From the Palmavera complex to the Albucciu and Santa Barbara nuraghe, the symbols of a story that dates back thousands of years.

The strategic position of Sardinia as a central point in the Mediterranean had a significant influence on its destiny in the chaotic conflict between Middle Eastern, African and European powers. As a consequence, the island was subject to invasion after invasion over a period of 1500 years, with the imposition of rules from more than a dozen foreign occupants.

However, the most outstanding archaeological wonders in Sardinia were not created under Punic, Roman or Spanish rule, but rather they emerged in a previous era.

The Nuragic age is generally considered as the period that defined the history of Sardinia and takes its name from the thousands of stone towers found throughout the island.

central tower of this brown-red bastion is all that remains of a four-tower fortress, but on looking towards the gentle hills it is easy to see Nuraghe Ruiu leaning towards the road, and other structures in the distance.

This adds strength to the beliefs of historians that these individual towers were originally built as territory markers between tribes, before evolving into completely walled villages.

The Palmavera Complex Situated on the outskirts of one of the most fascinating cities in Sardinia, Alghero, the crumbling remains of the Nuraghe Palmavera are huge and are so close they almost risk rolling onto the nearby road. The site dates back to the 15th century B.C., and includes two towers, the first in limestone and the second in sandstone, both surrounded by a total of approximately 50 circular hits. At its height - around the 9th century B.C. - this site was home to approximately 800 people. An essential part of any visit is the “Meeting Hut”, where the village elders summoned the people and celebrated ancient religious rituals. At the centre of the site is an impressive model of a nuraghe, which had led a number of archaeologists to conclude that the bronzeage towers became objects of worship for later generations.

Nuraghe Albucciu Three kilometres east of Arzachena, in the direction of Olbia, is the two-level fortress that is the Nuraghe Albucciu.

The first nuraghe in Sardinia, of which Albucciu is one, were originally constructed as individual towers and then later expanded to become colossal bronze-age castles. Albucciu was inhabited from 1400 to 900 B.C. and lacks the characteristic cone shape of the typical prehistoric towers in Sardinia.

It is believed that the labyrinth of the nuraghe, made up of narrow lanes and walls, was designed to confuse invaders. It is still possible to walk through its cool rooms and climb the stairs to the terrace on the roof. ♦

I arrive in Cagliari late afternoon and find a hotel just outside the old city centre. It is a modern building complete with tower.

After having crossed the park, I find myself in the charming Via San Giovanni with its characteristic coloured houses. I dine in one of the many typical restaurants, intrigued by one that I come across hidden in a little lane. I am welcomed warmly by the owner

who leads me to my table, set in one of the restaurant’s various alcoves. The speciality here is fish; after all we are just a few hundred metres from the sea.

After a selection of delicious and tasty fish and seafood appetisers, I enjoy a plate of fish ravioli and a mix of Mediterranean fried fish. I finish this off with a cream dessert and, of course, a good Italian espresso. The meal is accompanied by a selection of wines, all rigorously Sardinian and all very particular, even their labels. The young woman who is serving me is very kind and helpful. When I have a problem

The white city The morning after, I meet my guide in a traditional Café, a beautiful place that provides a glimpse of the glorious past of the city, with its bastion in the heart of the centre. We start the tour right here, at the Bastion of Saint Rémy, which overlooks the city. The majestic staircase and the entrance gate are closed for works, but we take a detour that leads up to the wonderful piazza from where we have an incredible view over the port and the sea. My guide is a walking encyclopaedia on Cagliari and gives me a very detailed account of its history. The exbaroque façade of the Duomo, for example, was not in line with the demands of Mussolini, so in the 1930s, a brand new one was made in Pisan style. The inside of the church is particularly fascinating.

The Archaeological Museum We continue our tour with a visit to the Archaeological Museum.

From 1700 to 700 B.C., Sardinia was inhabited by the Nuragic people. The remains of nuraghe can be found throughout the island. These are stone structures ranging from tombs to more fortified settlements with towers and surrounding habitats.

La monumentale scala e il cancello d’ingresso sono chiusi a causa di lavori, ma attraverso una deviazione arriviamo alla meravigliosa piazza dalla quale si ha una incantevole vista sul porto e sul mare. La mia guida sembra avere una conoscenza enciclopedica di Cagliari e ne racconta la storia con dovizia di particolari. L’ex facciata barocca del duomo, ad esempio, non soddisfaceva le esigenze di Mussolini. Così, negli anni ‘30, ne fu realizzata una nuovissima in stile pisano. L’interno della chiesa è molto affascinante.

there was no written language at the time, and so many of these prehistoric remains are shrouded in mystery. My guide talks extensively about the statues in the museum, from the warriors all with a dagger shown on their chest - to the deer and mouflon.

The museum also provides a lot of information on the nuraghe located all over the island and contains at least one object from each of the archaeological sites in Sardina, with cultural information on the conquests that followed the Nuragic period, from the Phoenicians, to the Greeks, the Punic populations and the Romans. “The nuraghe represent exclusively Sardinia and our history” - says my guide with pride. Next to the Archaeological Museum is the National Gallery of Cagliari. Their collection of retables, altarpieces brought here by the Catalan people, is impressive.

We take one of the larger streets, dedicated to shopping, and find ourselves on the waterfront, where the art nouveau municipal building is located. There are guided tours available during the weekend, and I manage to get in thanks to my guide’s contacts. We see the mayor’s office, the old council hall, and various other official areas. There are also a number of works

by Francesco Ciusa, a famous contemporary Sardinia sculptor who has a museum in Nuoro dedicated to him that displays a private collection of his works. One of the most famous

La guida parla ampiamente delle statue e delle statuette del museo, dai guerrieri - tutti con un pugnale raffigurato sul petto - ai cervi e ai mufloni. Inoltre, il museo offre molte informazioni sui nuraghi di tutta l’isola e contiene almeno un oggetto di tutti i siti archeologici della Sardegna, con sovrapposizioni culturali che riguardano i conquistatori successivi ai nuragici: dai Fenici, ai Greci, ai Punici e ai Romani: “I nuraghi riguardano la Sardegna e solo la nostra storia” – ripete con orgoglio la mia guida. Accanto al Museo archeologico si trova la Pinacoteca Nazionale di Cagliari.

the centre. In the past they were migratory, by for the last 30 years they have taken up permanent residence in Cagliari. After a brief car journey, I arrive at the western lake with the flamingos.

I get out of the car, camera at hand... and what are the birds doing? They are all in the water with their heads constantly immersed, and all I can see are their feathery behinds. After a while I give up.

I take a trip across a rough landscape and arrive in Villasimius, 50 kilometres from Cagliari on the south-eastern coast. My hotel is surrounded by a beautiful garden and my room is just a few metres away from

migratori, ma da circa 30 anni rimangono a Cagliari tutto l’anno. Dopo un breve tragitto in auto raggiungo la laguna occidentale con i fenicotteri.

Esco dall’auto, macchina fotografica pronta e cosa stanno facendo i fenicotteri?

Rimangono tutti in acqua con la testa costantemente immersa, quindi vedo solo le natiche piumate. Dopo un po’ mi arrendo.

Attraverso un paesaggio piuttosto accidentato raggiungo Villasimius, a 50 chilometri di distanza da Cagliari, sulla costa sud-orientale. Il mio hotel è circondato da un bellissimo giardino e la mia camera è a poche decine di metri dalla lunga

The sun is already low in the sky, there are still a few tourists on the sand and the cleaning of the beach has already begun.

