WEF is produced and managed by Equestrian Sport Productions, LLC. Each show week starts on Wednesday and concludes on Sunday, with major competitions showcased in the International Arena daily and on Saturday nights.

TERNATIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER THE STADIUM AGDF The Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF, January 14-Apri 2, 2016) is one of the world’s largest international and national dressage circuits featuring seven CDI events.

Included are four FEI World Cup qualifiers, one 4* and one 5*, the only FEI Nations’ Cup Series CDIO in the Western Hemisphere, and two U.S. National Events. The AGDF is offering more than $650,000 in prize money for the seven international competitions, making it one of the richest circuits in the world.

In addition to the facility being home to world-class dressage, it will also host exciting jumper derbies and grand prix events, horse exhibitions, and equestrian clinics. The Stadium at PBIEC also houses the Palm Beach Riding Academy.

BY JOE NASUTI The best way to describe my visit is... yummy... yummy... yummy! This is the best Indian food for my tummy... and yours!

The India Grill + Bar is the home of the best Indian food in the Palm Beaches!

If you’ve never tried Indian food, you don’t know what you have been missing. I became a fan of Indian food in the early 1980s at a Christmas party hosted by an Indian doctor in Philadelphia, and I’ve been addicted ever since to the wonderful flavors of India.

Let me make it very simple for first timers. I would highly recommend the following. For starters, try the Onion Bhajee ($5.95), the spicy Indian version of the blooming onion, but far better, along with the Garlic Naan Bread ($3.95). For an entree, I would recommend either Chicken Tikka Masala ($16.95), or the incredible Mixed Grill Platter ($25.95), an assortment of Tandoori grilled shrimp, lamb chops, chicken Tikka and Malai lamb, or any delicious curry dish ($11.95 to $18.95). They are simply amazing and large enough to share.

Next to curry, naan bread is as Indian as it gets, and the garlic naan at India Grill + Bar is a must — then again, any and all of their curry dishes are my favorites and will soon become yours. I travel around the world and always seek out an Indian restaurant while on vacation. My travels include New York City, where you will find some of the best Indian restaurants in America, and my travels to England. There are 2,100 McDonald’s restaurants in England and 2,200 Indian restaurants, where you will find some of the best in the world. Fortunately, you and I only have to travel to Royal Palm Beach to experience the wonderful flavors of India!

Delights ($9.95 to $14.95), and all can be prepared vegan style. A customer waiting for takeout recommended the Vegetable Malai Kofta ($14.95), croquettes of ground vegetables and cheese, stuffed with nuts and raisins in a creamy and tasty sauce.

Everything I tasted was incredible!

There are more than 70 authentic offerings from which to choose, so if you are a connoisseur of Indian food, then all you need to do is either try something you have never heard of (I do this all the time) or close your eyes and point. Either way, you are in for an incredible treat. As good as the dinner is, dessert is something else entirely. Here, I would order Mango Kulfi, a traditional Indian mango ice cream... Try it, and welcome to India. Over the years, I have become accustomed to the best Indian restaurants, and India Grill + Bar is one of the best. I will be going back very soon, very often!

In addition to the main dining room, there is much more than meets the eye, including a private dining area and bar that accommodates up to 90 guests for holiday parties, banquets, business meetings and even weddings. The bar area is a great place to host a social event for upward of 50 guests. My favorite is the private cozy dining room — this well-appointed area is top notch for a VIP party that will impress up to 18 of your guests!

World’s Best Equestrian Competition At 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival The 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival is now underway at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The high-energy 12-week circuit is worldrenowned for its size, scope and caliber of competition — and it is all happening right here in our hometown. This month, we showcase how WEF brings Countdown To RIO the best equestrians in the world to Wellington each year, highlighting all that OLYMPICS the festival has to offer, including a look at some of the riders in our annual 2016 Faces of WEF section.

With this being an Olympic year, all eyes are on Wellington. The countdown to Rio de Janeiro is on, and top show jumper McLain Ward has his eye on the gold. Profiled this issue, Ward explains his plan for achieving his dreams of Olympic gold this summer. The Great Charity Challenge returns to the show grounds this month with a “fairy tale” theme. Now in its seventh year, the Great Charity Challenge will benefit more than 30 local nonprofits. The pro-am equestrian competition has so far distributed in excess of $7.5 million to more than 150 nonprofits. This year, the event is expected to add an additional $1.5 million. Learn all about it in this month’s issue. The Feb. 6 event is open to the public and free — so come out and cheer on your favorite!

Also this month, we caught up with Michael Ferreira and his team at Chukker.TV out on the fields as he shared some of the expansion plans for this Wellington-based polo broadcast service. One of the highlights of the winter season in Wellington is the Challenge of the Americas, which draws devoted crowds who come out to watch elite dressage athletes perform intricate musical quadrilles and see show-jumping competitors test their skills during an event designed to raise money for breast cancer research. Mark your calendars today for the March 11 event at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Our new Wellington Education series continued this month with a profile of Elbridge Gale Elementary School teacher Khessia Jean-Baptiste, who has created a unique mentoring program designed to provide the inspiration that so many students need. 2016 Edition Of American Equestrians Got Talent Gets Underway

This year’s run of American Equestrians Got Talent held its first night of auditions Wednesday, Jan. 13 at White Horse Fashion Cuisine. The talent contest is a fundraiser to benefit USEF High Performance Programs through the USET Foundation. Auditions continue weekly through March, with the grand finale on March 20. Jumper McLain Ward Returns To Wellington With His Eyes On Rio

Show jumping star McLain Ward entered the 2016 season with a singular purpose in mind. “There’s one goal: to win two gold medals in Rio,” the three-time Olympian said. “There are some steps along the way, but that’s the only goal on the radar.”

For most, the goal of winning individual and team gold medals would be a lofty one. For Ward, with an FEI Longines top 10 ranking as of December 2015, holding eighth place with only two Americans ranked higher, the odds of achieving his goal are good. In fact, they’re really good.

Ward has reached the sweet spot in his career, which has spanned decades.

It has brought him numerous accolades, including everything from being the youngest rider to win the U.S. Equestrian Team Medal Finals and the United States Equestrian Federation Show Jumping Talent Derby (at age 14) to being the youngest rider, in 1999, af-

ter winning 13 Grand Prix victories, to pass the $1 million Grand Prix winning mark, to competing in 14 FEI World Cup Finals and more recent achievements, such as more than 20 first-place wins in 2015 alone.

His success at the moment is due not only to his innate talent, but also having in place the combination of the right horse, the right rider and the right support team.

Riding comes as naturally as breathing for the “almost third generation in horse sports” rider, whose father was a successful Grand Prix rider, and whose mother rode hunters and trained.

“It was kind of in the DNA. I was

brought up in the environment of the farm,” he said. “It was the natural course.”

Ward had the opportunity, the ability, the raw talent and the passion.

“I guess it’s the only thing I’ve ever known, and it has been a wonderful life,” he said. “Horses have given a lot, and the people in the community have given a lot. It’s a blessed story.”

Each year, as he has for the past three decades, Ward travels from his home in New York to compete in Wellington at the world-famous Winter Equestrian Festival.

“We’ll use the events here at WEF to build up through the spring. These are obviously important events in themselves, and this is a great facility,” he said of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

The path to reaching the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Ward explained, starts with working backward and planning, having the horse priming at the right time, and everyone staying healthy.

In 2015, Ward met his goals, bringing him closer and closer to achieving his overarching 2016 goal.

“Winning the Pan Am Games was a huge goal,” he said. “Rothchild has been a huge partner of mine for a number of years. We’re coming into our ninth season this year, so we’re really proud to be able to do that and represent the country.”

Azibantos, Bueno, Adele and, last but not least, HH Azur, all have taken their turns receiving ribbons and placing.

“We also had a very successful year in the Grand Prix. We won a number of big ones and brought along HH Azur, the horse that we’re aiming toward Rio,” he said. “I think it is a very exciting time in my career.”

HH Azur, a stunning bay Belgian Warmblood mare with a bright white blaze, hasn’t been selected by chance.

