Motor show at ATLAPA T

he Panama Motor Show opens today, Friday, October 14 with a 6:00 p.m. inauguration ceremony at ATLAPA Convention Center. The event is organized by the Panamanian Association of Auto Dealers (ADAP) and will carry on through Sunday, October 23. All dealer concessionaires in Panama will have their models on display. The 2012 models will be on display and available for purchase at special prices just for the show. Savings are so significant ($2,000 - $7,000 depending on sticker price) that the event receives around 30,000 annual visitors. On-site financing through many of the country’s financial institutions is available as well. The fair is open weekdays from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and weekends from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Premier Pearl Islands project launches Las Villas de la Marina condo phase O n October 5, the Isla Viveros development in the Pearl Islands Archipelago in Panama held the official launch of the Las Villas de La Marina condominium phase of this luxury island project. The event took place at Trump Ocean Club Hotel. It is the first condo phase at Isla Viveros, and will offer a select few Panamanian and foreign resident families a luxurious and tranquil escape. There will only be about 100 of these units available, situated

ne of the products offered by Panamanian law firms is a unique asset protection package that incorporates a Private Interest Foundation with a Belize corporation. What makes this attractive is that it spreads ownership of one’s assets into two countries where both have strong anonymous corporation and bank secrecy laws. With economic pressure affecting the world, there are an increasing number of cases where people file desperate suits that seek to get more alimony or to challenge wills. Privacy through anonymous ownership of one’s assets can prevent frivolous lawsuits and costly probate battles. And in a world with increasing access to resources for finding people and their assets, it is more important to get double protection. Panama’s Private Interest Foundation (PIF) law is modeled after similar laws in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. A Panama PIF is a legal entity combining three different things: a Trust, a Corporation, and an Estate Planning tool. The Private Interest Foundation has five main components: 1. Founder: The founder (law firm) creates the Foundation in the Panama Public Registry. 2. Foundation Council: The council serves the same function as directors do for a corporation. The council member names and

passport numbers are registered in the Panama Public Registry. In order to protect the privacy of clients, law firms generally provide a nominee (straw man) council, and provide pre-signed, undated letters of resignation from the nominee council. Thus, the council has no real control and can be quickly replaced. 3. Protector: The Protector ultimately controls the Foundation and is usually the client. Upon creating the Foundation, the council appoints a Protector through a notarized Private Protectorate document. Since the document is private and not publicly registered, the Protector remains 100% anonymous. Thus, the Protector has full control over the Foundation and all of its assets while remaining anonymous. 4. Beneficiaries: The Beneficiaries are appointed through a Private Letter of Wishes or a more formal set of By-Laws, written by the Protector. The Letter of Wishes is a private document keeping the beneficiaries 100% anonymous. Only the Protector can change or modify this document. 5. Registered Agent: The Act requires every Foundation have a registered agent, who must be a Panamanian lawyer. A Belize corporation, like one in Panama, offers tax-free income along with privacy as there are no public records of who the direc-

tors or shareholders are. Only one director and shareholder is required. The Register of Shareholders can only be inspected by shareholders or by a Belize court order at the request by a shareholder. The only public filings with the Belize government are a Memorandum & Articles of Association. No annual tax returns or audited accounts are required. Anonymous “Bearer Shares” can be used in Belize where who ever possesses the shares is the owner. Belize, where English is the first language, is also a player in the world of offshore banking. Account holders never have to travel to Belize to open an account or conduct banking business. From anywhere in the world the account holder can use the Internet, email, courier service, or even telephone by simply contacting the banking representative or through a registered agent. Belize Debit cards and Belize ATM bank cards are accepted worldwide. MultiCurrency (including USD, CAD, GBP, and EUR) bank accounts can be opened in Belize. Estate planning is another benefit of this structure. Since all of the assets are held by a Belize corporation which is owned by a Panama Private Interest Foundation, once the Protector passes away his/her beneficiaries (heirs) will immediately own the assets without costly and time consuming probate.

Lo que hace esto atractivo es que reparte la propiedad de los bienes de uno entre dos países donde ambos tienen fuertes corporaciones anónimas y leyes de discreción bancaria. Con la presión económica afectando el mundo, hay un número creciente de casos en los cuales la gente pone demandas desesperadas por mejores pensiones o para impugnar un testamento. La privacidad a través de la propiedad anónima de los bienes propios puede prevenir frívolas demandas y costosas batallas por legalización de testamentos. Y en un mundo con creciente acceso a recursos para encontrar a la gente y sus activos, es más importante obtener doble protección. Panama’s Private Interest Foundation (“Fundación de Interés Privado” –PIF, por sus siglas en inglés) sigue el modelo de leyes similares en Suiza, Liechtenstein y Luxemburgo. Una PIF panameña es una entidad legal que combina

