consistently strived to better itself and it’s a fantastic feeling to feel that work ethic and team spirit when we all come together.

Today we kick off our second season in League One and the campaign ahead remains just as challenging and exciting as our first one.

Captain’scolumn › Good afternoon and welcome back to Highbury for the start of the new 2015/16 Sky Bet League One season with newly promoted Southend United today’s visitors.

There have been changes to the playing squad over the summer months, with a number of players departing the Club. They all contributed to our highest ever league finish last season, so I would like to thank them for their contribution, and wish them well with their future careers.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the new faces who have arrived at Highbury, and firmly believe they will all be a success here. The manager has added some exciting young players to our ranks, while also recruiting experience in the form of Jimmy Ryan and Eggert Jonsson.

Pre-season has been difficult as the manager has put us through our paces. We enjoyed a productive week out in Germany, and developed as a squad in games against Borussia Dortmund and Alemannia Aachen respectively.

The lads, like myself, have all been itching for this date however as nothing beats competitive football. We finished in an impressive 10th place last term, and will be hoping to build on our success this year.

I was delighted to be named Club captain for the forthcoming season at the beginning of the week, and am relishing the opportunity of leading

the lads for our second campaign at this level. It is a real honour and privilege for me to captain a Club that I have been associated with for so many years.

I know how this Club is run and what it is all about. With the younger squad that we have this season, it’s key that the experienced players like myself prove to be big characters in the dressing room. We need to pass our experience on to them.

Today’s opponents from Essex are similar to ourselves in the way that they came up through the Play-Offs last season, so they’ll definitely have confidence in their squad.

Every club will be up for the start of the season though but I do think it’ll be a tough game, there’s no doubt about that.

They’ve just signed a couple of attacking players which will boost their squad so it’s sure to be an interesting battle.

We played well in our final pre-season fixture against Getafe last Friday evening. Pre-season is all about fitness though and results don’t really matter as much, but it was good to get a win at home and we’ll take that into today and the new season.

Communitytrust › Fleetwood Town’s Community Trust has had a new intake of students on the Club’s popular NCS programme.

Under the guidance of NCS Co-ordinator Joey Newson, a new member of staff at Fleetwood Town, the youngsters enjoyed a fantastic trip north of the border in Scotland at Lockerbie.

Joey, a former Fleetwood Town U18s player, spoke to the Club for the very first time at what the new intake of NCS students have been up to with a new adventure already scheduled for this week.

“It has been really good. It has been a challenge coming in a couple of weeks ago and going straight onto the course. We have a great group and they have made the first week really enjoyable and easy for the staff.

“We went up to Lockerbie in Scotland fir the first week. It was a great adventure for everyone. We head off to Preston today (Monday) to Hothersall Lodge and we will be looking to teach the young people life skills.

“So that means budgeting, cooking, and cleaning. We are teaching them skills that they will need to use on a day to day basis.

“We will be at Hothersall until Friday evening. The programme runs continuous for four weeks. The first week we did team building activities, the second learning life skills and the third and fourth is devising a social action project in the community “We will then go out and deliver that in the community and for the people living in Fleetwood.

“It is a really important project. We are bringing people together; they are learning off one another and building a great team spirit.

“It is fantastic; we are getting people out of their comfort zones and teaching them new things.”

He concluded: “I played football growing up and actually played for Fleetwood. I picked up an injury which stopped me playing and I opted to go to university and studied a degree in sports development and coaching.

“I went on to America but earlier this year I moved back to England with health problems but I saw the opportunity to work for a such a wonderful club like Fleetwood Town and it is great to see how it has developed over the last five years since I left. It is great to be back at the Club in this capacity.”

Welcomesouthend utd › Southend United visit Highbury Stadium for this afternoon’s Sky Bet League One opener against Graham Alexander’s Fleetwood Town.

Recently promoted from Sky Bet League Two via the Play-Offs, the Shrimpers will be hoping for a successful campaign in the third tier under manager Phil Brown’s guidance.