There’s something extra special about her.

“She has more talent — that’s a combination of a lot of things, obviously — than just about anything that I’ve ever been around,” Ward said. “I think she’s uniquely special, and we’ll try to keep her healthy, fit and work backward from Rio.” The two, HH Azur and Ward, took first place at the $50,000 Douglas Elliman Grand Prix, Hampton Classic CSI 4*; the $400,000 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Spruce Meadows CSI 5*; and the $50,000 Old Salem Farm Grand Prix in 2015, along with second place at the $100,000 Suncast 1.50m Champion Jumper Series Final, Winter Equestrian Festival CSI 5*, and fifth place at the $1.5 Million CP Grand Prix, Spruce Meadows CSIO 5*.

Being great isn’t everything, though, when the goal is the Olympics.

“It takes an incredible amount of things.

A brilliant, exceptional horse — which I’ve been lucky enough to have a few times in my career — but in particular, I think in this moment, a great team, not only of myself and my wife, but also the owners, the grooms, the manager, the blacksmith, vets, everybody. It takes an army to do this,” Ward said. “Really, this has been their life’s work. We really have a moment that’s come together here that’s something really special. If we all live up to what we’re supposed to be, we can all pull it off.”

Riding and competing are a lifelong passion for Ward, who competes in a sport where riders have just 15 minutes to walk a course before taking their turn at the gate.

It takes work, practice and effort.

team,” Ward explained. “You can’t send the same pitcher to the mound every night. It’s no different in our sport.

We’re lucky enough to have great support with owners, so we have several mounts that can compete at the highest level. We alternate them. We plan their year out pretty well in advance. We try to pick horses to use in particular venues that suit their strengths.”

For what would be Ward’s fourth Olympic Games — he competed in 2004 and 2008 with mount Sapphire winning the team gold medal, and in 2012 with Antares F, the timing is perfect. The stage has been set.

“The Olympics is specialized and high-level,” Ward said. “In the United States, where the sport is really strong, you have to have a really phenomenal horse to make the team. If you’re realistically thinking of winning a medal, it has to be a super horse.”

BEEZIE MADDEN Beezie Madden, only the second person to be named the USEF Equestrian of the Year three times, is a top Grand Prix rider who has spent most of her life around horses. After all, her first pony was a Christmas gift when she was only four years old. Madden has been riding at the Grand Prix level since she was 22 years old. Madden rode in the 2008 Olympic Games and won the individual bronze medal and was a member of the gold medal U.S. team. She was part of the gold medal team at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and was on the gold medal 2003 Pan American Games team.

BEN MAHER British rider Ben Maher is working toward his next ticket to the Olympics. He aspires to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and his performance at WEF this season will be just a taste of what Maher is capable of. Riding since the age of 8, Maher solidified his place as a top rider in his 20s. In 2013, at the age of 26, he was ranked by FEI as the top rider in the world — the first British show jumper in 20 years to hold the title. Olympic appearances aren’t new for him — Maher competed at the games in 2008 and again in 2012, when he was part of the championship team, helping Great Britain take its first gold medal in 60 years. He is making waves, traveling the world, competing in 12 countries in 2015 at 48 national and international competitions. ERIC LAMAZE Quebec native and Ontario resident Eric Lamaze made equestrian history for his home country, becoming the first Canadian equestrian to win an individual Olympic gold medal in 2008, partnering with the late Hickstead, his beloved stallion, just two days after Canada won the team silver medal. Lamaze has been ranked three times as the top show jumper in the world (in 2008, 2010 and 2011), the same number of times he has been the Canadian show jumping champion. Since 1994, he has represented Canada for six consecutive World Equestrian Games. In 2010, he and Hickstead claimed bronze and “Best Horse.” Lamaze has continued to be successful with his new partners, including Fine Lady 5 and Zigali P S, and was part of Canada’s 2012 Olympic team that won fifth place. Ending 2015 with a flourish, he placed third at the Rolex Grand Prix in Switzerland.

He is looking forward to competing in the 2016 Olympic Games after riding the winter season at WEF.

GEORGINA BLOOMBERG Georgina Bloomberg is both a professional equestrian and a philanthropist, putting her well-known name to work helping to protect animals and aid equestrians in need. She began jumping at age six, choosing to follow the path exclusively in 2001. She quickly began winning top prizes. Bloomberg won the 2001 USET Talent Derby, won team gold at the North American Young Rider’s Championships in 2002 and individually in 2003, won the USET Maxine Beard Award in 2004, and made her debut at the FEI World Cup Final in 2005. In 2009, Bloomberg won the eighth round of the WEF Challenge Cup, and won round 1 of the WEF Challenge Cup Series in 2010 before winning the Bluegrass Festival Grand Prix and placing top in 2012 and 2013 throughout Europe and America.

More international competition and success followed in 2014 before a third place win at the Grand Prix at the Longines LA Masters and the National Horse Show. Last year, she helped the U.S. claim the team bronze at the 2015 Pan American Games. She is now back in Wellington, ready to win.

KENT FARRINGTON Kent Farrington started riding at 8 years old after seeing a picture of his mother on a horse. Since then, he has excelled, turning professional in 1999 and claiming a gold medal at the 1999 American Young Riders International Competition at age 18. In 2007, Farrington ended a winning season with first place at the Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Championships. With many wins in between, he took home the team bronze medal at the World Cup in 2014, won the Trump Invitational CSI 2* in both 2013 and 2014, and closed out 2015 to bring the United States its first-ever Rolex International Jumping Riders Club Rolex Top Ten Final in Switzerland in December. He ended 2015 as the top American on the Longines Rankings and is looking forward to the chance of competing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio after the riding the winter season at WEF.

LUCY DESLAURIERS Still a teenager, Lucy Deslauriers is often one of the youngest riders in her class, but she is not intimidated by age differences. Along with equine partner Hester, she has grown and continues to excel. In July 2015, she won the North American Young Rider Show Jumping Individual gold medal, then won the USEF Junior Jumper Championship. She won the 1.50m, CSI 3*-W at the Bromont International in 2015, finishing the year by winning the USEF U25 National Championship at the CP National Horse Show. She trains with her parents, Olympian Mario Deslauriers and Lisa Deslauriers. Rounding out her skills, Deslauriers focuses on both equitation finals and show jumping championships. MEREDITH MICHAELS-BEERBAUM American-born German Olympian Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum is a force to be reckoned with. She was the first woman to hold first place in the show jumping world rankings and was ranked number one for 24 months. A trip to Germany in 1991 kick-started her career after a 1989 first win at a Grand Prix event in Palm Beach, and she hasn’t stopped since. Michaels-Beerbaum was the first woman to represent Germany in a championship event and began winning Grand Prix events in Germany starting in 1992. In 2006, she took home the bronze individual and team medals at the World Championships, then at the 2008 Olympics, she took home fourth place. In 2010, she returned to the World Championships and won team gold. Michaels-Beerbaum has five European Championship wins from 1999 to 2009, won the World Cup Final gold in 2005, 2008 and 2009, and the silver in 2004. QUENTIN JUDGE Based at Double H Farm in Wellington, Chicago native Quentin Judge had a breakthrough year in 2012. At WEF, he finished 14th in the 2012 USEF Show Jumping Selection Trials for the Olympic Games. In November, he was named to the American team and helped the U.S. in winning the Nations Cup. The following year brought 10 top-five finishes, including four in Wellington. In 2014, Judge placed in the top five in 21 competitions, including five first-place wins. He competed at Tryon, Las Vegas, Calgary, Del Mar, Los Angeles, Rancho Murieta, North Salem, Saugerties, Calgary and more. After a fast-paced 2015, Judge is back in Wellington this winter looking to rack up wins at WEF.