tres elementos diferentes: un Fideicomiso, una Corporación y una Herramienta de Planificación Patrimonial. La Fundación de Interés Privado tiene cinco tiene cinco componentes principales: 1. Fundador: El fundador (la firma de abogados) crea la Fundación en el Registro Público de Panamá. 2. El Consejo de la Fundación: El consejo sirve la misma función que los directores para una corporación. Los nombres y números de pasaporte de los miembros del consejo son registrados en el Registro Público de Panamá. Para proteger la privacidad de sus clientes, las firmas de abogados generalmente proveen a un consejero improvisado y cartas de renuncia del mismo pre-firmadas y sin fechas. De esta manera, el consejero no tiene ningún control real y puede ser reemplazado rápidamente. 3. Protector: El Protector es quien ultimadamente controla la Fundación y es usualmente el cliente. Al crear la Fundación, el consejo nombra a un Protector a través de un documento de Protectorado Privado notariado. Ya que el documento

es privado y no está registrado públicamente, el Protector permanece 100% anónimo. De esta manera, el Protector tiene control total sobre la Fundación y todos sus bienes a la vez que se mantiene anónimo. 4. Beneficiarios: Los Beneficiarios son nombrados a través de una Carta Privada de Deseos o un conjunto de estatutos más formal escrito por el Protector. La Carta de Deseos es un documento privado que mantiene a los beneficiarios 100% anónimos. Solo el Protector puede cambiar o modificar este documento. 5. Agente Registrado: El Acta requiere que cada Fundación tenga un agente registrado. El mismo debe ser un abogado panameño. Las corporaciones en Belice, al igual que las panameñas, ofrecen ingresos libres de impuestos con privacidad, ya que no hay récords públicos de quiénes son los directores o accionistas. Sólo ser requiere un director y accionista. El Registro de Accionistas sólo puede ser inspeccionado por accionistas o por una orden judicial pedida por un accionista. Los únicos documentos públicos con el gobierno de Belice son un Memorándum y Artículos de la Asociación. No se requieren declaraciones de impuestos o cuentas auditadas. “Acciones al porta-

dor” anónimas pueden usarse en Belice donde quien sea que posea las acciones es el dueño. Belice, donde el inglés es el primer idioma, juega también un rol importante en el mundo de banca en el extranjero. Los cuenta-habientes no necesitan viajar a Belice para abrir una cuenta o realizar negocios bancarios. Desde cualquier parte del mundo, el dueño de la cuenta puede usar el Internet, e-mails, servicio de mensajería o incluso el teléfono simplemente contactando al representante del banco o a través de un agente regis-

trado. Las tarjetas de crédito y débito de Belice son aceptadas en todo el mundo. Pueden abrirse cuentas bancarias de múltiples divisas (incluyendo USD, CAD, GBP y EUR) en Belice. La Planificación Patrimonial es otro beneficio de esta estructura. Ya que todos los bienes se encuentran en una corporación de Belice propiedad de una Fundación de Interés Privado en Panamá, si falleciera el Protector, sus beneficiarios (herederos) recibirían sus bienes inmediatamente sin costosas y lentas legalizaciones de testamento.

Big business with Britain, the UK’s event at Trump By Jacob Ehrler

ew British Ambassador Michael John Halloway has big plans for stepping up integration between Great Britain and Panama. This week he revealed some of the ideas that will be presented at the Britain in Panama event to be held on Thursday, October 20 at the Trump Ocean Club Hotel in Punta Pacifica from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Education and urban planning are the focus. It is co-organized with the Embassy by the newly upgraded Panama British Business Association – now the British Chamber of Commerce of Panama (BCCP). The BCCP president is banker Joe Salterio and the executive director is morning radio personality Gerry Dowden. Kicking it up a notch Ambassador Halloway began his four year post this year. He has a clear vision of an improved Panama through British involvement, and with good reason. Few people actually realize that the UK is the biggest investor in Panama, ahead of the US and Spain. But according to Proinvex, Panama’s foreign investment agency under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the figure is somewhere between $7 and $8 billion. Many large and important Panamanian companies, from Panadol to Panama Pacifico and from Cerveceria Nacional to Cable & Wireless, are

actually British. “We want to do – not talk about doing – great things, real things for Great Britain in Panama,” says Ambassador Halloway. “The first edition of Panama Invest,” organized by Proinvex, “was held last year in London and that’s not a coincidence... Britons need to know about Panama’s commercial and logistics center.” Event preview The lack of urban planning and education in Panama are not light subjects. The solutions to these factors will be key to the success of the development of the nation and its ability to compete in the world market. The UK’s excellence in design, planning, engineering and construction will be showcased in a Green and Sustainable Architecture section featuring Dan Epstein, director of sustainability for the London 2012 Olympics, which are the “greenest” games to date and have already transformed the East London venue from an impoverished and forgotten area into one of the most vibrant parts of the city. “There are correlations to be made between East London and Panama,” says Ambassador Halloway. Panelists for this section will include José Domingo Arias, Minister of Housing of Panama and Herman Bern Jr., CEO of

