Live Oaks, Palms LiveOaks,Palms And More AndMore At Big Blue T AtBigBlueTree Farm In reeFarmIn W

The Big Blue Tree Farm in Wellington offers wholesale prices to the public for its landscape trees and shrubs, and is currently offering a special price of $75 for live oak trees that are 10 to 18 feet tall.

Mike Haughey and his wife Mary took over the business on Flying Cow Road in southwestern Wellington five years ago from his father-in-law Dr. John McCarthy.

McCarthy, a retired ophthalmologist, is a member of the Wellington Tree Board, which advises the Wellington Village Council on maintaining Wellington’s tree canopy.

“My father-in-law originally bought this property over 35 years ago piece by piece,” Haughey said. “He bought 50 acres, then another 100 acres, then 20 acres, which we sold recently, but we’ve retained 150. He bought it way back when it was considered a snake farm.”

When Haughey and his wife took over, the farm was planted mostly with about 15,000 native Florida live oaks, he said. They are slowly broadening the available varieties. “That was the thinking back then, to be mainly a live oak farm,” he said. “As times changed, we had to diversify, and we have a lot of palms and a lot of native things, just more of a variety. We’re trying to clear some of these fields that we planted with these live oaks so we can plant other stuff.”

Live oaks are a deal now because the couple wants to make room for other varieties. “We’re selling all these live oaks,” he said, “and the nice thing is that people who lost mature trees in the hurricanes, they can get a mature tree at a fraction of what it would cost otherwise, and I probably still have 500 of them.

Other trees available include royal palms, pygmy date palms, dahoon hollies, gumbo limbos and green buttonwoods. “We’ve got about nine or ten varieties of the more popular palms,” Haughey said.

Haughey also has shrubs available including wax myrtles, silver buttonwoods and privets. “As time goes on we’re going to add more and more things so we’ll have more variety,” he said.

Haughey pointed to rows of native green buttonwood trees. “The advantage of planting native trees is that once they are established, they don’t need much maintenance,” he said. “They pretty much adapt to the environment. I think that’s what most cities are pushing for anyway, more native trees.”

If a client needs a landscaping consultant, Haughey said he has several he trusts to give good advice and install the trees at a reasonable rate. “I have a number of different landscapers who will actually come out and install the tree or deliver it,” he said. “I try to keep a good group of landscapers around that I can refer this stuff to; people I can count on to be able to go the house and advise people what would look good.”

Some people have cut back on tree planting due to the drought. That is not the way to go, Haughey said.

“Right now it seems that people are afraid to plant stuff because of the watering restrictions, but planting new landscaping is just as important to the environment as conserving water,” he said. “I’m sure the economy has something to do with people holding off, but if they can get it wholesale, then what better time to do it?”

Haughey noted that newly planted landscapes can be watered every day

except Friday for the first 30 days. For the subsequent 30 days they can be watered Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Hand-watering is allowed anytime for 10 minutes per day.

The Big Blue Tree Farm is on the west side of Flying Cow Road in Wellington, about a mile south of the Rustic Ranches neighborhood, and can be reached either via Southern Blvd. from the north or 50th Street from the south or east.

The farm has a web site at www.big bluetreefarm.com. Call (561) 793-4370 for more information.

The Shoe Authority: Fashion, Comfort And Hands-On Service

When Bob and Roz Miller opened a store in the Wellington Marketplace last November, they called it the Shoe Authority. They weren’t kidding with the name. Between them, the Millers have more than 80 years of experience in the shoe business. The couple moved to the western communities in 2003 after Bob Miller sold off a string of Pittsburg-area shoe stores his family owned and operated for 50 years.

Bob Miller’s goal wasn’t much different than many other successful northeastern businessmen: retire, move to South Florida and play golf every day.

It wasn’t long, however, before Miller grew tired of teeing it up on a daily basis. He returned to work part time in a Boynton Beach shoe store and after he grew even more restless, began to scout around for a location to open a store of his own. “We did a lot of demographic research and everything pointed to Wellington,” he said.

A stickler for details, Miller looked at 17 locations around the Wellington area before settling on the Wellington Marketplace location. And with an eclectic inventory that includes popular shoe brands such as MBT, Naot and Merrell, it hasn’t taken long for customers to find him.

For example, early Monday morning Miller fielded two calls — one from Palm Beach Gardens and one from Boynton

Beach — inquiring about MBT (Masai Barefoot Technology) shoes. At the same time, store manager Michelle Heller fitted a customer — an Indiana snowbird — with a pair of MBT shoes.

Fitting is the lifeblood of Miller’s business. “Our motto is ‘fashion comfort,’” he said. “Our approach is very handson.”

Miller explained how he measures each customer’s feet with a system called I-Step that provides a digital printout of each foot.

“It shows all the pressure points of the feet or any the deformities,” he said. “It shows your arch condition and recommends what kind of arch should be used. In some cases it helps us sell orthotics.”

