FROM OUR CHAIR Dear Colleagues, Welcome to this edition of The FOBISIAN. It is indeed an honour for me, as the new Chair of FOBISIA, to make a contribution to this magazine. I have been involved with FOBISIA since 1993 when I was Deputy Principal at St. Christopher’s International Primary School in Penang, and have held senior leadership roles in five different FOBISIA schools up to the present. I am looking forward to contributing constructively to the Federation over the next couple of years and I am pleased that we have such a dedicated Board and hard working group of people at FOBISIA HQ. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the previous Chair, Mr Simon Mann, for his dedication and hard work in ensuring that FOBISIA continues to develop and move forward. The Federation is growing very quickly and we are, as ever, determined to continue supporting our family of Member Schools to the best of our ability.

Activities and events organised by FOBISIA continue to be successful. We recently hosted a number of Primary Games at our facility in Phuket and I have heard extremely positive remarks about each event. Our CPD for staff hosted by our Member Schools continues to be of the highest standard with some outstanding JAWS taking place this year. In November, we can look forward to our 3rd Biennial Teaching Community Conference, which is being hosted by St. Christopher’s International Primary School, Penang.

I am extremely pleased to recognise the appointment of our first CEO. Mr John Gwyn Jones will commence his role in August 2019 and brings with him a wealth of knowledge about education and FOBISIA. John was appointed Principal of St. Christopher’s International Primary School in August 1991. During this time, John became an active member of FOBISIA and was appointed as the first Chairman of the Federation. As a result, he has a wealth of knowledge of international schools in South and East Asia.

John retired at the end of the 2013/2014 Academic Year (July 2014), after dedicating more than 23 loyal years of service to St. Christopher’s. In August 2014, John took on a new leadership/consultancy position as Director of Development and Deputy Director of the Panyathip International Group of Schools in Laos. I am convinced that John will bring a great deal to his new role as CEO. I would like to wish all our Member Schools a productive and positive end to the academic year and look forward to FOBISIA going from strength to strength in the coming years.

HQ HAPPENINGS Dear Members,

As the academic year comes to a close, we begin to reflect on what we have achieved in 2018-19. This year 100+ Student Events and 50+ CPD Events were hosted around the region by our Member Schools. It takes a significant amount of time and effort to host these events, so a huge thank you to the Member Schools that opened their doors and championed our offerings this year, including their amazing support staff. We hope that you agree that hosting these events is incredibly rewarding for all involved. Thank you too to Sports Camps Australia for delivering another successful year of The Friendly Games in Phuket, Thailand this year. All of our events, whether they be leader, teacher, staff or student focused, are designed with one purpose in mind, to enrich student learning.

We also celebrated 30 years of FOBISIA at our 26th Annual Leadership Conference - Leading Inclusively in Bangkok in November, where an outstanding cast of keynote speakers and senior leaders stepped up to the podium to share their practice.

Planning for our 27th Annual Leadership Conference - Activating Learning is well under way. The conference will be held this November at the Sheraton Grand Macao Hotel, Cotai Central. We have secured an exciting range of keynote speakers and a quality line-up of senior leaders is building. Details will continue to be released on our website. We are once again going paperless via our Whova app which has proven to be popular among delegates and exhibitors over the last two years providing live updates and greater delegate connectivity.

Our 3rd Biennial Teaching Community Conference - FOBISIA Shares will follow our Leadership Conference this year. It will be hosted at St. Christopher’s International Primary School in Penang. The programme has been specifically tailored to provide engaging professional development opportunities for both teachers and teaching assistants, including dedicated workshops delivered by the team at The TA College.

Our draft Calendar of Events for 2019/20 has just been released, and it will be posted on our website shortly. The final calendar will be made available prior to the end of this term.

As well as a new Events Executive, we will be welcoming our very first CEO, Mr. John Gwyn Jones, as well as a dedicated part-time Administrator. As FOBISIA continues to grow, HQ remains committed to ensuring it has the capacity necessary to maintain a high standard of support to the membership.

Wishing you all the very best for a fun and safe holiday; I hope you all enjoy a welldeserved break. Our HQ team has worked very hard this year and will also be taking a break in July. We look forward to returning refreshed and ready to serve the membership in the new academic year.

Welcome to the last issue of THE FOBISIAN for the 2018-19 Academic Year! THE FOBISIAN is FOBISIA’s termly eNewsletter for sharing events and other FOBISIA news among the membership.