I decide it is time for a drink, so I go to the bar on the beach and sit on the patio. I enjoy the spectacular orange and red sunset. The morning after, before continuing on my journey, I decide to take a dip in the sea.

It is mid-October, but the sun is shining on the surrounding hills and the sea is a pleasant temperature. Delightful.

I continue on my way, and quickly come to the small but beautiful beach of the Fortezza Vecchia, situated at the foot of a 16th century fortress. Two elderly Italian couples have found a cosy spot here, and there are a few people taking a swim. As well as the fortress, the beach also offers a splendid view of the hills in front. A few kilometres away is another beautiful bay, with the beach of Simius. There are a few resorts serving food and drinks and offering beach umbrellas and sun loungers to rent. After a short stop, I drive to one of the most famous places in Sardinia, Costa Rei, which is about 15 kilometres away.

The temperature has risen to 26 degrees, but there are just a few people on the beautiful and endless beach lapped by the clear blue sea. Some are windsurfing or simply sunbathing.

Autumn and the rest of Europe seems far away. ♦

Il sole è già basso, ci sono ancora alcuni turisti sulla spiaggia ed è già iniziato il servizio di pulizia dell‘arenile. Penso che sia tempo di un aperitivo, quindi vado al bar della spiaggia e mi siedo sul patio.

Mi godo lo spettacolo del tramonto dalle sfumature arancio e rosso. La mattina dopo, prima di andare avanti, voglio tuffarmi in mare. È metà ottobre, ma il sole splende sulle colline circostanti e l’acqua ha una piacevole temperatura. Deliziosa.

Quando riprendo il viaggio, arrivo rapidamente alla piccola ma bella spiaggia della Fortezza Vecchia, situata ai piedi di una fortezza del XVI secolo. Due coppie di anziani italiani si sono stabilite qui e alcune persone si stanno immergendo. Oltre alla fortezza, la spiaggia offre anche una splendida vista sulle colline opposte. A pochi chilometri di distanza si trova la prossima meravigliosa baia, la spiaggia di Simius. Ecco alcuni stabilimenti dove è possibile mangiare e bere e noleggiare anche un ombrellone e una sdraio. Dopo una breve visita guido verso uno dei luoghi più famosi della Sardegna, Costa Rei, a circa 15 chilometri di distanza.

La temperatura è salita a 26 gradi, ma ci sono solo poche persone sulla bellissima e infinita spiaggia che costeggia un mare azzurro. Alcune persone praticano il windsurf o prendono il sole. Non sembra autunno come nel resto dell’Europa del nord. ♦

Maria Lai is probably the most extraordinary and most famous Sardinian artist, as well as the figure who has had the most decisive impact on contemporary Italian art. Born in Ulassai in the Ogliastra area in 1919, she began studying art in Venice in 1943.

From 1945 to 1954 she worked as a drawing teacher in Cagliari, and then decided to move to Rome, where she presented her first exhibition in 1971. In 1978 she took part in the International Art Exhibition in Venice.

In 2006 the station in Ulassai, closed since 1956, became her museum, following the donation from the artist of approxima-

In 2017, her work was shown at Documenta 14 in Kassel, in 2018 at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and in 2019, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth, the National Museum of 21st century art presented a large retrospective featuring 250 works. Maria Lai died in 2013 in Cardedu, the location of her studio for decades. Her art is not restricted to museums.

The Gramsci sculpture “Fiabeintrecciate” is located in front of the museum, the “Maria Lai open air Museum” is an itinerary to discover her various works in Ulassai, and “la strade del rito”, reliefs of fish and bread, runs along the walls leading to Santa Barbara.

It floats happily, as though blown by the wind. It mumbles through the streets and plays with the sun. Buzzes, whispers and chirps at times flick like a whip. And it dives into the depths from Mount Gedili, like an impetuous cascade...

“It” is a ‘simple’ blue ribbon that in the Autumn of 1981 wove its way through the small Ogliastra village of Ulassai.

All the people, houses, doors and roads are interconnected, woven and grouped together with the majestic Mount Gedili, which stretches out from behind the village and soars towards

Borbotta per le strade e gioca con il sole. Ronzii, sussurri e cinguettii, a volte scuotono come una frusta.

E si tuffa dal Monte Gedili nelle profondità, come una cascata impetuosa ... È “solo” un nastro azzurro quello che serpeggia nell’autunno del 1981 attraverso il piccolo villaggio ogliastriano di Ulassai.

Tutti gli esseri umani, case, porte, strade sono interconnessi, intrecciati e raggruppati insieme al magistrale Monte Gedili, che si protende dietro il villaggio e si innalza ripido verso il cielo.

“Legarsi alla montagna” è stato uno spettacolare evento artistico che Maria Lai ha visto come una delle sue opere più importanti: un omaggio alla vita con tutti i suoi

A PORTRAIT OF THE NOBEL-PRIZE WINNER FOR LITERATURE, GRAZIA DELEDDA

When D. H. Lawrence came to Sardinia in 1921, he was struck by its untamed beauty and inscrutable culture and “Sea and Sardinia” is his intense diary of his journey. He travelled with his wife Frieda from Cagliari to Olbia via Nuoro, the birthplace of the Italian author Grazia Maria Cosima Damiana Deledda and, although they had never met, Lawrence had great respect for Deledda’s depth and realism.

Later, in 1926, Deledda won the Nobel prize for literature; the first and only Italian woman to receive the most important recognition in the literary field.

Two years later, in 1928, Lawrence wrote in the introduction to the English edition of Deledda’s novel “The Mother”: “It is this old Sardinia, at least being brought to heel, that is the real theme of Grazia Deledda’s books.

She is fascinated by her island and its folks, more than by the

Her novel “Reeds in the wind” is the yardstick against which all the highly praiseworthy Sardinian writers who have published books, essays and texts of varied nature in the last century have had to measure themselves. Such is the impact of her writing on Sardinian culture that the figure of Deledda represents a formidable and challenging parallel for all those with literary ambitions.

Deledda’s novels paint a portrait of Sardinian rural life, a world that has almost completely vanished, dust carried away by the winds of time. She presents it in an intense and harsh manner, and although those ancestral figures are long gone, the themes that are examined in an almost absurdly contemporary manner remain; human frailty, pride, passion and moral dilemma remain highly topical to this day. Following a controversial football match in 2019, when a number of fans got a little too “over-excited”, Cagliari football club decided to print anti-racism leaflets that were then distributed to all the fans. The leaflet presented a poem by Deledda intitled “We are Sardinians”.

Lo racconta con intensità e durezza e sebbene quelle figure ancestrali siano svanite, rimangono le tematiche affrontate nel segno della modernità più assoluta: la fragilità umana, l’orgoglio, la passione e i dilemmi morali, rimangono rilevanti oggi: dopo una controversa partita di calcio del 2019, quando alcuni fan si sono un po’ “agitati”, il Cagliari ha preso la decisione di stampare volantini antirazzisti che sono stati poi distribuiti a tutti i fan. Il volantino presentava una poesia di Deledda intitolata “Siamo sardi”.

Deledda’s childhood home, which has now been transformed into a museum, is open to the public.

