Ash Hunter is enjoying good form this season and is currently eyeing up the record amount of EFL appearances, after making his 162nd against Barnsley.

Ash is the second longest-serving player in the current squad at Fleetwood Town, with Jack Sowerby being the longest. The first of his 162 appearance came in February 2015, and was co-incidentally against today’s opponents Peterborugh United.

caught up with Cod Army favourite, Ash Hunter, a couple of days after the Southend game at Highbury. Coming on immediately after the break, Ash played a significant part in an improved second-half performance for Fleetwood.

“The gaffer told me and Nadders to take the game to Southend. He wanted us to make a positive impact going forward.”

Making a telling contribution from the bench is something that Ash has done many times. Of his 162 EFL games, there have been as many as 74 appearances as a substitute.

The very first was way back on 7th February, 2015. Co-incidentally, it was against Peterborough United, this afternoon’s opponents. It is so long ago that Ash is hazy as to who he replaced!

“I think I came on for the last quarter of an hour or so. I remember taking the full back on and out sprinting him down the right wing but it seems such a long time ago now.

The time has just flown by.”

Quoting the starting team from back then gives an idea of the longevity shown by a player who is still only twenty-three years old; Chris Maxwell, Conor McLaughlin, Mark Roberts, Steven Jordan, Stephen Crainey, Gareth Evans (who he replaced), Jeff Hughes, Josh Morris, Nick Haughton, Jamie Proctor and David Ball.

They are players who have long since gone, apart from Crainey who now coaches at the club.

Ash is closing in on the appearance totals of Ball and McLaughlin, the only two ahead of him.

“I’ve got two years left on my contract so there’s every chance I can beat them.”

The three-year deal offered last March did not take much thinking about.

“I was delighted to sign a new contract. I was fresh out of non-league with everything to prove. I’m very grateful that I came to

Fleetwood. The club has been very kind to me over the years and to be offered my third contract here meant a lot to me. There’s a lot more to come from me.”

The chance to learn from players who have been to the top of the game has been a big help this season.

“It’s brilliant to work with players like Ross Wallace, Dean Marney and Ryan Taylor who have all played in the Premier League.

“Their experience and help is a lot different to anything I’ve had before. They know what they are saying because they’ve been there. Ross and I have played a lot together.

IT’S GOOD TO LEARN MORE THAN ONE POSITION. IT GIVES THE MANAGER MORE OPTIONS AND ALSO HELPS ME TO GET MORE GAMES WHEN THE FORMATION MIGHT BE CHANGED.

“At set pieces, we will both stand on the ball and usually one or other of us will fancy the free kick, like at corners, It’s great for my confidence that someone with that experience trusts me to put a good ball in.”

One feature over the seasons has been Ash’s growing experience in different positions.

“It’s good to learn more than one position. It gives the manager more options and also helps me to get more games when the formation might be changed. Both Wes Burns and I have become more versatile.

“Against Southend, for instance, I started in a wide role on the left, where I’ve played before, then came more into centre midfield.

Despite being right-footed, I find it easier

playing on the left hand side. When I get turned I’m able to get on to my right foot and set something up.”

John Sheridan, one of five Fleetwood managers who Ash has played under, encouraged him to play a more defensive role on the left side last season.

“I was definitely out of position at left wing back but the gaffer believed in me and I think that he didn’t want to leave me out of the team.

“He pulled me to one side a few times and told me how good I was. What he said filled me with confidence so I’ll always be grateful to him for that.

“His thing was about fun and enjoying ourselves so we would often have a laugh in training and five-a-side. It was the best thing for us in the difficult situation that we faced. He lifted us and allowed us to enjoy our football.”

Ash’s desire to continually improve his game is still evident.

“I’ve practised left foot crossing quite a bit this season, maybe for five or ten minutes after training. I’m trying to mix my game up otherwise people can suss me more easily.

I’d be happy to be half as good with my left foot as my right.”

One feature coming through from the coaching team this season has been the license to make a mistake without worrying.

“It’s not about making the mistake in the first place but how you react to it, provided that is under control. It’s an approach which gives you a freedom to try things. I love my football at the minute. I didn’t play all of preseason apart from the games in Hungary.

“We had a few conversations in the manager’s office and I told him how much I wanted to play. I made my first start in the second game, away at Oxford United, and didn’t look back. My form was great during the first half of the season.”

There were twenty further starts in all games up to January, with most off the bench since.

“From the bench there’s a need for me to prove to the manager why I should be playing.”

With the avalanche of statistics that accompany games these days, much prominence has been given to the assists and goals that Ash has been involved in alongside Ched Evans and Paddy Madden.

“I’m always looking to make something happen on the pitch, particularly going forward.

“I always know that Paddy or Ched are going to be there in the box when I put the ball in. Ched holds it up well at the back stick.

Let’s not forget Wes Burns. He is similar to me, playing everywhere. He’s like a little Kyle Walker at right back!”

Ash currently lies second in the Fleetwood Town EFL all-time goalscoring list, on thirty.

Just twelve more and he will have overtaken David Ball!

“I definitely won’t be getting to Bally’s record until next season! As for this season,

it would be nice to get to double figures by the end.”

He currently stands on seven in the league plus an FA Cup goal at Alfreton.

