People-Operations shift away from Human Resources By: Phil Darley

From early in my interview process through today, there has been discussion about shifting away from a traditional Human Resources department to a People-Operations approach to working with integrated aspects of the employee lifecycle. The Executive Team, consisting of the Gillam family and Sid Johnston, have all shared the support of this re-alignment as Floyd’s Truck Center continues to evolve and grow. People

Paycom Update By: Phil Darley

As you read this article Floyd’s Truck Center is 6 months post Go-Live with our new Human Resources Information System, Paycom. There’s been a few bumps along the way, but the goal of a seamless transition for the employee experience has been very positive. Manager’s have had a few more challenges as we continue to learn & develop efficient work processes for recruiting, Performance Reviews, monitoring PTO requests, staff transition as managers take on temporary duties, etc.

A few key items for all employees: •

Every employee is responsible to maintain correct personal information through their ESS (Employee Essential Service) app.

This can be done through your phone or by logging on through the desktop. This information would include things like where you live, contact information, etc.

•

Paid Time Off requests – please submit this on a timely basis so your manager can Approve/Deny or consult with you, as needed.

•

Verify your Paycheck – a notice is sent out through the app on the Monday before payroll to review and approve your paycheck. If you see any errors, you’ll need to contact Payroll immediately.

Paychecks will process with or without your approval, but this gives you an opportunity to look before the file is processed.

•

Performance Reviews – Once your manager goes over your Performance Review with you, they will send them to you to review, comment and sign through the Paycom app. It is important you complete this task and return to your manager in a timely manner.

•

Revised policies, forms, and the employee handbook – When these are updated, they will be sent out to employees through the Paycom app for you to review and acknowledge receipt of; it is your responsibility to read this information. We will be having “town hall” meetings to answer questions you may have, share information, and continue to gather your input.

Updated Employee Handbook By: Phil Darley

Floyd’s Truck Center ownership and management continues to develop and grow toward a genuine people-centered culture where goals are transparent, training and coaching are continuous, and employees feel the ongoing active presence of a family business. During January & February, Sarah and Phil will be hosting Town Hall Teams (video-based) meetings for all our locations where staff can learn more about the changes to the employee handbook, policies, and other company forms. Below and to the right are a few changes you’ll find in the Employee Handbook, effective 01/2024: PTO •

PTO above 216 accumulated hours will be paid out annually in January

•

PTO requests can now be requested in one-hour increments

Additionally, a few items were deferred to the Safety Committee to discuss pros & cons, safety concerns, and OSHA-related guidelines for the use of headphones and steel-toed boots/shoes in safety-sensitive areas. Management continues to review other expanded benefit offerings and encourages employees to offer suggestions that would be beneficial to the well-being of all employees.

Dress Code Policy •

A personal hygiene section was added.

•

Boot reimbursement was added. This program was established last year to reimburse employees up to $100 for steel-toed footwear.

•

A uniforms section was added addressing customerfacing employees, and technicians laundering program.

Commission •

When an employee leaves the company, voluntarily or involuntarily, and a commission program is part of their compensation package, they must work the entire month to be eligible for their commission.

Updates •

The Training Agreement Form has been eliminated and replaced with a Training Expense Acknowledgment Form. Floyd’s Truck Center believes that investing in our employees’ professional development is important, and the previous form carried a negative connotation of lawsuits and reimbursement

to the company. Rather, management will use a modified form that helps track expenses and your work hours while at training, and simply asks you to acknowledge and have an awareness of the investment we are making in your growth.

•

New employee Introductory period established as ninety (90) days

•

There is an added section on the use of CBD oils and extracts.

•

•

If an employee tests positive during their pre-employment drug test, they will have to wait 45 days until they can re-apply and be tested again.

Management continues to support employees with a drug or alcohol problem get the help they need through treatment and full support of management and HR. Review the information in the policy to learn more.

•

Added to the definitions was “Intoxication” the condition of having physical or mental control markedly diminished by the effects of alcohol or drugs.

Alcohol & Drug Policy •

As the increased legalization of cannabis for medicinal or recreational use in states we have locations in, or proximity to states with legalized marijuana, Floyd’s Truck Center has added reference to cannabis in our policy. As a company involved in the transportation and heavy-equipment industries, we still fall under DOT regulations and safety protocols which include preemployment drug testing, post-accident drug testing, and reasonable suspicion.

