PBIEC Welcomes Back Top-Level Competition For 2020 Winter Equestrian Festival

Jumping Action

World-class equestrian sport is back at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington for the 12week Winter Equestrian Festival, which opened on Jan. 8 and continues until March 29.

With more than 70 divisions of hunter-jumper competition featuring everything from short-stirrup up to Olympiclevel show jumping,WEF is the premier winter equestrian destination for many of the world’s top horses and riders.

Managed by Equestrian Sport Productions,WEF is the largest and longestrunning equestrian festival in the world, with more than 7,000 horses competing throughout the winter circuit and welcoming competitors of all ages to the venue to enjoy the ideal South Florida winter weather.

The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center has long been recognized as one of the finest equestrian venues in the world. Each winter, riders from 50 countries and all 50 states travel to Wellington to compete at PBIEC.The venue covers 500 acres with 80 acres of competition rings alone.

In November, the venue completed the installation of a newly engineered riding surface in the International Arena and warm-up ring after assembling a team of five world-class equestrian footing experts. The team consisted of Premier Equestrian Inc., Bart Poels of Poels Equestrian, Bill Hawe of iEquiTek, FEI

footing expert Lars Roepstroff and Travis Gould of JTWG Inc. The new arena now boasts an innovative drainage system, the OTTO Sport Base Mat system, and a state-of-the-art footing surface that’s both safer and more durable for horses and riders.

“Horse welfare remains the top priority during our 12-week circuit,” ESP President Michael Stone said. “The popularity of the venue gave rise to accelerated wear and tear over the last few years.

Based on our review and feedback from the riders, we were in agreement that the surface needed total replacement to meet the caliber of competition that we are hosting. In addition, with the World Cup Finals taking place in the U.S. next April, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics running in August, we expect the world’s best riders to bring their top-level horses to WEF this season to prepare and organize their international teams.”

The four CSI 5* Grand Prix classes, the highest level of international show jumping in the sport, will take place on Feb. 8 (WEF 5), Feb. 22 (WEF 7), March 7 (WEF 9) and March 28 (WEF 12) in the International Arena.These competitions attract top horse-and-rider combinations and include four FEI World Ranking classes during each week. The final CSI 5* competition of the circuit (WEF 12) hosts the $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*, the most prestigious international class of the 2020 season. This

year, the $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5* will once again take place on the final Saturday of the season.

The $75,000 Battle of the Sexes, presented by Wellington Regional Medical Center, kicked off the Saturday Night Lights series on Saturday, Jan. 11, pitting males against females in a battle to see which gender reigns supreme. Always a crowd favorite, spectators were encouraged to support their favorite team by wearing either blue or pink outfits.

WEF welcomes Equinimity LLC as a third-year title sponsor of the popular WEF Challenge Cup classes, Thursday’s weekly highlight competition.

The Equinimity WEF Challenge classes began Thursday, Jan. 8 and will continue through Thursday, March 26, with distributed prize money ranging from $35,000 up to $132,000.

The CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Championship Jumper Classics will once again take place throughout the circuit at both PBIEC’s main grounds and the Derby Field at Equestrian Village, culminating with a final class on Saturday, March 21 with the $132,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Championship Classic Final, which takes place under the lights in the International Arena and offers a substantial prize for the overall series winner.

— Michael Stone the next generation of talent for five editions of competition. Hosted at both the main grounds of PBIEC and at Equestrian Village, the Hermès Under 25 Grand Prix Series is sure to impress, once again featuring many of the world’s best riders under the age of 25.

The Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments, a major philanthropic event hosted annually at PBIEC, is set for the evening of Saturday, Feb. 1. Over the last 10 years, the GCC has raised in excess of $13.5 million for more than 250 well-deserving Palm Beach County charities.

The GCC is a pro-am style relay race between teams of riders in costume.

This year’s theme is “Broadway Musicals,” and teams will have the opportunity to represent plays and musicals, along with their traditional customs in costumes and decorations.The winning team will claim more than $150,000 for their paired charity, while all participating charities receive at least $15,000.

The $100,000 USHJA/WCHR Peter Wetherill Hunter Spectacular during Week 6 of WEF draws eyes to an evening of stunning hunter displays. Riders competing for one of the discipline’s yearly top honors will take to the International Arena for an evening of traditional and classic hunter competition. This week also features a varying group of hunter divisions competing in the International Arena throughout the week, while FEI CSI 3* jumper classes will take place at PBIEC’s Equestrian Village location.

A continual crowd favorite, the $150,000 Nations Cup CSIO 4*, featuring a team-format competition between riders representing their home countries, will be part of Saturday Night Lights in 2020 and hosted on Saturday, Feb. 29, during Week 8 of WEF. Last year, the United States team claimed the gold medal after a thrilling jumpoff with team members Wilton Porter, Beezie Madden,Adrienne Sternlicht and McLain Ward.This year, the U.S. will look to defend its title. Spectators are encouraged to represent their favorite team and country, as prizes are given to the “most spirited spectators” throughout the evening — so grab your flags and bring the whole family.

WEF concludes on Sunday, March 29, with the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on the Derby Field of Equestrian Village to officially close out

the 12 weeks of the season.Top hunter riders will set out on a beautiful course in an attempt to capture the final major prize of the winter circuit. Spectators are encouraged to enjoy the final day of WEF from the berm on the Derby Field or on the adjacent grassy knoll.

General admission is free at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center during the WEF circuit, which hosts competitions from Wednesday morning through Sunday afternoon. Numerous vendors and shops are open throughout the season, showcasing products and services that range from horse wear and tack, to art, jewelry, fine clothing and emerging technologies.

Community Partners The Great Charity Challenge, presented

by Fidelity Investments, will be returning to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center for the 11th year on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Founded in 2010 by Mark and Paige Bellissimo, the event has distributed $13.5 million to more than 240 Palm Beach County charities to date. The exciting event hinges on the generous support of the equestrian community and local business partners. Donations and sponsorships from local families, foundations, businesses, vendors, exhibitors and spectators, ranging from $50 to $50,000, are what make the event reach its fundraising goal of more than $1 million every year.

