fortunate to have organizations like FGS that are working in partnership with the New Zealand Police as well as other governing agencies to build harmonious relations.

Senior Sergeant Police Anson Lin shared, this is the first time in history that police officers from Otara participated in the New Year’s Eve Lion Dance performance. Anson said that it is always a great honour to be invited by Abbess to participate in the activities at the Temple. He hopes the Lion Dance can pass the message of joy and peace to everyone.

From 11th to 13th February 2021, Fo Guang Shan Christchurch held a series of activities to celebrate Chinese New Year, attracting 1,300 people from Christchurch.

New Zealand Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon was also present to offer his blessings.

During the 3 days celebration, multiple activities including flower and candle offerings, striking of the Bell of Happiness, praying at the Buddha Hall, Sutra transcription and picking of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Wise Words, as well as special Chinese New Year programs, like lion dance and Qing Dynasty Princess dances performance were arranged by the Temple.

President of BLIA NZ North Island Chapter Mr Lintao Yu stated that the Temple and BLIA members have always been committed to serving the public by organizing various activities to calm people's hearts and create happiness. This year, BLIA North Island will be working together with everyone to cultivate their hearts and

also contribute good deeds to the temple. He also wished everyone joy, peace, good fortune and health in all seasons.

On 30th January 2021, Fo Guang Shan Christchurch held its 2021 Chinese New Year Reunion Lunch Buffet. 150 people consisting of members of Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) South Island, FGS devotees and Christchurch residents, attended the lunch buffet.

FGS New Zealand Venerable Abbess Manshin, Professor of Aerospace Engineering Shiau Ting-Nung, artist Paul Deans, BLIA South Island President Bernie Siew and BLIA North Island President Lintao Yu were invited as Guests of Honour.

Abbess Manshin led a prayer by chanting the Medicine Buddha Mantra and reciting Venerable Master Hsing Yun's A Prayer for the Society. This was then followed by Abbess Manshin distributing auspicious red packets, Venerable Master Hsing Yun's One Stroke Calligraphy couplets Cultivate a Heart that Blooms in All Seasons and new year souvenir to the attendees.

The Chinese New Year Reunion Lunch was held in a buffet style, with more than 20 traditional vegetarian Chinese New Year dishes, various Oriental and Western desserts, drinks and fresh fruits for the attendees to enjoy. Bringing Warmth to a Cold Winter On 25th July 2020, Fo Guang Shan Christchurch held its 2020 Blessing Chocolatte – Coffee and Chocolate Festival. This was the biggest nongovernmental festival in New Zealand after the 2 months lockdown. This festival attracted 1,500 local visitors to participate. In addition, Mr Dale Stephens of National Party, Diversity and Inclusion Advisor at Office of Ethnic Communities Ms Candy Zhang, Christchurch City Councillor Mr Jimmy Chen, Canterbury Police District Commander Superintendent John Price, NZP National Engagement Manager Inspector Rakesh Naidoo and former Police Detective Superintendent Virginia Le Bas.

Venerable Abbess Manshin pointed out that FGS New Zealand’s objective for organising such a big festival was to share Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s concept of Four Givings. At the same time, through this festival, FGS hoped to offer their service, contribution and creativity with the hopes of spreading positive energy into the community.

The programme of the festival was rich and varied as it included singing performances from a famous Christchurch Choir, dance performances, live demonstrations by copper wire artist Leonore Ashby and scratchboard artist Esther Gane, Talk by local chocolate brand Spiritual Human Evolution, art exhibition, Sutra transcription and Food Fair. The visitors were pleasantly surprised to

Vegetarian Market Promoting

On 14th & 21st November, the Cherry Blossom Festival Vege Market has attracted about 4,000 people to participate.

Various local stalls such as Aoraki coffee, natural and pure lavender products, New Zealand natural honey products, hand-made crepes, delicious cupcakes and other special products participated in the market. The vendors shared that the peaceful atmosphere in FGS made them feel the vitality and joy of Humanistic Buddhism.