Three-years and 135 appearances followed in Yorkshire, with a move to Burnden Park to link up with Bolton Wanderers next on the agenda for Brown.

Brown has acted astutely during the summer transfer window, by recruiting experience in the form of Dave Mooney, Anthony Wordsworth and Noel Hunt.

In a prolonged spell with the Greater Manchester outfit, the full-back was part of Bolton’s side which won the Football League Trophy in 1989.

Irish striker Mooney penned a two-year deal with the Club after leaving Leyton Orient having scored 38 goals in 140 games at Brisbane Road.

Midfielder Wordsworth, who enjoyed a productive spell with Crawley Town towards the end of last season, also signed a two-year contract.

More recently, the Shrimpers added former Reading striker Noel Hunt to their ranks, with the Republic of Ireland international teaming up with the Essex outfit.

Departing Roots Hall is forward Barry Corr who has signed for Cambridge United, while keeper Paul Smith and striker Lee Barnard were released at the end of their contracts.

Brown began his professional career with Hartlepool United in 1978, where he made 217 appearances at Victoria Park, before securing a move to Halifax Town in 1985.

He left the Trotters in 1994 after turning out 256 times, ending his career with a two-year stint at Blackpool.

Following his retirement from the professional game after twoyears with Pool, Brown took his first footsteps into coaching when he assisted former manager Sam Allardyce, firstly at Blackpool and then a return Bolton Wanderers over a nine year period.

promotion to the Premier League in May 2008, following a 1-0 win over Bristol City at Wembley in the Play-Off final – and he would subsequently achieve survival with City on the final day of the 2008/09 Premier League season.

Brown left his position at Hull in March 2010, as the club faced relegation back to the Championship, and following a brief spell in charge at Preston North End, Brown was back in management with Southend in March 2013 as he replaced Paul Sturrock.

After honing his trade under the watchful eye of Allardyce, Brown left Wanderers and took his first footsteps into management with Derby County in June 2005, however he was relieved of his duties at Pride Park just a few months later.

Following his departure from the Rams, Brown was appointed as a first-team coach at Hull City, and took over the Tigers as the club’s permanent manager in January 2007.

Star man:dan bentley › Goalkeeper Dan Bentley signed for Southend United in 2008 after being released by Arsenal.

Southend United and played for their Under 18 side before signing a professional contract in the summer of 2009.

An understudy to Glenn Morris to begin with, Bentley spent time out on loan at Braintree Town, but only appeared twice.

Bentley made his debut for Southend when he came on as a substitute against Torquay United in October 2011, replacing the injured Morris.

The 22 year old and was born in Basildon on the 13th July 1993, and began his career at Arsenal after being picked up by their academy aged just eight.

He progressed through their youth team set-up alongside now England star Jack Wilshere, before being released seven years ago.

Another injury to Morris gave him his chance between the sticks, when he replaced Paul Smith during the 2012/13 campiagn.

In the Football League Trophy southern area semi-final against Oxford United, Bentley was brought on to replace Smith in the 90th minute as the game went to penalties.

It turned out to be a brave move, as Bentley saved the decisive spotkick as the Shrimpers marched into the final.

At the start of the 2013/14 season he was named first choice keeper at Roots Hall, and kept an impressive 19 clean sheets.

The 2014/15 season turned out to be the best yet for Bentley,

as he saved the final penalty in the League Two Play-Off final against Wycombe Wanderers, securing the club’s promotion to League One in the process.

He went on to win all three season awards at Southend last year, as he was named Supporters’ Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Community Player of the Year, and made the League Two PFA Team of the Year.

This summer Bentley have been linked with Nottingham Forest, Hull City and Barclays Premier League side West Ham United.

John White

Southend captain John Smith recently put pen to paper on a new two year contract with the Roots Hall outfit ahead of the new Sky Bet League One campaign.

The 29-year-old defender has made 95 Shrimpers appearances since joining on a free transfer in 2013 after leaving Essex rivals Colchester United.