The visit presents a glimpse of the past. The ten rooms set out over three floors have been carefully designed to reveal the domestic life of the author’s family, including a large number of photographs, manuscripts and personal items.

Her remains are in the small church “La Solitudine” located at the foot of Mount Ortobene, the mountain that looms over the city and that Deledda described as “our soul”. It is a park and merits a visit. ♦

Oggi è possibile visitare la casa natale di Deledda diventata museo. La visita offre una finestra sul passato: le dieci stanze su tre piani sono state accuratamente progettate per rivelare la vita domestica della famiglia della scrittrice, tra cui molte fotografie, manoscritti e oggetti personali. THE GAVOI LITERARY FESTIVAL In the month of July in the heart of the Gennargentu park, the small village of Gavoi plays host to an annual literary festival entitled “The island of stories”.

While the population of the village is usually around 2,500, for a period of four days the cobbled streets fill with avid readers, journalists, artists and musicians who come to see the best and most brilliant national and international writers.

More than 80 events, with readings, workshops and exhibitions take place in squares, gardens and even on the balconies of the village’s houses.

THE SARDINIAN CULINARY JOURNEY BEGINS WITH A SELECTION OF TYPICAL COLD CUTS AND CHEESES

Eating out in Sardinia is one of the best reasons to explore Italy. Typical Sardinian food is not easy to find on the mainland, so in order to eat Sardinian, you need to go to Sardinia.

Many people associate Italian food with a handful of dishes that have by now become international, but Sardinia is a perfect example of how regional Italian food can be. It is a cuisine based on the local environment, and on all this land has to offer. After having travelled extensively in Italy over the last twenty years, my exploration of Sardinian food left me amazed by the variety of dishes available on the island.

Beginning an evening in Sardinia often involves the ritual of cheese and cold cuts:

Dopo aver viaggiato spesso in Italia negli ultimi vent’anni, la mia esplorazione del cibo sardo mi ha lasciato sbalordita dalla varietà di piatti disponibili sull’isola.

it is here that the island’s long history of these traditional foods comes together. Families and friends come together for an aperitif, accompanying these delicacies with wine.

A piece of wood is served, covered in bread and local Sardinian cheeses, which normally include the Pecorino DOP, either fresh, soft and delicate or matured and hard.

Sardinian cheese is generally produced from sheep or goat milk. These cheeses are accompanied by classic cold cuts, including the outstanding Sardinian salami. The ritual selection of cold cuts and cheeses is followed by a typical Sardinian dinner, which traditionally includes a local

The most enticing Sardinian pastas are the Culurgiones, a large type of ravioli stuffed with pecorino cheese, potatoes and often fresh mint in the Ogliastra version. A typical portion of Culurgiones is no more than six or seven pieces, as they are very large and filling.

This type of pasta is usually served in a delicate tomato sauce with pecorino and walnuts, or in a creamy mushroom and cheese sauce.

Seafood is often a feature of Sardinian main courses, but the land also offers a number of unique dishes to try.

Sardinia is mainly known for its meat dishes, including stews where the tougher meats are slowly cooked with tomatoes, onions, garlic and other condiments until it is soft and tender. Another typical meat dish is the characteristic Su Porcheddu, the Sardinian suckling pig, which is often found both in countryside

La Sardegna è nota soprattutto per i suoi piatti di carne in umido: dove a volte la carne poco tenera viene cotta lentamente in pomodori, cipolle, aglio e altri condimenti fino a quando non diventa morbida e tenera. Altro piatto di carne è il caratteristico Su Porcheddu, il maialino da latte sardo, che si trova comunemente sia nei ristoranti e agriturismi di campagna che nelle città.

restaurants and farmhouses and in the city. It is traditionally prepared by wrapping the pig in bay and myrtle leaves and then slowly roasting the pig on an open fire. The pig is roasted until the skin is crispy and the meat beneath is still tender and juicy. Another dish to try is snails, which are cooked in a spicy tomato and chilli pepper sauce. They are served with chopped garlic, white wine and parsley, and are typical in the Sassari area. Lastly is the most famous Sardinian dessert, the Sebada. It is a light fried cheese ravioli with pecorino and lemon zest in fresh pastry.

The Sebadas are served with honey, and they are the perfect conclusion to an evening spent discovering Sardinia through its cuisine. ♦

Wine is the perfect expression of the coming together of humankind and nature and was created at the dawn of time. Italy, with its 355 native vines, is one of the countries that has played an important role in the history of wine. Sardinia, an ancient land with a rich terroir, is attributed with 41 native vines and another 10 are in the process of being approved.

The five most important and representative are the Cannonau, the Carignano and the Monica for the reds, and the Vermentino and the Nuragus for the whites.

These varieties provide for wines of great character, just like the land they originate from. Intense, wild and fragrant, kissed by the sun and caressed by the winds.

Here we present them and their main characteristics.

We begin with the Vermentino di Gallura, the only DOCG wine from the island. This variety came to Sardinia from Spain via Liguria

Il vino è il perfetto connubio uomo - natura e nasce nella notte dei tempi. Tra i Paesi che hanno fatto la storia del vino a livello mondiale c’è l’Italia con i suoi 355 vitigni autoctoni.

Alla Sardegna, terra antica e dal ricco terroir, ne vengono attribuiti ben 41 e altri dieci sono in fase di approvazione.

I cinque più importanti e rappresentativi sono: il cannonau, il carignano e il monica a bacca rossa; il vermentino e il nuragus a bacca bianca. Da queste varietà in Sardegna si ottengono vini di grande carattere, come la terra dalla quale hanno origine.

colour with green highlights. Its bouquet is floral and fruity, and it has a fresh, dry taste, with full-bodied notes and strong minerality.

The Cannonau is the oldest vine in the Mediterranean, and its origins are still uncertain, perhaps brought from the Orient by the Phoenicians or

the Spanish. In reality, recent archaeological findings of small black berries dated back to the nuragic period and found to be similar to the Cannonau have led to this variety being considered native to Sardinia.

Here it has found the ideal conditions for growth and development, and it has become the most representative variety from the island. It is usually used to produce reds or at times rose wines; rarely whites.

Ma è il rosso, il vero colore del Cannonau, un rosso rubino carico. Al naso si presenta con gli intensi profumi di frutti rossi, spezie, erbe aromatiche con qualche nota balsamica.

nau, is a rich ruby shade. It offers an intense fragrance of red fruits, spices, aromatic herbs and balsamic notes. It is velvety, intense and full-bodied on the palate, with elegant tanins and a wild touch. The Carignano del Sulcis has uncertain origins.

It is possible that it came to the area of Sulcis, the island of Sant’Antioco to the south-west of Sardinia, via the Phoenicians, adapting perfectly to the climate and the strong sea winds. In

The Monica is one of the most ancient vines and is probably of Spanish origin. It is a wine with a garnet-red colour andhas an intense fragrance of small red fruits. On the palate it is soft, mineral and mildly tannic.

The origins of the Nuragus, a white grape variety, are lost

in the mists of time, but could have been once again introduced by the Phoenician voyagers into the southern part of Sardinia. As well as the production of still wines, its grapes, if harvested early, can be used for the production of sparkling wines.

