ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Fylde Coast derby against Blackpool.

We come into today’s game on the back of playing the top two teams in our division away from home in the last week. We’ve learnt a lot about our side, and on performance level we know that we are close to the clubs at the top end of League One. This is a division where often it’s fine margins between teams and minor details that decide games, and we are encouraged by the performances and will strive to continue improving.

I told the players after the game at Peterborough on Tuesday night that we have a chance to make history today, by being the first Fleetwood Town team to beat Blackpool.

It’s good for us that we come into the game having won our last match at Highbury against

Shrewsbury Town, and we look to continue that today. We’ve shown some really good signs in our performances recently, most notably at Peterborough, to suggest that we will get back to winning ways quickly.

It can’t be underestimated how important supporters can be on derby day, and today is no different. The support that we’ve seen both at Highbury and on the road has been first class, and myself and the players know how important today’s game is to the supporters. I can assure you that everything will be left out on the pitch as we aim for three points against a good Blackpool side, who are in very good form at this moment. Your passion, singing and encouragement of the team will be needed throughout the 90 minutes today – as we’ve seen against Bradford and Shrewsbury, you can really help the team get over the line. Midfielder Ryan Taylor is hoping to bring some of his past experience into the Fleetwood Town dressing room this season after joining in the summer.

R

yan Taylor has played over a hundred games in the Premier League and brings experience to the club that can only benefit others around him, not least the promising Fleetwood youngsters.

“I’ve spent a long time at the top and at the age of 34 it is more about enjoying myself now and getting that winning feeling as much as possible because time is limited career-wise.”

Ryan was born in Liverpool in August 1984 and brought up on the red side of the footballing divide.

“It’s not a massive family tradition that goes back generations. I would go to Anfield and stand at the Kop End. It is a fantastic place to watch your heroes.

“Mine were players like Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Steve McManaman and John Barnes. I went to Kiev for the Champions League Final against Real Madrid.”

His early career developed across the water at Tranmere Rovers.

“I owe Tranmere a lot. It is a great club and after coming through the youth set-up there learning to play football with men was a brilliant experience for me. There were good people to learn from. Steve Yates, my predecessor at full back, had tremendous energy levels and was always in the right place at the right time.”

One such was scoring in the 83rd minute on his senior debut at Hartlepool United in the League Cup. It was September 2002, just a few weeks after Ryan’s eighteenth birthday.

A league debut followed four days later.

It was a 3-1 home win over Brentford and, already, his ability to deliver quality ball was showing, with Simon Howarth converting a cross.

“Scoring from free kicks and delivering quality set pieces is what I’ve done all my life. It’s what people associate with me.’

The climax of the 2004-05 season had a bitter-sweet feel to it.

“I was selected in the League One PFA Team of the Year. It was a great honour and a memorable few days because I also picked up two awards at Tranmere, one from the fans and the other from my team-mates. Not bad for a twenty year old!”

A few days later, Ryan’s team entered the League One play-offs, having finished third in the table. After losing two nil away in the first leg, he scored first in the home tie with just twenty minutes left in the game.

The tie went to penalties and Ryan missed the first as Tranmere went on to lose 6-5.

“I remember their keeper, Dimitrios Konstantopoulus, very well. He was a big man and seemed to fill the goal. I just tried to hit it firmly down the middle.”

Strong performances drew the attention of a number of Premier League clubs and Wigan Athletic moved in, offering a four-year contract, from July 2005.

“It was obviously a massive step up for me because I skipped over the Championship, a great league in its own right.”

Ryan’s Premier League debut was at Charlton Athletic.

“I came on in the second half. It was a disappointing start. We lost one nil.”

Having originally signed for Paul Jewell,

it became increasingly more difficult when Chris Hutchings took over.

“It was hard when Chris was in charge.

Maybe it was because I wasn’t one of his signings. He knew all about me but he signed other players and I kept getting left out. It took Steve Bruce’s arrival to make me enjoy my football again.”

Ryan’s first Premier League goal had come against Newcastle, from a free kick in February 2007. It was the first of a few against the Toon.

“We played Newcastle four times in league matches. We won two of them one nil, one by 2-1 and drew the fourth 2-2. I scored in all four! It was perhaps not surprising that I eventually signed for Newcastle but I’m sure the goals were a coincidence!

“Even though I was leaving a Premier League club, going to Newcastle United was a massive step.

