Since opening its doors in 1964, Florida Atlantic has been the place “Where Tomorrow Begins” — and that spirit of innovation and opportunity continues to drive our success today. As one of only 21 universities nationwide recognized as both a Carnegie R1 top-tier research institution and “Opportunity University” for student access and post-graduation earnings, we are improving lives through discovery, academic excellence, and social mobility.
As you’ll see in the following pages, these aren’t our only accolades. Florida Atlantic is ranked as a Top 100 Public University by U.S. News & World Report and as one of 25 “Best-in-Class Colleges” by Washington Monthly.
As a first-choice university for students around the state and nation, Florida Atlantic received a record 57,000 applications, and we welcomed more than 4,300 new Owls this fall. They are our most academically competitive freshman class ever. We live in a special place, and Florida Atlantic is leveraging its geographic location to drive innovation and economic impact across the state. We’re also collaborating with community partners and investing in critical areas such as health care, the life sciences, ocean science, and artificial intelligence to strengthen workforce pipelines.
I was raised in Palm Beach County and I’ve always thought of Florida Atlantic as my Hometown University. That’s why, during my time in the state legislature, I championed several projects that helped make it the academic powerhouse it is today, including securing critical funding to establish the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and the Engineering East building, and supporting the university's ocean energy initiative.
I hope that, like me, you don’t just think of Florida Atlantic as a university in your hometown, but as your Hometown University — and I invite you to engage with us. Join us for a game, take in a lecture, or see a play. Better yet, hire, mentor, and invest in our students. Because when you do, you’re shaping the future of Florida.

Florida Atlantic University has quietly become one of the country’s most effective engines of upward mobility.

On a bright October day in 1964, Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the United States, declared Florida Atlantic University officially open. For a sitting U.S. President to officiate the dedication of a new regional university was most unusual – but Florida Atlantic was no ordinary institution.

A Pioneer in Distance Learning
Florida Atlantic aimed to be a “new kind of university,” one that would harness broadcast technology to “beam” classes to students wherever they might be. Today, the door to higher education is open wider than ever before through the Center for Online and Continuing Education, which was recognized with the 2025 Eduventures Innovation Award for its pioneering advancements in online student success.

“ So I think it is time now … for a new revolution in education in America.“
PRESIDENT LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON

Before it housed a Top 100 Public University, Florida Atlantic's Boca Raton campus was a bustling military hub. The Boca Raton Army Air Field was one of the few radar training schools operated by the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. It was the first base to specialize in airborne radar, a technology that played a decisive role in the Allied victory.
Florida has the lowest in-state tuition in the nation and Owls graduate with 10% less student loan debt than the national average.
First-generation Student Success Affordable Excellence
Nearly 30% of Florida Atlantic students are the first in their families to graduate from college, and research shows that this group of students faces unique challenges on their path to a degree. The Office of First-Generation Student Success gives these students a helping hand by providing academic support, advising, financial assistance, and scholarships, mentorship, and the “First and Proud” student organization.
Additionally, the Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars Program is addressing barriers to success for first-generation students by providing scholarships and support to help them graduate debt-free in four years or less.
“ “
Many of our students come from low-income and firstgeneration backgrounds, and college provides a way for them to transcend cyclical poverty and diminish the wealth gap for future generations. We carry a distinct responsibility to assist our students through their academic journey and help them develop practical life skills to utilize throughout their lifetime.
TAMSYN FRENCH DIRECTOR OF FINANCIAL AID AND STUDENT SUCCESS

As one of only 21 institutions in the nation to earn Carnegie R1 top-tier research status and be named an Opportunity University for creating greater student access to college and higher earnings after graduation, Florida Atlantic is advancing discovery and innovation, while prioritizing student success, to ensure that all students thrive.

Florida Atlantic launched the nation’s first undergraduate ocean engineering program in 1965. Today, the university – especially its Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute –continues to develop state-of-the-art technologies for marine conservation and national defense, and drive innovative research that protects our oceans, powers our future and supports coastal economies.

Florida Atlantic’s Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC) is a U.S. Department of Energy-recognized center, focused on the safe and responsible use of marine renewable energy from the Gulf Stream.
SNMREC recently received an $800,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to help enhance the nation’s competitiveness in marine energy, boost domestic manufacturing, and create jobs while contributing to clean energy objectives.
Professor of biological sciences Stephen Kajiura, Ph.D., is not only one of the world’s foremost shark experts – he’s also regularly featured in National Geographic’s SharkFest programming.

Michael Twardowski, Ph.D., research professor at FAU Harbor Branch, received $11 million from the U.S. Office of Naval Research to develop a next-generation sensor that will continue a legacy of research in oceanic bioluminescence. Bioluminescence research could serve as an important tool in protecting our nation's coastlines.
FAU Harbor Branch’s Marine Biomedical and Biotechnology Research scientists study natural chemicals from deep sea corals and sponges to develop treatments to antibiotic-resistant infections and aggressive cancers.
The Florida legislature selected Florida Atlantic to house its Office of Ocean Economy, an initiative to better understand, support and grow the ocean and coastal-based industries that drive jobs, investment, and innovation.
FAU Harbor Branch works with major defense contractors and the U.S. Department of War to better understand the oceanic environment in which the Navy operates — and the biological, chemical, and physical processes that regulate that environment.
FAU Harbor Branch’s Marine Mammal Rescue Team is on call 24-7 to provide help to marine mammals in distress, alongside stranding partners and the National Marine Fisheries Service.
Florida Atlantic received a $700,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to support research aimed at advancing water quality monitoring in Lake Okeechobee, one of Florida’s most critical bodies of fresh water. The findings will help guide the development of future regulations that consider the risks associated with contaminants in aquatic ecosystems.

From tapping ancient food sources to creating innovative tools, researchers at FAU Harbor Branch are developing new aquaculture techniques to meet the growing demand for sustainable seafood. Megan Davis, Ph.D., is internationally recognized for her work on queen conch restoration and conservation. She also conducts research on sea vegetable aquaculture, a sustainable crop for coastal restoration and culinary dishes.
