A THE JOY OF SHOPPING LOCAL

s the seasons change and the holidays draw near, our communities come alive with color, warmth, and opportunity. The annual Shopping Issue is our chance to celebrate the businesses that make our towns thrive—the local shops, makers, and entrepreneurs who turn everyday errands into

experiences and purchases into connections.

Shopping local is about more than convenience or nostalgia. It’s about investing in the community. Every dollar spent at a neighborhood store ripples outward to support employment, fund schools, sustain local

charities, and keep our city vibrant. These businesses are owned by our friends and neighbors, people who care deeply about the places we call home.

Shopping local also offers something online clicks can’t replicate, connection. It’s the smile of a familiar face

behind the counter, the care that goes into gift wrapping, the extra minute taken to ask how your family’s doing. It’s personal, meaningful, and rooted in community pride.

As you explore this issue, we hope you’ll be inspired to rediscover what makes our local shopping scene so special. Whether you’re searching for the perfect holiday gift, a treat for yourself, or a new favorite spot to visit with friends, remember that every local

purchase helps keep our community strong and unique.

So this season—and every season—let’s shop with purpose. Let’s celebrate the creativity, hard work, and heart behind every small business.

Halberstadt’s Reinvention

of Modern Menswear

It would be difficult to find anyone in the FM area who hasn’t heard the name Halberstadt’s And, those who do hear the name usually have their minds immediately go to piles of ties, rows of suit coats, and the warm wood walls that line the original downtown Fargo store. All of those wonderful things are still all there. However, a new energy also moves through the space as Halberstadt's is fast becoming North Dakota’s premier lifestyle brand.

More Than a Suit Store

For decades, Halberstadt’s has been the name Fargo associates with sharp suits and polished professionalism. Walk through their doors today, though, and you’ll find a story that’s evolved well beyond the boardroom.

“We’re not just selling clothes,” Owner Barry Gruchow said. “We’re helping guys express who they are. Whether that’s for work, a wedding, date night, or a weekend on the golf course, we want to fit into their lifestyle—not just their closet. It’s about style, confidence, and feeling like your best self every day, not just when you’re in a suit.”

The store’s transformation is easy to see. Golf polos from Peter Millar and G/ Fore sit alongside premium denim from Paige and Mavi. Wolf & Shepherd and Johnston & Murphy champion the work-casual look, while stalwarts like Hart Schaffner Marx and Jack Victor remain ready for when the occasion calls for timeless formality. Throw in young, style-forward brands like 7Diamonds, and you’ve got the best assortment of high-quality menswear under one roof.

“It’s about balance,” Gruchow said. “We’ve always cared about looking good, but now it’s about feeling good too. The guy who shops here might be headed to a client meeting, the course, or a casual dinner downtown. We make sure he’s ready for all of it.”

A Timeline of Confidence

Halberstadt’s first opened its doors more than 40 years ago, built on craftsmanship, service, and a deep respect for quality. Over the decades, it’s become a fixture in the Midwest’s fashion landscape by adapting to changing generations while never losing its sense of sophistication.

That ability to evolve is what’s kept the brand thriving. From its early years focused solely on tailored offerings to today’s curated mix of performance wear, lifestyle apparel, and luxury casuals, Halberstadt’s has mastered the art of progression without pretense.

“We’ll always love a great suit,” Gruchow said, “but today’s guy lives in a lot more than that. We started paying attention to how our customers actually spend their days—traveling, working remotely, playing golf, going out—and expanded into clothing that fits all those parts of life. The evolution happened naturally as our customers’ lives changed, and we wanted to grow with them.”

From Broadway to the Browser

HalberstadtsClothing.com is set to open its e-commerce platform soon and the move will bring the boutique’s in-store experience online, allowing customers to shop from anywhere without losing the feel of that personal, polished service.

“Our online presence will never replace the relationships we have in-store,” Gruchow said. “But we want it to feel like the same conversation—one that’s real, personal, and rooted in style that lasts.”

A Curated Vision for What’s Next

If there’s one word that defines the modern Halberstadt's, it’s intentional. Every product is handpicked not just because it looks good, but because it belongs.

“We look for brands that share our values of great quality, timeless design, and a focus on fit and feel,” Gruchow said. “If it’s something we’d wear ourselves and can stand behind, it makes the cut. We go to many markets over the course of any given year and hand-select everything that goes into our stores.”

Ask any loyal customer why they keep coming back, and the answer is simple: service.

“Service, plain and simple,” Gruchow said. “We know our customers—their sizes, their preferences, their lives. You can’t get that level of attention or trust from a big-box store or a website. We’re here to help you find what fits you, not just what’s trending.”

Barry Gruchow has built that philosophy into every store. Their six locations—Downtown Fargo, 32nd Avenue South Fargo, Downtown Bismarck, Kirkwood Mall Bismarck, Minot, and the newly opened Downtown Grand Forks all offer a consistent standard that includes clean layouts, genuine associates, and a personal approach to helping men look and feel their best.

“Our goal is to be the go-to resource for men who want to look their best,” Gruchow said. “Whether it’s a first suit, a wedding weekend, or a seasonal wardrobe refresh, all of our stores share the same commitment to excellence that people have come to expect from Halberstadt’s.”

The Modern Halberstadt’s Man Service Over Everything

He knows the value of a great jacket but doesn’t need an occasion to wear one. He invests in quality because it lasts. He’s active, ambitious, and effortlessly put together, and whether he’s wearing a tailored suit or a performance polo, he wears it with confidence.

Brain Fog ISN’T Normal

1.

Your spine protects your nervous system, which is the pathway your brain uses to send messages throughout your body.

When the spine is tense or misaligned, those messages can get a little scrambled. Most people don’t even realize how tense they are because this has been their “normal” for so long.

Chiropractic adjustments focused on your specific areas of stress, help restore clear communication, which may help your brain feel sharper and more focused.

2.

Tension or misalignment in the neck and upper back can reduce circulation to the head.

Chiropractic care can boost blood and oxygen flow, giving your brain the nourishment it needs to function at its best.

3.

Help Your Brain and Body Communicate Better Improve Blood Flow and Oxygen to the Brain Reduce Stress and Calm the Nervous System

When your body is stuck in “stress mode,” it’s harder to think clearly.

Chiropractic adjustments help activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is your body’s natural “rest and digest” state. The goal is to get you out of a chronic “fight or flight” state.

This can lead to less anxiety, lower stress hormones, and a calmer, clearer mind.

