CHRIST IS ALIVE IN US OLMCS hosts 2nd SANGKAN Senior High Sem. Karl Gabriel P. Perlas
O
ur Lady of Mt. Carmel Seminary organized and hosted the three-day SANGKAN Senior High School last January 29 to 31, 2020 with the theme: “Christus Vivit in Nobis!” or “Christ is Alive in Us”. Over five hundred delagates from seventeen (17) participating seminaries took part in the gathering of minor seminarian brothers. Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary – Vigan, St. Mary’s Seminary – Laoag, Immaculate Conception Seminary – Bulacan, Maria Assumpta Seminary – Cabanatuan, Mary Help of Christians Seminary – Pangasinan, Mother of Good Counsel Seminary – Pampanga, St. John Paul II Minor Seminary –Antipolo, Oblates of St. Joseph Minor Seminary – Batangas,
San Carlos Seminary – Makati, Holy Rosary Seminary – Naga, Our Lady of Peñafrancia Seminary – Sorsogon, St. Benedict Diocesan Seminary – Libmanan, St. Gregory the Great Minor Seminary – Albay, Seminario de Jesus Nazareno – Borongan, John Paul Seminary – Catarman, Northern Samar, Sacred Heart Seminary – Leyte, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Seminary – Sariaya were the participating seminaries. SANGKAN or Isang Angkan kay Kristo intended to promote camaraderie and brotherhood among seminarians. Bishop Emilio Z. Marquez, Bishop Emeritus of Lucena, officially opened the event with a Holy Mass along with his Episcopal Ordination anniversary last January 29, 2020 at the Kamay ni Hesus Healing Center Church. Bishop Marquez said in his homily, “The devil will do everything to pull you out from the
seminary. The best way to overcome it is through prayer. If you don’t like to pray, go out of the seminary, you’re not for the seminary”. Afterwhich, delegates were given time to roam around the Kamay ni Hesus. A motorcade on the way back to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Seminary (OLMCS) followed. Indoor games highlighted the afternoon session of the first day. College seminarians from the Philosophy Department of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Seminary, Lucban Quezon artbitrated the indoor games. Seminario De Jesus Nazareno won the first place in Table Tennis. In Chess, Mary Help of Christians Seminary prevailed. Sacred Heart Seminary triumphed both in Darts and Dama. Sacred Heart Seminary won the game of words in Scrabble. Mary Assumpta Seminary achieved their championship win in Pool. And OLMCS’
Sem. Gabriel Gambala proved his Game of the Generals prowess in winning the indoor game for the third consecutive time. After the vespers and dinner, OLMCS brought the Sariaya’s culture and festivity come to life during the Cultural Night held in OLMCS Gymnasium. Sariaya’s Niyogyugan Dancers fired up the night of festivity as they showed and promoted the icon of the Quezon Province which is the coconut. Dancers from St. Joseph Academy of Sariaya, Quezon Senior High School department heated up the stage as they grooved with the latest dance trends. A zumba session and dance face-off from the dancers and the crowd highlighted the cultural night. Certification of appreciation to performance sponsors were given afterwards. The cultural night ended with a fireworks display at the OLMCS grounds.
Almost a hundred alumni from different batches gathered for the celebration of the 78th founding anniversary of the seminary. An ecological tree-planting activity started the celebration. Alumni also staged a basketball tournament up against different batches of Batang Carmelos. Flos Carmeli Association, the official alumni association of OLMCS, held an election. Elected-officers were blessed by Rector, Rev. Fr. Edwin O. Panergo. Current seminarians also prepared a mini museum featuring the seminary history, relics, achievements, and SANGKAN stories over the years. This was in light of commemorating the past seminary lives of the alumni. A penitential rite was done during the afternoon. Confession and Holy Mass were part of the rites. Most Rev. Mel Rey M. Uy, D.D. led the Holy Mass and gave an inspirational homily for the alumni. Socialization followed after. Different dance performances and song numbers from resident seminarians graced the night to honor and gratify the presence of the alumni for this 78th celebration. During the dinner, the Rector also showed a video presentation of the Gym ni Carding Project where innovations on the seminary gymnasium were presented. Alumni likewise shared their insights about the project. The anniversary night was concluded by a closing remarks from Rev. Fr. Edwin O. Panergo.
