First Lufthansa direct flights scheduled for 2015 L ufthansa sent a letter to Panama’s Tourism Authority (ATP) in which it stated that as of January of next year, it will commence direct flights from Germany to Panama. According to the negotiations, the ATP will deliver $500 thousand a year to Lufthansa for frequent flights. The ATP has enacted this type of agreement with other carriers (AirFrance, Iberia, KLM) as a way of promoting a new route and to offset costs associated with the risk airlines face when opening up a new market. Sources have reported that Lufthansa plans on using Airbus A330 jets with a capacity for 300

passengers for the new route. The number of German tourists visiting the country has increased 20% compared to last year, representing 6, 474 travelers during the first trimester. Panama presently receives direct flights from Spain, France and Holland. Next in line to further Panama’s status as a transportation hub is, TAP, the Portuguese airline, which will begin routing flights to the country July 2. TAP will fly nonstop to Colombia and make a layover in Tocumen International Airport before returning to Europe.

ufthansa envió una carta a la Autoridad de Turismo de Panamá (ATP) en la que declaró que a partir de enero del próximo año se iniciará vuelos directos desde Alemania a Panamá. De acuerdo a las negociaciones, el ATP entregará $500.000 al año a Lufthansa por frecuencia de vuelo directo a Panamá. La ATP ha promulgado este tipo de acuerdos con otras compañías aéreas (AirFrance, Iberia, KLM) como una forma de promover nuevas ruta y para compensar los costos de las aerolíneas asociados con los riesgos que enfrentan a la hora de abrir un nuevo mercado. Fuentes han informado que Lufthansa planea utilizar aviones Airbus A330 con capacidad para 300 pasajeros para la nueva ruta. El número de turistas alemanes que visitan el país se ha incrementado un 20% en comparación al año anterior, lo que representa 6,474 viajeros durante el primer trimestre del año. n 2012 President Martinelli signed an Executive Decree naming 22 countries as being “friendly” with Panama, allowing their citizens to gain immediate permanent residency in the country. The “friendly” status allows individuals to sidestep the requirement of being a temporary resident for two years and leads to full citizenship in five years. Now the list has increased to include 50 Friendly Nations. Obtaining citizenship in Panama has become even easier for immigrants originating from one of these 50 nations. As put forth by Panama’s Immigration Office, citizens who qualify for a Friendly Nations Visa can now become a full Panamanian citizen through the purchase of real estate, leading to what may be one of the fastest full citizenship visa programs in the world. The requirements to qualify are simple. Obtain an offer to be employed by any Panamanian company (the Friendly Nation Visa will also fast track a Work

Permit) or start a Panamanian corporation that actually engages in business. Finally, a deposit of at least $5,000 USD must be made in a local bank. The spirit of this immigration law is to allow citizens of a friendly nation to easily obtain permanent residency so long as they can prove that they have economic ties with Panama. Now, the purchase of Panamanian real estate qualifies as a form of proof of economic ties, meaning that a friendly foreigner can invest in any type of Panamanian real estate with title in that person’s name to qualify. It is perfect for retirees or economically secure foreigners who do not have a job, nor wish to start a business. A small empty lot or an apartment will qualify for a real estate purchase, even if it is on cheaper-costing land located in the country’s interior. Panama immigration officials have stated that they expect at least a $10,000 USD investment if a real estate purchase is used to demonstrate economic ties with Panama.

The 50 Friendly Nations are: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Marino, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom (Great Britain & Northern Ireland), United States of America, and Uruguay. Since this visa is based on a Presidential Decree by a member of a political party that lost the election last month, it may be voided by the new president after taking office in July. Bottlenecks, Jack O

l’Jack is not a traffic engineer or an engineer of any kind for that matter, but I know that one does not enforce a crosswalk at the beginning of a highway. I was, in fact, an English major (talk about a useful major that brings in the big bucks after graduation) and even I understand that it is not a good idea to stop traffic trying to get onto a highway just so that pedestrians can cross the street. I believe that most people with any sense at all would not even consider building a highway that could only be accessed at one end, let alone require traffic be stopped by stern crossing guards before the cars could actually access its brand-new, three-lanes. However, that is exactly what is happening at the entrance to the new, very expensive, Martinelli-inspired project known as the Cinta Costera III. The traffic light right in front of the Fish Market that used to protect the entrance to Casco Viejo was taken down so that traffic could stream around

