Dear members,
As I write this message today, my heart is heavy. It was recently the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death, and my heart hurts for his family, the families of so many others and for our country. It also serves as a reminder that, for many years, we have talked about being a more welcoming and inclusive community and chamber. One of my goals is to make that a priority and see it come to fruition, but I certainly can’t do that alone.
Our Chamber has begun the process of really diving into diversity, equity and inclusion but we have a long, long way to go. Our Professionals of Color committee has done some great work, and this group of very passionate leaders will help us to achieve great things in the future. Thank you to those of you that are serving on that committee; I want to welcome anyone else that is interested in moving forward with diversity, equity and inclusions initiatives to please join us.
Another aspect of being a welcoming and inclusive organization is to start with our internal processes. I am actively seeking partners that want to help me with internal training for our team. I know that I have a lot to learn, and one of the first steps is being courageous enough to admit that. I truly want to seek to understand and then be willing to make changes. So, if you have ideas for us internally or programming externally, please reach out and share them with me.
We live in an amazing community, and together, we can make it even better. I look forward to our future as we strive to be a truly welcoming and inclusive community.
Sincerely,

Shannon Full President & CEO
Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce

Sandi Piatz
Fargo Site Leader and Director of Community Program Management for Real Estate & Security for the Americas, Microsoft Year joined the board: 2017 Other Chamber Involvement: Diversion Authority, Fueling Our Future
Please briefly share your professional experience and role now. Community focus and impacting others is at the core of what my team and I do at Microsoft. As the Site Leader, my team and I lead the employee and community engagement programs for Microsoft’s Fargo Site, including site operations, employee morale and training, STEM programs and community development.

What do you like best about serving on The Chamber board?
What I like best about serving on the Chamber board is the opportunity to serve alongside the hardworking business thought leaders that serve on the board. Everyone brings a different perspective and great insights to the board discussions. I value the opportunity to learn from them and work on innovative opportunities to serve the business needs of our community.
What do you do for fun when you’re not working?
When I am not working, I am usually spending time with family and friends. My husband and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this summer and we have 2 young adult children (24 & 19) who we enjoy spending time with. In addition, I like to read and to stay active either golfing, running, yoga, hiking or trying something new. I just recently started CrossFit.
What’s your best piece of advice for future leaders?
My best piece of advice for future leaders is to be curious. Consistently have an open mind and an open heart about all people and all things.

“We really encourage the empowerment of our markets, and the team in those markets, fully understanding that we need to meet the needs and expectations of our customers and community no matter where that - Gary Petersen, Chairman

Trevor Mathew
Financial Professional, Thrivent Chamber committee: Professionals of Color
Other Chamber involvement: YPN (previously)
What would you like others to know about the work of your committee?
Our community is growing in a lot of remarkable ways. One of those ways is through diversity. It is the mission of Professionals of Color to help businesses and individuals thrive with the community. We provide opportunities for individuals of color to connect and find a place of belonging while also developing personal and professional growth. We currently have two monthly events. Discuss, Connect & Reflect is a monthly discussion focusing on a specific topic, like podcast episodes, books or articles. We also have a monthly networking event, Networking Before 9. An exciting opportunity to come in the next school year will be a mentorship program for students of color to connect and learn from professionals in the area.

What is the best professional advice you have ever received?
Know your own mission. Create a mass transformative mission of your own. If you know your purpose, you will apply that purpose to your career and everything you do. My mission is to share joy, inspiration and knowledge with everyone.
What do you do for fun when you’re not working?
I have twin one-and-a-half-year-old girls, and I love spending time with them, playing, and going on walks. They are my world.

Our streamlined operation as a two-platform company delivers shareholder value through our high-performing, low-cost electric utility and disciplined manufacturing companies.
Darin Feir
Design and Technology Specialist
Years with The Chamber: 4
Please briefly describe what you do in your position.
My main responsibilities are graphic design for our publications, programs and events materials, social media and communications. I also help out with content, photos/videos and production. I dabble in a lot and can usually help with a technical problem or google the answer pretty dang quick.

What do you love about your role?
It’s a lot of responsibility to maintain “the look” of anything, especially for an organization that is so impactful to so many people in our community. I feel very appreciated both by the work I do and personally and that’s pretty great!
How else are you involved around the community? I was part of the FMWF Leadership class of 2019–20.
What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself?
I lived overseas for the majority of my adult life and continue to pretend I can still speak Japanese and Korean. I grew up a very picky eater but now love to cook.
Why would you recommend businesses or professionals get involved in The Chamber?
If you grew up here and thought you knew a lot about the community, you might be like me and still have a lot to learn! Join a program or attend an event (we’re back!) or just reach out and connect.

Tyler Fischbach Vice President of Communications
Years with The Chamber: 5
What do you love about your role?
I love that if I leave my desk to run to the printer or get coffee, it will usually be close to 14 minutes before I return; there are always spurof-the-moment ideas to explore with coworkers, questions to ask, updates to hear about, problems to solve, designs to look at, office visitors to meet and laughs to share. Getting to work so closely with our staff, volunteers, community leaders and Chamber members is engaging every single day.

How else are you involved around the community?
I am proud to serve on the board of directors for CCRI, Inc.
Why would you recommend businesses or professionals get involved in The Chamber?
When it comes down to it, “The Chamber” is just an easier way to say “our business community, dedicated volunteers, thought leaders, diverse professionals, public policy advocates and much more, all working together to make our FMWF area the best place to live, work, learn, play and do business.” Involvement is unique to each business and professional, but it shapes who we are as an organization and community. You are The Chamber.