SOPHIE GOCHMAN Sophie Gochman was named the Overall Pony Hunter Rider at the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival for her success throughout the circuit. She was champion and reserve champion in the Visse Wedell/Douglas Elliman Real Estate Small Pony Hunters aboard Dr. Betsee Parker’s Love Me Tender and Elation, respectively. She also took the circuit championship in the Medium Green Pony Hunters with Truly Yours. Just entering her teen years, Gochman picked up other victories last year as well. She placed first twice, second, fourth and sixth to win the overall Grand Champion Pony honors at the 2015 Capital Challenge Horse Show. She is quickly learning and excelling, and WEF continues to provide important equestrian lessons and life lessons for this up-and-coming young equestrian.

TIFFANY FOSTER British Columbia native Tiffany Foster’s life has contained an equestrian element since her parents bought her a rocking horse as a baby. At age 8, she began taking lessons. Before she was 21, she had already won both the Running Fox CET medal and the Jump Canada medal at the 2001 Royal Winter Fair. Exploding into the international show jumping arena in 2011, she won the $80,000 TD Cup, then rode for the Canadian Equestrian Team, helping to win second place at the $350,000 BMO Nations Cup. By the end of 2015, she competed at the 2012 Olympic Games, the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, the 2015 Pan American Games and has represented Canada at more than 22 Nations Cup events. After WEF this season, she hopes for her next stop to be the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

World’s Best Equestrian Competition In Action At The 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival In Wellington The 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival is now underway at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The 37th annual show series opened Jan. 13 and continues through April 3. The 12-week circuit is world-renowned for its size, scope and caliber of competition, featuring more than $9 million in prize money. While WEF brings the best equestrians in the world to Wellington each winter, the festival also welcomes everyone from the local area to enjoy everything that the show grounds has to offer.

WEF is the largest and longest-running circuit in equestrian sports, with riders from 33 countries and all 50 U.S. states represented. WEF hosts the nation’s premier events for children, juniors, adults and amateurs — for riders from age 2 to age 70 — in more than 70 unique divisions of competition. More than 6,000 horses compete within the circuit.

PBIEC is one of the finest venues in the world for equestrian sports, and its growth has ushered in a new level of competition in the United States. The expansive facility features 500 acres, 12 competition arenas, 256 permanent stalls for horses, horse trails, pedestrian paths, dedicated shopping areas, food vendors and more, making it a place anyone can appreciate, whether an equestrian or a spectator.

WEF has stepped up its visibility worldwide with major cable sports network broadcasts of the biggest events of the season. Last year’s television coverage included shows on NBC Sports.

More television will be included for this year’s circuit, and people from around the world can watch all the major events at WEF online at www.coth.com. Live streaming has become an ideal way for

equestrian sport fans to follow along with the competition.

Highlights of this year’s WEF include four weeks of CSI 5* competition. The first five-star class of the season is the $380,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix CSI 5* on Feb. 13 during WEF Week 5. Following that are the $380,000 Suncast Grand Prix CSI 5* on Feb. 27 in WEF Week 7 and the $380,000 Douglas Elliman Grand Prix CSI 5* on March 12 during WEF Week 9. The final five-star is the culminating event of the season, the $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5* on April 2.

International competition will also feature the popular $150,000 FEI Nations Cup on Friday, March 4, during week eight’s CSIO 4* competition, as well as 52 FEI World Ranking classes throughout the circuit.

WEF hosts the best competition in the country, with 73 professional and amateur divisions for hunters, jumpers and equitation. Special hunter and equitation events include the USHJA/ WCHR Peter Wetherill Hunter Spectacular on Saturday, Feb. 20 in WEF Week 6; the George Morris Excellence in Equitation presented by Alessandro Albanese on Friday, March 25 in WEF Week wellington the magazine | february 2016

11; and the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by Dietrich Insurance and hosted by Tailored Sportsman, on April 2-3 in WEF Week 12.

Other top jumper events include the $170,000 Artisan Farms Under 25 Grand Prix Series, with seven classes for the best young show jumpers throughout the circuit; the Hollow Creek Farm Children’s/Junior/Young Rider Nations Cups on Saturday, March 5; and the $10,000 Holtgers 5-Year-Old Jumper Classic, $15,000 Adequan 6-Year-Old Jumper Classic and $20,000 Adequan 7-Year-Old Jumper Classic, all held during WEF Week 12.

The Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments, an exciting pro-am show jumping event, will take place for the seventh year on Saturday, Feb. 6. The popular event has raised more than $7.5 million for more than 150 Palm Beach County charities

Friday nights will feature action in the main arena at the Stadium at PBIEC throughout the circuit. The Stadium, built on almost 60 acres, features a beautifully manicured grass derby field with natural obstacles adjacent to the Adequan Global Dressage Festival grounds, which house a main arena surrounded by grandstand seating and the Global Pavilion, 200 permanent stalls, the Wellington Equestrian Realty Arena that can fit three regulation-size dressage Nations Cup teams at PBIEC.

In addition to the facility being home to world-class dressage, it will also host exciting grand prix events, horse exhibitions and equestrian clinics. During WEF Week 6, six different show jumping events will be staged at the Stadium, both in the International Ring and on the grass derby field.

Presented By Fidelity Investments, A Fairy Godmother To Palm Beach County Nonprofits For the seventh year in a row, the Great Charity Challenge, presented

by Fidelity Investments, returns to Wellington on Saturday, Feb. 6 during the 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival.

Last year’s superhero-themed event brought thousands to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center to celebrate the heroes of the community — the Great Charity Challenge sponsors, the riders donating their time and all those involved with the charitable organizations.

To date, the GCC has distributed in excess of $7.5 million to more than 150 nonprofits in Palm Beach County. This year, the event is seeking to raise at least $1.5 million to add to this already incredible fundraising total.

Founded in 2010 by Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo and his daughter Paige, the Great Charity Challenge has seen the equestrian community take charitable giving to a

new level. The event has impacted thousands of lives through its unique equestrian competition, with 100 percent of its proceeds being donated directly to Palm Beach County nonprofits.

While most organizations are supported and funded through the community, money raised during the GCC are used to help cover the operating expenses of charities, a crucial need that typically attracts fewer donors. Replacing impact windows in a homeless shelter, maintaining vehicles for a food pantry and paying a charity’s insurance expenses are just a few examples of the ways that the event enables Palm Beach County charities to continue to serve the community.

“Support from the Great Charity

Challenge has been vital to our agency,” said Matthew Constantine, executive director of Adopt a Family of the Palm Beaches. “While some funders are reluctant to fund a bricks-and-mortar project, the GCC has not shied away from the very real need to maintain safe and secure housing while keeping the facilities in good condition.”

Bellissimo is excited as this year’s event draws near.

“As always, my daughter Paige and I, along with the many generous families and companies that contribute to this charitable evening, look forward to this great event each year,” he said. “It is rare that you get the opportunity to touch so many lives in such a unique way. We are very proud of the impact that the GCC has had right here in our backyard in Palm Beach County, and are beyond grateful to the team and corporate sponsors.”

It has a large presence in the equestrian industry. To date, it has adopted more than 9,000 dogs.

Following its participation in the Great Charity Challenge last year, Danny & Ron’s Rescue partnered with Animeals on Wheels, an extension of Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches, providing pet food and veterinary care to homebound seniors with dogs or cats.

• The Kids Cancer Foundation concentrates on providing hope and support to local children and families battling childhood cancer and/or blood disorders. “Thanks to the Great Charity Challenge grant, we are able to offer programs and provide services to assist 400-plus young patients and families in our community we care for,” said Mi-

chelle O’Boyle, founder and executive director of the nonprofit.

• Family Promise of South Palm Beach County’s mission is to empower families in making their transition from homelessness to sustainable independence. “The Great Charity Challenge donation has helped families and children affiliated with our agency in ways that you cannot imagine,” Executive Director Kokie Dinan said. “Since January 2015, we have provided 3,253 bed nights and 9,759 meals for 19 families.”

• Communities in Schools serves students struggling with academics, attendance and behavior. The GCC money was used to pay for site coordinators’ salaries. Via these coordinators, Communities in Schools was able to assist low-performing students accomplish the incredible goal of having 100 percent of the high school seniors served by the program graduate this past spring.