YOUR OPINION MATTERS

By Sean Bolan, Director of Continuous Improvement This past year, in September of 2023, we conducted our 3rd Annual Employee Engagement Survey.

Since we started this program, the level of employee participation has continued to increase from year to year. In fact, 2023 had our highest response rate ever with 85% of all employees providing feedback – up from only 65% participation the year prior. While it was encouraging to see that the results were mostly positive, with “Overall Satisfaction” at 82% across the dealer family, we are still taking the time to drill into the details of every response, at both the company and store levels.

As shared by our Chairman, Mark Gillam, we will be looking further into how we can improve the following: •

Execution of our annual Review Process

•

Sharing of Goals and Expectations at the company, store, and individual levels

•

Recognition of hard work and Celebration of milestones and achievements

•

Focus on Internal Professional Development and Training

We know that it is sometimes hard to see the value in taking a survey and a lot of people question: Is it worth my time? Does anyone really care about what I have to say? The short answer, YES, Absolutely is it!. It is because you took the time, and shared your opinions, that we have been able recognize were we have opportunities to make Floyd’s better – for our customers, communities, and for all of you.

So, along with Mark, I would also like to thank you to everyone that participated in the 2023 Survey and we look forward to hearing from many more of you in 2024.

Floyd’s Service Completes 6-month Project on Unapplied Time Submitted By: Sean Bolan, Director of Continuous Improvement At the beginning of 2023, our Service Department identified that, in 2022, our company wide Unapplied Time average was nearly 18hrs per tech per month.

Unapplied Time can be defined as when our technicians are on duty, and we are incurring cost, but they are not actively working on a revenue earning job that can help offset cost. In addition, this is also time when we are not focused on our customers vehicles so it can also negatively impact their uptime. We had a high impact opportunity for improvement on our hands, so we set forth with the goal of, by June 2023, reducing our company wide Unapplied Time average to 15hrs, or less, Unapplied Time per tech per month, thereby increasing both Service Revenue and Customer Uptime.

In the early stages of root cause analysis, we identified that we lacked consistency regarding process and expectations for Unapplied Time, across our Dealer Family. Our first step then became working with all our Service Managers to develop a 9-store standard Process Document for managing Unapplied Time. From there, we then recognized that each individual location had their own set of challenges so, to give us the best chance of success, a decision was made to have each location work with their CICs to conduct their own structured problem solving and implement

their own corrective actions. All stores combined we identified close to 15 more root causes and corrective actions that were addressed during Q3. A few examples include:

Year over year, our monthly Unapplied Time average per tech per month came in lower, than the same month the year prior, each month since February.

•

Setting clear expectations for the use of unapplied time by our techs

•

Setting our techs up for success by making sure we have a “next job” ready after their current job and at shift start each day

•

Understanding, clearly identifying, and managing “necessary” unapplied time such as Onsite and Offsite Technician Training

So, what was the return, or value, generated by reducing our unapplied time average by 2.66hrs per tech per month? Considering our (88) technicians, this has the potential to convert (234) hours of unbillable time back to billable time each month.

Last month marked the end of the period for the initial stages of this project and June’s company wide Unapplied Time averaged 13.91hrs per tech per month and our YTD 2023 average was 15.22hrs per tech per month.

For our customers, this is additional time where we will be focused on getting their trucks back on the road – this is close to (10) days’ worth of uptime. Multiplied by a downtime cost of $1000 per day, we are potentially saving our customers $10K per month and $117K per year.

Parts Retail Upgrade in Rapid City Submitted By: Josh Vernlund, Parts Manager

DTNA Elite Support Communication board: This is my attempt to consolidate all things 5S. This board will display key items within the Parts 5S audit. More importantly, any deficiencies that are noted can be displayed, to keep employees minds conscious of corrections that need to be made or continue to focus on.

Donaldson Filter signs in our showroom allow our customers to see why we choose Donaldson and provides a brief but concise description of the filters we have on hand.

Titan Supply chain, SALE, Alliance windshield wiper displays in our showroom provides a more customized option then a plain DTNA signage. The ability to switch signs allows us the flexibility to showcase a wide variety of products that we sell.

Floyd’s Service Completes 6-month Project on Unapplied Time Cont.

