Boquete bound
Chiriquí highland fair draws in big crowds T
he tradition began in 1950, with the first Flower and Coffee Fair in Boquete, the mountain town with springlike climes in the Chiriquí province. Today, the number of visitors that will be drawn to the fairgrounds from January 12 to 22 is in excess of 100,000 people. “Boqueteños” have worked hard to set up the always-impressive flower gardens, arranged in bright symmetrical patterns. The setting is perfect for a sunny stroll alongside the Caldera River. Roses, geraniums, chrysanthemums and marigolds are just some of the flowers on grand display. Or-
chids are also a special sight to see. The variety seems endless. Coffee tastings are the other prominent feature. And the true essence of the fair is enjoying the outdoors and the sun. The fair also marks the beginning of the sunny, dry “verano” season in Panama and begin of the country fair season. A daily program includes live entertainment, music, dancing, crafts, diverse dining options and rides for children. Throughout the town, at virtually all of the establishments that could be of interest to persons on holiday, the festive spirit can be
felt. Restaurants pull out all the stops to impress diners and tour companies are ready to exceed the expectations of those seeking a new experience - be it an adventurous zip line or a relaxing birder’s tour. The fair is a great place to pick up unique and original souvenirs. Local and foreign artisans will have their works on display. Traditional Panamanian arts and crafts compete for buyers alongside works brought by craftsmen from Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.
The main attraction at the fair are these impressive flower gardens. But the spirit of the event lies in the celebration of the arrival of “verano,” Panama’s dry sunny season and the enjoyment of the great outdoors. La feria también marca el comienzo de la soleada y seca estación “verano” en Panamá, así como da el pistoletazo de salida a las ferias de todo el país. Un programa diario incluye espectáculos en vivo, música, baile, artesanías, restaurantes y diversas opciones de paseos para los niños. The recognition stems from fame surrounding award-winning varieties like Giesha which sells for over $100 per pound in Japan and a “Panama Boquete” branding effort carried out by the Seattle-based coffee giant Starbucks, which sports colorful posters promoting coffee from Boquete in its shoppes.

Coronado growth continues! By playacommunity.com ith two new malls open and working on filling up floor space, and three new plazas close to completion, the Coronado area is going to keep growing for months to come.

Coronado Mall
First on the scene was the Coronado Mall. Home of the first (and still only) McDonalds location at the beaches. Another first in the area is Yogen Fruz, a Canadian frozen yogurt franchise serving tasty and healthy treats at a price point everyone can afford. With several area stores opening in the area and closing within months, we expect to see Yogen Fruz go the distance. There are several new businesses working on locations behind screened windows, at Coronado Mall. Mia Nonna, a stone oven pizza joint is one we are looking forward to sample. A year and a half ago, the only pizza you could find in Coronado was one you made at home. Now we have pizzerias competing for the honor of Playacommunity.Com’s Best Pizza at the beach award! Another slots casino will soon be opening its doors in the Coronado Mall, too. Also soon to be coming to the mall is Dulce Idea, and Optima, a business center. Recently opened is a new clothing store. Rumor tells us, that a Safety
price and product competition for grocery stores and drug stores in the area. At the Village Mall, facing the street, signs have gone up for Leonardo’s Steak House. It looks like it is going to be a sit-down restaurant. The quality of the stone finishing suggests high prices and better service. Across the street from Coronado Mall, the Novey home improvement store is opening, making living at the beach much more convenient. Since the beginning of construction of this mall, Felipe Motta Wine Store (which also sells liquors) has proudly displayed a banner announcing their intention to do business at the beaches. This means that the quality level at BBQs and parties is about to be upped!

