The week reflected back through fabulously funny eyes

I MEAN, SERIOUSLY. If you’re going to clog up my inbox, and try to con me into some shady business scheme, at least have the courtesy to have a somewhat-legit looking logo/ad/template. Not some wonky print shop sketchy spam you made in your basement in Mumbai. WHEN THE WINDS BLOWS. Omg! These people on the weather channel get such ridiculous boners when a tropical storm forms, and these tropical storm/hurricane names from a 1954 Iowa church book club, Earl?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT OBAMA! Thank you for making my life better than it was years ago, for finally proactively beginning the process for me to always know I can get health insurance, despite preexisting conditions: For validating my dignity and pride in being a gay man and feeling equal in this country: For being the picture of grace under pressure, despite the haters and the naysayers and those that wouldn’t give you the green light to enact more progressive, inclusive political platforms simply because of the color of your skin. I can’t wait to see what adventures in life have in store for you. HOW TO SELL DRUGS! Oh my God, what is up with some of these commercials these days? Viberzi for sudden explosive diarrhea. Gag! IS IT HAPPY HOUR? Oh please, alcoholism was something that was invented in the 1980s, to sell magazines, along with parenting and happiness! THE GOOD OLE DAYS. I miss television from the old days, when a TV series were either 30 or 60 minutes long and were on once a week. Whenever I embark upon trying something new, I feel like I’m investing a huge amount of time and sweat into something. NEW REALITY TV SHOW. Just saying, a Donald Trump implosion, meltdown, disintegration into a burning wig will be a huuuuuge world event of historical proportions! A SLOW NEWS DAY. Zika virus in Miami, but porn is the biggest health epidemic facing the nation and we need a wall to block Mexico. E.T. phone home your mother ship is arriving. MY THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK. Every day simple acts of kindness will reward you tenfold. Karma is always watching.

Random thoughts from social media and beyond this week

Vice President Joe Biden presided over his first wedding ceremony yesterday, which saw him officiating the marriage of two longtime gay White House employees. Mr. Biden posted the message: “Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys.” Channing Tatum to Play a Merman in Splash Remake. According to Variety, superstud Channing Tatum could be sporting a tail for the remake. Although Tatum’s chiseled (and shimmering) body will look flipping fantastic in scales, is it what audiences want? The short answer is an astounding HELL YES.

Justin Bieber was offered the role in an upcoming film called Uber Girl but won’t take the part unless a gay sex scene is removed, reported the NY Post. “He won’t take the part unless the sex scene with him and one of the male backup dancers is taken out of the final script.” Bieber has denied ever even reading the script.

Suicide Squad star Cara Delevingne has opened up about her same-sex relationship with her rumored fiancee Annie Clark says, “She is completely in love with her girlfriend, who she credits with changing her life.”

a Rep. Richard Hanna, Republican congressman from Upstate New York, has decided he’s with her: Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, reports, “He’s planning to vote for Clinton because Donald Trump is unfit to serve our party and cannot lead this country.” August 04, 2016

New York Grilled Cheese Defends Transgender Employee WILTON MANORS--On Tuesday July 26th, a patron of New York Grilled Cheese Co., Mary Bolda, took to the company’s Facebook Wall to let other potential customers know about the terrible service she had received from a certain “waiter” at the restaurant. As it turns out, that waiter was actually a waitress named Mia. Patrons at the restaurant at the time explained that the customer continually referred to Mia as “he” and “him,” shouting loudly and causing other customers to become so uncomfortable that they left to avoid the commotion. In response to Bolda’s review, another reviewer chimed in that while New York Grilled Cheese “was delicious,” she wouldn’t be going back because “they only have transgender restrooms.” In light of the recent remarks, owner Leor Barak took to social media himself to set the record straight sending a clear message that “the company culture at New York Grilled Cheese Co. is and always will be one of acceptance, equality, and support of our transgendered community and any other walk of life.” New York Grilled Cheese was one of the first restaurants in the state to implement a gender neutral bathroom both at their original location

in Wilton Manors, and at their newest location in Boca Raton. In his response Barak explains, “We are sorry to hear that you won’t be back simply because of that reason. We hope that one day you’ll change your mind about singling out transgendered folks… New York Grilled Cheese Co. is proud to support gender equality and we urge everyone to do the same.” He goes on to say, “We would never choose the revenue of an intolerant patron over the dignity of our employees.” New York Grilled Cheese will be sharing a LOVE MIA graphic and changing all their profile photos on social media to show their support of not only Mia, but also the entire transgender community. For those of us at the Florida Agenda, Mia is no stranger. Performing and winning the first place title at the last two Dancing with the South Florida Stars fundraising events, Mia Patryck is a talented dancer and pageant participant. She is said to be highly favored to win the Miss Florida F.I. Pageant this coming Monday, August 8, at the Deauville Beach Resort in Miami Beach. nn