Empresas Bern. Regarding education, Tony Millns, Chief Executive of the company English UK will speak on how to improve English language standards as well as how to enhance capacities delivered for the needs of the private sector. Martin Doel, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges will present on the skill gap and how to update a workforce to meet industry needs. Brian Wisdom of People 1st (UK) will also share his expertise in the hospitality and service sector. Panamas’ Minister of Education Lucy Molinar will be at the event to share progress on her massive mission to improve education here. The closing speech will be given by Britain’s Minister of State for the Foreign Office, Jeremy Browne, MP, whose remarks at last year’s well-attended event left businessmen and women inspired. Este fin de semana, el embajador reveló algunas de las ideas que se presentarán en el evento Britain in Panama el jueves 20 de octubre en el Trump Ocean Club Hotel en Punta Pacífica de 8:00 a.m. a 2:00 p.m. La educación y planificación urbana son los puntos centrales. anama gives free health insurance for 30 days to all who enter the country through Tocumen International Airport. Cards promoting this benefit are available at the airport. But carrying the card is not necessary to collect on the policy to cover medical expenses for accidents that occur while in national territory. ‘Piracy in Spanish America,’ a new exhibition at the Interoceanic Canal Museum n exhibition that is five centuries in the making has just opened in Panama City. “Mare clausum, Mare liberum: La Piratería en la América Española” (Piracy in Spanish America), opened at the Interoceanic Canal Museum on Wednesday, October 12, and will be on through November 27. This exposition, which opened on the 519th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America, narrates the story of 300 years of piracy in America, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, using original documents that contain information on pirate attacks that took place in Panama. The exhibition includes original documents written here in Panama that record attacks. Several hundred years after their creation, these documents have returned to the Isthmus from the Archivo General de Indias in Sevilla, Spain. ver 100 people attended the Canadian Thanksgiving dinner held by the CanadaPLUS Club at the Union Club on Saturday, October 8. Among them was the newly-arrived Canadian Ambassador, Sylvia Cesaratto. The traditional turkey feast was enlivened with the introduction of stars from Opera Panama’s performance of La Boheme. Opera director Irena Sylya and New York Soprano Amy Blake rendered ‘O Canada,’ the Canadian national anthem in English and French, and later in the evening Blake and tenor Angelo Ferrari sang arias from La Boheme and received standing ovations. Cruise season in Panama begins T

he Canal transit of the cruise ship the Island Princess last week officially kicked off the cruise season in Panama. The cruise season will run through mid-2012 with more than 200 passenger ships crossing the waterway, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced. Many cruise companies are also considering Panama as a destination. They include Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. Smaller ships, like the Wind Star and Le Levant, are also expected to transit the Canal this season. Two members of the Carnival Cruises fleet, the Carnival Inspiration and the Carnival Para-

What to see on a 2012 tour Visitors to La Finca Oro Negro will be invited to see a one-acre “Pizza Garden” that contains eight ingredients that are commonly found in pizza. Guests are able to see how these vegetables are grown, pick the crops and then make their own pizza from ingredients grown on the farm. There will also be a chance to see the South African Boer Goats in their habitat and be part of the first step to make goat cheese – by milking the animals, if desired. he tropical waters in Panama's Pacific ocean attract humpback whales from opposite ends of the globe. Some pods are just arriving this month from the north to eat, frolic, breed and give birth off the coast of Pedregal in the Gulf of Chiriquí. Others, who migrate yearly to the Pearl Islands Archipelago in Panama Bay, will soon begin their long journey back to the cool waters surrounding Antarctica where they spend the southern hemisphere's summer.

Anne Gordon of WhaleWatchingPanama.com is offering one last tour in the Pearl Islands this season to see and swim with humpback whales before they migrate south to Antarctica. The five-day trip will be from October 16 to 21, but tourists are welcome to come along for any part of the trip. y lovely wife was shopping for groceries at the El Rey supermarket in Coranado recently, when a woman she had seen before, but didn’t remember where, greeted her as if she were a long lost friend. Naturally, my lovely wife was polite to the lady, who was dressed entirely in orange from a fake flower in her gray hair to her bright orange flip flops. “So how’s the weather up in the mountains?” the woman, whose name my lovely wife couldn’t remember, inquired. “Oh, I guess on a scale from 1 to 10, it’s about 2,” my lovely wife replied. “Really? How do you mean?” The pumpkin lady seemed mystified. “Well,” my lovely wife replied, “If it’s not raining, it’s about to.” Right now, in mid-to-late October, is when residents of Panama get a bit tired of Rainy Season. Whether ex-pats or lifetime natives, and certainly short-term tourists, it’s no fun when it consistently rains on your parade, or picnic or shopping trip. Everybody enjoys sunshine but it’s been raining off and on (mostly on) since May. Of course

