Since its initiation in 2012, the Adequan Global Dressage Festival has matured into one of the largest dressage circuits in the world, and this year’s festival is particularly exciting as riders compete in the months leading up to the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, N.C. World’s Top Dressage Riders In Wellington For The 2018 AGDF
Maturing into one of the largest dressage circuits in the world, the Adequan Global Dressage Festival is home to top-level national and international competition right here in Wellington. This year’s AGDF is setting the stage for top horse and rider combinations, and laying the stepping stones leading up to the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, N.C. Great Charity Challenge Passes $12 Million In Local Donations
Great Charity Challenge founders Mark, Katherine and Paige Bellissimo join key sponsors and representatives of this year’s top-winning charities.
The ninth annual Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments, was held Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The event distributed $1.5 million to local nonprofit organizations, bringing the grand total to more than $12 million since its creation in 2010. Riders Shane Sweetnam, Lindsey Tomeu and Chloe White, sponsored by Spy Coast Farm/Lisa Lourie and Monica Preston, and corporate sponsor Dever Golf Cars, took the top prize for the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County. Coming in second were Carly Dvorkin, Daisy Farish and David Blake riding for Quantum House, and Stem HQ/TechGarage riders Gia Rinaldi, Kennedy McCauley and Haylie Rolfe finished third.

Top Dressage Competitor Adrienne Lyle Enjoys Her Horse-Centered Life By Y.A. Teitelbaum
U.S. Olympic dressage rider Adrienne Lyle always wanted to have a career centered around horses. Lyle was born and raised on the south end of Whidbey Island, Wash., about 30 miles north of Seattle. Her dad and brother are lawyers, while her mom is a pediatrician. Although not an equestrian family, they keep active. Her mom enjoys downhill skiing and the occasional trail ride. Her brother runs in Ironman triathlons. Lyle took a fork in the road and opted to pursue her passion from an early age. Growing up on a cattle farm with horses has that affect. “My parents were always very supportive, but this has always been my thing,” said the 33-year-old Lyle, who is in Wellington for the winter season. “I’m sure my parents were completely stressed. My path was always so clear to me. I was definitely one of those girls who was horse-crazy. I never had a Plan B. I’m really glad the horse thing is working out so far, because that’s all I ever wanted to do.” Although her family didn’t live and breathe horses, her younger cousin Maya Black shared her passion. “Adrienne is still the same smart, hardworking, determined, kind and talented person she was back when we were growing up and riding together on Whidbey Island,” said Black, a rising star in three-day eventing. “Those qualities, paired with her incredible horsemanship, is what has brought her such immense success in her young career. I have no doubt this is just the beginning for her. She has always been
a role model to me, and I am so proud of her.” So far, so good for Lyle. Lyle’s highlights include representing the U.S. at the 2012 Olympics in London and the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, along with numerous first-place finishes in major Grand Prix competitions. Her short-term plan for the rest of the winter season is to qualify for the FEI World Cup (April 11-15 in Paris) with Salvino, an 11-year-old bay stallion. The combination finished first in two Grand Prix competitions early in the Wellington season. After that, she wants to be part of the U.S. team that trains in Europe preparing for the prestigious World Equestrian Games in September at Mark Bellissimo’s Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina. But she is already preparing her horses for an even bigger competition. “The next big goal is the Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo,” said Lyle, who is based out of Sun Valley, Idaho. “I’m blessed to have three Grand Prix horses. Who goes depends on who peaks at the right
time; who is happy and healthy at the moment.” In addition to Salvino, Lyle is also working hard with Horizon, an 11-yearold Oldenburg mare, and Harmony’s Duval, a 10-year-old KWPN gelding. Lyle’s rise to becoming a force in dressage got off to an inauspicious start. She started riding western style and going on trail rides with friends on her parent’s farm. She joined the local chapter of the U.S. Pony Club when she was seven and soon began competing in three-day eventing, which was how she was first introduced to dressage. Eventing competition consists of dressage, cross-country and show jumping. “I fell in love with dressage,” Lyle said. “I was so fascinated by it. I learned a lot by watching videos, and then spent hours trying to duplicate what I saw on the videos.” Lyle went from learning the sport on her own to training and working with U.S. Olympian Debbie McDonald, with whom she has been with for more than a decade. While with McDonald, Lyle began working with horses owned by Betsy Juliano, including Horizon. Her

daily routine includes waking up at 5:45 a.m. and getting to the barn by 7 a.m. “I just love Adrienne,” Juliano said. “We have gotten to know one another better and better over the past six years. At first, I knew her solely as an excellent rider and the protege of Debbie McDonald. But, as we have worked together, I have also come to know her as a deeply compassionate person whose commitment to her profession is her top priority. This means she takes care of herself as an athlete, she oversees superb care of the horses, and she is able to strategize for each horse’s training and their future.” Juliano appreciates Lyle’s demeanor and thoughtfulness. “Adrienne is always quick to demonstrate her gratitude and thanks. Many years ago, before I knew her very well, I received a handwritten note from out of the blue,” Juliano recalled. “She was in Europe, but wrote to say how much she appreciated donations made to the USET Foundation by people like me because they enabled her to compete as a member of a team. I was so surprised to receive the note, and so appreciative.” Lyle wants to keep developing horses, unlocking the puzzle that can get them to top level, where at international levels, fractions of a percent can make a big difference.

“Dressage” comes from a French term often translated as “to train a horse to high collection.” The strength, training and development of the top dressage horses often take as long as five years. Top horse and rider pairs are expected to perform a series of predetermined movements in front of a panel of three to five judges placed at different places around the arena, memorized from one of the FEI Grand Prix tests. Wellington attracts quite a few of the top riders in the sport; athletes who use the warm climate to build confidence and strength in their horses to prepare for big championships like the Olympics, the World Equestrian Games and the annual indoor World Cup competitions. 2018 is a big year for dressage riders who seek to qualify to represent their country at September’s World Equestrian Games. On the following pages, we highlight a few of the Faces of Dressage who compete here in Wellington.

LAURA GRAVES Laura Graves and her horse Verdades have a strong bond of harmony and talent clear to all who watch the pair master the sport of dressage. Graves and her mother bought the horse as a foal from Holland, and she set to work to master each step of the training. In 2014, she blew the judges away at the U.S. Dressage Championships in Gladstone, N.J. She not only placed second overall, she also received one of the highest scores of any American rider and qualified for the 2014 World Equestrian Games. That summer, her first time in Europe to compete, the pair impressed the judges at the CHIO Aachen 5* and then at the WEG in Normandy, France. In 2015, at the FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas, she finished fourth. Later that year, she competed at the Pan American Games in Toronto, where she won the team gold medal and the individual silver medal. In 2016, Graves competed at her first Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She won the bronze medal in the team competition and earned the fourth position individually. So far in 2018, she scored an 84.675 percent in CDI-World Cup Qualifier FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, in which she has her first of two qualifying scores to be invited to the FEI World Cup to be held in April in Paris.