The Village
The opening of Matchetazo at the Village, sent ripples of excitement coursing through the full time resident community around the beach areas. This meant fewer trips to the city, and more

The inside scoop tells us that this is a personal passion project of Susana Cheng herself, who is bringing some “first in Panama” weight loss technology to the area. Located on the InterAmerican highway, across from The Village and next to El Rey, Bayside Center is the pride of Coronado’s darling Susana Cheng, best known for being the owner of HIM Home Improvements and More, the first hardware store in the area. El primero en aparecer fue el Coronado Mall, con el primer MacDonalds en la playa. Otra cadena situada en su espacio es Yogen Fruz, un yogur helado canadiense con condimentos sanos para todos los bolsillos. Con tiendas abriendo y cerrando en poco tiempo, es de esperar que Yogen Fruz se mantenga. Hay nuevos negocios a punto de aparecer, en los que se sigue trabajando tras veladas ventanas, en el Coronado Mall. Mia Nonna, un restaurante de pizzas con horno de piedra es uno de ellos. La apertura de Machetazo en The Village, hizo correr ondas de emoción entre la comunidad residente en las zonas de playa. En el centro comercial The Village, dando a la InterAmericana, los signos del aumento de la afluencia se han incrementado en el Steak House de Leonardo. Esto parece que va a ser un res-
taurante de comer sentado. La calidad de los acabados de piedra sugiere que los precios son altos y el servicio se antoja superior. Penonomé & La Pintada
History behind interior destinations By Howard Walker here are many attractions for the tourist in Panama in addition to the popular holiday resorts proliferating along the shores of the Pacific. The ‘interior’ has much to offer away from the beaches, often within easy reach. All the provinces have their distinctive characteristics, in their geography, history or lifestyles which makes travel throughout Panama so interesting. Recently we were in Penonome, home of the ‘sombrero pintao’ the celebrated ‘Panama Hat’ , woven baskets and other vegetable fibre products, also Penomone is famous for its aquatic carnival. It is a busy, historic city and the capital of the province of Cocle, population close to 20,000 inhabitants. Its backdrop is the majestic Central Cordillera which lines a vast green pastoral plain of productive farmland, orchards, cattle ranches, and rice, and sugar plantations. After turning off from the Panmerican Highway, a bustling main street lined with open bazaartype stores (a reflection of its multi-cultural origins) leads to the cathedral of San Juan Bautista and government offices. Penonome happens to be in the geographic centre of the country and a monument marking this was erected 1981 upon the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city. Penonome owes its name to Nome, a leader in the native resistance against the conquistadors

The Plaza in La Pintada. La Plaza en La Pintada. who was captured and executed: ‘Aqui peno Nome’ – ‘Here suffered Nome.’ The several landscaped city squares are notable for their statuary Simon Bolivar is dominant in the Parque de Immaculada, a cincuacentennial gift from Venezuela in 1953. Local hero General Victoriano Lorenzo has his place along with others in the Parque de los Hombres Illustres. A “Cholo” peasant of humble birth, the famed guerilla leader attained the rank of general for his military successes in the 1000 Days War, among them being possession of Penonome for several days in 1901 after defeating the city’s occupying Colombian forces. He was tricked into captivity and executed shortly before the end of
the war in 1903. In contrast to Lorenzo’s bust is the large and imposing statue dedicated to “La Madre de Panama”, infant peacefully cradled in her arms. Penonome’s small museum is located in Barrio San Antonio which is the city’s historic area dating from XV11 century. It is next to another park, once again with statuary and mounted busts, this time in homage to Queen Isobela and Christopher Columbus. Penonome is a great jumpingoff ground for visits further into the interior. A 15 minute scenic country drive takes us to picturesque La Pintada, surely the quintessential Panamanian rural village setting. Continued on page 24.