The vegetarian food stalls prepared by the BLIA North Island Members and Young Adult Division were very popular.

The visitors were very impressed with the variety of food choices. The Temple also gave out 1,200 bowls of Laba Congee to the visitors to celebrate Buddha’s Enlightenment Day. BLIA members who were in charge of the Vege Plan A shared that the objective of the project to the public which attracted many people pledging to have more vegetarian food in their daily lives in order to protect the environment.

Buddha’s Light International Association’s South Island organised the 2020 FGS Green Flea Market Vegefest on 7th November 2020. The festival was led by New Zealand FGS Venerable Abbess Manshin, FGS Christchurch Minister in Charge Venerable Juexi and BLIA South Island President Bernie Siew.

Approximately 60 volunteers and members of BLIA North and South Islands participated in the festival which attracted a big crowd of

1,200 local visitors. There were 26 stalls with different characteristics and nationalities which presented diversity in the event.In addition, the free medical consultation area received good feedbacks from the public. The Green Flea Market was chosen as the theme of this year’s Vegefest, encompassing the ideals of Cherishing materials for the greater good, environmental protection and recycling which played an important part in this green event.

Lunch Buffet To celebrate the upcoming holiday and New Year in New Zealand, on 19th December 2020, Fo Guang Shan Waterdrop Cafe Christchurch held an European Style lunch buffet event. The buffet attracted more than 260 customers and BLIA members to attend. This event took about a month to prepare and promote, which involved the effort of nearly 50 staff, volunteers and youths from FGS Auckland and Christchurch.

As the joyous holiday season was approaching in a week's time, numerous regular customers came together with their family and friends to enjoy this lunch buffet.

various activities that consist of local culture characteristics. Hence, more people can taste the delicious vegetarian food and understand the benefits of being a vegetarian.

The event also resonates with the Vege A Plan promoted by Buddha’s Light International Association Headquarters. The project encourages people to uphold vegetarian dietary habits, reduce livestock slaughter and environmental preservation which is sustainable and will benefit the earth’s future. This event was a perfect ending for the year of 2020.

Embracing Life with the Community

New Zealand was in lockdown for three months due to the spread of the Covid-19 around the world.

Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland reopened on 2nd June after the COVID-19 Alert Level moved to level 1. An average of 200 visitors visited FGS Temple Auckland every day to prostrate to the Buddha in the shrines, acquire wise words and dine at the Waterdrop Café. From

facing the challenges of Covid-19, the loss of a police officer and other social events, people were filled with sadness. During this critical time, it is crucial for the Temple to provide positive energy, embrace life together and to start anew. The Blessing Open Day was held on the 27th and 28th June and allowed people carry out light offerings, Dharma service, spiritual workshop, meditation, temple tour,

cultural markets, art exhibition and many more. This enabled them to feel blessed.

A little girl who came to The Prince Siddhartha Exhibition had written down a wishing card before when she joined the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing. This time she visited the Temple with her family and made a wish- I hope every sick person will recover soon and hope the COVID-19 Pandemic can be eliminated as soon as possible and I wish everyone can stay healthy. In Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s One-Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition the public are encouraged to complete the calligraphy and take it back home to share with their families.

At the Pagoda, a special memorial was held for Constable Matthew Dennis Hunt, a police officer who was killed in the line of duty in West Auckland on June 19th. Two ladies who went to the same church as the police officer said that they were very grateful for the warmth the temple had provided for their fellow church member.

More than 2,000 people attended the two-day event and thanked the BLIA NZ members for their sincere and thoughtful service, which brought warmth and strength to the community during the cold and gloomy winter days.

Workshop Inner Dialogues to Uncover Our Hidden Treasures Spiritual Workshops on Be Ourselves was held during the Blessing Open Day on 27th and 28th June. It was co-hosted by psychiatrist Dr Suresh Kumar & Anju Kumar and occupational therapist Kathryn Molloy.

More than 150 people attended the workshop.