Over the last five years, the relay-style show jumping competition has brought team spirit to a new level by incorporating themes into each yearly celebration.With riders dressed up in costumes and horses adorned to match them, this year’s theme of “Broadway Musicals” will pay recognition to the wisdom commonly found in these plays.

A total of 69 Palm Beach Countybased organizations benefited from the 2019 GCC event. Visitor’s Guide The Winter Equestrian Festival, held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, is the world’s largest and longest-running horse show circuit, with an elite combination of competition, community, social activity and more. After Stellar 2019, Alex Granato Has Big Plans For 2020 With Top Mount Carlchen W

Remember the name Alex Granato. A rising star in the ultra-competitive U.S. show jumping realm, he is on the cusp of becoming a household name, joining the likes of superstars such as McLain Ward, Kent Farrington, Margie Engle and Laura Kraut.

Granato, who is originally from Salt Lake City but now calls Wellington home, is coming off an exceptional 2019 season and looking forward to raised expectations. He has worked his way up in the industry, dominating the Midwest circuit for many years before coming to Wellington. He has won more than 50 Grand Prix events during his career, but last year was one to remember.

“I feel like my 2019 season was surreal,” said Granato, a relative newcomer to the Winter Equestrian Festival circuit in Wellington. “I think it was a big year for me to learn about putting the proper attention on my horses and my program.And to also be looking forward and planning for new goals.”

Granato and his most prominent mount, Carlchen W, a naturally fast and quick horse, were consistently contending for top honors throughout 2019.

They won several major events, including a World Cup qualifier in Wellington last February and another World Cup qualifier in Columbus, Ohio in October.

They were also part of the silver medal-

winning U.S. Nations Cup team in Mexico in early May. Their steady, reliable record resulted in Granato’s selection to his first Pan American Games, held in Lima, Peru in early August, where the U.S. team earned the bronze medal.

One of his Pan Am teammates was four-time Olympian and two-time Olympic team gold medalist Beezie Madden.

“Alex does not necessarily remind me of anyone in particular, but I think he is a great representative of the American style,” said Madden, a fan favorite at WEF. “He is very comfortable working out of a forward gallop and being aggressive, making him very competitive.”

Jeff Gogul is a top hunter rider who has known Granato for many years.

“His talent is God-given,” Gogul said.

“I think he’s thoughtful and intuitive with his horses. He doesn’t rush horses along. He helps them meet their potential. He spent a lot of time with Carl, and they have had two incredible seasons.

He knows when to push and when to back off.”

With his spectacular 2019 season in the rearview mirror, Granato has formulated a specific blueprint for 2020 with Carlchen W. “My plan is to focus on a few important weeks and qualify for the 2020 FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas,” the wellington the magazine | february 2020

WEF 36-year-old Granato said. “I am also going to put focus toward some new horses that I’m excited about.”

The FEI World Cup Finals are April 15-19 in Las Vegas with a key qualifier in late January in Wellington and another in early March in Ocala. The top seven riders advance to the finals. Heading into the season, Granato and Carlchen W were in ninth place, just three points out of seventh.

Page Tredennick, who owns Carlchen W, remembers being aware of Granato when he was a junior, riding in Arizona and Colorado.

“I always admired his skill and drive even when he had tough horses,” Tredennick said.“I started working with him six years ago when my daughter was transitioning out of the horses and headed to grad school.That was when I purchased Carl, and he assumed the ride on my other Grand Prix horse Tanner.”

Granato runs the hunter-jumper barn Mad Season, based out of Wellington and Lexington, Kentucky, with professional rider Josh Dolan. It is named in honor of the horse Granato purchased during his last year as a junior competitor. They went on to win more than 20 Grand Prix events over the next decade.

Even on days when Granato isn’t showing, he stays busy, first by walking his dogs and then heading to the barn.

“I check in with everyone and get started on our plan for the day,” Granato said. “After riding and lessons, I’ll run a couple of errands and maybe grab some lunch.Then back to the barn for chores with the minis.”

On off days, Granato relaxes by spending time with friends either just cooking at home, going to movies or going to Drive Shack.

Granato stressed that his recent success isn’t just his.

“There is a long list of people who have supported and helped me along the way,” Granato said. “Just highlighting some... my family has always been behind the scenes encouraging me.The Tredennicks have trusted me to work with their horses and let me develop Carlchen to where he is now. And perhaps the most instrumental in helping me do what I’ve done has been Josh [Dolan]. He has always given it to me straight and helped me with the program and plan with the horses.”

In his spare time, Granato helps rescue and rehabilitate miniature horses for the Peeps Foundation, a nonprofit he and Dolan created.

“The Peeps Foundation has become a real group effort with Josh, myself, our staff and our clients all getting involved,” Granato said. “We do all the daily care, 90 percent of the feet trimming, we as-

sist Josh with all the glue extensions and corrective shoes, and we’re constantly working on new rescues to help.”

Madden recalls Granato as an exceptional teammate.

“He is a wonderful person with a great sense of humor and can be very entertaining,”Madden said.“He also has a great sense of compassion, as evidenced by his work with the Peeps Foundation.”

Granato and Carlchen W, an 11-yearold warmblood gelding, have swiftly moved up the ranks to the be among the best combinations in the sport.

“Alex is honest and straightforward,” Tredennick said. “He’s quiet and a hard worker.“He’s Type A around the horses and reliable. Overall, he is a really good person.”

Todd And Amanda Minikus Have A Partnership Focused On Horses And Family

Todd and Amanda Minikus have had an enduring love affair with horses — and each other. They first met at the prestigious National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City in the late 1990s, just a couple of equestrians at one of the biggest shows in the United States.

“Todd was trying to steal my pallet for my equipment to be taken up,” Amanda recalled. “Needless to say, he was unsuccessful.”

Several years later,Amanda ended up working for Todd. Fast forward a few more years and Todd was finally able to steal her heart. They were married on Jan. 6, 2008.

