We are here, summer 2020, in a world full of unexpected circumstances. As always, FocusOn Magazine’s key vision is to add value to our local businesses and that now pushes us more towards being creatively prepared and vigilant for the vague post covid-19 life. End of the day, we all have to do our part and strive to get back our uncompromised normalcy very soon. We had to postpone our Spring Golf charity event and cancel Alzheimer’s Association’s awareness activities. However we do encourage our readers to support all these causes, details are inside. I would like to mention a special thanks to folks supporting our new collaborative animal rescue project, with Unique Heating & Cooling, “Safe and Sound”.

Summer edition cover features Dr. Stacey Tull and page 10 carries their full story. However, this is a wedding themed edition and so we got all aspects covered, including a special article by Shelly Pordea on page 25. This gives them the advantage of transitioning to their new forever homes much more easily and quickly.

Rich in History - Part Two

From the Journal of Joseph Whitehouse, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in May of 1804.

Wednesday the 16th We set out this morning, having clear weather, and proceeded on very well, about 2 o’clock P. M we arrived at Saint Charles, where we passed the evening with a great deal of satisfaction, and chearfulness, and all our men appeared to be in good spirits.

“We shall waite here for Captain Lewis, who is to meet us from Saint Louis. Saint Charles is a Village settled

by French Inhabitants. It is a handsome situation, laying on the North side of the River contains about 80 Houses, built in the french fashion, and has a small Roman Catholic Chapel. its Inhabitants are chiefly canadian french; who are chiefly concerned & employed by others Trading with the Indians who reside on the River Mesouri, and other Rivers that empty into it. The land adjoining it appear to be hilly, but the soil is good and fitting for Agriculture.—Saint Charles lies in Latitude 38° 54’ 39 North & 19 Miles from the Mouth of the Mesouri River” Because of discrepancies in the records and journals, especially concerning the French boatmen, it is difficult to determine exactly the number of men who left River Dubois with Clark. George Drouillard was absent on an errand and may not be the Frenchman singled out

by Clark; possibly he was Baptiste Deschamps, the patroon (foreman) of the hired French boatmen, although later he seems to have been in charge of a pirogue..

The exact number and names of the French boatmen remain unclear throughout (see Appendix A). Clark may not have counted York, his personal servant, in his total. Among those leaving Wood River, besides Clark and York, were twenty-five members of the permanent party, as then planned, who were to make the full trip to the Pacific: Sergeants Floyd, Ordway, and Pryor, and Privates Bratton, Collins, Colter, Reubin and Joseph Field, Gass, Gibson, Goodrich, Hall, Howard, McNeal, Newman, Potts, Reed, Shannon, Shields, Thompson, Werner, Whitehouse, Willard, 12 | focusOn Magazine

Windsor, and Weiser. Corporal Richard Warfington’s detachment, who were to return from some point up the Missouri with dispatches, then included Privates Boley, Dame, Frazer, Tuttle, and White. Private John Robertson (Robinson) may also have been present at this time; perhaps he was one of the six soldiers in a pirogue—probably Warfington’s squad.

The enlisted men’s journals all state that there were three sergeants and thirty-eight “working hands”; whether York (An African American enslaved person owned by William Clark) counted as a working hand is not clear. If one counts twenty-five in the permanent party and seven men in Warfington’s detachment, nine French boatmen are necessary for the three sergeants and thirty-eight hands. Adding York, one has forty-two men leaving River Dubois with Clark. Other Frenchmen may have been hired at St. Charles, notably Pierre Cruzatte and François Labiche, who became members of the permanent party.

The Corps would await Meriwether Lewis who was in St. Louis attending to some business. Everyone would enjoy themselves for one last time in the village, waiting for the expedition to begin. St. Charles Missouri is celebrating its 250th birthday in 2019. In St. Charles visit the Lewis and Clark Boathouse for an excellent museum that shares the story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and houses reproductions of the Keelboat and the white and red pirogues. By 1808, the Village is of such importance that the U.S. Government would send its U.S. Army to establish Fort Osage, as Sibley and Clark assembled their men here, they would leave on an established road, formerly called the Osage trace (a well traveled road) that left from in front of the former Blanchette’s house. On July 8, 1808 the U.S. Government, from their headquarters at St. Louis at that time had made laws that established roads, and the local village had begun to petition for a road to the west. The small village had grown to become a young City, westward expansion had begun, and on October 10, 1809, the City of St. Charles was Incorporated so that it was able to establish its own laws, survey and sell its land, and govern the village which had grown to nearly a thousand people already.

The Incorporation papers, found in the City of St. Charles Record Book A Page 6 say:“Saint Charles Eighteen Hundred and nine… At a Court of Common Pleas began and held at the village of Saint Charles for the District of St. Charles on Monday the thirteenth day of October in the Year of our Lord one Thousand and Eight Hundred and nine and of the Independence of the United States the thirty fourth.

Signed, Presnt the Hon. Timothy Kibby James Flaugherty Francis Saucier and Robert Spencer In the record and proceedings of said Court we the following viz.