This issue features a special farewell to respected school leader and long-time FOBISIA advocate, Ann McDonald, who is retiring from her role as Principal at Kellett School Hong Kong at the end of 2018-19.

Ann has been instrumental in shaping the direction of FOBISIA since 1996.

We hear about an inspiring student project at another of our Member Schools which is fostering international mindedness in students.

FAREWELLING RESPECTED LEADER & FOBISIA ADVOCATE Ann McDonald — Kellett School Hong Kong

Siobhan Bland, Editor of THE FOBISIAN, talks to Ann McDonald about her 23 years leading Kellett School and her passion for FOBISIA. Where did your teaching journey begin and how did you find yourself at Kellett School Hong Kong?

I grew up in Gloucestershire in the UK and trained as a teacher. After spending a year with Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) in Nigeria, I returned to the UK and worked at a primary school. I first moved to Hong Kong in 1979 where I worked at Stanley Fort School, teaching children whose parents were in the British Armed Forces. After a few years back in the UK, I took up my post at Kellett School Hong Kong in 1996, where I have been until now!

How long have you been involved with FOBISIA? My involvement with FOBISIA started when I became Principal of Kellett 23 years ago. The school was already a member, but I did already know of the organisation.

What role did FOBISIA play in supporting your leadership at Kellett School?

Over the years I have met many extraordinary heads through FOBISIA. I have been able to pick their brains, learn from their successes, and the odd mistake,

and seek advice from some remarkable educators at FOBISIA conferences around the region.

These opportunities have been invaluable to my leadership.

How did Kellett benefit from its membership of FOBISIA? It’s difficult to put into words how beneficial it has been to be a member of FOBISIA, as there really are so many. The opportunities for students to further themselves in sports, music or the performing arts, as well as travel and create friendships is priceless. The professional development and networking opportunities for staff have also been very beneficial.

Personally, having a wealth of experience and information at my fingertips has been wonderful. On numerous occasions I have been able to call upon the expertise of someone who I’ve met through FOBISIA for advice.

What are your most memorable FOBISIA moments?

One of the most memorable moments for me was the very first FOBISIA Leadership Conference (then known as the Heads' Conference) in Kathmandu. It

felt like we were literally on top of the world at The British School Kathmandu which overlooked Mount Everest. I believe it was also the first time FOBISIA had ventured outside of Southeast Asia.

Another memorable moment was when British international schools in China were admitted to FOBISIA, and of course, the first time we hosted the Friendly Games. It was a little manic, as the Educational Bureau in Hong Kong decided to close schools due to an outbreak of swine flu and a teacher was quarantined. The games continued however, as we figured the children would be better off running outside than being stuck in a hotel!

What do you cherish most about FOBISIA? I cherish the personal and professional friendships that I have formed over the years as well as the myriad of opportunities that have helped Kellett to thrive.

FOSTERING INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS IN STUDENTS Students at The English School of Mongolia had a vision to make a change in the world and help communities in Malawi, Africa to access clean drinking water.

Founded in 2011 as an independent international school, The English School of Mongolia (ESM) is now accredited by Cambridge Examinations. It was awarded with International Baccalaureate World Status in 2015 for its Diploma Programme, having been considered for the award of candidate school status for the Primary Years Programme (PYP). ESM is the only FOBISIA Member School in Mongolia serving the educational needs of students aged 3-17.

With a rigorous, research and inquiry based curriculum, ESM sees its teachers, students and leaders as the core of its programme. As a result, students become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them.

The social projects and the impact the students might have globally is taken as priority and the curriculum is developed around "International Mindedness" and ensuring that the students who study at ESM are not just learners, but impactful citizens of the world.

In Term 3, Grade 4 started its inquiry into major problems in Africa, finding out that many people there struggle to access clean water, which leads them to suffer from a range of waterborne diseases. Mothers cannot secure decent jobs because they need to walk six kilometres every day to fetch water. Crops don’t grow, so they do not have enough food or money. Children cannot attend school because either their family cannot afford to send them or they are sick. With the encouragement of

their homeroom teacher, Ms. Kim, the students came up with the idea to make a real impact at the local level in these communities. They wanted to act locally and ultimately have a global impact, so the students started looking for opportunities to help people in Africa to develop sustainable water sources and minimise the health risks associated with consuming contaminated water.

With their vision in mind, they started researching organisations that may be able to help these people. The students discovered that Water Wells for Africa (WWFA) was in fact already helping people to access clean drinking water.