She has long been a champion of the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center and also one of the founding members in building the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. CHRISTOPH KOSCHEL Christoph Koschel comes from the best in Germany, as his father recently retired from running one of the top training facilities in the world. After graduating as a lawyer, Christoph joined his father at their training stables. Koschel competed at the 2010 World Equestrian Games and the 2011 European Dressage Championship, winning top medals. He has had the most success with the gelding Donnperignon, placing sixth at the World Equestrian Games in Lexington with the bronze-medal-winning German team. Koschel is known as a great coach. He coaches a lengthy roster of international riders, including his niece, Felicitas Hendricks, a top German Junior Division Rider, and all of the Japanese dressage team riders, including Kiichi Harada here in Wellington. He coached Harada at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. KASEY PERRY-GLASS Kasey Perry-Glass represented the U.S. at the 2016 Olympics, winning the team bronze medal with Laura Graves, Steffen Peters and Allison Brock. Perry-Glass and her remarkable Grand Prix horse, 15-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding Goerklintgaards Dublet, continue to wow the sport. The daughter of Robert and Diane Perry, she has five siblings. In 2016, she married Dana Glass, a Wellington-based trainer of young horses. The entire family — known as “Team Believe” — is tight-knit. For example, one of her sisters travels with her to help look after her horses. Perry-Glass works closely with Olympian Debbie McDonald at their Wellington winter base. She began training with McDonald during the 2015 European tour and continues to soar high in the Wellington competition series. In 2017, at the Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Festival of Champions in Gladstone, N.J., Perry-Glass and Dublet placed first the first day to best the field of seven in the FEI Grand Prix Test with 73.700 percent. The second day, they placed fifth in the Grand Prix Special with 68.529 percent. On the third day, in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, they placed second with a score of 73.325 percent. Their scores assured them the overall 2017 Grand Prix National Championship.

KATHERINE BATESON-CHANDLER Katherine Bateson-Chandler, born in Great Britain, moved to New Jersey when she was 13. Starting at age 16, she worked for American dressage star Robert Dover for 16 years until his retirement in 2007. She tacked up and assembled horses for his business, at home, as well as traveled with the horses to international competitions. Based in Wellington, Bateson-Chandler and Alcazar compete at the Grand Prix level and hope to qualify for upcoming championships. She has enjoyed exceptional success in the U.S. and Europe with the support of Jane Forbes Clark, owner of Alcazar. Currently, Bateson-Chandler trains each summer in Europe with Olympian Carl Hester and gains international exposure competing abroad. In 2017, Bateson-Chandler and Alcazar won over the crowd and the judges with a sensational first-place performance in the CDI 4* Grand Prix Freestyle at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. They went on to compete for the U.S. alongside the country’s top riders in the 2017 Uggerhalne, Denmark CDIO Nations Cup, and then helped Team USA claim the bronze at the 2017 Hickstead FEI CDIO3* Nations Cup. Bateson-Chandler and Alcazar recently won the Grand Prix Special during week five of this year’s AGDF.

TINNE VILHELMSON-SILFVÉN Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvén of Sweden is one of the greatest dressage riders of all time. The seven-time Olympian is a master of riding and training young horses into being some of the best in the world. In this, her eighth year coming to Florida for competition, she brings a handful of her top horses for only a couple of months to build confidence and compete in the warmer climate. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “I’ve found coming to Florida to be a super opportunity,” she said. “To be able to go back to the same ring for many weekends allows me to have the chance to explain to my horses that it’s OK. This is how international competition looks. The entire international atmosphere is here, but going time and time again, weekend after weekend, gives me a chance to try to ride with less power to give them confidence.” Vilhelmson-Silfvén has also competed at five World Equestrian Games and 10 European Dressage Championships. She has won three bronze medals in team competitions at European championships, and also competed at six editions of the Dressage World Cup finals. She has already qualified for her seventh World Cup Final, to be held this April in Paris.

JUAN MATUTE GUIMON JR. Juan Matute Guimon Jr. is a dressage rider from Spain who has lived more than half his life in Wellington. With three-time Olympian Juan Matute Sr. as his father, coach and trainer, Matute Jr. continues to make an international name for himself. Sponsored by Yeguada de Ymas, the young rider continuously proves he can ride with the best in the world. He works six to seven horses a day, six days a week, and each gain the correct basic training for a strong career ahead. Training and competing in Wellington is the precursor to the Spanish National Championships held each May, where Matute Jr. works to qualify to represent his country at upcoming championships. His three main competition horses for 2018 are Quantico Ymas, Don Diego Ymas and Copernico Ymas. He arrived back in Wellington after a successful 2017 summer with key European wins on the Under 25 circuit. He is a perfectionist by nature in a sport where timing and discipline mean everything. He works to present a performance that looks as easy as possible. Organization plays a role in helping Matute Jr. handle those moments of pressure, and he sticks to his routine on competition days. A superstar of a rider and young man, Matute Jr. one to watch in 2018.

SHELLY FRANCIS An international dressage star who has spent almost two decades in top-level competition, Shelly Francis is a gifted rider and trainer of top dressage horses. Nurturing confidence in her horses through a systematic process, whether at home at Roundabout Farm in Loxahatchee, or at an international competition, she feels especially encouraged when a top European rider compliments her on a horse’s training. Since the early 2000s, Francis has teamed with horse owner Patricia Stempel and consistently scores in the highest rankings throughout the national and international circuits. In 1996, Francis was selected as an alternate for the Atlanta Olympics. The next year, she and her mount, Pikant, won the U.S. Dressage Federation’s Grand Prix Champion Horse of the Year. In 1998, Francis competed at the World Equestrian Games in Rome and, in 2005, took her horse, Dominion, to the top six in the U.S. team rankings. For the last three years, she competed on the international CDI European Tour circuit with mounts Doktor and Danilo, finding success in the show ring and landing her at the top of the U.S. rankings. She will continue to compete this season, looking to be invited to compete at the World Cup in Paris.

ASHLEY HOLZER One of the all-time great top coaches, trainers and riders, four-time Olympian Ashley Holzer recently changed her citizenship from Canadian to American after being based out of New York since 1994. Holzer began riding as a teen, first entering the Grand Prix ring in the 1980s. She was a member of Canada’s bronze medal dressage team at the 1988 Olympics and represented Canada at the World Equestrian Games in 1990, 2002 and 2006, and the World Cup Finals in 1989 and 2009. She won team gold and silver at the Pan American Games in 1991 and 2003, respectively. Holzer has been competing in Wellington for decades and is a true professional, sharing her talents while teaching and competing. This year, she rides Havanna 145, owned by Diane Fellows, in the international ring, while she brings along several others in the national Grand Prix classes for a strong CDI future. She coaches many riders, including P.J. Rizvi, Jill Irving and Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu. Holzer is always one to watch for grace and precision. She works not only to get herself qualified for upcoming championships; but also to help others qualify. Holzer is a person who inspires others through her work-ethic and discipline — and a true champion to watch in action.

