The customs and social behavior of the Maldivians have been greatly influenced by the Indians, Sri Lankans, Arabs and North Africans who visited the Maldives while traversing through the trading routes of the central Indian Ocean. Maldives is typically bright, hot and humid all year round, except for the occasional rainy days hardly accompanied by thundershowers. The monsoonal rain usually arrives on the sunny shores during mid-year. However, light rainfall is unpredictable and could happen at any time, but it is always followed by sunny skies. Temperature of Maldives range between 24째 C and 33째 C throughout the year.

Though Maldives was culturally influenced by other traditions, Maldivians have built and preserved an exclusive cultural identity. Accordingly the Maldivians converse using a language of their own; in 1153 AD Maldivians converted to Islam and the religion has transformed and introduced new fundamentals to the Maldivian culture.

Culture and values of Sri Lanka is based around the fusion of traditional forms of art, dance and music. It is one that fascinates many due to its uniqueness and mystifying diversity. Nourished by Buddhism in the early 2nd century B.C and also influenced by ancient Indian invasions. Customs and traditions are deeply ingrained in Sri Lankan society and have been passed on from one generation to the next, over a period of 2,500 years.

These traditions are intertwined with day to day life of the island’s four ethnic groups, the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers and their religions, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.

Although the Philippines is located in Southeast Asia, its people are commonly deemed to be significantly “less Asian” than those from other Asian countries.

This is due to the myriad of inhabitants the country has had throughout the years, including Chinese, Malay, and Islamic peoples to name a few. In a sense, Philippine culture can be said to be a marriage of the East and the West.

Spanish influences on Philippine culture are most evident when it comes to religion and religious practices. As the slogan suggests, “It’s more fun in the Philippines”.

Numerous “fiestas” or religious festivals are celebrated year-round, mostly in honor of their respective patron saints.

The Philippines experience a dry season from April to June, and a wet season from June to October, with the hottest month being May, and the coolest being January.

Heavy rains usually comes between May and October. Philippines is located within the world’s most severe cyclone belt, and is hit by approximately 15 cyclones each year.

Our Story began 20 years ago with a chance encounter onboard a yacht in Maldives. After sharing ideas, we decided to try to do something together. Our goal was to build something that provided exceptional service and different to what was already available in the market. After the architectural drawing and hectic days of work on a local island in Maldives, we built our first yacht in 2002. It was our first foray into the tourism market in Maldives.

Carpe Diem Maldives Collaborates with Loliware to Bring the World's First Biodegradable and Edible Straw to the Maldives 31

Carpe Diem Maldives is working together with Loliware to bring the world’s first biodegradable and edible straw to the Maldives.

It is widely claimed there are enough plastic straws to wrap around the Earth’s circumference 2.5 times each day. Because they are so small, most straws are not recycled and usually end up in landfills and waterways, where they linger indefinitely, harming wildlife, and marring the natural beauty.

According to Carpe Diem Maldives manufacturing begins this month to create the healthy and refreshing straw that can be eaten or composted after being used. Made to disappear and designed to have the same functionality expected of a plastic straw, Lolistraw will last for up to 8 hrs in a beverage and will have a shelf life of up to 24 months.

The founders of LOLIWARE and the straw’s designers, Chelsea Briganti and Leigh Ann Tucker, have coined the term “hyper-compostable” to convey that all of their products, including Lolistraw, will break down at the same rate as food waste in compost or the natural environment, such as a waterway.

Made from a new seaweed-based material, the initial texture is like plastic but can be created with

a flavour or with added nutrients. On Carpe Diem Cruises and at the upcoming resort, the chosen lime flavour will add to the experience when sipping a cocktail, a simple glass of water or a refreshing coconut juice.

For those who do not want to eat the straw, it is also compostable and marine degradable. Unlike another material often used for compostable utensils–PLA, which is usually made from corn starch–Loliware breaks down quickly, so it can be composted in a home system rather than requiring industrial composting equipment. If the seaweed-based straw happens to end up in the ocean, it will dissolve, which is excellent news for the pristine waters of the Maldives, and any unassuming hungry marine life that might swim by.

