During a parade that passed in front of the Presidential Palace in Casco Viejo, Miss Panama Sheldry Saez made an appearance on the balcony with President Ricardo Martinelli, the first lady Marta Linares de Martinelli and other political figures. It was to the delight of the crowd below when the president bestowed a little kiss on the cheek of this Panamanian beauty.

Tourism companies from Costa Rica and Panama meet in David, Chiriquí

n October 26, the Gran Hotel Nacional in David in the Chiriquí province was the stage for the fifth celebration of the Panamanian and Costa Rican Tourism Businesses Meeting. The meeting was called “Sin Fronteras” or “Without Borders” and sought to strengthen ties between members of this tourism sector. The meeting was especially popular among businesses from the Southern Zone of Costa Rica, specifically the Pacific side, and from both sides of Panama, in Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro. As a result of meetings held by this group, which have taken place in Boquete, Volcán, Bambito and in Costa Rica, a bi-national commission has been formed to facilitate the ease of border crossings for tourists. Representing Costa Rica at the event were: Pedro González, regional director of tourism in the Southern Zone, Luis Centeno, president of the Osa Peninsula Tourism Chamber (CATUOSA) and the Costa Rican consulate in David, Flora Venegas.

Compañías turísticas de Costa Rica y Panamá se encuentran en Chiriquí E l 26 de octubre, el Gran Hotel Nacional de David, en la provincia de Chiriquí, fue escenario del quinto encuentro entre compañías de Panamá y Costa Rica para debatir cuestiones relacionadas con el turismo. El encuentro fue bautizado “Sin fronteras” o “Without Borders” y sirvió para estrechar lazos entre miembros del sector. El encuentro fue especialmente bien acogido entre negocios de la zona sureste de Costa Rica, concretamente de la costa del Pacífico, y también a ambos lados de Panamá, en Chiriquí y Bocas del Toro. Después de las reuniones mantenidas por este grupo de comerciantes, que tuvieron lugar en Boquete, Volcán, Bambito y Costa Rica, se formó una comisión binacional para aprovechar el paso de los turistas que atraviesan esa zona. Jane Goodall documentary premieres at afternoon of “Musical Biodiversity” D

r. Jane Goodall, famous for her research on chimpanzees in Africa and her efforts in conservation, is the special guest at a unique activity on Sunday, November 13 at the City of Knowledge. Panama Jazz Productions, organizers of the Panama Jazz Festival, and Earth Train, a non profit conservation initiative, are presenting ‘An Afternoon of Musical Biodiversity’ which will feature the Latin American premier of Dr. Goodall’s new documentary “Jane’s Journey” narrated by American actress Angelina Jolie. This event will be the closing act of the first incursion that Dr. Goodall’s organization Roots and Shoots has in Latin America. Her efforts have been combined with those of Nathan Gray’s Earth Train foundation and its Valle Mamoní Reserve to the east of Pan-

ama City, where Jane has been meeting with other conservationists. Mother of the eco-movement Dr. Goodall is considered to have sparked the ecological movement, starting in the 1960’s when it is said that she changed the way we view our role in the environment and the animal world through her demonstration that chimps posses characteristics that were until then only considered to be human. Event Schedule The documentary “Jane’s Journey”, directed by Lorenz Knauer, will make its Latin American premier Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the large Ateneo Theater in the City of Knowledge, located in the former Canal Zone across from the Miraflores Locks and Panama

Canal Visitor Center. The film is narrated by Angelina Jolie, Pierce Brosnan and Kofi Annan. At 6:00 p.m. Dr. Goodall will make a presentation to the audience and then a concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. The musical section will feature Matt Marvuglio, Marco Pignataro and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. The musical presentation, entitled “Musical Biodiversity” will include a performance made featuring the first profesional flute ever made of 100% recycled material. Panama Jazz Festival founder and organizer of the event through his company Panama Jazz Productions, Danilo Pérez, says this will be an unprecidented event, where music is used as a tool for ecological restoration.

“Greentreprenuers” say: Save Our Jungle! A

n initiative called Save Our Jungle is taking the quick route to greenhood. SaveOurJungle.com is employing some good old fashioned capitalism to their efforts in order to preserve one of the world’s most endangered eco-systems. Located in the Torio Valley of the western Azuero Peninsula this area is burdened by ongoing ecological threats including logging, road construction, mining, burning, urbanization, poor farming practices, widespread grazing and farming on steep slopes and industrial growth. “Save Our Jungle is raising funds through private donations to acquire land and create a private reserve for conservation and education,” says a representative. Their goal is preserve this bio-corridor which links between the Forestal Montuoso to the north and Parque Nacional Cerro Hoya to the south. Between them, lie dozens of properties, called fincas. And many of them are threatening to cut off these interdependent ecosystems. Mining concessions loom in these lands. The beauty of the project lies in that its mission is to begin preservation, without reinventing the wheel. Certainly, this group of investors will receive a green ticket from Nathan Gray’s Earth Train foundation upon donating the valley to his reforestation efforts, at the same time they will share this experience of caring for nature with tens of thousands of users through several platforms of new media. The delegation, led by Miriam Sapiro, second head of the USTR, and who visited the country this week, seeks to coordinate the next steps for the implementation of the trade promotion agreement (TPA) between the two countries, said the U.S. Embassy.

