RISE AND BUILD:
TACKLING PROSPERITY FROM THE GROUND UP
Mind-blowing. That might be the best way to describe the way we rang in 2025. A tumultuous entry into the New Year with major events unfolding across the country—New Year’s Eve violence, wildfires in LA, mid-air collisions, and the inauguration of Donald J. Trump. Despite the chaos, I was looking forward to a hopeful, even prosperous year. That hope was fueled by the honor I received on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day from the World Arts Foundation—a Lifetime Achievement Award, given to those in our Black community who have dedicated themselves to advancing the agenda and outcomes for our people. Standing alongside a cohort of my peers, I was humbled and proud. But the moment was bittersweet.
Because while we were celebrating Black excellence, across the country, our 47th president was being inaugurated. By the end of the day—on Dr. King’s day, no less—he had already signed dozens of executive orders. One gut punch after another. DEI? Gone. Deportation orders? Signed. Policies that shaped access and opportunity are being wiped out with the stroke of a pen. Reality hit—we are not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy.
The truth is, it’s not just about what’s happening in the world—it’s about the state of mind you’re in when you receive the information. If you’re already in emotional wreckage, and chaos comes knocking, you’ll crumble. But if you stay focused, balanced, and protect your peace, you can engage in a rhythmic tango with life where you are neither victim nor
And now, as we pull back the blinds in 2025, we launch our first issue of the year: 24 Ways to Get Rich. But let’s be real—wealth is about more than money.
And that’s the heart of what this issue is all about
In our interview with Dr. Joe Dispenza, we explore the power of mind over matter. After a catastrophic accident that shattered his
In the heart of Portland’s African American community stands the Miracles Club, a Black-led recovery center that has served as a lifeline for over three decades. Founded in 1993 by three men seeking to create a safe space for Black individuals in recovery, the Miracles Club addresses systemic inequities that have long marginalized African Americans in traditional addiction
treatment. Today, it continues to expand its impact, offering culturally responsive, peer-supported services that empower individuals to reclaim their lives while addressing broader community challenges, including homelessness.
Portland's homelessness crisis has reached alarming levels, exacerbated by the fentanyl epidemic and the
possession. Communities, especially Black neighborhoods, are bearing the brunt of these intersecting crises. Tents line city streets, businesses report rising break-ins, and families face daily reminders of the trauma wrought by addiction. Amid these challenges, culturally responsive organizations like the Miracles Club provide a much-needed bridge between harm reduction and recovery, offering solutions tailored to the unique needs of Black communities.
“Our people are dying, often indoors and unseen,” says Executive Director Julia Mines. “Fentanyl has infiltrated every corner of our community, but the response has not been equitable. Traditional treatment centers don’t understand our history, our trauma, or our needs. That’s why Miracles exists—to meet our people where they are and bring them where they need to be.”

MIND OVER MEDICINE:
HOW DR. JOE DISPENZA IS REWIRING REALITY
BY MICHELE DARR PHOTO CREDIT: EL TIEMPO
You’ve heard it before: “Mind over matter.” But what if that wasn’t just a catchy saying? What if your mind could actually reprogram your body, heal your illnesses, and even transform your entire life? Well, guess what? It can. Dr. Joe Dispenza is out here making what sounds like magic a reality—and the science behind it is not only real, it’s life-changing.
Let’s cut to the chase: Dr. Dispenza is a living testament to what happens when you take control of your mind. In 1986, this guy got hit by a car while riding his bike, shattering multiple vertebrae in his spine. The prognosis? Permanent paralysis, a life in a wheelchair. Instead of doing what most people would do—roll over and let the doctors cut him open—Dr.
Dispenza did something wild: He decided to meditate his way out of it.
No seriously, meditation. With a spine that looked like a jigsaw puzzle, he turned to his mind to heal himself. Just weeks later, he was walking again. That’s not a typo. Walking. Again. His story set him on a mission to figure out exactly how the mind and body are connected—and how you can harness that power to heal.
Here’s the kicker: Neuroplasticity. This isn’t just another buzzword— this is science-backed, brain-altering magic. In simple terms, neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself. We’re talking re-wiring your brain like it’s an old computer that needs a system upgrade. Dr. Dispenza and other experts have proven that the brain doesn’t just passively sit there;
it adapts based on what you feed it— physically, emotionally, and mentally. So, the thoughts you’re having today? They’re literally changing your brain’s structure.
Here’s some cold, hard science for you: a study in Nature Reviews Neuroscience showed that neuroplasticity isn’t just something that sounds cool in theory—it’s something that happens when your brain is stimulated in specific ways. When you meditate and shift your thoughts, you actually improve how your brain functions. It’s a literal upgrade to your emotional and physical state.
Dr. Dispenza teaches us to tap into this superpower by using meditation, mindfulness, and focused intention. He’s not just talking about positive
STRIDES TOWARD TRUE WEALTH:
HOW THE MLK DREAM RUN INSPIRES PROSPERITY BEYOND MONEY
BY FAWN ABERSON PHOTO CREDIT: FLOSSIN STAFF
We often define wealth in dollars, houses, or stocks. But what if we shifted that lens? What if wealth was about the strength of our community, the resilience of our health, and the legacies we leave for future generations? This is the question that the MLK Dream Run boldly answers each year.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” And the MLK Dream Run embodies this truth. It’s not just a race—it’s a movement. Every step taken on that course represents a deeper commitment: to justice, to equity, to prosperity for all. This event
proves that the path to wealth isn’t just about what you earn—it’s about what you build together.
The Dream Run’s Real Wealth Formula
It’s impossible to stand at the starting line of the MLK Dream Run and not feel the energy of something bigger. This isn’t just an event; it’s an ecosystem—one that uplifts small businesses, empowers youth entrepreneurs, and brings families together for a common cause.
“Wealth isn’t just about money. It’s about creating spaces where opportunity flows freely and progress
is shared,” states Race Organizer John Washington, SDBA Executive Director.
Take, for example, the Soulful Market, a showcase of entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. Here, local vendors— from handcrafted artisans to youth startups—get more than just a table to sell their goods. They gain exposure, make connections, and ignite possibilities for generational wealth.
Then there’s the course itself, where runners of all ages take to the streets of Portland’s historic Soul District. This shared journey turns into an act of unity. Neighbors cheer for neighbors. Families cross finish lines
FOOD NOT PHARMA:
TAKING BACK YOUR POWER WITH NUTRITION AND MINDFULNESS
BY MICHELE DARR
DESIGN MICHAEL AL-JIBOORI
When Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said, “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food”, he wasn’t just offering some quaint, ancient advice—he was giving us a powerful blueprint for true healing. Hippocrates understood something profound that we’ve largely forgotten today: the body has an extraordinary ability to heal itself, but only when given the right fuel. That fuel comes from whole, unprocessed foods—the kind that nourish, restore, and fortify, rather than the chemicalladen pills that perpetuate a cycle of dependency.
We need to talk about the elephant in the room—the pharmaceuticalindustrial complex that’s not just failing us, but actively contributing to our suffering. This is a system built on profit, not health. The reality is, we are trapped in a vicious cycle of dependency on drugs that often make us sicker rather than heal us, and it's time we finally face the truth: the forprofit healthcare system is at the heart of our illness. It's a system riddled with conflicts of interest, where too many
doctors are profiting from the very drugs they prescribe.
