The FOCAL Awards 2024 Host: Lucy Porter

Described as ‘charmingly effervescent’, Lucy Porter is a comedian whose bright and friendly persona can win over any audience. With a disarmingly warm and chatty style Lucy delivers her thoughts and observations on life, love and how odd the world can be like a longstanding and sometimes indiscreet friend.

Lucy has gathered a strong following and excellent reputation on the live circuit, and her Edinburgh shows are invariably a sell-out. Also at Edinburgh and away from comedy, Lucy starred alongside Christian Slater in the stage version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

A finalist on Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny?, Lucy is a regular on Radio 4 panel and comedy shows, and has also appeared a number of times on Have I Got News For You and Mock the Week. She has also appeared on Newsnight, The Culture Show, and Richard Osman’s House of Games, and has written for Johnny Vaughan, Adam and Joe, and Jimmy Tarbuck.

Lucy is a keen amateur quizzer, having won Celebrity Mastermind and The Chase. She has also appeared on Impossible, Fifteen to One, The Weakest Link and Pointless raising money for charities including Children in Need, the Loss Foundation and Carers UK.

Lucy also presents the quizzing podcast Fingers on Buzzers alongside The Chase’s Jenny Ryan.

A message from FOCAL:

Welcome to the 21st annual FOCAL International Awards.

The Awards are dedicated to the promotion and celebration of archival footage and its contribution to the creative and cultural industries. It endeavours to recognise archive and preservation professionals alongside acknowledging the entertainment, educational and illuminating impact of archival storytelling. Over the years we have seen a growth in archive-driven productions which is evident in the increase of submissions entries since its inception in 2004. This evening, we are honouring 64 shortlisted nominees across 16 award categories which goes to illustrate the versatility and undeniable value of archive footage in productions, whether in the form of branded content or a cinematic feature.

We would like to thank all our professional and student jurors who spent hours viewing and deliberating over the outstanding submissions. A huge thank you to all our 19 sponsors, without your support we would not be able to hold the Awards. Lastly, not forgetting the volunteers and committee members who gave up their time to help us prepare for tonight’s event.

We hope you enjoy this evening – the annual FOCAL International Awards competition and ceremony is a celebration of your work.

Thank you to the Jurors:

The FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award 2024: Eric Kulberg

The FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award is gifted by the FOCAL International executive board to an individual who has contributed to and supported the audio-visual archive industry within their career and through the body of their work.

We are delighted to announce the 2024 recipient is Eric Kulberg.

Eric has been working in the media industry since early 1960s; within the music documentary field from licensing, research, producing to establishing Universal Media Inc., with John Paige.

Eric’s introduction to television came with his first position at KTVA, the CBS affiliate in Anchorage, Alaska. Following a scholarship to attend American University majoring Broadcasting & Communications with minors in Musicology, Art History and Marketing/ Advertising he went on to work at WTTG for 8 years undertaking roles as a producer, director, production manager to feature film buyer for the programming department.

Through the mid-70s to mid-80s he produced programming for domestic and international outlets as well as directed and edited hundreds of commercials and political advertisements, including the Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter Presidential campaigns, as well as Executive Producer on 1982 Reggae Sunsplash in Jamica.

In 1985, he and John Paige started Universal Media Inc., producing programming for the National Park Service and EPA. Undertaking their first clearance work for CBS’ West 57th they continued to clear music, footage, photos and guilds, not only for documentaries, but feature film playbacks and for footage used in Time Life Infomercials for 27 years. In addition, from 1986 Eric was the music and archival consultant for the Kennedy Center Honors film unit lasting 28 years.

Eric produced the award winning documentary The Night James Brown Saved Boston co-produced with David Leaf, as well as worked on many highly noted productions such as Whiplash; Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things; The U.S. vs John Lennon; and When I Fall in Love: The One & Only Nat King Cole.

In the world of photography, he has had photo exhibitions at the Historical Society of Washington of his attendance at the March on Washington in 1963.

Anyone who has worked with Eric knows how special he is as an archivist, He knows where the Lost Ark is. Finds footage that nobody else can. Find the right footage or photo for every moment in a film. I am so proud to not just call Eric my friend, but that he’s truly one of my best friends.

David Leaf
“ “

I’ve known Eric for many years. I’m not sure when we first met, but it was probably around 1994. The company I worked for was purchased by Time Life Music and I became VP of Product Development at Time Life Music and was heavily involved in creating many of their long form 30-minute infomercials promoting music from different genres and different decades. Someone, and I don’t remember who, told me about this person, Eric Kulberg who was an expert at finding footage of different artists. This is an understatement. Eric would constantly find and help us license footage that frankly I don’t think anybody else knew existed. I can say without question, one of the reason’s Time Life Music was so successful in its time was because of Eric and his contributions to the look of our infomercials. We would get calls from customers who would ask us if they could buy the infomercial. We would have very famous artists, and I won’t name names, who would contact us and ask us where we found particular clips of footage. Coincidentally, Eric and I lived in the same neighborhood, and from time to time, I would stop at Eric’s house, and he would always have something interesting to show me, or something to listen to. Eric is one of the nicest and most generous people I know. I could not be more happy for him in receiving this award.