•

For Floyd’s, this is additional time that can now be billed. Multiplied by our average door rate of $175 and we are potentially earning an additional $41K per month and nearly half a million dollars per year.

Overall, this was a great project that only achieved this level of success thanks to the hard work, commitment, and collaboration between all of our Floyd’s locations’ CICs, Service Managers, Service Advisors, and Technicians.

2023 CIC Mini Summit

Submitted By: Sean Bolan, Director of Continuous Improvement Last May each of our (9) Continuous Improvement Coordinators (CICs) had the opportunity to meet in Cheyenne for two quality days together; dedicated to improving themselves, and our company through Best Practice Sharing, Skills Training, and Team Building. The mini summit was facilitated by our DTNA Elite Support Manager (ESM) Jon Fox and me and included breakouts on subjects such as: Time Management and Organization, Promoting Quality Continuous Improvement Events, as well as Process Mapping and Process Documentation.

In the breakout on Time Management and Organization our ESM, Jon Fox, and the team discussed: Elements of

Leadership, the gap between our Aspirations and Reality, and then skills that can help drive successful time management.

Jon even pitted some of our CICs against one another in a head-to-head competition to see who could pick up the most colored cubes within 30 seconds. It sounds easy but there were some additional challenges; you had to use your non-dominant hand and then the different cube colors had different point values.

This was a great activity that helped showcase the skills of awareness, arrangement, and adaptation – rather than just grab as many as they could, as quickly as they could, they needed to prioritize the cubes that were worth more points, all while struggling to fit them in their hand. Jon’s breakout

was one of the favorites of the summit, for several of our CICs. Winter Verbeck, our CIC from our Scottsbluff location, stated “I am optimistic about going back and using what we learned to do some reorganization and personal scheduling.”

In the breakout on Process Mapping and Process Documentation we walked through a few exercises

designed to help us look at processes from other perspectives. In one, the CICs were broken up into teams and asked to map out the steps of a doctor’s appointment. Everyone got a good laugh as most teams added multiple “Wait,” “Wait again,” and “Wait Some More” steps to their process maps; that is until someone burst our bubble by drawing the connection to our own business and how often our own customers may be waiting on us. In another exercise, the CICs were asked to write a simple step by step process to make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. It wasn’t until everyone was done with the

writing assignment that it was revealed that now we were going to follow their instructions and make some sandwiches! It was a little messy but a lot of fun and helped illustrate the need for balance between “too much” or “too little” detail in a process.

I’ll never forget seeing Misty Dierks, our CIC from our Cheyenne location, shoving a slice of bread into the jar of peanut butter because the instructions she was reading wasn’t specific in how to “spread peanut butter on bread.”

Overall, it may sound like a lot of fun and games, but it was definitely time well spent. In addition to fun, there was also some serious discussions, candor, and self-reflection by the team. This was the first Floyd’s CIC Mini Summit that Kevin Chafee, our GM and CIC from our Casper location, has been able to attend. He stated that he “found it very valuable, more so than the [DTNA] Elite Support Summit. Interactions and getting to work face to face with everyone was great.”

Floyd’s Change Management Teams Training October Submitted By: Sean Bolan

In October we had the opportunity to bring three of our locations together at Hotel 21, in Scottsbluff, for Change Management Team Training (CMTT) and, as Coach Herb Brooks said, “Great moments are born from great opportunities.” Our Change Management Teams (CMT) from Sidney, Scottsbluff, and Cheyenne came together for two days of Team Building and training on topics such as: Time Management, Culture, CI Tools, and the Change Management Model. This workshop was facilitated by our DTNA Elite Support Manager (ESM) Jon Fox who did an excellent job of presenting the material in a way that was both engaging and informative.

The purpose of CMT Training is to provide the dealership Change Management Team with the tools required to visualize, develop, and lead an Elite Support Culture of Continuous Improvement. While the make up of our CMTs varies by location, an effective CMT consists of: Service Manager, Parts Manager, Truck Sales Manager, Body Shop Manager (if applicable),

Continuous Improvement Coordinator (CIC) and General Manager. Having a team, made up of these roles, in each of our locations gives Floyd’s the structure needed to drive a culture of continuous improvement through the dealership.

One activity of the training was centered around communication.