Here’s what we know: the more we rely on pharmaceutical drugs, the more we fall into a pattern of dependence, and the more drug companies profit. It’s no coincidence. Doctors today are making more money from pharmaceutical companies than ever before—and it's not just a handful. In fact, studies have shown that the vast majority of physicians have financial relationships with drug companies. According to a 2013 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, nearly 1 in 5 doctors reported receiving payments from pharmaceutical companies, with a significant portion of their income coming from these payouts. And it’s not just a small slice; these payments can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars for individual doctors, depending on the specialty and the volume of prescriptions written.
This is where things get dangerous. The system is designed to keep us on the hook. Instead of exploring natural, non-pharmaceutical ways to heal the body and mind, doctors are incentivized to prescribe drugs, which keep patients coming back for more prescriptions, more doctor visits, and more profits for the system. It’s a cycle of dependency that is not in the interest of your health, but in the interest of profit margins.
Take, for instance, the opioid crisis. A huge contributor to the current addiction epidemic was driven by drug companies aggressively marketing opioids to doctors, offering incentives, gifts, and bonuses for prescribing
them. According to a 2019 report from The New York Times, more than 200,000 Americans died from prescription opioid overdoses between 1999 and 2019—an outcome driven, in part, by the enormous financial incentives pharmaceutical companies offered doctors to push these highly addictive drugs.
But this isn’t just about opioids. The entire system is built on a foundation of pushing drugs over natural healing methods, even when those methods may be safer and more effective. The issue is systemic. A study by ProPublica revealed that nearly 60% of doctors in certain specialties were receiving direct financial payments from pharmaceutical companies, and more than half of these physicians admitted they felt no obligation to disclose these relationships to their patients.
This, of course, is not just a matter of money. It’s a matter of trust—trust that is systematically eroded when pharmaceutical companies control the narrative, when the doctors we turn to for help are financially incentivized to offer treatments that may not be in our best interest. And the harm doesn’t end there. As we continue to rely on pharmaceuticals to manage symptoms, we often overlook the true root causes of disease—many of which can be addressed through nutrition, mindfulness, and natural remedies.
This is why the shift toward a more holistic approach to health is not just a choice—it’s a necessity. The way forward lies in recognizing the power of natural healing, in reclaiming our health from a system that prioritizes
profit over wellness. This shift isn’t just about rejecting harmful pharmaceuticals. It’s about embracing a new way of being, where we focus on prevention, nutrition, mindfulness, and therapies that empower our bodies to heal themselves from the inside out.
Neuroplasticity, for example, shows us that we have the power to retrain our brains—to break free from patterns of illness and stress, and to cultivate resilience and vitality through mindfulness and meditation. Dr. Joe Dispenza, a pioneer in the field of neuroplasticity, explains that by actively changing our thought patterns, we can literally rewire our brains to promote healing. When combined with the right foods—real, nourishing, whole foods—we can create a healing environment within our bodies that pharmaceutical drugs simply can’t replicate.
Hippocrates’ wisdom still rings true today: Food is medicine, and when we make the shift to using food to nourish and heal, we are tapping into a power that pharmaceuticals can’t offer.
This isn’t a fringe movement. This is the future of health. It’s a future where we take responsibility for our own well-being, and where we demand a healthcare system that aligns with our true needs. No more being trapped by a system that profits from our dependency. No more doctors in bed with pharmaceutical companies, prescribing drugs instead of offering real solutions.
We don’t have to keep living this way. The proof is in the research, the science, and the growing body of evidence that natural remedies, mindfulness practices, and the science of neuroplasticity can heal us in ways
that pharmaceuticals never will. The time for change is now.
We have the power to break free. It’s time to embrace a more holistic approach to healing, to say no to the pharmaceutical grip and yes to a life powered by food, mindfulness, and self-healing.

chronic stress and a perpetual sense of never being enough. It disconnects you from your authentic self by requiring external validation over inner harmony and self-acceptance.
I don’t have enough: Hoarding resources due to past scarcity experiences fosters a mindset of lack and prevents you from fully enjoying and sharing your abundance. These beliefs are not true beliefs but unconscious wounds that hinder personal growth.
Unpacking the Trauma Blocking Your Abundance
A key psychological mechanism is the Reticular Activating System (RAS), a network in the brain responsible for filtering information and prioritizing what we perceive as relevant. The RAS reinforces our unconscious trauma beliefs by filtering out opportunities for financial success. To break free from this cycle:
1. Meditation enhances neuroplasticity: Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections that are stimulated by experiences, learning, and injury, Forming new neural connections and cultivating awareness of unworthiness beliefs through mindfulness practice helps us to observe these beliefs without judgment, unraveling their hold.
2. Reflect without judgment: Reframe challenges as opportunities for abundance, and align with your authentic self to cultivate deep, lasting fulfillment of your life purpose.
If you think you can, you’re right.
3. Avoid comparisons, redefine your success: Shift focus from external validation to internal fulfillment. Take control or allow yourself to remain in victim consciousness based on Internalized belief systems of not being enough.
4. Foster gratitude and selfcompassion: Transform scarcity to abundance and potential by nurturing a sense of already being wealthy and worthy. This empowers and activates RAS to recognize opportunities aligned with your highest aspirations.
5. Surround yourself with abundance mindsets: Learn from those who embody it. This creates an atmosphere that makes it possible to embrace a proactive approach to creating and seizing opportunities.
If you think you can’t, you’re right.
6. Create win-wins: Shift from competing to collaboration. By focusing on mutual benefits and shared goals, you build stronger relationships and foster a more supportive environment that drives collective success.
7. Continuously train your mind to see more options, more choices
and more resources: When we focus on one thing, we lose sight of other possibilities. Embracing a broader perspective allows for creative problem-solving and opens doors to innovative solutions that we might otherwise overlook.
8. Feeling deeply: Feelings are the energy driving thought patterns which either deplete or restore the body's energy. Since you become what you think, eliminating the emotions behind negative thoughts can neutralize the energy attracting negativity.
We often mistakenly equate wealth solely with money, but true abundance is a rich tapestry woven from opportunities, meaningful connections, and wisdom. To transcend feelings of unworthiness and scarcity, we must embrace our inherent worth, cultivate a spirit of gratitude, and expand our mindset. These transformative steps are essential for reprogramming the Reticular Activating System (RAS), liberating ourselves from limiting beliefs, and opening the door to a life brimming with genuine abundance.

MONEY, FEAR, & THE RISE OF MODERN TYRANNY:
HOW THE ELITE’S PLAYBOOK IS RUNNING THE SHOW
BY MICHELE DARR PHOTO CREDIT: RYAN INZANA (COVER / EVAN VUCCI (PHOTO)
Money isn’t just a tool of trade or a weapon of inequality—it’s the linchpin in a much larger system of control, and the elites know exactly how to use it to keep you in line. They don’t just hoard power through wealth—they use it to manipulate entire societies, forcing you into their narrow, dogmatic political systems that offer no real difference, no real choice.