The three lecturers shared their clinical and personal experiences and expressed their understanding of self. An individual's mood and way of thinking are influenced in their childhood by a sense of dependence on their parents and various other things. These habitual thinking patterns are regarded as reality over time. In fact, the way of thinking can be changed by recognizing emotions and being aware of one’s own emotions. It is important to learn how

to care for yourself as you grow up.

Being ourselves requires us to be full of passion for life and have constant acceptance.

Therapist Kathryn Molloy was asked by the audience during the Q&A session why she chose to work as an occupational therapist and counsellor for female offenders. Kathryn said she had trained with people with mental illness in her field and found yoga and meditation to be very helpful. She hopes more people will benefit from it.

Another audience asked: Everyone has to play a lot of roles, father, children, colleagues and so on.

Sometimes we may have differences in communication with others. How can we get along with others honestly?

Dr Suresh Kumar said that you need to accept your vulnerability honestly and courageously, not to get angry from the fear of criticism from others, and to express your ideas sincerely even if the other party does not agree with you. Communication is also a kind of a peaceful and rational way.

Abbess Manshin said that the three lecturers are altruistic Bodhisattvas who give spiritual guidance to the public. There are 52 levels of Mahayana Bodhisattva, and we are all trying to raise our spiritual level.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, when social media is full of negative information, we should return to our hearts and be grateful for the abundant resources, the selfless dedication of front-line personnel and the positive cooperation of the public.

Abbess expressed that three lecturers are very rich in heart. She appreciated their selfless sharing to the public with their positive energy to illuminate heats of the public.

Damon, an audience thanked the Temple for organizing this wonderful lecture. The lecturers provided very helpful methods on how to release stress and affirm self-worth.

The audience also expressed their gratitude to the lecturers for presenting the truest side of themselves to the public through the anatomy of their life journey, and guiding the public to be themselves in the face of adversity. He was deeply touched and was able to gain strength from the lecturers’ talks.

Senior Sergeant Anson explained that there are several types of fraud, such as investment fraud, emotional fraud, Internet fraud and economic fraud for the elderly. Criminals usually use the weakness of human nature, where they target individuals greedy for money, people caring for the elderly care or a recluse. For those targeted, the criminals will find a way

to obtain the target's trust, in order to achieve their plans of defrauding people. If one's identity card or bank card is lost, one must report the loss to the relevant departments in time to prevent criminals from using the identity information to engage in illegal fraud activities. The public were also reminded to be vigilant with the increasing number of new types of fraud.Senior Sergeant Anson told the public to be calm and think of righteous thoughts when encountering fraud situations. He also advised the public do not seek shortcuts to

make money and provide personal information to strangers. The public can ask the police for help to minimise the risk of criminal fraud when they are not sure of the authenticity of the other party.

Volunteers Appreciation Dinner Volunteers Appreciation Party was held at Auckland Temple on 22nd December 2020. There were around 120 people, including Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple NZ Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of Auckland Temple Venerable Rulian, fellow Venerables, President of BLIA North Island Chapter Mr Lintao Yu,

subchapters committees, Young Adult Divisions and volunteers from various departments who are committed to serve the Temple. Abbess led the participants in reciting the Medicine Buddha's mantra and read the Prayer for Volunteers written by Venerable Master Hsing Yun.

Abbess Manshin felt grateful for the long-term service of the volunteers, who helped serve the community in the community in New Zealand.

From the perspective of culture and education, the Temple has served the local community and received positive feedback through projects such as 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing and Art Salon that was held for many years. The Abbess encouraged everyone to never stop improving themselves by following the pace of the Temple in order to be a Dharma protector.

Building Consensus and Working Together After the Covid-19 lockdown, New Zealand government moved the country to Alert Level 2 which allowed gatherings up to 100 people. On 6th June 2020, BLIA South Island held a Thanksgiving Tea Party to thank the Temple for conducting various courses and workshops for the crowd during the lockdown period. The attendees include Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple NZ Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of Christchurch Temple Venerable Juexi, President of BLIA South Island Chapter Mr Bernie Siew, BLIA South Island Directors and more than 40 BLIA members.