Miller said he does some small orthotic work in house, but work such as custom arches is performed by orthotic specialist Peter’s Shoes in Greenacres, a business Miller said he trusts.

“It’s a good operation, I’m very happy with it,” Miller said. “I don’t tolerate what I call halfway measures when it comes to taking care of somebody’s feet. We’re very particular. We don’t prescribe without a prescription. If we think someone has a problem we will send them to someone who we think is going to handle them properly.”

Miller said most Shoe Authority customers are looking for personal service, fit, comfort and fashion. “We’re not shoe droppers. We don’t drop a shoe on the floor and see it if fits,” he

said. “We sit down and measure your feet — each of them — and find out what your shoe size is. Does it feel good? Does it look nice? That all comes secondary. Some times we get a few who don’t like that and they walk out. But most of our business has been from people happy to find someone who can fit them with the footwear at a proper size and a proper width.”

The Shoe Authority is located in the Wellington Marketplace at 13857 Wellington Trace, Suite D-2 and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Health And Fitness Seminar Feb. 21 In Wellington

Six of Wellington’s leading health, fitness and personal care professionals will host the seminar “How to Make 2008 Your Best Year Ever” Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Wellington Community Center (12165 W. Forest Hill Blvd.). The community-awareness and fundraising event will benefit the Children’s Home Society of Florida.

“The purpose of this event is to kick off 2008 by teaching Wellington residents a proven strategy for achieving their New Year’s resolutions of health and fitness, and raising money for a great charity for which I have a personal affinity,” explained Fit Studio owner and world-class runner Sonja Friend-Uhl, a certified fitness and nutrition pro-

fessional with over 10 years experience in South Florida.

“Most people set health and fitness goals for the New Year, and start off with full momentum, but burn out quickly and never reach their goals. At this seminar, we will reveal how anyone with the desire can make 2008 the year their weight-loss and fitness goals are finally achieved,” Friend-Uhl said. “The lineup of health, fitness and personal-care experts I’ve assembled is formidable. We’re all very confident we can have a real impact on the health of our community — and raise money for a worthy cause at the same time. We intentionally chose the name of the event because of its implicit promise.

Wellington residents have supported our businesses over the years, and now we want to give back by showing them how to really make 2008 their best year yet.”

Dr. Farokh Jiveh of Smiles by Jiveh, Dr. Michael Sinclair of Epilution Med Spa, Victor Connor of the Connor Financial Group, Dr. Randy Laurich of the Wellness Experience and Dr. Melissa Carlson of the Ob/Gyn Specialists of the Palm Beaches will be in attendance to share tips and information on their programs for 2008.

The seminar is for ages 15 and up. The cost is a $10 donation to the Children’s Home Society. For information, visit www. wellingtonchallenge2008.com.

Steve Hildebrandt: Get A Complete Home Windstorm Inspection

Hildebrandt Home Inspections owner

Steve Hildebrandt strongly recommends homeowners in the western communities get a windstorm inspection from a certified home inspector, as it will not only improve safety but will also likely pay off in insurance savings.

“This is as close to a sure bet as you can have,” he said. “You pay a fee set by the insurance companies, $150, and if your home is prepared to face a hurricane, you should immediately get far more back from your insurance company than you paid for the inspection.”

Hildebrandt, who is also a state-certified building contractor, said windstorm inspection is worthwhile even for homes that are older or have problems. “A lot of people in older houses had hurricane straps in for their roofs and shutters even before they were required by law,” he said. “And if something is wrong, you would rather have Steve Hildebrandt tell you about it during an inspection rather than have Hurricane Steve damage your home in a storm. Quite often, I can make suggestions that will add to your home’s protection.”

Although Hildebrandt also does complete real estate inspections, he is doing a lot of windstorm inspections now. “Florida required insurers to give discounts to homeowners,” he said. “The companies decided it would be better to provide much lower rates for homes that were really protected against storms than to give a smaller one to everyone. As a result, they ask homeowners for proof that they are hurricane-resistant. Every company gives a discount, although the rates are different for each company.”

Hildebrandt said most homeowners save money through the inspection. “I told a neighbor about it and he had an

inspection done,” Hildebrandt recalled. “A few weeks later he came over and thanked me because he had gotten a check for $2,600. Not everyone will save that much money because people pay different rates; homes are in different conditions and have different values. But almost everyone comes out way ahead.”

Hildebrandt, a Wellington resident, is also fully qualified to do complete real estate inspections. “Most people are not aware that to be certified building contractor you have to pass 18 hours of tests,” he said. “You have to know what should be done when building a house.”

Hildebrandt said his background is ideal for working as a home inspector. “I was a general contractor for many years in New Jersey and then was a project manager for a major renovation at a high-rise in Palm Beach,” he said. “After that, I worked in the Project Management Division at Centex, dealing primarily with customer service.”

For a real estate home inspection, getting an independent and knowledgeable inspector is important, Hildebrandt said. “You need to have someone who can and will spot problems,” he said. “I check the electrical system, from the panel to each socket. I have to check the entire plumbing system, turning on every faucet, checking overflow valves, and checking for water damage if there are leaks or if damage was done in the past. I go into the attic to check for damage that the current owner may not even know about.”