He captained Phil Brown’s side during their League Two Play-Off final victory over Wycombe Wanderers in May.

David Worrall

Midfielder Worrall started his career in the youth set-up at Bury before moving to West Bromwich Albion in 2007.

Upon leaving the Hawthorns in 2010, Worrall re-signed for Bury and enjoyed a productive spell as he featured over a 140 times.

He would later move to Rotherham United in 2013, but was loaned out to Oldham Athletic before moving to Essex a year later.

Noel Hunt

Former Ipswich, Leeds and Reading striker Noel Hunt signed a one year deal with the option of a second at Roots Hall last week.

The 32-year-old Republic of Ireland international was recently released by the Tractor Boys, having only joined them in January following a loan spell.

Hunt has scored 42 goals in 193 appearances since moving to English football in 2008, and will hope to be the man to fire the Shrimpers to success at this level.

Michael Timlin

The experienced 30 year old midfielder has been at Roots Hall since 2012 having signed for the Shrimpers from Swindon Town.

Timlin spent two occasions on loan in Essex from Wiltshire before making his switch permanent three years ago.

A product of the Fulham academy set-up, Timlin failed to make an appearance in West London and enjoyed spells on loan at Scunthorpe United, Doncaster Rovers and Swindon.

He spent four years at the County Ground before moving to Southend, where he has established himself as fans favourite.

Ben Coker

Coker was offered a contract by Phil Brown at the start of the 2013/14 season after impressing on trial with the club.

He has established himself as a permanent fixture in the side ever since, and signed a new two year in April 2014, keeping him contracted to the club until 2016.

The defender joined Colchester United in 2010 after being picked up from non-league outfit Bury Town.

He was named the U’s Young Player of the Year at the end of the 2010/11 campaign, but cancelled his contract with the Club during the 2012/13 season.

Kevan Hurst

Hurst started his professional career with Sheffield United in 2003, but spent time away from Bramall Lane at various clubs.

He made a permanent move to Scunthorpe United in 2007 where he featured regularly, before moving to Carlisle United in 2009.

His stay in Cumbria was fairly short-lived however and he signed for West Midlands outfit Walsall for the 2011/12 season.

The midfielder spent only a season at the Banks’ Stadium, before teaming up with Southend where he has appeared over a 100 times.

Former Shrimper Della-Verde excited by highbury challenge › Midfielder Lyle Della-Verde penned a deal with Town at the end of July after impressing the Club’s management during preseason.

Released by Championship outfit Fulham at the end of last season, the former Southend United man signed a two-year contract at Highbury.

He admits he is excited by the challenge on the Fylde Coast as he looks to establish himself in the first team fold after spending time in the reserve side at Craven Cottage in recent seasons.

“I joined Southend at Under 14 level and was picked up by them when I was playing Sunday League football. They scouted me and invited me for a six week trial at Roots Hall and I ended up getting signed after that period.

“From there it all progressed really. I played for them at all ages and was part of the FA Youth Cup team and was scouted by a number of different clubs. There was a quite a bit of interest in me at that point.

“I’ve hit the ground running in terms of pre-season so I’m just looking forward to the start of the season now like most of the lads are. Hopefully I can improve and get better as the season goes along.

“I played a few Conference games last season for Bristol Rovers but League One is now the highest competitive level I will have played at. The challenge of playing against better teams and better players excites me.

“Playing against better opposition will hopefully make me a better player. My aim is to play as many games as possible this season and help the Club go as high as they can.

“We played all of our Youth Cup games at Roots Hall so I’ve played there quite a bit. I was on the bench for the first team a few times too so my memories of Southend have all been positive.

And the youngster is relishing his first competitive game in Town colours this afternoon, as his former side from Essex travel north for the start of the new campaign.

Speaking exclusively to #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Della-Verde discussed his time at Roots Hall and what he now hopes to achieve with Graham Alexander’s side.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to the Southend game and