“In conveyence of the Petition of two thirds of the inhabitants of the village and commons of Saint Charles praying the said village may be incorporated. The Court finding then petition to be completely comporting with the laws of this Territory in such laws made and provided have therefore granted the said petition and have accordingly appointed Alexander McNair and Doctor Reynolds Commissioners and that a plat of said village and commons be filed in the Clerks off of this court.”

The War of 1812 began with President Jefferson’s purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1804. Westward expansion, Manifest Destiny, Louisiana Purchase are the same. Quite a deal had been cut because France need-

ed the money. Saint Charles territory stretched northwest of the Missouri River to uncharted lands. After the Corps of Discovery departed that May, the Territory’s trickle of settlement began. We were far outnumbered though, by the Indian tribes as the Territory contained nearly the entire domain of the Sauk and Fox. We lived with the constant fear of attack.

When Sauk and Fox killed several settlers north of Saint Charles, they turned over one of the warriors involved in the incident, with a petition for pardon to Governor Harrison. The result was a Treaty, in 1804, that read,“As long as the lands that are now ceded to the U.S. remain their property, the Indians belonging to the said tribes shall enjoy the privilege of hunting on them.” Some questioned whether the U.S. even really had the right to Treaty as the acquisition was so freshly inked. The land involved included today’s Saint Charles County.

By 1812, we did not know that our young country had just officially gone to war for the first time, with President Madison’s signature. They were totally unaware that the House of Representatives had hotly debated the issue, behind closed doors, ending with the closest vote for war in our Nation’s entire history. For most of the United States, this war would be over the issues of trade embargoes and the capture and forced service of over 10,000 of our men into their British Navy. But for those living here on the frontier, it was the Indian War, and we had been fighting it here for years. The British used the Indian tribes, inciting them to harass and slaughter, because of our expansionist activities. Britain was involved in a fierce struggle with Napoleon in Europe. Our pride would not allow us to ignore these threats to our national honor, that most viewed as a continuation of our war for Independence.

By 1815, the United States would treaty with all tribes, at Portage des Sioux along the Mississippi, including the Osage. “A treaty of peace and friendship, made and concluded between William Clark, Ninian Edwards, and Auguste Chouteau, Commissioners Plenipotentiary of the United States of America, on the part and behalf of the said States, of the one part; and the undersigned King, Chiefs, and Warriors, of the Great and Little Osage Tribes or Nations, on the part and behalf of their said Tribes or Nations, of the other part.”

Auguste Chouteau made the first survey of the village, under order of the Spanish authorities, but the map of the village, has not been preserved, according to Gabriel La Trail, one of the oldest residents of St. Charles in 1824, who said “he assisted in the survey”. He was one of the principal witnesses before Commissioner Hunt testifying as to the ownership and occupancy of many of the lots of the village. Another who helped with the survey was Louis Barrada the Senior. focusOn Magazine | 13

LIFESTYLE CHANGES AFTER THE CRISIS Lessons on Resilience

Times have changed...

For a long time, our idea of “taking care of ourselves” is to get as high of a paying job to earn as much money to be able to buy the nicest car and our dream home, be able to put the kids through college, and retire.

Then COVID happened.

We witnessed jobs melt down. We saw vulnerabilities and failures in existing infrastructures especially our food system. We realized that the world may or may not take care of us and we must make a fundamental shift in our idea of being “responsible for ourselves.”

What fundamental lifestyle changes will make us more resilient in a time of crisis?

Eliminate debt. Being stuck in a debt trap ties up our time and money. We have all heard it before - people being stuck in a job that they hate, to pay for credit card bills from spending on things they do not need, to impress people they do not like. Intentional spending is the answer. Spending money based on our values makes for more enjoyment from, and good relationship with money.

Have an emergency fund. In a time of modern crisis, the single greatest asset that we can have is our cash reserve. It is our first line of defense from financial ruin. Experts recommend keeping between three to six months worth of living expenses in cash to cover unexpected bills or crises. The idea is to have enough to support us in a worst-case scenario such as temporarily losing income.

Practice supply management and reasonable food storage.

Now we have a better idea of the logistics of self-isolation and quarantine. The home being our place of comfort should be able to keep us calm and healthy specially during a time of crisis. Whether by mandate or personal choice, being cooped up in the house for a prolonged period of time is much more manageable if we have basic kitchen skills, know enough recipes and our cupboards are wellstocked with at least the very basics.

What you buy is just as important as how much of it you buy. The general guide to having a resilient pantry and sufficient stock of home supplies is having essentials on hand, and bulking up on cookable items with longer shelf lives. This is not a call for panic-buying.

Keeping a reasonable supply of shelf-stable food and other supplies on hand - before a crisis arises - makes sense for emergencies such as natural disasters and long stretches of unemployment.

Take control of our health by playing a conscious and active role in it. Our health needs may vary but our basic necessities are the same: healthy eating, hydration, physical activity and rest.