The 2020 season is Todd Minikus’ 40th as a professional rider and 35th competing in Grand Prix competitions — an amazing achievement in the world of show jumping. He has won more than 150 Grand Prix classes and represented the U.S. on numerous occasions, including medal-winning Nations Cup and Pan American Games teams.

Todd also won the Million Dollar Grand Prix in Saugerties, N.Y., en route to earning the prestigious Equestrian of the Year award in 2014. That same year, his horse Quality Girl earned the top ranking for Horse of the Year with the most cumulative points.

ments I have achieved so far,”Todd said of his lengthy career. “The more I do this, the more I realize I didn’t know anything about training horses and you still learn every day.”

“I love the sport. It’s the best sport in the world,” Todd said of bull riding.

“I just played around with it. I just love all fast sports. Maybe I’m an adrenaline junkie.”

At their 10-acre compound in a gated community near Wellington, Todd is in charge of riding and training, while Amanda is in charge of everything else.

When Todd is away at shows, Amanda takes over the riding and care of the horses at home. They moved into their four-bedroom home and 24-stall barn compound on Thanksgiving Day in 2010.

“It has been a partnership for more than 20 years, and at this point we have really found a balance between the two of us that makes it really work,”Amanda said.“As far as rules, no rules. Hard work and do it right.”

“My wife is always right,” Todd said.

“Well, we are still alive.”

Balancing career and family can sometimes be tricky, but together they make it work. Their secret? “I have no idea,” Todd said. “We take it one day at a time.”

Minikus, who turns 58 years old on June 11, is planning to be busy during the current season at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington.

that I am bringing along and hoping to get some top horses to add to my string,” said Todd, who also trains and coaches several other competitors at various levels.

“He’s one of the great American riders,” said Reyers, who trains with Todd six days a week. “He’s very visual. He’ll get off his horse and get on my horse to show me the right way.”

Even during training, Todd injects some fun into it.

“He has a very good sense of humor,” Reyers said. “And he’s a big family man.

Everything he does, he does for his kids.”

Todd and Amanda have two children — Colt, 11, and Langley, 8. They also have several dogs, including Rhodesian ridgebacks. Managing it all together just works out for them.

“I cannot say there is any kind of program to make it all work. It somehow just happens,” Amanda said. “Our son Colt plays tennis and golf and is an extreme Lego builder. Our daughter Langley rides and does gymnastics. Langley shows a lot of promise with her riding.

With so much going on at home with the horses and children, spare time is hard to come by.

“There is really not too much time for relaxing,” Todd said. “It is a 24-hour occupation. But if there are moments, hanging at our house would be one of them.”

Equestrian Sport Productions President Michael Stone, a former rider and coach at the highest levels of international horse sports, has been watching top competitors for many years.

“Todd is one of the world’s top riders and has been able to maintain that for a long time,” Stone said.“It is not a matter of luck that he has remained at the top for all these years. He is, without a doubt, one of nature’s gentlemen.”

Equestrian insurance executive Joe Norick has known Todd since the 1980s when they met while both were in Arizona.

“To me, there’s no better horseman,” said Norick, who also is impressed by Todd’s teaching ability and his sense of humor. “He’s an amazing teacher. He’s super nice and warm. He doesn’t yell; he’s not mean. He’s like, let’s fix it, let’s make the horse better, let’s make the rider better, let’s make the team better.”

The Winter Equestrian Festival is back in action at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Once again, riders have come to Wellington from all corners of the globe to compete at the longest horse show series in the world with more prize money than ever on the line. Horse and rider pairs will soar over fences, navigate complicated sequences and make hairpin turns — all to the delight of the crowd.

While WEF attracts the world’s top riders, it’s not all about jumping at its highest levels. WEF is home to riders of all ages and abilities, from Short Stirrup all the way up to Grand Prix. While junior and amateur riders aim to get crucial show experience, the world’s top riders have returned to Wellington with an eye on this year’s 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. As we do each year, Wellington The Magazine once again presents our annual Faces of WEF section, offering a glimpse at just a handful of the amazing riders competing this season at the Winter Equestrian Festival.

A native of Michigan, up-and-coming rider Jordan Allen took her first lesson at a local barn as a birthday present when she was 7 years old.Allen began taking one lesson a week with a trainer until she sustained an injury at age 8.After healing,Allen’s love for horses won out and she returned to riding, moving from ‘C’ rated shows to the ‘A’ circuit with her horse Avedon.Trainer Kim Carey recognized both Allen’s talent and desire to reach the highest levels of the sport, introducing her in 2015 to Ken and Emily Smith of Ashland Farms, where she is currently a working student. When not studying at the University of South Carolina, she trains at Ashland’s Lexington, Kentucky, base during the summer and calls Wellington home during the winter season. She has found success at WEF, finishing third in last year’s $100,000 WCHR Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular with the 7-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding Kind Of Blue.

Liza Towell Boyd is one of the country’s top hunter riders and trainers.As a junior, Boyd was named Overall World Champion Hunter Rider three times, was second at the Washington International Equitation Finals and won the Best Child Rider Award there four times, setting a record that remains untouched. After completing her junior career, she graduated from the College of Charleston and returned to the family business. Since then, Boyd has had an extremely successful career as both a trainer and rider.To date, she has won more than 25 USHJA international and national hunter derbies, and she rode Brunello to victory in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 USHJA International Hunter Derby Championships. Laura Chapot comes from one of the nation’s most prominent equestrian families. Daughter of famed Olympic equestrians Frank and Mary Chapot, she is based out of Chado Farms in New Jersey. Chapot has an extensive list of accomplishments and can often be found high on the Rolex/USEF Show Jumping Ranking List. She had a spectacular season last year at the Winter Equestrian Festival, particularly with mount Chandon Blue.The pair took six top-three finishes, including the $50,000 Puissance America Grand Prix CSI 2* on Sunday, March 31, to claim the final FEI Grand Prix victory of the 2019 circuit. It was the pair’s fourth win in the final five weeks of WEF. It didn’t take Chapot long to make her mark at this year’s festival, claiming the top two spots in the $6,000 Bainbridge 1.40m Speed Challenge aboard Thornhill Kate and Out of Ireland during the opening week of WEF.