Despite Rumors, No Memorial at Pulse Nightclub ORLANDO—Pulse Nightclub, the site of the largest mass shooting in recent US history, will not be reopening as a memorial to the 49 people murdered there. Rumors had been rampant last week citing an Instagram posting on its OnePULSE account which stated that the group would “contribute to the creation of a permanent memorial at the existing site of Pulse Nightclub.” A subsequent post on Fackbook stated “You heard right! We will be reopening Pulse as a memorial for the 49 lives who were taken from us on June 12th.” That post was later taken down. 6

August 04, 2016

It was later replaced with a post that said, “OOPS! Looks like we got the media’s pulse racing with an inadvertent Instagram posting that incorrectly stated the Pulse Nightclub was reopening as a memorial,” said a statement attributed to Pulse nightclub, in Orlando. A spokesman for OnePulse confirmed “Pulse is NOT reopening as a memorial.” The massacre occurred at Pulse on June 12, in which 53 guests were injured in addition to the 49 killed. After a three-hour standoff, the gunman was eventually killed by police.

Supreme Court says VA school can block transgender teen from boys room RICHMOND, VA (AP) - A Virginia school board can block a transgender male from using the boys restroom when school starts next month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Wednesday. In a 5-3 decision, the high court put on hold a lower court ruling ordering the school board to allow Gavin Grimm to use the bathroom that matches his gender identity. The school board is expected to ask the justices to further intervene in the case later this month. Grimm, who was born female but identifies as male, argues that the school board’s policy requiring students to use either the restroom that corresponds with their biological gender or a private, single-stall restroom violates Title IX, a federal law that bars sex discrimination in schools. Josh Block, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union who’s representing Grimm, said he’s disappointed that the teen will have to begin another school year being “stigmatized and isolated from the rest of his peers just because he is transgender.” The school board has argued that forcing it to let Grimm use the boys restroom raises privacy concerns and may cause some parents to pull their children out of school. The Supreme Court’s ruling says that if the justices agree to hear Grimm’s case, the order will remain on hold until the court makes a final ruling. If they deny the school board’s petition for review, an order requiring the board to let Grimm use the boys bathroom will be reinstated. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with Grimm in April, saying the federal judge who previously dismissed Grimm’s Title IX discrimination claim ignored a U.S. Department of Education rule that transgender students in public schools must be allowed to use restrooms that correspond with their gender identity. The court reinstated Grimm’s Title IX claim and sent it back to the district court for further consideration. nn

INTERNATIONAL UK court rules health service can fund HIV prevention drug

LONDON (AP) - Britain’s High Court has ruled that the state-funded health service is responsible for paying for an HIV-prevention drug that has been called a “game changer” in the fight against AIDS. The National AIDS Trust charity argued that health authorities have an ethical duty to fund the pre-exposure prophylaxis drug (PrEP), which reduces the risk of becoming infected with HIV. The health service argued that it was not responsible for preventing sexually transmitted diseases, because public health measures fall to local government. nn

Federal judge grills GOP lawyers over need for bathroom law

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A federal judge lobbed tough questions at GOP lawyers Monday as he considered whether to block a North Carolina legal measure governing transgender bathroom access, asking pointedly how the law was making people safer. U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder heard oral arguments on transgender plaintiff’s request for a preliminary injunction blocking parts of the law that limits protections for LGBT people. “How does this law make bathrooms and changing rooms safer in North Carolina?” the judge asked Butch Bowers, an attorney for Republican Gov. Pat McCrory, a defendant in legal challenges to the law. The state’s Republican leaders argue the law is needed to protect privacy and safety by keeping men out of women’s restrooms. Transgender residents challenging the law argue that it’s a solution in search of a problem. nn

CHARLOTTE’S GAY PRIDE FESTIVAL TO GET EXTRA SECURITY

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) - Officials in Charlotte have declared the city’s gay pride festival later this month is an extraordinary event that requires extra security. City officials say the decision allows them to ban backpacks and regular items that can be used as weapons, such as chains and box cutters at the Aug. 20-21 event. It also allows police more latitude to stop and search people. The decision comes less than two months after 49 people were killed in a shooting at The Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Charlotte passed the extraordinary event ordinance in 2012 before the Democratic National Convention. It has been used for Bank of America and Duke Energy shareholder meetings and NFL playoff games. This is the first time it has been used for the gay pride festival. nn