In reality, money holds no inherent value. It’s merely a system of trust, a
shared belief in its worth, manipulated by a small group of powerful elites who control its flow. The origins of money lie in the need to facilitate trade, replacing the inefficient barter system. But over time, money evolved into something far more insidious. It became a tool to control resources, determine who gets opportunities, and maintain deep socio-economic divisions. Today, central banks—often influenced by financial giants and government policies—control
money creation, distribution, and value, keeping the broader population dependent on a system they do not control.
It doesn’t stop with money. The elites use fear, terror, and war as their weapons to maintain dominance and keep the masses in line, dutifully paying their taxes. The endless taxpayer-funded wars and savage military campaigns abroad, paired with the increasingly militarized law
enforcement at home, are all part of the same scheme.
Overseen by a surveillance state with an iron grip on civil liberties, the elites are using violence and intimidation to control every aspect of your life. They want you terrified—scared to speak out, scared to resist. Any attempt to push back is painted as a threat to "order," ensuring you remain too fearful or too beaten down to do anything about it.
Money isn’t just a tool of trade or a weapon of inequality— it’s the linchpin in a much larger system of control, and the elites know exactly how to use it to keep you in line.
The rise of incoming President Donald Trump is indicative of the dangerously precarious stage we are currently witnessing— a power grab that has been in the works for generations. Administration after administration have engaged us AND our tax money in carrying out unchecked imperial wars and genocides abroad and brutal crackdowns on civil liberties at home, leaving the
door wide open for a shamelessly brash billionaire who wields wealth like a weapon.
Whether it’s absurd stunts like meme coins or pushing policies that roll back decades of hard-fought progressive gains, in his hands, money becomes the tool of authoritarianism, serving the interests of the elites while dismantling the social safety nets that have given millions any hope of a fair shot at life.
Trump isn’t the first villain at the helm, but his presidency marks the undeniable acceleration of an all out bid for total control by the elites pulling the strings, manipulating your beliefs, your actions and if allowed to continue, your future. The political systems are theirs to command, and they’ve already built a world where your voice barely matters.
The power to change begins with recognizing the illusion for what it is. The real solution lies in imagining and building a world that works for the many, not the few.
We don’t need to wait for a savior or a revolution from above. We are the revolution. We have the tools, the tech, and the collective willpower to disrupt the systems of greed and exploitation. We can empower ourselves by supporting alternative economies—local and decentralized systems that prioritize human well-being over profits.
We can dismantle corporate monopolies, amplify grassroots movements, and claim the digital spaces we’ve been pushed out of.
The time for talk is over. This is our moment to rise, to rise above the systems that keep us in servitude. Don’t wait for permission. Don’t let them dictate the terms of your freedom. The path forward is in our hands. Seize it.
TRUMP’S PLAN TO ERASE DEI:
WHY IT’S BAD FOR BUSINESS, WORSE FOR AMERICA—AND WHY OREGON SHOULD FIGHT BACK
BY FAWN ABERSON PHOTO CREDIT: FLOSSIN STAFF
Trump's endorsement of the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025—a conservative plan to overhaul the federal government— signals a profound and dangerous shift. Central to this agenda is dismantling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, with far-reaching consequences. Whether this move aims to end DEI or rally a reactionary base, the impact is serious.
Project 2025 frames DEI as discriminatory, labeling it statesanctioned racism. Critics claim it undermines meritocracy, yet studies from McKinsey & Company and Harvard Business Review show that organizations with diverse leadership and inclusive policies financially outperform peers and drive innovation. Eliminating DEI could hinder economic growth, reduce workplace productivity, and limit opportunities for marginalized groups.
The plan seeks to strip diversity requirements from federal contracts, ban critical race theory training, and halt workforce diversity data collection. Trump's executive order, "Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing," mandates shutting down all DEI policies in federal agencies. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), threatens to pull federal funding from states that don't comply. The strategy? Starve DEI into irrelevance.
DEI expert Dr. James Mason, President at Organizational Cultural Competence Assessment and Training, calls these moves political theater. “This administration isn’t threatened by DEI; they’re using it to instill fear,” he explains. “If you look at who benefits most from DEI, it’s women—particularly white women—who have been the biggest
beneficiaries. But the big boogeyman in the story is always Black people.”
Trump reinforced his stance: “DEI is nothing but a radical scam. We are putting an end to the woke policies that have weakened America.” Musk piled on: “Merit should be the only factor in hiring decisions. DEI is just another form of discrimination in disguise.”
Defenders argue that the so-called “meritocracy” ignores systemic barriers—bias in hiring, unequal access to education, and entrenched networks that favor the privileged. Studies reveal identical resumes with names perceived as Black or Latino receive fewer callbacks than those with traditionally white names.
Post-2020, corporations pledged billions to DEI, only to later retract those commitments—not because DEI failed, but because structural change was never the priority. These missteps gave conservatives an easy target, allowing them to frame diversity hiring as “reverse discrimination” while ignoring the reality: diverse teams outperform homogeneous ones, and equitable hiring ensures talent—not privilege— dictates success.
The myth of the “diversity hire” dismisses underrepresented professionals, reducing their
achievements to quotas. Yet legacy admissions, corporate nepotism, and exclusive networks have long given unqualified candidates from privileged backgrounds an unfair advantage.
Trump’s rollback of DEI isn’t about fairness—it’s about maintaining power structures. Instead of banning DEI outright, conservatives are slowchoking it—cutting funding, stalling initiatives, and drowning agencies in red tape. “They’re not going to kill DEI outright,” an Oregon policy advisor said. “They’ll make it so hard to implement that people give up.”
Oregon’s Reality Check
While Washington moves to erase DEI, Oregon faces its own reckoning. A recent state-commissioned study reveals that while DEI is widely acknowledged, actual investments have failed to match the rhetoric. Systemic disparities persist—especially in state contracting. The numbers don’t lie:
Black-owned businesses received just 0.1% of $3.2 billion in state contracts, despite making up 0.5% of available firms.
Asian American-owned businesses (8.3% market availability) secured only 0.4% of contract dollars.
Hispanic-owned businesses (5.1% availability) saw just 2.0% of the funds.
White woman-owned businesses (18.6% market availability) landed only 6.6% of state spending.
DEI isn’t about political correctness— it’s about economic fairness. Dr. Mason sums it up: “We focused too
much on the ‘what’ of DEI and not the ‘why.’ DEI isn’t just about hiring— it’s about innovation, retention, and economic competitiveness.”
He also emphasizes that companies maintaining DEI aren’t just making a statement—they’re securing their future. He warns that those who abandon it risk falling behind in talent acquisition, consumer engagement, and global competitiveness. Even corporations that have scaled back DEI efforts, like Target, will eventually have to adapt, because the workforce and customer base are shifting. Businesses that fail to reflect that reality will struggle to stay relevant.
For Oregon, DEI isn’t just a social initiative—it’s an economic strategy that could define the state’s competitiveness. To stay ahead, Oregon must move beyond performative gestures and embed diversity, equity, and inclusion into its core economic framework. This means building stronger talent pipelines to connect businesses with a diverse workforce, expanding small business access to government contracts to level the playing field, and closing wage gaps to increase homeownership and financial stability.