a circle and merge onto that big U-turn over the bay of Panama. Almost immediately after making the turn off of good ol’ Avenida Balboa, aka Cinta Contera I, most motorists are met by a traffic cop with an upraised palm facing oncoming. People of different shapes and sizes, walking, strolling or pushing hand trollies at various rates of speed can be seen crossing within the white lines of the crosswalk while rush-hour traffic backs up for blocks. Goodness knows that ol’Jack is not suggesting that the jammed cars run over the pedestrians, who are obviously hungry for some ceviche or maybe Friday supper. No, that would not be right. What would be correct would be an intelligent plan that takes into consideration that customers might still want to buy fish, while considering that at the same time, vehicles would not benefit from being randomly stopped every couple of minutes while trying to get somewhere. Hundreds of

cars are stopped so fewer than a dozen fish-fans can waddle across six lanes. The traffic cops don’t wait for a crowd to form either, but rather escort anybody who wants to cross in groups as small as two or three. Ol’Jack and several other cars were stopped recently for a solitary woman pulling a shopping cart. There is a pedestrian bridge on the other side. While it does not offer ready access, it also doesn’t rule out the need for an additional pedestrian bridge on the side leading to China Town. People have a right to buy fish, but citizens also have the right to expect a proper, safe and efficient design that allows traffic to flow. With an additional pedestrian bridge leading to the Fish Market, the only bottleneck that hassled motorists would have to deal with is at the other end, where the three lanes funnel into one to then squeeze across the Bridge of the Americas.

Whale watching begins!

aturday, May 24th was a perfect day for sailing. We were aboard the 37.5-ft Hunter “Liberty Bell” en route to Viveros Island. Viveros is accessible by ferry, about a half hour longer trip than when departing from the Trump Tower in Panama City for Saboga or Contadora Islands. All three are part of the Pearl Islands chain, a world-famous destination

for people visiting the country. To our surprise, we saw humpback whales between Mogo Mogo and Viveros Islands. For half an hour, we cruised with them, sighting their “footprints” several times along the way. These appear as large flat circles on the surface of the water indicating their progression and direction of movement. “The whales are about two