The Abbess led the crowd to chant sutra and read the Prayer COVID-19. During the lockdown period, devotees were diligent as they not only practice Buddhism at home but they still served the community which embodies the spirit and values of Buddhism. The participation of BLIA members is very important for

the history of Fo Guang Shan. To be a BLIA member, we should embody the values of Buddhism, be committed, focused, diligent, as well as be positive, so that the public will have confidence in Fo Guang Shan and BLIA members.

President of BLIA South Island Chapter, Mr Bernie Siew thanked Venerable for leading the members to worship and paint Guanyin Bodhisattva during the lockdown period. He also thanked the Venerable for organising virtual events such as Buddha bathing and scripture copying during Qingming Festival so that people from all over the world can participate. Regardless of the types of activities, the Venerables and BLIA members work collectively to achieve a good outcome.

BLIA members in South Island shared their feelings of participating in the regular activities held by the Temple during the lockdown period and

thanked Temple for enriching their life during lockdown. They benefited and felt the power of teamwork from the courses and participation in preparing vegetarian meals.

Minister in Charge of Christchurch Temple, Venerable Juexi said that she was glad to witness the growth of the people who participated in the virtual classes. She also felt grateful to the president and BLIA members for keeping in touch during the lockdown and for also offering food to the Temple. BLIA members are always encouraged to return to the Temple frequently, stay close to Venerables and participate in the various activities as the Temple is their home. By working together and supporting each other, goals can be realised.

Celebrating the Reunion On 27th September, BLIA North Island hosted the Mid-Autumn Festival Fellowship Get Together in which the Young Adult Division coordinated a Fashion Show where NZP Senior Sergeant Anson Lin was specially invited. FGS Buddhist Temple NZ Abbess Manshin, FGS Auckland Temple Minister in Charge Venerable Rulian, BLIA Oceania Fellowship Committee Director Ms Dolly Tsai, BLIA North Island President Mr Lintao Yu and more than 100 BLIA NZ committees, members and YAD were in attendance.

The short play performed by the YAD titled The Story of Four Wives was adapted and inspired by the article Four Wives from Venerable Master Hsing Yun's The Many Matters of Life.

Venerable Master compares one’s body, wealth, relatives and mind to the four wives. This analogy is drawn to remind the public to cultivate merits to have a better quality of life.

Abbess Manshin was then invited to present awards to the 16 Humanistic Buddhism Speakers. Abbess then encouraged everyone to continue spreading goodness and harmony to the society.

President Lintao said that the YAD adequately demonstrated innovative ideas under the guidance of the Abbess where proper etiquette and conduct were being practised through the fashion show performances. President Lintao also thanked the Temple for organizing various activities during

the pandemic, so that everyone can strengthen their hearts and minds.

Ms Dolly Tsai stated that this is the first time BLIA members gathered together after the second outbreak. Ms Dolly Tsai also thanked Abbess’ team for leading the devotees to move forward with the power of Dharma.

Senior Sergeant Anson Lin cherished the opportunity to communicate with everyone after the second lockdown.

He praised everyone's collective creativity for the night’s performances.

Abbess Manshin pointed out that the impermanence that was brought by the pandemic teaches everyone to live in the moment. She also encouraged everyone to keep on practicing the good value in their daily life.

While visiting Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s One Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition and viewing the video of Venerable Master writing, guests commented that the wisdom of Venerable Master is extremely admirable. Through visiting the One Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition, knowing that Venerable Master cannot see clearly, the guests expressed they were impressed with Venerable Master's perseverance and the unique

style of the calligraphy. The group carefully read Venerable Master's wisdom words at Prince Siddhartha Exhibition. John Taylor stated that the exhibition is very unique and full with strong cultural and educational atmosphere. It is indeed an important asset of the local community.

Reverend Warner Wilder said visiting Temple is like coming home, and made him felt great.