FEELING FOGGY, FORGETFUL, OR UNFOCUSED? You’re not alone! Many people, especially during perimenopause or during the hormonal swings of motherhood, experience what’s often called “brain fog.” It can make you feel mentally cloudy, tired, or just “not like yourself.”

We aren’t just your average chiropractic clinic at Strive Chiropractic.

We have the tools to identify nervous system dysfunction and dysregulation objectively, which means we can see what’s being triggered in your body and where your symptoms are potentially stemming from. We create individual care plans after uncovering your specific needs so that we can focus on reducing your physical tension and stress, which supports hormone balance and good sleep naturally.

If you’ve been feeling foggy or mentally drained, it’s time to JUST GET CHECKED!

The good news is that WE CAN HELP by bringing back your mental clarity and energy through supporting your body’s natural balance. Here’s how: 4. 5. Support Better Sleep Especially Helpful During Perimenopause

Poor sleep is one of the biggest reasons for brain fog.

By easing tension and promoting the body’s natural state of relaxation, chiropractic care can help you sleep more deeply and wake up feeling refreshed. A major win for mental clarity!

During hormonal changes, symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, irritability, and poor sleep can make brain fog even worse than it otherwise was.

ASK THE EXPERT:

HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR HOME ENERGY EFFICIENT

HOW DOES INSULATION DIRECTLY AFFECT A HOME’S ENERGY USE AND UTILITY BILLS?

1. REDUCES HEAT TRANSFER

• In winter: Keeps heat inside instead of letting it escape through walls, attics, and floors.

• In summer: Blocks outdoor heat from entering, so the home stays cooler.

• Heating often accounts for 40–60% of a home’s energy use in cold climates. Insulation sharply cuts this load.

• Depending on climate and existing insulation levels, homeowners can save 15–40% on heating and cooling bills after upgrading insulation.

2. LOWERS HVAC DEMAND

• With less heat gain/loss, your furnace, AC, or heat pump doesn’t have to run as often.

• This lowers electricity and fuel consumption while also extending the lifespan of equipment.

2. IMPROVES EFFICIENCY OF OTHER SYSTEMS

• Even the best windows, doors, or HVAC units lose effectiveness in a poorly insulated home.

• Insulation acts as the “foundation” for true efficiency — without it, energysaving upgrades deliver smaller returns.

WHAT AREAS OF THE HOME SHOULD BE PRIORITIZED FIRST FOR INSULATION UPGRADES?

ATTIC / ROOF

Heat rises, and in an under-insulated attic, it escapes quickly in winter or radiates down in summer.

Benefits:

• Largest single energy savings potential (often 25–30% of heating/cooling loss).

• Prevents ice dams in snowy climates.

• Makes upstairs rooms more comfortable.

EXTERIOR WALLS

Walls make up the largest surface area of the home’s “thermal envelope.” Gaps in wall insulation lead to drafts, uneven room temperatures, and high HVAC demand.

Benefits:

• Stabilizes temperatures across rooms.

• Reduces noise from outdoors.

• Cuts down on drafts and allergens.

BASEMENT / CRAWL SPACE

These areas let in cold, damp air and allow heat to escape through uninsulated floors. Moisture here often spreads mold or mildew into living areas.

Benefits:

• Warmer floors in winter.

• Less risk of mold growth.

• Keeps pests and moisture under control.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR HOME IS UNDERINSULATED OR LOSING ENERGY?

1. Uneven Temperatures Between Rooms

2. Drafts Near Windows, Doors, or Floors

3. High Heating & Cooling Bills

4. Cold Walls, Ceilings, or Floors

5. Ice Dams on the Roof

6. HVAC Running Constantly

7. Uneven Snow Melt on the Roof

8. Moisture, Mold, or Musty Smells

WHAT’S THE LONGTERM COST-BENEFIT OF INVESTING IN BETTER INSULATION?

• Proper insulation reduces heating & cooling demand by 15–40% depending on the home’s age and climate.

• In a typical Midwest/U.S. home, that can mean $500–$1,000+ in annual savings.

• Insulation upgrades often pay back in 3–7 years through reduced utility bills.

The tasting room offers flights, seasonal pairings, and an approachable introduction to a drink that’s equal parts ancient craft and contemporary artistry. Prairie Rose proves that the heart of North Dakota’s beverage scene isn’t just beer— it’s innovation rooted in tradition.

4E WINERY

Tucked just west of Fargo in Mapleton, 4e Winery has quietly built a reputation as one of North Dakota’s most distinctive winemakers. Founded by Greg and Dawn Kitch, the “4e” name stands for earth, energy, essence, and experience—a philosophy that guides every bottle they produce.

Their wines draw from both traditional grapes and hardy northern varietals suited to the state’s climate, along with locally sourced fruits. Favorites include the Frontenac and Marquette reds, known for their depth and subtle spice, and crisp whites like La Crescent and Brianna, which carry notes of pear, citrus, and honey. Seasonal fruit wines—such as chokecherry, rhubarb, and plum—add a distinctly regional touch, celebrating North Dakota’s agricultural roots in every pour.

At their welcoming tasting room, guests can sip flights, enjoy local cheese pairings, and take in the sweeping prairie views. 4e Winery has become a gathering spot for locals and travelers alike—a place where craftsmanship, community, and the character of North Dakota converge beautifully in a glass.

ABSOLUTE STYLE BOUTIQUE

Q&A WITH ABSOLUTE STYLE BOUTIQUE OWNER ERICA HILDE

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR BOUTIQUE, AND WHY HERE IN THE FM AREA?

I’ve been interested in fashion my entire life. I graduated from the apparel & textile fashion program at NDSU and went on to study business at Minot State University, where I completed a master’s degree. With my educational background combined with my retail experience throughout high school and college, I felt confident in starting a career in the industry. I’m originally from Moorhead and always recognized the lack of apparel stores in our town. There is also no sales tax on clothing in Minnesota, so Moorhead seemed like the best opportunity to open up shop.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PERSONALITY OR STYLE OF YOUR STORE?

Our boutique style balances comfort with trendiness. We carry stylish pieces that women can actually live in. Think everyday wear with a polished, put-together feel. I only bring in fabric and styles that I personally love and would wear myself.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR BOUTIQUE FITTING INTO THE FARGO–MOORHEAD–WEST FARGO FASHION SCENE?

I find that we’re different from other boutiques in the area because we carry small batch designs from other small businesses across the United States. You can find some of the most popular boutique brands in our store but also unique styles you won’t find anywhere else in town.