to three weeks early,” said Anne Gordon de Barrigon, owner of WhaleWatchingPanama.com. “The official whale season starts July 1st, but it’s normal for them to start to arriving around midJune.” De Barrigon is a biology major and former zookeeper who came to Panama as the animal trainer on the movie, “End of the Spear.” She is coauthor of the bestselling book, Dolphins & Whales Forever, and author of the forthcoming book, Listening with Your Heart. “The whales come to the warm waters of Panama to calve and to breed,” she explained. “They prefer shallow and warm waters to give birth. It would be a huge shock to the calf to go from body temperature into icy polar water. It’s also safer for them to breed in shallow waters than in open, deep water where there might be predators like orca whales, which are rarely sighted here. “Panama, and to a lesser extent Costa Rica, are the only places in the entire world where humpback whales migrate from both the Southern and the Northern Hemispheres,” said de Barrigon. “They come here for their respective winters. Right now it’s winter in Antarctica so we´ll have over 2,000 whales come in from the south. Panama is their destination and they flow over into Costa Rica as well. Soon you’ll see them every day.” According to de Barrigon, the humpback migration from Antarctica is the longest migration of any mammal known to man –over 6,000 miles. It is the only mammal migration that crosses the Equator. All in all, that was the best day we’ve had sailing in Panama; a lot to see, an interesting destination, good wind, and a sea alive with fish. l sábado 24 de mayo fue un día perfecto para la navegación. Era hermoso y soleado, con una agradable brisa constante y mares planos que ondulaba con bancos de peces. Estábamos a bordo de una nave de 37.5 pies, el Hunter “Liberty Bell” en camino a Isla Viveros. Viveros es accesible por ferry y demora media hora más para llegar que toma el viaje de la Ciudad de Panamá saliendo de la Torre Trump hacia las islas Saboga o Contadora. Los tres son parte de la cadena de las Islas de las Perlas, un destino mundialmente famoso para las personas que visitan al país. A nuestra sorpresa, vimos ballenas jorobadas entre Mogo Mogo e Islas Viveros. Por media hora navegamos con ellos, avistando sus “huellas” en varias ocasiones a lo largo del camino. Estos aparecen como círculos grandes y planas en la superficie del agua e indican la progresión del movimiento de la ballena. “Las ballenas han llegado dos a tres semanas antes de tiempo”, dijo Anne Gordon de Barrigón, propietaria de WhaleWatchingPanama.com. “La temporada oficial para el avistamiento de ballenas comienza el 1 de julio, pero es normal para que empiecen a llegar a mediados de junio.” De Barrigón es una bióloga y exguardiana de zoológico que vino a Panamá como una entrenadora de animales para la película “End of the Spear”. También es más seguro para su reproducirse estar en aguas menos profundas que en aguas abiertas y profundas donde puede haber depredadores como las orcas, que rara vez se divisan aquí. “Panamá, y en menor medida Costa Rica, son los únicos lugares en todo el mundo donde las ballenas jorobadas migran tanto desde los hemisferios sur y norte”, dijo de Barrigón. “Ellos vienen aquí por sus respectivos inviernos. Ahora es el invierno en la Antártida, así que tendremos más de 2.000 ballenas que vendrán desde el sur. Panamá es su destino. Llegarán hasta Costa Rica también. Pronto se verán todos los días”. Según de Barrigón, la migración de las ballenas jorobadas desde la Antártida es la migración más larga de cualquier mamífero conocido por el hombre. Recorre más de 6.000 kilómetros. Es la única migración mamífera que cruza el ecuador. Vimos a un tiburón a una media milla de la punta sur de la Isla Chapera cerca de un tiburón de 10 pies de largo. Navegando de regreso, pescamos dos jureles. Un poco después, algo que nunca logramos ver tomó nuestra línea arrancándolo con todo el gancho. Era el pez que se escapó. Con todo en cuenta, fue el mejor día que hemos tenido paseando en vela en Panamá. Hubo mucho que ver, un destino interesante, buen viento y un mar vivo con peces. Being a massage therapist, I first began exploring yoga as a means to manage and relieve chronic pain and as a tool for rehabilitation from injury. I became a serious yoga student in the year 2000, mostly practicing Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga. I began to feel the calming and healing effects of my practice seeping into my everyday life. In 2004 I taught my first class, Yoga is a system of practices that date back to pre-Vedic Indian traditions and aim at transforming the mind, body and spirit. The term derives from “yoking together” leading many to interpret “yoga” as that which unites the spiritual and physical aspects of one’s being. a “Stretch Everything Class” at the Kodiak Community College, with the focus on breath and movement to inspire a regular holistic self -maintenance program. In 2005 I continued my regular yoga practice in Santa Catalina, often practicing or guiding with friends. This eventually led to the construction of the “Bird’s Eye View” Yoga Studio and to furthering my study of yoga. In 2010 I attended a 200 hour yoga teacher training program at the Nosara Yoga Institute in Nosara, Costa Rica. Their interdisciplinary program transformed my gentle Hatha style of teaching into a more dynamic and eclectic flow. Just as yoga aids in flexibility it also teaches us to be more flexible in our lives and depending on who turns up for class, their experience level or yoga preference, my classes tend to range from beginner to intermediate and from relaxed, to warmer/ faster. eng shui is a Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing human existence through the surrounding environment. The practice is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics, classified as physiognomy (observation of appearances through formulas and calculations). Feng shui views architecture in metaphoric terms of “invisible forces” and has been shown to significantly improve health, increase energy levels and maintain a sense of wellbeing. You might not have the desire to start clearing clutter or undertake major furniture rearranging, but you might still employ some easy feng shui solutions to help you out. Here are some quick tips to help revive the body’s energy levels, and return to a fresh and vibrant state by using the theory of the Chinese five elements. • Thoroughly cleanse your