Sir Barry Curtis, told everyone cordially about his causes and conditions with the construction of the Temple. Face Masks Donation Support the Society During the lockdown period, FGS NZ fully cooperated with the government and participated in The Kindness Pandemic to show gratitude to the essential workers in New Zealand.

Senior Sergeant Anson Lin from Ormiston Police Station came to the Temple on 16th of April to receive 800 medical masks from Abbess Manshin.

As the guardians of the community, NZ police plays an important role in educating and guiding the public during this critical moment. During the visit, Senior Sergeant Anson Lin shared the current situation of the police force in handling the epidemic challenges and expresses his appreciation to the Temple. He mentioned that the police force currently has sufficient protective gears and will redistribute the masks to the departments that are in need.

Senior Sergeant Anson Lin redistributed the mask to organisations in need, namely South Seas Healthcare, Otara Health Charitable Trust and Summerset retirement community. From 29th October to 23rd November, Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) South Island New Zealand Director committee Kokwei Low led members of the BLIA members and Young Adult Division (YAD) to visit several schools in Christchurch which includes: Hornby High School, Wharenui School, Te Komanawa Rowley School, Opawa and St Thomas of Canterbury College to donate the hand sanitiser.

They also promote the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing education program, Laba Congee Festival and other activities organised by the Temple.

The schools appreciate BLIA for their kind deeds and the hand sanitiser.

They hope that the hand sanitiser can serve as a reminder to students to strengthen health protection measures during this pandemic.

Although Covid-19 has been brought under control in New Zealand, resources for epidemic control are still scarce. Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland has received 83 boxes of hand sanitisers donated by devotee couple Grace and Max. Abbess Manshin has immediately allocated some of these sanitisers for visitors to use. Sanitisers were also given out to seven schools which accepted and appreciated these sanitisers as they needed them.

On behalf of the Temple, Venerable Miaoyu and BLIA North Island members and YAD sent out 72 boxes of sanitisers to local schools since February 2021. Sanitisers have been given to 7 schools including St Mary MacKillop Catholic School, Baverstock Oaks School, Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School, Panmure

District School, Mission Heights Junior College, Tangaroa College, and Papatoetoe Intermediate School. The principal, teachers and staff members of these schools were delighted to accept the support from the Temple.

Buddhist Temple NZ is concerned about the community and donated 200 face masks to Baverstock Oaks School and Mission Heights Junior College to support the school reopening.

On 15th May, Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland, Venerable Rulian handed over the 200 facemasks to Associate Principal Andrew Flanagan of Baverstock Oaks School on behalf of the Temple. Andrew appreciates the continuous support and concern from the temple. He also struck the peace gong wishing for a safe and smooth transition for the teachers and students returning to schools.

Artist Heather Atkins and her partner, received Laba Congee at the Temple and shared that it was also her husband’s birthday hence, Laba Congee will be one of the dishes served during the celebration.

Representatives from the BLIA North Island Third Subchapter, President YuLing Gu and member Sunny Shi, delivered 50 bowls of Laba Congee to the Kidney Dialysis Department in Middlemore Hospital. The medical personnel were thrilled to receive the warm Laba Congee as they look forward to receiving Laba Congee every year. They thanked Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple for sending the Laba Congee to the hospital every year.

Auckland Temple gave out Laba Congee from the 3rd to the 6th of December 2020 to commemorate Buddha’s Enlightenment Day. A new record has been set this year due to the hard work of over 80 volunteers where 20,000 bowls

of Laba Congee were given out to the local community, hospitals, schools, old folks’ home, companies, businesses, and various associations.

The Laba Congee recipients expressed their gratitude to Temple and volunteers for their contributions,

President YuLing Gu and Deputy President Susan Wang delivered 350 bowls of Laba Congee to North Shore.

They were stationed in front of a subchapter member, Patrick's restaurant to facilitate the Laba Congee collection. Local businesses that have received the Laba Congee for the past

Member of BLIA North Island Fourth Subchapter, Donna, who moved to Hamilton last year, travelled for one and a half hours to the Temple to collect 450 bowls of Laba Congee.