The students contacted WWFA who were enthusiastic about supporting ESM's project in Malawi. The Grade 4 students engaged the whole ESM

community to support their vision to make a change in the world.

The Grade 4 students initiated a fundraising project selling donated toys, books and even their own works of art. Parents were also encouraged to get involved in the fundraising efforts.

Upon relfection, the students decided that one of the most rewarding parts of the project was the work they put into raising awareness leading up to the fundraiser. They had researched what the greatest needs were, and identified where they could have most impact. They submitted their proposal for action to the school office, with clear reasoning as to why they wanted the project to be a success. The students had the belief that they needed to be actively doing something to save the world, and especially those who needed their support.

Through their enthusiastic fundraising efforts, the students raised £350 for the Water Wells for Africa Project, which was enough money to save Ling’ande Village (in Ngokwe, Machinga), and provide them with a safe water source. These kinds of projects allow students to be better connected with the world around them, to realise their responsibilities as global citizens, and that they can have a powerful impact, even at their young age. They felt extremely proud that their actions made a difference to the Ling’ande community, and now they are inspired to do even bigger and better things!

Our role as educators is to provide opportunities for students to experience such learning which would ensure this kind of action happens as a result.

VALUING SPORTSMANSHIP & HEALTHY COMPETITION The Friendly Games provide a safe environment with equal participation for boys and girls and opportunities to experience good sportsmanship, the value of healthy competition and reap the rewards of training.

Students from Jerudong International School (JIS) in Brunei travelled to attend the Primary Games (Blue Group) in beautiful Phuket from 12 - 16 May 2019. It was a highly successful trip with 39 incredibly excited students and six teachers representing the school. The students had trained for three months across four different sporting disciplines, including Swimming, Athletics, Tee-Ball and Football.

this made for a really competitive sporting environment with medals at a premium. Joining JIS in the Blue Group were Garden International School Kuala Lumpur, The International School @ Park City, St. Christopher's International Primary School, Harrow International School Beijing, Wellington College International Shanghai, Dulwich College Seoul and The British International School Shanghai, Puxi.

achieving personal best times and many of them performing well enough to earn medals to reward their efforts. The team made lots of new friends from different schools and are now eager to prepare for the next one. Overall it was a tremendous weekend of sporting competition, friendship and cultural experience.

WORLD-CLASS VENUE FOR BIGGEST EVER GOLF INVITATIONAL Sports Invitationals provide an opportunity for Member Schools to host sporting events, including golf, swimming, tennis, gymnastics and sailing, with the option of inviting non-Member Schools to participate.

This year’s FOBISIA Golf Invitational, hosted

by Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, returned to the stunning Black Mountain Golf Club, Hua Hin in Thailand in March. A record 120 competitors from 20 different schools came together to compete over 36 holes at the prestigious European Tour venue.

Shrewsbury’s young superstar, TK, shot a valiant nine under par to win his flight (Flight C) and lowest male gross score, however this was not enough to defend his overall championship title, which was won in stunning fashion by 10-year-old Eidan from Garden International School, Kuala Lumpur, who shot a magnificent 13 under par.

In another promising sign for the future of the sport, the Female Championship title was won by Penguin from Harrow International School, Bangkok, whose ice-cold performance saw her finish on two under. In addition to her individual trophy, Penguin’s efforts also helped Harrow International School Bangkok to both the Female Team Award, and the Overall Team Award, in what turned out to be a very successful week for the Lions.

They were pushed all the way through a hugely competitive and thrilling final day’s golf by the team from Bromsgrove International School, Thailand who finished a close second, and Bangkok Patana School, who finished third. The boys from Garden International School, Kuala Lumpur, assisted by Eidan, won the Male

Team Award. The hosts can celebrate some notable individual success too though, with Vicki winning the Flight A Girls competition, and Doln taking second place in the Flight A Boys.

Shrewsbury, meanwhile, can reflect on a job well done in hosting another very successful tournament in a truly world-class venue. GYMNASTICS INVITATIONAL PROMOTES TEAMWORK Sports Invitationals provide an opportunity for Member Schools to host sporting events, including golf, swimming, tennis, gymnastics and sailing, with the option of inviting non-Member Schools to participate.