A select number of individuals were isolated from the

main group and then the main group was given the specific details of an incident, such as time of day, those involved, where it occurred, etc. One by one the isolated members were asked to come back to the group and one individual would relay the details to that isolated member. Then the next isolated member would return, and the prior member would relay the details that they had been given to the new returning member.

Everyone had quite the laugh as details were accidentally changed or completely

missed. What started as a detailed report with 12 specific points quickly deteriorated to having less than 4 correct by the fifth relay. While this was a fun exercise, it still taught us all an important lesson about the benefits of good communication.

Winter Verbeck, our CIC from Scottsbluff shared: “For our store, it was a great experience as…we all learned from each other and got great ideas from the other stores. The other thing that was brought up from our team, is that we (other stores)

all have the same issues we are dealing with… [we] need to be reaching out to each other more often to share ideas and ask for help. (Lean Principle #5). Of course, Jon was incredible and so positive.”

Barnes & Noble with 22 year history in Seattle Washington closes it’s doors.

The Rise and Fall of Book Sales Platforms & What You Can Learn BY: JON GILLAM In 1886, Gilbert Noble, a recent Harvard graduate, was hired as a clerk at Arthur Hinds & Company, a bookstore in New York City.

In 1894 Noble became a partner in that bookstore, and in 1917 William Barnes bought out the prior partner and the store changed its name to Barnes & Noble.

By the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Barnes & Noble was the dominant bookseller in the US. It had 725 physical stores.

It’s business strategy was sell best-seller books at low prices to

draw in customers, then provide a massive selection of additional books—sometimes 100,000 or more—and sell them at full price, more than making up for any loss

Some estimated that Barnes & Noble sold 25% of all books sold in the US. on the best sellers. As a sign of Barnes & Noble’s dominance, independent bookstores filed an antitrust lawsuit against them.

In 2012, Barnes & Noble reported sales of $7.1 Billion and a net income of $171 Million. At its peak, some estimated that Barnes & Noble sold 25% of all books sold in the US. But the tides were turning—an upstart was on the rise.

In 1994 Jeff Bezos founded an e-commerce bookseller in his garage and named it Amazon.

He had no experience selling books (or anything else), but he believed he could offer better price, speed, and convenience through an online platform. Bezos promoted Amazon as “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore.”

Many believed Amazon would fail. Critics thought Amazon could not compete on price when they would have to ship every book to someone’s home, from warehouses all across the US. They believed it would be cheaper to ship it to a centralized bookstore and have customers purchase there. And Amazon was much smaller than the competition too, so it would lose to the scale of the physical stores.

Others thought that driving to the local bookstore and buying was faster than buying on Amazon.

Further, purchasing online was too cumbersome and a new habit the customers wouldn’t adopt. And anyway, critics believed, customers enjoyed the experience of browsing through books and talking to sales associates.

Despite the naysayers, by 1997, Amazon carried more than 2.5 million book titles and sold books in all fifty states and 150 countries. In 2000, they surpassed $1 Billion in sales. And in 2007, Amazon surpassed Barnes & Noble at $4-$5 Billion in sales and never looked back. By 2018, Barnes &

Today, Barnes & Noble still exists, but it has closed 150 stores and its sales have shrunk. Other national bookstores WaldenBooks, Borders, and B. Dalton have permanently closed or filed bankruptcy. And Amazon, well, they’re doing just fine. Along with its $500 Billion in annual sales, Amazon sells more than 50% of the books in the US. Bezos must have been right, Amazon offered better price, speed, and convenience through an online platform.

Now to truck parts. Like books in the late 1990s, the parts business is going through changes.

Daimler Trucks, other OEMs, and independent parts sellers have all created their own online platforms.

MacKay and Co. expects online parts sales to be 15% of all parts sales this year. As of the writing of this, Daimler Trucks is on pace for 10% of dealer sales to go through Excelerator in 2023. And before long, it expects that to grow to 25% of its sales.

Our Wildly Important Goal (WIG) for the year for parts is to increase our parts sales through Excelerator from 1.7% to 7.0%. Excelerator is an amazing platform that allows customers, with just a few clicks,

to look up parts, check availability, see pricing, and order parts. If the customer has access to Parts Pro, they can look up parts by VIN just like our counter folks do.

Customers can also view parts and wiring diagrams.

