Launched in 2005, Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry. The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Our design work begins each summer, creating practical and inviting educational materials organizations will need to implement and promote their programs for the upcoming year, and ends the following spring when we provide print materials and social media art for the National Finals recitation competition, which is held live in Washington, DC (virtually during the pandemic). As of 2022, over 4 million students and 17,000 schools have participated! We’ve been part of the creative team since its early years.
Clever
You often hear about the “unattainable triad” in working with a vendor—price, quality, and speed. This is particularly true with printing companies (also design firms!). Rather than focusing on their equipment, we branded Goetz Printing with the needs of the print buyer in mind (that triangle of needs is very important) while also reminding clients that an exceptional printer is more than just ink on paper. The creative included a new logo, unusual promotional materials, and miscellaneous free useful print publications, including calendars (one year it doubled as a coloring book) and, even, a pandemic activity booklet for print buyers at home with their children (or inner child). We can see the word FUN in functional.
Collaborative
Good design is enhanced by expert writing, editing, visuals, and printing. Since the NAIS Trendbook’s first edition in 2009, we have been part of the team putting together this valuable guide about trends and issues affecting independent schools. The annual book tells the story with an insightful narrative; thorough research; and detailed charts, graphs, and figures (which require both creativity and focus). This bestseller also includes strategic questions schools need to be asking themselves, action steps to take for the upcoming year, and additional resources for a deeper dive into current topics.

Siana Creations is a jewelry importing company founded to help single mothers on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, earn a living wage. Leveraging the power of great design, local talent, and an abundant supply of sustainable materials—upcycled cowhorn, cowbone, recycled newspapers, coffee grounds(!), and beads from East and West Africa—Siana Creations partnered with designers in Kenya to distribute these lines of uncommon jewelry to the North American market. We helped launch the company with a catalogue, website, trade show displays, and promotional materials that reflect the care and skills of these very talented artisans.

Thought for Food (and more). This corporate identity for a respected catering company went beyond highlighting the tasty meals they served—because a great event is about more than food. In addition to providing delicious meals, Windows Catering made sure the venue was perfect, the place settings were exquisite, the drinks were delectable, the decorations were festive, and—most importantly—every guest had a good time!
Sensible
Each year since 1982, the federal government has been recognizing the artistic excellence, lifetime achievement, and contributions of our nation’s traditional artists through the National Heritage Fellowships. No fuss, feathers, or noise is used (or needed) to honor these incredible individuals. For 10 years as of 2022, Fletcher Design has been creating the program for a live event (and awesome documentaries during the pandemic), print and online advertising, and social media art.
focused
The work YOU do is important and we respect that. Whether the subject is healthcare, education, economics, world affairs, or the arts, we research each topic to come up with an appropriate design for books, booklets, and other publications. We always keep your goals and audience in mind—our egos and design trends are not part of the creative process.

The Big Read is a national initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The program provides support to selected nonprofit organizations around the country to host dynamic community-wide reading programs, each designed around a single book title. In its early years, we managed the creative and production process of over 150 different print elements (including Reader’s Guides, Teacher’s Guides, Audio Guides, posters, and bookmarks). One BIG project. And one cool, calm, and heads-securely-fastened design shop to handle all the program’s needs, delivered on time and without any snafus.