In January, Dulwich College (Singapore) (DCSG) sent a team of young gymnasts to the annual FOBISIA Gymnastics Invitational held at Harrow International School in Bangkok. Over 400 gymnasts took part from 19 schools across six different countries. This is the second year

that Dulwich College (Singapore) has entered and 2019 saw us take 30 students ranging from Years 3 to 9.

The gymnastics programme at DCSG has grown immensely since our opening five years ago.

It is a very popular sport here and our facilities and teaching

staff provide the students with an excellent framework to develop their technical skills, flexibility and strength required for this demanding sport.

with much excitement, as well as a few nerves, as for some this was their very first overseas trip without parents. The event gives students the opportunity to perform on uneven bars, beam, vault and execute well-rehearsed routines on the floor against other students from FOBISIA Member Schools.

Harrow has a fantastic double gym where the competition for both boys and girls was held over the weekend. Level 2 – 4 gymnasts performed on the first day with Level 6 and above showing off their skills the following day.

Gymnastics is often seen as an individual sport but at DCSG we are keen to promote the values of teamwork and we think it is important that the younger students have the opportunity to support, watch and learn from our more experienced gymnasts.

RECONNECTING WITH NATURE IN THE CITY Member Schools host conferences to bring the FOBISIA community together, ultimately to enrich and inspire our students' learning and leadership skills.

This March, Bangkok International Preparatory & Secondary School (Bankgkok Prep) welcomed delegates from three FOBISIA Member Schools, Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, Regents International School Pattaya (Regents Pattaya) and Charter International School to participate in the 2019 FOBISIA Environmental Conference, with the aim of addressing the increasingly pressing question: How can we connect more with nature whilst living in a modern metropolis?

A Mindful Approach Each day of the conference began with an hour of yoga and mindfulness practice, led by qualified yoga teachers. The

age-old method of establishing the bond between mind and body through conscious breathing enabled the students to begin each day by settling and engaging with themselves and with one another.

Bangkok’s Urban Oasis Once they’d been safely fitted with life-jackets, students and teachers made their way across the river using traditional longtail boats to reach Bang Krachao - Bangkok’s ‘Green Lung'. Hailed as the largest natural space in any Asian mega-city, the area is a haven for wildlife and host to many bird species, large monitor lizards and even several snake species. The students worked together to compete in

a variety of ecologically-themed challenges and games. They also participated in a photography workshop led by professional photographers.

Keynote Speech In association with our partners at WWF Thailand, we welcomed WWF’s Head of Conservation, Gordon Congdon Jr, to open the second day of the conference.

Mr Congdon is a recognised champion of biodiversity and, in particular, is known for his inspirational work in protecting tigers throughout Southeast Asia.

affiliated members of the globally recognised Eco Schools programme, the conference provided an excellent opportunity to make links with our sponsors for the event BCPG, the largest supplier of solar panels in Southeast Asia. Conference participants also visited Bangkok Prep’s in-house organic farm campus to plant vegetables and learn how they can do this back in their own schools. Then they had the pleasure of visiting Bangchak’s learning centre to be informed of the cutting-edge developments led by our event sponsors.

Reduce, Recycle, Upcycle!

The conference concluded with a series of workshops. Using the awesome MakerSpace - a room furnished entirely with upcycled materials - our team led the students to create frames for their own photos using old magazines. Our colleagues from the Sang Foundation continued to help us raise awareness by creating a mini Bobo the Whale for each school to take home with them. We were also pleased to welcome Second Chance Bangkok back to Bangkok Prep to hold a fantastic upcycling workshop enabling students to create bags from old t-shirts. Our friends at RoyRak joined us too and made amazing bracelets from old ringpulls with the students. All of these activities reinforced the conference take-home message: We can and must be ever-more mindful of what we consume as our cities continue to grow.

DRAMA IN FOCUS Member Schools host a range of arts fesitvals to bring the FOBISIA community together to enrich and inspire students' creative learning.

In March 2019, the 8th Annual FOBISIA Drama Festival was held at Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS) in Penang, Malaysia. Launching in 2011 with a humble 80 people, FOBISIA's Drama Festivals have become the highlight of the annual calendar for both drama students and teachers, attracting over 200 participants. During the festival, students take part in a variety of workshops run by teachers from participating schools, as well as specialised practitioners, and are also treated to performances from professionals in the field.

As well as the annual festival, there is also a yearly conference which offers professional development opportunities for drama teachers in the form of Job Alike Workshops (JAWS).

These JAWS have grown in popularity and serve as an excellent opportunity for teachers to share best practice, take part in team-building challenges and make contact with like-minded professionals.