“Wigan might get eighteen thousand for a home fixture but at Newcastle I played my home debut against Everton in front of nearly fifty thousand at a time when we were struggling in the league.”

Ryan had made his debut two weeks earlier at West Bromwich Albion. It was February 2009.

“It wasn’t the best season for the club because they went down from the Premier League but we bounced back the following season as champions of the Championship. It was an amazing experience to play in front of such committed fans in a fantastic stadium.”

Unfortunately, injuries were to affect progress and, ultimately, they were a big factor in him leaving the club at the end of the 2014-15 season. He scored ten goals in 105 games but featured less than twenty times in his last three seasons at St James’ Park.

“Yes, injuries played their part. I was out for twenty-six months up to October 2014

Taylor knows League One quite well as he was voted into the PFA Team of the Year whilst playing for Tranmere Rovers in 2004/05.

with a cruciate knee ligament injury. It was in the Europa League. My comeback lasted just four games before I suffered after a challenge against Queens Park Rangers and had to go off. It was like “not again, I’ve worked too hard for this.”

His cult status at the club had been earned long before then when he scored ‘over the wall’ in Newcastle’s derby win at Sunderland in August 2011.

Soon after, he claimed the Match of the Day goal of the month with a strike against, of all teams, Everton.

Going into Fleetwood’s own derby today, he is aware of the importance of local rivalries.

“Those Newcastle Sunderland games were massive. The goal against Sunderland changed my life. There is always a lot of pride at stake for the clubs and the fans in derbies.

They are fixtures that are looked forward to all season.”

Ryan was released by John Carver, his last game for Newcastle being at QPR in May 2015.

Since then there have been brief spells at Hull City, Wigan and Port Vale and, most recently, abroad in the Indian Super League.

“Going to India was an amazing experience. There was a different pressure to play as the league is only five years old.

Football is just developing over there and the coaching structure is limited. I learned a lot about the culture and myself while I was there. It was an eye-opener but after three and a half months alone it was nice to come back to the family.”

Ryan was more than happy to sign for Fleetwood Town and former Newcastle team-mate Joey Barton when he returned to England.

“Since leaving Newcastle it has been about finding a suitable base. As soon as the manager told me he wanted me in his plans it was a no brainer.

“Football is all I know and I’ve spent too long recently watching games on Sky. Coming to Fleetwood has been perfect. My head is in a good place and that helps your whole game. I grew up in this league when I was 17 and 18.

I know what it is about.

“Obviously, I’ve known Joey a long time, even before Newcastle. We are friends and used to play golf together on off days.

I’m not surprised by his success so far in

management. He speaks well in the dressing room and looks comfortable in the role.

He has also got some experienced heads around him. I honestly think that it is the best dressing room I’ve been in through my career.

The lads are so together.”

With Premier League experience covering a decade, Ryan is well-placed to assess the standard at the top level.

“At League One level a striker may convert one out of three chances he gets but when you are in the Premier League mistakes get punished. Give a Premier League striker a sniff and he will score.

“I’ve marked the likes of Gareth Bale and Ronaldo but I would rate Arsenal’s Thierry Henry as my most difficult opponent. One guy I played with and rated was Hatem Ben Arfa at Newcastle but he hasn’t always made the most of his talent.

“As for the best ground, playing back at Anfield has always been a thrill. I would look up to where I stood in the Kop but it knew I had to remove the emotion from the occasion and concentrate on the job.”

Ryan’s ability to do just that can only benefit Fleetwood.

erry McPhillips became the Blackpool FC manager in August following the sudden departure of previous boss, Gary Bowyer.

Since taking the job permanently on September 10th, McPhillips has only lost one in his eight games in charge.

The 50-year-old began his football career in the youth team at Liverpool, before moving to Halifax Town in 1987 and soon scored a hattrick in the 3-3 draw against Carlisle United.

After his playing career, he made the move to Crewe in 1992 where he became Academy Director. 14 years later, he joined Blackburn Rovers, and after success in the academy, he became Gary Bowyer’s first team assistant.

He followed Bowyer to Blackpool as chief scout and assistant manager in 2016, and became manager two months ago.

ay Spearing, who started off his career in the youth set-up at Liverpool, is Blackpool’s one to watch today.