we’re lucky with never a hurricane splashing over our little isthmus, but after a while it does seem that it might be fun to have a few consecutive days of sunshine. Dry Season doesn’t even threaten until mid-December. The villainess of the piece is of course La Niña, that bitchy condition out in the Pacific that blows the rain down our way in amounts that are beyond our simple needs. El Niño seems to be less generous with the precipitation, which most don’t find as difficult to endure when it only comes in the form of an afternoon thunderstorm. However, La Niña seems ensconced, like a guest who has overstayed her welcome, with rain coming hard and often. She was also responsible for all that snow up north last winter, which is something we escaped. So we should count our blessings— right? Wrong. Those of us, who had a choice, came to tropical Panama for fun in the sun—not cloudy, muggy and rainy. Ol’Jack does realize that there’s nothing one can do about the weather (except complain) and that talking about the weather is often considered boring. Sorry,

but particularly during a long wet Rainy Season, there’s very little else to spice up a conversation, since most of our activities have been rained out. Sitting around the condo watching endless soccer games on TV isn’t as noteworthy as a story from a fishing trip, or a golf game or nice day at the beach or even an afternoon spent out in the garden. We talk about the weather because it affects our lives. Take Fluffy our loyal little dog for example. Fluffy is frightened of thunder. In the city it sounds like some giant is rolling a huge bowling ball down the street, while up in the mountains, it reverberates around as if one of our volcanoes isn’t so dormant anymore. I don’t think the FARC use cannon, but if they did, it wouldn’t be so loud. Poor Fluffy. Instead of sitting crossed-pawed on the balcony, she’s wedged herself under the coffee table. Often our scaredy-dog will attempt to glue herself to my shins or get under the covers if we’re in bed. While Rainy Season is a nuisance that spreads a wet blanket over most of our lives, for Fluffy it can be a time of terror.

Exhibición en el Museo Reina Torres de Araúz

“Leonardo da Vinci: genio, artista e inventor”

a exhibición “Leonardo da Vinci: genio, artista e inventor” está oficialmente abierta al público en el Museo Antropológico Reina Torres de Araúz (MARTA) en Ave. Juan Pablo II, Llanos de Curundú. La oportunidad de explorar el mundo del inmortal artista renacentista está abierta de martes de viernes de 9:00 a.m. a 7:00 p.m. a $9 para adultos y $7 para niños, y de 10:00 a.m. a 7:00 p.m. los sábados y domingos, a $11 para adultos y $9 para niños. La exposición, que cuenta con 150 réplicas de pinturas, bosquejos y modelos de los inventos de da Vinci –todos cuidadosamente reconstruidos por expertos italiano—, ocupa el museo entero.

También hay un documental de 22 minutos sobre la vida del artista.

Traditions and fun at Torito Guapo Festival T

he town of Antón, in the province of Coclé, will hold its annual "Torito Guapo" ("Handsome Bull") Festival through October 17. A tradition brought by the Spanish during the colonial period, the festival takes its name from the main character of the celebration – a man dressed in a bull-like costume, who chases passers-by down the streets. There are also folklore performances and outdoor dance parties. The festivities also give an opportunity to see some of Panama's traditional folklore characters like Diablos Sucios and activities like the greased pig chase. The town of Antón is located on the InterAmerican Highway between Rio Hato and Penonomé in the province of Coclé. It should not be confused with El Valle de Antón, which is a mountain destination located not to far from the town of Antón, but in the province of Panama.

l pueblo de Antón en la provincia de Coclé está llevando a cabo su Festival del Torito Guapo hasta el 17 de octubre. Una tradición originalmente traída por los españoles durante el período colonial, el festival obtiene su nombre del personaje principal de la celebración –un hombre vestido en un disfraz de toro que persigue a los peatones por las calles. También hay presentaciones de folklore y fiestas al aire libre. Las festividades también brindan la oportunidad de ver algunos de los protagonistas del folklore panameño, como los Diablos Sucios, y actividades como “el puerco enceba’o”. El pueblo de Antón está ubicado en

la Carretera Interamericana, entre Río Hato y Penonomé, en la provincia de Coclé. No debe confundirse con El Valle de Antón, destino montañoso cerca de Antón, pero en la provincia de Panamá.

Apoyo del Gobierno El Instituto Nacional de Cultura (INAC) está apoyando el Festival del Toro Guapo de Antón con una donación de $15,000 para fomentar la conservación de las costumbres nacionales y promover la cultura panameña entre turistas nacionales y extranjeros. El Festival Torito Guapo se ha estado realizando oficialmente desde 1964.