In the glass the Nuragus is straw-yellow in colour, and has a fresh, citrus flavour. On the palate it is dry and full-bodied, with a good level of acidity. ♦

TRAVELLING IN SARDINIA In Sardinia, the transport system is primarily entrusted/assigned to road and rail modes, with shipping links to the minor islands. The main road network is spread over a route that connects the south of the regional capital Cagliari first to Oristano, on the west coast, then towards Sassari in the north-west, and Nuoro and Olbia in the north-east. The rest of the road network of the island, winds up among the high slopes of the hinterland and 1,897 km of coastline, offering breathtaking views.

BY TRAIN The railway system of Sardinia is divided into a main line linking the northern ports of Olbia and Porto Torres, with the regional capital, in the south. Inside the island also operate the ‘Ferrovie della Sardegna’ on tracks of haunting beauty which lead the line gauge through forests, gorges and mountain passes.

1_ LU O G O SA N TO Luogosanto has stood on a hill overlooking the Liscia valley since Medieval times. Its name originates from the presence of the sanctuaries of Trano and Nicola, it has been declared by the Vatican as a “Marian City” for the reported appearance of the Virgin Mary, and in 2019 it was also declared a City of Wine, due to the numerous vineyards and wineries in the area that produce, above all, the typical Vermentino di Gallura.

Fin dal Medioevo, Luogosanto si erge su una collina da cui domina la vallata del Liscia. Deve il suo nome ai santuari di Trano e Nicola, è stata insignita dal Vaticano del titolo di Città Mariana e dal 2019 è anche una Città del vino, grazie ai numerosi vigneti e alle cantine che producono, soprattutto, il tipico Vermentino di Gallura.

Palau is overlooked by “Bear rock”, a natural monument that looks out over the archipelago and Corsica. Along the coast is the famous tourist village of Porto Rafael, and further north is Isola dei Gabbiani and Porto Pollo, a windsurfer and kite surfers’ paradise.

È una delle località costiere più rinomate della Sardegna, transfrontaliera all’isola di La Maddalena. Palau è dominata dalla roccia dell’Orso, un monumento naturale che guarda l’arcipelago e la Corsica. 3 _ PA D R U Located in the valley of the River Lerno, Padru looks out over the four peaks of Mount Nieddu, a more-than one-thousand-metre-high ridge that offers very easy climbing opportunities.

From the peak, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panorama. Padru is the location of the first ever agrotourism venue in Sardinia, and currently the highest concentration of this type of tourist property can be found here, with approximately 20 establishments.

4_IRGOLI The countryside surrounding this town in Baronia was the location for the finding of two pintaderas, stones carved with an ancient Sardinian symbol. The first dates back to the prehistoric period, while the second is Nuragic.

They are exhibited in the Antiquarium, the local municipal museum. The area of Irgoli is particularly suited to treks on horseback, by bicycle or on foot.

Nelle campagne di questo paese della Baronia sono state ritrovate due pintadere: si tratta di due pietre con inciso un antico simbolo sardo.

La prima risalente al periodo protostorico, la seconda al nuragico. Sono esposte nel locale museo comunale Antiquarium. Il territorio di Irgoli si presta molto bene a escursioni a cavallo, in bici e a piedi.

The area offers plenty of tourist attractions, including the Romanzesu nuragic site, the museum dedicated to traditional polyphonic singing and the exhibition of the BittiRex dinosaur. The Cinema Ariston offers a continuous programme of international exhibitions, the most recent dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci.

Il paese è situato in Barbagia, al confine con il Monte Acuto. It is no surprise that a region where tradition and modernity come together can become the home for a different and original form of artisanship.

From the working of cork to the ancient weaving of rugs, or the fascinating expressions of the masks, Sardinian crafts offer visitors the chance to take something unique home with them.

The beautiful images in wood produced in Sardinia are not dissimilar to African masks. These are physical links to the island’s mythology, its divinities, and the cycle of life and death. The Mamuthones are the most famous masks, but they are joined by the Boes and Merdules from Ottana, fascinating creations with their roots lying deep in the agricultural past of the island, describing life in the fields. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for Carnival to buy one. In Gallura, Santa Teresa Gallura and Isola Rossa there are local artisans who create true works of art in their workshops.

Another representation of the agricultural past are the Gallura-style carpets, true treasures that date back to ancient textile traditions. The artisans still work with horizontal and manual wooden looms, surrounded by the warm colours of carpets, blankets and tapestries. Each carpet is made in linen, cotton or Sardinian wool, with typical geometric patterns set in strips with

Non c’è da meravigliarsi che una regione dove si incrociano tradizione e contemporaneità possa far prevalere un artigianato diverso e originale.

Dalla lavorazione del sughero all’antica tessitura di tappeti o le sorprendenti espressioni delle maschere, l’artigianato sardo offre a tanti la possibilità di portarsi via, a casa, un pezzo unico.

Assomigliano a maschere africane, le bellissime immagini di legno prodotte in Sardegna. Sono il legame tangibile con i miti dell’isola, le figure divine, il ciclo della vita e la morte. Sono i Mamuthones, le maschere più conosciute; ma anche i Boes e Merdules di Ottana, affascinanti creazioni radicate nel passato agropastorale che descrivono la vita nei campi. Per fortuna non bisogna aspettare Carnevale per acquistarne una: in Gallura, a Santa Teresa Gallura e all’Isola Rossa, ci sono artigiani locali che nei loro laboratori creano delle vere opere d’arte.

Un’altra dimostrazione del passato agropastorale sono i tappeti galluresi, autentici gioielli che risalgono all’antica usanza tessile. Ancora oggi le artigiane lavorano sui telai di legno, orizzontali e manuali, in mezzo ai colori caldi dei tappeti, delle coperte e degli arazzi. Ogni tappeto viene realizzato in lino, in cotone o in lana sarda, con i tipici motivi: date, elementi geometrici disposti

symbolic names and meanings. In order to find out more about the history of weaving, it is well worth paying a visit to the Ethnographic Museum in Aggius, which plays host to a permanent exhibition of local carpets. In the main hall, weavers demonstrate their ancient art, expressing their passion and technique.

Sardinia is often synonymous with cork. In fact, of the 15 thousand tons of cork produced in Italy, 12 thousand come from the island. The undisputed capital of cork is Calangianus. It is here that a particular type of oak, the Quercus Suber, is found, the bark of which is processed for the extraction of this precious natural material with exceptional properties that render it suitable for a wide range of uses. Wandering through the cork forests is like going back in timetwo thousand years. The Romans used cork to create floats for nets, food containers, spouts and stoppers. It was however the French, at the beginning of the 1800s, who allowed the people of Gallura to once more continue the work of their ancestors. This return to production was such an enormous success that Calangianus became an international centre for the production of cork, as demonstrated by the Museum of Cork and the professional training institute, where the professors hand down their skills, historical knowledge and love of the craft.

The processing of cork is a delicate activity that requires refinement. It begins with the extraction, always carried out manually, which takes place between May and August. The bark is detached from the trunk to be left to mature for at least a year. Once maturing is complete, the slabs of bark are boiled at 120 degrees and then processed according to the application required.

Furnishings, clothing, building or footwear; the excellent characteristics of cork mean that this raw material has a wide range of uses. The next time you open a bottle of Cannonau of Sardinia, spare a thought for the generations of Gallura artisans who have put their hearts into that small and priceless object that is the cork. A thought for all the artisans who pass on their knowledge, devotion and love for this amazing land. ♦

Nella sala principale le tessitrici dimostrano la loro arcaica arte e raccontano la loro passione e esperienza tecnica.