The congee were to be shared with

the local businesses and general public in Hamilton. She expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the temple for their generosity.

BLIA NZ Member, Reann Chang, was in charge of the preparatory works of cooking Laba Congee. The preparation includes washing and frying rice, cutting vegetables and packing the ingredients. She felt the strength of collaborative effort where

a pot of Laba Congee signified the accumulation of thousands causes and conditions. This is because it is important to ensure each process work smoothly while preparing the Laba Congee. Reann also stated that she witnessed the growth of BLIA Young Adult Division as they were able to take on more responsibility.

She was very proud to be part of the team.

The Minister in Charge of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland, Venerable Rulian, conveyed the words of care and encouragement from Abbess, who praised the volunteers for their passion and collaborative effort in serving the community. This is because volunteers started their day early in the morning cooking and packing 20,000 bowls of Laba Congee.

Venerable Rulian encouraged everyone to grab hold of any opportunity in volunteering, and to serve the public in order to cultivate right causes and conditions. Abbess Manshin commended the volunteers as they served the community and worked with efficiency and quality.

Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Christchurch gave away 2,500 bowls of Laba Congee on the 11th and 12th of December 2020 with the leadership of Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch, Venerable Juexi. 2,500 bowls of Laba Congee were distributed to the local community to commemorate the enlightenment of Buddha.

Residents of Christchurch expressed their gratitude to the Temple for giving them the opportunity to taste the delicious and meaningful Laba Congee.

The public were looking forward to receiving the Laba Congee since dawn.

The Three Goodness Children's Colouring Competition kicked off in the morning of the 14th November 2020. 14 children participated and completed their colouring within the timeframe given. Abbess Manshin and the President of the BLIA North Island Mr Lintao Yu presented the certificates and prizes to the winners and participants.

Blessing Ceremony for Harmonious Family Approximately 180 families from different countries and regions participated in The Baby & Children Blessing Ceremony and, the Three Acts of Goodness Family Blessing Ceremony. Abbess led the ceremony and prayed that the babies grow up safe and healthy under the blessings of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. She also wished that the families live in happiness and encouraged everyone to practice Three Acts of Goodness to have a happy family and develop a harmonious society.

President Mr Lintao Yu shared that he was grateful to his wife Melody Cai who faced the challenges in life with him throughout the years, the faith of Humanistic Buddhism has been deeply rooted in each other’s lives. He vowed to pass on this faith to the next generations.

Prince Siddhartha Exhibition Inspired by Venerable Master’s Wise Words The Prince Siddhartha Exhibition was held by Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland in April 2019 and it was popular with the local people in New Zealand. The Exhibition contains various activities, including a video The Life of Buddha, Light offering, Trees of Three Acts of Goodness

and Four Givings, picking Venerable Master’s Wise Words, and writing wish cards. The Exhibition offers an opportunity for every visitor to understand Buddha’s story, and the idea of Humanistic Buddhism’s Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings.

Most visitors obtained spiritual

inspiration from this Exhibition.

During the New Year of 2021, visitors from various places in New Zealand, came to the exhibition with their families. They wrote down their wishes on the cards praying for everything to go well or to achieve goals they have set for themselves this year. These wishing cards include the blessings and wishes from all around New Zealand are posted on the wall from the inside of the exhibition to the outside. Lisa, an educator from Whangarei, mentioned that the wall of wishes reflects the aspirations of people of different ages, and cultural backgrounds, so that we can understand their thoughts. Lisa also said that this wish wall is the epitome of time and society, showing an educational significance.

More than 90,000 pieces of Venerable Master’s Wise Words have been taken from visitors. Ms Hsu, a visitor said that she will always get a wise word scroll during the first day of New Year. These wise words can guide her in the New Year as Master Hsing Yun’s wise words are the best blessings for her in the New Year.