• The Equestrian Aid Foundation is an organization that provides grantbased assistance to horsemen and equine-related professionals suffering from illness or catastrophic injuries.

For almost nine months, the organization’s Palm Beach County recipients were entirely supported by money from the Great Charity Challenge.

“Our goal was to do something that was different. We wanted the event to raise awareness for many charitable organizations throughout the community,” said Paige Bellissimo, co-founder of the event. “Funds awarded during the GCC are put straight to work, and that makes a big difference. We are excited for this year’s list of participating charities and look forward to having the community join us on Saturday, Feb. 6.”

This year’s event is sure to have a “fairy tale” ending as riders will be wearing their best outfits representing Tinker Bell, Alice in Wonderland, Princess Ariel, Prince Charming and more.

A best costume award will determine a bonus for the lucky charity whose team wins.

Children who come to watch the event are encouraged to come dressed to impress, with the chance of winning a special gift and award that evening.

“Combining philanthropy, sports and passionate individuals in general is something unique,” GCC Executive Director Anne Caroline Valtin said.

“I’m not sure we’ve ever experienced this kind of atmosphere anywhere else.

It brings out the best in everyone and gives us all a chance to dream a little, bringing our ‘inner child’ out an one evening.”

What To Do At WEF The best part about the Winter Equestrian Festival, besides seeing all of the beautiful horses, is the ability to enjoy the beautiful Palm Beach International Equestrian Center facility and all that it has to offer.

Don’t Miss Saturday Night Lights!

The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center has become the place to be in Wellington on Saturday nights. Combining the fun of the Kids Fair, the party atmosphere of the Suites and the Gallery, the food and drinks at Tito’s Tacos and the Tiki Hut, all centered around the best equestrian competition in the world, you get a unique environment that provides something for everyone to enjoy.

The Saturday Night Lights series of events runs throughout the 12-week Winter Equestrian Festival circuit. Each year, the crowd of spectators grows as more and more people in the local community learn about equestrian sports and embrace WEF. The very best horses and riders compete each Saturday night to represent their sport, and while competition is foremost, they also love riding for a big crowd.

“It is always a really nice atmosphere and a good crowd here on Saturday, so it is always really exciting to ride here,” said Marie Hecart, winner of one of the biggest CSI 5* classes of the season last year. “[My horse] loves it. She likes the noise, the crowd and the night.”

Saturday Night Lights events began this year on Jan. 16 with the $75,000 Battle of the Sexes. Last year, the men and women tied.

“It is a fun venue, and it is fun to have the crowd that involved,” men’s teammate Alex Granato said. “I think it is a good way to start the circuit with the crowd coming out.”

Saturday Night Lights mostly features grand prix show jumping competition, but there are a few select events that stand out with unusual competition, including the Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments on Feb. 6, the $100,000 USHJA/WCHR Peter Wetherill Hunter Spectacular on Feb. 20, and the Hollow Creek Farm Children’s/Junior/Young Rider Na-

Eventing At PBIEC: A New Equestrian Sport Arrives In Wellington

The Olympic sport of eventing made its debut at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center last year to great success, and its return in 2016 is anticipated to be another exciting competition bringing the best in the sport to Wellington.

The Asheville Regional Airport Wellington Eventing Showcase, presented

by Wellington Equestrian Realty, will take place on Feb. 5-6 at the Stadium at PBIEC. With the success and positive feedback from the riders at last year’s event, prize money was increased from $50,000 to $75,000, making it one of the richest eventing competitions in the United States.

Approximately 30 of the world’s top horse/rider combinations in the sport, including Olympians, Pan American Games participants, and members of World Equestrian Games teams from several countries, will compete this winter in Wellington.

Competitors will demonstrate the first phase of the three-part sport, focusing on the balance and fluidity of dressage on Friday, Feb. 5. The competition then continues with the stadium jumping and cross-country portions of the sport the following day, Saturday, Feb. 6. The event will run at the advanced level.

Household names such as Phillip Dutton, Boyd Martin and Buck Davidson Jr., all of whom have represented Team USA internationally on a number of occasions, graced Wellington with their presence last year, and they and more big names are expected in 2016.

Martin, currently ranked 10th in the world, and Dutton, ranked seventh, are originally from Australia, changing their citizenship to represent the Unit-

ed States in international competition.

They are considered mainstays at the top of the sport. Both continue to exemplify the talent and precision of elite eventing riders.

“I’ve been lucky enough to compete in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Holland, the U.S., France and England, and this is by far the best competition I have ever been to,” Martin said after last year’s competition. “The organizers have put on something that I have never seen before, and I am just so proud to be here.”

More than 2,000 spectators enjoyed a spectacular view of the cross-country phase from the hill beside the derby field, as many were introduced to eventing for the first time.

“The athletes are spectacular, and the owners are amazing in this sport,” Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo said. “It is a great group of people, and we are encouraged and inspired to take this sport to the next level in Wellington.”

The 2016 edition of the WEF Sport Horse Auction is set to take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center Stadium.

The WEF Sport Horse Auction is key destination for many of the sport’s top professionals, with numerous graduates of past auctions moving on to compete at the highest levels of competition around the world.

WEF Sport Horse Auction begins its career at one of the most prolific and prestigious breeding operations in the world, VDL Stud, located in a small town in The Netherlands. VDL Stud, founded in 1972 with a single mare, has grown into one of the largest family-operated breeding businesses in the world, maintaining its global reputation as the leading breeder of sport horses for numerous disciplines, including jumping, dressage and hunters.

The 2015 WEF Sport Horse Auction included several additional seasoned competitors encouraged by client demand, alongside a number of young prospects, providing potential buyers with a diverse selection. The highest bid of the night was for the only stallion available that evening, a 2010 Dutch Warmblood that sold for more than $400,000 as a top future hunter prospect.

As the market for VDL-bred and trained horses continues to expand, more and more top class competition mounts begin their careers under the watchful eye of van de Lageweg and his team.

“We’ve received a lot of very good feedback and have also seen great results from horses sold in previous auctions,” he said. “A lot of clients who have participated in past auctions continue to come back and purchase new horses, which is a great sign of the quality we’re producing. This event has become very professional, and that is the biggest difference in terms of what we will bring

over year to year. It changes the environment and scope of buyers present at the auction.”

The highly anticipated 2016 WEF Sport Horse Auction will offer prospective bidders and buyers an expansive group of future champions. As the event enters its fourth year, the standards have never been higher. Spectators are encouraged to attend the auction and watch from the stands as horses are presented to the bidders.

WEF To Host Book Signings With Ann Romney And George Morris The Winter Equestrian Festival will host two book signings in 2016, both at the Stadium at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The first will be with Ann Romney on the evening of Friday, Feb. 12, during the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. Those wanting an autograph and a sly comment from the legendary George Morris can meet him on Sunday, March 27, at the Stadium’s derby field.

Bestselling author and former first lady of Massachusetts Ann Romney opens up for the first time detailing her battle with multiple sclerosis, her faith and finding joy. Through her book, In This Together: My Story, Romney discusses her diagnosis with MS in the mid-1990s and how important equine therapy was to her recovery.

Romney is well-known in the equestrian community, largely in part to her ownership of Olympic dressage star Rafalca, who competed with rider Jan Ebeling for many years. During this year’s Adequan Global Dressage Festival, Ebeling will compete on several new horses.

“Horses and the sport of dressage have been an integral part of my life,” Romney said. “I am excited to visit the Adequan Global Dressage Festival not only to see my own horses compete, but to enjoy this great event. I can’t wait to share my book with fellow passionate equestrians.”

Last April, the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases announced a social media campaign, 50 Million Faces (#50MillionFaces), to lead a global discussion about the impact of five neurologic diseases that collectively affect more than 50 million people worldwide.

The 50 Million Faces community offers those affected — and their loved ones — a place to share their stories and inspire hope and empowerment.

Wellington-Based Chukker.TV Plans To Expand Its Reach In 2016 Story and Photos by Julie Unger

Michael Ferreira was working on his own Internet streaming service when he received a call three years ago from Melissa Ganzi of the Grand Champions Polo Club.