The most common chronic degenerative diseases trace back to the toxic food that we eat. Can we imagine what we can save ourselves from if we only stop and simply look at what is on the table and ask ourselves, “How was this prepared?” “Will it truly nourish me?”

Aside from food, we also consume with our other senses. Our consciousness absorbs these consumptions thus the metaphorical question “What’s eating you?” We

must be mindful to avoid filling our mind and heart with negative energies. A resilient mind is a positive one and which will help us focus on hope and visualize better times ahead.

Learn coping skills. Emotional resilience is of utmost importance in navigating the ups and downs of life. It is not necessarily winning the battle, but the strength in powering through the storm while “keeping the sail steady.” The adaptability to stressful situations enables us to “roll with the punches” and come out of adversity without lasting difficulties. Robust emotional awareness and regulation, and strong interpersonal relationships are key. A support network of compassionate people, which we all need in this life, will help us feel less alone in times of need.

Grow food at home. Gone are the days when only those who have acres of land can produce their own food. Growing microgreens, herb and kitchen scrap gardening are relatively easy and can absolutely be accomplished even in urban settings. With much discussions about where our food comes from and what process they go through before they reach our plates, what could be more reassuring than knowing all that went into the food that we put in our body?

It is time we went back to consuming real food. Think about it. If there is a health food section in the grocery store, what does that make the rest of the foods sold there?

Support local. The recent crisis proved how vulnerable we are under the existing food system. How could dairy, produce and other supplies have gone to waste when the demand had in fact surged? The answer is distribution. The current model keeps farmers and manufacturers from getting food and products to people in their community. Our food system should be

redesigned keeping in mind both the individual consumer’s health and the community as a whole.

A resilient community can take care of its own needs and have the ability to absorb, recover and prepare for future economic, environmental, social and institutional shocks. It is time we pushed back from centralized government programs and question monopolistic controls of everything in society that we need such as food, fuel and power.

If the resources are there, why do we have to go the round-about route instead of a more direct access to our needs? You know what they say about “too many hands in the pot.” The perfect example of this is solar power. Sunshine has always been free, there is enough for us all, and the technology to convert that power to electricity has been around for a long time. Prices have dropped to where we can afford solar systems to produce and consume our electricity. The decision to switch to a less-regulated, cleaner and more sustainable energy source is a nobrainer. When irradiation is limited for reasons such as shading, community solar farms prove to be a viable option.

Farm-to-table operations, community-supported agriculture and supporting local manufacturers and producers ensure that we have access to our own goods and services especially when, for one reason or another, the centralized distribution systems fail us. When we support local, supply chains are shorter, fairer and cleaner and we are able to address the priorities of our community members.

This crisis brought about an opportunity for change.

Our old normal failed the stress test. Let us not simply bounce back and revert to our old ways. We now have the chance to build back better, remake the world and adjust our lifestyles based on what we have learned from this crisis.

Businesses everywhere are still feeling the aftermath of nationwide shutdowns. Life isn’t quite like it was before, but is slowly returning back to what can be considered the ‘new normal.’ For local breweries and bottle shops, this includes decreased capacities, canceled events and reservations, online and curbside ordering, and lower sales. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the generous nature that makes St. Charles County a beer community all its own. Businesses and their supporters are taking care of each other, staff, and friends, solely based on one common factor: a love for beer.

For instance, sharing a canning line that might have been sitting still and empty. “When we bought the canning line, we had already planned to make it mobile and make that a side business of the brewery,” said Dave Johnson, co-founder, brewmaster, and chief squeegee operator at Missouri Beer Company. Modifications were made to make the line

mobile through the use of a trailer. Typically for the line to be brought to a business, a minimum run amount needed to be met. “Some of the breweries we have canned for were only able to do a small amount. We pretty much waived that if they bring it to us.”

Johnson helped out smaller, local breweries like Petrichor, After Hours, and 2 Plumbers, but also some bigger names in St. Louis, like Modern, Square One, and Ferguson. In total, 13 different breweries reached out to use the line, and over 4,000 cases (or more than 128,000 cans of beer) were produced.

Third Wheel Brewing kept morale high and brought their weekly events into living rooms across the area. “Online Beer Bingo has by far been the biggest success,” said Brad Wheeling, founder, co-owner, and Chief Beer Stooge. “We have a pretty hardcore group that would come to the brewery every Thursday. It allowed us to all be together in a different way.” Other events have included weekly trivia nights, virtual musical performances by local artists, and a drive-through doggie parade to help get humans and their favorite third wheels out of the house for a bit.

That’s truly amazing.”

We all know the love and care that goes into a well-crafted beer; but that love is apparent more than ever in St. Charles County. Owners, brewers, bartenders, and drinkers have joined forces to support each other. While sales drastically dropped during the shutdown, not a single St. Charles County brewery had to close their doors for good.

Now more than ever, it’s important to support the small companies in our own backyard. So whether you’re picking up curbside, having a socially distanced pint, or dropping off a four-pack to a stranger, make sure to shop small, keep it local, and tip well. And don’t forget to wash your hands.