Lorenzo de Luca started riding horses when he was 9 years old. He grew up in a little town called Lecce in the south of Italy, where he first started competing. When he was 11 years old, he had his first show jumping competition with a horse called Eponi Constelina.When de Luca was 18 years old, he started riding professionally. He worked for the Neil Jones trading stables in Belgium before joining the highly regarded Stephex Stables, also in Belgium, in 2015. Nowadays, de Luca is a regular on the Italian national team, where he has participated in Nations Cup events and at the World Equestrian Games. Back in Wellington for the 2020 season, de Luca can be seen competing in his Italian Air Force military uniform and hopes to represent his home country at the Olympic Games. wellington the magazine | february 2020 63

After a string of great performances in 2019, Swiss Olympian Martin Fuchs, 27, began 2020 by moving to the top of the Longines rankings for the first time in his career. Fuchs’ first major victory was team gold at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010, and he went on to make his senior Olympic debut in 2016 in Rio with his gray gelding Clooney 51. Fuchs has achieved podium finishes at the last three major championships, including individual silver at the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 in Tryon and helping the Swiss team to fourth, earning a team quota place at the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo. Fuchs finished as runner-up at the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Final in Gothenburg last April and was crowned European Champion together with Clooney 51 at the Longines FEI Jumping European Championships in Rotterdam in August.

HUNTER HOLLOWAY

Hunter Holloway is an accomplished rider and trainer with numerous major victories under her belt.

She was riding horses with her mother Brandie Holloway before she could walk. Holloway rode to win the coveted 2016 ASPCA Maclay Championship and the 2016 Washington International Equitation Championships after winning all three phases of the competition. Holloway also won the U25 Jumper Championship at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show the same year. She is one of the winningest young riders, earning respect in national and international competitions on both hunters and jumpers.

More recent victories include a CSI5* win in Spruce Meadows and numerous victories at WEF,Tryon and Omaha. Now 22 years old, she splits her time between Wellington and her hometown of Topeka, Kansas, where she is deeply involved in her family’s business.

Lillie Keenan rose to prominence as one of the country’s top junior riders, who swept the championships in the 2007 and 2008 USEF Pony Finals.At age 13, she won the 2010 Washington International Horse Show Equitation Finals.The next year, Keenan took home the $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals, defeating some of the sport’s top professionals. Now 23, she has continued her winning ways. In 2018, Keenan was named to the Short List for the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon before heading to Europe to compete in the Global Champions Tour. DARRAGH KENNY

As the son of two trainers, Darragh Kenny, 32, began competing at the age of 10 in his homeland of Ireland.

Kenny’s career quickly flourished as he competed in his first Grand Prix at the age of 14 and was invited to compete at the Dublin Horse Show. He soon began working with North Run Farm under the tutelage of Missy Clark and John Brennan.With the help of Clark, Kenny was able to ride on Obelix, a horse that guided him to the top level of the sport with key wins starting in 2009. He had a show-stopping European tour in 2019. With Balou du Reventon, owned by Ann Thompson, he earned two prestigious 5* Grand Prix wins over the summer and also produced two clear rounds in the 2019 Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final in Barcelona to earn team gold and the coveted final Olympic qualification slot for the Irish show jumping team.When not in the saddle, he operates Oakland Stables with American show jumper Hardin Towell.

Born in Chicago, Nayel Nassar rides for Egypt, his parents’ homeland. He first tried equestrian sport at age 5 and began jumping at age 10. Nassar qualified for the FEI World Cup Finals in 2013, 2014 and 2017, and the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2014. More recently, he competed at the Longines FEI World Cup Finals in Paris aboard Lordan, and regularly competes on the international Grand Prix circuit. He is a regular on the Longines Global Champions Tour. Now 29, Nassar graduated from Stanford with a degree in economics in 2013 and is fluent in Arabic, French and English. Kristen Vanderveen runs Bull Run Jumpers, a training and sales stable in Wellington. Now 31, she has been managing the stables since age 18. As a rider, she jumped to the top of the rankings in 2016, and followed that up with an amazing year in 2017, when Vanderveen and her 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili, better known as Frosty, become one of the winningest pairs at the Tryon International Equestrian Center, taking home six blue ribbons in FEI competition. Vanderveen and Frosty later topped the $50,000 1.50m FEI Las Vegas National Welcome Jumper Speed Classic. Darragh Kenny Back In Wellington After A Show-Stopping European Tour

Twelve consecutive weeks spent in the same community may not seem very permanent to some, but for Ireland’s highest-ranked show jumping athlete Darragh Kenny, it’s just about the closest thing he has to home.

The time Kenny spends competing in Wellington at the Winter Equestrian Festival, the Palm Beach Masters series and the Wellington Turf Tour could be considered the calm before the storm that is his peripatetic lifestyle as a professional athlete.

Following the 2019 WEF circuit, Kenny spent the remainder of his year trav-

eling to a new city nearly every single weekend while climbing his way up the world rankings. Kenny highlighted his most successful year to date by accomplishing his personal milestone of breaking into the world’s top 10 in October and concluded the year as the No. 8-ranked athlete on the Longines FEI world ranking list.

In 2019, Kenny amassed an astounding résumé of top results across the globe. With Balou du Reventon, owned

by Ann Thompson, he earned two prestigious 5* Grand Prix wins in the summer, which include the LGCT Grand

Prix of Shanghai and the €500,000 Rolex Grand Prix in Knokke Hippique.

The pair also produced two clear rounds in the 2019 Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final in Barcelona to earn team gold and the coveted final Olympic qualification slot for the Irish show jumping team in October, before going on to finish in second place in the LGCT Super Grand Prix at the Prague Playoffs in November.

While 2019 was a monumental year for Kenny, 2020 holds a lot on the horizon for the 32-year-old Irish show jumper as he kicks off his competition year in Wellington with sights set on his first Olympic Games in Tokyo in August. Kenny will use the Florida winter circuit to prepare, which has made up a major portion of his competition schedule for the past 10 years, lead-

ing him to purchase a home and add a base in Wellington for his international business of Oakland Stables, which he owns and operates with American show jumper Hardin Towell. The Wellington location gives their global operation three bases, with additional locations in Thermal, Calif., and Meijel, Netherlands.