Chi dice Sardegna, dice sughero. Infatti, delle 15mila tonnellate di sughero prodotte in Italia, l’isola ne produce 12mila. La capitale indiscussa del sughero è Calangianus. E’ lì che si trova una particolare specie di quercia, la Quercus Suber, della quale si lavora la corteccia per l’estrazione di questo prezioso materiale naturale con proprietà eccezionali che ne consentono un ampio utilizzo. Passeggiando tra i sughereti è come se il tempo si fosse fermato duemila anni fa. I romani usavano il sughero per ricavarne galleggianti per reti, vasi per alimenti, versatori e tappi. Furono però i francesi all’inizio dell’800 a consentire ai galluresi di riconnettersi con la consuetudine dei loro antenati. Il successo fu enorme, tanto che Calangianus diventò un centro mondiale per la produzione del sughero come testimoniano il Museo del sughero e la scuola professionale, dove i docenti diffondono competenza, coscienza storica e amore per il mestiere. La lavorazione del sughero è un’attività delicata che richiede finezza. Comincia con l’estrazione, esclusivamente manuale, che si svolge tra maggio e agosto. Viene distaccata la corteccia dal tronco per essere portata a stagionare per almeno un anno. Dopo la stagionatura le plance di corteccia vengono fatte bollire a 120 gradi e verranno di seguito lavorate a seconda del settore di applicazione.

Oggettistica, abbigliamento, edilizia o calzature: le ottime caratteristiche del sughero fanno sì che questa materia prima abbia una vasta gamma di realizzazioni. La prossima volta che stapperò una bottiglia di Cannonau di Sardegna, un pensiero andrà alle generazioni di artigiani galluresi che hanno messo tutta l’anima in quel piccolo e preziosissimo oggetto che è il tappo di bottiglia.

Un pensiero per tutti gli artigiani che tramandano conoscenza, dedizione e amore per questa fantastica Terra. ♦

The choice of the Group to formally commit to environmental, economic and social sustainability is in response to a very precise company mission to promote growth, balancing company interests with those of all figures involved.

The concept of company social responsibility has, in recent years, assumed a very central role for businesses. In the past, the priority for companies was to earn profits and create value for its shareholders. Now, the themes of economic, social and environmental sustainability have assumed an extremely important role, above all for younger generations (the so-called Millennials, who in 2020 will count for more than 35% of the workforce), which, in choosing a product or service to purchase and an organisation to work for, also consider the positive impact that this generates for the environment and the territory.

through a development programme that sets very precise goals. Can you tell us more about these goals?

A number of years ago we started to render our infrastructures increasingly efficient through an investment programme that has progressively led us to achieve significant results in the reduction of consumption and emissions. For example, we have replaced all of the old lighting units with the latest generation LED technology; we have launched a programme for the substitution of airport vehicles and equipment with electric-powered units, and in the last year, we have set up a monitoring system for all sources of emissions as well as a series of specific procedures aimed at reducing these emissions significantly. In particular, our programme provides for the reduction of annual CO2 emissions by approximately 500 tons a year, with a commitment to further increase this amount in the successive three-year period. All of these activities are also part of an international programme called “Airport Carbon Accreditation” launched by the leading sector association, the Airport Council International. This programme, adhesion to which is on a voluntary basis, calls for participating airports to map and reduce the production of CO2 deriving from airport activity through action plans that involve not only airport management companies but also all the various people and organisations that interact with the airport structure (subcontractors, passengers, employees of companies operating within the airport area, etc.). As already mentioned, beginning this year we have eliminated disposable plastics from all of the food outlets inside the airport, at the same time introducing compostable and biodegradable materials. With the collaboration of our suppliers, we are working to substitute plastic water bottles in shops and food outlets with eco-compatible products. Our aim is to become a plastic-free airport by 2024.

“Già da diversi anni abbiamo iniziato a rendere le nostre infrastrutture sempre più efficienti attraverso un programma di investimento che progressivamente ci ha portato ad ottenere degli importanti risultati in termini di riduzione dei consumi e delle emissioni. Ad esempio, sono stati sostituiti tutti i corpi illuminanti ad incandescenza con led di ultima generazione; abbiamo lanciato un programma per la sostituzione dei veicoli e delle attrezzature aeroportuali con mezzi a propulsione elettrica; mentre nell’ultimo anno abbiamo implementato un sistema di monitoraggio di tutte le fonti di emissioni ed elaborato procedure specifiche che mirano a ridurle significativamente. Nello specifico, il nostro piano di riduzione delle emissioni di CO2 prevede un abbattimento annuo di circa 500 tonnellate l’anno, con l’impegno di incrementare ulteriormente questa quota nel triennio successivo. Tutte queste attività fanno inoltre parte di un programma mondiale lanciato dalla principale associazione di categoria ACI (Airport Council International”) chiamato “Airport Carbon Accreditation”. Attraverso questo programma, la cui adesione è su base volontaria, gli aeroporti si impegnano a mappare e diminuire la produzione di CO2 derivante dall’attività aeroportuale attraverso piani di azione che coinvolgono non solo le società di gestione ma anche tutti coloro che gravitano intorno all’infrastruttura aeroportuale (sub-concessionari, passeggeri, dipendenti di aziende operanti nel sedime etc.). Come già accennato, a partire dal 2019 abbiamo eliminato da tutti i punti di ristorazione all’interno dell’aeroporto la plastica monouso, introducendo materiali compostabili e biodegradabili. Stiamo lavorando, con il contributo dei nostri fornitori, per sostituire le bottigliette d’acqua di plastica in vendita con prodotti eco compatibili. Il nostro obiettivo è diventare un aeroporto “plastic free” entro il 2024”.

The introduction of technological tools in the company and its processes helps significantly, and very often these are fundamental in the reaching of environmental sustainability goals.

La riduzione dell’impatto ambientale, l’efficienza nell’utilizzo delle risorse, il coinvolgimento degli stakeholder, rappresentano l’obiettivo. Per raggiungerlo sono necessari importanti investimenti.

Let’s take, for example, the autonomous production of electricity from renewable sources, the use of new compostable materials, or the introduction and progressive development of artificial intelligence, a tool that allows for the rapid and precise management of all operative and administrative company processes, making an enormous improvement to the efficiency of the company and consequently reducing the waste that often has a negative impact on the environment. However, without a positive attitude towards the environment and society, even the most modern technology alone is not enough in order to achieve the goals of environmental sustainability that have been set.

By encouraging a positive culture in the company means first and foremost involving all those who take part in the management and production of services. I would say that, at least with regards to Olbia Airport, experience has taught us that every single individual, at times unconsciously, is naturally oriented towards environmental responsibility. Very often all that is needed is a little encouragement in order to foster an attitude of environmental responsibility. A few simple initiatives adopted by Geasar have in fact quickly met with unexpected and particularly positive success. For example, this year has seen the elimination of plastic bottles in our offices, and the plastics used in the food outlets have been replaced with biodegradable materials.

Everyone, airport employees and users alike, have shown appreciation for the initiative, accepting the small sacrifices that these changes have required.

Does this company vision also have an effect on the choice of partners?