In the past, the conference and festival were hosted concurrently by the same Member School.

However, due to the growth of both events, the newly appointed FOBISIA Drama Committee is thrilled to announce big changes to these popular events.

Beginning next academic year, there will be two festivals. The Term 1 Drama Festival will be hosted by The Regent’s

International School Bangkok (REGB) especially for Year 9 and 10 students. The Term 3 Drama Festival will be hosted by British School Jakarta (BSJ) especially for students in Year 7 and 8.

The reorganisation of the festivals is intended to allow for the inclusion of more Member Schools in the FOBISIA community, while also allowing the festivals to be tailored to better meet the educational needs of students of different ages.

The Term 1 Drama Conference (including the JAWS) will be hosted by Tanglin Trust School (TTS) in Singapore. This will alleviate the pressure of hosting both a festival and conference while ensuring an accessible and inclusive professional development offering in a central location within the region.

We look forward to an exciting year of growth next year for FOBISIA Drama!

INSPIRING & ENCOURAGING OUR BUDDING WRITERS Member Schools host competitions to bring the FOBISIA community together to inspire and challenge students' learning in a range of academic subjects.

On 15 February 2019, entries to the FOBISIA Short Story Competition poured in from schools across Southeast Asia and a long month later, the winners were announced.

The competition was fierce with 15 final entries to the Year 3-4 category, 18 for the Year 5-6 category and 25 for the Senior School Category. The final entries, however, are only the tip of the iceberg.

By hosting the competition at Dulwich College (Singapore), we gained an insight into the huge drive, effort and enthusiasm generated by both students and staff whilst promoting the competition. The FOBISIA Short Story Competition provided a platform across the College to encourage creativity amongst all of our students, whilst helping us support the many budding writers in our community; each and every student in Year 5 and 6 entered a story to be considered for the competition and English lessons across the Senior School used the stimulus ‘Home’ as inspiration for writing and discussion. As an English teacher, imagining this process being reflected across the multitude of other competing schools is a heartening thought.

Choo Waihong, author of ‘The Kingdom of Women: Life, Love and Death in China’s Hidden Mountains’, was the competition’s judge.

Published in 2007, her book is now available in four other languages, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and

Finnish. The book garnered a BBC Radio 2 Book Club Recommendation for 2017, and won the Asian Books Blog Book of the Lunar New Year In the Year of the Rooster (2018).

Waihong acknowledged how difficult it was to choose just one winner from each category, concluding that, given the quality of every entry, ‘the writing ability of the students in these schools must be of a very high standard indeed’. However, a special mention must go to the overall winners for their exceptional entries and those shortlisted as runners-up.

For the Year 3 and 4 category, congratulations to Rainbow, of The Alice Smith School, for her entry 'The Orphanage’ which was awarded first prize. Waihong said she was hooked from the very first sentence of this tale about two orphan friends and their ensuing adventure.

Second prize was awarded to Ananya, of Shrewsbury International School, for ‘Vinita and the Painted Home’, and third prize to Andy, of North London Collegiate School, Jeju, for ‘I See’.

For the Year 5 and 6 category, congratulations to 'S' of St. Christopher's International Primnary School, for ‘Fiery Escapade’.

Described by Waihong as a ‘nail biting drama’ which followed two unusual protagonists - bald eagles on the run from hunters. Also to be commended are Daniel, of Dulwich College (Singapore), for his story ‘Belonging’, gaining second prize, and

Jacob of Dulwich College Seoul, for ‘The Cottage of an Old Graying Man’, gaining third prize.

Finally, for the Senior School category, congratulations to the joint winners, Isabel of Jerudong International School, for ‘Returning’, and Chloe, of The International School @ ParkCity, for ‘Red Packets’. Waihong commented that although these two stories were wildly divergent in their plot line – ‘Returning’ is a narrative about a Syrian refugee returning home, whilst ‘Red Packets’ is a retelling of the Chinese New Year story through a reunion of vampire bats she was equally ‘wowed’ by both.

Well done to Abayaa, of The British School, Kathmandu, for ‘And She Ran’, taking second prize, and Cornelius (Preecha), of St .Andrews International School, Green Valley, for ‘Take Me Home’, taking third prize.

AUGMENTING REALITY WITH CREATIVE CODING Member Schools host competitions to bring the FOBISIA community together to inspire and challenge students' learning in a range of academic subjects.