“I had a very busy year in 2019 as I traveled to compete every weekend, but it was rewarding to achieve one of my own goals, which was to be ranked in the top 10 in the world. I couldn’t have done any of this without Hardin’s support in managing our business in America,” Kenny said. “It is always nice to come back to Florida in the winter because it feels a good bit like home. It also gives Hardin and I a chance to work on organizing the business at the start of each year.”

sales of high-performance horses, along with an elite training program for students of all levels. Its continued growth keeps Kenny especially busy during his stint in Wellington, as he spends his time training his students in addition to

managing the business, while also competing an extensive string of promising horses. “[WEF] is really good because it has so many different rings, and the horses can show so many weeks.You can really

get to know the horses better,” Kenny explained.“I am able to teach, train and ride at all levels in one place.”

Kenny’s current string boasts a diverse group that ranges from up-andcoming young horses to experienced CSI5* mounts. Many of his Oakland Stables-owned young horses stay in Europe until they are ready to campaign as sale horses in Florida.The team is showcasing four new 8-year-olds this circuit with hopes of producing them along to sell while continuing to compete with Kenny.

For now, it’s a welcomed change for Kenny as he spends his time in Wellington and takes the opportunity to stay in one place for the full three months of the circuit.

Wellington Moms On A Mission For Families With Chronically Ill Children

When Jen Sherry and Kristina Bostwick met 11 years ago through the Mom’s Club of Wellington, they realized immediately that they were destined to become friends.

Both came to Wellington from big cities — Sherry from Baltimore and Bostwick from Chicago.They each have four children of similar ages, and both know what it’s like to be the mother of a child with serious medical needs.

Their bond deepened through their children’s illnesses, comparing notes on doctors and treatments and being each other’s source of strength. Sherry’s daughter has epilepsy, which is under control thanks to her current medications, and Bostwick’s son is a healthy high school senior after having open heart surgery as a young child.

Their shared experiences made them realize how important it is to have a network of other parents who can relate to having critically ill children.

“That’s what gets you through — other families to talk to who are dealing with the same challenges,” Sherry said.

Their desire to help others made them the perfect volunteers to help launch the Casey Cares Foundation in South Florida and serve as Champion of Children honorees for its inaugural “An Evening with Casey Cares” event on Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Breakers West Country Club.

periences for families with a child who is fighting a life-threatening disease that requires frequent hospitalizations.

For some, the family events may be the only reprieve from hospital stays and doctors’ visits. For others, they may be one of the last events they will attend with all family members present.

When Baynes looked to Florida to expand, she called the one friend she knew would make it happen — Sherry.

And she called the one friend she knew would be right there at her side — Bostwick.

“When Casey asked if I could help, my first though was ‘Yes!’ My second

thought was Kristina would be a perfect partner,” Sherry said.

It was not only Bostwick’s experience as a mother, it was also her background as a neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric nurse and the can-do attitude she had as PTA president at Panther Run Elementary School. Sherry knew that her friend would understand how meaningful Casey Cares would be to Wellington and the entire South Florida community.

“It was very special that Casey recognized the most important thing is the family unit,” Bostwick said. “If you can provide a little stress relief and respite, wellington the magazine | february 2020

it is a boost to the entire family’s mental health.”

While it has been only been a few months since Casey Cares launched in South Florida, Sherry and Bostwick have already rallied sponsors, donors and sports teams to contribute to the special programming that is designed to keep families’ spirits high and create lasting memories.

Their first big outing brought together two boys who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families to attend a Miami Dolphins game.While the boys didn’t know each other — one is from West Palm Beach and the other is from Miami — having their families share the experience is part of the magic of Casey Cares. “We’re making connections for families to share a special moment and create a lasting bond,” Sherry said.

Other outings in the works are an afternoon at the zoo, pizza and movie nights, and a spa day just for moms who need self-care.

For children who are hospital-bound, Casey Cares found a special way to bring joy — brand new pajamas.The program is called “Kami’s Jammies” in memory of a young Casey Cares patient who loved to receive new pajamas when she was in the hospital.

Sherry and Bostwick have created partnerships with a number of organizations to hold pajama drives, including Chick-fil-A and the South Florida Sci-

ence Center & Aquarium, which made Casey Cares a beneficiary of its “Noon Year’s Eve” celebration on Tuesday, Dec. 31, asking families to bring a donation of new pajamas.The Children’s Hospital at Palms West is one of the designated hospitals that will receive the pajamas to share with patients.

An Evening with Casey Cares will be the group’s biggest Florida event yet. As the evening’s honorees, Sherry and Bostwick are looking forward to welcoming hundreds of supporters who will enjoy a seated dinner, an open bar, live music from the Bay Kings Band, a silent auction filled with unique items and more.

“One of the things Jen and I love about Wellington is how charitable our community is,” Bostwick said. “I’m happy to see my kids grow up here and be surrounded by others who give back.

We’re hoping to have that same spirit at the event where people can see a kid with a big, happy smile and know that it was because of their generosity.”

An Evening with Casey Cares will take place Saturday, Feb. 29 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the Breakers West Country Club. Tickets are $150 per person, and tables of 10 are available.

For more than 20 years, Mike Graves has been on a mission to change the way people look at their health.

“Imagine a world where physical health and vitality is the rule rather than the exception,” Graves said. “That’s a pretty exciting world.”

But he realizes that world can only exist by properly educating people about their health. While Graves feels as if he’s making progress, he admits that he has a long way to go before reaching his goal.

Graves’ mission began in 1998 when

he started Gold Coast Physical Therapy Associates. Over time, his business interests in the physical therapy profession have changed.

Currently, he is one of the original shareholders, leaders and entrepreneurs behind Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers, a national franchise with 450 locations in 46 states, including 10 locations in Palm Beach County.