E
l turista encuentra muchas atracciones en Panamá, además de los populares resorts de vacaciones proliferando a lo largo de la costa del Pacífico. El “interior” tiene mucho que ofrecer lejos de las playas, a menudo sin tener que alejarse mucho. Todas las provincias tienen características distintivas en su geografía, historia o estilos de vida, que hacen el viaje a Panamá mucho más interesante. Recientemente estuvimos en Penonomé, casa del “sombrero pintao”, el famoso “Panama Hat”, cestas tejidas y otros productos de fibra vegetal, así como su famoso carnaval acuático. La capital de Coclé es una ciudad histórica con mucho trasiego de personas. Su población tiene cerca de 20,000 habitantes. El telón de fondo es su majestuosa Cordillera Central, que traza una vasta y verde llanura para el pastoreo con productivas granjas, huertos, fincas de ganado, y arroz y plantaciones de azúcar. Después de tomar la salida de la Autopista Panamericana, una bulliciosa calle principal con bazares y tiendas por el estilo (un reflejo de su originaria multiculturalidad) lleva a la Catedral de San Juan Bautista y las oficinas gubernamentales. Penonomé está en el centro greográfico del país, como refleja un monumento que fue erigido en 1981, coincidiendo con el
300º aniversario de la ciudad. Penonomé le debe su nombre a Nome, un líder en la resistencia nativa contra los conquistadores que fue capturado y ejecutado. Las varias plazas que conforman el paisaje urbano de Penonomé tienen esculturas notables. Simón Bolívar domina en Parque Inmaculada, un regalo de Venezuela del año 1953. El héroe local, el general Victoriano Lorenzo, está representado junto a otras personalidades en el Parque de los Hombres Ilustres. Un humilde “cholo” campesino y famoso líder de la guerrilla que logró el rango de general por su éxito militar en la guerra de los 1,000 días, durante la que ostentó el poder en Penonomé por algunos días en 1901, después de haber derrotado a las fuerzas de ocupación colombianas. Fue capturado y ejecutado antes del final de la guerra en 1903. En contraste, el busto de Lorenzo es una alta e imponente estatua dedicada a “La Madre de Panamá”, con un infante acunado entre sus brazos. El pequeño museo de Penonomé está en el barrio de San Antonio, área histórica de la ciudad con una antigüedad que se remonta al siglo XVII. Está al lado de un parque, una vez más con estatuas y bustos montada en homenaje a la Reina Isabela y Cristóbal Colón. Penonomé es un fantástico punto de partida para visitas más profundas al interior. Un pintoresco trayecto en coche de quince minutos por el campo nos lleva
hasta La Pintada, seguramente la quintaesencia del Panamá rural que puede encontrarse en una villa. Comprensi-
blemente, muchas están decoradas con los famosos petroglifos. No se pierdan un paseo por el ventoso río donde los rápidos han esculpido formas lisas y redondeadas a lo largo de las piedras que sobresalen de sus aguas; cuencas y pilas naturales, blanqueadas por el sol y desgastadas por los siglos. Después de dejar la iglesia en su plaza central hay tiempo para comer, encarando, sin ir más lejos, el restaurante Casa Vieja La Pintada. Contruída con ladrillos cálidos y coloreados y con tejas de arcilla en el techo, su cómodo salón
comedor y bar van decorados al unísono con esculturadas talladas de madera, entre otros detalles. El menú es muy variado... Después de la comida el lugar se presta a descansar en su temático rancho con hamacas. Según la leyenda local, La Villa de La Pintada tomó su nombre de una antigua tienda que fue pintada de varios colores. Los clientes la llamaron la Casa Pintada, luego La Pintada y, en algún momento, ese nombre se aplicó a la especial comunidad que se se extendió alrededor.

The investment agreement for Korea’s State-owned mining group to buy 20% of the copper mine to be developed by Canada’s Inmet Mining in Colon violates the Constitution, warned the National Bar Association and environmental groups. The warning is based on Article 3 of the Constitution. It states that “the country will never assign, transfer or dispose of, either temporarily or partially, its assets to other states.”

Presidential statements cause discomfort

Meeting of the millers
The millers of the country gathered this week in Santiago with officials from the Institute of Agricultural Marketing (IMA) to discuss availability of rice and set the quantity to be imported to supply the local market during 2012. The country annually consume 7.5 million quintals of grain, but this year the yields are less than 100 quintals per hectare, which would indicate that the harvest will be 5.6 million bushels, an amount sufficient to supply the local consumption.

In a brief dispatch from the Secretary of State Communications it was reported that Foreign Minister Roberto Henriquez would lead the Panamanian delegation to travel to Nicaragua.

Betting business grows
The basic family food basket rose in November to $300.83, a cost never before reached, says the report of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF). The basic family food basket is used as a barometer for the cost of basic living in Panama.