The Conversation between Heart and Art Wen-Jung HSU World Tour Exhibition The After a Thousand Miles –WenJung HSU World Tour Exhibition was held at Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland from 9th August to 29th November. During the four-month exhibition period, 27,000 visitors visited the exhibition. The exhibition received a great number of positive feedbacks from the visitors as it led them to a deep contemplation and inspiration.

The Deputy Police Commissioner of NZP John Tims, looked through every detail of the work like a silent conversation between his spirit and the painting. He mentioned that he really like the Ox painting as it made him felt a sense of duty. Rachel, who grew up in a New Zealand farm, was really excited when she saw the cattle in Spring Comes and Spring Goes painting where the cattle look into the distance as if waiting for her return reminded her of her happy childhood.

Rachel appreciated the painting and is very impressed by it.

Jennie Chan heard about the volunteer’s introduction of the artist growing background and shared that one's background does not affect one's success. As long as one perseveres and works hard, one will eventually be successful.

The boy on the cattle from the painting Bodhi Practice is a true reflection of the artist, and the monk in the painting symbolizes a brighter future as he walks the path of learning and practicing Buddhism. This painting also shows the equality of buddhanature where even a shepherd boy can step into the gate of wisdom. The artist stated: The journey of life is the road of cultivation; it comes by chance and goes by necessity; all things cannot be taken away but the karma is with us.

Selena says that the bull's eyes are dominant and determined. The painting also shows ice melting as winter passes, with green trees in the background, describing the arrival of spring. Sonya from Sri Lanka mentioned that the piece Enjoy the World Around You is full of Dharma, as the nature of the bull is stubborn and difficult to tame, but the Buddha is able to subdue it. This is just like correcting one's own habits, and naturally revealing one's own Buddha nature.

Delivering the Artworks Across the Sea After a Thousand Miles –WenJung HSU World Tour Exhibition had been successfully completed in FGY Auckland. The Auckland Temple staffs, Hong and Nick Yoong oversaw the delivery of artworks to FGY Christchurch. They drove approximately 1,100 kilometers and took a four-hour ferry to go across the Cook Strait, which is located between North and South Island. After a total of

26 hours of driving, nearly 40 pieces of work were transported to FGY Christchurch. The two brave staffs were warmly greeted by the team in Christchurch, who thanked them for making the long journey and achieving their mission despite the hardship.

The masterpieces of the artists' are large in scale. The exhibition in Christchurch included 7 sculptures, 19 oil paintings and 12 ink paintings.

Setting up the sculpture After a Thousand Miles was the most challenging one as it is very fine and

huge, which required 6 strong men to carry and position the artworks.

The After a Thousand Miles –WenJung HSU World Tour Exhibition will be held by FGY Christchurch from 9th January to 28th March. The exhibition offers an opportunity for the people in Christchurch to enjoy the beauty of oriental art through Wen-Jung HSU’s fantastic works and promotes a cultural dialogue between East and West.

Magnificence of Embroidery

by YAO Hong-Ying Embroider the World with One Stitch and One Thread Magnificence of Embroidery by YAO Hong-Ying was held between 12th December 2020 and 11th April 2021 at Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland.

It kindled the enthusiasm of the public to come to appreciate the artwork.

Ms YAO Hong-Ying grew up in a family of embroidery artists and learned embroidery skills from her childhood.

She skilfully blended the techniques of oil painting, photography and sketches into her embroidery. Her two previous exhibitions held in 2008 and 2010 at Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery NZ were both well received by the public. The 45 art pieces displayed at this exhibition featured different styles of embroidery, such as single-sided embroidery, double-sided embroidery and Sanyi embroidery. There were not only the grand statues of Buddha and Bodhisattva, but also vivid and lifelike flowers, birds, landscapes and human figures, showing her

meticulous observation of life and the vitality of nature to the fullest.