North London Collegiate School Jeju (NLCS), South Korea, hosted the 4th FOBISIA Creative Coding Challenge in February 2019. This annual event celebrates student success in computing, and highlights one of the key benefits of children attending a Britishcurriculum school.

NLCS invited Member Schools to participate in the challenge to problem-solve, be creative and imaginative, and have fun. There were no winners; every team received a certificate for their Commended, Highly Commended, Excellent or Outstanding Performance.

It was an amazing challenge for the 13 international Member Schools that participated, with 400+ students and 195 teams from across KS2, KS3, KS4 and KS5. The teams used a variety of tools to develop their projects.

This year’s theme was an Augmented Reality experience in which students were asked

to work on a game. They participated in teams of two to four people.

The students enjoyed this event which was evident in high quality of their work. This project offered plenty of opportunities for the participants to learn new skills and use their subject knowledge to develop and showcase a game.

UPDATE FROM THE UK FOBISIA keeps in touch with education news from the United Kingdom and internationally via David Rowlands' Keynotes.

Accountability Nick Compton, a primary school governor, wrote an excellent essay for the TES, outlining his concerns with the extent to which data is dictating what happens in schools. ‘Who wants to break free from data?’ TES 8th March, 2019.

At a governors’ meeting, Mr Compton suggested that all data gathering be dropped – other than that specifically required by the DfE. To his surprise, the teacher representative on the governing body argued strongly against such a move. This made Mr Compton realise how much teachers, particularly younger ones, have come to rely on the mass of data generated. He suspects that teachers who have known nothing else, would feel vulnerable without it.

Mr Compton is concerned that professional judgements are being replaced by numerical indicators of performance that rely on standardised data. He goes on to provide examples of

how good practice in school is not reflected in the data (a crosscurricular project that enthused his daughter, being a case in point).

He believes that education has become data-centred rather than child-centred. As a governor, he interrogates the data generated by the school to check that standards (in the form of scores) are being met, yet he is acutely aware that what parents value ‘happiness, kindness, resilience, tolerance, determination, empathy, fulfilment, and so on, are largely unmeasurable’.

His favourite question, when discussing data with the leadership team, is whether teachers have learnt anything new from the data. He notes, somewhat wryly, that ‘by and large’, the answer is no.

Ofsted’s New Framework Sir Kevan Collins, CEO of the Education Endowment Foundation, is pleased that the new Ofsted framework is based

on research evidence and that Ofsted has shared the sources of evidence used when making their recommendations. Writing in the TES, Sir Collins feels this is a significant step forward.

Ofsted’s review draws on considerable research into memory, citing laboratory studies, neuroscience research as well as classroom trials. A variety of strategies, including spaced learning, retrieval practice and interleaving continue to be investigated.

On the subject of differentiation, the new proposals are not calling for individual education plans or multiple levels of differentiation in lesson plans. This, alone, should reduce teachers’ workload quite considerably. The review is suggesting teachers adapt their teaching to meet the needs of different abilities, rather than specifically differentiating in their planning.

Group work, says the report, is not just a question of allocating

pupils to groups. It requires a considerable amount of planning and preparation if it is to be effective. Tasks must be clearly structured.

The review gives considerable space to the teaching of reading, highlighting the five essential components as: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Ofsted’s review places a heavy emphasis on the teaching of phonics – possibly underselling the other elements in the view of Kevan Collins. He would also have liked to see more coverage of metacognition, since a growing body of research suggests that some strategies – planning, monitoring and evaluating one’s own work for example - are effective means of improving outcomes. Kevan Collins adds that metacognition serves a useful purpose of challenging ‘an unhelpful binary between knowledge and skills’.

On balance, Sir Collins thinks the new framework is a significant improvement on previous efforts.

Pedagogy Compared: East Vs West Following Shanghai’s repeated successes in the PISA maths assessments, the DfE believed the UK could learn something from their methods. Michael Gove provided the impetus extoling the virtues of the East Asian pedagogy back in 2010.

In 2014-15 the DfE arranged for teachers to visit Shanghai.

Chinese teachers then made reciprocal visits to England to demonstrate their teaching strategies. Would their style of didactic, whole-class teaching be effective in an English setting?

The initial results were not dramatic, but were sufficiently encouraging to prompt the DfE to announce, in 2016, that the Asian maths “mastery” pedagogy would be introduced in England’s primary schools. In 2017, Harper Collins was awarded a contract to translate the Chinese textbooks into English. In 2018 the DfE announced £76 million of funding to kick-start the Maths Mastery programme. As yet, there is no clear indication that the maths programme is significantly improving outcomes – although it is still early days.