DO YOU COLLABORATE WITH OTHER LOCAL BUSINESSES OR MAKERS?

Yes! Supporting other local, women-owned businesses is important to us. We carry products from two Fargo makers: 521Handmade and Homemade Cards by Melissa. You can also shop a collection of our favorite clothing items at Hair With Care salons in Fargo and Vibrant Salon in Halstad, MN. We also print some graphic t-shirt designs right here in Moorhead at Personal Touch Marketing & Manufacturing.

WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHING OR DESIGNERS DO YOU FOCUS ON BRINGING IN?

We prioritize quality and comfort. We’re always bringing in soft knits, flattering fits, and easy layers that feel stylish without trying too hard.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE TIMELESS PIECES WITH FAST-CHANGING FASHION TRENDS?

Swapping out your entire closet each season isn’t sustainable! I always start with pieces that feel classic and wearable, then mix in fun, trending details each season. It’s about finding that sweet spot between longevity and on-trend. We carry styles that feel current but that you’ll still love for seasons to come.

WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST POPULAR ITEM OR STYLE THIS YEAR?

Coordinating sets have been huge this year! Anything that combines comfort and versatility. Our matching lounge sets and cozy sweatshirts have been popular pieces at the checkout counter.

WHAT MAKES SHOPPING AT YOUR BOUTIQUE DIFFERENT FROM A BIG-BOX STORE OR ONLINE RETAILER?

Our team is small and sociable. You’re likely to shop with the same stylist

again during a future visit, and they’ll get to know your personal style and fit. We offer honest, friendly advice and love helping women find pieces they’ll actually wear and love.

HOW DO YOU GET TO KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS’ STYLE AND NEEDS?

Due to the small size of our store, we’re lucky to spend time with each customer. Over time, we remember what they’ve loved and what styles fit them well. We can even add customers to our “incoming styles” list and send them a message when something they might like comes into the store.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE FEEL WHEN THEY SHOP HERE?

I hope they feel comfortable, confident, and appreciated. There are many places in the FM area where they could spend their money. I am so thankful they are supporting my local small business, and I want them to know how much we appreciate it.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE ITEM IN THE STORE RIGHT NOW?

Our jean collection! One of the most popular items that customers mention wanting to try when they walk in the door is a new jean style. I’m honored that they come to us first and feel comfortable trusting us when it comes to trying something new. I’ve personally been loving the wide leg jeans—stop by and try on a pair or two!

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR OWN STYLE INSPIRATION?

I love sourcing new styles at market! Seeing what other buyers are wearing and what new styles are featured with our favorite brands. I also find inspiration from the women who shop here. Seeing how our customers style pieces in their own way always sparks new ideas.

OLIVE STREET

Q&A WITH OLIVE STREET OWNER MAURA HAVIG

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR BOUTIQUE, AND WHY HERE IN THE FM AREA?

I wanted to create a space where women could discover pieces that feel both effortless and elevated. We love the kind of wardrobe that works for real life but still feels special. Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo has such a strong sense of community and creativity, and I felt there was room for a store that brings a modern, curated perspective to the local area.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PERSONALITY OR STYLE OF YOUR STORE?

Sophisticated but not too serious—think minimalist silhouettes, refined neutrals, and textures that make even simple pieces feel luxe. Olive Street is for women who appreciate classic style with an elevated, modern twist.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR BOUTIQUE FITTING INTO THE FARGO–MOORHEAD–WEST FARGO FASHION SCENE?

We love a blend of big city style mixed with Midwest warmth. Our goal is to offer pieces that feel modern but

are still very wearable for everyday.

DO YOU COLLABORATE WITH OTHER LOCAL BUSINESSES OR MAKERS?

Absolutely. We love partnering with other local brands and creatives on events that include popups, wellness events, and DIY events. We love to connect with the community through shared creativity.

WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHING OR DESIGNERS DO YOU FOCUS ON BRINGING IN?

We focus on elevated basics and statement pieces that feel modern yet timeless. Many of our brands emphasize quality fabrics, clean lines, and a neutral palette.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE TIMELESS PIECES WITH FASTCHANGING FASHION TRENDS?

We build our collections around timeless foundations. We start with wardrobe builders such as basic layering pieces, beautiful knits, and classic outerwear. We then layer in seasonal trends through texture, color, and accessories. That way, our customers can evolve

their style without starting from scratch every season.

WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST POPULAR ITEM OR STYLE THIS YEAR?

Our customers are gravitating toward pieces that feel cozy but polished. We are loving the button cardigans and suede jackets this season.

WHAT MAKES SHOPPING AT YOUR BOUTIQUE DIFFERENT FROM A BIGBOX STORE OR ONLINE RETAILER?

We love the personal experience. We take time to get to know our customers and offer help if needed. We also try not to add any pressure as we want our customers to take their time, try things on, and leave feeling confident in what they choose. There is a genuine connection that you cannot replicate online. Also, everything in the store is carefully edited so you can avoid the endless scrolling or overwhelming racks.

HOW DO YOU GET TO KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS’ STYLE AND NEEDS?

A lot of it comes from conversation. We love when someone comes in with a specific need, such as a vacation, family photos, or just something to refresh their closet. Over time, we get to know their preferences, and it becomes like styling for a friend. We also love to connect with our community over social media (Instagram and Facebook). We love getting feedback from our customers on polls and posts.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE FEEL WHEN THEY SHOP HERE?

Inspired, relaxed, and seen. We want everyone who walks into Olive Street to feel completely welcome and at ease. I know boutiques can feel a little intimidating, but our space is intended to be warm and downto-earth.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE ITEM IN THE STORE RIGHT NOW?

I love this puffed bomber—it is such a fun silhouette and the faux suede feels very fall.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR OWN STYLE INSPIRATION?

I find inspiration in so many things, from interior design to movies, but I am always finding new things to save on Instagram and Pinterest. They are both such great sources for fashion inspiration.

LAURIE'S

Q&A WITH LAURIE'S OWNER LYNNE MOTTEBERG

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE OVER THE STORE?

I’m proud to say I’m the third owner. The store originally opened in 1980, and it was actually my husband’s idea for me to take it over!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PERSONALITY OR STYLE OF YOUR STORE?

It’s so much more than clothes. We’ve built amazing friendships along the way, and we truly have something for everyone.

WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHING OR DESIGNERS DO YOU FOCUS ON BRINGING IN?

