After 39 years at the Roosevelt Square shopping center, Charles and George’s Car Wash will close June 22. The business, which opened in 1980, is making way for a road that’s part of a plan to redevelop the shopping center. Atlanta-based Dewberry Group plans to demolish parts of the center as it rebuilds and rebrands it as Ortega Park. Dewberry leases the property to the car wash and proposed an alternative location in the center, but the two weren’t

able to come to an agreement. For Charles Holt, the car wash’s owner, rebuilding and relocating would have been too costly and with an influx of car washes being built in Jacksonville, there would not have been enough demand. “It’s not a good time to be building a car wash,” Holt said. “There will be a lot of people who lose a lot of money in the car wash industry in the next five to 10 years because of the overbuilding. I wasn’t going to be one of them.” Holt will continue to operate at two other locations – one at Cassat Avenue and another in Orange Park on U.S. 17.

Employees from the Roosevelt Square location will move to either of Charles and George’s other two locations, which Holt said he thinks will become busier once the Roosevelt Square location closes. Plans for the development include shopping, dining and multifamily housing. Holt said he thinks Dewberry is a “smart” company that will make something beneficial for the community. “I think the neighborhood will be happy with it,” Holt said. A Dependent Special Taxing District in Baymeadows to pay for repairs of deteriorating privately owned roads and infrastructure could mean up to a $500 annual assessment on single-family homes in the area. District 11 City Council member Danny Becton detailed his proposed legislation to create the Baymeadows Community Improvement District at a town hall meeting Wednesday. The district, if approved by council, could add up to a $5,000 assessment on multifamily properties in the neighborhood. The assessment would be added to property tax bills and would be in addition to homeowners association fees. It would pay for roads, street lighting and stormwater drainage projects. It would be the first time a private Jacksonville community used Florida’s dependent special district statute for infrastructure repairs. The district would collect the money for the neighborhoods to execute projects in the Baymeadows Community Plan that was approved by council in 2014. At the town hall meeting at Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Deerwood Center, Becton urged Baymeadows residents — represented by nine homeowners associations — to look at the area as a single entity. “We’re all connected,” Becton said. “One of the other things I’ll SEE BAYMEADOWS, PAGE 2

SunTrust, BB&T becoming Truist SunTrust Banks Inc. and BB&T Corp., which agreed to merge in February, announced that the combined company will be named Truist Financial Corp. and the merged bank will be known as Truist Bank. The companies said they hired a brand consultant and received input from employees in coming up with the new name. Both companies have offices in Downtown Jacksonville and have 38 combined branches in the area. They have not revealed plans for the local offices after the merger.