SUSAN PAPE Riding for Great Britain, Susan Pape works with John and Leslie Malone of Harmony Sporthorses. This will be her third year traveling to Florida from northern Germany, where her husband Ingo Pape and family own Hengststation Pape, a huge breeder of world-renowned German dressage and jumping horses. A superb dressage competitor, Susan Pape competes Hanoverian gelding Harmony’s Fiorano and top breeding and competition stallion Harmony’s Don Noblesse, along with a few up-and-coming horses. Whether competing in the U.S. or Europe, Pape is always a contender. She has found success in preparing her horses through the young horse divisions, often placing in the Louisdor Cup Finals for German Developing Grand Prix Horses. Pape’s sponsors have given their team, which includes Michael Klimke, Scott and Susanne Hassler, and up-and-coming rider Luuk Mourits, an opportunity to concentrate on top sport. They work together during the winter season, at a beautiful facility only a few minutes from the Wellington showgrounds. World’s Top Dressage Riders In Wellington For The 2018 Adequan Global Dressage Festival By Kim Beaudoin
Since its initiation in 2012, the Adequan Global Dressage Festival has matured into one of the largest dressage circuits in the world. Presenting top-level national and international level competition over the course of 10 weeks, this year’s AGDF is setting the stage for top horse and rider combinations, and laying the stepping stones leading up to the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, N.C. The 2018 AGDF is taking place once again at the Stadium at Equestrian Village in Wellington. The festival opened Jan. 4 and continues through March 31. This winter circuit provides an indispensable opportunity for riders who are seeking scores for the World Equestrian Games, as the 2018 AGDF is hosting four WEG qualifying events throughout the circuit. “This year, we will see riders from all over the world coming to Wellington to prepare for the World Equestrian Games Tryon 2018,” said Thomas Baur, director of sport for the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. “We are presenting a new structure of classes at the Grand Prix level, as well as Small Tour levels, and are welcoming top judges that will also be featured at the WEG.” The 2018 AGDF season features four CDI-Ws, a CDI 4* and CDI 5*, as well as a CDIO3* and two CPEDI competitions. Local spectators are welcome to come out and enjoy world-renowned competition, as the show is always open to the public with free general admission. The weekly Friday Night Stars events take place every Friday during international CDI
competition weeks and present the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle class, where combinations ride to choreographed musical routines. The nights also bring musical acts and various forms of outside entertainment, which are scattered throughout the evening festivities. The season opened Thursday, Jan. 4 with the first Para-Equestrian Dressage CPEDI 3* competition. AGDF 2 also played host to a CPEDI 3* in mid-January. Para-Equestrian sports allow athletes with physical and visual disabilities to excel in equestrian events and competitions designed for the able-bodied, and do so by creating a structured and highly competitive environment. Para-dressage is conducted under the same basic rules as able-bodied dressage, but with riders divided into different competition grades based on their physical abilities. There is no greater evidence of the incredible bond, trust and communication between horse and rider than in para-dressage. This Paralympic sport is a humbling reminder of the strength and determination of the human spirit. The AGDF 2018’s first CDI-W competition of the season was held Thursday, Jan. 11, as well as a national horse show. AGDF 3 commenced Wednesday, Jan. 24 with the second CDI-W and national competitions. International dressage competition reconvened Thursday, Feb. 8 with the season’s only CDI 5*, featuring the very best riders in the world producing some of the most thrilling test execution of the winter season. AGDF 6 began Friday, Feb. 16 with three days of national competition. AGDF 9 is also set to host a national competition from March 9-11. The third CDI-W took place

AGDF 8, beginning on March 1, welcomes the historic Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W and the fourth annual Palm Beach Derby, an exciting event that features riders competing at Small Tour level with unfamiliar horses to see who can ride to the best score. The Palm Beach Dressage Derby remains one of the longest-standing dressage competitions in South Florida and continues to be a seasonal highlight for resident competitors of the South Florida dressage community. AGDF 10 will welcome the only CDI
4* of the season ahead of AGDF 12’s FEI Nations Cup CDIO 3*, as well as the final Friday Night Stars competition of the circuit. New Sponsors Re-Energize 2018 AGDF Circuit

Dressage has long been a sport of passion for many of the riders who compete both nationally and internationally. For years, the sport of dressage was only noticed by those who participated or understood the technical difficulties executed by horse and rider combinations, but now sponsors from around the world are flocking to the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in hopes of gaining exposure and presence with the South Florida dressage community. Less than a decade ago, the grounds of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival sat vacant, only a few grassy polo fields, while the hunter/ jumper circuit of the Winter Equestrian Festival thrived just across South Shore Blvd. A group of dressage competitors, owners and trainers banded together to address the lack of the sport in Wellington, the horse capital of the world. Soon the AGDF circuit was born, and not long after that, sponsorship of the sport started to steadily increase. As one of the wealthiest dressage circuits in the world, the AGDF has welcomed sponsors from all facets of industries over the years, and will welcome new-

AGDF comers like NetJets and CaptiveOne Advisors this year, while maintaining its traditional support from sponsors like Adequan, Havensafe Farm and Stillpoint Farm. “It has been incredible to see the expansion of support over the past few years, and we are welcoming more and more new faces to our sponsorship group here with each season,” AGDF Director of Sport Thomas Baur said. “The sponsorship is very critical in the success of the circuit each year and has made AGDF one of the most prestigious dressage tours in the world.” The sponsorship of the circuit has provided a platform for many of the sport’s most talented riders, offering them access to a multi-week elite training ground at the festival, ultimately helping to improve their experience in international competition and championship atmospheres. All four members representing Team USA in the sport of dressage at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, which went on to earn the team bronze medal, all competed at least once at the AGDF over the course of the season. It provided a winter training base for the team to collectively train together and gain experience that would help them earn the first dressage medal for Team USA since 2004. Welcoming hundreds of riders and even more spectators and fans over the course of the 12 weeks of competition, the festival has grown into something that many believed was never possible — all with the help of a group of passionate individuals and many dedicated sponsors and supporters. The circuit continues to thrive each season, and as opportunities continue to arise for competitors, they simultaneously expand for major sponsors and corporations eager to increase or begin their involvement in the sport. What To Do At Friday Night Stars At Equestrian Village

Every Friday night during international competition weeks at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival welcomes an array of talent from the weekly show lineup to perform musical freestyles under the lights, in what has come to be known as “Friday Night Stars” featuring the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, the highlight class of the week for dressage competition. The event is held at Equestrian Village, located at 13500 South Shore Blvd., home of the AGDF. A musical freestyle is a personally choreographed dressage test accompanied by music specifically composed for each
competing duo, which begins as they make their way down centerline. Not only are the rides compelling, but they are also exciting to watch and exemplify the deep communication before horse and rider in the discipline of dressage. Spectators and judges will see performances ridden to a variety of melodies, from classical orchestra music to today’s hits by Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars. Riders compete to earn points with a system of scoring that reflects the degree of difficulty per routine and test. This season at AGDF has already seen some impressive talent under the lights in front of growing and engaged crowds.