U OF L DENTAL SCHOOL CONTRACTS FOR NEW HIV/AIDS FUNDING

LOUISVILLE, KY (AP) - The University of Louisville School of Dentistry is using $2 million in federal funding to provide dental care for people with HIV or AIDS. The university says the funding was awarded to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and contracted to the dental school. The two-year grant will allow for oral health care services for underserved people with HIV and provide education and training for providers. The university said in a news release that dental care is among the most common unmet needs for people with HIV/AIDS in Kentucky. The funding is through the Department for Public Health HIV/AIDS Services Branch, Ryan White Part B program. The dental school first received funding through the program for a six-month pilot in January 2014 and last year performed more than 6,000 procedures for nearly 600 HIV/AIDS patients. nn

ACLU: Man denied survivor benefits after husband’s death

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A civil rights group said Tuesday it is seeking Social Security survivor benefits for a Louisiana man who legally married his husband in California before a 2015 Supreme Court ruling established a nationwide right to same-sex marriage. The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana said Gerald Allen Beem and William Floyd Conley had lived together since 1982. Louisiana residents since 1997, they were legally married in California in 2014. Conley died in February 2015, before the Supreme Court decision. The ACLU said in a news release that the Social Security Administration in Lafayette denied benefits to Beem even after the court decision. nn

Tentative trial date set for suspended Alabama chief justice

MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) - A court has set a tentative date for the trial of suspended Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore. An order released Monday by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary says Moore’s trial on judicial ethics charges will begin Sept. 28. Moore opposes a move by prosecutors to have him ousted without a trial. Moore is a Christian who opposes samesex marriage. He is accused of wrongly issuing an order in defiance of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that effectively legalized gay marriage nationwide. nn

Judge keeps block on religious objection law during appeal

JACKSON, MS (AP) - A federal judge has denied a request by Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant to allow a law that protects religious objections to same-sex marriage to take effect during an appeal. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves, who blocked the law hours before it would have taken effect July 1, made the ruling Monday. Bryant and the director of Mississippi’s Department of Human Services are appealing Reeves’ original decision. They could now ask the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to let the law take effect. nn Assembled through Associated Press August 04, 2016

Trump Campaign Imploding as Insults Escalate

n

There is usually a lull after the Republicans and the Democrats host their respective conventions, as the nation exhales in unison after the excesses of politics put on their ugliest faces to signal the latest national Presidential campaign has begun. As with most things reflecting the dueling organizations representing Republican Donald Trump and Democrat BY Hillary ClinRICHARD ton, nothing is ever HACK quite what one would expect. At a time when Trump could have most benefited by keeping his normal absurdities to a minimum, he seemed to feel compelled to spew non-sequiturs on the national stage, directing them for the most part at Khizr Khan, the Muslim attorney who lost his son in the Iraq War fighting as a soldier in the US Army. Speaking over the weekend to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos Trump questioned why Khan’s wife Ghazala wasn’t allowed to talk. “His wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there,” Trump said. “She had nothing to say. She probably—maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say.” (In an editorial in The 8

August 04, 2016

Washington Post, Ghazala Khan said her emotions kept her from speaking.) It was a statement that brought cries of outrage from the GOP. Even long-time supporter Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey called Donald Trump’s statements over the Khan family “inappropriate.” “We need to honor their sacrifice for our country and we need to honor their son’s sacrifice for our country,” Christie said. “And to focus on anything other than that, to me, is missing the point. That’s what we should be doing, and any comments that we’re making publicly or privately should be with that in mind.” To many this seems to be a watershed moment with even Republicans saying “enough is enough” with reckless comments and gratuitous insults. Yet, The Donald isn’t even close to getting the message. That much is obvious in the Republican candidate’s refusal to endorse Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the GOP candidate as Representative of Wisconsin’s first Congressional District. The lack of endorsement is a grudge match that goes back to the time when Ryan refused to endorse Trump as the GOP presidential candidate. So too with Trump’s lack of endorsement for Arizona Senator John McCain, who is running for a fifth consecutive term. “It is time for Donald Trump to set the example for our country and the future of the Republican