It was quite an ‘80s party at the 2021 ChamberChoice Awards luncheon, where we honored businesses and non-profits in our community. Patrick Kirby returned as emcee, and Tom Dawson and Roger Reierson represented the event’s presenting sponsors.

MAYOR: LEE ANDERSON CURRENT POPULATION: 2,600
The city that has been home to five North Dakota governors got its start as a windbreak.
It was 1873, and the Northern Pacific Railway sent Mike Smith to plant cottonwood and willow trees in the area to serve as windbreaks along the railroad’s right-of-way. The idea was to harvest the trees and use them for railroad ties when the trees grew to maturity.
In 1874, the railroad established a station there and called it Casstown after George Cass, the railroad president. On August 8, 1876, the spot was named Casselton and a post office was established. When the town was incorporated as a village in 1880, the official census was 376. During the 1870s, George Cass and Peter Cheney had traded their railroad stock for 10,000 acres near Casselton and decided to develop the land as one large farm rather than dividing the land into small tracts. The venture was highly successful and proved that the prairie was suitable for agriculture. Meanwhile, the community continued to grow, and by 1885 the population had reached 1,365.
What kind of growth have you seen recently in your community?
Casselton has continued to grow steadily over the last 25 years. With the hiring of a full-time economic development professional in 2020, the community is committed to ensuring businesses are fully supported and poised for growth. With this new hire came additional support for businesses struggling throughout COVID-19, as a local source for direct assistance to businesses.
What do you think makes your community unique?
What could we expect if we visited?
Casselton residents work very diligently together to partner with local government on various projects. One such highlight would be the $26 million expansion and renovation project for Central Cass School which was completed in the fall of 2018. The expansion features included a 32,000-square-foot early education building that connects to the existing elementary school, replacement of the existing practice gymnasium with a new 53,000-square-foot multi-purpose gymnasium, theater and wellness center, including support spaces, locker rooms, new administration offices, as well as new band and choir facilities, and remodeling to support a new STEM and Science Classroom. Athletic facility improvement made included a new synthetic turf football field as well as new track and field facilities. This is known as the largest public-private partnership within a public school system in the state of North Dakota and was completed under the direction of Superintendent Morgan Forness.
What issues are city leadership paying close attention to right now?
Casselton’s City Council is paying close attention to the land use and growth potential of our community—including both commercial and residential. We have many beautiful housing lots for sale from private developers, and very visible room in our industrial park. The council is working hard to thoughtfully plan for our future.

Now in its ninth year, this prestigious award recognizes the top 10% of 241 publicly traded community banks in the U.S. with assets between $500 million and $10 billion. Recipients demonstrated superior financial performance in one or more of six financial performance and stability areas, as identified and measured by Raymond James. Those areas include: non-performing assets to loans and real estate owned, five-year average core deposit percentage, net interest margin, efficiency ratio, return on average assets, and return on average tangible common equity.

Power 2021 U.S. Full-Service Investor Satisfaction Study(sm), the firm announced. Reduction Project Cited in National Engineering Competition
KLJ Engineering has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ 54th annual Engineering Excellence Awards for the City of Grafton’s Flood Risk Reduction Project. KLJ’s comprehensive strategy removes the city of Grafton from the 100-year floodplain, provides permanent flood protection, and eliminates the need for citizens and businesses to carry flood insurance. The project included a 3.2-mile Park River diversion channel capable of channeling up to 14,000 cubic feet of water per second away from the community during major flood events. More than 12 miles of tie-back levees further protect the city, which will save $1 million per year in flood management costs.

What does Centre for Hair & Wellness do and why do you do it?
Established in 1983, Centre for Hair & Wellness is a full-service salon that focuses on making you feel comfortable and confident.
My perspective on hair and beauty expanded greatly in 1990 when a woman came to me for help after losing her hair due to chemotherapy. Hair loss is devastating. I was able to find her a natural-looking wig that made her feel so much better about herself.

Ever since, I’ve been helping both women and men look better and feel great. Whether their hair loss is due to chemotherapy, radiation, alopecia areata, trichotillomania or just plain thinning hair, the Centre for Hair offers a range of solutions to overcome the pain and embarrassment.
What sets the Centre for Hair & Wellness apart?
We work closely with each of our clients to find the right hairpiece that looks and feels natural, as well as fits their lifestyle and budget. There are many options for clients, including human and manmade hair, length and style, the quality of the hair and the base itself. Many of our wigs are custom-ordered to the client’s unique measurements, then cut, colored and styled to make them look exactly as they want.

What are your upcoming plans?
Over the years, I have worked with several initiatives to help cancer patients, and others facing personal challenges, regain the natural look that their illness has taken away from them. For example, we are offering a free monthly class to help women cope with the loss of eyelashes and eyebrows, which often accompanies overall hair loss. We’ll teach them to apply makeup for a totally natural look. Give us a call to find out the time and location.
What do you like best about belonging to The Chamber and doing business in Moorhead-Fargo-West Fargo?
I love the network of professionals I meet through The Chamber, along with the classes and events they connect me with. This is the perfect-sized city in which to do business. The people are great! They care about each other and take care of one another.
Consultations are free and our facilities are discreet and private, which encourages clients to ask all of their questions.
FOUNDED: 1983 LOCATION: 420 Center Mall (north entrance)
What is one thing you want other chamber and community members to know about you?
I care. Every woman and man who comes here is unique. I take the time to listen and to understand what will make them regain their confidence and feel whole again.
Thank you to all of our sponsors that make The Chamber regular events and programs possible.