kitchen and remove any unhealthy foods. • Bring in live, fresh herbs like basil, rosemary or mint (Wood feng shui element), ideally in clay pots (Earth feng shui element), and find a good place for them in your kitchen. • Always have fresh water on site. A good idea is to place a row of spring water bottles (Water feng shui element) that you replenish as needed. • Place nine oranges (Fire feng shui element) in a round metal bowl (Metal feng shui element). Replenish them, too, as needed. • Be sure to aerate your kitchen often and let natural light in. hen they were discussing opening a restaurant, Ken Kress told his partner Yamilca Valdez that they ought to “open a burger joint because there just weren’t any good hamburgers available.” The result is California Burgers and Beer, immediately across the PanAmerican Highway from the Coronado Mall. This popular, informal and small restaurant offers what many of the locals along the beach claim are some of the best burgers in Panama. Kress, who was a surfer dude born and raised in California, claims that he does not have to import the beef, but rather knows how to season and cook it correctly and uses fresh –never frozen– Panamanian meat. He also has a fresh fish burger and a veggie

burger available. Customers “get to design their burgers themselves.” When each customer arrives, Valdez hands them an individual printed “BuildA-Burger” menu. Patrons circle what they want –either a half- or quarter-pound burger, California- or Caribbean-style (which is spicy, but not hot, with added peppers mixed in). Toppings are selected from a list that includes grilled or raw onions, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, mushrooms, jalapenos, pineapple, egg, pickles and bacon. The cheese choices include cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss and pepper Jack. The result is no two burgers alike. While “burgers” is in the name

of the place, they also offer fried or grilled chicken, lasagna and fresh corvina or snapper. There is also a selection of salads, from the regular mixed garden variety to Greek and chicken salad to their special “Don Juan,” their version of a chef’s salad. The sides are the standard bar food French fries, fried yuca, patacones or onion rings. They also serve tall glasses of natural juices, from lemonade and pineapple to more exotic papaya or guanabana. The beer is ice cold and reasonably priced. Even piling on the toppings, most customers will find that their homemade meal will cost little more than ten bucks. California Burgers and Beer is closed Tuesday and Wednesday during the rainy season with hours of 11 a.m. to around 9 p.m. from Thursday thru Monday. uando estaban discutiendo la apertura de su restaurante, Ken Kress le dijo a su compañera y socia Yamilca Valdez que deberían "abrir un restaurante de hamburguesas porque simplemente no había buenas hamburguesas disponibles". El resultado es California Burgers and Beer, ubicado inmediatamente al otro lado de la carretera Panamericana del Centro Comercial Coronado. Este popular restaurante informal y pequeño ofrece lo que muchos de los locales a lo largo de la playa dicen ser algunas de las mejores hamburguesas de Panamá. Kress, que era un surfista nacido y criado en California, afirma que no tiene que importar la carne, sino más bien sabe guisar y cocinarlo correctamente. Utiliza carne panameño fresco, nunca congelado. También tiene disponible una hamburguesa de pescado fresco y una hamburguesa vegetariana. Sus clientes pueden "diseñar sus hamburguesas por sí mismos". Cuando llegan, Valdez les entrega a un menú "Build-A-Burger" (arma su hamburguesa). El patrón hambriento circula sus preferencias –una hamburguesa de media o un cuarto de libra al estilo “California” o estilo “Caribe”, la cual trae ají no picante mezclado adentro. Entonces se escoge lo que desean añadir de una lista que incluye cebollas a

California Burgers and Beer. la parrilla o crudas, lechuga, tomate, guacamole, champiñones, jalapeños, piña, huevo, pepinillos y tocino. Las opciones de queso incluyen cheddar, mozzarella, suizo y Pepper Jack. El resultado: no hay dos hamburguesas iguales. Mientras que “burgers” (hamburguesas) forma parte del nombre del local, también se ofrece pollo frito o a la plancha, lasaña y corvina o pargo fresco. También hay una selección de ensaladas, desde una versión regular hasta ensalada griega, de pollo y el "Don Juan", su versión de una ensalada de chef. Los acompañantes son los típicos de comida de bar: papas o yuca frita, patacones y aros de cebolla.