AGDF The first CDI-W Grand Prix Freestyle took place on Jan. 12 and presented a victory to Swedish rider Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvén aboard Lövsta Stuteri’s Paridon Magi. The duo rode to a Queen medley and achieved their highest score to date with an 81.15 percent. Highlights from the tests seen thus far in the season have included perfected one-handed pirouettes, which were executed in young Juan Matute Guimon’s performance, earning him the third-place spot for the evening aboard mount Quantico Ymas. Matute rode to a modern upbeat musical collaboration, while second-place finisher Shelly Francis wowed the crowd with a cappella tunes to accompany her ride on Patricia Stempel’s Danilo. “We have been thrilled with the development of the Friday Night Stars competitions since the start of dressage at the venue many years ago,” said Michael Stone, president of Equestrian Sport Productions. “These are many of the top competi-
tors in the world in the sport of dressage, and it’s quite unique that we have access to them right here in Wellington. It speaks to the growth of the AGDF each year and the continued support we receive each season.” Alongside the top international competition is always a variety of both equine and non-equine entertainment throughout the evening, which in the past has featured mustang demonstrations, horsemanship seminars, live music and more. Multiple food vendors are available to the general public, while hospitality tables in the VIP tent are available for purchase prior to the classes on Friday evening and include a full catered buffet and prime viewing of the class. The evening offers free general admission to the public with $10 on-site parking, as well as $20 valet parking. You will never see P.J. Rizvi making her way down centerline without a smile on her face. A zest for life and an electrifying energy have made Rizvi a well-known name in the dressage arena — and they are the same characteristics that have made her a well-known name in the equestrian community years before her first international dressage show.

The mother of four serves as a beacon of light for her family, inspiring them and always looking to guide them on the path of self-success. Rizvi and her family own Peacock Ridge Farm and are proud sponsors of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. In honor of her late sister Penny, Rizvi is also co-chair of Polo With A Purpose, a charitable event held every winter to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington. Now an avid horsewoman, Rizvi’s introduction to the horse world was anything but conventional. “I was really sick when I was growing up,” she recalled. “I was always sick with asthma and pneumonia, but for as long as I can remember, my sister and I had planned on buying a horse together when we were older. We actually had one picked out, and not long after that, my sister ended up getting sick, and they diagnosed her with leukemia. She died about 11 months later. So, there I was, with no horse knowledge, but with this horse that we had picked out together.”

“We try to keep a grasp on what is important,” P.J. Rizvi said. “We’ve been very clear with our children that this is a journey.” Despite her limitations, Rizvi continued on with the horse as a way to honor her sister’s memory. “When I got him,” she said, “I had no idea what I was doing. I had no experience. I didn’t even know what a diagonal was. I just used to visit him, and the significant thing for me was when I started riding him for emotional therapy. It was sort of a calming mechanism and a way for me to think about my sister.” After Penny’s death, Rizvi’s health declined once again. She underwent throat surgery, several cases of pneumonia and a scary episode of cardiac arrest. With that, the horses were put on
hold. Despite the setbacks, Rizvi became friends with dressage star Ashley Holzer, whom she remains close with to this day. “Fast forward to my late 20s, as a wedding present, my husband got me 12 dressage lessons with Ashley,” Rizvi said. “But soon after, in my 30s, I had four children over the span of six years, so I didn’t really commit steadily to riding. I always say, ‘In my teens I was too sick, in my 20s I was too broke, in my 30s I was too pregnant, so now in my 40s, I’m doing it!” Holzer went on to compete in the 2012 London Olympics on Rizvi’s original amateur Prix St. Georges horse
turned Grand Prix mount, Breaking Dawn. “He was the first nice horse I ever bought,” Rizvi said. “He was never meant to do the Grand Prix, and I got really lucky. ‘Edward’ is now 17 going on 5, and he’s really a horse of a lifetime. He’s a spirit to contend with.” Making her way down centerline for her first CDI a little over a year and a half ago, Rizvi’s talent in the show ring has excelled just recently. However, the success isn’t why she chooses to invest her time in the sport. “This is a long-term sport,” she said. “Anyone who thinks that this is short term is short-sighted. It’s something

that you enjoy for your entire life. People comment about the fact that I smile all of the time, and I’m like, ‘Well, of course! I worked hard to be here, and I’m going to enjoy every second of it.’ Even if it doesn’t go as well as I want it to, you aren’t judged by your mistakes, you’re judged by how you handle them. Life is a long road full of many tests, and for me, riding is therapy, and it brings me great joy. I don’t really have an agenda. I just do this because I love it, and it makes me happy.” Rizvi credits her husband for his patience and support of her passion, as well as their children’s. “We have four children — three daughters who ride and PHOTOS COURTESY RIZVI FAMILY

a son who was playing polo, and then switched to tennis,” she said. “My three girls are all very different in personality, and their riding reflects that as well.” Talented in the hunter/jumper rings, the three Rizvi daughters keep their horses at North Run Farm and train with Missy Clark. They each shine with passion for horses, a trait that they share with their mother. Although the Rizvis support their children’s equestrian endeavors, their main goal is to always show them what is right, even if it isn’t easy. This often involves late nights, early mornings and a large dose of self-awareness mixed with life lessons.
“We try to keep a grasp on what is important,” she said. “We’ve been very clear with our children that this is a journey,” Rizvi said. “Riding improves your social skills, your discipline, your manners, it makes you open-minded, you can travel, you can meet other people, but at the end of the day, it’s one aspect of their life. It’s something that you develop, but it’s not the only thing. As the girls have gotten older, they’ve had to go to school on Friday, they can’t skip it for the show. They go to regular school, they try other activities and they have friends outside of the horse world.” Above all, Rizvi’s main message to her children is a simple one. “Ride well, ride responsibly, love your horses and dedicate as much time as you need to, but try other things and live life to the fullest every day,” she said.