We focus on unique pieces you can’t find just anywhere. Many of our vendors support small businesses and don’t sell directly online. We also buy in small quantities to keep everything extra special. Two of our top-selling designers are Joseph Ribkoff and Elliott Lauren.

PROPER

Q&A WITH PROPER OWNER TERESA O'DAY

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR BOUTIQUE, AND WHY HERE IN THE FM AREA?

I’m from Fargo and have always loved this community. It felt like the right place to start my business and bring a fresh, unique style perspective to the area. I’ve always seen personal style as a form of selfexpression, and I wanted Proper to be a space where people can explore that and feel like themselves.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PERSONALITY OR STYLE OF YOUR STORE?

Proper is modern, approachable, and a little unexpected. It’s stylish but easy, with a mix of timeless and trend-forward pieces in a really welcoming space.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR BOUTIQUE FITTING INTO THE FARGO–MOORHEAD–WEST FARGO FASHION SCENE?

When Proper opened 15 years ago, there wasn’t much like it in Fargo, and it’s been so fun to watch the local fashion scene grow since then. We’ve always aimed to stay a step ahead by bringing in pieces that feel cool and current but still easy to wear.

DO YOU COLLABORATE WITH OTHER LOCAL BUSINESSES OR MAKERS?

Yes! We love collaborating with others in the community. We’ve hosted pop-ups with local artists and makers. And even partnered with Cat’s Cradle for a kitten meet and greet! We also enjoy taking part in Downtown Community Partnership events, which are always a great way to connect with other downtown businesses and the community.

WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHING OR DESIGNERS DO YOU FOCUS ON BRINGING IN?

We focus on offering pieces that are high quality but still at an accessible price point. Our selection ranges from effortless loungewear to dresses for special occasions, with plenty in between. I love discovering new brands and interesting styles, but we also work with many lines we’ve carried for over a decade. CARMINE & HAYWORTH VINTAGE

Q&A WITH CARMINE &

HAYWORTH

VINTAGE OWNER COURTNEY SCHUR

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR BOUTIQUE, AND WHY HERE IN THE FM AREA?

I’ve always had a love for fashion and history, which led me to start selling vintage online to help pay my way through college. Growing up in Fargo, I wanted to create a space that showed my specific point of view when it came to vintage fashion.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PERSONALITY OR STYLE OF YOUR STORE?

I would describe the style of the shop as playfully timeless. Fashion should be fun, but not temporary. I want people to find something they love that they can keep forever.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR BOUTIQUE FITTING INTO THE FARGO–MOORHEAD–WEST FARGO FASHION SCENE?

That’s the twist. I don’t see us fitting into the local fashion scene because we march to the beat of our own drum. Instead of following trend forecasts, we stick to styles and items that catch our attention regardless of whether they're “in” or “out." Fashion to us means not fitting in, but creating our own space.

DO YOU COLLABORATE WITH OTHER LOCAL BUSINESSES OR MAKERS?

Collaborating with local businesses and creatives is what has made this little shop survive. We do styled shoots with local shops and photographers that show off our unique interpretation of style. My belief is you should never stop learning, and I always learn so much from the people I work with.

WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHING OR DESIGNERS DO YOU FOCUS ON BRINGING IN?

Carmine & Hayworth Vintage is a space where I want everyone who comes in to be able to experience the love and passion for what I do. I carry vintage from the 1940s to the 1990s and incorporate new fashion from other small businesses. The Indie brands we work with create garments that stand the test of time and also provide inclusive sizing for more people to enjoy. We are currently offering ethical lingerie from a New York City-based Indie brand that specializes in sizes XS- 5XL, which has been a breath of fresh air for our customers.

OWNER COURTNEY SCHUR

HOW

DO

YOU BALANCE TIMELESS PIECES WITH FAST-CHANGING FASHION TRENDS?

I don’t follow trends because it’s a never-ending cycle. The trap of fast fashion is that it’s meant to be discarded once a trend is out. I have always picked what I am drawn to for the shop and go with it. My customers are encouraged to buy what they love and what they can see themselves having for a long time.

WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST POPULAR ITEM OR STYLE THIS YEAR?

Airy, flowy, and free are the words that come to mind when thinking of our most popular styles we’ve sold this year. Our customers have wanted to maintain their style while also having comfort. From vintage to new pieces, we’ve seen a lot of flowy skirts, blouses, and dresses fly out the door. It’s hard to preserve style when wanting comfort, but the great thing about carrying pieces from a span of decades is that there’s a lot to choose from!

WHAT MAKES SHOPPING AT YOUR BOUTIQUE DIFFERENT FROM A BIG-BOX STORE OR ONLINE RETAILER?

Being a small shop, you really get to know your customers, and that’s what makes the shop feel like a community.

I would rather lose a sale than have a customer go home with something I knew they weren’t completely happy with.

HOW DO YOU GET TO KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS’ STYLE AND NEEDS?

Conversations are the best tool I use to get to know my customers. I want to hear about their experiences and frustrations when shopping because it helps me tailor their experience. Some people like to be left alone, and others want a partner to bounce their ideas off of. That’s what I’m here for!

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE FEEL WHEN THEY SHOP HERE?

I want people to feel like they left their worries at the door. I want time to stop here, so they can enjoy and immerse themselves in the experience I’ve created. I have garments owned and worn by Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds, so it’s hard not to be transported when you’re in here.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE ITEM IN THE STORE RIGHT NOW?

My favorite item in the shop is this 1950s sheer ruffle blouse. I love its versatility and how it can be layered.

INSPIRATION?

I find inspiration everywhere. I’m really inspired by people who create their looks and outfits. Almost like they’re putting together a puzzle. Finding what fits the look they're trying to create.

FOLDS OF HONOR AND D-S BEVERAGES PARTNER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Make sure to check out THe November Veterans Issue of our sister publication, Fargo INC!

his spring, the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales traveled across the country to celebrate tradition, and a mission of deep gratitude and hope. Their tour supported Folds of Honor, a nonprofit that provides educational scholarships to the families of fallen or disabled U.S. service members and first responders.

Since its founding in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded more than 44,000 scholarships nationwide, and through its partnership with Anheuser-Busch, local distributors like D-S Beverages have played a key role in sustaining that mission. Together, Anheuser-Busch, its brands, and wholesaler partners have contributed more than $33 million, funding over 6,600 scholarships for deserving students

A Local Story of Resilience and Legacy

Among this year’s scholarship recipients is Elisabeth Joanne Drewlo, a University of North Dakota law student whose father, U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Gerald “Scott” Drewlo, was permanently injured in a training accident while serving in California.