Ganzi wanted to merge the world of polo with the world of Internet broadcasting, and the two met to discuss how Ferreira’s startup could fit into the world of polo.

“We experienced the sport, and we instantly got hooked,” Ferreira said.

producer of Chukker.TV, worked with his team to create instant replay technology for polo umpires. A tech guy, and not an equestrian, Ferreira had to first learn about the sport. Originally, the new venture was called PoloNow. “Then I came up with Chukker.TV. Anyone who knows polo knows chuk-

ker, because it’s the periods. Everyone knows TV. You either know right away what it is, or you’re going to ask,” he said.

After the branding was set, everything started moving quickly. They started small, with a few cameras, and kept growing.

“2015 was a really big year for us.

We had the entire high-goal season at IPC [the International Polo Club Palm Beach], and we had Grand Champions’

spring, fall and winter seasons,” Ferreira said.

Ouside Wellington, the team traveled to Aspen to cover events at Ganzi’s Aspen Valley Polo Club and did tours with the United States Polo Association.

They covered polo events at Saratoga in New York and the Greenwich Polo Club’s East Coast Open. “That really put us on the map,” Ferreira said.

After a year of strong growth, he has big plans for Chukker.TV in 2016.

“We’re a young company, really driven to give our viewers the best experience possible,” he said.

Ferreira’s team is made up of talented individuals, many of whom are not from the polo world, which makes them uniquely suited to create a way to engage both polo enthusiasts and polo newcomers.

Through this approach, they’ve engaged those who wouldn’t have otherwise known polo is such a popular sport

with an international demand. “Every broadcast, not only are we broadcasting live, but we’re live-tweeting,” he noted.

Ferreira is a technology enthusiast, utilizing state-of-the-art cameras and the newest drones available for capturing live aerial video of the games. The company designs and employs its own servers with the best technology available. They even broadcast in 4K. “We did the U.S. Open in 4K,” Ferreira said. “No one’s doing that. Foot-

ball’s not doing that; you can’t find 4K football.”

His goal is to keep Chukker.TV on that cutting edge. “We’ve very much a tech company, as much as a broadcast company, which is important,” he said.

Ferreira recently chaired Flavors of Wellington and Winterfest 2014, both organized by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s important to keep reminding the community that there’s more besides a shopping mall. A lot of people don’t realize that this is right here. I think that is my little mission for this year. To really promote that we have something awesome — not just polo at Grand Champions, but equine in general. We have such an awesome [equestrian] community,” he said. “Everyone should embrace it.”

Building upon its tech footprint, and becoming even more accessible, is on the 2016 agenda for Chukker.TV. They’re working with the USPA to gain access to even more clubs, venues and

tournaments, to present more games to viewers. “My only goal with Chukker.

TV is to give my viewers a great experience. The more polo I can give them, from more places, not only here in the U.S., but around the world, the happier I get,” Ferreira said.

Right now, Chukker.TV can be found on Roku and Chromecast, and has an Android app. They’re working on getting into the Apple store, and there are many more innovations to be unveiled throughout the year. Through Roku, polo games can be seen on whatever size television is available.

Polo players have provided positive feedback from their families and friends, who may be in other countries and are now able to watch them play.

“The fact that you can share someone’s great success, an awesome game, something they really put their heart into, and they can cheer you on as it’s happening, that’s exciting to be able to give that to the players and their families,” Ferreira said.

Chukker.TV has brought the game from the field to portable technology and to the living room.

“We’re trying to put polo on the map. We have some cool new tech that we’re going to play with this year,” he said. “We’re going to keep pushing the ultra-HD envelope.”

Through the Chukker.TV app, users can access content and interact with Chukker.TV during the games. Fill out a simple form on the program and the announcers will receive it during the game and be able to answer questions and provide insight.

“We’re going to be on SmartTV soon,” Ferreira said. “We’re ready to expand to all of the outlets that go to the living room. This year, we’re going to saturate the market.”

Beyond polo, Chukker.TV’s technology lends itself to other sports, including show jumping and dressage, which is another avenue of future expansion.

Wyndmont Team Is ‘Ready To Wyn’ In 2016

Wyndmont Inc. is a world-class equestrian facility based in Loxahatchee, founded by legendary horsemen Ronnie Beard and Michael Dorman in 1986. Together, the pair has trained numerous horses and riders to go on to compete at the highest levels in the sport of show jumping, both nationally and internationally.

The Wyndmont team recently expanded with the addition of business partner Mark Alter, and a new group of talented young horses with Olympic potential that will continue to take the team to the top under the guidance of Australian rider Matt Williams.

Wellington residents for almost 30 years, Beard, one of the most highly respected trainers and coaches in the world, and Dorman, who has ridden on several gold and silver medal Nations Cup teams, decided to base their business in the “Winter Equestrian Capital of the World” five years ago after pre-

viously being based in the Northeast.

In addition, their South Florida farm received a total renovation, transforming it into a top-of-the-line competitive show jumping facility.

“Our homes are in Wellington,” Beard said. “When we had our old farm, we would be coming to Florida and we found ourselves returning north later and later every year, so it finally made more sense to make our base here. We completely redid the arena and put in very good footing. We invested a lot into the grass jumping field. It was just regular land before, but now we’ve got

a proper turf. We even incorporated some rolling hills on the field. It was a complete and total makeover.”

In order to continue to grow and stay consistent within the evolving industry, each member of the Wyndmont team plays a crucial role in the overall business that makes it so successful.

“I am the organizer,” Beard explained. “A lot of the sales and promotional tasks are my job. I also give Michael and Matt advice. I have a few wellington the magazine | february 2016

years’ experience over them, so as they do their jobs, I can help with whatever they might need. Michael’s job is to flat the horses — set them up and make sure they’re ready to win. Matt’s job is to actually come in and compete. He’s

An Australian native, Williams has represented his home country at the Olympics and the World Equestrian

Games and is the most recent addition to the Wyndmont team. Beard and Dorman strongly believe in giving back to the equestrian community by passing on their experiences and knowledge to young riders in order to shape the next generation of equestrian professionals in the best way possible.

“It’s very important to me to bring up young riders and teach them correct horsemanship,” Beard said. “There are few of us older people left, and it’s our job to try to maintain some of the traditions and pass those on.”

Passionate about giving back and supporting the future of the equestrian sport, the team at Wyndmont also donated a jump for this year’s Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals with all of the past winners’ names inscribed on it.

geldings Zephyr and Valinski S. Both geldings have had great success showing around the country this season with Williams, including Valinski S finishing in third in the $100,000 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Las Vegas.

“That was quite a large course, and very technical,” Beard recalled. “Valinski S was the first horse to jump a rubfree, clean round. He really stepped up and rose to the occasion. He is not a very big horse, but he has got a huge heart.”

With Valinski S, Zephyr and IV Ever, the Wyndmont team has high goals set for the future, including the Olympics.

“They have all peaked up beautifully,” Beard said. “They’ve had a great year, and we’re going into this year with pretty well-made horses. I think Matt is pretty well short-listed for the games. If all went perfectly, that could be a reality, but it’s a long way away.”

Xcelerate Wellington Grant Contest Aims To Boost Local Businesses Story and Photos by Julie Unger

When CEO Aaron Itzkowitz and CFO Alan Berkun pitched their company Jinglz LLC to the judges at Xcelerate Wellington last November, they didn’t really know what might happen. As it turned out, they walked away with a $10,000 grant after winning the business competition created by the Young Professionals of Wellington to engage and stimulate the local business community.

The Jinglz idea was pitched to a distinguished panel of area business leaders, including Mark Bellissimo, CEO of Equestrian Sport Productions; Robbin Lee, CEO of Wellington Regional Medical Center; Wellington resident and Beebo inventor Martin Hill, who appeared recently on ABC’s Shark Tank TV show; and Jeff Brown, entrepreneur in residence at Florida International University.

“We’re so excited. The nature of the project may be simplistic in its concept, but what is being built, the platform behind it, is very technically complex. It’s also going to be about big data and scalability,” Itzkowitz said of Jinglz, an app that uses proprietary technology to ensure that users are more engaged with video advertisements.