Leatherdale Farms Celebrates Second Consecutive Dressage Breeder Award Story and Photos by Annan Hepner
Leatherdale Farms has long been recognized for its superior-quality Hanoverian breeding program, both in the United States and in Germany. The Leatherdale team includes high performance riders and horses that compete in many different countries, but three riders choose to train and show in Wellington during the winter season in order to gain experience competing in a topnotch environment. For the second year in a row, Louise Leatherdale and Leatherdale Farms received the prestigious Adequan/USDF Dressage Breeder of the Year award after earning top scores at the 2017 Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington and at other competitions in the United States. In addition to the breeder award, many of Leatherdale’s young horses also received recognition in the USDF Horse of the Year awards, as well as in the American Hanoverian Society year-end awards. With an impressive score of 192,

which was nearly 100 points higher than the next breeder, the Leatherdale Farms breeding program was rewarded with the extraordinary averages of several sport horses, many of which are by its own stallions. “The Leatherdale Farms horses are very talented and the top breeding is evident in the creation of very intelligent and athletic horses,” Leatherdale Farms young horse rider/trainer Mike Suchanek said. Suchanek also credits the teams’ success to the pride Leatherdale and her late husband, Doug, had for their operation, as well as their dedication and passion for the horses. “Doug and Louise really took their time and did their research to handpick the lineages, as they wanted to create a line of horses that were talented but also had great minds,” Suchanek explained. “Louise is a very special woman
— she carries on the passion that Doug had for this sport and for the horses. I think that keeps them happy and successful,” Suchanek said, expressing optimism for the coming years. “When the horses are mentally and physically ready to develop, they are eager to learn, and it’s a lot of fun to be able to keep training them up the levels and have them keep progressing.” Recently in Wellington, Olympian Sue Blinks and Creech have earned high marks from judges on Leatherdale’s upper-level horses. Blinks rode Habanero L in his Grand Prix debut, while Creech won the opening Prix St. Georges CDI with Robbie W and headed down centerline aboard Diana C in the CDI3* Grand Prix. Though many equestrians from around the world flock to Wellington for the winter season, many riders, trainers and horse enthusiasts who cannot make the migration to South Florida rely on digital news to keep up with all of the action from the winter equestrian capital of the world. While there are a handful of media outlets that travel to Wellington for the Winter Equestrian Festival and the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, PS Dressage is one of the few outlets that focus solely on the sport of dressage. Hepner joined the PS Dressage team upon graduating from the University of Virginia in 2015 with a double major in foreign affairs and media. An
avid dressage competitor who participated in the USEF/USDF Young Rider Graduate Program and proud member of the USDF Youth Programs Advisory Subcommittee, Hepner was excited for the opportunity to branch out of the defense contracting sector and enter into the professional equestrian media industry. “Being able to blend my passion for dressage with my journalism studies has been more than I could have ever hoped for,” Hepner said. “I feel that it is a real privilege to share photos, videos and interviews for spectators who could not attend the competitions themselves. Media is so vital for growing our sport’s support and following.” Staff writer Emma Miller has been with PS Dressage since the beginning of the 2017 season. After graduating from Wilson College with a degree in equine journalism, she had her sights set on en-
tering the equestrian media field. She was hopeful about continuing on in the horse industry after riding and showing throughout her adolescence and competing with her school’s Intercollegiate Dressage Association team. When Miranda Van Kol arrived in Wellington in 1999, little did she know that she would call the village home. Almost 20 years later, she is the current stable manager at Marcus Fyffe Dressage and is based year-round in the winter equestrian capital. After garnering an impressive grooming and stable management resume that took her all around the world, Van Kol is thrilled to have found her permanent home in Wellington. Van Kol’s career in equine management began when she was just 17 years old at an eventing barn in the Netherlands. She began working for Eric van der Vleuten, a Dutch Olympic show jumper, for six years before moving to Germany. The life-long equestrian also worked for Lynn Little, the Leading
Lady Rider in Donaueschingen, Germany, before starting with renowned show jumper Tani Zeidler and Olympic show jumper Joe Fargis. “My love of riding and the equestrian industry blossomed because of the people at that first eventing barn,” Van Kol explained. “After I worked with them for a while, I thought, ‘Why would I go to school when I have this?’ So I stayed. I love it, otherwise I wouldn’t do this job. It’s not just a job — it becomes your life. Your whole life revolves around horses.”
Throughout her career, Van Kol has been a top groom at nearly every large international competition, including the Paralympic Games, the World Cup Finals, the Dutch Championships, the European Championships, the Pan American Games, CHIO Aachen and multiple Olympic Games. Van Kol continued to work at the eventing barn and rose in status among the other workers there until she was considered the highest-level groom. Within that promotion, she was able to travel to all of the large shows with the competitors. As she traveled more, and later moved on to a jumper barn, she realized her passion for horse shows and the travel they involved. wellington the magazine | march 2018

“I got a little bit addicted to showing,” Van Kol laughed. “I wanted to see more of the world, meet new people and see more cultures.” In 1999, Van Kol left home in the Netherlands and made the big move “across the pond” to the United States. With her close friend, she drove direct-
ly south to Wellington after landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. When they arrived in Wellington a few days later, Van Kol was immediately impressed by the community. She knew right away that she had made the right decision in moving halfway across

the world. “It’s beautiful here!” Van Kol exclaimed. “When I first saw the barns down here, I thought they were mansions. I was shocked when a horse walked out the first time. We loved it here right away. Our hours were better, the shops are always open and I love the sun. There are a lot of equestrian jobs here, and you can only find this kind of community in Wellington. There’s always something to do.” Van Kol worked for several different barns when she first arrived in Wellington, traveling to many large shows all over the United States and Canada. In 2004, she was also able to visit her home in the Netherlands and attend the Paralympic Games in Athens as a groom. “That was one of my favorite experiences,” Van Kol recalled. “The joy all of the riders had was incredible and inspiring. They have a whole team behind them cheering them on, and you don’t
see that everywhere. It was just wonderful.” In 2015, Van Kol was recruited as the barn manager for Marcus Fyffe Dressage in Wellington. Run by Olympian David Marcus and international Grand Prix rider Nicholas Fyffe, the worldclass training operation boasts a team of highly experienced and skilled staff members. Van Kol has used her extensive knowledge and experience in grooming and barn management to help keep the full barn of elite equines in top shape and provide the best care possible. “David and Nicholas are hard workers; that’s what I like about them,” Van Kol said. “They are very straightforward, and so am I. That’s why we get along so well. We have the same sense of humor, which makes it fun. All three of us are on the same level. I give advice based on my knowledge, and they take it into consid-
eration. I think we work well together.” Van Kol recently purchased a house in Wellington and loves what the community has to offer. “I love, love, love it here,” Van Kol said. “I love the heat, and I definitely don’t miss the winters, which is why I
moved from the Netherlands. I settled down here because of the environment. There’s no place else like this in the world. The horse shows brought in a lot of jobs, and everyone is here in one place. All of my friends are here, too. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

Over the past eight years, the annual International Gay Polo Tournament has grown from a local polo event to a worldrenowned four-day festival celebrating the “sport of kings” and its diverse group of players. Under the direction of Chip McKenney and his Gay Polo League (GPL), the event offers the opportunity to experience fast-paced action, as well as encourages inclusion and charity, with proceeds from the kickoff Polotini Party benefiting high-risk LGBTQ youth, primarily in the areas of education, homelessness and health. In 2018, the ninth annual Land Rover Palm Beach International Gay Polo 90