Elisabeth’s journey with Folds of Honor began, as she puts it, “with a lot of Google searches.” Searching for ways to help pay for her education, she discovered Folds of Honor and applied. “You have to submit your parent’s DD-214, a letter from the VA proving a service-connected disability—it’s a thorough process,” she said. “It’s not just the financial help,” she says. “It’s knowing that my father’s sacrifice is seen and honored—that I’m part of a bigger family that stands behind those who serve.”

A Father’s Service and Strength

Elisabeth’s father, Scott Drewlo, served with distinction, stationed in Okinawa, Japan; the Philippines; South Carolina; and California. After being injured in a training accident, he continued to serve his community in remarkable ways—first as a corrections officer, then as a volunteer firefighter, and ultimately as a police officer in Duluth, Minnesota.

During his 20-year law enforcement career, he worked his way up to become Chief of Police at the University of Minnesota Duluth, even helping to solve a cold-case homicide along the way.

“He definitely persevered,” Elisabeth said. “Even after his injuries, he never stopped finding ways to serve.”

Carrying the Mission Forward

Inspired by what Folds of Honor has done for her family, Elisabeth is now working to establish North Dakota’s first Folds of Honor chapter. North Dakota remains one of the few states without an active chapter, something

Elisabeth hopes to change.

“There are no local events or resources for recipients here,” she said. “So, I’m organizing a golf tournament in Fargo next July to build awareness and gauge support. If it’s successful, we can move forward with filing the paperwork to officially start a chapter.”

She’s already connecting with local businesses and community leaders, and D-S Beverages—the Fargo-based Anheuser-Busch distributor—has been among the first to step up in support. Through their involvement, they continue to amplify the mission: to honor the sacrifice of America’s heroes by educating their legacy.

Sign up for the Folds of Honor North Dakota Golf Tournament, set to take place summer of 2026!

D-S Beverages: Community Commitment in Action

D-S Beverages has long believed in using its platform to make a local impact. As a family-owned business and one of North Dakota’s most established beverage distributors, the company views partnerships like this as part of its civic responsibility.

“When you see what Folds of Honor does—not just nationally, but for people right here in our community—it’s powerful,” said a representative from D-S Beverages. “Education changes lives, and supporting the families of those who’ve served is something we’re proud to be part of.”

Their collaboration extends beyond financial support; through events, outreach, and awareness campaigns, D-S Beverages continues to ensure that the legacy of service is honored not only in words, but in lasting opportunities for the next generation.

November 2024: BiblioTrek

Illustrator and storyteller Mark Elton stands out for his wit, imagination, and ability to turn the whimsical into the wonderful. Whether he’s blending pop culture icons like Danny DeVito and Pikachu into one unforgettable fever dream or crafting richly illustrated books filled with fantastical creatures, Mark’s work as BiblioTrek perfectly captures the magic of curiosity and humor that defines Fargo’s creative community.

A Storyteller with Ink and Imagination

Mark describes himself as a caffeine-fueled illustrator who finds joy in cats, podcasts, and delightfully terrible movies. His art, shaped by influences ranging from Norman Rockwell to Mike Mignola, blends classic storytelling techniques with bold, comic-inspired imagination.

BiblioTrek began as a heartfelt gift—when his brother and sister-in-law were expecting their first child, Mark decided to create a unique animal book that would spark wonder instead of offering the usual cats and cows. That project became "Atypical Animals," followed by "Curious Critters," and "Fantastic Fauna"—each book an exploration of creativity and childlike fascination.

Craft, Curiosity, and Character

Mark’s work spans both 2D and 3D, and he approaches each with the same mindset: sculpting as he paints, and painting as he sculpts. His favorite pieces, “Rogues & Royals” and “Movie Night,” mark milestones in his artistic evolution. Still, the unexpected hit—“Danny Devikachu”— remains his most beloved creation, a playful hybrid that’s earned a cult following across stickers, charms, and mugs.

December 2024: Morgan’s Stained Glass

Over the past couple of years, Morgan Niederkorn has transformed the FargoMoorhead area into a kaleidoscope of color and creativity—one suncatcher at a time. Through her business, Morgan’s Stained Glass, she not only sells her beautifully crafted pieces but also teaches others the art of stained glass, spreading the joy of making something vibrant and handmade.

A Creative Journey in Color

Originally from the northern suburbs of Minnesota, Morgan’s creative spirit took shape early. From cross-stitch and crochet to ceramics and stipple drawings, she explored every medium before falling in love with stained glass—a skill she first picked up from her mom. After moving to Fargo in 2022 with her husband and welcoming their first child a year later, Morgan has found a rhythm that blends artistry, teaching, and family life.

From Hobby to Handmade Business

What began as a personal hobby soon grew into a full-fledged business. Starting with small projects and gifts, Morgan’s work quickly caught attention online and through custom orders. As her following grew, she began selling at local markets and collaborating with another artist to teach classes. Now, she balances making one-of-a-kind pieces with teaching workshops throughout the region.

Her collection ranges from classic suncatchers and decorative glass to pre-made stained glass kits and take-home mosaic kits designed for beginners. Among her most beloved creations? A stained glass Princess Peach, painstakingly handcrafted for her best friend—and her best-selling dachshund, monstera leaf, and hummingbird designs that never stay on the shelf for long.

Teaching the Art of Glass

Morgan’s love for teaching started back in Minnesota, where

MAKER

she guest taught at The Artery in Anoka. After relocating to Fargo, she brought that passion with her—hosting hands-on stained glass workshops at the Plains Art Museum, Unglued in Brewhalla, SheyWest, and other local spots. Her classes have inspired a growing community of glass artists, some of whom, like Crystal Cryptid Creations by Mindy, now sell their own work.

When asked what she enjoys most, Morgan points to the freedom and flexibility of creative self-employment—especially the ability to spend quality time with her child before diving into her craft. The biggest challenges? Keeping up with messages and emails, and recovering from an email hack in 2023 that forced her to rebuild her online presence from scratch.

January 2025: AP Creations

When you stumble upon a card featuring a balloon animal beside a disco ball and a cassette tape, you’ve officially entered the playful, colorful world of Amy Miller—the creative force behind AP Creations. Through her vibrant cards, cheeky magnets, and confetti-filled art, Amy transforms paper into pure happiness. Her work is part celebration, part nostalgia, and all heart.