“It is amazing the number of things that could go wrong all at once,” said Jeff Britton owner of Exit6 Pub and Brewery and creator of the St. Charles Beer it Forward Facebook group. “I needed to smile and I know so many other people felt the same way. What better way to make someone smile than free beer.” After sharing contact information, a surprise care package is dropped off at their front door. While beer is definitely the most common, participants have included pint glasses, handmade signs, frisbees, and even homebrew.

“The creativity and generosity has been amazing.”

Pam Edison, a frequent participant in the group, has dropped off more than ten times. “I think this is a good mixture of a passion for some, a hobby for some, and excitement for others. As I mentioned, people love giving and receiving. I’ve met a lot of awesome people in this group. You just never realize who is out there and who you have things in common with.”

Wedding Planning For The DIYer If you’re planning a wedding right now, there may be a lot of unknowns. Although my daughter and I didn’t have to deal with a pandemic while planning her big day a couple years ago, there are still a few tips we can share that may help when thinking about your future event.

Let’s face it, weddings are expensive–even when you DIY as many of the tasks you’re able to without hiring them out. So where should you begin? In a word: budget! Establish your budget, add a little negotiable overage since something will inevitably pop up, and start a spreadsheet where you can track spending.

If you’re getting married, you likely have an idea of how you want your pictures to look. Begin with venue research but include your photographer search at the same time. It’s so important to do these simultaneously! Especially now when venues and photographers are having to reschedule dates from recent cancelations, these two are the most important things to secure. And before you put a down payment on that ideal place, be sure your photographer has the date available as well. If you’re planning on having a separate videographer too, the same rule applies. But consider the few photographers who offer a combo deal for a budget-friendly solution to the high-ticket item of video.

Next, you may want to jump into all the fun stuff, but first, schedule planning dates. I know that may sound unnecessary, but, trust me, it works. If you’re like me–a mom helping the bride or groom with a DIY wedding–decide to meet for a cup of coffee, get your calendars out, and plan the plan. We had spreadsheets for pretty much everything, and we scheduled times to talk through all the details. If you’re doing this yourself, you can’t underestimate the power of taking time to simply think through it, talk about it, and plan without actually doing any of it.

Delegate. I know we’re calling this DIY, but I think everyone realizes that it takes a village. The people you do life with are the people you can do your wedding planning with, and knowing your limits is essential. So during your planning dates, list all the people you know who can do pretty cool things! Use a night in to invite friends over, listen to music, and share some goodies while sitting around a table with simple tasks for people to do like tying a string around each wedding program, or handwriting name cards for the artist in the bunch.

If you don’t have a Pinterest board so people can easily access the look and feel you’re going for, start one ASAP. It is a great way to gather links people can access directly, if you’re going to ask them to create something you will love! And since we’re not sure how long it will be before life gets back to normal, consider making a basket of supplies, dropping them on your friend’s porch, and video chatting your crafting happy hour.

Then, as you get closer to your date, and things get crossed off your list of to-dos, keep an eye out for changes. If you have your heart set on a certain fresh flower, it could be that the plants didn’t do well that season and you need a substitution. So make sure you schedule a date within your process where you can assess and make changes if needed. Flexibility will keep you and the people around you sane, so taking the time to factor it in from the get-go is essential.

Lastly, and possibly most importantly, take time for selfcare. When planning so many details, it can be easy to forget about yourself. It’s very important to any couple that everyone feel their best. To do that, consider these things: Get plenty of rest. If you’ve planned well in advance, it’ll help with not having to stay up until all hours with last-minute projects. It won’t necessarily prevent not sleeping well, because of the emotions and nerves that come with a big wedding, but a good plan will at least bring you some rest and comfort.

Schedule a manicure. Even if it’s just a clean, natural manicure without any acrylics, treat yourself to a professional. After all of the detailed handmade crafts you’ve likely made, your hands may get dry and tired. A pampered manicure makes a world of difference, so don’t forget to schedule and budget that in, because pictures of the happy couple and those closest to them will inevitably highlight hands.

Take an intentional moment to observe, breathe, and notice everything. This is probably my favorite point. A friend whose children are a few years older than mine gave me this tip, and I am eternally grateful. She told me that on her kids’ wedding days, she’d occasionally step to a corner of the room, taking 30 seconds to breathe in and observe every detail she could in order to create a “forever memory” of that precise moment in the day. My daughter and I both used this technique to etch into our minds the most special moments of a day that flew by as if we hadn’t spent ten months planning.

So, whatever your plan is, don’t forget to make arrangements or a few sessions of self-care, breathe in, and enjoy all the hard work you’ve done.

Restaurants Fight to Survive, and Get Creative in the Process During times of crisis, many folks enjoy the simple pleasures of a good meal, a good drink, or both. During the Covid 19 quarantine, however, many restaurants had to close temporarily, or for good, others had to find new ways to serve the community, and the patrons had new choices on how to enjoy those food and drink options.

