Research confirms what many parents instinctively feel when they don’t like to spank their children, but they don’t know what else to do.

The latest research from Dr. Murray Straus at the Family Research Laboratory affirms that spanking teaches children to use acts of aggression and violence to solve their problems. It only teaches and perpetuates more violence, the very thing that our society is so concerned about. This research further shows

BE KIND BUT FIRM Another frustrating situation where parents tend to spank is when your child hasn’t listened to your repeated requests to behave.

Sometimes parents lose it because they are under a lot of stress. Dinner is boiling over, the kids are fighting, the phone is ringing and your child drops the can of peas then you lose it.

If you can’t leave the situation, then mentally step back and count to ten.

TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF Parents are more prone to use spanking when they haven’t had any time to themselves and they feel depleted and hurried. So, it is

GIVE CHOICES Giving your child a choice is an effective alternative to spanking. If she is playing with her food at the table, ask, “Would you like to stop playing with your food, or would you like to leave the table?” If the child continues to play with her food, you use kind but firm action by helping her down from the table. Then tell her that she can return to the table when she is ready to eat her food without playing in it.

USE LOGICAL CONSEQUENCES Consequences that are logically related to the behavior help teach children responsibility. For example, your child breaks a neighbor’s window and you punish him by spanking him. What does he learn about the situation? He may learn to never do that again, but he also learns that he needs to hide his mistakes, blame it on someone else,

wash his car several times to repay the cost of repairing the window.

What does the child learn in this situation? He learns that that mistakes are an inevitable part of life and it isn’t so important that he made the mistake, but that he take responsibility to repair the mistake.

The focus is taken off the mistake and put on taking responsibility for repairing it. The child feels no anger or revenge toward his parent. And, most importantly, the child’s selfesteem is not damaged.

DO MAKE-UPS When children break agreements, parents tend to want to punish them. An alternative is to have your child do a make-up. A makeup is something that people do to put themselves back into integrity with the person that they broke the agreement with. home. His father requested that they not leave the house after midnight. The boys broke their agreement. The father was angry and punished them by telling them that they couldn’t have a sleep-over for two months. Larry and his friends became angry, sullen and uncooperative as the result of the punishment. The father realized what he had done. He apologized for punishing them and told them how betrayed he felt and discussed with the boys the importance of keeping their word. He then asked the boys for a make-up. They decided to cut the lumber that the father needed in the backyard. The boys became excited and enthusiastic about the project and later kept their word on future sleep-overs.

WITHDRAW FROM CONFLICT Children who sass parents may provoke a parent to slap. In this situation, it is best if you withdraw from the situation immediately. Do not leave the room in anger or in defeat. Calmly say, “I’ll be in the next room when you want to talk more respectfully.”

USE KIND BUT FIRM ACTION Instead of smacking an infant’s hand or bottom when she touches something she isn’t supposed to, kindly but firmly pick her up and take her to the next room. Offer her a toy or another item to distract her and say, “You can try

again later.”You may have to take her out several times if she is persistent.

INFORM CHILDREN AHEAD OF TIME A child’s temper tantrum can easily set a parent off.

Children frequently throw tantrums when they feel uninformed or powerless in a situation. Instead of telling your child he has to leave his friend’s house at a moments notice, tell him that you will be leaving in five minutes.

This allows the child to complete what he was in the process of doing.

Aggression is an obvious form of perpetuating violence in society. A more subtle form of this is spanking because it takes its toll on a child’s self-esteem, dampening his enthusiasm and causing him to be rebellious and uncooperative. Consider for a moment the vision of a family that knows how to creatively solve their problems without using force. The alternatives are limitless and the results are calmer parents who feel more supported. !

Summertime is a great time to hit the “reset” button on unhealthy habits picked up during the school year!

Getting kids to enjoy healthy foods requires practice and lots of patience. And nothing speeds the process along faster than when it’s fun! Engage your child in hands-on “snack-tivities”, and let them make their own snacks!

KEEP A SNACKING SCHEDULE “I’m bored!” Unless you’re Mary Poppins, keeping our kids entertained 24/7 is impossible. And while it’s 8

tempting to give in to frequent requests for snacks and treats, eating to cure boredom is habit-forming!