Party,” McCain said. “While our Party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us,” McCain said. The Senator added a personal “thank you” to the Khan’s for immigrating to America. “We’re a better country because of you. And you are certainly right; your son was the best of America, and the memory of his sacrifice will make us a better nation -- and he will never be forgotten.” As the fallout continued over Trump’s behavior, even his own campaign manager joined the conversation. New York Times reporter John Harwood said on Twitter that he learned from an ally of Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort that Manafort is no longer “challenging” the candidate, and that staff morale has plunged, described now as “suicidal.” CNN reported that Trump campaign staffers “feel like they

are wasting their time.” At a time when it appeared that things could not get worse for the Republican candidate, President Barack Obama spoke out on Tuesday in a plea for Republicans to think seriously about the damage their candidate is doing in the world political arena. At the White House, Obama castigated Trump on Tuesday as “unfit” and “woefully unprepared” to serve as president. He challenged Republicans to withdraw their support for their party’s nominee, declaring “There has to come a point at which you say ‘Enough.’” Extremely uncharacteristic of a sitting President. But unusual times call for unusual measures. This is one of those times.

CREEP OF THE WEEK

Donald Trump BY D’ANNE WITOWSKI

n

Donald Trump made history at the Republican National Convention by daring to utter a string of five letters: LGBTQ. More specifically, he said, “Only weeks ago, in Orlando, Florida, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist. This time, the terrorist targeted the LGBTQ community. No good, and we’re going to stop it. I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology. Believe me.” And people applauded, which prompted Trump to say, “I have to say, as a Republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said. Thank you.” The moment was kind of surreal. It was also completely at odds with the Republican Party platform which even GOP-apologists, the Log Cabin Republicans, said was the most anti-gay in history. So does Trump’s stated support of LGBTQ people negate his party’s platform? Has Trump gone rogue? Um, no. And also, no. Let’s take a close look at what he said. What he’s vowing to protect LGBTQ people from is “a hateful foreign ideology.” In other words, he’s talking about “radical Islam,” and I believe that the applause he received was more anti-Is10

August 04, 2016

lam rather than pro-gay. Even if he hadn’t referenced foreign terrorists, giving LGBTQ people a shout out after the horrific Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando is literally the least he could do. It’s hardly a courageous stance. Don’t forget that Trump isn’t pro-gay. He isn’t proLGBTQ rights. For one thing, he did not acknowledge the hateful anti-gay ideology that exists right here in America. If anything, he pledged his support to that ideology by selecting Mike Pence, a man with a long and storied anti-LGBTQ record, as his veep. Trump himself has said that he doesn’t support marriage equality and that he would seek to appoint Supreme Court justices that would undo that landmark decision. Granted, he changes his mind about almost everything on a rotating basis — he’s nothing if not inconsistent. But I highly doubt that he’s all of a sudden gonna be the marshal in a Pride parade. Conservatives are, by and large, supporting Trump because they want a Republican, even a bat-shit crazy one, appointing Supreme Court justices. That’s not to say Trump didn’t anger some with his LGBTQ reference in his convention speech. Alexandra DeSanctis, writing for the National Review,

lamented that Trump threw conservatives “under the bus.” “Never has the party or its members questioned the right to life — or the very humanity — of LGBT people in the way Trump not-so-subtly implied,” she writes. Lol. Wut? I’m not sure how closely DeSanctis has been following the decades-long assault on LGBT people and their families being waged by the GOP, but she apparently has a very different definition of “humanity” than I do. The right to love, to share a consensual sexual relationship with another human being, to marry, to parent, the right to exist rather than be declared crazy and dangerous and subjected to humiliating “therapy” and punitive laws — the GOP is against all of those things. It’s in their god damn platform. While anti-gay conservatives no doubt bristled at Trump’s remarks and pro-gay conservatives cheered, the fact of the matter is Trump is a phony who will say anything to get elected. A Trump presidency would put the brakes on progressive momentum that has shepherded so many LGBT civil rights gains. Sadly Americans have a short historical memory — one need only look at Trump’s Make America Great Again slogan for proof. He’s a man looking backwards. nn