Tournament and all its festivities will return to Wellington from April 5-8 at the world-class International Polo Club Palm Beach. This year, the tournament promises to be better than ever before, with both LGBTQ and straight players coming from around the world to compete and support the mission of the Gay Polo League. “Every year, the International Gay Polo Tournament gains valuable mo-
mentum. This year, we welcome new players, new sponsors and new fans,” said McKenney, founder and president of the Gay Polo League. “We also welcome returning players, sponsors and friends. We are vastly appreciative of the collective force behind our growth and recognize all who contribute in significant ways to the evolution of the GPL.” The Gay Polo League, the organizer and namesake of the tournament, is honored to formally support Compass, an LGBTQ community organization based in Lake Worth, during this year’s tournament. The Polotini Party, the kickoff event this year themed as “Wigstock,” will be held Friday, April 6 at the
Wanderers Club in Wellington, with the net proceeds of the evening donated to Compass’ Youth Services programs for the benefit of at-risk LGBTQ youth. Specifically, GPL hopes to raise the money needed to purchase several new computers for the program, as well as purchase health kits and food/shelter vouchers. “Currently, there are an estimated 1.6 million homeless youth in the United States. Of that number, 40 percent identify as LGBTQ, a staggering and disconcerting number of youth,” McKenney said. “Sadly, LGBTQ youth are at greater risk for suicide, murder, drug addiction, sexual violence and other
horrible threats young people should not be susceptible to. GPL intends to do something to help where it can, and however we can. Compass does a wonderful job helping LGBTQ youth, and this year our goal is to support their efforts.” Compass’ mission is to diminish stereotypes by challenging long-standing misconceptions about the LGBTQ community, a concept that falls in line with the foundation of the Gay Polo League. The International Gay Polo Tournament is a lively event that celebrates diversity in all its forms, making Compass a prime beneficiary of the weekend’s funds. By emboldening local youth,
promoting pride in the community, and acting as an educator, advocate, health service provider and focal point for community organizing, Compass promotes awareness of the caring nature of its eclectic community. “For nearly 30 years, Compass has provided lifesaving programs and services promoting the mental, physical and emotional health and well-being of LGBTQ youth in Palm Beach County. Despite recent progress, LGBTQ youth still face significant disparities compared to non-LGBTQ youth,” said Julia Murphy, chief development officer at Compass. “Compass is partnering with the Gay Polo League to expand services through

education, health services and addressing homelessness for LGBTQ youth in Palm Beach County. True to the nature of both GPL and Compass, players of varying sexualities will be playing in the fast-paced polo matches. “When I think back to watching GPL’s first tournament in Wellington, I had no idea then that polo would become such an integral part of my life. At first, I was just eager to learn to ride and try this amazing sport. Now I feel fortunate to play most of the year with super people and wonderful horses, improving my game while having a blast,” said Phil Tremo, a longtime player and supporter of the GPL. “Helping to organize the GPL tournament came easily for me, as I really enjoy meeting such a diverse group of people in Wellington and beyond.” Often regarded as one of the most highly anticipated social events of the year, the International Gay Polo Tournament added “award-winning event” to its repertoire in 2017 when it was honored as the LGBTQ Sporting Event of the Year by Connect Sports at the Connect Conference, held in New Orleans last August. BARNMANAGER Changing The Way Wellington’s Barns Are Run

Nicole Lakin was a working student for Max Amaya and his Stonehenge Stables when, one winter in Wellington, she realized something was missing — something that would make her job and the jobs of hundreds of other Wellington barn managers and staff members far simpler. Up until that point, there was no exemplary organizational tool for barn managers, nothing to help them communicate with their team, no real centralized system where they could house horses’ records, notes, to-do lists and charts, and access them from anywhere. So Lakin, who has been spending winters in Wellington since 2006, started creating Microsoft Excel and Word forms and documents to improve her own barn organization, and she posed a question to several other barn managers. “I was always looking for ways to get around communication issues and to be more organized. Once I started playing around with it, I realized that there was really a need for something more,” said Lakin, a graduate of New York University and the Babson F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business. “I was very lucky that I made some amazing friends who had been managers working with horses and managing complex organizations far longer than I had. I sat them all down one night at Tub Tim Thai in Wellington, and I went around the table and asked them what the most annoying thing was that they were constantly having trouble with,” Lakin explained. “Once we had a little

bit of a venting session about all of the things that could be better, I said, ‘If I built something to make those things better, would you guys use it?’ They all looked at me, and said, ‘Yes, of course!’” From that conversation over Thai food, the now industryleading, cloud-based software BarnManager was born. Lakin devoted much of the next year to carefully mapping out the features of the application — including calendars, record storage, list-making tools, a virtual “whiteboard” and more — and working with others on the design and build of the new program, before rolling it out to the equestrian community. “I think launching it was definitely one of the more exciting experiences of my life,” Lakin said. “It was really rewarding to actually see people using it, responding, giving us feedback. I say it took a solid year for it to really start picking up, but once it did, it took off pretty quickly. It’s always exciting when you get an e-mail saying, ‘Someone, who happens to manage one of the best riders in the world, told me I had to try it. She said it’s amazing, and she can’t live without it.’ It took a lot of time to get there, but it has been extremely rewarding.” Today, BarnManager is the official barn management software of U.S. Equestrian, the governing body of equestrian sport, and the program is utilized by barns throughout Wellington and around the country. The specialized software is accessible from anywhere by phone, tablet or computer, and offers features including unlimited horse information, health and wellness recording; the ability to upload attachments directly to records and easily access files; searchable barn-wide conversations and messaging, as well as private conversations and messaging; two-way calendar syncing, scheduling and important date reminders; a virtual “white-board” that takes the conventional barn white-board and makes it more accessible; customizable tables and free-form lists; and, most recently added, business management tools, including full accounting services. “We have a busy show barn and are often showing in two separate locations at once,” said Jo Seaver, who utilizes BarnManager in the management of Kenny and Linda Langmeier’s Kelianda Farm. “BarnManager has helped our staff stay organized and connected throughout the hectic show season. Having our vet, farrier and other records all in one easy access place has been a game changer.” Lakin hopes to continue to change the way barns are managed in Wellington and nationwide for the ease of the job and to allow barn managers to get back to why they likely

began the job in the first place: for the love of horses. “Nobody gets into the horse industry to be an accountant,” Lakin said. “We don’t want people spending all of their time on QuickBooks or behind a desk trying figure everything out. I strongly believe that when it comes to horses, there’s nothing that can replace something like a human being able to put their hand on a horse’s leg. So, everything that we do is keeping that in mind. Tota Comfort System Offers Continuing Advancements In Equine Performance Gear For Charles Tota, owner and operator of the Wellington-based tack shop the Dressage Connection, the comfort of horses is his top concern. “There is no shortage of advancements in places where tack can be continuously made more comfortable for horses,” said Tota, who has made it his commitment to the horse industry to continue to make advances in tack design to make horses more comfortable while performing. The United States Equestrian Federation recently changed the wording of its national rule book to read, “The object of dressage is the development of the horse into a happy athlete through harmonious education.” In recent years, the incorporation of the idea of horses being “happy athletes” has infiltrated into the judging and training methods used by horsemen in all of the international disciplines due to the increasing scrutiny of the public toward animal mistreatment. As a direct result, the products Tota has been designing are contributing to this wave by allowing trainers and riders to still condition horses to maximize their athletic development by eliminating any unnecessary conflict caused by uncomfortable equipment.