It all started about two years ago, when Itzkowtiz’s son Yoseph was watching the Super Bowl, the commercials in between the game, and realized that

there was an opportunity for a business idea. “Advertisers pay a significant amount of money for their commercials to be played during commercial breaks,” said Itzkowitz, who has a background in marketing, sales and commercializing new ideas.

They discussed the potential of gaining feedback for advertisers as a means of targeting an audience, and the idea took off.

The program, an app for phones and tablets, allows the user to watch up to four commercials at a time and be entered into a jackpot where they are guaranteed to win money. The winnings come from the money that advertisers pay to join in the program.

Currently, Jinglz is set up for multiple jackpot games, with drawings every hour, and the ability to increase the frequency as needed. “It only takes 30 seconds of time to enter into a jackpot,” Itzkowitz said.

First prize might win $8,000, with multiple other prizes. “You’re guaranteed to win something,” he said. “It’s almost like a Robin Hood type of story.”

The advertisers pay to participate, and Itzkowitz expects advertisers to flock to Jinglz as they realize just how targeted the program is. The audience,

in turn, receives financial compensation for their feedback. Referrals and contests are also going to be built-in ways for consumers to engage with one another. Eventually, the plan is to provide feedback to marketing companies, allowing them to better target their advertisements.

“People are inundated with advertising in all walks of life. Most of the time, the advertising is not relevant to them.

As much as advertisers try to promote their brand, their products or their services to an audience, they don’t truly know their real audiences,” Itzkowitz

said. “Our mission is to really connect advertisers to consumers.”

Jinglz creates a way for users to engage with advertisements. The beta version of the app is expected to be available in early 2016 and is limited to 2,000 participants. After beta testing has concluded, the app will be open to more users.

In the meantime, Jinglz, a portfolio company working with Miami-based Rokk3r Labs, plans to start an internship program utilizing Wellington High School students interested in marketing, advertising and social media. In-

Challenge Of The Americas Continues The Fight Against Breast Cancer

The Challenge of the Americas is a much-anticipated highlight of the winter season in Wellington, drawing devoted fans and firsttime spectators every year. Crowds come out to watch elite dressage athletes perform intricate musical quadrilles and see showjumping competitors test their skills during the family-friendly event at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

With an exciting lineup of top dressage riders preparing some of the most advanced quadrilles to date, the 2016 event, slated for Friday, March 11, is not to be missed. IPC has upgraded its spectator seating for a more comfortable viewing experience, and refreshments will be available for general admission attendees, making it a fun and festive evening for Wellington community members.

But the driving force behind the challenge is what truly sets it apart.

Since its inception in 2002, the challenge has raised more than $3 million to finance lifesaving research. Proceeds

support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation through its partner Play for P.I.N.K., a nonprofit grassroots organization that raises money to fight breast cancer through lifestyle and sporting events. In 2015, Play for P.I.N.K. donated a total of $4.9 million to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which will go to support at least 19 research grants.

Founder and organizer Mary Ross established the challenge in memory of her mother, Jean Cruse, who died of breast cancer.

I am grateful to the riders, horse owners and horses, committee members, volunteers, sponsors and event attendees for keeping my mother’s memory and hope alive.”

Betsy Juliano, an honorary chair of the Challenge of the Americas, has carried on a tradition of hosting team practices at her Havensafe Farm in Wellington.

“This is a disease that touches all of our lives, either very directly or through very few degrees of separation,” Juliano said. “For that reason, being involved in the challenge allows all of us to be a little less helpless and a little more

European Equestrian Brands Call Wellington Home In North American Expansion

Equestrian sports have experienced a recent surge of growth and popularity throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Similar to the celebrated equestrian events in Europe that have enjoyed mainstream prosperity for decades, North America is now following suit. Many facets of the equestrian community have fallen in line and taken a leap forward into a promising future.

In recent years, equestrian brands such as Kingsland Equestrian and Parlanti Boots — European household names in sportswear and riding gear — led the charge in making a pilgrimage to a welcoming North American market. Spotted on riders from amateurs to top-ranked professionals across the pond, Kingsland sportswear and apparel based in Norway, as well as Parlanti custom and ready-to-wear Italian boots and chaps, were previously absent from American retail spaces, aside from a nominal presence in a few select tack shops.

Thanks to brands like Kingsland and Parlanti blazing a path, other European-based brands took notice and also established headquarters in the United States. One of those innovative brands is KASK Italian helmets. KASK products first became popular among cyclists and downhill skiers, as well as in industrial safety, before recently breaking into the equestrian scene. The company not only developed its first-ever riding helmet,

but also launched a global brand within the new niche. Alongside Kingsland and Parlanti, KASK now calls Wellington its North American home.

In an effort to dress the American rider from head to toe in some of Europe’s most successful fashion, tack and safety brands, these companies have chosen to set roots in Wellington. The firms are also spreading their message and gaining recognition by sponsoring brand ambassadors — from junior talent to some of North America’s brightest stars.

In 2007, Gianluca Caron — an Italian horseman with a passion for entrepreneurial opportunities at home in Europe — made a move to the U.S. with his eye on uncharted territory.

While helping to make Parlanti a go-to brand of boots in the U.S. and beyond in recent years, Caron also aided in the spread of Kingsland’s overseas popularity, as well as the launch of KASK helmets. Caron serves as North American brand manager for all three companies.

Caron is pleased that the brands he led to North America are finding success in the sport.

“Equestrian sports are continuing to grow in this part of the world, which offers so much opportunity. We are seeing more horses, more riders, more spectators, and with that comes a bigger market and the perfect environment for emerging brands,” Caron said. “As a result, Kingsland, Parlanti and KASK have hit the ground running in North America.”

While sales may be the engine of Caron’s success, from the beginning his focus has been shared between revenue and the power provided by support from influential American riders.

Sponsorships have become a driving force behind the promotion of all the products within his three brands.

With jumpers such as Candice King and Kent Farrington slipping into Parlanti boots, dressage phenom Laura Graves and young professional Reed Kessler sporting Kingsland gear, and the newly sponsored Andrew Welles and Spencer Smith wearing KASK helmets, Caron is cultivating a team of Alist ambassadors.

According to Welles, the American market is anything but oversaturated, and the opportunity to be associated with new products was one he couldn’t pass up. “Becoming a sponsored rider was an opportunity for me to be part of a new company that I believe is in this industry to stay,” he added. “I am proud to be a part of something so new and exciting in this country.”

With horse sports experiencing strong growth in North America, there are many equine-minded communities from coast to coast. There is no denying, however, that Wellington is the mecca of all things equestrian from dressage to hunters to show jumping and more. Nicole Shahinian-Simpson has achieved great success as a junior and young professional in the hunter, jumper and equitation rings — and she recently launched her new business: Riffle Hitch LLC, based in Wellington.

The winner of two major equitation championships and later going on to represent the United States internationally, Nicki has gained vast amounts of experience as a rider, trainer and active businesswoman within the equestrian industry. She has now refocused her attention from her own riding career to giving back and sharing her experiences and knowledge with a talented roster of up-and-coming horses and riders looking to achieve their own success in the show ring.

“I hit a point where I felt like the focus should not be on me anymore,” Nicki said. “I had to give in another area. I really enjoy teaching, coaching and being on the ground, as well as still riding and competing. I’ve been in the riders’ shoes, whether I’m teaching juniors or amateurs, and I feel like I can relate to whatever they’re going through walking into the ring.”

Nicki’s personal, firsthand experiences in hunters, jumpers and equitation allow her to relate to a variety of students and clients of all ages, including her daughter Sophie, who Nicki has had the opportunity to watch climb to the top of the junior rankings as both her mother and her coach.

“Watching Sophie be so successful is

probably one of my biggest enjoyments and accomplishments,” Nicki said. “It has been very exciting. Everything that she goes through and is going through with her riding, I’ve been there, so I can really relate to her, and it brings me back down memory lane. It has been really fun and enjoyable to focus on her, having done it myself.”