Graves and his partner Bruce White remain the sole owners in Palm Beach County and are hard at work innovating and creating prevention-oriented servic-

es for patients, with a particular focus on senior citizens.

Graves and White said their company’s mission is “to prevent needless suffering and do all in their power to help seniors flourish.”

“We do this by educating our therapists through proprietary training programs, educating our clients and leveraging new patient treatment technologies in our centers,” Graves explained.

started while he was recovering from an injury to his shoulder blade back in 1994.

Since its founding in 2013, Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers has grown and expanded. Clients range in age from 5 to 105, but 60 percent of the patients are at least 60 years old. Beyond the condition they are receiving physical therapy for, the vast majority of his clients suffer from medical and health issues that Graves refers to as “diseases of affluence.” Fortunately, that scenario can change.

“Depending on the study you read, between 75 percent and 98 percent of diseases of affluence are preventable,” Graves said.

He explained that diseases of affluence are, in large part, the result of conscious decision-making. Two of the more common ones are obesity and diabetes, which are preventable with lifestyle decisions and are often tied to poor dietary choices and physical inactivity.

The physical inactivity issue is a big one, as more than 80 million U.S. residents are classified as physically inactive, according to the Physical Activity Council.

Improving those unhealthy statistics requires equipping patients with the Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers is home to the latest equipment designed to improve patient balance.

knowledge to make their own lifestyle changes. “Getting weaker is not a byproduct of aging,” White said. “Instead, it’s a consequence of not moving. Exercising in life is like putting money away in the bank for the future.”

“We can’t mandate behavior change,” Graves added. “Instead, we must educate and provide customized, evidenced-based programs that address our clients’ specific needs. When people are armed with knowledge, and have access to trusted resources, they can make the right decisions.”

One of the company’s newest product offerings is a medically based fitness program for older patients called Fyzfit.

The Fyzfit programs are currently available at the company’s locations in Boynton Beach and western Lake Worth.

“The Fyzfit program will help anybody do the basic movements in life, such as safely getting around the house, putting food away in the cabinets and picking up something from the floor,” White said.

Graves noted that one of the other big issues that seniors have to cope with is avoiding falling down. Even a fall which does not result in an injury can be costly.

“When all is said and done, the costs of a non-injury fall can average in excess of $20,000,” Graves said.

Sadly, too many falls do result in injury, which can eventually lead to an untimely death.

“When we prevent a fall, we save a life,” Graves said. “We can prevent that fall. At the very least, we can prevent a whole lot of suffering and costly medical intervention.”

At Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers, Graves said each facility has technology designed to counter falling. It’s a specialized vestibular system technology that specifically targets a patient’s balance system, which is tied to the inner ear.

“We have technology that can improve your vestibular system and deal

with dizziness,” Graves said. “We can treat people with technology and educate them about what they can do to prevent falls. We have the most advanced technology available.”

The company’s leadership is also focused on re-educating the physical therapy profession. According to Graves, too many physical therapists traditionally focus solely on episodic care, treating the client’s body part rather than seeing them as the complete individual that they are. Physical therapists can and must do so much more, he said. By looking at clients in their entirety and engaging them on those issues, lives can be changed and suffering can be prevented.

Graves said that roughly 85 percent of his company’s current clients are walking in the door seeking help to recover from an injury. Currently, only some of those patients are getting fall prevention and balance care assistance. But the percentages are changing in favor of more care designed to prevent future problems.

The joint approach by Graves and White confirms the validity of the ageold cliché, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care.”

“We have a sick care system in the U.S., not a healthcare system,” Graves said. “We’d like to see our physical therapy education system change, but change takes time. This is a cause worth fighting for.”

White said that his goal is to change the attitudes around aging in the United States.

“Successful aging in place does not just have to be about building access ramps and grab bars,” White said. “It’s about taking control of your physical health to live the longest possible quality-filled life.”

“I had been coming here since I was a youngster and fell in love with the area,” Fear recalled. “Fifteen years ago, I moved down and began to indulge my hobby of watch collecting by hanging around Provident Jewelry in Jupiter.”

He was drawn to Wellington due to its equestrian amenities.

“I fell in love with Wellington and became a fixture at polo every Sunday, and further fell in love with the jewelry and high-end watch business. That’s because it’s such a positive, happy business,” Fear said. “The clients are happy, the people in the business are happy.

Jewelry is part of the positive moments in people’s lives.”

Twelve years ago, Fear began learning the ins and outs of the business. “I came into Provident Jewelry in Jupiter as a vice president of sales,” he explained.

After doing an exceptional job in that role, he was offered the opportunity to buy into the company as a partner.

“We are estate jewelers, so we buy and sell the same things to the same people, so we have to play our cards face-up. Our margins are much thinner.

We often sell the same jewelry as competitors for 40 to 50 percent of their prices,” Fear said.

As the company often takes back things that they have sold before for upgrades, estates or for whatever reason people might want to sell them, the markup is minimal compared to other firms.

“At the same time, we provide the ultra-high-end experience that goes with the purchase of such one-of-a-kind pieces of estate jewelry and the finest wrist watches in the world from some of the most unique boutique brands and inde-

pendent watchmakers,” Fear said. “We feature luxurious surroundings, with a full bar and a wine room.”

The multi-million dollars invested in the new Wellington location provides a venue expected by high-end jewelry customers. The store even hosts events that showcase its elaborate setting.

Wellington Keeps A Full Schedule Of Special Events For Residents To Enjoy

Wellington is not a community accustomed to idleness, and many events are organized and led by the village itself.According to Assistant Parks & Recreation Director Michelle Garvey, the community is currently at its peak in terms of things to do and places to go — and you won’t want to miss a thing.

Garvey has worked for the Village of Wellington for 15 years and handles all village-run special events. One such event that is currently occupying her time is the Wellington Classic Brew Fest, one of the few age-limited festivals that Wellington stages each year.

uled to take place Saturday, Feb. 8 on the Great Lawn at Wellington’s Town Center area near the Wellington Community Center. Craft beer lovers can choose their taste of brews from 40 different breweries.

“The idea for this was actually generated by our assistant village manager.