New York Times ranks Panama as #1 destination By Jacob Ehrler
anama cannot ask for anything more. The new year brought a welcome surprise when the country was ranked first in a Travel Section piece called “The 45 Places to Go in 2012” in The New York Times by Freda Moon. Appealing to travelers who could be seeking refuge in the current global economic storm, the first two of four paragraphs were dedicated to the conditions that justify declaring Panama’s economy to be “booming:” Expats and investors who “banked” on real estate, a steady stream of immigrants, construction, the “recent passage of the United States-Panama free trade agreement” and the expansion of the Canal. In the third paragraph, the author dropped big names: The Panamera (Waldorf Astoria’s first Latin American hotel), Trump Ocean Club (the Trump brand’s first project off US soil) and Frank Gehry (the architect whose name is on the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain). Gehry designed the BioMuseo, scheduled to open at the Pacific entrance to the Canal in early 2013. Dedicated to natural history with numerous interactive exhibits, one of the lessons that will be imparted at this architectural gem is how the emergence of the isthmus created climate changes that guided the evolution of modern man, proposing the conclusion that the entire human race is in fact Panamanian. It is possible that the museum could surpass the Canal in numbers of visitors before the end of the decade. Yes, Trump’s Panama tower is the tallest, largest and most expensive building in Latin America and the new heights of luxury service that it offers may only ever be challenged by those of The Panamera - Panama’s chic consumers will make capable judges - but what holds Panama for the mortal traveler? In a nice finish, The New York

Times article gave a big plug to Bocas del Toro, a Caribbean banana province that’s become a must-do among adventurous for its “snorkeling and zip lining by day and raucous night life after dark.” But the article could not have left out Panama’s budding diamond in the rough, its Old Town. Dubbed “famous” in the article, Casco Viejo was praised for being a “trendy” and “stylish” Unesco World Heritage site. The article called this area “transformed”, touting the arts, restaurants and boutique hotels, withholding names to entice travelers to explore the options for themselves. Two more Latin destinations were also included in the top ten: Chilean Patagonia and Havana,
Cuba. And that’s not all… When it rains, it pours - and the international press just can’t seem to get its fill of Panama. In addition to the monumental coverage in The New York Times, our burgeoning tourism destination was featured as a top ten dining destination in the Spanish version of TripAdvisor.com. A 24-page special supplement on Panama in the current edition of the Spanish travel magazine Excelencias proclaims that “Panamá está de moda” - Panama is in fashion. Panamanian “devils” in the Miami Herald On December 31, 2011, the lead story of The Miami Herald International Edition was dedicated to the passing of Panama City’s colorful and noisy Diablo Rojo busses in a piece called “Re-
nouncing the Devil.” It featured what leaving behind Panama’s graffiti-donning “devil” busses for a modern transit means for the country’s economy as well as the cultural implications of no longer having the likenesses of “heroes and outlaws” painted on the backs of busses. It’s long been the gritty charm of Panama that has attracted so many people. Where else could one spot a portrait of Osama bin Laden barreling dangerously through traffic on the back of a retired Florida school bus? The return of “Tony” Panama made headlines on December 11, too when former strongman Manuel Antonio “Tony” Noriega was finally extradited from Paris to Panama where he is serving his sentence in a prison in the former Panama Canal Zone. His arrival was a peaceful reminder of all that has changed since he was removed from power by US forces in 1989. But alas, there were other former “chiefs” of Panama who made a much bigger impression on the media. “Golden” culture featured in National Geographic The January edition of National Geographic featured a story (on the cover in the Spanish edition) that has been six years in the making, the discovery of the most recent burial site for chiefs and high-ranking members of pre-

Colombian society at El Caño. Smithsonian archeologist Julia Mayo’s dig in central Panama, said the magazine, could lead to a new era of discover and understanding. There is still much to be learned from this area, where mummified chiefs adorned with gold were found buried face down, adjacent to their families and slaves who were slain in sacrifice to accompany these lords to the next world. Panama, according to National Geographic, may well hold the answers that will help the archeological community find answers to the mysteries that surround the gold-worshiping post-Mayan society that occupied lands ranging from Costa Rica to Colombia. It seems that Panama is where its most prominent members came to find their final resting place. Breaking records, making impressions Panama’s allure is strong. Just before the end of the year, on December 23, the country counted it two millionth tourist arrival. The excitement in the air is tangible for favorable times ahead in the tourism sector. As more and more people discover all that this little isthmus has to offer, they, just like the press, will pass on their recommendation: that it’s worth a visit to discover Panama.