In addition to the ease of looking up and ordering parts, Excelerator has some other benefits: • Customers can view open recalls/campaigns for their VINs •

Inner Circle Rewards, a DTNA discount program that replaced Truck Bucks, is only available through Excelerator

What does Floyd’s mean to you?

Floyd’s is like a home away from home to me. I look forward to going every day because the people I work with are like family. I used to work for Jack’s and I had to leave to fulfill family obligations but I looked forward to my opportunity to come back. Now it’s a different name, but still the same family. I look forward to my future years with this company and eager to grow and learn together.

haven’t really had any “events” so to speak but I do enjoy our morning huddles.

What are the toughest challenges you’ve had at work?

I’d say my toughest challenge has been trying to stay upbeat when it gets busy and things go awry but my team is always willing to jump in and help pep me back up. Also learning to use a new computer system takes a bit of time and repetition and can be a little overwhelming at first.

How would you describe your job to a class of kindergartners?

I get to hang out with my friends, meet new people almost daily, find parts for the big trucks so they can get fixed, because it’s super important to keep the trucks moving down the road so they can supply everyone with stuff we need and want.

Sometimes people even bring their animals in for us to see. I also get to organize stuff and make lists, because that’s something I like to do.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include fishing, camping, hunting, crossstitching/needlepoint, riding 4-wheelers/side-by-sides, shooting, and pretty much anything that gets me outside.

What was your last adventure?

My last adventure was deep sea fishing off the coast of Oregon.

We caught 5 halibut in total and everyone gave us their fish.

While on this adventure we got to go to Astoria and do the Goonies tour, which was a blast.

We had a campfire on the beach and whale watching in Depoe Bay. We went to the lighthouse and watched the California sea lions lounge in the sun. We also went to the Newport Oregon aquarium, the Tillamook Cheese Factory, and the Tillamook Air Museum.

What’s the most exciting thing you are working on right now?

The most exciting thing I’m working on right now is my upcoming wedding on August 5th. We will honeymoon next year in Scotland but for now all the planning and excitement is the wedding.

What was your first job?

My first job was growing up as a farm kid, but actual monetary job was a file clerk for

the state of California at 15.

What’s your superpower?

My superpower is being an empath.

What skill do you think everyone should learn?

The skill everyone should learn is honest adult communication.

Depending on the situation or circumstances I’m faced with depends on who I look to for needed motivation.

If I ever won the lottery, I would call everyone I know and ask to borrow money from them. Their response will dictate what I do in the future with my winnings.

One item I can’t live without is probably a scrunchy or clip for my hair because it gets out of control some days.

If you could invite anyone dead or alive to dinner who would it be and why?

I would invite my mom who past away from suicide in 2006 so I could spend just one more dinner with her and share all about the kids and grandkids,

Shrimp Stuffed Shells Submitted by Lisa James:

INGREDIENTS • 1 box large shell noodles cooked as instructed • 40xl shrimp cooked • 1.5 packs cream cheese (12oz total) • 1 stick of butter • 2 cups heavy whipping cream • 2 tbsp garlic salt • 1 tsp parsley • 1 & 1/4 tsp black pepper • 1/2 tsp minced garlic • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • 1 full cup of Parmesan or Parmesan Romano cheese • Optional: 1/4 cup real bacon bits STEP 1 Take your cooked shrimp and process it in a food processor until crumbled. Mix shrimp and 1 block cream cheese thoroughly, then add 1 tbsp garlic salt, 1 tsp parsley, 1 tsp black pepper and mix well. Set aside.

STEP 2 Cook noodles as instructed on the box. Rinse noodles in cold water as soon as they’re done and drain.

STEP 3 Preheat oven at 375⁰ Stuff noodle with shrimp Mix then wrap a 2nd noodle around the top, encasing the mix. Set in a deep 9x13 baking dish.

STEP 4 In a medium saucepan on medium heat melt 1 stick of butter, 1/2 brick (4oz) cream cheese, 2 cups heavy whipping cream.

Whisk slowly until it’s all melted and smooth Add 1/2 tsp minced garlic. Stir for another full minute Add 1 tsp garlic salt, 1 tsp Italian seasoning, 1/4 tsp pepper.

Mix well. Turn heat down to simmer and add 1 full cup of your chosen cheese, Optional:add 1/4 cup real bacon bits.

Stir and cook for another 5 minutes.

STEP 5 Pour sauce carefully over stuffed noodles making sure to coat each one. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes...When the top starts browning, they’re done.