But the expertise and teaching style is not all one way. The Chinese appreciate the emphasis Western schools place on the application of knowledge and the ‘soft’ skills of communication, collaborative working and creativity.

There is an increasing demand for bilingual schools in China and these are adopting aspects of both styles of education by combining the rigour of the East with more holistic approach of the West. The Chinese want their students to develop independence and critical thinking skills, but to build on a solid foundation of knowledge.

To this end, a combination of the two teaching styles will, they hope, provide the solution.

The DfE’s Recruitment & Retention Strategy In February, the DfE announced plans for improving teacher recruitment and retention.

training will run for two years, during which teachers will be mentored as they work through a structured programme. At the end they will be assessed against the expected standards. Teachers will teach a 90% timetable in their first year and 95% timetable in the second. The government is proposing to fund this.

Ofsted is going to provide a phoneline which headteachers can call if they believe lead inspectors are making demands that add to a school’s workload.

Bursaries, provided to those training to teach shortage subjects, are going to be reformed. Some of the bursary will be held back until the teacher has taught for a number of years. Additional funds will be provided to those willing to teach in challenging schools.

There are ongoing discussions on how to assist teachers with housing, particularly in expensive areas such as London. If schools have surplus land, they may be allowed to build housing specifically for their teaching staff.

In the document, there is a suggestion that more teachers should be included on the shortage occupation list which prioritises work visas. Currently, only maths, physics, general science, mandarin and computing are on the list. The TES believes the whole teaching profession should be added.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS SUPPORT HIGHER EDUCATION SUCCESS FOBISIA supports evidence-based practice and shares education research that informs British-style international education.

A new, free report published by ISC Research shares information about the university choices that are being made by students at the world’s international schools. The report also focuses on research into the professional relationships between schools and universities that facilitate selection success for students.

The Pathway from International School to University report includes qualitative as well as quantitative research conducted

by ISC Research in September 2018, with college counsellors in over 180 international schools around the world. The report highlights the fact that Englishmedium international schools are a fast-growing source of high calibre undergraduates for universities. It also identifies the challenges that students and

guidance professionals at these schools face as the global higher education market expands and becomes increasingly competitive.

International schools around the world have become recognised for their success in offering a reliable pathway to higher education and this has helped the market to grow into a multi-billion-dollar industry. Many parents select international schools on this fact alone. According to ISC Research data, there are now over 10,000 English-medium international schools worldwide delivering learning to over 5 million students. 55% of these schools provide learning for students aged between 16 and 18.

Academic Success, Greater Choice The report highlights the grade averages of the three most popular qualifications offered

by the world’s international schools; A Levels, International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and Advanced Placement. They suggest significantly higher levels of academic achievement than global averages. In addition, 83% of respondents in the survey stated that over 90% of their 2017-2018 grade 12 students gained places in higher education.

University destinations for 2017-2018 international school students were varied, covering all countries where English-medium degrees are now offered. The most popular countries were the US, UK, Canada, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Germany and Japan.

The report indicates various reasons motivating students’ choice of country including cost, visa benefits, safety of

the country, ranking of the university, and active promotion by the university to students, as well as location of the university and quality of education provision.

Almost 50% of the college counsellors researched in the study said that universities from more countries were now promoting their degrees to the school and its students.

“With the expansion of Englishmedium courses in non-Englishspeaking countries, including the Netherlands, Germany and the UAE, the choices that a student, their family, support network and the college counsellor need to consider, are increasingly complex,” states the report.

“Today, college counsellors need to be educated in all the options available to the students,” it adds.

The most popular universities where international school students gained places in 2018 were University of British Columbia and University of Toronto in Canada, University College London and King’s College London in the United Kingdom, and New York University in the United States.

The most popular subject choices focused on accounting, finance, business and management studies; engineering; economics; and computer science and information systems. But the research highlights the fact that international school students made a broad selection of degrees that also included politics, law, medicine, art and design, and psychology.

Essential Selection Support The report provides some clear insights into the challenges and opportunities that international school students face as they select their next step and make

their move to higher education.

It also demonstrates the benefit that trusted relationships between international school college counsellors and university international officers can have on student pathway outcomes.