Instead, provide structure and organization by creating a daily snack schedule, and teach them healthy habits, such as moderation and self-control!

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE! Looking for something fun to do outdoors with your kids? Take them berry picking! Aside from being a fun family bonding experience, picking berries – or any fruit – empowers children with a sense of accomplishment. Building positive associations with healthy foods helps

build acceptance – and healthy habits that last!

AVOID THE CONCESSION Getting out and enjoying the dog days of summer usually involves trips to the beach, the pool, the park – etc.! Concession and vending snacks are often high in price, and low in nutrition!

Pack a nutritional punch by planning and packing snacks “to go” – and save your money for gas!

STOCK UP ON FRESH FRUIT Take advantage of the most bountiful time of the year! Peaches, berries and melons are at their peak!

From fruit salads to smoothies, fruit is a must-have staple for healthy summer snacking. And don’t forget – you can freeze fresh fruit, too SUMMER DAYS & CRUDITÉS Getting kids to eat their veggies has always been a challenge. But don’t give up! Summer is an excellent time to revisit this important stage of healthy habit building by presenting kids with a variety of colorful seasonal vegetables. Try filling a muffin tin with a variety of fresh veggies, and a couple healthy dips like hummus or low fat ranch. Make it fun, and they will come!

WHOLE GRAIN PASTAS A cup of whole grain pasta salad can be a nutritious and easy snack, and with a little creativity – it can be lots of fun, too! Have a batch of cooked pasta on hand, and let your kids “make-their-own”! Fresh veggies, cheeses, fruit and nuts are just some of the ingredients that will make this a “win-win” snack!

FREEZER FUN Looking for an alternative to full fat ice cream or sugar-laden frozen ices? Engage your kids in a super fun “snack-tivity” with freezer fruit pops! Use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes from a 1-inch-thick slice of seedless watermelon, insert a popsicle stick into the bottom and place on tin foil and pop it in the freezer!

BE PICKY WITH PROCESSED SNACKS There is a huge assortment of “grab-and-go” snacks available on the market today. While a convenient option to homemade snacks, processed snacks are often high in sugar, salt and fat! When stocking up, check the label! Aim for snacks that contain less than 20% daily value for sodium and fat, and less than 7 grams of sugar per serving!

HEALTHY DRINK It’s important to keep our children hydrated during the hot summer months, but instead of reaching for the faucet, our kids reach for the fridge. Too many sweetened beverages not only fail to properly hydrate our kids, but add a lot of empty calories that add up! Limit sweet drinks to 6-8 oz./day, and point them to the best source: Water! !

HELEN’S TIPS FOR DIET AND BREASTFEEDING Good news mamas! There aren’t really any foods you need to avoid when breastfeeding. Some strong flavors, like garlic and curry, can show up in your breast milk. This can cause your baby to refuse to nurse, but other babies will like the new tastes. There is some evidence that your baby will be more open to new flavors and less picky later in life when exposed to a variety of flavors early. However, there are some foods (and drinks) that you may want to enjoy in small amounts:

Fish: Shark, swordfish and mackerel often contain high levels of mercury.

Mercury is a heavy metal that can affect your baby’s brain and nervous system, since what you eat ends up in your breast milk, it’s best to limit your intake on these types of fish.

Caffeine: If you want a cup of Joe, go ahead and enjoy it! A small amount of caffeine will show up in your breast milk so watch your baby for wakefulness and reduce your coffee intake if you notice any changes in their behavior.

Alcohol: You can enjoy a glass of wine without guilt. The brewer’s yeast in beer can even increase your milk supply! If you enjoy a little too much, you might want to pump and dump.

If you are safe to drive, you are safe to breastfeed.

TOBI’S TOP TIPS FOR PUMPING IN THE BATHROOM Tip 1: The most ideal public bathroom is the individual “family” bathrooms. It will give you the most privacy and they tend to be bigger so you have more room.

If they don’t have the “family” style

available try to use a handicap stall, the privacy is the same as the other stalls but it will give you more space!

Tip 2: Always have a small towel or blanket on you so that if they don’t have a shelf available next to you, you can safely and still be hygienic place your pump on the ground so you’re not trying to balance it on your lap which is definitely not relaxing!

Tip 3: Bring ear buds! Have some relaxing music on your phone and once you put your ear buds in all the noise around you disappears and you can relax! !

