TAFE STUDENTS SHOOT VAMPIRES

f you’ve driven past the Port Macquarie TAFE Campus late at night and seen vampires in the car park, don’t be alarmed; it’s just the shortfilm and makeup students honing their creative talents. An exciting collaboration has been sparked, with the Certificate IV in Digital Media students enlisting the Diploma of Specialist Make-up Services students to provide high-tech make-up support for their short film shoots. Digital media teacher Todd Millerd was excited that his students could make their films as realistic as possible. “We do a lot of shooting at night, so that we can control the light, and we did some vampire shoots in the bottom car park that probably looked a bit dodgy to people driving past,” Todd says.

Our courses are backed by hands-on learning in your chosen field, experienced lecturers, and the support you need to succeed.

“The students do all the work for the films, they write a script and a screenplay, create a storyboard and then there’s the shooting, and that’s a lot of fun. We capture the high-definition video and audio, and then there is the post-production sound and special effects. It’s quite a process, but it’s a lot of fun. the film shoot was a great opportunity for her students.

“This year’s shoot was the first time we’ve had makeup artists on board, and they were fantastic. It made our films a lot more realistic, and it was like a real job for the makeup artists.” Specialist makeup teacher Belinda Balding has 15 years’ experience as a freelance film and TV makeup artist under her belt, and she agrees

“With specialist makeup, it’s not just about a pretty face; you are creating real characters for film and TV, so it becomes more of an artistic pursuit and less about beauty.”