INGREDIENTS • 1 cauliflower, broken into florets • 100ml extra virgin olive oil • 250g good bread, such as sourdough or ciabatta • 2 red chillies, halved, deseeded and finely chopped • 4 garlic cloves, finely sliced • 8 anchovies, finely chopped • 35g raisins, soaked in just-boiled water and drained • 1 tbsp capers, rinsed of salt or brine • 4 tbsp roughly chopped flat leaf parsley • 5 radishes (preferably French breakfast radishes), finely sliced • 1 tsp white balsamic vinegar or white wine vinegar • Juice of ½-1 lemon STEP 1 Steam

the cauliflower until it’s just tender (be careful not to overcook it), then set aside.

STEP 2 Tear the bread into small chunks and heat 3 tbsp of the olive oil in a large frying pan. Fry the bread over a medium heat (in batches if it’s easier) until it’s golden all over – each batch will take about 4-5 mins to get a good color.

STEP 3 Put all the bread back into the pan and add the chillies, garlic and anchovies to the pan (with another tablespoon of oil if necessary) and sauté for a further 2 mins, making sure the garlic doesn’t get too dark. It should be golden, not brown.

Tip the bread mixture into a broad shallow serving bowl and add the raisins, capers and parsley.

STEP 4 Add the rest of the olive oil to the frying pan and, over a high heat, fry the cauliflower until tinged with gold. You want a really good color. Put the cauliflower in the bowl with the bread mixture, add the radishes, balsamic vinegar and the juice of ½ lemon and toss everything together.

STEP 5 Season, but be careful about how much salt you use because of the anchovies. Taste to see if you need more lemon juice, or even more olive oil, and serve warm.

In my short time here, I have only been around for a single company event: an appreciation lunch.

What are the toughest challenges you’ve had at work?

The toughest challenges I have faced so far while in my current position has not had anything to do with work, but convincing some of my younger children that I need to go work in the morning and that I will come back.

How would you describe your job to a class of kindergartners?

My coworkers order things that they need or want. I make sure that we got all of the items that they wanted and then I go and hide them throughout the building.

What are your hobbies?

Coding, Rock Carving, Board/Card Games, Reading, and Lutherie (though I have not made anything in almost 20 years).

What was your last adventure?

Life is an adventure and I am still living it... with that said, before any of my children were born I spent three months living in Waikiki learning to build

‘He’s one of a kind’: Lowinske guides youth to success

Rock Springs - 19 Yrs of Service - General Manager ROCK SPRINGS — The Rocket Miner’s first Unsung Hero for the holiday season is Heath Lowinske, a Rock Springs resident and general manager of Floyd’s Trucking.

But that’s not why he was nominated as an Unsung Hero this year.

Lowinske serves as scoutmaster for Scout BSA Troop 1869, an assistant scoutmaster for Scout BSA Troop 8 and the Order of the Arrow advisor for the Jim Bridger District. He has been volunteering for Troop 8 for more than a decade and began volunteering for Troop 1869 in

2021. He received the District Award of Merit, which is the highest honor a scout district can bestow upon a volunteer, in the fall of 2022.

Lowinske, according to Reliance resident Joeleen Levenson, “has impacted countless lives during his many years in scouting.”

Levenson, describing Lowinske as a humble man who does a lot for the community and expects nothing in return. “He is a mentor to so many, including my own son.”

She noted that even when his own son aged out of scouting about four years ago, Lowinske continues to volunteer.

Lowinske, a 1990 Rock Springs High School graduate, has lived in Rock Springs since he was six years old. Although the company has changed its name and location over time, he has been working for Floyd’s Trucking for 19 years.

“He spends a great deal of time, including his vacation time, volunteering in the community and helping kids,” said

He admitted that he wanted to be a soccer player more than being a boy scout member when he was younger. Once his son Garrett became a scout, however, Lowinske became involved as a volunteer, then a leader and eventually as a scout master.

“I decided to stay with it. I like it,” said Lowinske, noting that only he has been with Troop 8, but he helped form Troop 1869, which welcomes female and male members, three years ago. “A cub master had told me that her daughter never had a place to go for scouting, so we got together and started Troop 1869 with five girls. Now, it’s up to nine.”

What stands out to Lowinske about Rock Springs is “how willing people are to jump in and help others.”