OPINION

WHO IS? Bisexual Bisexuality skyrocketed in the last century, a study revealed what we all knew was true (or hoped was true): The percentage of Americans that reported same-sex experiences have doubled since the early 1990s. Bisexuality is blossoming at a rapid rate, and we couldn’t be happier. The numbers were found by the General Social Survey (GSS), a survey that’s been conducted since 1972. These reports specifically found that the percentage of guys reporting male sexual partners has doubled from 1990 to 2014. The study also indicates that the proportion of American adults who believe same-sex activity “wasn’t wrong at all” went up from 11 percent in 1973 to 13 percent in 1990 and 49 percent in 2014. The number of U.S. adults who had at least one same-sex partner since age 18 doubled between the early 1990s and early 2010s (4.5 percent to 8.2 percent for men.) Bisexual behavior increased from 3.1 percent to 7.7 percent, accounting for much of the rise, with little consistent change in those having sex exclusively with same-sex partners. So why have the numbers doubled? According to coauthor Ryne Sherman said, “Millennials are markedly more accepting of same-sex behavior than GenXers were at the same age – but then, so are most adults. The change is primarily one of time period, where all adults shifted in their attitudes.” nn –Kevin Broady

OPINION DR. DURRELL’S SPIRITUAL PRESCRIPTIONS

[

WHAT WOULD JESUS SAY ABOUT LESBIAN AND GAY FOLK?

By Rev.

Is it a sin to be gay? Durrell “Sin” means to miss the mark (an archery & huntWatkins ing metaphor). To “be” anything is a matter of ontology (of “is-ness”). So to discover that one is something and to be honest about it can never be missing the mark. Self-discovery and expressing one’s truth with integrity is hitting the bull’s eye! Human sexuality is one of many aspects that are integrated into the wholeness of one’s being. Not only do I not believe it is a sin to be gay, I

believe being gay is a blessing. Did Jesus condemn homosexuality? Jesus condemned precious little. One of the few things that he did condemn was the tendency of religious people to participate in condemnation! Jesus seemed to have a great deal of patience with almost everything other than selfrighteous people who tried to enforce religious rules in a way to oppress or control others. There were even a few times when Jesus seemed sympathetic to same-gender love. When did Jesus seem to be okay with gay people? In the 8th chapter of Matthew’s gospel (and the story is repeated in the 7th chapter of Luke’s gospel), Jesus heals a centurion’s servant. The original hearers of that story would have assumed that the servant was the centurion’s lover. From what we know of 1st century Roman culture, we know that such relationships were not uncommon. And for a person of such high rank to be so concerned about a servant that he would approach a faith healer of lower status in a

PAUL BERGE

n

In a quarter century of ministry, there are a few questions that I’ve been asked hundreds of times. For gay Christians struggling to embrace their sexual identity, the questions are often about what Jesus would say about their sexual orientation. I’ll share three of these common questions and my responses now.

desperate attempt to help his servant suggests an intimacy far greater than one would expect between a military officer and his “servant.” The Greek text of one of the two times the story is told in the bible even uses a word that often was used to suggest a lover. How did Jesus respond to the centurion? He praised his faith! The samegender relationship was not condemned or even questioned. Additionally, Jesus was friendly with a nontraditional family. Mary, Martha and Lazarus lived together and were among Jesus’ dearest friends. They claimed to be siblings, but it would have been highly unusual for three adult siblings to live together and none of them have spouses or children. If they were all single, that was an alternative arrangement that Jesus didn’t condemn. It is also possible that Mary and Martha (as closeted couples have done in every age) were a couple and simply claimed to be related to avoid suspicion. The single Lazarus living with two women brings to mind the time in college that I lived with two lesbians who were a couple (three queer people sharing a life together). I wouldn’t be surprised if Mary, Martha, and Lazarus had a similar arrangement. In any case, they weren’t a typical 1st century patriarchal family with children; they were a non-traditional family in some sense, and they were part of Jesus’ family of choice. I can think of other examples, but the point is that Jesus wasn’t in the condemnation business and in fact, he showed great compassion and understanding for a variety of differences. nn Rev. Durrell Watkins, M.A., M.Div., D.Min. is the Senior Minister of Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale, “a different kind of church.”

Our Gay Olympians BY KEVIN BROADY

n

The 2016 Summer Olympic games returns to the arena in Rio Brazil, it could be the gayest Olympics yet. As we set and view the opening ceremonies on August 5th during primetime television, with millions of people watching, the LGBT community will have it’s own team competing. The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio will have a record number of publicly out lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex athletes. Outsports and LGBT historian Tony Scupham-Bilton have identified at least 41 out athletes who will compete, as well as three coaches. Several out athletes have also qualified for the Paralympics. There is a record 10 publicly out male athletes, though none are from the U.S. There is also one married couple, Helen Richardson-Walsh and Kate Richardson-Walsh, British field hockey players. At least three publicly out head coaches, Alyson Annan (the Dutch women’s field hockey team), Jill Ellis (head coach of the United States women’s soccer team) and Pia Sundhage (head coach of Sweden’s women’s soccer team). We expect the list to grow, as more athletes are predicted to be coming out during the games themselves. This often occurs on team sports in Europe or in lesser-know sports where athletes are out, but haven’t gotten much publicity. It with great Pride that we applaud our brothers and sisters from across the globe, competing and celebrating, as only LGBTs can. August 04, 2016