El año nuevo trajo una grata sorpresa cuando el país ocupó el primer lugar en una pieza de sección de viajes llamada “Los 45 lugares para visitar en 2012” en el New York Times, por Freda Luna. Atractivo para los viajeros que podrían estar buscando refugio en la actual tormenta económica mundial, dos de los primeros cuatro párrafos estaban dedicados a las condiciones que justifican la declaración de la economía de Panamá como “en pleno auge:” Los expatriados y los inversores que invirtieron en bienes raíces, un constante flujo de inmigrantes, la construcción, la “reciente aprobación del acuerdo de libre comercio entre los Estados Unidos-Panamá”, y la ampliación del Canal. En el tercer párrafo, la autora utilizó grandes nombres: El Panamera (primer Hotel Waldorf Astoria de Latinoamérica), Trump Ocean Club (el primer proyecto de la marca Trump fuera del suelo de EE.UU.), y Frank Gehry (el arquitecto cuyo nombre se encuentra en el Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, España). El artículo denomina el área “transformada”, haciendo alarde de las

Además de la cobertura monumental en el New York Times, nuestro destino turístico floreciente fue presentado como un destino gastronómico de los diez primeros en la versión en español de TripAdvisor.com. Un suplemento especial de 24 páginas sobre Panamá en la actual edición de la revista de viajes española Excelencias, proclama que “Panamá está de moda”. Los diablos de Panamá en el Miami Herald El 31 de diciembre de 2011, la historia principal de la edición internacional de The Miami Herald se dedicó al inminente paso a mejor vida de los coloridos y ruidosos autobuses Diablos Rojo de Ciudad de Panamá, en una pieza llamada “La renuncia al diablo.” Destacó cómo se dejaran de lado los viejos autobuses grafteados en beneficio de autobuses de tránsito modernos, y lo que ello significa para el desarrollo del país, así como las implicaciones culturales de no tener las semejanzas de los “héroes y bandidos” pintados en la parte trasera de los autobuses. Por mucho tiempo el encanto de este medio de transporte panameña ha atraído a mucha gente. ¿Dónde más se podría detectar un retrato de Osama bin Laden disparando peligrosamente a través del tráfico en la parte trasera de un antiguo autobús escolar de la Florida? El regreso de “Tony” Panamá también fue noticia el 11 de diciembre, cuando el ex hombre fuerte Manuel Antonio “Tony” Noriega fue extraditado finalmente de París a Panamá, donde cumple su condena en una prisión en la antigua Zona del Canal de Panamá. Su llegada fue un recordatorio de paz y de cuánto ha cambiado desde que fue derrocado por las fuerzas de EE.UU. en 1989. La arqueóloga del Smithsonian Julia Mayo, responsable de la excavación en el centro de Panamá, dijo a la revista que podría conducir a una nueva era de descubrimiento y comprensión. Todavía hay mucho que aprender de esta zona, donde los jefes momificados adornados de oro se encontraron con las caras hundidas hacia abajo, junto a sus familias y esclavos que fueron asesinados en un sacrificio para acompañar a estos señores al otro mundo. $3.5 billion development budget
The Government has planned investments for this year of some $3.5 billion on projects throughout the country, for which $3.8 billion are budgeted, said the Ministry of
Economy and Finance (MEF). Of the total budget, $580 million is for new works and the rest to give continuity to the projects under development, the statement said.