First lock gate under construction The Unidos por el Canal Group began structuring the first gate of the 16 to be installed in the new locks of the widened Panama Canal. The consortium, composed of Sacyr, Impregilo, Jan de Nul and Urban Construction, which designs and builds the new locks, said the new gates are manufactured on the premises of the subcontractor Cimolai, which has its workshops in Polcenigo, Italy.

Money for Model School The Ministry of Education allocated $11 million to build a new school in La Chorrera and update the Professional and Technical Institute (IPT), in the same district. The new facility has been dubbed the “Model School” according to a statement from the Ministry of Education (Meduca). The Minister, Lucy Molinar, said that regardless of the adjectives “they are good schools” with proper technological infrastructure, and the concept was of following the best practices

of the last private schools built in the country, such as St. Augustine and Javier.

Not a tax haven The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama rejected the accusations made in the G-20 summit, which indicated that Panama is a “tax haven”. Federico Humbert Arias, president of the Chamber, said “we do not agree with the OECD [Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development] pointing to Panama as a ‘tax haven’ after our country abided by all recommendations concerning fiscal transparency.”

Bill to protect Ngäbe mineral resources The president of the Commerce Commission of the National Assembly, Raul Hernandez, reminded the Minister of Commerce, Ricardo Quijano, and the Executive, that the Assembly has a commitment to approve the special law proposed by the Indians for the protection of mineral resources in the Ngäbe Bugle area.

Mining expansion in 2012 Minera Panama hopes to start the extraction site of Balboa in 2012 and thus expand to more than three areas its production plan for copper, gold and molybdenum in Colón. The mineral deposit of Balboa was discovered in August 2010 within the concession area of 13,000 hectares and has larger reserves than those in the initial plan of extraction in Botija, Valle Grande and Colina, presented in the environmental impact assessment. igns at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London this week pointed to growing interest in Panama as a destination from the U.K. and Europe. Although there are no direct flights from London as yet, options for travellers have recently increased with new schedules from Iberia via Madrid, KLM via Amsterdam, Air Condor via Frankfurt, Delta via Atlanta and Continental via Houston. WTM is one of the most important tourism fairs in the world and a perfect platform for all the European markets. Panamanian representatives at this year’s event, from Monday to Friday this week, closed many deals which will place the country in catalogues of tour operators next year. Thirteen Panamanian companies joined the stand organized by the Panamanian Tourism Authority (ATP), representing hotels, travel and tour agencies, and renta-car companies. Focus Publications Group was also represented by marketing manager Patricia Puentes who distributed copies of the Focus Guidebook and ‘The Visitor” weekly newspaper and promoted online versions of the publications. The stand emphasised the opportunities in Panama for cultural, adventure and eco tourism. Folk dancers from the National Dance and Folklore Company in colorful costumes and body painting by an Embera Indian couple, who demonstrated their art on visitors to the stand, drew a lot of attention. Sr. Ernesto Orillac vice-minister of the ATP gave interviews to media attending the event, emphasising that Panama this year hosted the World Surf Championship and was among the top ten destinations chosen by National Geographic. He also promoted Carnival for 2012 and Panama’s International Film Festival scheduled for April.