THE SECRET RECIPE

by Beth Suskin

QUINOA MEDLEY Publishers Plea: With the Olympics at our doorstep and a push to register for the Gay Games, we knew this week’s Secret Recipe had to be healthy. A couple of weeks ago, we dropped in on friends Leslie Cohen and Beth Suskin in Bay Harbor Islands (North Miami). We discussed the success of the Secret Recipe column, and I begged them to share. Beth is the cook and she let me raid her fridge and review her leftovers. I spotted a beautiful and healthy vegetable medley residing in Tupperware. I could tell that this wasn’t there long and a regular staple in the Cohen Suskin household. I don’t know the caloric values, but I can tell you that it checks off all the good eats measurements. There are healthy grains, fresh vegetables, natural oils and seasoning to satisfy. Ingredients: 1 cup Quinoa 1 red and 1 yellow pepper chopped 1 bag of Brussel sprouts or broccoli 1 handful dried cranberries 1 handful walnuts 1 T soy sauce 1 T curry powder 1 teaspoon salt to taste 1 T and 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 cup quinoa cooked as instructed on package Directions: Wash sprouts and cut them in half. South Africa’s Semenya challenges the sex divide in sports

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

n

STELLENBOSCH, SA (AP) - It seems the sports world just doesn’t know what to do with an athlete like South Africa’s Semenya challenges the sex divide in sports. The South African runner, and others like her, may present one of the greatest dilemmas for the perception of fairness in sports. Athletes like Semenya with intersex conditions - those that don’t conform to standard definitions of male or female - debunk any presumption that everyone fits neatly into those definitive categories in sports.

30

August 04, 2016

According to sports scientist Ross Tucker, “the biology isn’t quite as simple as that.” Semenya’s story is wellknown. As an 18-year-old newcomer at the 2009 world championships, she dominated the best women’s 800-meter runners. The gap between her and the defending world champion, who finished second, was astounding. Semenya celebrated by showing off her bicep muscles, stoking a controversy sparked hours earlier by revelations that she had undergone sex verification tests.

She was later sidelined for 11 months by world track’s governing body, the IAAF, and was only cleared to run again in 2010. She returned and won a silver medal in the 800 at the 2012 Olympics. Now 25 and the favorite for gold at the Rio Olympics, Semenya has been pursued by gender questions. But her case has never been about a man masquerading as a woman. Semenya is a woman because she says she’s a woman, was legally recognized at birth as female, treated as female, and

identified as female. Nobody can dictate to Semenya what gender she is. But since the 1950s, track and field has conducted sex testing to protect women’s competitions, initially using very basic sexual anatomy tests, and later using chromosomes. The tests didn’t work. Sex testing in sports should be about preventing an unfair advantage and, therefore, not about genitalia or chromosomes, which don’t make athletes run faster, jump higher or throw farther.

duce more of it, “there is nothing to say that testosterone is a male hormone.” “Dutee and Caster are (competing) with their own chemicals,” Kidd said. “They are fully in keeping with the Olympic spirit of being true to yourself and playing without doping. So why are they being castigated for that? I think it is so unfair.” Significantly, the IAAF accepted that its rules were basically discriminatory but were devised in search of a greater justice: fairness for women’s track and field. Opponents of the testosterone rule pointed to the natural advantages of other athletes that aren’t regulated, such as Usain Bolt’s fast-twitch muscle fibers, Michael Phelps’ big wingspan and former cyclist Miguel Indurain’s huge lung capacity. Harper, who supports the testosterone-limiting rules, explained that sports competitions don’t have categories for athletes with slow twitch, short arms or small lungs. But women’s sports are protected because if they weren’t, there would be serious ramifications for Olympic qualification. Chand Athletes like Semenya with intersex conditions - those - and by default, that don’t conform to standard definitions of male or Semenya female - debunk any presumption that everyone fits - won an interim neatly into those definitive categories in sports. decision nnnn last year in the Court What does, according to the of Arbitration for Sport case, It couldn’t be 10 nanomoles IAAF, is testosterone. but on a different reasoning. Joanna Harper, an expert on gender in sports and a consultant to the IAAF, thinks two female medalists at this year’s indoor world championships are probably intersex, and estimated 5-10 intersex athletes will compete in track and field at the Rio Olympics. Six years after Semenya was subjected to the IAAF tests, the lid was lifted on her situation in 2015. That’s when Indian sprinter Dutee Chand went to the Court of Arbitration for Sport - the highest court in world sports - and challenged the IAAF rules that regulated testosterone in hyperandrogenic women. The case forced the IAAF to publicly defend its rules that for hyperandrogenic women to be eligible to compete as women, their testosterone levels must be below a certain mark. It came down to a tiny measurement: how many nanomoles - a billionth of a mole - of testosterone a woman had per liter of blood.