Cities like Portland, Beaverton, and Eugene have the opportunity to lead by integrating DEI into hiring, procurement, and business development policies. Public-private partnerships and local funding can sustain these efforts even as federal support diminishes, ensuring longterm impact.
Legislation like Oregon’s Senate Bill 569 (SB 569) marks a step in the
right direction. By tracking contract applications by race and gender and funding digital literacy programs to help minority-owned businesses navigate procurement, the state can begin dismantling systemic barriers that have long hindered equitable access to economic opportunities.
If Oregon fully commits to the best principles of DEI as an economic driver, the benefits will extend beyond equity—it will spark innovation, fuel business growth, and create a stronger, more competitive economy for all.
The Future of DEI: Performance or Policy?
Trump’s war on DEI isn’t about policy—it’s about performance. He’s feeding his base the illusion of dismantling “wokeness” while ignoring the economic consequences of shutting out diverse talent and businesses.
Will DEI decline? Dr. Mason doesn’t think so. “The question isn’t whether DEI continues. The question is whether we let the political circus define what it is, or whether we take control of its future.” DEI is evidencebased—not a trend. Companies with diverse teams consistently outperform those without because broader perspectives lead to better problemsolving and innovation.
As some states move to dismantle DEI, Oregon should fight back—not just for the sake of equity, but because it’s good for business and essential for America’s future.
FROM GRIEF TO RESISTANCE: A MOTHER’S CALL TO ACTION
BY MICHELE DARR PHOTO CREDIT: MICHELE DARR
Iwrite this as a mother, as a woman, as someone who has held the hands of children whose futures were stolen before they had a chance to dream. I write this from the depths of grief that is not mine alone but belongs to every Palestinian mother burying her child, every father who comes home to rubble where his family once lived, every son and daughter who no longer knows the warmth of a parent’s embrace.
It is a nearly unfathomable time to be alive…to arrive at a moment in history where the genocide of an entire people is broadcast in real time, where mothers cradle the dying and dead bodies of their children gunned down in the streets, pulled from the rubble of their homes—where hospitals and NICU’s are turned into graveyards— and the world watches in silence.
I have no illusions left. I lost them nearly 4 decades ago as a 20-year-old mother living in Kuwait in 1990, with my infant daughter in my arms, witnessing firsthand the cruel, deceptive gamers of U.S. imperialism play their cards under the auspices of a thinly veiled, orchestrated “invasion” used to justify endless war in the region. I lost them when the U.S. State Department threatened me with arrest and charges of treason simply for accepting an invitation to speak out against the devastating threat of U.S. involvement in the impending
Gulf War. I lost any remnants of illusion over the following decades as I watched the U.S. invade country after country across the Middle East, on the pretense of staged terror attacks and panic inducing rhetoric about shadowy groups of mostly unarmed rebels being the REAL bad guys, not the ones in suits and brass, pre-selling the land and resources slated for plundering.
Most heartbreaking and souleviscerating were the illusions I lost about the benevolence of my country of origin, the mighty US of A. Married into a Palestinian family, I sat at their tables and listened to countless stories of what they had endured—of
homes and land stolen by US-backed “settlers” claiming divine entitlement, of children who learned to run before they could walk, of children dodging US made and paid for bullets and airstrikes on the way to school, of children growing up in the shadow of real-life monsters too horrifying to imagine.
My father-in-law, Mohammed AlNimer, was a man whose only "crime" was being born Palestinian. They sought to steal his home, his land and his birthright—and for that, they dragged him from his family in the dead of night with no explanation. His family believed him dead for nearly a decade, until one day, he suddenly reappeared. When he returned, he wasn’t the man they had known, for he came back bearing a burden too heavy for any of us to lift…..the tormented scars of a prisoner of war, forever marked by inhumanity that none of us could ever truly comprehend.
I became a mother in that home. I became a mother while bearing witness. And now, I grieve not just as a woman, but as a mother who sees her own children reflected in the bombed-out streets of Gaza, in the hollow eyes of the starving and displaced in Palestine and in the innumerable places around the world where imperialist real estate agents and resource extraction corporations set down their bloody boots.
Despite the growing chorus of anti-occupation and land-back voices from both here and Israel, the iron fist of repression is taking increasingly extreme measures to silence them. Rabbis in Israel who oppose the occupation, genocide and the hijacking of their sacred faith by the blood-soaked ideology of Zionism, along with human rights groups and a rising tide of ordinary Israelis, are facing brutal retaliation for speaking out against the occupation and it’s atrocities committed against Palestinians.
Here in the U.S., under the false auspices of “controlling anti-semitism”, all but 11 states have either enacted or are in the process of implementing the so-called "Israeli Loyalty Oath," a law designed to criminalize boycotting, protesting and speaking out against and resisting Israeli war crimes. They want to make it illegal to call out genocide. Illegal to resist murder.
Can you imagine? Can you truly fathom a world where demanding justice for slaughtered children is a crime? Where boycotting an apartheid regime is branded as treason? This is the world they are building, piece by piece, while we stand by and hesitate. So what do we do? We, who claim to value life and liberty? We, who weep for our own children, who cry out against injustice when it is convenient or affects us directly? Our tax dollars have funded the horrors of apartheid Israeli occupation of Palestine for 77 years. Fifteen billion dollars this year alone—money that could heal the sick, shelter the homeless, repair our crumbling healthcare system, rebuild decaying infrastructure, and
purify poisoned water supplies—is instead funding missiles, bombs, and surveillance. It is being used not to sustain life, but to erase it—to ensure that generations of Palestinians will never again know peace.
Their pain has become my own, and their grief has settled into my bones. And still, we are not powerless. We, the Women—the Mothers, the Daughters, the Granddaughters—are the seeds of resistance that dictators and despots have NEVER been able to burn. We wield a power that no weapon forged by tyrants could ever prosper against. It is a force born deep within us as Women, a force that has always compelled us to protect the innocent, shield the young, and, if need be, take to the battlefield to defend both.
We, the Women— the Mothers, Daughters, and Granddaughters— are the seeds of resistance that no dictator, despot or tyrant have ever been able to burn.
We have always been at the forefront of resistance, even when it cost us everything. We are the women of the White Rose in Nazi Germany, who saw the creeping shadow of genocide and dared to defy it, knowing it would cost us our lives but refusing to let the truth be silenced. Though some of us, like Nazi war-resistor Sophie
Scholl, never lived to see the end of Hitler’s reign, our unwavering courage and sacrifice are immortalized in history. We are the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo in Argentina, who, with relentless courage and resistance to the campaigns of terror designed to silence us, took to the streets to demand the return of our stolen children—a fight, fueled by love and grief that echoes through history as a symbol of defiance against tyranny.
And now, it is our turn. We stand at another turning point in history—one where the innocent continue to be slaughtered, where parents are burying their children, where the cries of the oppressed echo across the world. While It’s not convenient to stand against the tide of injustice and statesanctioned violence, I ask you—as a mother, as a woman, as a human being—what will you do? What will you tell your children when they ask what side you stood on? Will you say you looked away? That you were afraid? That you thought someone else would fight?
Will you let your spirit shrink into silence, hoping the storm will pass over you? Or will you stand, unbowed, and burn like a torch for justice—so that the next generation does not inherit a world where genocide is met with silence and resistance is branded as treason?
