Foundations Guide 2025
Financial Management Association of Australia

Dear Members,
Welcome to the Financial Management Association of Australia (FMAA) in 2025! Whether you’re a first-year student exploring our O-Week Stall or a returning member ready to dive into another year of networking, workshops, and (of course) duck canapés, I’m thrilled to welcome you to what promises to be an incredible year ahead.
Dating back to 1994 at the University of Sydney, the FMAA has built a proud legacy of connecting students with professionals across investment banking, consulting, asset management, professional and commercial services Our mission is to be your touchpoint for professional development and career exploration, whether that’s through meeting firm representatives, participating in case competitions, or polishing your CV. No matter where you are in your degree, we’re here to support your journey.
For first-year students, I understand that transitioning to university can feel overwhelming but don’t worry! At the FMAA, we’re committed to making this transition as seamless as possible. Through the resources in this guide, our unparalleled networking opportunities, and engaging events like workshops and case competitions, we aim to help you navigate this exciting new chapter with confidence.
Getting involved as an FMAA Subcommittee Member is another fantastic way to maximise your university experience. It’s an opportunity to collaborate with like-minded, ambitious peers while building leadership skills and making lifelong connections. Personally, joining the FMAA Subcommittee in my first year was one of the best decisions I ever made. It not only enhanced my professional growth but also allowed me to meet my closest friends at university and make memories that really made my whole university experience!
As an FMAA member, you will be invited to an array of exclusive networking opportunities where you can meet representatives from over 60 sponsor firms, enabling you to learn more about the industry and build a solid foundation as you prepare to enter the workforce. I wish you the best of luck for the year ahead, and if you see me around campus don’t be afraid to say hi!
Warm regards,
Jacinta Ma | 2025 President, FMAA Sydney

Do you have any advice for first year
Get involved! Join societies (such as the FMAA), attend professional and social events, and talk to people in tutorials everyone’s looking to make friends. Try different activities to see what you enjoy, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Uni is the best time to explore, so make the most out of it!
Favourite moment as a subcommittee member?
Favourite moment would have to be going out together as a group for dinners, events and even trips with people who you feel really comfortable with The memories and friendships you create are lifelong!
Jack Zhou Sponsorship Director
Brandon Lam Events Director
is something you wish you knew as a first
Uni is a lot less structured than high school - there’s no one keeping you accountable to go to classes or finish your homework, so your assignments will creep up on you It’s okay to take a break sometimes, but also find a great group of friends to study and go to class with to make the process that bit more enjoyable Joining the FMAA subcommittee in first year was one way I met some really intelligent, driven people to keep me on track!
Favourite study spot on campus?
Personally I love studying with natural light so I’m going to say ABS Learning Hubs (when they’re not too crowded) But when I need to lock in: Law Library (the main area with the monitors) any time of the day You should really go try it out if you haven’t yet!
Mary Tan Vice President (Sponsorships)

What advice would you give to university students looking to enter your current industry?
Be curious and take every opportunity to learn from those around you. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, it’s often where the most rewarding experiences begin.

This might sound like a silly tip, but asking your tutors and professors questions will show that you are dedicated and willing to learn. Make sure to use the Ed Discussion Board whenever you have doubts Your teachers and peers are there to help!
2 Attend PASS classes
PASS Classes are Peer-Assisted Study Sessions that are offered for most commerce units. They are a great way to revise the previous weeks content in a collaborative and non-judgemental environment! Ensure that you sign up quick as spots often run out.
Referencing is a significant part of university assignments so be sure to learn the correct referencing style to avoid losing careless marks! You can find guides with instructions on how to reference in the USYD library!
4 Join societies
Societies are a great opportunity to meet like-minded people at university and make friends. It’s also an excellent way to exercise leadership and communication skills! Explore different societies at Welcome Week and talk to the team members to see which society interests you the most.
5 Prepare for your tutorials
Many first-year subjects such as BUSS1000 have participation marks, so it’s ideal to have an understanding of the material before attending class Set aside a few hours a week doing your readings and modules for your Units of Study to ensure that you stay on top of all the content. 6 Plan your degree
Spend some time planning out your degree progression at the start of the year. This will ensure you are saving electives if you want to go on exchange and can choose the units you want to study! (i.e. some units may only be offered in one semester of the year).
All Bachelor of Commerce students are required to complete these three core units in their first year: BUSS1000, BUSS1020 and BUSS1030. A summary and study tips for these units are provided below. Note, we’ve also included BUSS1040, as it is required by most Commerce majors.
BUSS1000: Future of Business
Large focus on tutorial participation and group work
Helpful to familiarise yourself with APA referencing style
Emphasis on case studies
Prioritises application over theory Avoid defining terms and restating information in assignments
BUSS1020: Quantitative Business Analysis
BUSS1030: Accounting for Decision Making
Complete Pearson homework tasks on time
Starts off with the fundamentals but increases in difficulty, particularly after Week 6
Revise theory for finals
Important to familiarise yourself with Excel learn Excel shortcuts for exams
Keep on top of lecture and textbook readings for fortnightly quizzes
Don't get complacent especially if content seems familiar to HSC Business Comprises of an even amount of theory and numerical questions
BUSS1040: Economics for Business Decision Making
Spend time understanding and breaking down each concept in detail
Relate theory to graphs and formulae to consolidate learning Practice papers Macroeconomics content is fast-paced
1 When you begin planning your degree, it is helpful to have a look at the University of Sydney Handbook for your respective degree to identify how many units of study you must complete from various categories of subjects.
2
If you plan on going on exchange (which is a super fun and rewarding experience!), make sure you leave enough elective space to complete these units at a different university.
Consider making an Excel Spreadsheet with your intended degree progression at the start of the first year and adjust it over the course of your degree as you see fit

FMAA Portal
This year, the FMAA will be launching our own Careers Portal, which is a members-only section of the website to help you keep up to date with all of the professional opportunities available to you and up-skill yourself with some tips on how to interview, how to crack a case competition and much more!
Joining the FMAA Subcommittee offers a rewarding university experience filled with many unique opportunities. You will be able to maximise the experiences you gain from FMAA for both professional and personal development!
As a committee member, you can:
Exercise communication and organisational skills by working with a variety of directors in assisting them with their primary tasks.
Gain corporate exposure at events that are usually tailored to more senior students.
Be allocated two mentors through the FMAA internal mentorship program who can help you with academic, personal, and professional development goals
Make lifelong friends and meet new people! Everyone in the society is incredibly friendly, and are always here to provide support and guidance throughout your university journey.