“Twenty years ago,” Tota recalled, “people used one saddle for every horse that they rode. Can you imagine making a group of 10 people all wear the same pair of pants?” Since then, custom saddle fitting has become popular, and more recently, custom designed tack, both services that Tota offers out of his shop. The latest in the line of Tota’s designs include his sternum relief girth. The horse’s sternum runs between the front legs where people have been tightening the girth for centuries. With riders needing to have their saddles essentially immobile on the horse’s backs in order to promote even the slightest of the rider’s aids and weight shifting to be interpreted by the horse, there have been plenty of girths designed to be tight and sticky to the horse’s body. This means that there is a lot of pressure on the horse’s sternum. “Imagine wearing essentially a tight belt around your chest,” Tota said. “Especially for anyone who is mildly claustrophobic, that can easily raise your anxiety level. The same is true for the horse.” The basic concept of this new girth is that there is a channel cut from the cen-
ter of the girth right over the sternum so that you can feel confident in tightening it to the point where the rider would need the security, yet the horse can still breathe comfortably. All involved can work feeling confident and comfortable. A similarity in design from this sternum relief girth is another advancement in the bridle design, where a similar channel is cut from the top of the headstall of the bridle for relief from the sensitive poll area of the horse. “There is essentially no end to the tweaks we will continue to make on the tack to keep trying to make it secure and, therefore, effective, but at the same time not putting pressure on any sensitive areas of the horse,” Tota said. Every other Olympic sport continuously designs equipment for the athletes that enhances performance. The difference with equestrian sports is that there are two athletes to consider, and Tota is working to make sure that no matter which discipline — dressage, jumping and eventing — that the equine element of the partnership shares equally in the comfort of performance gear. With more than 30 years serving local insurance needs, Bob and Karen Cavanagh put an emphasis on taking care of clients, while also taking care of their community. The Cavanaghs have been in the insurance field since the late 1970s and active members of the western communities since 1986. Residents of Wellington, they operate a longstanding Allstate agency in Royal Palm Beach. The Cavanaghs have been married for 38 years and have two children, who they raised in Wellington. The two met while working for Liberty Mutual in 1978. “Insurance brought us together and has kept us together ever since,” Karen said. In the early 1980s, the Cavanaghs began working with Allstate. Bob worked his way up from sales to management and now owns an independent Allstate agency. Karen is a licensed sales associate at the agency. The Cavanaghs provide auto, home, business and life insurance to numerous people in the community. Since relocating to Wellington from New York, the Cavanaghs have been in the same region serving as insurance providers for generations of local residents. “Many of our clients have been with us for the 32 years that we have been here. The only difference is that we now insure their kids and their grandkids, too” Bob said.

Many of the Cavanaghs’ clients are referral-based, which Bob credits to their high quality of customer service. Andrea Vallarella, the agency’s manager, has been working with the Cavanaghs for approximately 17 years, while Rhonda Totz, the agency’s sales producer, is soon coming up on her second year with the agency. Also part of the team is financial specialist Tom Van Etten, who has worked with the Cavanaghs for more than 15 years. He specializes in life insurance, IRAs, long-term care, 401K rollovers, and general financial and retirement planning. Together, they create the type of insurance company that knows and understands their clients individually and uniquely, making clients feel comfortable and secure — which is the Cavanaghs’ primary goal. this, Karen explained, is a serious promise. “Bob has left in the middle of dinner to meet a client at the scene of a car accident,” she said. The Cavanaghs also noted the contributions of former office manager Marilyn Lapsley, who recently retired after 23 years with the firm. “She was the heart and soul of our agency and contributed greatly to our success,” Karen said. “Since retiring, she has been traveling the world and is enjoying life to the fullest.” The Cavanaghs noted that they did not always aspire to be insurance providers. However, through their work in the insurance field, they found something that most people strive for in any line of work: fulfillment. They were first introduced to this fulfillment when they began helping people whose insurance policies had been previously terminated. They had the opportunity to get people on insurance policies that were fit for their specific circumstances, and, ultimately, help people during their times of need. Moreover, the Cavanaghs took the fulfillment they found in insuring people and reflected it on to their community. They have made serving the western communities and its people their priority and passion. Age Is Just A Number To World Traveler Dr. Wesley Boughner Of Wellington Story by Ray Burow • Photo by Abner Pedraza
“Age is just a number” is something of a cliché, but in the case of Wellington resident Dr. Wesley Boughner, it’s true. Boughner, who will celebrate his 81st birthday in August, doesn’t allow age to define him. He neither defies nor denies it, but concentrates on living and enjoying life with Barbara, his wife of four years. The octogenarians met and fell in love over the internet, which Boughner admits is unusual for seniors. It is also definitely not how he met his first wife, Joan. Boughner, originally from Trenton, Mich., and Joan, of New York City, met in Bermuda, where they both had agreed to teach art. They taught at one of the 480 schools serving military personnel and embassy officials overseas. “She had a master’s degree in art, and my undergraduate degree was in art. She was from New York City, so she taught me a lot about culture, because we didn’t have any theaters to go to in Trenton, Michigan,” Boughner said. Education has been an integral part of Boughner’s life. He started his career teaching, finished as an administrator and even served as a superintendent. Boughner holds a master’s degree in educational administration and, during America’s bicentennial year, received his doctorate in educational leadership from Nova University. “It was before Nova even had a campus. It had… a program that was developed by a man from Harvard. People who were working would come in on Saturdays. They would fly our instructors in from all over the United States,” Boughner recalled. For two years, he attended eight-hour classes every Saturday. “It was a very unusual program and developed into what we know now as Nova Southeastern University,” Boughner said. He was immersed in education as a teacher, an athletic director, a principal and assistant principal and, finally, a dis106 march 2018 | wellington the magazine
trict superintendent. If he had it all to do over again, which would he choose? “I would be a superintendent. There’s no doubt about it,” he answered. “Everywhere I went, I tried new programs. Overseas with the State Department, these companies had a tendency to use a product there first, to get the kinks out, before using it in the U.S. So, I was always on the cutting edge of education.” That’s not all that was afforded to Boughner. He and Joan enjoyed many opportunities to travel, visiting more than 140 countries. They embraced meeting people from all over the world and learning about their cultures. The couple often found themselves with strangers as they followed the road less traveled; exploring the less trendy spots that were remote to tourists and where welcoming locals congregated. These are treasured memories for Boughner, whose first wife died in 2005. It is fortunate that he and Joan were able to enjoy several years together following his retirement, since Boughner had promised himself that he would retire by age 55. He met his goal by one month. “I was really lucky, because if I had waited until we were 65 years old, we only would have had one year,” he said. “We had 11 years and traveled a lot.” Anyone who has the opportunity to speak with Boughner will quickly learn that traveling extensively has had an intense impact on the retired educator. “People are people. You hear all these tales, how we’re not the same as people overseas. It’s true that there are many places overseas politically that are not
like us, but people always like us. Everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like an American,” he said. He is convinced that people in other countries are attracted to the freedom and opportunities available to citizens of the United States. “We can say what we want. We do what we want,” said Boughner, who years ago turned down a job in Iraq. After a week of orientation, he found the place too dark and oppressive for women and realized that it wasn’t an experience he was interested in having. “Americans don’t understand what freedom is until they’ve seen areas where people do not have that freedom,” he said. “We take ourselves for granted. We are so lucky to be living in one of the freest countries in the world.” Boughner is a strong and vocal proponent for peace. He advocates for peace in his community and around the world. He’s a member of the Wellington Rotary Club and continues efforts that he initiated back when serving on the board. There are more than 30,000 Rotary Club chapters across the globe, and each month the Wellington Rotary Club selects a chapter to send a peace toast. The peace toast letter includes information about the Wellington Rotary Club. Primarily, it is an invitation to friendship. The letter also encourages the selected club to reach out in the same manner to a club in a separate corner of the world, in an offering of friendship and in the interest of world peace. Boughner’s advocacy for peace began years ago with the Peace Pole Project, when the Wellington Rotary Club began its Peace Initiative. The Rotary Peace Initiative begins each February and culminates with a celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace in September.