This year the government will invest more than $50 million in districts in the Guna Yala [formerly Kuna], Ngabe-Bugle and Emberá indigenous regions on development and repair of infrastructure and other projects, it was reported by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).

ince 1960 Panama offers international investors the opportunity to obtain residency, citizenship and a Panama passport by making investments. This is called the Panama Self Economic Solvency Visa and it offers three different investment options to qualify for Panama residency. Option #1 Invest a minimum of $300,000 USD in a three year time deposit (or “certificate of deposit” or “CD”) at any Panama bank. Conditions: (1) The Panama bank time deposit (CD) account must be in the personal name of the primary applicant (it may not be in the name of a Panama corporation, Panama foundation, or trust). The interest earned from the Panama bank time deposit (CD), will be deposited monthly into any savings account at the Panama bank that is designated (the Panama savings account may be a personal account, or a corporate account). The interest income is not taxed by the Panamanian government, nor is it subject to any tax reporting requirements in Panama. Option # 2 Invest a minimum of $300,000
USD in titled Panama real property. This must be equity, as mortgages will not count. Conditions: (1) The titled Panama real property can either be in the personal name of the primary applicant or in the name of a Panama Private Interest Foundation; as long as the primary applicant is either the Founder or a Beneficiary (it may not be in the name of a Panama corporation or trust). (2) The primary applicant must also prove that he or she has sufficient income to support him or herself. Option # 3 The third option is a combination of a 3-year Panama bank CD with Panama real estate purchases equity (excluding mortgages) with both totaling a minimum of $300,000. All three options requires for each additional dependent that applies for residency, the primary applicant must prove that he or she has sufficient income to support the general costs of living of each dependent. (2) El solicitante principal debe probar que él o ella tienen ingresos suficientes para mantenerse a sí mismos. 3ª Opción La tercera opción es un combinación de un depósito bancario con compra estatal de bienes raíces en Panamá (exclu-
yendo hipotecas), con un total mínimo de $300,000. Las tres opciones requieren para cada aplicante adicional para la residencia, que el solicitante principal pruebe que él o ella tienen ingresos suficientes para sostener los gastos generales de vida de cada dependiente. Además, si el extranjero tiene dependientes, el solicitante tiene que invertir un adicional de $2,000 por cada dependiente. Otros países tienen visas de inversionista, pero la mayoría requieren un mínimo de $1 millón de inversión. or the ninth consecutive year, jazz takes over the city in January with the Panama Jazz Festival. Celebrated this year from Monday, January 16 to Saturday, January 21, the "Jazz Fest" enters once again with the new year, this time under the slogan "Del Corazón de América para el Mundo (From the Heart of America for the World). Created by renowned Panamanian musician Danilo Perez, the festival attracts international talent come perform in Panama. Combining the promise of fun in the sun with the fact that the artistes now have time intheir busy schedules to make international appearances, the Panama Jazz Festival also parlays music education into its cultural mission. Young musical talents from Panama have the unique opportunity to hone in on their talents during workshops presented by the greats of today's jazz scene. The week-long concert roster is for all to enjoy.
Big closing concert The biggest event of the festival is on the closing day, Saturday, January 21. Traffic is banned from
Casco Viejo and music takes over the scenic Old Quarter. Shuttle service is provided from the Cinta Costera and entrance is free. Throngs of 'culture cats' wind through the picturesque streets enjoying the festive atmosphere, with music pulsating from the main stage on Plaza Catedral. Local businesses fill to the brim and shaded tables in the quaint plazas become prime spots for the day.
"Salsa Meets Jazz" The big concert at Plaza Catedral is customarily the culmination of "Jazz Fest," but this year organizers have added on another attraction - one that fuses salsa in with the jazz - as the last event on the program. At 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21 at Club Latitude 47 in the Calle Uruguay nightlife district, Adalberto Santiago and the Nando Lopez Big Band will fuse two musical styles in a presentation called "Salsa Meets Jazz." It is as if Panama's music lovers will be released slowly from an intense week of jazz, back to the day-to-day musical offering. Tickets for all the concerts are on sale at Blockbuster and at the door.

or novena año consecutive, el jazz se adueña de la ciudad con el Festival de Jazz de Panamá. Este año el festival se celebra de lunes 16 a sábado 21 de enero, con el lema: “Del Corazón de América para el Mundo”. Creado por el renovado músico panameño Danilo Pérez, el festival atrae talentos internacionales que vienen a tocar a Panamá. Combinando la promesa de pasarlo bien bajo el son con la certeza de que en estas fechas son muchos los grandes artistas tienen un preciado hueco en su apretada agenda, el Festival de Jazz de Panamá también promueve la educación musical dentro de su mission cultural. Jóvenes talentos musicales de Panamá tienen una oportunidad única de mejorar su destreza durante los talleres a cargo de los algunos de los grandes talentos de la actual escena jazz. La gran lista de conciertos es para que la disfruten todos.