Times like this reward those that innovate, create and move humanity forward. It was no different in the restaurant business in St. Charles County. Bemo’s restaurant’s Dave and Colton Bemis streamed a daily fireside chat explaining that night’s dinner special for curbside carryout. The esteemed Stone Soup Cottage created a delivery program that not only allowed people to enjoy Carl McConnell’s exquisite cuisine, you actually got to put the finishing touches on each dish, acting as Carl’s virtual sous chef.

In Wentzville, 909 Public House created a tailgate atmosphere every Sunday with a brunch offering that also featured the live music of Johnny Chase (and some delicious breakfast taquitos). Noto turned to frozen pizzas as an option… and they were really good. I discovered the terrific food being produced by chef Nick Zotos at Upshot coffee because the online menu made it easier to discover items like the innovative and delicious avocado toast with mango.

On the beverage front, new rules allowed take out cocktails and most every Mexican restaurant in the county had Margaritas in every possible shape and size. The Rack House continued their Whiskey Wednesday’s virtually and added virtual wine tastings including wine makers and sommelier’s from around the country.

It seemed like everyone picked up their social media game during the quarantine as well. Recommendations for great carry out, or outdoor dining, were crowd sourced across

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. In fact, one of my new favorite places was discovered because of all of the recommendations, and the carry out from El Mezon that included the Burrito El Mezon and Shrimp Embrujados was delicious and bountiful. We also had the Top Shelf Margarita and Extra Spicy salsa that I highly recommend.

The restaurants also got very astute at utilizing social media to show off their food and drinks. Sugarfire has one of the best Instagram programs out there and led me to go try the Big Muddy for the first time, this brisket and jalapeno sausage sandwich is a disaster to eat and worth every drip down the arm and splatter in the lap.

Now that we have moved to partial openings, it appears that many folks are more comfortable eating outside. Cottleville Wine Seller and Piazza Messina were well positioned to take advantage with expansive outdoor properties offering food and drinks, and other restaurants are looking to expand their outdoor seating where possible.

Sarah Highfill... The Story of an Emergency Room RN’s Experience with COVID 19 Through the years as a firefighter, I’ve often heard people say, “I don’t know how you rush in to burning buildings when everyone else is rushing out.”

Throughout the Corona Virus pandemic, that is exactly what our nurses and other health care providers have been doing. While everyone else was staying home, social distancing, and hiding from the virus, our heroic heath care providers have been in the fire, helping people that have been infected with the virus and putting their own health into jeopardy.

Meet Sarah Highfill, of O’Fallon, MO, who works as an RN in the emergency room of a hospital in St. Louis County. Sarah, a wife and mother of three kids, and was kind enough to give an interview about her experiences with COVID 19. “I was working triage one day in early March. At that time, the health department was sending us people that they suspected to likely have COVID by telling them to just pull up to the same place that ambulances do (EMS bay). It was about 30 minutes before the end of my shift. A car pulls up and they open the door. The daughter gets out and I ask ‘Are you the patient?’ and she replies, ‘No, it’s my mom.’”

“The patient was in the 3rd row seat of a SUV lying down. So I had to get in the car to get her out. She was an elderly lady that put her little arms around me and I remember when she looked at me and I thought, ‘oh my gosh, she is really sick.’ Then I had that moment. I was afraid I was going to get sick, but I felt so much compassion. I said, “You are going to be okay. We are going to take care of you, 32 | focuson Magazine

don’t worry. Then she hugged me and we were check to check while she was coughing.”

“I got her inside, then I came back out to get her daughter’s information because we weren’t allowing visitors, and her daughter said, ‘Hey, I just want to let you know that I tested positive.’ About four days later I was getting ready for work and I started feeling cold and was having a lot of back pain. I was just feeling like crap. I found a thermometer and I registered 100.8. I knew I wasn’t allowed to come to work if my temperature was over 100.4. So, I took it again and registered 100.9. I got tested that day and found out the next night that I had contracted Corona Virus.”

Sarah’s 14 year-old daughter, Ella, woke up the following day with back pain and similar symptoms to what Sarah having. Sarah experienced a waxing and waning of symptoms, such as increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, loss of taste, and burning eyes for 13 days. There were times when she was scared for herself when her symptoms became more severe, but she resisted going to the hospital. Fortunately, Ella was only sick for four days. Even Sarah’s other two children and husband experienced mild symptoms but never got tested. They all quarantined themselves in their home and kept a part as much as possible.

“Knowing I had brought this sickness home to my family was tough. I cried so hard. I felt so guilty.

I tried to be so careful. Every time I came home from work, I changed my clothes in the garage and ran straight to the shower. But I felt guilty be-

fore I got sick, too, because other people didn’t want their kids to be around my kids because they knew I worked in a hospital. My kids were like, ‘Thanks Mom.’ It’s been tough.”

Sarah came to O’Fallon from Arvada, Colorado via Springfield, MO, where she went to college and met her future husband Chris Highfill.

Sarah became an elementary school teacher for eight years in Springfield, but felt a pull to become a nurse after having children. The interactions with labor and delivery nurses inspired Sarah to eventually go back to school to follow her instinct to become a nurse. Chris and Sarah moved to O’Fallon 6 years ago. Chris opened Grace River Church, a non-denominational Christian church, where he works as the pastor and Sarah ended up being drawn to and landing a job in the emergency department.