También se sirve jugos naturales, desde limonada y piña hasta jugos más exóticos como papaya o guanábana. La cerveza es fría como el hielo y a un precio razonable. Aunque uno amontona los ingredientes, la mayoría de los clientes encontrarán que para una comida completa hecha en casa, costará poco más de diez dólares. California Burgers and Beer está cerrado los martes y miércoles durante la temporada de lluvias y cuenta con un horario de 11 a.m. hasta por alrededor de las 9 p.m. de jueves a lunes. hile the official Burger Week celebrations are taking place in City restaurants, our readers have answered our call to let us know about their favorite burger joints. The Visitor shares our findings. Ponchalos in Las Tablas (Facebook.com/Ponchalos) surprised us with their loyal following. In a town of only 9000, they have managed to generate the support of 13,000 followers through their Facebook page. Their most popular plate? The “Ponchalos dobles,” a double patty burger that weighs in with a whopping 1 lb. of meat. The Balboa Yacht Club (Facebook.com/BalboaYachtClubPTY) in Amador did not disappoint with their down-home comfort food at the mouth of Canal. An assortment of fresh meat burgers are grilled to perfection, juicy, hearty, and great with a beer. Another contender comes from an unlikely source: Popeye’s Chicken (Facebook.com/ PopeyesPanama). Known for their Louisiana-style fried chicken, they also serve delicious chicken burgers, both in original and spicy flavors, either choice perfect with their Cajun fries. The undisputed winner of our informal poll (drum roll, please) is the burger from XS Memories. (Facebook.com/XSMemories. DennisSheila) located in Santa Clara. Proprietor Sheila has a dedicated customer base who turned out in droves to show their support for her hospitality and

most excellent burger. The Visitor would like to thank all those who took part in our informal (and hopefully, fun) poll. Be

Al disfrutar de su maravilloso vistazo hacia el mar, se puede deleitar con su rico surtido de hamburguesas de carne fresca a la parrilla. Son cocidos a la perfección, jugosos y muy bien acompañados con una cerveza.

Otro contendiente fue un poco inesperado: Popeyes (Facebook.com/ PopeyesPanama). Conocido por su pollo frito al estilo Louisiana, también sirven deliciosas hamburguesas de pollo, tanto en sabor original y picante, que van perfectamente con sus papas cajún. El ganador indiscutible de nuestra encuesta fue (redoble de tambores) la hamburguesa de XS Memories (Facebook.com/XSMemories.DennisSheila) en Santa Clara. La propietaria Sheila tiene seguidores por todo Panama y los Estado Unidos. Su clientela salió en masa para mostrar su apoyo a su hospitalidad y excelentes hamburguesas. Airport fuel supplier tapped

The Cabinet authorized the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) to give the company Vertikal Corporation, Inc. a 20-year contract to receive and store crude oil and make derivatives on just over four acres of land located near the Tocumen International Airport. This was announced in a press release from the Presidency of the Republic which detailed that the concession area, located 8.5 kilometers from the coast, has a capacity to store 12 million gallons of fuel and will supply the country's main airport.

North Koreans on trial

A preliminary hearing for the captain and two crew members of the North Korean ship “Chong Chon Gang,” captured in Panama in July for trafficking undeclared war material, is taking place in the Third Judicial Circuit Court of Colón. The accused are the captain, Ri Yong Il, first officer, Hong Yong Hyon and political officer, Kim Yong Gol for the alleged commission of an offense against collective security.

The per capita consumption of

milk recommended by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is 150 liters average. The only countries in the region that reach this level are Costa Rica, Argentina and Uruguay. Ariel Londinsky, head of the Pan-American Dairy Federation (FEPALE) agreed that Latin America does not have the average consumption of milk recommended by the international body.

