The measure is part of the country’s strategic branding that encouraged more visitors than ever to enter the country than ever before when the two millionth
tourist was counted just days before Christmas.
Coverage is for tourists who arrive at Tocumen International Airport. According to Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) Administrator
Salomon Shamah, the policy covers medical expenditures up to $7,000, and if the visitor needs to be transferred to another medical center, overseas transportation up to $40,000 will be provided. The insurance also contains $20,000 in coverage if a visitor dies while in Panama.

ntre los nuevos destinos ofrecidos por la aerolínea nacional panameña Coa Airlines están muchas ciudades emocionantes como Chicago, Toronto y Nassau. Los pasajeros de la aerolínea, la cual utiliza el flote mas joven de la industria, han notado este año los nuevo “wing tips” aerodinámicos en muchos de los nuevos jets de la aerolínea. Los llamados “wing tips” tienen una curvatura hacia arriba al terminar la ala, para asegurar un vuelo más estable y con menos turbulencia a velocidades aun mas rápidos que lo normal. Los aviones comerciales vuelan a aproximadamente .08 por debajo de mach de velocidad, lo que implica a los incrementos de velocidad como más complicados debido al aumento en fricción en el aire al acercarse a velocidades supersónicos. También ayuda a incrementar la eficiencia de los combustibles.
Con el ritmo de crecimiento de la aerolínea, los nuevos aviones que se suman al flete seguramente incorporarán cada vez más, mayores detalles en cuanto a
su diseño. Estos son los detalles que podrán incrementar la velocidad de vuelos comerciales por hasta 100 millas por hora durante las próximas décadas.

M
ost successful tourism destinations around the world are serviced by airports nearby. Aeronautica Civil, Panama’s aviation authority, announced in mid March of 2011 that the site of a new international airport to serve the interior of Panama will be located at Rio Hato, in the district of
Antón in the Coclé province. Existing infrastructure comes from the former Rio Hato Army Air Base established in the 1930’s by the US to protect the Panama Canal. Exponential tourism growth in the country over the last decade has created the need for this new
international airport. The largest concentration of hotel rooms outside Panama City is along the Pacific beaches, from Chame to Farallón and Playa Blanca, where the dry climate and excellent beaches have made this an ideal place to vacation.

Mark Wahlberg films in Panama H
ollywood producer and actor Mark Wahlberg came to Panama in March and April of 2011 to shoot a few scenes for his latest feature film, “Contraband”, a Universal Pictures film, due to be released in 2012. The Panama Film Commission (an entity of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry) helped
coordinate the logistics for locations that were important to Wahlberg for their authenticity in the context of the script. The film will show aerial shots of the Panama Canal and the capital city, with sequences in Casco Viejo, Panama Ports and various streets throughout Panama City.

“Where the world meets” I
n late May of 2011 the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) launched a new video campaign created by the publicity firm BB&M. Five image-rich commercials were used to implement an advertising strategy to target specific markets in the United States, Latin America and Europe on global media networks like Discovery Channel, BBC, Eurosport, ESPN and CNN. BB&M conducted studies to find out what aspects of Panama would best appeal to potential tourists in different markets. Each
of the five commercials was created to highlight a specific aspect of Panama. The themes are nature/ adventure, history, ethnic groups/ traditions, the Panama Canal and the capital city. Each commercial spot closes with that same phrase: “With over 80 direct flights, Panama is where the world meets” accompanied by a graphic that illustrates the ease of access to the country. Panama campaign is a public-private strategy that annuls the $100 fee for baggage collection and checking back for the connecting flight. The promo encourages those taking advantage of it to enjoy their time shopping, visiting any number of attractions within or near the capital city as well as the wide array of dining, entertainment and nightlife options.

Trump sets new standard for luxury I
n July of 2011, Panama became the first location outside of the US to boast a Trump property with the opening of the Trump Ocean Club International Hotel and Tower in Punta Pacifica. There are over 1,000 units in the iconic building. Some 369 of them are part of the hotel. The
entire building, with its numerous restaurants, salons, office space, pools and event spaces, is proof that great things are happening in Panama, says Eric Trump, adding: “We offer the highest standard of luxury available in Latin America.”

New five star Marriott planned for Pacific I
n July a new hotel was announced, to be situated on the Pacific at San Carlos, 55 miles from Panama City, the new Panama Marriott Resort Casamar, a 5 star hotel with 180 rooms. A press release from Marriot International read: Marriott Hotels & Resorts have announced plans
to develop a 180-room hotel in the resort community Casamar on the Pacific coast of Panama. The fivestar resort, will be opened in 2013 under a franchise agreement with Casamar Development Tourism, SA and the Pacific Corporation, SA. The Casamar Marriott Resort
will be located on the beach, near the town of San Carlos. The community resort of Casamar will include a number of condominiums and villas, tropical gardens, walking paths, independent restaurants, shops, a health club and a beach club.

Ernesto Orillac is new ATP Sub Administrator
I
n September 2011, Ernesto Orillac was named the new Sub Administrator of the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP), a post equal to that of vice minister. It was vacated through formal resignation by Fernando De León after the ruling Cambio Democratico party’s alliance with the Panameñistas, fell apart. Sub Administrator Orillac had been working alongside ATP Administrator Salomón Shamah and De Leon as a special advisor to the ATP since the government took power in 2009. A professional from the tourism sector, he
is credited as having been very influential in the tourism growth that Panama is experiencing of late.