One of the fundamental steps in the integration of sustainability themes in company strategy is the involvement of stakeholders. The aim is to stimulate virtuous actions and behaviour with all stakeholders through efficient communication aimed at fostering a sense of responsibility and through the setting of sustainability standards in line with our vision, standards that our suppliers are obliged to progressively adopt. This new vision also means valorising local supply chains, one of the parameters examined in our sustainability report, and every year increasing the number of suppliers from the local territory in order to contribute to the economic development of the community. ♦

Direi che, almeno per quanto riguarda l’aeroporto di Olbia, la nostra esperienza ci dice che ogni singolo individuo, a volte inconsciamente, è naturalmente orientato verso la responsabilità ambientale.

Molto spesso quindi è sufficiente uno stimolo per attivare la responsabilità verso l’ambiente. Alcune semplici iniziative adottate da Geasar hanno infatti riscontrato un successo inaspettatamente rapido e particolarmente positivo. Ad esempio, a partire da quest’anno sono state eliminate le bottigliette di plastica nei nostri uffici ed è stata sostituita la plastica nei punti di ristoro con materiali biodegradabili. Tutti, dipendenti e utenti dell’aeroporto, hanno dimostrato di gradire l’iniziativa, accettando i piccoli sacrifici che queste iniziative hanno comportato”.

Questa vision aziendale fungerà da bussola anche nella scelta dei partner?

“Uno dei passaggi fondamentali per l’integrazione delle tematiche di sostenibilità nella strategia aziendale è il coinvolgimento degli stakeholder.

The airport of Alghero Riviera del Corallo is located in the north-west of the island and represents, with the harbour of Porto Torres, an important gateway to the territory. This building is one of the most iconic venues in Sardinia, with its extremely high bell-tower and its characteristic white and dark stripes.

The Basilica is located just a short distance from Sassari on the road to Olbia, in the municipality of Codrongianus. It was built in 1116 in the Roman-Pisan style by the Sovereigns of the District of Torres and is still in impressive condition.

L’edificio è uno dei luoghi più iconici della Sardegna, con il suo altissimo campanile e il caratteristico colore bianco e scuro in alternanza. La basilica si trova a poca distanza da Sassari, lungo la strada che porta a Olbia, nel comune di Codrongianus. E’ stata costruita nel 1116 in stile romanico-pisana dai sovrani del Giudicato di Torres ed è ancora ben conservata.

On the outskirts of Sassari is a very ancient megalithic settlement, dating back more than 5 thousand years. The terraced pyramid structure is reminiscent of the ziqqurats of Mesopotamia, and there is no other constriction of its kind anywhere else in the Mediterranean. A truly unique site built by the pre-nuragic culture whose majesty can still be seen today.

Nella periferia di Sassari sorge un antichissimo insediamento megalitico, risalente a oltre 5 mila anni fa. La struttura piramidale a gradoni ricorda le ziqqurat della Mesopotamia e non esiste in tutto il Mediterraneo un edificio simile: un vero pezzo unico, costruito dai prenuragici e arrivato a noi ancora riconoscibile nella sua imponenza.

The “capital” of the Logudoro region is a city with ancient farming traditions set in an area which bears the signs of settlements dating back thousands of years. More than 5 thousand years ago this area was already inhabited and was the site of one of the first cultures on the island. Many relics can be found in the local archaeological museum, an essential place to visit to understand the greatness of the pre-nuragic civilisation.

La “capitale” del Logudoro è una citta dalle antiche tradizionali agro-pastorali che sorge in un territorio antropizzato da svariati millenni.

Oltre 5 mila anni fa questa zona era già abitata e si sviluppò una delle prime culture isolane: molti reperti si trovano nel museo archeologico locale, indispensabile per valutare la grandezza della civiltà prenuragica.

Along with Losa and Barumini, it is one of the most famous nuraghe in Sardinia. A visit to Santu Antine, in Torralba, allows visitors to really understand the level of civilisation, ability and power of the people who inhabited Sardinia in the prehistoric age. A ten-metre high tower looms over the surrounding land and dominates the nuragic village and the external walls.

Insieme al Losa e a Barumini, è il nuraghe più famoso della Sardegna. La visita a Santu Antine, a Torralba, consente di cogliere appieno il grado di civiltà, la competenza e la potenza delle genti che abitarono la Sardegna in epoca preistorica. 5 _ SA N T U LU S S U R GIU This town is set in the crater of an ancient inactive volcano in the mountains of Montiferru.

The current town centre dates back to the Medieval period, and it is easy to be drawn into the historical atmosphere as you walk the steep and narrow lanes, often making way for passing riders on horseback. The horses are also the stars of a daredevil charge that takes place during the Carnival period and is known as Sa Carrela e’ nanti.

Il paese è accovacciato all’interno di un antico cratere spento, nelle montagne del Montiferru. L’attuale centro urbano risale all’epoca medievale e non è difficile immergersi nell’atmosfera storica, mentre si percorrono le ripide e strette viuzze, spesso da condividere con il transito di cavalli e cavalieri. A steep hill, on which sits a castle built in 1129, surrounded by a small town clinging to the hillside. For approximately 900 years, the enchanting panorama of Burgos has remained almost completely unchanged. The town centre looks out over the forest of the same name, and over that of Badde Salighes, populated by wild horses, donkeys and many other forms of endemic fauna.

Una collina ripida, su cui spicca un castello edificato nel 1129, e sotto le case di un piccolo paese abbarbicato al monte. Da circa 900 anni il suggestivo panorama che offre Burgos è quasi immutato, il centro urbano si affaccia sulla foresta omonima e su quella di Badde Salighes, popolate da cavalli selvatici, asinelli e molta altra fauna endemica.

My friends from Rome and Piedmont told me about Sardinia, describing the island’s magnificent beaches, the green and turquoise waters, and even the delicious food, such as pecorino cheese.

A good many years ago, Sardinia was chosen for the international calendar, taking the place of the Sanremo Rally. As a result, I came to Sardinia to follow the stages of the World Championships here and discovered that there were magnificent landscapes to rival and even beat mainland Italy.

Now, after 15 editions included in the International calendar, it would be hard to imagine there not being a stage held in Sardinia.

My first visit was in 1990 for the Costa Smeralda Rally. At the time I discovered special places such as Isuledda, and other beaches populated by the international jet set. When in 2004 the rally trials became an annual feature of the World Championships, I discovered many other places, and Sardinia has continued to become ever more attractive. In fact, every year I count the days until I return.

The flights connecting Alghero, Olbia and Cagliari with the airport of Girona or Barcelona make it easy to get here, and all the logistic problems that I had years ago have disappeared.

Thanks to these convenient connections, on various occasions I have come to Sardinia to

THE STAGES IN A FASCINATING

I miei amici romani e piemontesi mi raccontarono della Sardegna e lo fecero descrivendomi le magnifiche spiagge dell’isola, delle acque verdi e turchesi, e anche dei deliziosi prodotti alimentari, come il formaggio pecorino.

Tempo fa avvenne che la Sardegna fu scelta per il calendario mondiale, rilevando uno spazio che fino a quel momento era stato occupato dal Rally di Sanremo. Perciò io venni in Sardegna per seguire la tappa mondiale, e scoprii che c’erano scenari magnifici, pari o superiori a quelli dell’Italia peninsulare.