as señales emitidas desde la Feria Internacional de Turismo (WTM en inglés) de Londres esta semana apuntaron a un crecimiento del interés hacia Panamá como destino turístico en Gran Bretaña y Europa. Aunque aún no hay conexiones directas desde Londres, el destino se ha refozado con rutas que hacen escalas en Madrid (Iberia), Ámsterdam (KLM), Frankfurt (Air Condor), Atlanta (Delta) y Houston (Continental). La Feria Internacional de Turismo es una de las más importantes del mundo y una plataforma para todos los mercados europeos. Los representantes panameños que asistieron al evento que transcurrió de lunes a viernes, cerraron muchos acuerdos que situarán estratégicamente la imagen del país en los calendarios de muchos tour operadores el año próximo. Trece compañías panameñas disfrutaron del stand organizado por la Autoridad Panameña e Turismmo (ATP), representando hoteles, agencias de viajes y tour operadores, y compañías de rent-a-car. El Grupo Focus Publications estuvo también representado por Patricia Puentes, quién distribuyó copias de la Guía Focus y del periódico semanal El Visitante así como promovió las versiones online de ambas publicaciones. hy Buy Gold? It has been historically valuable, while the U.S. dollar, the Euro and other currencies have huge debts of the countries printing them. Owning gold is a hedge against inflation, deflation and currency devaluation. Gold is also better than currencies, having risen 29.8% against the U.S. dollar in 2010. This was the 10th year in a row that gold climbed higher against the U.S. Dollar. Last year gold increased higher against eight other major currencies, as well. According to the Wall Street Journal on April 6, 2011 gold rose in value over the past 10 years by nearly 470%. There are many ways to own gold. Some Companies sell gold certificates on the internet claiming the gold is stored in vaults, but such certificates are subject to fraud, forgeries and carry costs such as high commissions and expensive storage fees. Physical ownership is the farsafer than certificates. They are nothing more than paper promising to pay. If a financial system crashed all of the certificate holders would rush to unload their paper for less than what they are worth. Actual physical ownership is… worth its weight in gold. Owing coins or bars are the two standard ways to physically own gold. Bars are the most tradi-

tional way, using bullion gold bars, which are normally sold in 26.4 or 2.2 pound bars. Purchasing and storing gold bars requires a large investment as most bars are sold in large quantities and not by individual bars. Buying gold coins is the most popular method of physically owning gold. That’s because they can be purchased in small quantities and stored in small deposit boxes. Selling gold coins is also easier than selling gold bars or gold certificates. Bullion coins are priced according to their fine weight, plus a small premium based on supply and demand. The most popular gold coin is the South African Krugerrand. Other popular gold coins include the Australian Kangaroo, the Canadian Maple Leaf, and the American Buffalo and Gold Eagle. The purity of the gold makes a difference in value. Not all gold coins contain the same purity. If a gold coin has less than 24 karats (.999% pure) it will be mixed with some other metal. The South African Krugerrand and the American Eagle are .917% pure while the Canadian Maple Leaf is .999% pure. The higher the purity, the shinier the coin, but gold coins with mixed alloys will last longer because pure gold is extremely soft. Where to buy in Panama There are a few Panama

banks which will sell gold coins to the public and store them in their vaults. U.S. taxpayers do not have to report gold stored overseas to the U.S. government, offering a means for storing wealth privately. Where to store gold overseas Bank safe deposit boxes are the cheapest and safest way to store gold. Storing gold or other valuables in at a bank in one’s home country leaves those assets subject to government seizure or by courts enforcing civil judgments. If things go bad in one’s country requiring a quick exit, trying to move gold will take up too much time. And it is easier to sell the gold overseas than it is in one’s country subjecting the profits to capital gains taxes and other fees and restrictions. One should always be prepared for further economic meltdown and by becoming international one can reduce the risks of having all assets in the same country. Panama has one of the best bank secrecy laws in the world. Panama banks are solvent, strong, and invest conservatively which is why the global economic crisis affecting U.S. and EU banks has not affected Panama’s banks. Buying gold coins from Panama banks and storing them in their safe deposit boxes makes sense.

You cannot disembark at Bird Island as the area is protected but there are lots of birds to see from the boat. Back on Isla Colón again, at the village of Boca del Drago, there is a nice restaurant serving fresh Caribbean food and beaches nearby with red starfish in the warm, calm waters. The return trip to Bocas Town can be done by water taxi or land taxi.

Mythical tourism attraction in Chiriquí In the Volcán highlands in the Chiriquí province of Western Panama, the “Sitio Barriles” archeological site is one of the most mythical tourism attractions in the area. Its origin dates back to between the years 300 and 600 and is considered one of the most renowned pre-Columbian discoveries. It was discovered in 1947 when Pedro Corella, along with his wife Elisa Sarracín de Corella, found a rock that had been shaped in a cylindrical form. It looked like a barrel, they thought, hence the root of its name “barril”or barrel. Other pieces have also been found, among them “mutates,” statues of Indian chiefs, or “caciques” and petroglyphs, one of which shows a map to the crater of Volcán Barú. There are also carvings that show a map to ancient settlements on both sides of the continental divide. n la región de Tierras Altas de Volcán, provincia de Chiriquí, encontramos algunos de los sitios turísticos más míticos y atractivos de la provincia como el Sitio Arqueológico de Barriles cuya data es fechada entre 300 y 600 d.c, y que es considerado como un descubrimiento precolombino de genuino valor arqueológico, nacional e internacional.