A Creative Balance

By day, Amy works fulltime crunching numbers. By night (and often into the weekends), she channels her creative energy into designing cards, bookmarks, keychains, and more. A wife, mom of two, and pet lover, she’s been crafting cards for over 14 years—long before it became a business. “I couldn’t possibly use them all, but I really tried,” she said. Selling them became a way to share that joy with others.

Turning Passion into Purpose

Amy’s maker journey took off when she applied to be a vendor at Unglued Market and the Unglued Craft Fest in 2021. That acceptance was the push she needed to take AP Creations from hobby to business. Since then, she’s connected with an inspiring network of local makers while continuing to grow her brand and explore new ideas—like her latest obsession: confetti art.

Her creations span everything from punny

greeting cards to magnetic mini-golf holes (yes, really). Each design bursts with color, dimension, and personality—whether it’s a ribcage Valentine’s card that’s “a little dark but funny,” or a Father’s Day card spelling out “DAD” using actual golf holes. For Amy, the joy is in the challenge of taking an idea—no matter how wild—and bringing it to life.

From Scraps to Sparkle

In true maker fashion, Amy found inspiration in her scraps. Faced with piles of leftover paper from die-cutting, she dreamed up a way to repurpose them into something new: shredded-paper confetti art. The process is meticulous—gluing down shreds onto a board, sealing them, and layering 3D-printed lettering that she designs herself. The result? Glittering, dimensional pieces that feel alive with color and texture.“I never know exactly what I’ll get until I open the shredder,”she said.“It’s like unwrapping a surprise every time.”

Her background with 3D printing and digital cutting has expanded her creative possibilities, blending modern tools with traditional crafting. It’s proof that innovation and imagination go hand in hand—if you’re willing to experiment.

February 2025: Josh of All Trades

You’ve heard of a jack of all trades—now meet Josh of All Trades. This Fargo-based maker blends creativity, craftsmanship, and curiosity into one endlessly inventive small business. We first met Josh through his daughter, a young maker at the Unglued Craft Fest, and it turns out the creative spark runs deep in their family. A few years later, Josh has launched his own venture, transforming wood, epoxy, and 3D printing into oneof-a-kind handcrafted pieces that celebrate both artistry and exploration.

The Maker Behind the Name

Originally from the Twin Cities, Josh moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area nearly 25 years ago to attend NDSU and never left. A lifelong tinkerer and outdoorsman, he’s equally at home turning wood in his shop as he is diving deep beneath Lake Superior’s surface. “I spend a lot of time outdoors fishing, camping, and hiking,” he said. “Lately, I’ve been doing a lot more SCUBA diving— especially shipwreck diving in Lake Superior.”

From Fly Rods to Fine Craftsmanship

Josh’s creative journey began with an unexpected gift: a certificate to build his

own custom fly fishing rod. What started as a simple project quickly turned into a passion. Determined to make it completely from scratch, he bought a used lathe to turn his own wooden handle—and fell in love with woodturning.

Fifteen years later, that curiosity has evolved into a thriving craft business combining woodwork, resin, and 3D printing. Today, Josh specializes in custom lighters, pipes, pens, and topographical lake map lights—each piece blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation.

March 2025: Harlow’s Candy Shop

Get ready to sweeten your spring! Harlow’s Candy Shop has become a fan favorite for transforming everyone’s favorite treats— from Skittles to Peach Rings—into light, crunchy, freeze-dried perfection. Founded by Brittany Groshong, this local business brings a burst of fun and flavor to markets across the region, even creating special snacks for four-legged friends.

A Journey Fueled by Grit and Sweetness

Born in Grand Rapids, MN, Brittany’s path has taken her all over the country— from North Carolina’s race tracks to the bright lights of Las Vegas, but she always seems to find her way back to Fargo. A graduate of Fargo South High and NDSU, she built a career in event coordination before diving full-time into entrepreneurship. Now, she’s balancing the busy life of a small business owner and mom to her eight-year-old daughter, who competes in All-Star Cheerleading. “She keeps me on my toes,” Brittany said. “But I love balancing being a mom and running my business.”

From Jewelry to Candy Creations

Brittany’s entrepreneurial spirit started young— she launched her first business at 18, making jewelry between college classes. Over time, her creative curiosity led her to experiment with new products, and when she saw freeze-dried candy

trending online, she knew she’d found her next big idea. “I wanted to create a fun snack,” she said. “I saw freeze-dried candy on social media and knew I could expand on it.”

Today, Harlow’s Candy Shop offers an irresistible lineup: Jolly Ranchers, Nerds Gummy Clusters, Peach Rings, Skittles, and even freeze-dried fruit and dog treats. She’s also expanding into new territory with freshsqueezed lemonade, fruit refreshers, and chocolate strawberry kabobs and cups—yes, including those viral Dubai chocolate cups!

The Science (and Art) of Sweetness

Freeze drying might sound simple, but it’s an exact science. Brittany explains that unlike dehydrating, which removes up to 70% of moisture, freeze drying removes 100%, giving candy its crisp texture and long shelf life—up to 25 years when properly sealed. “If you leave it open, it’ll start to rehydrate from the humidity in the air,” she said.

Among her proudest creations are caramel cold brew M&M’s, Fruit Roll-Up nachos, and that trickybut-delicious Cinnamon Toast Crunch taffy. “Getting the flavor mix and texture right was the biggest challenge,” she said. “But it turned out amazing.”

April 2025: joyFELT LLC

There’s something timeless and joyful about the work of MaryMichael, the creative behind joyFELT LLC. Her beautifully handsewn felt flowers and whimsical home décor bring warmth, color, and a sense of handmade charm to any space. From delicate floral wreaths to play food sets that spark kids’ imaginations, MaryMichael’s creations blend artistry, craftsmanship, and heart—making felt something truly special again.

Crafting with Heart and Playfulness

Mary-Michael describes herself as an “old lady at heart”—a lover of puzzles, word games, and crafting. Growing up, her two passions were sports and creativity, and she’s found ways to keep both alive. These days, her energy is devoted to her family, exploring the outdoors with her young daughter, and, of course, crafting in the quiet hours of the day. “I spend my days going on adventures with my daughter and my nights creating,” she said. “Pretty much any free moment not spent with family is spent crafting.”

From Baptism Décor to a Blooming Business

joyFELT LLC began with a simple, heartfelt idea: decorations for her daughter’s baptism that she could cherish long after the celebration ended. That project sparked something

bigger. “I started out making crafty-looking flowers,” she said. “Then I challenged myself to make them look more realistic— and I was hooked.”