It was how the labor and delivery nurses made Sarah feel that changed the course of her professional life. When having a baby, the nurse cried with her and made her feel so special through the entire process. Sarah now takes pride in paying back that empathy and kindness by giving her patients and their family members simple gestures of love such as a hug, smile, touch on the shoulder, and the occasional prayer.

Sarah simply has a servant’s heart. Back in December, her brother who lives in Mongolia, described to her the massive amount of illness and death that was occurring in China at that time, Sarah felt an incredible urge to go there and help. Only a few months later, she feels an overwhelming gratitude that she GETS to be on the front line; that she GETS to help people that are suffering here in Missouri. Sarah is also thankful for the virus because it has brought her Emergency Department work team closer to each other like a family; and she is especially thankful because of the slowing of time that has allowed for her actual family to be at home more, spending quality time and bonding together over life’s simplicities like home cooked meals. Sarah said, “I loved, loved, loved having everyone home together. Teaching school at home. Have Chris home. Cooking meals every day. Getting closer to my kids. I’ve also noticed

so many people being kind to each other. I feel like it has helped our country come a little closer together. I’m actually thankful for the Corona Virus.”

For many reasons, as a society, we need more people to think, act, and live like Sarah Highfill.

Her heart of empathy, kindness, and optimism, despite being a nurse that became sick in the line of duty, should be an inspiration and example for us all to emulate.

The “Fast Track” to Health!

Therapeutic fasting, which is the absence of food for a predetermined period of time, has been practiced for thousands of years. In primitive times, it was used during coming of age rituals, religious traditions and as a healing modality. Today, we still advise fasting before major surgery and medical procedures. Fasting may sound like an extreme custom but humans actually practice it very regularly! Unless you are an infant waking up to eat, you fast during the night while you are sleeping. This is where the term breakfast comes from. When you eat your first meal of the day you are essentially “breaking your fast.” In the morning, most people have been without food for an average of 10 hours. Ten hours seems long, but our bodies are actually capable of much longer. Delaying breakfast another hour or two, so that you are eating your first meal 12 hours from the previous meal the night before, is essentially the popular trend, intermittent fasting.

Intermittent fasting is a way in which you eat within a window or block of time. Many people like to adopt a window somewhere between 12-8 hours, depending on what feels comfortable. This means all of your daily meals will fall during that time period. This may result in you eating between the hours of 8am and 8pm for a 12-hour window. If you opt for the very popular eight-hour window, you may eat between the hours of 10am and 6pm.

Why would anyone want to delay eating? The answer has to do with insulin production. Insulin is a hormone our body releases when we eat, unless you are diabetic. Some of the insulin released is used for immediate energy, some we store in our muscles for later use, and rest lands in our fat cells. Unfortunately, as we age insulin production ramps up, making fat loss much more difficult to achieve. High levels of insulin also increase our risk of metabolic disease, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. This is where fasting comes into play. Fasting is one of the very best tools you can use to reduce insulin production. When your body is fasting and insulin is suppressed, you begin to use your own fat for fuel! Another amazing benefit of fasting is a recently discovered phenomenon called “autophagy.” During autophagy, our body begins clearing out damaged cells in order to produce new, healthier cells. Think of it as a self-cleaning system! This process has amazing healing benefits for the body. It has been shown to boost our immune system, balance hormones, lower inflammation, reduce the risk of disease and aid in weight loss. Fasting is essentially empowering our body to heal itself!

Things to know before you begin an intermittent fasting practice: • Always start slow so you can see how your body will respond. Delay your breakfast one hour in the beginning. Once that feels easy, you can try for a second hour. It will take your body time to adjust to this new way of eating.

• Black coffee, plain tea and water is best during the fast. Any flavor or amount of calories will stimulate insulin production and activate hunger signals.

• If you have an existing health condition, check with your doctor before you try intermittent fasting.

• Use an app on your phone for added support, like “LIFE” or “ZERO.”

Search engines and social media dominate the consumer journey today. Businesses strive for visibility in this mobile-driven landscape.

With all of the focus online, we easily forget the necessity of offline marketing.

It’s time to get back to some basics.

What is marketing?

Before we can look at offline marketing, we need to understand what marketing is- and what it isn’t.

To many, the words “marketing” and “advertising” are synonymous. However, there are some key differences we need to know to be effective at either.

Advertising is exposing people to your brand, products, and services. Radio, car wraps, print ads, online banners- these are all advertising.

Marketing is the strategic process of connecting, educating, and building a relationship with your desired audience over time in order to establish trust and loyalty. Marketing is all about relationships.

Marketing isn’t just throwing up a billboard or a website and calling it a day. This isn’t Field of Dreams.

Marketing is about giving people a real, human experience.

Offline Strategies Offline marketing strategies often consist of billboards, employee t-shirts, sponsoring little league teams, etc.