“When someone needs help, there seems to be plenty of people who are willing to help,” he said. “Sometimes, I wish we could more or notice they need help before they have to ask for help.”

He added that he worries about the less fortunate after the holidays.

“What about the rest of the year?” he asked, pointing out that they still need necessities after the new year. “Some people are still facing those struggles in June, after school is out and their kids are at home. They need assistance all year around, but it’s hard. I’m

hoping we can have events like Scouting for Food during the warmer months.

“We always have fun doing our community projects.

He mentioned that scouting teaches life skills and leadership.

“If they’re involved, they won’t get into trouble.”

Lowinske chuckled as he recalled that he’ll retire every time his group ages out of scouting, but he “is still there,” adding that as of now, he has no plans to part with scouts.

He was telling a customer not long ago that he’s “the oddball in his family” since his father, sister and wife are teachers. The customer pointed out that being a scout leader makes him a teacher too.

“I didn’t think about it that way,” he admitted. “I thought I was just helping the kids. I didn’t see myself as a teacher while I was doing it.

“I guess scout leaders are teachers.”

Being a scout leader is not a paid position; they are volunteers.

He said, “Watching a scout succeed on something they’ve been struggling with and the smile on their face is how we get paid. They’re like your own kids; you enjoy watching them succeed and it makes you happy knowing you’re a part in helping them get to that level.”

“They learn camaraderie because they’re not working alone; they work with multiple other scouts so they’re learning teamwork too,” he added.

Lowinske has also been a volunteer firefighter for Sweetwater County Fire District No. 1 during the past three years.

“I enjoy it because it’s always a new experience and like scouts, the firefighters will always have your back.”

Rock Springs resident Markae Lester admires Lowinske for “the vital role” he’s had in her daughter’s life. She said that when her daughter, Tiana joined Troop 307 and Lester said that was a difficult time because her grandfather had passed away.

He had inspired Tiana to join scouts.

“Heath taught her it doesn’t have to be a sad time,” said Lester.

“She can embrace his memory and keep pressing on because that’s what he would have wanted her to do.”

Lester added, “Heath has been a huge part of her success, and we absolutely adore him.”

She mentioned that he had prepared her to deal with everyday life.

“She’s now comfortable living on her own and going to college,” she noted. “Heath is amazing. If there was a problem, he’d pick her up and remind her not to give up.

“He is one of a kind.”

Duck Draw HQ take over

Floyd’s Truck Center - Scottsbluff is a Pacesetter business for United Way of Western Nebraska. Each year there is a Duck Draw where thousands of ducks are sold and then winners are drawn for prizes.

The top prize is always a car donated by a local car dealership.

Floyd’s hosts an on-site duck sale event each year with a match for all employee purchases. We had our best year of sales this year with $1,115 in ducks purchased by employees and the match from Floyd’s of $1,115 for $2,230 being donated to United Way. Being a Pacesetter also allows us to decorate a duck for display at the Quackers and Cheese event open to the community. This year’s theme for the event is “Magic is Caring”. Robyn Foral and Carli Verbeck completed the project with Rhonda Leis and Wendy Closson contributing ideas.

Taking care of business One Ditch at a time

There are many ways to build a stronger work team. Our Belgrade location built teamwork recently by joining an ongoing service project that benefits the local community at the same time.

A three-fourths-mile segment of I-90 in Montana was recently adopted by our Belgrade team in an ongoing service project. This year a team of eight dedicated one of their Saturdays to the latest clean-up.

Our team found that there was a ton to clean up, they picked up so much litter, they ran out of bags!

Striking out Hunger In Ft. Pierre

At the end of March, a local company had a fundraiser: CHS Harvest for Hunger. They had companies pay a certain amount for a team of 5 to bowl. We had 2 teams, Team 1 included Pete Townsend, Justin Jones, Tim Jones, Joe Block and Jackie Rounds; Team 2 included Nathan Brandner, Cassidy Newbold, Trace Newbold, and Trevor Even. One of our teams won 4th place! Titan Machinery, Butler Machinery, Sioux Nation, Inland Truck Parts, CHS/Midwest Coop, and a few others filled the bowling alley from 5:30 pm to 8pm, it was a wonderful show of support in the community.