To ensure that buyers of fuel across the country are getting a fair shake, the Authority for Consumer Protection and Defense of Competition (ACODECO) conducted an investigation of gas stations. Technicians from ACODECO’s Department of Legal Metrology checked to ensure the various gasoline and diesel suppliers

were within the limits permitted by the regulations.

The fight against money laundering

Panamanian and U.S. authorities at a conference in the province of Coclé are analyzing the extent to which Panama’s economic strengths are a magnet for illicit capital and money laundering. The event’s main exhibitor is Kenneth White, assistant attorney general of the US Justice Department and Jenifer Fowler, of the Office of Terrorist Financing, of the US Treasury Department.

The cost of power irregularities

In recent months there have been abnormalities in the energy sector in all power distribution com-

panies servicing the country. As a result, these companies now require reimbursements by the state. Ensa, which covers the eastern part of the capital city area (Colón, Darién and the district of Guna Yala), said that the April accumulated overruns cost $22.9 million in buying power and is expected that by June it will increase to $41.7 million.

Rescue teams still unfruitful

The Dutch and Costa Rican Red Cross rescuers completed their search for the two young women who went missing in Boquete, Chiriqui on April 2. At a meeting, search party members said that they did not find any clues to the whereabouts of the two girls, Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon. The seach group consisted of 12 rescue dogs, their guides from the Netherlands and the agents of the National Police Force. For the specialist team and their hounds, the search has ended and they will soon be traveling back to their country of origin.

Hotels set sights on Colón

Big hotel brands are betting on the Panamanian Caribbean as an area of continued growth for the tourism sector. The construction of a new road connecting the towns of Cuango and Santa Isabel in the Costa Arriba region of Colón has piqued the hotel chains’ interest. It is expected that once the land bridge is constructed, 1000 new hotel rooms will open in the area. The Decameron chain has been the first to show interest in building a hotel , bringing with them the first 600 rooms in Santa Isabel.

WiFi for all in Panama

The National Internet Network (RNI), the company behind the "Internet for All" program, made an investment of $32 million thus far and has 1,157 hotspots nationwide. The National Authority for Government Innovation (AIG) reported that Panama is the first country in the world to offer free WiFi internet and states that the aim of their project is to bring wireless internet connectivity throughout the country in order to include participation from citizens in the use of information technologies for their personal development and for the benefit of society in general.

as inspiradoras, interesantes y modernas charlas organizadas por la agrupación internacional TED han llegado a Panamá para compartir y llevar más conocimiento al público. Promoviendo la Tecnología, el Entretenimiento y el Diseño, TED se estableció inicialmente como una conferencia anual en Silicon Valley, California, emprendido por los expertos en tecnología que trabajaban en el área. Poco a poco el movimiento fue creciendo, y motivado por el lema de “ideas dignas de difundir” se crearon las charlas

TEDx, las cuales permitían que bajo el mismo formato se llevaran a cabo eventos independientes de TED a nivel internacional, haciendo que más personas se sumaran a esta “conversación global”. Hoy en día hay casi 2000 charlas de TED en Youtube, vistas por docenas de millones de personas alrededor del mundo, y abarcando temas de todo tipo. Panamá es un lugar efervescente, constantemente lleno de múltiples iniciativas y proyectos que sustentan su imparable crecimiento económico y social.

Si a esto se le suma la “apertura radical” que la organización TED promueve, no sorprende que localmente existan dos eventos independientes de TEDx, TEDxPanamaCity y TEDxPuntaPaitilla. TEDxPanamaCity arrancó en 2011, haciendo eventos anuales en los cuales han hablado desde una ex primera dama hasta un antropólogo, una sexóloga y emprendedores. TEDxPuntaPaitilla comenzó el año pasado, y entre sus expositores ha tenido a pintores, investigadores, publicistas y empresarios (en 2012 se llevó a cabo TEDxBellaVista, pero no ha continuado). Al ser independientes, ambos eventos no compiten y de hecho solo benefician al público interesado con más opciones de charlas sobre más temas.