Ora, dopo 15 edizioni inserite nel calendario mondiale, sarebbe difficile immaginare l’assenza della tappa sarda. La mia prima visita risale al 1990, per il rally Costa Smeralda. E sì, ho scoperto luoghi speciali come Isuledda, e altre spiagge che sono frequentate dal jet set di livello internazionale. Quando nel 2004 la prova di rally è stata inserita come appuntamento annuale del mondiale, ho scoperto tanti altri posti e la Sardegna per me è diventata sempre più attraente. E infatti, ogni anno, conto i giorni che mancano al mio ritorno.

I collegamenti aerei tra Alghero, Olbia e Cagliari, e l’aeroporto di Girona oppure Barcellona rendono molto facile lo spostamento e tutti i problemi logistici che avevo tanti anni fa, sono spariti.

Sfruttando questa felice soluzione aerea, mi è

A beautiful place that I used as a base to follow the races. This solution allowed me to have time to explore the island with my Sardinian friends, and I have discovered secret, hidden places that you don’t usually have the time to visit when you are working. Over time, I have created a fairly precise mental map, with the relative notes, a kind of mental log book that I use to remember the little restaurants in the towns far from the coast and the sea; I have no problem localising my memories of villages on the mountainside and all those wonderful settings that are still waiting to be discovered. I even remember the location of a petrol station where they serve a really spectacular espresso.

It would be unthinkable for me to not return to see the World Rally cars flying over the jump on Mount Lerno or sliding around Coiluna-Loelle,

In questo modo ho avuto il tempo per esplorare l’isola con i miei amici sardi e ho scoperto dei luoghi segreti, molto nascosti, che normalmente non si trova il tempo di visitare quando si lavora.

Nel corso del tempo nella mia mente si è formata una mappa piuttosto precisa, con i relativi appunti di viaggio: una sorta di diario di bordo mentale, che uso per ricordarmi i piccoli ristoranti situati nei paesi lontani dalla costa e dal mare; geolocalizzo facilmente, con i miei ricordi, dove si trovano quei villaggi appesi alle montagne, e tutti quegli scenari meravigliosi che devono ancora essere scoperti.

Mi ricordo perfino dove si trovano le stazioni di servizio in cui fanno un caffè espresso spettacolare.

Oggi per me sarebbe impensabile non tornare per

although it appears that the splendid Power Stage in Argentiera is not part of the 2020 itinerary. The Sardinian stages of the Rally are challenging, long and fast sections, roads that at times are extremely narrow with surfaces that really put the tyres to the test under splendid sunshine (and you might even ask what makes us stand there in the heat, on the dusty roads, and not in the cool of the beaches... but we rally enthusiasts are like this and we only care about watching the WRC cars slide as they countersteer around bends).

All those wonderful places have allowed Sardinia to become famous all around the world, and in fact all the fans of the World Rally Championship immediately recognise the island, even if they have never been here before. There are few sports that have this effect. And this is why it was a real pleasure for me to celebrate my 400 WRC trials in Sardinia in 2015, in a place where I am proud to have so many friends. ♦

Le prove sarde sono impegnative, tratti lunghi e veloci, strade a volte strette dove la terra si 'mangia' le gomme sotto un sole splendido (e magari verrebbe voglia di ragionare sui motivi che ci spingono a stare lì al caldo, tra le strade polverose, e non al fresco, in spiaggia... ma noi appassionati di rally siamo fatto così e non ci importa altro che guardare le auto WRC scivolare in controsterzo in curva).

Tutti quei bellissimi luoghi sono serviti per far conoscere la Sardegna nel resto del mondo e infatti tutti i fan del World Rally Championship, riconoscono immediatamente l’isola, anche se non ci sono mai stati. E pochi sport fanno questo effetto. Ecco perché, per me, è stato davvero un piacere celebrare le mie 400 prove WRC in Sardegna, nel 2015, dove conto con orgoglio parecchie amicizie. ♦

Seven peaks of around 1000 metres each dominate South-East Sardinia. Around this mountainous area a natural reserve has been constructed that protects 10 thousand hectares of forest land. Canyons and gullies create a wild and fascinating landscape, and there are various grottoes that can be visited.

2 _ SA N LU R I The Castle of Sanluri is located in the Campidano plain and protects the city of the same name. It is one of the most important locations in Sardinian history, as it was the setting, in 1409, of the battle between the district of Arborea and the Kingdom of Aragon.

The area is also the location for the Duca d’Aosta Museum and a number of beautiful urban and countryside churches.

Nella pianura del Campidano sorge il Castello di Sanluri, che protegge la cittadina omonima. Si tratta di uno dei luoghi di maggior importanza nella storia della Sardegna perché qui si combatté, nel 1409, la battaglia tra il Giudicato di Arborea e il regno Aragonese. A town famous for its chestnut festival. In the Autumn, the entire area is coloured with golden vegetation, a beautiful and extremely productive context for the booming dried fruit sector. Aritzo also has an ethnographic museum dedicated to the farming traditions of the Barbagia area.

Il paese della famosa sagra delle castagne: nei mesi autunnali l’intero territorio comunale si trasforma in una distesa di vegetazione colorata d’oro, un contesto bello e anche estremamente produttivo, per la fiorente economia di raccolta e vendita della frutta secca. Ad Aritzo troviamo anche un museo etnografico dedicato alla tradizione agropastorale barbaricina.

The area of Seùlo has the largest number of centenarians in the world. Among the towns in the area, in proportion to the population, there is a record percentage of people over the age of 100. The town of Seùlo has become famous worldwide for the lifestyle of its inhabitants and for the surrounding uncontaminated wilderness.

It is the heart of the Sardinian Blue Zone.

La Barbagia di Seùlo è l’area con il maggior numero di centenari al mondo: nei paesi del territorio, in proporzione alla popolazione, c’è una percentuale da record di persone con più di 100 anni. Il paese di Seùlo è diventato famoso ovunque, per lo stile di vita dei suoi abitanti e per la natura incontaminata. È il cuore della blue zone sarda.

The mountain towers at over 800 metres in the centre of the Campidano plain and has been known since ancient times as an abundant source of obsidian, the beautiful and highly sought-after black mineral. There are a number of towns at the feet and on the ridge of the mountain, including Ales, the birthplace of Antonio Gramsci, and Pau home to the Museum of Obsidian.

La montagna si erge a oltre 800 metri d’altezza nel mezzo della pianura del Campidano ed è molto nota fin dall’antichità per la presenza abbondante di ossidiana, il bellissimo e ricercato minerale nero. Diversi centri abitati si trovano alle falde e sulla costa del monte, tra questi Ales, il paese natale di Antonio Gramsci, e Pau che ospita il museo dell’ossidiana.

The sacred temple dedicated to the God of the ancient Sardinians, Sardus Pater, is located just a few kilometres from Fluminimaggiore and is one of the most important and famous monuments on the island. The location of the temple has been a place of worship since the nuragic period. From here, an ancient Roman road leads to the nearby grottoes of Su Mannau, which can be visited.

Il tempio sacro dedicato al dio degli antichi sardi Sardus Pater si trova a pochi chilometri da Fluminimaggiore ed è uno dei monumenti più importanti e famosi di tutta l’isola. By examining the history of textile production of a town, you can learn a lot about its history and that of the local people. For those coming to Sardinia with no previous knowledge of the rich history of textile production on the island, it may come as a surprise to discover the significant role that textiles play in Sardinian culture. After having taken part in a specialist tour of Sardinia in August, my advice to those visiting the island for its beautiful beaches is to set aside some time to spend inland, where the true beauty of the place can be seen in the numerous local museums, historical sites and centres of textile production. Here, in the midst of a peaceful and picturesque landscape, is Samugheo. In this town, there are artisans who still work with traditional manual methods, and where detailed information of the fascinating history of Sardinia can be found.