The thorough approach also applies to customer service, Hildebrandt said. “When I do an inspection, I take a lot of time and answer any questions from a homeowner,” he said. “Even when people call me on the phone to get quotes, I am always ready to talk a

Hildebrandt recommends prospective buyers be on hand for at least part of the inspection, which can last two to three hours.

“You want to take a look at any problems firsthand to decide whether or not any issues are serious enough to warrant a change of mind,” he said. “If you are there, I can point out anything wrong. Looking at stain damage

Palms West Hospital Provides Gifts For Adopted Families

Palms West Hospital donated hundreds of gifts last holiday season to four families through the organization Adopt-a-Family. Adopt-a-Family is dedicated to restoring families in crisis to stability and self-sufficiency by providing all-encompassing services to families and their children.

Employees of Palms West Hospital donated everything from housewares to bicycles, clothes and most especially toys. Palms West Hospital Echo Coordinator Judith Buckland organized the gift drive with the help of her coworkers Nancy Adams, Janice Calcia, Norma Gorman and Neil Winthrop. These employees spent several hours shopping, wrapping and sorting gifts which enabled Palms West Hospital to successfully answer the Christmas wishes of the three families.

The Imaging Services Department decided to adopt an additional family of their own. Ironically, the day the department planned to have the family

come in for the presentation of their gifts, the father was a patient at Palms West Hospital. His day was brightened as he was brought from his room to join his family for a special lunch and gift presentation. The hospital would like to thank Imaging Department employees Dottie Anderson, Ada Valentine, Nancy Peterson and Damian McFarlane who coordinated the gifts donated to the family.

“Thanks to the generosity of our employees and the commitment of our internal organizers, these families will have a holiday season filled with gifts and good wishes,” Palms West Hospital CEO Bland Eng said.

Palm Tran generously donated the use of one of their small passenger buses to transport all the gifts to the Adopt-a-Family location.

Palms West Hospital is located at 13001 Southern Blvd. in Loxahatchee Groves. For more information, visit www.palmswesthospital.com.

Keller Williams Holds Random Acts Of Kindness Week Feb. 11-17

Diane Harbison and Nancy Jennings of Keller Williams Realty Wellington have announced that their office will hold “Random Acts of Kindness Week” Feb. 11-17.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation inspires people to practice kindness and to “pass it on” to others. The foundation provides free educational and community ideas, guidance and other resources to kindness participants through its web site at www.actsof kindness.org.

“The agents in our Wellington office epitomize the ‘best of the best’ in the real estate business today,” Harbison and Jennings said. “Their desire to help others and to lead by example will make a tremendous difference in our community.”

During Random Acts of Kindness Week, Keller Williams agents are encouraged to seek ways to help and serve in the community. The acts might be as simple as holding a door open at a local restaurant, or stopping to pick up a piece

of trash on the sidewalk. As people tap into their own generous human spirit and share kindness with one another, they discover for themselves the power of kindness to effect positive change. When kindness is expressed, healthy relationships are created, community connections are nourished, and people are inspired to pass kindness on.

Agents will be held accountable for logging in their random acts of kindness during this week, and will report back to Broker/Team Leader Nancy Jennings

with their list of gestures.

“Our agents are always professional and respectful, so I am sure that the lists at the end of the week will be quite long,” Jennings predicted.

Harbison is Keller Williams Realty Wellington’s operating principal; Jennings is broker and team leader.

Sport Horse Auction At The Ridge Farm

The fifth annual Intercontinental Sport Horse Auction recently announced that limited spaces remain for selected consignment horses for inclusion in this year’s sale, which will be held on Feb. 22 at the Ridge Farm in Wellington.

The auction is modeled after traditional European sales. In addition, the horses have complete x-rays taken no more than three months before the auction and a complete set of flexion tests no more than 10 days before the auction. Held during the height of the winter show season, the sale is like none other in the United States. Garson, an Olympic veteran, travels to Eu-

rope each year and handpicks each horse that will be offered at the auction.

“We turn down hundreds of horses for the auction and try to bring in a select few from hunters, jumpers, dressage horses, maybe a few ponies, depending on the quality that I can find,” Garson said. “I like to bring in some new faces, so to speak. I like to bring in some young prospects and then some horses that are experienced — suitable for amateurs or juniors.

Some of the horses that we bring in have shown through the Grand Prix level, and then some are just young prospects that are just starting — and then every-

thing in between.”

Interested parties can contact the Ridge Farm at (732) 6814379 to discuss options for a horse to be included in the sale. Buyers will be able to view the final group of horses online at www.interconsporthorse. com, which will have breeding details, individual specifications and photos. There will be video clips available of each horse at least one week before the auction. The Intercontinental Sport Horse Auction is open to the public. However, it is suggested that attendees register in advance. For more information, visit www.interconsporthorse. com.