El mayor evento del festival está programado para el día de cierre, el sábado 21 de enero. El tráfico será cortado en el Casco Viejo y la música se hará cargo del escénica parte antigua de la ciudad. Servicios de lanzaderas especiales transportarán al público desde la Cinta Costera y

A las 10:00 p.m. del sábado 21 de enero, en el Club Latitud 47 en calle Uruguay, en pleno distrito de ocio nocturno, Adalberto Santiafo y la gran banda de Nando López fusionarán dos estilo musicales en una presentación llamada “La salsa se encuentra con el jazz.” Es como si los amantes de la música en Panamá fueran conducidos en una regresión musical desde una intensa semana de jazz a la característica salsa que anima casi a diario las noches panameñas. rammy-nominated Panamanian pianist and composer Danilo Pérez founded the Panama Jazz Festival. Danilo’s distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz (covering the music of the Americas, folkloric and world music) has garnered him critical acclaim and loyal audiences. Born in Panama in 1966, Danilo started his musical studies at just three years of age with his father, a band leader and singer. By age 10, he was studying the European classical piano repertoire at the National Conservatory in Panama.

Bringing back Panama Canal transits: Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas has announced four transits itineraries for 2012 and 2013. Devolviendo el tránsito al Canal de Panamá: El Vision of the Sea de Royal Caribbean ha anunciado cuatro itinerarios de tránsito para 2012 y 2013.

It will be the Vision of the Seas’ first Panama Canal transit since 2009. This is a big increase in the Panama Canal transits. Royal Caribbean's Radiance of the Seas completed just one trans-canal sailing in 2011 and 2010.
The Vision of the Seas will offer two 14-night Panama Canal itineraries departing from Port Everglades and San Diego on Oct. 5 and 19, 2012, respectively. Two 15-night sailings on March 18 and April 2, 2013, also depart Port Everglades and San Diego, respectively.

Through collaboration with the National Symphonic Orchestra and the Ópera Panamá foundation, the Music Festival of El Valle Association is bringing more great musical events to town. This evening, Friday, January 13, at Hotel Los Mandarinos, there is a recital called Opera Veraniega (Summer Opera). This effort is accredited to a group of residents in El Valle, who over 25 years have brought at least 20 classic recitals to El Valle. "The Year of the Dragon"
Celebrating Chinese New Year T

he Chinese Association of Panama is inviting the Panamanian public to celebrate "The Year of the Dragon," which will be held on January 22 and 23. This year, as part of this great celebration, a host of attractions are planned catering to the tastes of young and old. The activities include traditional dances by three teams and ballet brought directly from China, a martial arts extravaganza, an extraordinary show of fireworks, a Chinese beauty pageant for the most beautiful girls resident in Panama, a Ping Pong tournament, and a karaoke contest, the well-known
dragon dances and the lion will be represented and also some of the best known performers of Panamanian music, such as Osvaldo Ayala. It will all take place in what is known as the "New Chinatown" in the El Dorado shopping mall. The Chinese Association reports that January 22 marks the last day of the year and its usual fireworks display will be at 10:00 p.m., in time for people to return home safely. The celebrations will continue into the Chinese New Year's Day (23) and the closing ceremony is scheduled for 8:00 p.m., that day. According to the directors of

A Scottish celebration for all Its that time of year again. Burns Night 2011 is less than a month away. Panama’s Scottish community and friends get together every year on the anniversary of the birth of Rabbie Burns, Scotland’s national poet. This year the St. Andrew’s Society of Panama will celebrate Burn’s Night on Friday, February 2 at the Union Club in Panama City. Scottish patriots can don their kilts and sashes.