Eugene Zacharewicz
“ “

Eric Kulberg has advocated for safeguarding our field through his early pioneer days and extensive career and body of work. Exploring all corners of audiovisual content and other mediums, he is the definition of a trailblazer, and we are so pleased to be able to honour Eric with this prestigious award for his outstanding contribution and dedication to the audiovisual industry.

Best Archival Restoration & Preservation Project

or Title

Production Company: R3store Studios Ltd

Archival Highlights: The biggest challenge with this film was the grade as the 70mm film was extremally faded to red which happens with certain film stocks over time. However as you will see, the lights coming from the side of the stage were also red so it was very difficult to try to take out the red in the film but still retain the red that was coming off the lights. The film was very sparkly and had some scratches within it. Removing scratches where there is a lot of movement is very difficult also.

LA GRANDE PASSION

Production Company: TransPerfect Media France / CNC

Archival Highlights: This is the first digital restoration of the film, which has remained unseen for years because of a lack of screening material. The only surviving source material used for this restoration was the original nitrate black and white negative (7 x 300 meters reels), stored at the CNC (French National archive). The technical challenges faced to make a 4K restoration from a very damaged single source material added to the complexity of the restoration.

The Village / Unser Dorf

Production Company: Cinémathèque suisse

Archival Highlights: The restoration is the result of extensive preliminary work to identify and analyse all the film elements - over a hundred reels - deposited for this title at the Cinémathèque suisse by the Praesens-Films production company. Together with a meticulous study of the production’s papers archive and press cuttings from the time, also kept at the Cinémathèque, it was possible to reconstruct a large part of the film’s production history and to understand that there were two original versions from the very beginning : THE VILLAGE, technically of better quality, intended for the international market and presented at Cannes in 1953; and UNSER DORF, intended for the Swiss market, very similar to the first, but slightly longer and with around 20% of shots slightly different.

The Complete and Utter History of Britain

Production Company: R3store Studios Ltd

Archival Highlights: The original elements were lost on this project and the only surviving elements were16mm telerecording reels. All 16mm reels were scanned to 2K DPX and WAV on the Scanity Scanner. Restoring telerecordings requires much more manual intervention than a standard restoration due to burnt in tape faults, as well as film faults. Therefore the amount of manual work needed on this project was far higher due to the level of damage that the automated processes couldn’t fix.

RAIN. DOESN’T. CARE.

The film acts as an ode to rain, taking an unusual angle on sports betting and the impact weather plays and its indifference to the outcome.

The TVC explores how inclement weather might impact the outcome of a sporting event whether its horse-racing, F1 or football. While rain doesn’t care about who is playing what, the person placing the bet should care and that’s “why they should choose wisely.”

Footage Person of the Year

The recipient is an individual member of staff working for a library, archive, or facility company, which is a member of FOCAL International, whether client-facing or internal support, and who, over the past year, has shown outstanding achievement, skills and/or dedication to their role.

Yannis Dubois

Archive Producer and Teacher, Le Chaînon Manquant

LE CHAINON MANQUANT is a French company founded in 1992, dedicated to the research and clearance of additional content, whether for documentaries, fiction, advertising, exhibitions, etc.

I know that doing this job within a company rather than on a freelance basis is rather strange, but it has enabled me to work on some particularly numerous and challenging projects: documentary series for platforms, dramas awarded at the Cannes Film Festival or the César Awards, commercials for international brands, and so on. It was a rich learning experience!

Lucy Francis

Sales Support Manager, Motion Gallery, BBC Studios

Lucy Francis, Motion Gallery’s Sales Support Manager, envisioned a digital workflow that would facilitate clients being able to carry out self-research and view digitised programmes on our VIDA library platform, select clips and submit them for approval. This could be achieved without clients contacting our sales team. To accomplish this Lucy brought together key stakeholders from Getty Images, Visual Data Media Services and Motion Gallery. Lucy laid out the benefits that this workflow would bring, minimising admin and increasing efficiency for clients, vital in an industry with very tight deadlines, whilst also reducing technical fees in a time of budgetary pressures.

Brian Sargent

Managing Director, Fox Archive

Brian and his team are extremely responsive and so fun to work with. They always have the most unique material, and Brian knows the collection extremely well. Even more, if he doesn’t have something I’m looking for, he will prioritize digitization of what I need. It’s so helpful, and it leads to unique and interesting footage. Brian also will work with projects, understanding our limitations while also showing extreme reverence for his vast archive and the enormous work they are doing. He understands the value of what they are doing for our community, but they also have reverence for the projects they help.