“It is all about connections,” states the report. “College counsellors spend considerable time building relationships with university international officers. The development of these relationships, through close engagement, allows college counsellors to enhance their body of knowledge on the most suitable and relevant options for students’ specific circumstances. With this counselling expertise, students are closer to making decisions,” the report explains.

One college counsellor, Jacqui Brelsford from FOBISIA Member School, the British International School, Phuket, who was interviewed as part of the research said: “Universities coming to us is really important.

The students know about the universities that come to visit and they apply to the same 10-12 universities each year. I would like to see some of the lesser known universities come visit us.”

However, the report suggests that, for some international schools, the guidance of students at this pivotal stage of their life, may be lacking as a result of the increasingly complex nature of university selection.

“College counsellors’ roles are extremely variable between schools, more a function of the allocation of resources and college counselling provision by individual schools, than a reflection of interest or counsellors’ specific approaches,” states the report.

“As the number of students studying at international schools and seeking entry into higher

education continues to increase, this is about managing workloads more effectively and distributing resources.”

Balancing Aspiration & Best Fit The report also raises awareness of the high aspirations of many international school parents and the challenge that college counsellors face in managing conflicting desires of the student and parents. The report says that most college counsellors who were researched mentioned how parents can have quite different expectations for their child’s university education than their child. “College counsellors can spend considerable time with the parents, who can communicate a strong position on the ‘what’ and ‘where’,” says the report.

College counsellor, Jeremy Handcock from Vienna International School told the researcher: “It does happen quite often that parents have decided that their son or daughter will be a doctor or engineer…and sometimes they even decided which university their son or daughter will go to, irrespective of the fact that Oxford or Cambridge are on 40 plus points and their kid’s got 30.” This is where the role of the college counsellor is vital, says the report: “It’s essential for informing the student and parent body, cohort after cohort, of university campus qualities and course selection; it is equally important for guiding ‘right fit’ selection, so increasing the potential of degree retention and success.”

The report highlights areas where improvements may need to be made at international schools, and by universities, if college counsellors are to offer the best guidance, resulting in successful progression and degree retention for all students.

Working with UCL Institute of Education in the Far East The UCL Institute of Education (IoE) has taken over 200 delegates through the NPQ programmes. They have a wealth of experience in running these programmes locally and they offer outstanding support throughout the duration of the 12 to 18-month programme.

The NPQ programmes, as delivered via UCL’s IoE, are recognised and supported across the globe. The programmes offer a unique opportunity to network with other international leaders from across the Far East. The IoE offers additional support throughout the programme and at the final assessment stage, with a dedicated educational and administrative London-based team.

National Professional Qualification for Headship The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) supports the professional development of aspiring and serving headteachers. In addition to the induction and five face-to-face (F2F) sessions, the NPQH programme follows a blended learning format. This consists of workplace learning and practice activities, peer and facilitated learning, reading, structured reflection, online learning and a 360 diagnostic assessment.

BARONESS SUSAN GREENFIELD

Susan Greenfield is a research neuro scientist, and author based in Oxford. She has held research fellowships in the Department of Physiology Oxford, the College de France Paris, and NYU Medical Center New York. In 2000 she was elected to an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians. Susan has held a Visiting Professorship at the Medical School, University of Melbourne, Australia and is currently CEO of a biotech company that she founded in 2013.

KENDALL ZOLLER

Kendall Zoller, EdD, is an author, educator, researcher, and international presenter in communicative intelligence, presentation and facilitation skills, leadership and adaptive schools. He is co-author of The Choreography of Presenting: The 7 Essential Abilities of Effective Presenters. Kendall is president of Sierra Training Associates and graduate faculty at California State University, Dominguez Hills and The University of Maine.

JULIE STERN

Julie Stern is the author of Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding, Elementary and Secondary, which are Visible Learning Aligned Resources. She is the thought leader behind the global workshop series, Making Sense of Learning Transfer.

Her passion is synthesizing the best of education research into practical tools that support educators in breaking free of the industrial model of schooling and move toward teaching and learning that promotes sustainability, equity and well-being.

TOM SHERRINGTON

Tom Sherrington is an education consultant and author. He writes the popular blog teacherhead.com and in 2017 he published his book The Learning Rainforest, Great Teaching in Real Classrooms. With 30 years' experience as a physics and maths teacher and school leader, including 11 years as a Headteacher, Tom works with several schools and colleges providing consultancy support on curriculum, assessment and improving the quality of teaching.