While there is nothing wrong with any of these, if there isn’t a strategy involved, then they will do nothing more than advertise.

Let’s use sponsoring a little league team as an example. How can you turn that from advertising into effective offline marketing? ...Simple. You create an experience.

• If you’re a restaurant, name a menu item after the team and invite them to a special launch event. The kids will feel special, it will create loyalty, and can generate revenue on the spot if they bring friends and family. It also shows otherpatrons that you’re invested into the community.

• An HVAC company can give battery operated fans for the hot summer games with their logo and an encouragingmessage like, “Stay cool, we believe in you!” At the end of the season they can give parents a coupon to get their furnace units checked in the fall and speak of the dangers of carbon monoxide, showing that they truly care for the kids and families. * If you’re a bank, insurance agency, or financial institution, throw a fundraiser for the kids (think bingo night or trivia) and put the money into a scholarship fund for team alumni. Honor the kids at the event and encourage them to invest in their future.

As I mentioned before, your social media should be a mirror of what you’re doing offline.

What’s great about these offline strategies is that every one of them provides the opportunity to create engaging, relevant content online. Facebook events, social posts, and website content will all naturally flow from these offline efforts.

The Key Takeaway Hopefully these examples ignite some inspiration for your own strategy.

At the end of the day, people just want a real, authentic, human connection with the companies they do business with.

If you can create that, you’ll generate loyal customers for life.

Just remember - marketing is about investing in the long-term relationships with your target audience. Those real relationships are cultivated both on and offline. They take time, forethought, and patience. Marketing is a marathon, not a sprint.

10 TIPS FOR ENJOYING SUMMER LIFE WITHOUT SABOTAGING YOUR PROGRESS Summer activities are almost here! I recently did a poll on Facebook and found that everyone DOES want to stay on track over the summer, which is fantastic!

I have put together a list of my top tips for enjoying life, but still staying ontrack with your goals!

1. Start the Day off Right

The morning of an event or holiday can be pretty tough. It’s easy to want to be lazy, and not pay attention to our normal routines. It’s also easy to be too busy to stick to our routines! Instead of throwing out all sense of reason, or allowing yourself to break from your normal routine, be intentional about it! Go for a walk with the family or do a quick workout. Drink your protein shake like you usually do and eat the way you normally eat!

2. Eat All Your Meals

People often assume it’s better to not eat all day until the party meal. Like they are “saving their calories”.

But I’m here to tell ya… that is the WORST thing you can do! Eat your normal amount of meals at the normal times. This will help you keep your blood sugar more stable and also prevent you from getting overly hungry which always leads to overeating.

3. Drink Your Greens

Let’s be honest...the get-togethers are not usually filled with many green veggie options, and when they are, it’s usually covered in sugary dressings, right? This is a good time of year to get a high-quality greens powder and make that part of your daily routine. Personally, I use the brand Amazing Grass, in the berry flavor. Just order on Amazon!

4. Drink Plenty of Water

Remember, half your bodyweight in ounces of water per day is the minimum you should be drinking every day! (So, if you weigh 200 pounds, that’s 100 ounces). Summer break is no exception, and in fact can even be MORE important, because it’s hot, you’re outside more, and therefore, more easily dehydrated. Plus, if you have a party, event, or holiday, staying hydrated is also a great way to prevent overeating!

5. Slow Down

Avoid eating quickly. Give your brain and tummy time to communicate! Taking your time, fully chewing your food, and listening to your body’s cues are all great ways to prevent overeating and feeling stuffed, bloated, and miserable. Allow your body to properly digest the food you are consuming!

6. Limit Alcohol

If you are going to partake in the adult beverages, be intentional about how much you drink. A good rule of thumb when you want to enjoy yourself and festivities, but not ruin all your progress, is no more than 2 drinks. And with those, make sure to also get extra water to account for the rapid dehydration alcohol causes. Limiting your booze will help ensure you still sleep well and don’t feel crappy the next morning, which could lead to a spiral of not working out, not eating right, and so on.

7. Consider Fasting

For healthy individuals, practicing a 12 to 24 hour fast after a day of feasting can be incredibly beneficial.

Fasting allows your body to completely digest and process all the food consumed, and naturally detox. Cell regeneration takes place as well, because your energy can focus on all the other parts of the body, rather than on digesting more food. During the fast, consume lots of water, and you can even sip on bone broth.

You will be amazed at how good you feel!

8. Exercise

If the day of a holiday or event is normally a workout day for you, stick to that schedule! Get your workout done early in the day before everything gets busy and chaotic. This will keep your blood flowing and your body energized for the big day. Likewise, don’t skip your workout the day after the holiday or event either!

Getting a good sweat session after indulging is great for your body!

9. Practice Moderation

There is no need to abstain from all the delicious foods your family serves at the picnic. Don’t be miserable!

Instead, practice moderation. Remember, one or two bites of each dish allows you to participate and enjoy the flavors, without going crazy and overeating. If you want to go back for seconds, and you are honestly still hungry and not just going back “because it’s there and yummy”, then get seconds! Just practice the same guideline of 1-2 bites per dish and stop eating when you’re full.