Company of the Year

This award is an opportunity for the industry to recognise the endeavours of a company within the audio-visual industry, who is a FOCAL International member, that has introduced a new service, initiative or improvement in thepast year to benefit the industry. Sponsored By:

Prasad

We are motivated by the tremendous strides our team has taken in establishing 8K as a cutting-edge service offering in the Indian market. Worldwide, 8K has not become mainstream yet. But in India, we strongly believed that we could crack this puzzle. It was just not about taking this service to market but a major operation struggle to scan at 8K. We faced technical issues, issues, challenges relating to scanning, film compatibility, and data storage. The Prasad team had to constantly innovate and bring in several improvements to the hardware and software to optimize performance.

Prasad physically restore and prepare deteriorating cultural and historical treasures to be ‘preserved4posterity™’. This is probably one of the largest Analog Film Restoration and Preventive Conservation project executed in the world. The ambitious project involved restoring approximately 60,000 reels, which accounted for about one-third of the archive’s inventory. To achieve this, a combination of technologies, processes, and innovative thinking was employed on a large scale.

Getty Images

The EMEA Broadcast and Production team supported over 1,800 film and TV productions in 2023 across a variety of factual and scripted genres.

Getty Images offer key services to customers including Proof of Concept - free, content research feeding video and stills findings from our libraries back to customers. This service was used extensively in 2023, helping shape the viability or direction of over 3,000 projects. To help deliver on the Getty Images mission of “keeping the customer at the heart of everything we do” an Advisory Group of notable, experienced archive researchers was created. This group ensures Getty Images continue to listen to what customers need and to provide the enhancements and improvements they request into the future.

September 2023 saw the re-launch of the much-improved VIDA platform collaboration between Getty Images and BBC Studios, giving access to BBC archive video and a new seamless search, purchase and download experience. The improved platform has met with overwhelmingly positive customer reaction, and to help onboarding, Getty Images ran an extensive VIDA webinar and various support activities.

Kinolibrary

Kinolibrary is the perfect combination of the key facets exhibited by the best archive companies. Crucially, they have excellent material that is unique, high quality and easily accessible but they are also a lovely group of people offering excellent boutique service in their research, sales and in representing film-makers and licensors. They have also brought new talent into the industry who have since gone on to successful careers in production. I can’t think of another company that compares in such an allround contribution to our sector.

In 2023, Kinolibrary released a new website providing users with more visibility on the collections that Kinolibrary hold. The site was built and designed with direct input from archive researchers and producers and provides a searchable database of curated clips from across the Kinolibrary collections.

Jane Mercer Researcher of the Year

The recipient is an individual Footage Researcher (or team), who has demonstrated outstanding achievement whilst being primarily responsible for the footage research undertaken for a production. The award is named in honour of Jane Mercer, former FOCAL International Chair and Archive Researcher.

Stephen Maier for Stasi FC

Production Company: Corso Film

Information on each nominee is provided by the production company. Sponsored By:

Apart from interviews, “Stasi FC” consists almost exclusively of archive material. In his role as archive producer, Stephen therefore had a key position in this project. Without his knowledge of GDR film sources, his passion for research and his tenacity in clearing rights and negotiating prices, the project would not have been possible. Important film footage and photos, which are central to the story of the film, could only be used because Stephen did everything he could to fulfil the director’s wishes.

Kyle Gibbon for The Stones and Brian Jones

Production Company: Lafayette Film

Kyle not only Produced this film but also undertook all of the archive research and clearance. Kyle has always had a natural talent for archive and in the ten or so years we have worked together we have made several archive feature films including Whitney: Can I Be Me, Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love (Focal winner), My Father and Me, and this latest film The Stones and Brian Jones.

Jackie Clary for Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie

Production Company: Apple Original Films, Concordia Studio

Jackie was the engine behind Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. It’s a film that is predominantly made of archival footage. Jackie is a rare treasure and a treat. She works like crazy to get what is requested and thinks gigantically out-of-the-box to get the best possible plus options. Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie would not be the beloved and award-winning film that it is today without Jackie Clary.

Molly Rokosz for The Pigeon Tunnel

Production Company: Apple Original Films, Ink Factory

To bring these moments to life and create a concoction for the audience like the one in John le Carré’s brain, I turned to archival producer Molly Rokosz for help. Molly unearthed television programs featuring le Carré during his rise to fame, allowing the audience to experience what he was like as a young man. The archival footage for The Pigeon Tunnel is essential to helping the audience look into the past and understand where artistic inspiration is born. The fruits of Molly Rokosz’s archival research on this project enabled me to recreate a version of John le Carré’s mind’s eye and to illustrate his creative process, giving viewers unique insight into the workings of a literary wonder.

Helen R. Russell for Bill Russell: Legend

Production Company: High Five Productions, LLC

Helen tirelessly uncovered footage from his college years at the University of San Francisco through his tenure as a Boston Celtic and beyond as a coach, commentator, and television personality. She found never before seen home movies of the Celtics off the court at one of the player’s homes that said a lot about the team’s camaraderie and Bill’s close relationship with his teammates, and poignant audio from a town dinner to honor the Russell family that happened a short time before his home would be ransacked in that same neighborhood.