From there, she expanded to wreaths, floral arrangements, and playful felt food inspired by the sets she once made for her niece and nephew. Each piece is cut, sewn, and shaped by hand—a true labor of love.

Inspired by Nature —and a Tiny Muse

Much of Mary-Michael’s inspiration comes from the world around her: nature walks, playgrounds, and everyday moments spent with her daughter. “There’s so much beauty in our natural world,” she said. “Sometimes I’ll see something and think, ‘How would I arrange that if it were in my home?’”

Her daughter, though, remains her biggest muse—and toughest critic. “She’s my best hype woman,” Mary-Michael said “She’ll look at my flowers and say, ‘Mommy, can you make me that?’ Her play kitchen is full of prototypes.”

June 2025: Local Littles

Unglued is always on the lookout for creative ways to celebrate North Dakota and Minnesota pride, and Local Littles stole their hearts. Founded right here in Fargo by Jess Mouw and Aasta Waugh, this small but mighty business is designing the cutest state-themed bamboo pajamas that help little ones love where they live.

Meet the Makers

Jess Mouw, originally from Cando, ND, has called the Fargo-Moorhead area home since college. She now lives in West Fargo with her husband, Hunter, their son, Otto, and their dog, Fisher. Between movie nights, golf leagues, and family walks, she’s built a life rooted in connection and community—something that shines through in every Local Littles design.

Aasta Waugh is a Minnesota native and former tattoo artist who recently traded ink for illustration and entrepreneurship. Now

a full-time mom and designer, she brings an artist’s eye to the brand’s playful, handdrawn patterns. When she’s not sketching, you can find her gardening, baking, or sewing with her family close by.

Pajamas That Feel Like Home

Local Littles makes children’s bamboo pajamas featuring designs inspired by the Midwest—each one highlighting the wildlife, landmarks, and natural beauty that make our states unique.

The idea began when Jess became a new mom in 2024. As she shopped for her son, Otto, she wished for baby clothes that represented her North Dakota roots. During maternity leave, that idea became a full-fledged dream. Teaming up with Aasta, the two friends began designing cozy, high-quality pajamas that celebrate local pride—and just like that, Local Littles was born.

Why Bamboo?

It’s not just cute—it’s comfortable. Bamboo fabric is ultra-soft, stretchy, and gentle on

MAKER

sensitive skin. It’s also breathable and moisture-wicking, keeping kids cool in summer and warm in winter. “It’s perfect for growing kiddos,” they said. “And it’s mom-approved for durability and comfort.”

Designing the Details

Every Local Littles design starts with research and love. Jess and Aasta gather inspiration from local landmarks, flora, fauna, and input from friends and family who know each state best. Aasta then hand-illustrates the artwork, and the team works closely with their production partners to bring it to life. “It’s a labor of love,” they said, “but seeing it all come together is so rewarding.”

Their “Land of 10,000 Lakes” print has quickly become a bestseller, showcasing the brand’s signature mix of nostalgia, artistry, and playful color.

2025: Woke Soap

July

When Starr Backman sets up at a craft market, you can smell the magic before you see it. Her handmade soaps, incense, teas, and candles draw you in with earthy, natural scents that feel both grounding and energizing. But Woke Soap is more than a handcrafted bath and body brand—it’s the story of resilience, healing, and pride in Indigenous identity.

A Business with Purpose and Power

Founded in 2016 in West Fargo, Woke Soap began as Starr’s way to break stereotypes and share the wisdom of her Dakota roots through self-care. “I decided to break the stereotypes of Indigenous women and put myself on a limb,” she said. “It’s been a blessing to wake others up to the chemicals in their everyday products.”

Her line now includes handmade lye soaps, candles, incense, loose teas, room and body sprays, bath salts, crystal bracelets, and more—each crafted with intention and plantbased ingredients. At the heart of every product is her belief that healing begins with reconnecting to the land and to oneself.

From Prairie Plants to Powerful Products

Starr infuses many of her products with traditional medicine, often gathering ingredients herself in

the prairies near her home in Sisseton, SD, on the Lake Traverse Reservation. “Going home to harvest has been a blessing,” she said. “Being able to walk in our prairies and harvest our own medicine to infuse into our products connects me to who I am.”

Among her favorites are the Sweetgrass, Sage, Sweet Pipe Tobacco, and Cedar soaps, each rich in cultural meaning. But her best-loved creation is the Honey Drip Soap, made with honey from her family’s South Dakota bee farm. Designed to soothe dry or sensitive skin, it’s become a customer favorite for its healing properties and luxurious lather.

Her Sweetgrass Soap, one of the first bars she ever made, remains her bestseller to this day.

Strength Through Struggle

Behind Starr’s creativity is a deep story of perseverance. After opening a metaphysical shop in Dallas, TX, she faced the painful decision to close it and return home. “Sometimes life can be lifing,” she said. “You just have to take it on the chin and keep going.”

As a single mother, Starr continues to rebuild and thrive— fueled by community, family, and faith. “The most challenging part has been starting over and over again,” she said. “But I have solid supporters who uplift me to keep going. It hasn’t happened overnight—it’s been ten years in the making.”

MAKER

Expanding Creativity: BrewHollow Mini Bistro

As if Woke Soap weren’t enough, Starr also runs BrewHollow Mini Bistro, a portable coffee cart and micro bakery based in Long Hollow, SD. Her menu includes handcrafted espresso drinks named after the seven districts of the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribe, plus unique offerings like Wojapi Lemonade, RezBull Energy Drinks, and Gabubu Bread—a healthier twist on frybread infused with garlic and sage.

“Gabubu Bread has been a hit,” Starr said. “We make Gabubu Breakfast Sandwiches, Burgers, and even Pizza!” The bistro travels throughout the FM area, spreading good vibes and delicious food rooted in Dakota culture.

Where to Find Her Work

You can shop Woke Soap online or find Starr’s products in person once a month at the Global Market at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, MN. Keep an eye on her social pages for updates and market announcements— and don’t forget to check out BrewHollow Mini Bistro for a taste of her creative (and caffeinated) side.

August 2025: Free Soul Candle Co

Every candle tells a story— and for Sam, the creator behind Free Soul Candle Co, each one begins with memory, emotion, and a touch of magic. From her cozy home studio in Fergus Falls, MN, she hand-pours candles that invite people to slow down, breathe deep, and reconnect with what feels good.