This is our moment. Stop paying taxes. Boycott. Divest. March. Protest. Speak out. Make them uncomfortable. Tear down the propaganda. Share the Truth every way you can. Hold the line. Because history will not ask what we believed—it will ask what we did.
about relentlessly pursuing desire. The real question isn’t What’s holding you back? It’s: What are you willing to do to move forward?
If you’re ready to stop wishing and start building, these 24 strategies will help you harness the power of attraction, time, and action to create meaningful, lasting wealth.
MINDSET SHIFT
1. Get Crystal Clear on Your Wealth Vision
You can’t build what you don’t define. Instead of saying, “I just want to be rich,” set specific financial goals. How much money do you want to make? By when? What will you give in return? Why? Write your vision down and read it daily—it programs your brain to find ways to make it happen.
2. Think Like an Owner, Not an Employee
Daymond John worked at Red Lobster before founding FUBU, but he didn’t just collect a paycheck—he used his earnings to build his business. Employees trade time for money; owners create assets that generate income. The key to wealth is shifting from making money to owning things that make money for you.
3. Speak Wealth Into Your Life
Your words shape your reality. Don’t say, “I’m broke.” Say, “I am creating financial freedom.” Replace “I can’t afford it” with “How can I afford it?” The wealthy focus on solutions, not limitations.
4. Surround Yourself with Wealth Builders
Your environment dictates your success. If your circle isn’t discussing business or financial growth, expand your network. Attend events, find mentors, and build relationships with people who challenge and inspire you.
5. Train Yourself for Resilience & Adaptability
Every successful entrepreneur, from Oprah to Tyler Perry, faced failure before success. The key difference? They didn’t quit. Setbacks aren’t the end—they’re lessons. Adjust, pivot, and keep going. Wealth is built by those who turn obstacles into stepping stones.
6. Develop Unshakable Self-Belief
Wealth starts with confidence. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. Many self-made millionaires faced rejection, but they kept going because they trusted their vision. Stop seeking approval—act with certainty, take risks, and back yourself.
MONEY MOVES
7. Own, Don’t Just Earn
Jay-Z didn’t chase random investments—he built wealth by owning what he knew. From music to Roc Nation, D’Ussé, and real estate, he focused on industries he understood. Wealthy people don’t just make money—they own assets that generate long-term income.
8. Monetize Your Skills
Madam C.J. Walker built her empire by solving a problem in Black hair care. She didn’t wait for opportunity—she created it. What
skills or talents do you have that people will pay for?
9. Invest in What You Know
Warren Buffett says, “Never invest in something you don’t understand.” Stick to industries you know—real estate, stocks, tech, or e-commerce. Avoid chasing trends. Do your research, build expertise, and invest with confidence.
10. Make Your Money Work 24/7
True wealth comes from money earning money. Start small by investing in stocks, micro-investing apps, or automated savings. Build passive income through affiliate marketing, self-publishing, or digital products. Talk to a financial coach to learn how to make your money work for you.
11. Use Smart Debt & Leverage
Not all debt is bad—it’s how you use it that matters. Wealthy people borrow money to buy things that make them money, like property or a business. Bad debt is borrowing for things that lose value. Before taking on debt, ask: Will this make me money or cost me money?
12. Treat Your Credit Like an Asset
If your credit isn’t where you want it to be, don’t stress—fixing it is possible. Start by paying bills on time, reducing debt, and using your credit card but paying it off monthly. Even small improvements can open doors. Treat credit as a tool that works for you— not against you.
ACTION PLAN
is having more than one way to make money.
16. Find & Cultivate Mentors
Success leaves clues—learn from those who’ve already achieved what you want. A great mentor guides, challenges, and helps you avoid costly mistakes. Find them at events, business associations, or LinkedIn groups. The right connections can change your path.
17. Master Sales & Negotiation
Everything in life is sales—whether you're pitching a business, negotiating a raise, or closing a deal. Wealthy people know how to sell ideas, products, and themselves. Study sales,
and attend seminars. When the market shifts, those who keep learning find new opportunities, while others get left behind.
21. Get Comfortable With Discomfort
Cathy Hughes started with nothing, even sleeping in her radio station before turning Radio One (now Urban One) into a media empire. She faced rejection, risked everything, and kept going despite uncertainty. Wealth requires stepping outside your comfort zone—take smart risks, embrace challenges, and bet on yourself.
22. Invest in Your Health
move closer to your vision of wealth. Be intentional with every moment, investing in growth, learning, and actions that align with your purpose. When you use your time with mindfulness and clarity, you open the door to abundance. How you honor your time is a reflection of the wealth you will receive.

YOU CAN’T BE WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE: THE SNOW WHITE PHENOMENON
BY PASTOR RENEE’ WARD PHOTO CREDIT: FLOSSIN STAFF
The premise for the inaugural Women’s Conference called “Success Looks Like You” took place in Portland Oregon, August 15-17, 2024. Hosted by ‘Visionpreneur’ Pastor Renee’ Ward, the mission of this national conference is ‘to help women exceed their personal, professional and spiritual development as entrepreneurs’.
Whether it be the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s or beyond, women have been influential in the marketplace as well as home to support the American
economy despite the ebb and flow of recession, inflation, and other social impacts.
However, over the past twenty years there has been a noticeable increase among women to replace the revolving door and glass ceilings with an opportunity to provide a doorway leading women into the upper strata of major companies as a BusinessOwner, CEO, President instead of occupying a subordinate position with no potential career advancement.
A recent blog entitled “40 women in business statistics (and facts) for 2024 and 2024” (Joanie Wang, November 10, 2023) highlighted the following:
1. Just under 47% of workers in the United States are women.
2. 8.8% of the companies on Fortune 500’s 2022 list have women CEOs.
3. Women represent 8.6% of all venture capitalists.
4. 42% of newly created womenowned businesses have been started by Black women.
5. 31% of newly created womenowned businesses have been started by Latino women.
6. 70% of women with children under 18 are employed.
7. Mothers are the primary breadwinner in 40% of American households.
8. Women own an estimated 90% of childcare businesses and more than half are owned by women of color.
9. In the age of automation and technology , it’s estimated 7% to 24% of women currently employed worldwide may need to transition across occupations.
10. If female labor market participation in the U.S. grew to the levels seen in other developed economies, the economy could receive a $1 trillion boost over the next 10 years.
If someone needs a ‘why’, these aforementioned stats lay the groundwork upon the pathway of discovery to why ‘financial independence’ and entrepreneurship are the intended goal for women to believe they are successful. Everytime a woman looks in the ‘mirror’ she either sees herself as a failure or a winner. Executive producer Pastor Renee Ward refers to it as the ‘Snow White Phenomenon’, in which one measures their success by someone else’s accomplishments rather than seeing their own.
“Success Looks Like You” presented a beautiful tapestry of women from throughout the United States, enlightening, elevating, motivating and reflecting Success 24/7 with the help of phenomenal women.
With a lineup of inspiring women and ground-breaking sessions,
“Success Looks Like You” shatters glass ceilings and illuminates pathways to unprecedented achievements.