“We’re not telling the consumer, hey, you can’t have your straw. We’re providing them with a solution to the plastic straw crisis while also giving them a fun experience on top of that,” says Chelsea Briganti.

“It’s not about the consumer sacrificing anymore, and it’s about the consumer having fun and being sustainable at the same time. Some bioplastics just break down into smaller pieces, whereas Lolistraw is designed to disappear literally.”

DeepFlight produces the world’s highest performance personal submarines. On May 3, 2018, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru was the first resort to launch submarine excursions in DeepFlight’s most advanced model, the Super Falcon 3S. In a world exclusive, DeepFlight Adventures take up to two guests on a once-in-a-lifetime sub-aquatic “dive” exploration of the Maldives’ only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Landaa Giraavaru’s Baa Atoll home.

With a professional pilot at the controls, passengers can skim over coral formations; fly through shoals of brightly coloured fish; encounter creatures such as turtles, sharks, dolphins and rays; and explore the Maldivian waters down to a depth of 120 feet (37 metres) – all without getting wet.

Brought to the Maldives in collaboration with leading water sports operator Ocean Group Pvt. Ltd, the Super Falcon 3S represents the pinnacle of personal submarine technology: an environmentally friendly, battery-operated submersible that offers unparalleled underwater “flying” from the safety, comfort and style of a personal pressurised and air-conditioned cockpit, with individual viewing domes.

Once submerged, the domes virtually disappear, providing a 360-degree view of the underwater world. Additionally, its flight-inspired design allows the Super Falcon 3S to glide effortlessly over reefs and cruise alongside marine mammals such as dolphins.

The Super Falcon 3S has also been designed with the environment in mind: its electric and acoustic emissions have been minimised so as not to disturb marine life, and it never lands on the seabed or reefs. The pilot narrates each dive with a real-time commentary, educating and inspiring guests about the wonders of the underwater ecosystem.

BACKWATER HOUSEBOATS IN KERALA, INDIA The houseboats, as we know them today, the huge, slow-moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips - are the renovated kettuvalloms of olden times. The original kettuvalloms were used to carry tons of rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port. An average kettuvallom can carry up to 30 tons.

The kettuvallam or ‘boat with knots’- is so called because the entire boat is held together with coir knots alone. Not a single nail is used during the construction.

The boat is made of planks of jack-wood jointed together with coir. This is then coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels. With careful maintenance, a kettuvallom can last for generations.

Back in the day a portion of the kettuvallom was covered with bamboo and coir to serve as a restroom and kitchen for the crew. Meals would be cooked on board and supplemented with fresh fish from the backwaters. The tradition is still continued on the houseboats of today and typical Kerala cuisine is served by the crew on board, who themselves come from Kuttanad, the heart of the backwaters.

When modern trucks replaced this system of transport, a ingenious idea was implemented to keep them afloat. Most of these houseboats were more than a 100 years old and still in good condition.

By constructing special rooms to accommodate travellers, these boats cruised forward from near- extinction to enjoy their present popularity. Now these are a familiar sight on the backwaters and in Alleppey alone, there are as many as 300 houseboats.

While converting kettuvallams into houseboats, care is taken to use only natural products. Bamboo mats, sticks and wood of the arecanut tree are used for the roofing, coir mats and wooden planks for the flooring and the wood and coir of coconut trees for beds. For lighting solar panels are used.

Today, the houseboats are fitted with all the creature comforts of a good hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for sunbathing or angling.

Parts of the curved roof of plaited palm open out to provide shade and allow uninterrupted views. While some boats are poled by local oarsmen, most are powered by a 9 HP engine. Boat trains formed by joining two or more houseboats together - are also used by large groups of sight-seers.

What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers , while you float!

Located within the borders of the International Whaling Commission’s Protected Zone in the waters of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is gradually turning out to be a favored island destination for Whale Watching with sightings of varieties of Baleen whales and Toothed whales. Our little island stands proud as a destination for all year round recreational activities. Over a hundred rivers and eco systems contribute to the ocean around Sri Lanka. With the swell during the monsoon season as well as the island’s perfect location and its proximity to the continental shelf creates the perfect condition to support the food chain in the warm tropical water systems of Sri Lanka.