The Soul Behind the Scents

Sam describes herself as a “nature-loving introverted homebody,” happiest surrounded by her husband Vince, their dogs, cats, a ball python, and a flock of quirky chickens and turkeys. Originally from St. Paul, she’s wandered far—Florida, a van life adventure, a tiny house in Colorado—but eventually found her creative roots back in Minnesota.

“When we returned home, it was under tough circumstances,” she said. “I had lost a bit of my creative spark. But that transition led to something bigger than I imagined. Free Soul Candle Co took root—and slowly, it began to grow.”

A Wax Alchemist at Work

At Free Soul Candle Co, Sam hand-pours small-batch soy candles made from organic wax, cotton or wood wicks, and non-toxic, phthalatefree fragrance oils. Many are adorned with dried botanicals—grown in her garden or sourced locally—

and crystal accents that give each one an intentional, earthy energy.

She also creates car diffusers, reed diffusers, wax melts, and room and body aroma mists, each designed to evoke what she calls “a feeling of nostalgia, magic, or memory.”

Her scent palette ranges from grounding and woodsy to bright and citrusy favorites like:

• Smudge Ritual — Patchouli, cypress, palo santo, sage, amber, and fir

• Flower Child — Grapefruit, melon, jasmine, cherry blossom

• Sun Goddess — Pineapple, mango, goji berry, driftwood

Where to Find Her Work

All of Sam’s candles and products are made from her home studio in Fergus Falls, and you can find her at craft markets, farmers markets, and pop-ups throughout the region. Keep an eye out for upcoming workshops—or book one for your next celebration, team-building day, or cozy girls’ night in.

September 2025: Esmeray Art

Local artist Anne Rumohr, the creative force behind Esmeray Art, creates pieces that both delight and empower. Her work spans a colorful range—from whimsical macaron earrings to soulful watercolor portraits and digital art that celebrates women, animals, and the beauty of everyday life. Whether it’s a llama in sunglasses or a custom pet portrait, Anne’s creations radiate heart, humor, and meaning.

Art That Empowers

Anne’s journey as an artist began early, fueled by a lifelong passion for creativity. She studied art history and illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and after years of exploring different artistic paths, she found her calling in running her own studio.

When it came time to rebrand, she wanted a name that represented transformation and strength. “Esmeray means dark moon—the darkness before a new beginning,” she explains. “That’s why my logo includes a dark moon

and a lotus flower. The lotus grows from the mud, and that symbolism really spoke to me during a big life change.”

Art became not only a career but a form of healing and empowerment. “Fifteen years later, I’m a full-time artist with the best support team—and I love meeting clients, working directly with people, and being part of this creative community.”

From Whimsy to Wonder

Under Esmeray Art, Anne creates original paintings, art prints, and handcrafted jewelry. Her jewelry— affordable, hypoallergenic, and customizable—features fun, quirky designs inspired by food, animals, hobbies, and nature. She even offers clip-on or plastic hook options free of charge, emphasizing inclusivity in her designs.

Her art, meanwhile, balances whimsy and depth. Popular prints include “Skull with Flowers,” “The Raven,” and a fan favorite she calls “The Holy Three”—a cozy still life featuring books, cats, and plants.

When asked which works she loves most, she doesn’t hesitate: “My portraits of empowering

MAKER

women. I love seeing women light up when they feel represented in my artwork.” Pet portraits hold a special place in her heart, too—especially since one of her earliest and most challenging commissions was a memorial portrait of a family dog.

Where to Find Her Work

Anne’s art and jewelry can be found online and in stores throughout the region. She sells through her website, local art markets, Unglued in Fargo, and Midtown Market in Grand Forks, with wholesale and consignment partnerships reaching beyond North Dakota.

Brenna M & Co

Meet The

MAKER

“ Do What Makes You Happy” is at the top of Brenna’s business Instagram, and as you scroll down, you find the feed full of colors, shirts, and hats featuring mental health vibes like “overthinker” or “pretty girls have anxiety too.” Her social media following is huge(!) as she shares ASMR packaging on TikTok or tries to pack an order in under 30 seconds! And she is right here in the FargoMoorhead area crafting and creating for her business—Brenna M & Co—find out more about this local maker below!

Describe what type of products you make under Brenna M & Co?

I create mental health awareness apparel and accessories, along with handsewn carry-all bags, tote bags, and crochet flowers.

Tell us how you got started with your business back in 2020!

Throughout my life, I have faced challenges with my mental health. From being a three-sport athlete in high school to competing as a student-athlete in college, the pressure to succeed often felt overwhelming. When I was sent home during my sophomore year of college, due to COVID-19, I noticed that many people around me were also struggling mentally, affected by the uncertainty and isolation

Photos provided by Ashley Morken

of the time. Back then, mental health wasn’t widely discussed, but I felt a strong desire to be part of the change and start the conversation.

What are your personal favorite items you've created so far?

My personal favorite creations so far are my makeup/carry-all bags and lip balm holders. As someone who tends to misplace things easily, I love that both of these pieces help me stay organized.

What was one of your most difficult pieces you've created?

One of the most challenging pieces I’ve created is my makeup/carry-all bags— not because they’re difficult to design, but because they take so much time and care to sew!

What is your most popular item you sell currently?

My most popular items that I sell currently are my Overstimulated t-shirt and crewneck!

What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business?

What I love most about running my handcrafted business is the freedom to be creative every single day—no two days are ever the same!

What is the most challenging thing?

The most challenging part of running my own small business is staying motivated, especially during the slower periods. But I always remind myself of my “why,” and that keeps me moving forward.

You have a super fun variety of products from apparel to crocheted flowers! Where does your inspo come from for new products you create?

I draw inspiration for new products from everywhere—both online and in the world around me.

You have a huge following on social media like Instagram and TikTok! Tell us how this has influenced your handmade business.

Social media has played a huge role in my business. I’ve built an amazing community across all my platforms, where I love sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of my day-to-day work while also showcasing my products. Whenever someone asks me how to grow a following, I always tell them to be authentic and share what genuinely matters to them. People want to see the face behind the brand—they want to relate to you. That connection builds trust and shows that the products you create are 100% a reflection of who you are.

What is a word that best describes you? Funky.

What advice would you give to someone else looking to start a handcrafted/maker business?

Try not to compare yourself to others. Businesses grow at their own pace, and that’s perfectly okay. As long as you stay consistent—no matter what you’re posting about—and keep showing up, everything will fall into place exactly as it’s meant to.

What advice would you have given yourself five years ago?

The advice I would give myself five years ago is to celebrate every small milestone, truly savor each moment, stay true to yourself, and never doubt the decisions you’ve made.