Winnie from FGY Auckland said that visitors would usually spend a considerable amount of time at the Gallery as they stop and admire the exhibition. The organiser thoughtfully prepared magnifying glasses to allow the public to have a closer look at the exquisite works of art. Many Friends of Fo Guang Yuan came to view the artwork straight after they received the event notification, those from other cities had spent hours driving to get here, some were even visitors who returned from the first exhibition back in 2008. The visitors praised the artist’s profound skills and integration of rich embroidery techniques into one piece of art, vividly spread out the beautiful scenery of the world.

It was truly an honour to be able to appreciate such a high-standard art exhibition in New Zealand.

Deputy Commissioner John Tims visited the exhibition on 22nd of December. Abbess Manshin, the Curator of Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery, mentioned that Ms YAO Hong-Ying’s embroidery were made from her heart and mind. The embroidery technique in New Zealand can only split a single thread into sixteen, but this artist with superb skills can achieve sixty four.

John Tims used a magnifying glass to carefully appreciate each piece of the artwork. When he learned that one piece of work would take months to complete, he thought it was very impressive. He also admired that the works are extremely delicate and lifelike. He could feel the artist had devoted wholeheartedly in the artistic creation with patience and care.

Bringing Happiness, Joy and Peace to the Auckland Community Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland held their first Art Buffet on 27th February, where 120 artists, friends

of art gallery, art enthusiasts, and their families and friends from across Auckland attended. Alongside the incredible Magnificence Embroidery Exhibition, the best inhouse made vegetarian food and drinks were also offered.

Gallery staff Vicky welcomed everyone and expressed that the Art Buffet is to share happiness, joy, and peace within the community.

The temple is such a beautiful and peaceful place for everyone to enjoy delicious food with friends and loved ones while enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. Vicky thanked Curator, Venerable Abbess Manshin for leading the team to set up the grand Art Buffet, the Venerables and volunteers for their effort in making tasty food.

Two guided tour sessions of the Magnificence of Embroidery Exhibition were provided where the attendees enjoyed hearing the artist’s story and the techniques used by Ms Yao to create such incredible works. The live performances from the youth group also brought excitement to the Art Buffet.

Attendees appreciated the various food offered and were touched that the volunteers made such delicious food wholeheartedly from six o’clock in the morning to keep it fresh. They enjoyed the buffet and left feeling happy and contented.

Beautiful Daffodils Welcome Guests in Early Spring Floral Artworks in FGY Christchurch From July to October 2020, Curator of Fo Guang Yuan New Zealand Venerable Abbess Manshin, had arranged seven flower arrangements for the Practitioner’s Mind Floral Exhibition. Abbess has never studied floral arrangement, but with years of gardening experience helped her to develop a sense to present highquality floral arrangement. Within three months, Abbess have presented more than 200 floral artworks with limitless creativity and unique rich themes.

The Practitioner’s Mind Floral Exhibition has been well received by the public, making the FGY Christchurch atmosphere full of Ch’an

In order to appreciate the public's for their art’s aesthetics, on 22nd and 23rd of September, FGY Christchurch held

Practitioner’s Mind Floral Arrangement Demonstration for about 40 locals and BLIA members. Abbess patiently explained to the audience her choice and use of materials and the skills involved in floral arrangement.

The audiences were surprised and amazed how simple floral materials can present fresh elegant floral artworks. While demonstrating, Abbess interacted and shared the floral arrangement skills with the audience. Under Abbess’s guidance, the participating audience also successfully presented their unique floral artworks.

Some audiences claimed to have understood the concept of Training the Heart by Focusing on Work by watching how focused Abbess was carrying out her work. One will be able to complete one’s tasks if they are able to focus wholeheartedly on it.

Other audiences said that they have acquired valuable knowledge about their gardens and promised to go treasure hunting for flowers, leaves and twigs in their gardens to use as floral arrangement materials. The audience said that not only have they learned the art of floral arrangement, but also valuable philosophy of life.

The Opening of Light & Art Show at FGS Christchurch Celebrating with Joy On 14th January, about 150 people visited FGS Christchurch to attend the opening ceremony of the Light & Art Show.