Spearing was the captain of the Liverpool Under 18s that won the FA Youth Cup in 2007, and with his impressive performances, he was given the nod to train with the first team. He went on to play over 50 games for the reds in his nine year tenure.

With loan moves to Leicester and Bolton Wanderers, he then signed for The Trotters on a permanent deal in 2013 and in his first season, he was named the Club’s Player of the Year, and the Supporters Player of the Year.

The 29-year-old joined The Seasiders in 2017 and scored two (and his only goals for the club) in his side 3-2 victory over Bradford City on September 8th 2018.

Academy Manager Ciaran Donnelly has been working close with Mike Hall, the Lead Coach of the Foundation Phase, to put together a 5-a-side tournament for all age groups within the academy.

This initiative was tested last season and received a lot of positive feedback from parents and players who were involved from the under 9s to under 16s, and from those who are involved within the local area at grassroots level.

The idea of this 5-a-side tournament is to help improve our players technical skills and when we see the player in a tight area, we really see this testing our players close control and reactions.

I believe this idea will really kick on and when we have trained players on the small 5-a-side pitches at Poolfoot Farm, we’ve seen that our players have had to think more about the game when they are playing, they are also having more touches on the ball, as well as having fun with their friends on the pitch.

We have amazing facilities on our door-step and if we take advantage of them, we will see development in our players going forward.

We had a trial run in September and it was a success with professional team from Blackpool, Morecambe and Preston coming down, along with local grassroots teams from the Fylde Coast.

The social interactions we’ve seen in this tournament is just one of the many things we look to focus on when players come into our academy. It is that communication on the pitch that is vital at any level of the game and when you have seconds to react or make a decision, this will only aid our players.

When looking at how this programme will be run, we will have two of our age groups playing at once with local teams invited down. For example, we will have our U12s and U16s down at Poolfoot Farm, then our U11s and U15s down the following week to take part in the round robin tournament. All of the games will be recorded and later down the line we will have a finals day, again giving players that competitive element, which we feel is very important.

It’s key we have that competitive edge to our training sessions as well as in games we play, and through this we hope children can learn how to handle winning, but also losing because we all have to deal with it. If we can teach them at a younger age, the better those players will be down the line.

The Community Trust have had huge success in recent years with the sports programme we delivered at Poolfoot Farm, and having looked back and assessed everything, we thought why not make it a sports college and expand our growth.

Fleetwood Town Community Trust are pleased to announce the launch of their brand-new Community Sports College. The college is based at Fleetwood Town’s elite training complex, Poolfoot Farm in Thornton, and what we are delivering is a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport.

Over the past four years, over 60 students have been on the course, with the new Community Sports College building on the success of previous years, whilst providing a pathway of education delivered by the Community Trust.

As a Community Trust, we are looking to provide a pathway; offering traineeships in employability, Level 2 and 3 BTEC awards in Sport to school leavers, followed by foundation degree’s in relevant sporting areas such as sports business and sports coaching. This is something we are really excited about.

As stated earlier, the BTEC programme has grown year-on-year with the past year being the most successful yet, with the students crowned National Champions in Futsal, and winning the North West 11-a-side league.

More importantly though is the classroom success. 100% of students last academic year completed and passed the course, and 85% of our pupils achieved on or way above their initial target grade. 71% progressed onto universities such as Loughborough, Manchester, Edge Hill and Lancaster, and we wish all those all the best on their next adventure.

The launch of the new Community Sports College will allow us to build on this success and grow our education provision further. Expanding our offer to encompass a further and higher education pathway into the sport and leisure industry for local students in the Wyre and Fylde community.

This will offer unique opportunities for ambitious football fans to represent and learn at Fleetwood Town Football Club, gain unique work experience opportunities within the football club and to gain industry recognized coaching qualifications. All of this will all help towards gaining university places, scholarships abroad and employment in the industry, which is what one of our aims is to do.

In my view, colleges have traditionally placed academic learning at the core of the curriculum, supported by employability for the world of work, but here at Fleetwood Town Community Sports College, we will ensure academic learning is intrinsically linked to our distinctive experience, which places character development and employability at the core of what we do.

Fleetwood Town head coach Joey Barton has been really supportive of this initiative and he fully endorses the work we do in the local community, and also with the launch of this sports college. He has met the students and given them a start of the year prep talk, and for our pupils, that was a nice touch for them on their first week back in class.