El sub Administrador Orillac ha estado trabajando junto con el Administrador del a ATP, Salomón Shamah, y De León como asesor especial de la ATP desde que el gobierno subió al poder en el 2009. Profesional del sector turismo, se le ha acreditado una gran influencia a Orillac en el crecimiento del turismo que Panamá está viviendo últimamente.

n November of 2011, an amphibious vehicle was added to Panama City’s attractions. The Aquabus City Tour is a new way to explore the evolution of the city with a tour by land and sea without having to change the means
of locomotion. The Aquabus has a capacity of 46 people, a top speed of 8 to 10 knots and maneuvers between 150 and 200 meters from the coastline. The tour began operating in December.

2011: A great year at the beach in Panama By Playacommunity.com
P
anama has had a fabulous year in all respects and the beach area is no exception. From new commerce, new residents and a host of new charitable initiatives, 2011 has been a year to remember. The "Playa Community" kicked off the year with the opening of Picasso Bar and Restaurante inside the gates of Coronado. The restaurant features live music, fabulous pizza and other delicious entrees. February found the Panamanian running community making their way to the beach for the first annual Carrera Vista Mar Run, hosted at Finca La Maya and sponsored by Asics and other lo-
cal businesses. The second annual will follow in 2012. The expat community has grown not only in numbers but in demographics with more young families moving to Panama and specifically the beach area for a higher quality lower cost of living. This saw the need for more international education and the opening of a 2nd International School in Santa Clara. Young families also encouraged more activities in the area, and the beach area has tennis professionals, swim professionals and music professionals that cater the kids of all ages. The grand opening of Nitro City this year has everyone making the trip to Punta Chame and
trying their hand at wake boarding or watching some of the motorcross professionals spin their wheels. Nitro City has definitely been a great added value to the Playa Community. Sunwave Fitness which got the residents going from Playa Blanca to Chame had a great first year of Beach Fitness, Beach Yoga and more and has residents getting fit and getting active. Panama Animal League – (PAL) is a new charitable initiative helping stray dogs off the streets and finding adoptive homes. A few local residents came together and saw the urgency in doing something about the beach dogs. To date the ladies of PAL have found over 60 stray dogs their forever homes. PAL coupled with Spay the Strays which hosted ten clinics and spayed/neutered
a record 511 dogs and cats. The Beach community also hosted the first annual breast cancer walk was held in October of this year with over 30 walkers in attendance. New restaurants, new residents, new big box stores, increased tourism, increased real estate sales and a whole lot of activity and fun has found 2011 at the beach a year to remember. From the Playa Community to everyone in Panama and around the world, we wish you a very Happy New Year and hope to see you all in 2012.

Panamá ha tenido un año pleno en todos los aspectos, y las áreas de playa no son una excepción. Desde nuevos comercios a nuevos residentes innovando con iniciativas altruistas, 2011 ha sido un año para recordar. La Comunidad de Playa empezó el año con la apertura del Restaurante Bar Picasso, dentro de las puertas de Coronado. El restaurante ofrece música en vivo, pizza y entrantes varios. Febrero se encontró con la comunidad panameña trotando hacia la playa para la primera Carrera Anual Vista Mar, que tuvo lugar en Finca La Maya y fue patrocinado por Asics y otros negocios locales. La segunda carrera anual será este año. La comunidad de expatriados ha crecido no solo en número sino en demografía con nuevas familias mudándose a Panamá y, concretamente, al área de playas donde se disfruta de mayor calidad de vida a menor precio. Así pues las necesidades de educación internacional han aumentado, y por eso se inauguró un
Segundo Colegio Internacional en Santa Clara. Las familias jóvenes también demandan nuevas actividades en el area, y en ese sentido destacan los profesionales del tenis, la natación y la música que se encargan de enseñar a los niños de todas las edades. La apertura de Nitro City en Punta Chame ha disparado el número de visitas hasta esa zona para practicar Wake Boarding, o ver exihibiciones de motos de montaña. Nitro City da un valor añadido a la Comunidad de Playa. Sunwave Fitness, por su parte, ha empujado a muchos residentes de Playa Blanca hasta Chame, para ponerse al día con las últimas tendencias de puesta en forma y yoga, entre otras actividades saludables. La Plaza de la Villa es la nueva sede de una tienda Machetazo, que ha sido un éxito entre los vecinos y visitantes de fin de semana. Los viajes a la ciudad se reducen a medida que se abren más negocios en el área de playa, como los casos recientes en el Mall de Coronado o
la tienda Novey. La Liga Animal de Panamá (PAL) es una nueva iniciativa altruista para ayudar a los perros de las calles a encontrar un hogar de adopción. Algunos residentes locales se pusieron de acuerdo en colaborar a fin de tratar de cubrir las necesidades de estos perros de playa. Hasta la fecha, las chicas de PAL han ubicado en hogares calientes a 60 perros. PAL trabaja junto a “Spay the Strays”, con presencia en 10 clínicas y ficheros que guardan los datos de registro de hasta 511 perros y gatos. La Comunidad de Playa también ha organizado una caminata para luchar contra el cancer de pecho, a lo que atendieron 30 personas en octubre del pasado año. Nuevos restaurants, nuevos residentes, nuevas tiendas, más turismo, más ventas de casas y mucha actividad y diversión en 2011. La Comunidad de Playa os desea un Feliz Año Nuevo a todos, esperando veros las caras a todos en Panamá en este 2012.

n December 23, 2011, Panama received its two millionth tourist arrival to the country. The news was well received and transmitted throughout the country. Tourism grew exponentially in Panama over the last decade and now sits among the Canal, the Colón Free Zone (CFZ) and banking as one of the major motors of the economy. To celebrate the news, The