Those attending the 3-day conference gleaned from local entrepreneurs like Nicole Rose (Johnson) founder of Ella Dean Natural Hair Care products; real estate broker Linda Crumb; Trenelle Doyle transportation expert
with Go Girl Ride; Summer Fowler president of ECOREAL Solutions; and more.

share of the business’ profits when the business starts making money and, unlike loans, the amount of money that goes into your investors’ pockets grows as the profits of the business grow.
Leveraging other people's money through equity investments can significantly enhance your business's ability to grow and succeed.
Investor Expectations: Investors, especially passive investors, typically expect high returns and may push for aggressive growth strategies. They also require constant updates and information. Not communicating with investors and having investors whose expectations don’t match your own could increase your risk of daily disruptions and shareholder lawsuits.
Decision-Making: You may need to consult with investors on major business decisions, which can lead to potential conflicts.
Other Considerations:
There is a big difference between passive and active investors.
Passive investors give you much more control over business decisions but sales of equity to passive investors are highly regulated at both the state and federal level, which makes the costs of compliance for securities offerings very high.
Active investors on the other hand are active in the business. They will be making decisions alongside you so they need to be someone that you can work with, and you will want to have good governance documents and defined roles to plan for times where you disagree.
While your financial, accounting, tax and legal advisors will be helpful generally, they are mandatory when considering equity investments. Having other owners without properly drafted governance documents, good financial tracking and reporting or considered tax planning can have disastrous consequences and can even land business owners in jail if the wrong laws are violated.
Conclusion
Leveraging other people's money through equity investments can significantly enhance your business's ability to grow and succeed. While investors and partners don’t come without strings attached, careful planning and good advice can help your business purchase success with other people’s money.

BREAKING BARRIERS:
UNLOCKING THE FUNDING TO BUILD YOUR DREAM BUSINESS
BY ALEX GEBREAB PHOTO CREDIT: FLOSSIN STAFF
So, you're ready to make your dream business happen. You’ve got the vision, the hustle, and a plan that’s about to change the game. But when you try to take things to the next level, it feels like you’re running into a brick wall. The funding doors are locked, and the key is buried under all the boxes you’re supposed to check. High credit score? Check. Collateral? Probably not. A proven track record? Not yet.
If you’re a Black or minority entrepreneur, this isn’t just
frustrating—it’s a system that’s set up against you. And trust me, I know. As someone who’s been in banking, I’ve had to tell people their credit wasn’t high enough or their business plans weren’t “polished” enough to secure a loan. But here’s the thing: I’ve been on the other side. I know how it feels to hear “no.” And now, I’m using that experience to help entrepreneurs like you break down those walls and get the support you deserve.
Let me be clear—failure isn’t about all the “no’s” you get along the way. It’s
about how you bounce back and find the right path forward.
Real Talk: The Struggle for Black Business Owners
Let’s get down to the facts. Black entrepreneurs are rejected for loans twice as often as their white peers. And it’s not just personal—it’s systemic. Here in places like Oregon, Black-owned businesses are getting far fewer loans and contracts than their white counterparts. It’s not about bad luck or lack of talent. It’s about wealth

BUILDING AN EMPIRE WITH VISION, INTEGRITY, AND A DASH OF CHAOS
BY FAWN ABERSON PHOTO CREDIT: MIKE RICHARDSON / PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY
Sitting down with Mike Richardson at Dark Horse Comics, you step into a world built on imagination, persistence, and innovative thinking. His office is packed with treasures of a life devoted to storytelling—memorabilia from comics, film, and animation. A Frankenstein bust—the actual cast of Boris Karloff in makeup—commands attention. Across the room, a miniature Godzilla stands poised for battle, a symbol of the challenges and victories of building an empire. He lifts a figurine of Michigan J. Frog, a gift from a fan who once heard him say, "I have been lucky in life—the frog always sings for me."
Then there are the stories. A towering stack of large, bound editions of Prince Valiant comic strips sits proudly, a testament to Richardson’s admiration for Hal Foster. “Prince Valiant is the best written and
illustrated strip of all time,” he says. “Hal Foster wasn’t just an artist; he was a novelist in comic form.”
Born to Hustle: The Making of an Entrepreneur
Long before Dark Horse Comics, Richardson was a kid with big dreams and an uncanny ability to make money. His Milwaukie, Oregon neighbor called him the “JP Getty of 35th Street.” Even as a child, he understood supply and demand.
“We’d pick flowers, tie ribbons around them, put in a safety pin, and sell them as corsages,” he recalls. “The nice older ladies would give us a quarter. On Sundays, we’d collect beer bottles from the make-out spots and turn them in for refunds. I had an Oregonian route in the morning and a Journal route in the evening. I even made my own baseball cards and sold them to the neighborhood kids.”
Hustling came naturally, but it wasn’t just about making money. “I didn’t want to stop with one store—I wanted twelve. I didn’t want to be an employee—I wanted to build something of my own.”
Jumping Without a Net
In his early twenties, Richardson worked as a commercial artist for a wood products company, while also running a commercial art business he had started in college. But he knew it wasn’t his future. One day, his wife, Karie, sent him flowers with a teddy bear attached that said he was going to be a dad. He quit his job on the spot.
That night, he asked his wife to quit her job too. “I want to move to Bend, Oregon, with our new baby and open a comic book shop,” he said. Most people, upon hearing that, would probably panic, but Karie simply said, “Okay, let's go.” That kind of support was priceless. With no background in business and no safety net, Richardson took the ultimate risk—betting on himself.
Building Dark Horse: The Long Game Over Short-Term Gains
Pegasus Fantasy Books opened on January 1st, 1980, funded by a $2,500 credit card and fueled by an unshakable belief in long-term vision. Unlike businesses chasing immediate profits, he focused on sustainability.
“For the first seven or eight years, I didn’t take a single paycheck home. Every penny went back into the business. My wife supported us while working as a waitress.” Meeting numerous comic book writers and artists at signings in his store, he learned that the people who created all the characters featured in those books lost the rights to their creations when they signed their contracts. He came up with an idea. In 1986, he launched Dark Horse Comics.
That idea paid off. Dark Horse grew into one of the most successful independent publishers in the world. In 2022, it was acquired by Embracer Group, a deal estimated to be worth several hundred million dollars. From the start, Richardson prioritized creator rights. “Too many creators had their ideas stolen. We built this company to make sure that wouldn’t happen.”
The industry had a history of exploiting creators. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were paid a few hundred dollars for Superman then found themselves banned from the offices of a corporation that profited billions from their work. Jack Kirby, cocreator of Marvel’s biggest icons, faced similar struggles.
“It was offensive to me that corporations could take ideas and claim ownership,” Richardson says. “I built Dark Horse on a simple premise: creators own their work, and we partner to make it successful—I handle the business, they handle the creative.”
Dark Horse’s first major success was Concrete by Paul Chadwick. “It
won quite a few awards, and Paul was so loyal to us despite numerous opportunities to go elsewhere.” A large figure of Concrete still stands in Richardson’s office, a silent reminder of Dark Horse’s commitment to creator-owned work.