“Ash remembers goals well and once quoted his headed goal against Sheffield United as his best ‘because I don’t get many with my head.’ On reflection, he picked out two others for me.

“I’m going for the ones at home against MK Dons last year and at Scunthorpe United away this year.

“They were both similar goals, from the left side of the area into the top right-hand corner. I’ve been working hard on that type of finish in training.”

Ash has played a lot of football with some of the team and got to know them well.

“Before Kyle Dempsey went out on loan, he was probably the one I was closest to at the club. To be fair, I’ve got as good a relationship with some of the new lads as I have with those who’ve been here for ages. It’s nice to get on with them all.”

Golf is a favourite pastime when time allows.

“Sometimes, if it’s nice after training or on a Wednesday we’ll go out for a game. It might be Heron’s Reach, Fleetwood or Shaw Hill in Chorley.

“Lewie Coyle and Ryan Taylor are the ones to avoid. Coyley goes on about not being very good but he’s probably the best here. Tayls is good as well.”

Before the players leave for Summer, they will be issued training instructions.

“It’s usually just before the last game of the season. Then it’s back ready to work hard and push on next season.”

Much has happened for the man who almost quit the game after successive setbacks in the Midlands. Mum’s dogged determination and support famously helped him get his career back on track. It recently came to the fore again when she completed the Manchester Marathon.

“I know she’s very proud of me,’ her son concedes.

A marathon stint at Fleetwood Town would surely break all club records and keep fans on the edges of their seats watching one of Fleetwood’s most exciting players!

arren Ferguson was appointed Peterborough manager for the third time in January.

His first spell in charge saw him take the club from League Two to the Championship, earning back-to-back promotions between 2007 and 2009. He returned to the club in 2011, and helped them win promotion back to the second tier via the play-offs.

He left the club in 2015 and had spells at Preston North End and Doncaster Rovers.

Ferguson’s playing career started at Manchester United, under his father, before making 310 appearances for Wrexham later on in his career.

He will be to get another promotion under his belt this season, with a chance of reaching the play-offs.

DANGER MAN: Toney playing against Middlesbrough

Fleetwood Town v Peterborough United

ince joining Peterborough from Newcastle last summer, Ivan Toney has proved lethal in front of goal.

Toney joined Newcastle in 2015, from Northampton Town - where he was the clubs youngest ever first-team player at the age of 16. Whilst at the club, he had loan spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury, Scunthorpe and Wigan.

The forward left in the summer of 2019 for a fee believed to be in the region of £650,000 and has flourished at his new permanent club.

This season has seen him score 19 goals across all competitions, including two hat-tricks. The most recent coming against Bradford City in Peterborough’s final game of 2018.

ACADEMY WITH SIMON WILES UNDER 18S COACH

As this will be the last Under 18s update of the 2018/19 season, I just want to say a huge thank you to all the staff and players for their continued support over the last 12 months.

When I look at the campaign we’ve had, I am really pleased with how it has gone so far and when you see the development of the players – which it is about in the grand scheme of things – it is great to see each individual in the squad progress on a day-to-day basis.

This has ultimately been reflected in their performances this season, and there was times where those players have had opportunities to train with the Development Squad and with the first team, and that is an amazing feeling as a coach, seeing your players developing and becoming better players.

We have three games left of the season – starting with a game against Wrexham and then one against Rochdale before facing our neighbours, Blackpool.

It’s an exciting few games for us and as staff and players, we need to maintain the high standards we’ve set this campaign and make sure that runs until the final whistle.

It will test them psychologically because they know the season is nearly over, and for me personally I will see

how to handle this and maintain their focus. We want to finish off the season on a high.

I feel this is an important stage of the season for any player, they have a few weeks left to go of the season before heading away for a few weeks. During the off-season, I am sure they will let their bodies recover for two/three weeks and then start to work on their individual fitness plans.

This will help them in the first week of our pre-season as we will be putting them through their paces, and making sure they are ready for the season and not behind schedule. The current firstyear scholars will need to show us how much they want it, as well as our current Under 16s who will make that step into the Under 18s next year.

It might be a shock to their systems at the time, but at the same time they will be preparing themselves for an important time in their footballing careers. I just hope they come back fit and ready for what I am sure will be another exciting year for the Under 18s.

COMMUNITYTRUST FLEETWOOD TOWN COMMUNITY TRUST EASTER HALF-TERM SPORTS CAMPS GO DOWN A BLAST

Over the last two weeks, the Community Trust have held Sports Camps across the Wyre and Fylde area for children aged between 5-12 years-old.

The sessions have taken place at Flakefleet Primary School – who recently got the golden buzzer on Britain’s Got Talent for their amazing performance, Carleton Green Primary School, and also Fleetwood Town’s training ground, Poolfoot Farm.

At the two schools, activities such as dodgeball and plenty of team games took place, giving the children something different to do that they wouldn’t necessarily do on a weekly basis at school. We hope all the children who attended these camps had a fantastic half-term, we look forward to seeing you at our Summer Schools.

At Poolfoot Farm, the Soccer Camp was well attended and with learning new skills, trick and flicks alongside playing plenty of football matches (see pictures below).

Huge thanks to all our staff, as without them, these sports camps wouldn’t be able to take place.​