10. Dessert

Ah yes...desserts. There are so many good ones! Practice moderation here as well. There is no need to sample a large piece of every dessert! Pick something, have a small serving, and be done! However, if you know you won’t be able to control yourself and stop after a couple of bites, then it may be wise to skip dessert all together.

And there you have it! All my best tips for staying on track over the coming days of parties, holidays, and other events! Ultimately, the decision is yours. You have to decide that you want to still be successful, even through all the glorious festivities. It is 100% possible to stay on track and still enjoy yourself! Will you be the person that uses the summer break as an excuse to go crazy? Or will you use it as a chance to prove what you are capable of?

DEA Launches a Brand New WithYouSTL.com Website Addressing Community Needs Due to Challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Opioid Crisis

It can be very difficult to know where to turn when faced with substance use disorders. Social distancing and isolation throughout this COVID-19 pandemic led to increased substance use, experimentation and even relapse. Individuals seeking resources for themselves or their loved ones were finding it more and more difficult to locate help.

The Drug Enforcement Administration St. Louis Division, along with community partners, recognized this problem. Special Agent in Charge William Callahan, head of the DEA St. Louis Division covering Missouri, Kansas and southern Illinois says, “We heard all these groups talk about how they were transforming for the times, but it was Ellis and Patti Fitzwalter (H.E.A.L.: Stop Heroin, Inc.) who reminded us that, pandemic or not, when people are living through the nightmare of a loved one suffering from substance use disorder, they don’t know where to turn,” Callahan added. “It was in that moment we decided to bring all these great community resources under one banner. We had the means to help our community, and that’s exactly what we did by creating WithYouSTL.com.”

OZARK

NETFLIX SERIES REVIEW with Keith Thomas

Starring: Jason Bateman, Laura Linney a Netflix Original Series Ozark is a Netflix original series created by Bill Dubuque, which premiered in 2017 and has released 3 seasons to date. Before Ozark, Bill Dubuque was best known as the screenwriter for the movies, The Accountant, A Family Man, and The Judge. He was born in St. Louis and worked in the Ozarks at the Alhonna Resort in the 80s. He developed a fascination for the resort that eventually inspired him for the setting of the show.

A few things drew my attention to Ozark. It was hyped as the Breaking Bad of the money laundering world. On the surface they are similar. A nice guy turns to a criminal life to support his family and then would do anything to keep them safe. It stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney both remarkable actors. Neither one wanted to jump back into a television series but found the chance to work with each other and the script to enticing. Then there was the title Ozark. A show set in the heart of Missouri’s most famous lake. Although the show is filmed in Georgia, there are aerial shots of the Lake of the Ozarks throughout the episodes and many references to lake attractions, such as the famous Party Cove.

The Byrde’s, who are the focus family, are your typical Midwest family living in Chicago until the dad, Marty, was contacted by Del, a man wanting to hire Marty as a financial advisor. After reviewing the books, Marty realized Del worked for the cartel and wanted him to launder their money. Marty was hesitant at first until Del sends Marty and his wife Wendy on a remarkable weekend getaway. The two then agreed to do it. At first all is good but things go wrong when Marty’s business partner steals from the cartel, which sends Del after them. Marty saves his family by convincing

the cartel they could move to the Ozarks and launder money there. So the Byrde’s moved from Chicago to the Ozarks. They left on the run with an already struggling marriage, which only gets worse. Their 15-year-old daughter was forced to leave her friends to move to a rural area that she wants no part of.

Their young son, a smart but introverted child, questions everything. Soon the Byrde’s find out, they did not move alone. The FBI and the cartel decided to join them.

Upon the Byrde’s arrival, it didn’t take long for many interesting characters to be introduced. The first being Buddy. Wendy found a great house to buy, but with one BIG catch. Buddy, the terminally ill owner, would continue living in the basement for the remaining few months of his life.

When searching for laundering locations, Marty met Rachel, the struggling owner of the Blue Cat Lodge and Marina. He became Rachel’s angel investor and the laundering began. Marty soon realized the lodge wasn’t enough, so soon set up shop in a strip club and construction business.

Living in the Ozarks the Byrdes came into contact with many “interesting” families. The Langmores are a small-time criminal family who become involved in many of the twisting plots. Ruth Langmore becomes one of the strongest characters. She is cunning, intelligent, strong-willed, and builds a love-hate business relationship with Marty.

The Snells are a well-respected and long-established family that runs a sizable heroin distribution network in the area. Marty’s work with the cartel leads him to a strip club that the Snells also use for their illegal activities, so spoiler alert, they do not become friends.

The Byrde’s are constantly juggling the cartel, money laundering, FBI, and all the crazies in this town. Ozark has it all!

Shocking deaths, dark humor, and enough suspense to keep you entirely engrossed. The series always has you guessing what’s coming next, but you will seldom be right. All the characters in this article appear in Season 1. Many more fascinating players are introduced in Season 2 and 3, but I am not covering those seasons at the risk of spoiling any surprising twists.