The Power of EQ
Ask Richardson what separates success from failure, and he won’t mention IQ—he’ll talk about EQ (Emotional Intelligence). “There’s a reason many high-IQ people fail in business as well as life,” he says. “They have a difficult time with cause and effect. Years ago, I read a book stating that EQ is the true measure of intelligence—the ability to read the room, know when to act, and understand long-term impact.” He gives a simple example: “There’s a dollar on the table and you know there will be two dollars there tomorrow. Do you have the discipline to wait, or do you take the dollar now?”
Hollywood, Ethics, and the Power of ‘No’
Richardson never compromised his principles—even when Hollywood came knocking. “In the film business, the word ‘no’ gives you power,” he says. At one point, a major producer who had wronged a mentor of his offered Richardson a lucrative deal. His response? “I told him I couldn’t do the deal and why. That decision only made my relationship with my mentor stronger.” That integrity paid off. Dark Horse Entertainment has produced major Hollywood hits, including:
• The Mask ($351 million worldwide)
• Timecop ($100 million worldwide)
• Hellboy (a franchise with multiple sequels and spinoffs)
Despite his success, Richardson remains grounded. “Money has never been the center of my life. If you do the right things, the money comes. And if you lose it? You work to make it back.”
Family, Legacy, and Living Without Regrets
Aside from corporate offices in Oregon and entertainment offices in LA, Richardson once had offices in London, Paris, and Tokyo. Despite all of that travel, his schedule centered on his family.
His wife,Karie, who supported them in the early years, now enjoys gardening, pickleball, and hunting for Amazon deals. “We were just as happy living off her tips as we are now,” he says. “We just have more stuff.” At 74, he still goes out and plays basketball when he has time. “I’ve been the oldest guy on the team, but some of my teammates are breaking down before me,” he laughs. “I’m still ready to go.”
His advice for young entrepreneurs? “Love what you do. I heard once that if you find a profession you love, you will never work a day in your life. That’s true for me. And pay your bills.”
On wealth? “Don’t chase money— build something meaningful, and the money follows.”
With Dark Horse thriving and his legacy cemented in ethics, vision, and imagination, Richardson proves real success is about playing the long game. And as long as he’s in it, one thing’s for sure—the frog always sings for him.
home, setting up a hobby farm, or creating an off-grid retreat. It can be a valuable asset to pass down through generations, providing long-term family generational wealth.
Investing in land can be a lucrative opportunity if approached strategically. By carefully researching, planning, and managing your investment, buying land can be very profitable. Here are some steps to consider:
1. Location: Identify areas with growth potential. Consider factors like future urban development, accessibility, and proximity to amenities. If you can, visit the land during different seasons and walk the land. Do your Due Diligence to make sure that there are no easements, liens, if it's in a flood zone, if you will have mineral and water rights to name a few. When in doubt, check it out.
2. Market Trends: Study the real estate market trends and economic indicators to identify the best time to buy. Explore financing options, such as loans, partnerships or Owner Financing. I have found that the best route for me, personally, was to search for land “For Sale By Owner” (FSBO). This will eliminate the middleman, the Bank, and allow you to negotiate with the seller on your terms.
3. Budget: Determine your budget, including the cost of land, taxes, and any additional expenses.
4. Legal Aspects: Ensure the land has clear titles and is free from legal disputes.
5. Zoning and Regulations: Check local zoning laws and regulations to understand permissible uses for the land.
6. Land Improvements: Consider making improvements like clearing, grading, and installing utilities to increase land value.
Owning land
isn't just an investment; it's a strategic move toward building wealth, security, and a lasting legacy.
7. Subdividing: In some cases, subdividing the land into smaller parcels can yield higher value and financial returns. For example, If you purchase a 20 acre lot for $20,000 and subdivide it down to 4 - 5 acre lots. Then place those lots up for sale comparable to other 5 acre lots in the area. In my area 5 acres are going for $79,000. Those 4 lots will bring in $316,000.00 minus your initial investments of the 20 acre lot and the subdivision fees. Now, your initial investment of $20,000 is paid in full and the rest is profit. You do the math. It's a win, win situation.
8. Buy and Hold: Purchase land in areas expected to appreciate over time, and hold it until the value increases in that area. Buy it now, pay it off and sell it.
Marketing: When you're ready to sell, market the property effectively to attract potential buyers.
Timing: Sell the land when the market conditions are favorable to maximize your profit.
9. Lease Agreements: Lease the land for agricultural, commercial, or recreational purposes to generate income.
10. Property Taxes: Be aware of ongoing property taxes and any potential tax benefits from owning land.
Capital Gains: Understand the tax implications of selling land, including capital gains taxes.
11. Real Estate Agents: Work with experienced agents who specialize in land transactions.
12. Legal Advisors: Consult with legal professionals to ensure compliance with all legal requirements.
If you are interested in purchasing land, I encourage you to research the area where you want to buy land. By carefully researching, planning, and managing your investment, buying land can be a very profitable venture.
store owners, Authors and Speakers, and Health / Wellness / Spirituality Coaches which some of these categories Black entrepreneurs lead in the creation of in 2024. With many of these businesses providing products or services that support the personal or professional development of Black patrons, in my opinion, lifestyle businesses are a cheat code to the social and economic success of the Black community.
Yet, even with ideal circumstances for collaboration, there still seems to be a weariness to collaborate and / or lack of understanding of the importance of collaboration among Black entrepreneurs and creatives. Why?
To add a bit of historical context, it is well documented that “divide and conquer” strategies have been used to dismantle Black communities and impede their advancement in life and business. Historical events, such as the implementation of Jim Crow laws and systemic redlining, effectively worked to limit economic mobility and opportunity for Black Americans. These tactics were designed to keep Black communities from thriving independently and to prevent collective economic empowerment but the spirit of collaboration has continued to help the Black community overcome obstacles and have historical successes. By working together, we have not only fought against systemic barriers but have also built vibrant, thriving enterprises that demonstrate the power of unity and shared purpose.
Here’s how we carry the torch of resilience and multiply our
successes as the now generation of entrepreneurs and leaders:
1. Build Strong Relationships:
Establishing trust, open communication and mutual respect is foundational to successful collaboration. Invest time in building genuine relationships with partners, mentors, and community members.
2. Leverage Diverse Perspectives:
Embrace the diversity of thought and experience that collaborators bring to the table. Different perspectives can spark innovative ideas and solutions that may not arise in isolation.
3. Define Clear Goals and Roles: Successful collaboration requires clarity in objectives and responsibilities. Clearly define the goals of the collaboration and ensure that each participant understands their role and contributions. This alignment helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps the collaborative effort focused and productive.
4. Create a Supportive Environment: Develop a collaborative culture by creating an environment where individuals feel valued and supported. Recognize and celebrate successes, and provide constructive feedback to facilitate growth and improvement.
5. Utilize Technology and Tools: Leverage technology to enhance collaboration. Tools such as project management software, communication platforms, and shared digital workspaces can streamline coordination and keep everyone engaged and informed.
6. (Most importantly) Give Back to the Community: Collaboration extends beyond business and can have a profound impact on the community. Engage in initiatives that support local causes and contribute to community development. By giving back, you strengthen the fabric of the community and create a cycle of support and growth.
