Global uncertainty and geopolitical issues are a constant threat to traditional air service capacity. In the spring of 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe, international borders were closed and a majority of the world’s commercial and private airlift was grounded. The consolidation and cancellation of air service caused by the global pandemic significantly limited travel options— especially for groups of specialized industry personnel.

Isolated locations such as islands in the southern Indian Ocean were always difficult to access but the COVID-19 pandemic greatly exacerbated the issue.

When Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping company and their group of maritime partners needed to keep their crews and ships moving in the Indian Ocean they called upon industry leader Omni Air International (OAI).

At the start of the pandemic, OAI was the first international passenger charter airline with a full COVID-19 response program. The OAI Clean Flight program instituted new policies and procedures to maintain a safe and healthy environment for passengers and crew. The program includes the utilization of electrostatic devices, EPA approved cleaning products and socially distanced cabins. As a result, OAI was able to support the requirements of Maersk and their partners in the challenging environment of the pandemic.

The opportunity to provide airlift for Maersk and their partners built on OAI’s longstanding partnership with ACC Aviation Group. This operation was a multifaced, complex logistical challenge during the height of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