Whales are warm blooded, marine mammals which are of the order Cetacea. They breathe air, give birth to live young and are found in all the oceans of the world. Whales are divided into two suborders, the Odontoceti (toothed whales) and Mysticeti (baleen whales). Mysticeti are toothless mammals while instead of teeth, they have a rigid brush like whalebone plate material which is called ‘baleen’ which hangs from their upper jaw area.

These mammoth sea creatures are indeed a spectacular sight to witness while there are a number of tour packages that we have in store for the adventure loving tourists. Some of the best Whale watching destinations in Sri Lanka consist of the Alankuda Beach in Kalpitiya along the West Coast, Mirissa or Dondra in the Deep South and Trincomalee along the East Coast. Destinations such as Aluthgama, Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa are also known for the sighting of whales. There are 80 species of whales that have been identified in all oceans, while 26 of them have been recorded up to date in and around the seas of Sri Lanka.

Some of them include the Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus), Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), Killer Whale (Orcinus Orca), Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus), Pygmy Sperm Whale (Kogia breviceps), Dwarf Sperm Whale (Kogia simus), Bryde’s Whale (Balaenoptera brydei), Melon Headed Whale (Peponocephala electra), Cuvier’s Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris), Ginkgo-toothed Beaked Whale (Mesoplodon ginkgodens), Southern Bottlenose Whale (Hyperoodon planifrons), False Killer Whale (Pseudorca crassidens), Pygmy Killer Whale (Feresa attenuata) and Shortfinned Pilot Whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus).

Some of these species are occasional visitors while some are permanent residents around Sri Lankan waters. Most of these whales are seen while migrating from the Arabian seas to the Bay of Bengal. A high concentration of sperm whales and blue whales can be spotted off the coast of Dondra during the months of December to April. According to marine biologists, these whales can be residents or visitors since the continental shelf off Dondra and Mirissa is quite narrow. Also the best spot to have a glimpse of the sperm whale would be along the North-Western coast in Kalpitiya. Whale watching is also possible during the months of June to September along the Eastern coast such as Trincomalee.

Whales are fond of deep waters while they have the tendency to communicate with sound and song.

Previously, Trincomalee was considered as the hotspot for Whale Watching but after recent sightings in the Deep South, whale watching expeditions have been increased off the Southern coastal belt as well. The average time duration for a trip would be approximately 4 hours while the trip usually starts off at 6.30 in the morning. Blue Whale Tagged as an endangered species category, the blue whale (balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whales. Ranging up to 30 meters in length and approximately 170 tonnes or more, the blue whale is the largest existing animal in the world.

Their tongues alone can weigh as much as an elephant. They occasionally swim in small groups but mainly they are found alone or in pairs.

Sperm Whale The largest toothed whale and the largest toothed predator, the Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) or Cachalot stands at an average of 16 meters (52 ft) in length. It has the ability to plunge down to 2250 meters for prey which mainly consists of squid.

The sperm whale has the largest brain compared to all the animals on earth and it is believed to be more than 5 times heavier than a human brain. The sperm whale can live up to 60 years.

Bryde’s Whale These mammals are moderately sized rorquals while the average length spans from 45 – 50 feet. The Bryde’s whale is also a baleen whale and belongs to the same group as blue whales and humpback whales.

A significant feature is that this species have twin blowholes, no teeth and 2 two rows of baleen plates. Bryde’s whale or the Bryde’s whale complex putatively comprises two subspecies of rorqual and maybe three.

Killer Whale Belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, the killer whale (Orcinus Orca) is a toothed whale that has a diverse diet.

Some feed on fish, some hunt marine mammals such as pinnipeds and large whales.

These species are very social while they boast of very sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behavioural patterns.

Scubaspa is a unique concept of two 50 meters long identical safari yachts based in the warm, blue waters of the Indian ocean.

Both vessels are built of various cabins to meet the expectations of the most demanding guests. Onboard Scubaspa you can also find two bars, restaurant with an international flair serving wide selection of the fineness wines from all over the world.
