ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match against Accrington Stanley.

We come into today’s game on the back of Tuesday night’s result against Leicester City Under 21s in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Naturally, we were disappointed to lose the game on penalties after being outstanding for 75 minutes. For us as a club, we can take plenty of positives from the game. We gave another 16-year-old their debut in the form of Dylan Boyle, Eddie Clarke made his first team debut, as well as players gaining valuable minutes under their belt. The main positive for me is that we outplayed our opponents throughout the match, with the key turning point in the game coming through a bizarre refereeing decision.

For me, I see today’s game against Accrington as our toughest test of the season so far. I know the coaching staff really well, and would like to welcome John Coleman, Jimmy

Bell and the rest of their staff to Highbury today.

Accrington were a real success story of last season, defying the odds and winning League Two and gaining promotion. We know this will be a difficult game, but we come into it six matches unbeaten in the league, having not lost since the opening day.

Last Saturday’s game at Sunderland was a real momentous occasion for the club, playing in front of more fans than people who actually live in the town! On the pitch, we dominated the game and were unlucky not to beat them. Everyone came away from Sunderland disappointed with a point, which is testament to where we are as a team, and where we are going. It’s also testament to the progress the club has made since Andy Pilley took over. The key for us is to test ourselves in those arenas week in week out, and for us to do that, we need to keep doing our habits.

to Highbury in form of Andy Mangan. Mangs is someone I know really well, and he’s still actually with Fleetwood as Under 16s coach, but he’ll be representing the opposition today.

I know he’s well respected at Highbury for his time at the club, and I’m sure he’ll get a great reception should he feature today.

It was great for us to have our highest away following of the season at Sunderland on Saturday, and I thank you in advance for your continued support today and next weekend at Southend.

On-loan defender James Husband is relishing the packed schedule of League One at Fleetwood Town and is looking forward to every game.

F

ive seasons after Charlie Taylor made such a success of the left-back position at Fleetwood Town, a friend from the Leeds United youth set-up is making his own impression in what has been a problem position in recent years.

Twenty-four year old James Husband has temporarily swapped the distinctive yellow and green shirt of Norwich City for Fleetwood’s red and white.

“I’ve always been a Leeds fan. I had the lot growing up - kits, posters on the wall, everything. I was a big fan of Ian Harte and the team that were in the Champions League semi-final in 2000-01. I came across Jonathan Woodgate when I was at Middlesbrough. It was quite surreal really.

I’d gone from having his picture on my wall to playing alongside him!

“I was at Leeds from the age of 8. I knew Cairnsy and Lewie Coyle although they were both in different age groups.

“Charlie Taylor and I battled it out at left back. I ended up leaving at 16 but he stayed on and has had a terrific career so far, including Fleetwood.

“I enjoyed school. I was a quiet pupil, well-behaved. They didn’t get much out of me. There were a couple of days a week when I was at school and training.

“It was an introduction to being a footballer. The football environment from when I was about 16 onwards brought me out of my shell. There are a lot of big characters and you learn to adapt. If you don’t you can fall by the wayside.”

The path through the club unfortunately ended when James was 16.

“When I was there I thought it was the real deal but it couldn’t be further from the truth. I didn’t even get my youth team contract at Leeds and ended up going straight to Doncaster.

“In hindsight it was probably the best

thing I’ve ever done. I went into digs for the first time but wasn’t far away from home.

After that I stayed at home and did a car share with Tommy Spurr. I got to know him well. In the Doncaster set up it was straight from youth team into first team.

“It wasn’t as high a standard as at Leeds.

It was more a Centre of Excellence. I did really well for the youth team. I scored a few goals and went to Sweden with them for the Gothia Cup. “I did play left wing a few times but always thought that my attributes suited left back. I did well to get a two and a half year contract because they were only offering a year or six months.

“I got mine offered at an early stage because I was nearly ready to play. In fact I think I played towards the end of the 201112 season. It was a very proud moment when I made my debut.”

I INTRODUCED MYSELF AS READY TO PLAY REGULAR FOOTBALL. I WAS NOW WITH A BUNCH OF MEN WHO HAD MORTGAGES AND KIDS TO FEED.

James came off the bench at Middlesbrough on 17 April and his cameo performance drew plaudits from Rovers manager, Dean Saunders, who said that it looked like he had been playing for ten years.