With the launch of her new business, Nicki is prepared to help any rider succeed with her classic training program that caters to riders of all levels.

the precision of the equitation,” Nicki explained. “Really, what it comes down to, is form and function. There are so many things that go into riding, but I always go back to the simple, basic fundamentals of correct American-style riding.”

For this, she has the benefit of having studied a wide range of styles.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with many professionals and trainers,” she added. “I’ve taken a little bit from everyone — what I like and don’t like — and that’s what shapes you as a trainer. However, more than anything, you go off of instinct and feel, and the program that you believe in for yourself and for your barn.”

Not only will Nicki’s students have a coach who has been there and gone through what they are going through, but she is also a top-level rider who is still an active competitor in the sport with the ability to ride any horse and

give it the preparation that it needs to be successful. “Having been in the same position that my students are in, I’m able to understand things from their perspective,” Nicki said. “As a trainer, it’s important to me to read each rider and help guide them through any weaknesses they may have, while also boosting their strengths.”

The famous “catch-riding kid” turned coach has always been known for her consistent results, both in the saddle and on the ground. Nicki’s ability to effectively perform and communicate with any horse she works with is a testament to her versatility as a rider and trainer. Her own personal experiences also allow her to connect and relate with any rider looking to take their next step in the sport.

Elbridge Gale’s Khessia Jean-Baptiste Has Created A Unique Mentoring Program Story by Chris Felker • Photos by Abner Pedraza

Now in her seventh year at Elbridge Gale Elementary School, teacher Khessia Jean-Baptiste is carving out a special space for students who lag behind their peers.

Jean-Baptiste is teaching familiar lessons — ones she had to learn herself as a child — to a select group of children as part of twin mentorship programs she recently started at the Wellington school.

Growing up in New York, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, she was drawn to education at an early age, learning skills that later would come in handy helping her mother run a home daycare facility.

“My mother always taught smaller kids, and at church, she ran the children’s ministries, so I would always see her in her behavior management style.

She was a pretty big influence,” JeanBaptiste recalled. “And then I realized that I was just good at it.”

She quickly learned that education would be a pathway to success in the United States. “My parents really, really pushed education, and put a lot on me to get it, because they weren’t English speakers,” Jean-Baptiste said.

She arrived in Florida with her family in 2000, when she was 14 years old. She completed her education locally, graduating from Wellington High School and attending Palm Beach Community College (now Palm Beach State College) before earning her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Florida Atlantic University.

“During my time at FAU, because I was in Wellington, they placed me at Elbridge Gale for my student teaching,” Jean-Baptiste said. “The teachers I worked with, the third-grade staff, we got along really well. They could see that I was really driven and dedicated and wanted to do well, so they recom114 february 2016 | wellington the magazine

mended that I try to get a job there.”

With support from her future colleagues, Principal Gail Pasterczyk offered Jean-Baptiste a position.

Jean-Baptiste continued teaching third grade for a while, until she ventured out on a different path. “I started studying for the Exceptional Student Education certification so I could become an ESE teacher,” she said.

After completing the training, she taught half regular classes and half ESE classes until she decided that she wanted to give her full attention to ESE classes.

“My classes are for kids with learning disabilities or some other exceptionality. Usually it’s the ones who are slower learners, those with emotional behavior disorders or some other health impairment that affects their ability to learn at the same rate or the same content as other students,” she said.

Jean-Baptiste explained that she is drawn to helping those children. “I like trying to find different ways to present things to them so they get it, because when they finally get it, it means so much to them,” she said.

But she came to a realization. “After being exposed to more grade levels, especially fifth grade, after I finished my first year with fifth grade, I felt concerned that some of the students were going on to middle school without having what we call ‘soft skills,’ like selfcontrol and time management,” JeanBaptiste said. “They didn’t really know how to do a big project from start to

finish without having me help them a lot.”

It’s a problem she recalled from her own formative years. “My parents didn’t really teach me time management, and so I struggled with it a lot,” JeanBaptiste said. “I knew that there were other kids who always just seemed to have their projects turned in on time.

As I got older, I realized that I need a planner. I need to set small goals.”

With this idea in mind, she created programs to fill this need. In 2013-14, she instituted the GOLD program for girls, followed this school year by the TAGS program for boys.

“GOLD stands for Goal-Oriented Ladies of Distinction. We had a small group of about 15 girls, and I had about five or six mentors, and everybody at school was extremely receptive to it,” Jean-Baptiste said. “I knew that we’d have to start this for boys as well. So this year, we started the TAGS program, which stands for The Association of Gentlemen Scholars.”

The small group programs cater to girls who are often quiet and don’t advocate for themselves or ask for help, and boys who are often tardy, have disciplinary problems and are underachieving. They are matched up with mentors from among about a dozen of Jean-Baptiste’s fellow teachers. She also invites outside speakers, all adult professionals, to address the groups.

“They talk to them about what they do, try to instill in them the importance of education and being motivated and responsibility and having your own drive and not always having people telling you what to do,” Jean-Baptiste said.

“I definitely like to focus on the social and emotional learning, because kids are smart. They learn a lot. If we’re not intentionally giving them positive social things to pick up on, they’re going to pick up on the negative,” JeanBaptiste said.

For girls, the mentoring focuses on esteem-building, goal-setting, learning how to navigate social situations, making more friends and maintaining those friendships, even social etiquette and dining etiquette. For boys, the lesson sets are a bit different: self-control, different ways to solve conflicts, the value of apologizing, being accountable for your behavior, dealing with frustrations and etiquette.

Jean-Baptiste is planning an end-ofyear luncheon where the students can invite someone important to them and must RSVP and dress up.

All together, these activities add up to life and attitude training, not just education. Jean-Baptiste thrives on seeing all the parts come together in her students before they head off to their next phase of education. “My biggest reward is seeing the kids enjoy learning,” she said. “It is hard to enjoy learning these days. The way the curriculum is changing is great for them; it’s really going to prepare them for college. But some of it is kind of boring. I strive to help them get interested in it. I love to see kids happy in school.”

Walk-In Medical Care And More At Ideal Family Practice

Ideal Family Practice & Walk-In Express Care, which opened last year at the recently constructed Medical Groves Plaza on Southern Blvd., offers a holistic, preventative approach to healthcare.

“We are nurse practitioners, so, generally, we care for anyone kindergarten age and up for primary care, and anybody a year and up for urgent care,” explained Tina Dochniak, DNP, ARNP, who has partnered with Stephanie Wise, ARNP, to operate a clinic that can offer most primary and urgent care services of a doctor’s office, but on a more personal level.

Urgent care services include immediate attention that is often not available at a doctor’s office. “Say you wake up and you have a sore throat,” Dochniak said. “You don’t have an appointment, so you just walk in. That can be anywhere from wounds and not feeling well to abdominal pain and chest pain.”

Dochniak and Wise are looking to serve families who need primary care, as well as flexibility.

“Kids are sick, you can’t get in to see your primary doctor because they don’t have walk-ins, or there’s a limited amount of walk-in appointments,” Wise (L-R) Stephanie Wise and Tina Dochniak.

said. “We have walk-in from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” Wise said. “You can still come in and get your physicals. There’s continuity of care in the sense that when you’re sick, you’re not going to one of the other urgent care centers where they may not know your blood pressure medicine.

We’re all on the same system.”

Both Wise and Dochniak grew up and attended local schools, including college.

“We know the area, we know the people, we had a patient base in this area already,” Wise said. “The opportunity arose. We didn’t actually pick this spot; it kind of arose out of a need for a walkin facility and an overflow-type of thing for the [doctor’s] office next door. We looked at it as a wonderful opportunity, especially to be out here in the western communities.”

Wise attended the King’s Academy and lived in the Loxahatchee area.

Dochniak attended John I. Leonard High School. They both attended Palm

Beach State College and Florida Atlantic University, where they received their ARNP degrees, and Dochniak also received her doctorate in nursing.