An individual or organization is chosen to receive an award for strides made toward peace through conflict resolution. The months prior to the big event are filled with community participation events to persuade people to use conflict resolution and multi-cultural understanding toward the goal of world peace. To Boughner, the greatest deterrent to peace is misunderstanding and politics. “Politics don’t often allow for true negotiations. You have one camp, and that camp promotes itself and its ideals, then a second camp another set of ideals,” he said. “To have world peace you’ve got to give up some of those ideals and compromise with your opponent to reach somewhere in the middle.” Boughner isn’t as involved as he has been in the past. Not that he’s giving up on being a peace advocate. He remains an active member of the Rotary. He also admits that he and Barbara don’t go out as often as they used to, but they still embrace life in Wellington. He is a strong believer in not giving up and giving in to the challenges of aging. Acceptance is key, according to Boughner, who deems that even with aches and pains, there’s still more to do. “You’ve got to make sure that you still have a life. There’s still much for you to experience, so you have to find something new,” he said. “There’s no reason why you can’t learn more when you’re getting older. There’s no reason why you can’t involve yourself in new opportunities and new projects. Read a book. Write poetry.” He has similar advice for young people. “You have to get involved in your community. Keep moving around. Meet people and enjoy life,” Boughner said. To know he’s well-respected is the legacy that Boughner wants to leave, and to know that he’s done something to make the world a better place.

Steven Prince of Ideal Lending Solutions is a peoplefocused mortgage loan officer. Raised in Wellington, Prince has been a professional lender for the past 20 years. He is confident in his capabilities and enjoys face-to-face contact with his clients. “I have a really cool profession because I am helping [people] and ushering in that American dream of home ownership — making it possible for people who didn’t think it was possible,” Prince said. “That’s really exciting to me, and that’s why I love what I do.” The nature of his industry is always changing, and he has to be adaptable. “Things are changing constantly,” Prince said. “My job now consists of, number one, product knowledge and trying to stay on top of the guidelines. They can be one way today, and by the end of the day, something changes.” So, Prince is always teaching real estate agents he works with, helping them perform their jobs to fulfill their duties to provide for clients. The clients, of course, being the people who are looking for a home that meets their wants and needs. Prince said one of the most important aspects about getting a client into his or her new home comes down to the contract. “It’s all about how you structure it for the underwriter,” he explained. “It comes back to how that deal is structured and how you can get things into the system, so product knowledge is about teaching my agents how to structure these deals.” Prince had been licensed since 1998, but after 2008, the mortgage rules and regulations changed. “Everyone had to go back to school and get a new license,” he said. “There was a new licensing requirement that kicked in.” Prince was required to take a national test and a new state test in order to update his credentials and continue performing the work he had done for a decade at the time. Unlike other types of lenders and mortgage brokers, Prince said he is unique because he has direct connections to major mortgage loan companies, such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Along with being competitive and confident in his ability to work with his clients, Prince takes great pleasure in the outcomes of helping people find homes that they can afford. “At the end of the day, we as individuals have to take personal responsibility for our finances,” he said. Prince is a loan officer with Ideal Lending Solutions, based in West Palm Beach. There he is focused on what he enjoys most, working directly with clients. But Prince also has
long-term experience training teams of brokers, lenders and agents. “That’s where I cultivated a lot of my business from — training and teaching agents how to structure their business and how to market their business,” Prince said. Over the past decade, Prince said the housing market has changed for the better. He said there will always be fluctuations that can cause downturns and upturns in the market as a whole, but he said that the way everything works today has made the overall climate a positive one to work in. “Today, with the new laws that are in place, which I’m a huge advocate of, is that you cannot get a loan unless you can prove your ability to repay that loan back,” Prince said. He is confident in today’s housing market. “It’s a very healthy market that we’re heading down,” Prince said. “It’s very healthy to see we’re experiencing tremendous growth right now. New Weight Management Center Opens At Wellington Regional Medical Center
The newly renovated center includes a community classroom, where support groups and informational sessions are held monthly, a fitness center and eight private consultation rooms. “Our programs are unique in that they are physician-directed and personalized to each person’s goals,” explained Dr. Emily Harrison, medical director of the Weight Management Center. “We start by learning the person’s story to understand the root cause of the weight gain, and then customize a program to help them be successful.” The customized weight-loss plans include four-week and 12-week programs, as well as programs for people who have had bariatric surgery. After an initial evaluation, followup appointments may include meeting with a registered dietician, a fitness instructor or a health psychologist. “Depending on the program chosen, we focus on things like stress manage-

Wellington National Golf Club recently added to its repertoire with the grand opening of the new Champions Bistro. Already a Wellington staple in terms of country club living with its manicured 18-hole golf course, an active member social calendar and plenty of amenities, the club further increased its appeal with the addition of the new full-service restaurant. Held in January, the grand opening was attended by more than 500 people, and the club is eager to continue to feed and entertain members and their guests. The opening comes after a successful year of growth and development for the club under owners Chip Smith, Andy Apple and Doug Marty. “We have envisioned Champions Bistro for quite some time, and I know I speak for all of us at the club that we are thrilled to see it in its completion,” Marty said. “The restaurant has been met with great success, and we are grateful for the warm reception by our members, their guests and all who attended the grand opening. I’m looking forward to welcoming even more people to Champions Bistro to experience what it has to offer.”