AFTER SCHOOL Find the perfect fit In a city where creativity is king, there are an endless amount of after school activities to keep your children on their toes, in the water and scoring goals.

In this special issue of Family Living Magazine we have compiled some of the

best after-school resources on Florida’s Suncoast that are sure to extend their school day in enriching and creative ways.

How do you decide what’s the best after-school activity for your child?

How do you find a good program?

How to Choose After you have an idea of the possibilities, talk with your child about what he’s interested in.

Give him some options that complement his interests — an artistic child might enjoy a ceramics class, while a boisterous one can work off energy dancing or playing a vigorous sport. But don’t overlook what might seem like unlikely matches. Shy children often enjoy expressing themselves on stage in a drama class; fidgeters can find a way to focus through martial arts.

Once you’ve narrowed the options down, visit them while they are in session so you can get a real idea about the environment, the staff, and the program.

When you visit, look for: 1. At least one adult for every 12

children — in younger groups, the ratio should be closer to one to 10.

2. Whether there any “hidden”costs,

such as for uniforms, costumes or other equipment.

3. Friendly, enthusiastic staff. Are they certified or otherwise expert in their field? Ask for references and check them.

4. A space that is clean, safe and

spacious enough for the activity. Is there enough equipment and other resources for everyone?

activity appear well organized and supervised?

Wondering how many days a week your 2nd grader should be practicing the guitar? Searching for good ideas for after-school programs for your 10 year old? Use the following guidelines to steer your decisions — but remember that you know your child’s maturity and temperament best.

Kindergarten Keep your kindergartner’s afterschool life simple and free — one or two after-school activities a week are more than enough. Wait until they have adjusted to the daily school routine. Then find an extracurricular that involves their creative and/or physical side, such as an art, dance or music program.

Grade 1 Balance your 1st grader’s schedule with play dates, playground visits and one or two days of an afterschool activity per week. Best bets are noncompetitive sports and other physical activities since this is around the age when your child is starting to get a grip on the abilities of their own body. Plus, after being in school all day they need an outlet to play and run.

Grade 2 Get your child involved in choosing extracurricular.s They’ll probably tell you what they’d like to do anyway!

Steer them towards activities that they do not get to do at school, whether it’s sports like swimming or skating, computers or art and music lessons.

Many kids start learning piano or violin around this age. Make sure your child has at least one or two days free a week for alone time, which they are starting to need to unwind.

Grade 3 After sitting all day in a classroom, your 3rd grader needs to move and socialize after school. Team sports are a great choice — now they are old enough to remember and follow rules and can handle losing (though they are still not ready for anything ultracompetitive).

Other good choices are activities that use and develop fine motor skills, such as painting and drawing, sewing or learning to play an instrument.

Grade 4 Try to get your 4th grader involved in one or two extracurricular activities that they are good at and love doing.

It will build confidence and help them manage stress, which is key at this age when cliques and social pressure in school are beginning to build. Another thing that’s growing is their pile of homework, so make sure they have adequate time to complete their work without having to stay up late. Set limits on seeing friends and activities if they are often crabby and irritable, if their grades drop, if they have trouble sleeping, complain of mysterious illnesses, or if they shows other signs of stress such as overeating.

Grade 5 Over-scheduling is a problem you and your child will probably face this year.

Your 5th grader is full of energy for

everything and wants to spend all their time participating in activities and hanging out with friends. To ensure they are completing their schoolwork and not becoming burnt out, you should make sure they have two free afternoons a week. While you’re at it, block out a once-a-week family time that you and your child stick to so they remember that family is a priority.

Middle School Try to steer your middle schooler toward activities that reinforce learning and get them away from the TV. On average, middle schoolers spend an equal amount of time every week watching TV and socializing with friends — about 20-25 hours apiece. To improve academic performance, encourage your preteen to spend time volunteering, joining school clubs like band, chess or foreign language, or to sign up for extracurriculars with a leadership element, such as the school newspaper or student council. It will help them feel more connected to the school community while forging friendships based in common interests and experiences. As always, keep an eye out for signs that they are not overextending themselves with afterschool commitments. As a general rule, they should be spending fewer than 20 hours a week participating in their afterschool activities. !