“Nurse practitioners are trained a little bit differently than physicians,” Dochniak said. “We are trained from an RN level to look at the patient as a holistic person, so we treat not only from a medical model, but also, the goal of nurse practitioning is to keep the patient healthy. It’s a lot of teaching about how to stay healthy.”

Wise said their office is a model of healthcare that Florida is catching up to.

Dochniak noted that nurse practitioners in Florida are more restricted in what they can do than most nurse practitioners nationwide.

“Nurse practitioners in many parts of the U.S. have been in practices on their own for years,” she said. “The movement is coming to Florida.”

In Florida, nurse practitioners work with a collaborative physician who signs a protocol with the state that takes responsibility but doesn’t have to be directly in the day-to-day care of patients.

“I think we have the opportunity to have more time with the patients and get to know them on a more personal basis,” Dochniak said. “The way that healthcare is moving, there are not a lot of physicians who do primary or family practice anymore, so nurse practitioners are filling that gap.”

Dochniak and Wise have arranged their schedules so one of them is always available when the office is open. “We take care of each other,” Dochniak said.

“When one of us is not here, the other one is here.”

Many real estate professionals have an interesting backstory that details the road taken to their current profession. You’d be hard-pressed, however, to find a tale more unique than that of Re/Max Direct’s Karen Gant. How many real estate agents do you know who also are lifetime members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences?

“I am a true movie buff,” Gant said. “After receiving a BFA (bachelor’s of fine arts) degree at Hunter College in New York City, I aspired to build a career in entertainment. I moved to Los Angeles and worked my way up to senior level marketing positions at Warner Brothers, Twentieth Century Fox and CBS, creating and producing movie and television advertising campaigns. During that period, I had the honor to be elected into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as a lifelong member.”

In 1994, Gant met her husband, Richard. A new phase of her life was about to begin.

“We began to think about buying a home together,” Gant said. “Good climate was a priority, and Florida seemed like the answer. I have always had a history with South Florida, where I visited generations of relatives over the years. In 1998, we bought a beautiful home in Boca Raton and quickly adapted to our new lifestyle and friends. Only one thing was missing: a new career to challenge me and provide stability for our new life. An acquaintance suggested real estate, and shortly thereafter, I was on my way to real estate school.”

Gant was also on her way to Wellington. She and Richard moved here in 2003, where she continued to specialize in luxury homes. “To me, a beautiful home reflects artistry in its architecture and design,” she said. “Initially, I focused on waterfront properties, as well as new construction. Since moving to Wellington, I have concentrated particularly on the community of Versailles, where I have lived and worked for more than 12 years, becoming the number one Realtor in transactions and closings.”

Gant credits the unique makeup of Wellington for making her job easier.

“The comfortable, laid-back charm of Wellington provides a great backdrop for me to work,” she said. “The majesty of the beautiful horses trotting along as cars whiz by is not typical of any area I know. I am impressed by the growth and

opportunity of Wellington, although I have had the experience of working all over Palm Beach County and know most of the area quite well.”

Gant has been associated with Re/Max Direct for three years. The relationship has been a successful one for both parties. “Their focus on new technology exceeds the boundaries of every other brokerage I have been affiliated with,” Gant said. “Since we inhabit a digital world where technology moves faster than warp speed, I feel confident knowing that I have the tools to serve my clients with maximum efficiency.

She takes a clear-eyed view of the future of the housing market.

“The current real estate market is still volatile,” Gant said.

“Although certain areas of the country have made a healthy recovery, Florida is still in the process. I see that improving now, and even with a slight increase in interest rates, for every prospective buyer, the American Dream is still fueled by the desire to purchase a home.”

Everything Old Is New Again We constantly hear clients say, “I don’t like wallpaper, it just looks old-fashioned!” I find that funny, because wallpaper is one of the hottest items on the market right now.

If you think wallpaper means your grandmother’s English garden floral print, you haven’t looked at these products in a long time. The traditional patterns are still out there. They may have today’s updated color palette, but they are available. For the more subtle and contemporary home, there is an abundance of grasscloth and other natural fibers to choose from. If you are daring, you can choose glass bead, mother of pearl, real leaves or handapplied ribbon wallpapers. Some have cork and gold leaf, while others are printed to appear to be marble or ceramic tile.

The next thing is deciding where and how far to go. We have all seen the rooms that were completely papered, including the ceiling, with fabrics the same print as the wallpaper. No one is going to ask you to do this. It frequently is a matter of “less is more.”

Just cover the wall of the bedroom that the headboard is on, making the bed a focal point.

Look at the inside backs of bookcases, entertainment centers and curio cabinets as a place to put some wallpaper “wow.” Local architecture uses a lot of wall niches. A really great wallpaper inside the niche can really make a beautiful backdrop for a piece of sculpture or hanging artwork. This is the place

to use the more exotic papers, since you will only be using a small amount.

Keep in mind that most papers are sold as double roll only. Remember this to figure how much extra you may have left over. Extra can be used to cover an existing wastebasket, make a cover for your datebook or used as matting in a picture frame. These are small and easy ways to coordinate small things in a space.

Where do you get wallpaper? Gone are the days of the local wallpaper store. For such a hot commodity, finding wallpaper is not as easy as it used to be. That’s where we come in. The best place to find wallpaper is your local design center.

Jordan’s Steak Bistro in the Pointe at Wellington Green is a great place to enjoy a delectable steak in a chic, upscale atmosphere. But the menu at this popular Wellington restaurant makes it so much more than a steakhouse, and one way to taste the diversity is through its signature Surf & Turf entrée.

Owner Jordan Naftal explained that the Surf & Turf special is a combination of three of the restaurant’s top menu items.

“It’s a Creekstone all-natural, 10-ounce filet served Oscar style. The filet will be sitting on asparagus. It has jumbo lump crab meat on top, with béarnaise sauce and three stuffed shrimp. They’re large shrimp served with little crab cakes, and a boat of crab mashed potatoes,” Naftal said. “For the crab mashed potatoes, we take jumbo lump crab and add it to the mashed potatoes and top that with lobster cream sauce.”

The crab cakes, a crowd favorite, hail from the original Jordan’s Steakhouse in Maryland, Naftal noted. Chef Dean Batlas created

the crab cakes, which became an immediate staple.

“It’s jumbo lump crab with a little bit of imperial sauce and panko. They’re killer. Anyone from Maryland who knows crab cakes loves them,” Naftal said.

The steak filet is all-natural; the jumbo lump crab is a crowd pleaser; and the crab mashed potatoes are a unique sensation. “I’ve never seen that anywhere else,” he said.

The dish was put together with the three ingredients as a special, and it has been a hit ever since — and the meal has quickly become a crowd favorite.

“No one has ever been unhappy with that dish,” Naftal said, explaining that such a

The menu at Jordan’s ranges from prime steaks and fresh seafood to freerange chicken. There are large and small plates, along with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. Wine bottles line one wall, offering plenty of options for the perfect pairing.

“We try to be as current as possible, and people, more and more, want to know, not only with food, but when you’re selling wine, what the climate was,” Naftal said. “They discuss different vintages, locations and grape varietals. With food, they want to know

where it is from, if it is fresh, if it is organic, if it is natural. It’s exciting for us, because that is what we do.”

Other favorites at Jordan’s include tuna from Honolulu. It is a sushi-grade tuna that is used for the Tuna Tartare and the Broiled Tuna. The amazing Grilled Caesar, with a romaine heart put right on the broiler, includes an authentic Caesar dressing taught to Naftal by his father. It is drizzled with the dressing, pignoli nuts, local baby heirloom tomatoes and shaved asiago cheese.

Dance Marathon — Wellington High School held assemblies last month to promote its Dance Marathon, set for March 11. The school hopes to raise $25,000, doubling last year’s amount. Donations help patients at Shands Children’s Hospital. Circus Arts Camp — Wellington hosted a Winter Break Sports & Circus Arts Day Camp from Monday, Dec. 28 through Saturday, Jan. 2. The Aerial Trapeze Academy taught kids to perform moves on the trapeze, lyra (hoop) and aerial silks. Kids got a chance to juggle, clown around and more.