He’s always looking for new and innovative ideas, and this is his baby,” Garvey said. “I think it’s a great addition to our listing of events. It’s something that sets us apart.”

Garvey is expecting 1,500 people to attend the Wellington Classic Brew Fest and encourages them to buy tickets early, as last year, the event was sold out at 1,200 tickets. General admission is $45 prior to the event and $50 at the gate.

Brew tasters are also invited to enjoy limited and specialized samples, hors d’oeuvres and even massages with the purchase of a VIP ticket, guaranteeing early, exclusive admission at 2 p.m. General admission begins at 3 p.m.VIP tickets are $65 in advance and $70 at the gate.

Visitors looking to attend the event but not consume alcohol can buy a $10 ticket, excluding them from drinking but guaranteeing unlimited soda, water and a commemorative pint glass. While this form of admission is dubbed the “Designated Driver Ticket,” all eventgoers are encouraged to drink responsibly.

“During the event, to slow people down and make sure no one’s over-con-

suming, there are tasting glasses, which are smaller than a pint glass — and the brewers can only fill up to a certain line — so they really just get a taste of the beers,” Garvey said.“And we also encourage them to have a taste of this and then move on to the next brewer, so they can sample their special brews.”

Another event coming up is Marchtoberfest, set for March 6 and 7, also on the Great Lawn. Marchtoberfest is family friendly, and admission is free.

Partnering with the American German Club, the village welcomes visitors to watch German dance and band performances, as well as enjoy traditional German food. Grammy-nominated accordion musician Alex Meixner is also scheduled to perform.

“They can sit down and enjoy a bratwurst,” Garvey said.“The kids can play in the bounce houses or play lawn games and just enjoy the beauty of our little piece of paradise here in Wellington.”

Unlike the tradition of holding these types of gatherings in October, Garvey said this event landed in March after they were contacted by Hofbrau, the event’s official beer sponsor.

“Marchtoberfest came about where everything kind of fell together,” Garvey said. “We had the Hofbrau representative contacting us, and we were able to say, ‘OK, we’re going to make it a German theme.’Then we got together with the American German Club, and it all just fell into place.”

Wellington organizes a full slate of community events, such as the popular Father/Daughter Dance and Murder Mystery Dinner Theater.

Only a couple weeks later, Wellington will play host to the popular Bacon & Bourbon Fest, a family-friendly event complete with vendors and bourbon pairings. Wellington was actually featured on the Cooking Channel’s “Carnival Eats� for hosting this unique event.

While this is an event for all ages,

guests over 21 years old are invited to participate in pairing events inside the Wellington Community Center where experts teach them which type of bourbon pairs well with which food.

According to Garvey, Bacon & Bourbon Fest debuted in Delray Beach, but event organizers reached out to Welling-

ton and later moved the event here.

The event, set for March 21-22, will be held at the Wellington Amphitheater and the Wellington Community Center, and while it is free to the public, multiple VIP packages are available for sale.

A career based around horses is often a lifelong endeavor. For Wellington real estate agent Martha Jolicoeur, her time in the saddle led her to her true calling.

An accomplished rider training under the tutelage of Olympians, Jolicoeur made a big change that led her to call Wellington home — and to help others do the same.

Jolicoeur grew up in Westport, Connecticut, located in the heart of northeastern horse country. For her, riding felt like a natural step, and it was one that rewarded her from the moment she climbed onto the back of a horse as a child.

Unlike most Olympic sports, men and woman compete as equals in equestrian events, and the sport also involves another living, breathing being. Jolicoeur experienced the many highs while competing, but horses also helped her discover another passion. While living and competing in the Middleburg, Virginia, area, it was from the back of a horse that Jolicoeur was inspired to take her professional career in another direction.

“I was riding my horse along a hill and thought to myself that I needed to find a different path to secure a future for my family,’” said Jolicoeur, whose daughter, Isabel, is an associate attorney at Atkinson P.A. in Miami. “I got off the horse and decided to focus on real estate full time. So, I moved to Florida.”

Mr. Universe Matthew Otero Develops Personalized Training Programs For Clients

Matthew Otero’s life is all about helping year-round residents and visiting equestrians to accomplish their fitness goals and athletic aspirations. Through continuing education to address unique physiological needs, personalized nutrition and specific strength-training programs, he works with each client in developing universal principles.

Otero earned his 2019 drug-free Mr. Universe Bodybuilding title using his four valuable principles of success.

“I use intensity, consistency, motivation and experience while upholding the highest level of integrity,” said Otero, an Ohio native who has lived with his wife Liz in the Wellington area for the last dozen years. “We are both professional fitness trainers, as well as parents of two young children. We run the Mighty Oaks Equestrian Farm boarding and training facility in Loxahatchee Groves, as well as Results Personal Training where we train many equestrian athletes and other fitness and strengthrelated modalities.

Otero lives a high-quality, healthy lifestyle and was ready, at the age of 40, to begin training for a Pro National Gym Association drug-free bodybuilder title in the 2019 Mr. Universe Bodybuilding Competition, just 18 weeks before he would make his debut at the competition and ultimately bring the title back to the United States.

also to a polygraph test about not using any performance-enhancing drugs,” Otero explained.

For the concentration and intensity necessary for competition preparation, what better motivator than to have a baby or two? “We have two beautiful kids, Blaise and Mia, who are within 15 months of each other,” Otero said.“Blaise will be 2 years old in February, and Mia was just born July 30.”

Training 13 years ago, Otero always felt his true passion was to help people physically and mentally. “At that time, I met an amazing baseball coach, trainer and Christian, Bruce Charlebois, from Highlands Christian Academy,” Otero said.

Charlesbois asked Otero to help his team with speed and strength, and that year was the first time the school went to the state regionals. “From then on, I haven’t stopped helping people, wellington the magazine | february 2020

wellington | health whether it be athletes or general fitness clients,” Otero said.

He also teamed up with Tony Cabrales at Tony Fit4life, which was a huge opportunity for him to start training more equestrian athletes.