2-3 times a year Lake Area Tech, Watertown, SD holds either Junior Tech Day or Senior Tech day. Any high school junior or senior are invited and/or welcome to tour the school and the areas that they are interested in. April 12, 2023 I set up a table with information for hiring possibilities. I have the DTNA video that shows us how we do more than just build trucks. I believe Cody Bohl and Jason Weeda showed us this video when they went to each facility with the WIG/Efficiency/ Proficiency demonstration. The other video is one a Freightliner video that is in our onboarding process. I have these loaded on my laptop and continuously show them for the 4 hours I am there. I talk to the kids who come by and let them know what options we have in the world of Freightliner and our specific 9 stores.

There was a young lady going through the diesel program and I talked to her all the times I was there.

She recently told me that she was a service advisor at the Peterbilt in Watertown. She had said I was her inspiration to go to that part of the business. Last time I saw here, I told her that her diesel tech experience will help her in the service advisor area and getting the right information from the customer to the techs. I have used her as an example to some other students I talk to.

Kealan Hawley is first GHS and WNCC Dual Graduate By: Ryan Murphy, Rural Radio

A senior at Gering High School is getting lots of recognition after becoming the first ever dual graduate from GHS and Western Nebraska Community College.

Back in early May, Kealan Hawley was honored at a ceremony to be the first Gering student to earn their diploma and associates at the same time.

Principal Mario Chavez says the District couldn’t be more proud for this milestone.

Hawley focused on the Diesel Tech pathway and says the intense work he’s put in over the past few years was all worth it as he reaches the finish line. He has been working with Floyd’s Truck Center in Scottsbluff as part of the Diesel Tech program, and he says he’ll continue working there after his graduations.

Testing, testing, 1..2..

Floyd’s Kubota in Ft. Pierre just acquired a new AW dynometer. It is a PTO Dyno that allows you to see what engine and PTO horsepower are. It can tell if the tractor is putting out the numbers it should according to the equipments ratings.

Floyd’s Truck Center Little League takes the field!

Clay Walker in the house?

At the beginning of August, a white converted coach bus broke down and was towed to our facility. We found out that Daniel drives this tour bus for Clay Walker’s band. Me being from Texas was totally thrilled that this bus was here, although it would have been better had I gotten to see Clay Walker himself.

We got the bus running only to find out that when the driver got in it to leave it acted up again.

Unfortunately, our schedule did not permit us to work on it for another couple of days. They flew a mechanic of their choice from Nashville to Pierre to work on the bus in a hotel parking lot.

The mechanic came by and asked what we did and he compared notes with our service department and mechanic that

worked on it.

Justin Boyer (mechanic from Nashville) got it working enough from electrical problems to get it back to Nashville. Mr. Boyer was very thankful for our help and actually sent in a positive feedback for the Ft. Pierre mechanic (Matt Miller) and the service writers.

Take 5? More Like it takes 5...

After Rapid’s Customer Appreciation event, Sid and Marvin braved the heights to hang the 75th Anniversary flag in our showroom. Jeff and Jackie made sure Sid’s ladder was steady, and I had a foot on Marv’s. Sid even took out his phone to use as a make shift hammer to get the push pin securely in the wall. It takes at least five to make sure the job’s done right.

We had wonderful support throughout all our stores with reaching out into our community to have thank you sheets made for Truck Driver Appreciation Week. Top thankful notes where for chocolate, chicken nuggets, family and games.

Other Notable mentions included being thankful for their beds, food on the table, safe roads for truck drivers, their teachers, and for helping Santa make all his deliveries.

It’s estimated that we had a little over a thousand sheets completed company wide!

My semi blew the radiator just coming into town and I was able to limp it up to Floyds.

This is the second truck of mine that they’ve worked on. They always provide quick fast and efficient service. I took my truck in on a Thursday with a blown radiator and they cleaned everything up and replace the radiator and had it back to me Friday afternoon.

If my wheels aren’t turning then I am not earning. And they understand that concept and get you in and out as fast as they can, I will continue to keep coming back.

Everything is nice with gingerbread spice The 1st annual Floyd’s Rock Springs Gingerbread house competition !

I think this may have to become an annual event for our customers to vote on and the fun we had in displaying them in the store.

1st place: #10 2nd place: #7 3rd place: #4 There was a one vote difference between these two fierce competitors. First place received a $100 gift card and second place received $50 cash.