witness for the IAAF when the case returns to court. The best evidence might be provided right now by Semenya. Since the testosterone regulations were shelved, Semenya has won every major 800-meter race she entered this season - running a personal best last month and the fastest time anywhere in seven years. Her best time this year is around four seconds faster than last year. Tucker predicted it. At the start of the season, when Semenya was competing at the South African national championships, Tucker posted a tweet saying she could break Jarmila Kratochvilova’s 33-year-old world record of 1:53.28 for the 800 this season. He thinks that without testosterone regulation, Semenya, a good athlete anyway, could become untouchable. “You need a person who comes along and has got all the attributes that would make an elite athlete, plus they have high testosterone. Then you will get a freakishly good athlete, and that’s the case with Semenya,” Tucker said. “If I was a woman 800-meter runner right now, I’d be looking to change careers. You can’t beat this advantage. It’s too big.” But Alice Dreger, a historian of medicine and science who has written about Semenya, poses a question with regard to the testosterone regulations and what the IAAF is trying to achieve with its proposed limits: “The data they have indicates it causes the athlete’s performance to drop precipitously, basically eliminating them from play,” Dreger said. “So what does it really mean to say ‘you can compete if you get these interventions,’ if the interventions mean you can’t really compete anymore?” Semenya, often media-shy, smiled and spoke easily with reporters at the nationals, saying she was starting to enjoy the sport again. “I haven’t had fun, you know, in a while,” she said. nn

YOU’RE ALREADY INVITED TO THE OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY

LATIFAH IS TAKING A GIRLS TRIP

I

f we have one complaint about Queen Latifah’s career, it’s that everything she does isn’t Set It Off. Not only is it our favorite film featuring her, it’s our favorite her: a butch, badass, bank-robbing lesbian. It was a cinematic middle finger to the media construction of ’90s “lesbian chic,” and if she had chosen never to act again after that movie, we’d revere her swagger for all of film history. And for the Queen’s upcoming comedy, Girls Trip, director Malcolm D. Lee (Barbershop: The Next Cut, and cousin to Spike) will reunite her with Set It Off co-star Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as the hilarious Regina Hall (Think Like a Man Too). The plot is a big secret at the moment, and it’s not due to hit theaters until summer of 2017, but we’re ready for this teamup right now. Note to filmmakers: If the ladies rob a bank or two along the way, we will not complain one bit.

ou’ve probably heard of the West Memphis Three, the young men convicted of murdering children in Arkansas in the mid ’90s. Their agonizing tale of injustice, one that included bizarre accusations of devil worship, was the subject of more than one documentary film and, ultimately, it brought them the exoneration they sought for so long. Well, now meet the San Antonio Four, four lesbians of color accused of raping two young girls, the case against them based on unreliable 32

testimony, elements of hetero male revenge, racism, “Satanic panic,” and the usual homophobia and misogyny. Filmmaker Deborah S. Esquenazi has been following the story and produced the documentary Southwest of Salem: The Story of The San Antonio Four, and it’s been on the film festival circuit for a while, with a theatrical release due in New York and Los Angeles in September. With enough exposure, it could turn into the next Making a Murderer, and possibly result in the justice they’ve been denied.

ear Christmas Movie Season, We know you’re on the way, even sooner than we think. The year is already more than half over, after all. But we’ve already decided which holidaythemed film we plan to see when the November onslaught hits: The Office Christmas Party. It’s not because of the premise, which involves a big office party to woo a big client, a client that will save the company from ruin. And it’s not because of the filmmakers, Josh Gordon and Will Speck, who were responsible for

the very funny Blades of Glory, but also the not quite funny The Switch. We are there, we are so there, because of Kate McKinnon. She’s been our favorite funny person for a while now, thanks to SNL, but now the moviegoing population knows that, as the MVP of Ghostbusters, she can work wonders on the big screen. There are other people in Office Christmas Party, of course: Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Munn, Jason Bateman, T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Randall Park and Rob Corddry, and we like them, too. But all we want for Christmas is Kate, so thank you in advance for this answered wish list item.