“One thing I have learned throughout the years is that there is opportunity all around if you stay honest to your true passions,” Otero said. “For me, it is all about helping people do things they never thought they could. Also, when that opportunity presents itself, you must be willing to do the work.You can be presented with the greatest opportunity, but if you’re not willing to put in the time and passion, then that opportunity is completely meaningless.”

Workouts at Results Personal Training are personalized.“We believe in oneon-one customized training specifically for our client’s level, sport or goal with customized diet and fitness programing,” Otero said. “We are able to work

around injuries or any restrictions.”

Clients have direct access to fitness professionals who have lifelong experience dedicated to competing in highlevel athletics and fitness.

“We provide nutrition for weight loss, and services for general fitness to competitive bodybuilding, fitness for persons with disabilities, sports specific (football, baseball, wrestling, soccer) fitness, strength sports, powerlifting, bodybuilding, speed development and mass building,” Otero said. “We are really proud when we change our clients’ lives, or we help them do something they never thought they would be able to do.”

Otero loves the western communities and the Wellington area. “The Village of Wellington and the surrounding communities are such a unique place,” he said. “Not only do we get to enjoy the beautiful South Florida weather and lifestyle… the local economy is also for-

tunate enough to be involved in a very unique equestrian atmosphere.”

Otero’s hope is that through Results Personal Training, clients can reach their own goals to better themselves.

“They don’t have to get on stage or on the powerlifting platform, but it would be cool if they did,” Otero said. “It’s really not about that. It’s really about believing that they can better themselves, that the things we can control, we need to control, and that the internal doesn’t have to control our external. At Results Personal Training, we have a passion for helping and sharing what we have experienced and learned.We want to give this back to our clients and change each one of their lives personally.”

New Piatto Bravo Restaurant Offers A Creative Taste Of Italy

Piatto Bravo is a love story blended with a deep passion for traditional Italian food. Visions of creative and authentic dishes have come to life at the new restaurant, located on State Road 7 in the Village Green Center near Trader Joe’s.

“The food is authentic Italian, so our menu goes all the way from Northern Italy to Southern Italy.We cover the entire Italian concept,” owner Dominic Dipino explained.

Dipino and his wife, Chef Maria Amelia Baez, have a background steeped in Italian cuisine. While they grew up in the Dominican Republic, their grandparents, who hail from Italy, instilled upon them a passion for cooking and baking, with inspiration also coming from their parents. “We share the same passion, and we take it personally,” Dipino said.

Using only the freshest authentic Italian ingredients, Baez said it allows her to make innovative creations with hearty flavors.

“It’s very homey. When I thought of the menu, I thought of comfort food — what I liked having with my family at home. The Bolognese sauce, cheese ravioli. I love using Parmesan,” said Baez, who puts her own spin on the cheeses she uses. “I make my own blend of cheese. We grate different cheeses and make the blend here.”

The state-of-the-art wood-burning oven is the centerpiece of it all. Direct from Modena, Italy, it cooks pizzas evenly on a rotating floor at 600 degrees.

“We only work with wood. The perfect temperature is 600 for pizza. It

The pizzas come with a wide range of ingredients, from the traditional to the unique, like the Argentina pizza, which is topped with pomodoro, moz-

zarella, skirt steak and chimichurri aioli.

Prices range from $10 to $16.

Guests can also create their own, first choosing pizza or calzone, then adding from an array of toppings that include seven cheeses to five different meats, including imported Italian sausage and wellington the magazine | february 2020 113

pepperoni, topped with a choice of aioli.“We make our dough, our sauces and the aioli that go on top,” Baez explained.

“We also have cauliflower pizza. A lot of people order it without cheese, just sauce and vegetables. People think it’s not going to be crispy, but it’s thin and crispy, made like every other pizza.”

Baez chose a number of gluten-free and vegan items for the menu, including zucchini pasta, with four dishes to choose from, like pomodoro zucchini noodles, to pesto, Bolognese and gamberoni.

All pasta is made fresh in batches each day on site. One of the most popu-

lar items on the menu is the signature dish Rigatoni di Maria, made with truffled cream, shrimp and goat cheese mousse with mozzarella au gratin. Dishes range from $10 to $18.

“We create at home,” Baez said. “We create new things. We live by it. When we’re not working here, we’re cooking at home with our kids.”

The restaurant space has been completely remodeled with a rustic yet modern flair, nestled with outdoor seating next to a courtyard complete with an oversized chess board and a tranquil waterfall. The trattoria seats 97, while the outdoor patio offers eight additional tables.

The couple, along with their developer partners, opened six restaurants where they grew up in the Dominican Republic.When considering opening in the United States, their partners had ties to Wellington’s equestrian community and suggested they expand here.“It was

The couple met early in life, while in middle school. Baez is no stranger to South Florida. She studied culinary arts and food service management at Johnson & Wales University in North Miami.

Baez then headed back to the Dominican Republic, where she worked under renowned Chef Ciro Casola, who guided her to the Culinary Institute Lenotre in Paris, where she received her specialty degrees in pastries and hors d’oeuvres. From there, she became sous chef at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami.

During it all, she and Dipino rekindled their relationship and love of all things Italian. “We make magic here,” Dipino said.

The wide-ranging menu also offers risotto and paninis, as well as a number of desserts, including chocolate souffle and Toblerone mousse. A kids’ menu is also offered, as well as a daily lunch menu.

Desserts include the Toblerone Chocolate Mousse served with dark chocolate brownie.

It includes a large variety of homemade pasta, pizza and more offered Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There’s also a full bar — cucumber martinis and espresso martinis are two of

the specialties. Daily happy hour is from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.A full coffee bar offers cappuccino, espresso and more to top off your meal.

Hard work has paid off for Dipino and Baez, who are excited about how well the new restaurant has been embraced by the community.

“Sometimes, I can’t believe it. Believe in your dreams, work very hard. Never stop, even when things get tough,” Baez said. “This wasn’t easy. It took a lot of work and sacrifice. I have the best partner and team. We put a lot on hold. We do it out of love.”

The restaurant is open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Delivery is available through Uber Eats, Delivery Dudes and DoorDash.