The small town of Samugheo, in central Sardinia, is known as the textiles “capital” of Sardinia, particularly for its rugs, tapestries and traditional costumes. Being an area dedicated to the textile arts, one of the most captivating aspects to be seen on entering the town are the murals painted on the houses depicting locally designed rugs. ahead, the factory of Mariantonia Urru, whose internationally recognised work is a combination of manual weaving and the use of technologically advanced jacquard machines. In the past, every family in Sardinia had its own horizontal loom, and produced its own fabrics, but now there are relatively few weavers who still keep the old traditions alive. To the north of the city is the impressive Regional Museum of Sardinian Textile Arts, the MURATS Museum, whose two floors provide an exhaustive presentation of the extent and beauty of Sardinian production.

Mentre una volta ogni famiglia in Sardegna aveva il suo telaio orizzontale e produceva i suoi tessuti, oggi sono rimasti relativamente pochi tessitori che lavorano mantenendo vive le tecniche tradizionali.

A nord della città si trova l’imponente Museo unico regionale dell’Arte tessile sarda o Museo MURATS, che su due piani riesce a dimostrare in modo completo l’ampiezza e la bellezza della tessitura sarda. the opportunity to visit the fascinating exhibition “NARAMI: An Anthology of Sardinian Carpets”, which presented the work of forty different Sardinian production centres through more than seventy items from the ex-ISOLA collection.

An ambitious project!

The first hall in the exhibition housed the more recent designs, mostly from the 1980s and 90s, by famous artists and designers born in Sardinia, such as Maria Lai, Mauro Manca, Constantino Nivola, Ubaldo Badas and Eugenio Tavolara.

It was fascinating to see how these carpets represented a combination of Sardinian traditions and contemporary creativity. Two famous carpets by the artist Maria Lai displayed versions of her dynamic hand drawings in black and white,

Ho potuto così visitare l’impressionante mostra “NARAMI: Antologica del tappeto sardo”, che mirava a dimostrare il lavoro di quaranta diversi centri di produzione tessile dell’isola utilizzando oltre settanta reperti dell’ex collezione ISOLA. Un’impresa ambiziosa!

La prima sala della mostra ospitava i progetti più recenti, prevalentemente degli anni ‘80 e ‘90, progettati da noti artisti e creativi nati in Sardegna: come Maria Lai, Mauro Manca, Constantino Nivola, Ubaldo Badas ed Eugenio Tavolara. Mi interessava vedere come in questi tappeti tessuti e in pile, le tradizioni della tessitura sarda incontrassero sensibilità contemporanee.

Other amazing works included the flat fabrics

by Costantino Nivola, with a monochromatic composition and an extraordinarily energetic zig-zag pattern created in Tonara, as well as the rug by Francesco Biddoccu, with an intense floral and geometric pattern, created by Zeddiani in the 1980s. This room displayed how the Sardinian textile industry can be reanimated,making an important contribution to the contemporary design market. A wide range of more traditional textiles dominate the second room, which was also decorated with coloured threads woven around various areas of the space, giving visitors the impression that they were in a huge three-dimensional loom. Other items, such as small looms, and pieces representing the other Sardinian crafts, reinforced the idea that this was an exhibition that examined local artisanship.

While the collections at the MURATS Museum date back to the 18th and 20th centuries, “NARAMI” focused on later examples, and this room presented the diversity of visual forms of expression used throughout the island. There were many important aspects of weaving, such as the white on white “pibiones” designs (a technique specific to Sardinia) or intricate geometric patterns and models that were almost op-art. Examples of bedspreads and carpets were created in places such as Orune and 118

Altri tappeti sorprendenti includevano il tessuto piano di Costantino Nivola, con una composizione monocromatica e un motivo a zig zag straordinariamente energico realizzato a Tonara.

Poi il tappeto in pile di Francesco Biddoccu, con un motivo intenso sia floreale che geometrico, realizzato a Zeddiani negli anni ‘80. Questa sala ha dimostrato come l’industria tessile sarda possa rianimarsi e diventare una parte vitale del mercato del design contemporaneo.Una vasta gamma di tessuti più tradizionali ha dominato la seconda stanza, anch’essa decorata ad arte con fili colorati infilati in varie aree dello spazio, come per dare l’impressione che il visitatore si trovi all’interno di un gigantesco telaio tridimensionale.

Altri manufatti, come piccoli telai e altri mestieri sardi, aggiungono forza all’idea che si tratti di uno spettacolo incentrato sull’artigianato locale.

Mentre le collezioni del Museo MURATS risalgono al XVIII e XX secolo, “NARAMI” si è concentrato su esempi successivi e questa sala ha mostrato la diversità dei linguaggi visivi utilizzati in tutta l’isola. Ci sono stati molti punti salienti del tessuto, dai disegni “pibiones” bianchi su bianchi (una tecnica specifica della Sardegna) a intricati intrecci geometrici e modelli quasi optical-art. Esempi di coperte e tappeti sono stati creati in aree come

Other significant points in the gallery on the upper floor were the tapinu e ‘mortu (funeral carpets), with amazing designs and macabre yet fascinating stories, dating back to the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Used to hold the bodies of the dead during funeral vigils, these "kilim" patterns were kept by the same family for many years. There are twelve from Sardinia, all from the hillside town of Orgosolo, and five of these belong to MURATS. The fabrics all tell a story, and these, with their bold zig-zag patterns and symbolic designs, tell of the lives of unknown families, stirring emotions in the visitors. The MURATS Museum was founded to preserve, study and exhibit the textile patrimony of Sardinia, allowing future generations to understand the rich history of local textile production.

The museum also guarantees an opportunity for the creation of new projects based on ancient traditions, bringing the past, present and future of textile production together. ♦

Orune e Samugheo, tra cui un imponente tappeto realizzato a telaio con un design dell’arazzo sardo, con figure antropomorfe e zoomorfe raffigurate in colori vivaci contro un motivo geometrico nero su un fondo bianco . Ulteriori punti salienti nella galleria al piano superiore sono stati il tapinu e ‘mortu (tappeti funebri) con disegni sorprendenti e storie interessanti seppur macabre, risalenti alla fine del XVIII secolo e all’inizio del XIX secolo.

Utilizzati per trattenere il corpo dei morti durante una veglia, questi disegni "kilim" sono stati mantenuti nelle stesse famiglie per molti anni.

Dodici sono noti per essere esistenti in Sardegna, tutti provenienti dalla città collinare di Orgosolo, con cinque appartenenti a MURATS. I tessuti raccontano storie e, questi esempi, con i loro audaci schemi a zig zag e motivi simbolici, parlano della vita di famiglie sconosciute ed evocano una risposta emotiva da parte dello spettatore.

Il museo MURATS è stato fondato per preservare, studiare ed esibire il patrimonio tessile della Sardegna, in modo che le generazioni future possano comprendere la ricca storia della tessitura locale. Il museo garantisce inoltre che possano nascere nuovi progetti di antiche tradizioni in modo che passato, presente e futuro della tessitura si uniscano. ♦