REBEL IN THE RYE CATCHES SALINGER’S LIFE

A

ctor Danny Strong might not be a person you know by name unless you’re an obsessive Gilmore Girls or Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan (and come on, aren’t you?). In any case, you might know his name from his other career as a successful screenwriter (The Butler) and for having co-created Empire with Lee Daniels. And he has a new project in the works: Rebel in The Rye a biopic about the life of reclusive author of Catcher in The Rye, J.D. Salinger. Strong will direct from his own adaptation of the book, J.D. Salinger: A Life,

by Kenneth Slawenski. The period film will focus on Salinger’s rise to fame and subsequent withdrawal from public life, and will star Nicholas Hoult as the author. Supporting cast includes out actors Sarah Paulson and Victor Garber, alongside Kevin Spacey, Zoey Deutch and Hope Davis, and it’s all due to hit movie theaters sometime in 2017. If we had to guess we’d say the autumn, which is sweater weather, and therefore the most appropriately preppy time of year to see a film about Salinger.

We Built a Better Mousetrap: Kegenix Rx for Weight Loss

n

Ketones are substances in the body that are produced by the breaking down of fats. The body breaks down fats to fuel cells when there aren’t enough carbohydrates available for energy. Extremely high levels of ketones in the body can be dangerous, but recent studies have shown that ketones may have a wide range of benefits at lower levels. Having a mild level of ketones in the body and burning fat for energy rather than carbohydrates are signs of being in a state of “ketosis.” Kegenix was one of the first exogenous (from By outside the body) sources Dr. Ferdinand of ketones developed. Cabrera Since its inception, it has been used to keep people in ketosis for various benefits. Kegenix Rx is the next step from the traditional formula of Kegenix.

BENEFITS OF KEGENIX Kegenix is taken to keep the body in the state of ketosis. Being in ketosis has many proven, and many more theorized, benefits for the body and mind. Burning fat rather than carbohydrates is a cleaner process and more than twice as efficient. This means a state of ketosis provides a boost to energy levels for all physical and mental activities. The single biggest area that benefits from ketosis is weight loss. Being in a state of ketosis naturally means the body burns stored fat. Patients taking Kegenix to achieve ketosis can see great increases in their levels of fitness, and drops in their weight. The extra energy from burning fats rather than carbs also makes it easier for patients to exercise, furthering their fitness goals.

Ketones and the state of ketosis have also been shown to have beneficial effects in the treatment of cancer. A diet that is low in sugar and high in ketone-boosting foods can effectively “starve” cancer cells of sugar, slowing their metabolism. This is due to the cancer cells’ relative inability to adapt to using ketones as a source of energy, something healthy cells do easily. Further research has proven that a ketogenic diet may affect cancer-promoting pathways in other ways as well.

SOME OF THE VARIOUS OTHER BENEFITS OF KETOSIS INCLUDE: Improvement of general mood. Increased ability to focus. Reduction of free radicals in the body (which has anti-aging effects). Controlling blood sugar levels. Improving sleep quality. Decreasing inflammation. And many more.

IMPROVEMENTS OF KEGENIX RX OVER KEGENIX The greatest benefit and use for traditional Kegenix was as a weight loss aid. However, Kegenix was not formulated with this use in mind. Kegenix Rx was specifically designed to enhance the weight loss benefits of being in a state of ketosis, along with other changes to increase the overall efficiency of the supplement.

THE IMPROVEMENTS TO KEGENIX RX IN THE AREA OF WEIGHT LOSS INCLUDE: Putting the body into ketosis much faster, almost immediately. Completely removing unnatural hunger

pains. Removing hunger pains decreases the likelihood of the patient straying from their diet. Giving the patient a feeling of satiation, which greatly reduces their cravings. These improvements to Kegenix Rx not only help patients lose weight quickly, but also assist in preventing rebounding weight gain. NASA and branches of the military have already begun studying the benefits of ketones for years. If the top minds and bodies of America are using this discovery as a means of improving themselves, why shouldn’t everyone? Kegenix Rx can help people achieve all of their goals, fitness and otherwise. For more information, call Dr. Cabrera at 954-561-3175 between 9 am and 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday. Let us discuss the possible benefits of Kegenix Rx for you. nn