Here are a few places to start:
Soul Business District Association: A nonprofit organization that supports economic growth and advocates for over 500 businesses in North N/NE Portland. www.souldistrictbiz.org/
Collective Dream Project: A community organization founded by and for BIPOC Entrepreneurs for the purpose of collective abundance and holistic wellness. www.collectivedreamproject.org
Black business conferences such as CultureCon, WeBuyBlack Convention and Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Summit.
Collaboration has always been crucial for Black entrepreneurs, from the Great Migration to today’s networks. Looking ahead, Black entrepreneurs aim for unity, innovation, and shared success. If we work together, we advance our goals and uplift our community. In the spirit of collaboration, let us continue to dream together, build together, and succeed together. Our collective potential is boundless, and our shared journey will lead us to new heights of achievement and fulfillment.
THE THREE C'S:
HEALTH IS CRITICAL TO ONE'S WEALTH
BY JOE MCFERRIN II DESIGN: JAMAAL HALE
Portland Opportunities
Industrialization Center, (POIC) is well-known in the community for providing workforce development, education, and violence prevention programs predominately for Black people. In recent years we have added the “Three C’s” initiatives (Health Care, Health Curriculum, Health Career), a significant focus on health and wellness across all services.
Although, there are few studies that focus on the correlation between health and wealth for Black people, it is common knowledge that the health outcomes are troubling. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau report that the median household income
for African American families is $37,000 compared to that of nonHispanic whites, which is $63,000. Additionally, Black family’s median household net worth for is 14 times lower than that of non-Hispanic whites, and only six percent of black households have investment holdings, such as stocks or mutual funds. POIC believes one strategy to help poor Black Families and others who are poor to create wealth is to understand how important their health is to building wealth.
Since 1967, the thousands of students, adults, and families POIC serves face incredibly complex life circumstances, ranging from
unemployment, underemployment, community violence to housing and food insecurity and more. Supporting their health and wellness journey is critical to their ability to succeed in their educational and career endeavors. This has led to an organization-wide effort known as the “Three C’s” initiatives.
POIC begins this movement with the CURRICULUM . Education is the first step to changing behaviors, hearts, and minds. Students attending Rosemary Anderson (RA) Prep will be required to complete an additional half of credit of “Practical Health Education” to earn a high school diploma. This course will
BUILDING FINANCIAL SUCCESS: AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
BY JIM BROOKS PHOTO CREDIT: UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
University of Oregon students and alumni share an entrepreneurial spirit with the world. While we are proud to be the stomping ground for notable alumni Phil Knight, Tim Boyle, Ann Curry, Kaitlin Olson, and Josh Wardle, our team in the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management continually seeks ways to encourage all Oregon students on their journeys to career and financial success.
It starts with a simple principle—we understand the first step to financial prosperity is financial stability. This is why at the UO we help build opportunities for students to achieve financial success. I have observed when students make wise choices and take an active role in their futures, they can achieve financial success and build wealth. Attending the UO is one of the ways we believe students can invest in their futures to achieve greater wealth and success.
To start, our university guarantees that when students begin their studies at the UO, they will maintain the same tuition rate for up to five years—no increases and no surprises. We call this the Oregon Guarantee. When students know the cost of their education from the beginning, they will be able to plan and build a budget with their families.
When students arrive at the UO, they work on paving their road to financial success by connecting with our Financial Wellness Center. Meeting a financial wellness coach can help them identify their goals and next steps for obtaining scholarships, following a budget, managing credit, and getting ready to save and invest. When students access resources from the center throughout their journey at the UO, they set the foundations of financial literacy so when they graduate, they are prepared for their financial future.
At the UO, we also make college affordable for Oregonians through many scholarship programs, including the PathwayOregon scholarship. Students who meet the requirements are awarded the scholarship and have an opportunity to receive a tuition-free education for up to four years. The opportunity to give back to the state of Oregon and set these Pell-eligible students up for financial success upon graduation is something we are proud to provide.
All students at the UO have opportunities to meet with academic and career advisors. When they meet with their advisors regularly, they plan their courses, discuss internships and opportunities that may arise, and prepare themselves for a successful launch into the workforce upon graduation.
During my time at the University of Oregon, I have made a commitment to support the financial prosperity of all Ducks. I believe students who attend the UO are making a solid choice in their future, and I am proud of the ways our programs strategically guide them toward financial success.

HIGHER CONSCIOUSNESS:
WEALTH & GENEROSITY - A GOD-CENTERED APPROACH TO FINANCIAL PROSPERITY
BY DR STEVEN HOLT
As I reflect on my own journey, I've come to realize that true prosperity isn’t about accumulating wealth for wealth’s sake—it's about aligning your life, your resources, and your heart with a purpose greater than yourself. Over time, I've learned that real financial success isn’t just about getting rich; it’s about living a rich life, one that serves others, honors God, and ultimately brings fulfillment. It’s about purpose, balance, and responsibility.
One of the first lessons I’ve learned is that God is the source of all wealth. Everything I have—the wisdom, the strength to work, the opportunities that come my way—has come from God. It’s easy to get caught up in thinking that our achievements are solely our own doing, but that mindset can lead to pride. The truth is, we are stewards of what God has
already provided. Wealth is not a trophy to collect; it’s a tool to serve a greater purpose. When we understand that, we can avoid the trap of relying on our own abilities and instead recognize that everything we have is ultimately a gift.
Now, when it comes to acquiring wealth, the first thing I’ll tell you is that diligence and hard work matter. Success doesn’t come without effort. It’s not enough to have a dream—you have to be willing to put in the work. Whether you’re working for someone else or building your own business, you have to show up, day in and day out, with a mindset of excellence. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen opportunities pass by simply because someone wasn’t willing to roll up their sleeves and do the work. Wealth doesn’t just fall into your lap— it’s built through consistent effort, persistence, and trusting that God will bless those efforts.
Equally important is the principle of integrity. I’ve had the privilege of working with a variety of leaders over the years, and I can say with certainty that what separates those who succeed in the long run from those who don’t is integrity. Do the right thing, even when it’s difficult. Honesty and transparency are your foundation, whether you’re dealing with money, people, or business. Doing things the right way might not always be the easiest path, but it’s the only one that leads to lasting success.
Then there’s wise stewardship. I’ve learned that wealth isn’t just about earning more—it’s about managing what you have well. Budgeting, saving,
avoiding debt, and making sound investments are key elements of being a good steward. When you prove yourself trustworthy with what you’ve been given, you set yourself up for greater opportunities down the road. But don’t just focus on the big wins— take care of the little things. Small, smart decisions compound over time and lead to long-term success.
Generosity is another principle that has shaped my approach to wealth. It’s one thing to accumulate resources, but it’s another to use them for the benefit of others. Generosity is a cycle—when you give, you receive. And it’s not just about money; it’s about giving your time, your talents, your energy. The more you pour into others, the more you create a flow of awbundance in your own life. It’s like planting seeds in the soil—you sow into others, and eventually, that seed grows into something greater than yourself.
By applying these principles, I believe you’ll experience a richness far beyond what money can buy. Wealth is a tool. Use it wisely, and it will serve you and others well. Keep your focus on what truly matters—work hard, stay humble, live generously, and trust God with the rest. When you do, you’ll discover the kind of prosperity that leads to a truly fulfilling life.