“I came on with about fifteen minutes to go. I wasn’t too fazed by it. When you are young I think you just go out and play.

It was a big compliment from the gaffer. I have to thank him a lot because he gave me

my chance and believed in me. He is quite a character. We had a good time for six months when he was there.”

Just four days later came the first start, against Coventry.

“I think they were struggling and already down. It was a pretty easy game.”

James started the following season with Man of the Match in a Carling Cup tie at Hull.

“I introduced myself as ready to play regular football. I was now with a bunch of men who had mortgages and kids to feed.

There was no hiding place. It was people’s livelihoods week in week out.”

James made 40 appearances in the 201213 season, including goals from midfield at Crawley and Shrewsbury.

“Tommy was playing behind me and had that bit of extra experience whereas I was trying to get in the team where I could. It was a memorable season. I was learning so much about being a footballer day in day out.

“I got a promotion at the first time of trying. I was on the bench for the final game at Brentford but it was still agonising.

“It was a memorable day and probably the first and last time we were able to experience something like that. I think we started third and came out first.

“It’s a day I will never forget. We didn’t want to play the extra three games but to be fair we thought we were the best side in the league and if we had to we would have been confident of going up.”

Tommy Spurr’s move to Blackburn gave James the chance to be first choice left back. In game three he scored a fortunate goal against them.

“It was a cross which went in. I said I meant it but there was no way I did!”

After 30 games that season, James moved on to Middlesbrough. He was still only twenty. The transfer involved a player swap and much-needed money for Doncaster.

“At Middlesbrough I was looking to play regular football under Aitor Karanka and take my career to another level. Despite not getting too many games it was a great experience to be at a former Premier League club. The facilities and staff were brilliant and I learnt a lot as a person and footballer.”

Over the next two seasons, James supplemented his game time with loan periods at Fulham and Huddersfield.

“At Fulham I properly moved away from home for the first time and loved it! I made lots of friends and did a lot of things I probably wouldn’t have done at home! I really enjoyed my football and had no worries about anything at the time.

“David Wagner came to Huddersfield and changed the whole way that the club operated.

He was very good in the way he treated people. I was there in the transition period and it was a whole new experience for me.

“Kyle Dempsey was there as well. By age 22 I’d played for four different clubs and couldn’t really argue with that.”

Back at Middlesbrough, James made his Premier League debut in a 4-2 defeat at Hull.

It was April 2017.

“I was supposed to go out on loan that year but ended up dislocating my shoulder. I couldn’t go anywhere, the manager got sacked and we ended up struggling for players.

“Getting thrown into the Premier League was a lot to ask after not playing for a year and it wasn’t my best game but no one can take it away from me.

I GOT A PROMOTION AT THE FIRST TIME OF TRYING. IT WAS A MEMORABLE DAY AND PROBABLY THE FIRST AND LAST TIME WE EXPERIENCED SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

“Don’t get me wrong, I can’t class myself as a Premier League player but I’ve been there.

“I achieved something that I wanted to do since I was very young and it was a proud moment for me and my family after working so hard over the years. It’s the stand out moment

of my career so far.”

James got a three year deal at Norwich for the start of 2017-18, making 21 appearances throughout the season.

“The intentions are to go up but the Championship isn’t an easy league. Clubs come down from the Premier League with parachute payments and it is really tough. I got a few games but was injured as well.

“I played the first game this season then got into conversations between Norwich and Fleetwood.

“I wanted to go and play football and this was the best option. I was wanted and that is a big part in players’ decisions. It wasn’t a case of ‘he’ll do’. I feel settled here.

“Three games in a week gave me no time to dwell on things. I’ve been in teams that have done well in this league and this one is up there.

“It helps that the club is used to winning.

With our collective unit and confidence around the place we have as good a chance as anyone.

“It’s nice that I’ve followed my mate from Leeds into the shirt. I’m here to do as well as I can till January then take it from there.”

J

ohn Coleman is the ninth-longest serving manager in all four divisions of the Football League. Having been re-appointed the Accrington Stanley manager in September 2014, he has seen the club rise up to the third tier for the first time in the club’s history.

Liverpool-born Coleman had a long playing career, and managed over 500 goals in a career spanned almost two decades. Starting at Kirby Town back in 1979, he made multiple move before ending up at Southport. With 49 goals in his 89 appearances, he was known as the prolific goal scorer in the leagues.

Ashton United was where Coleman got his first taste of management, and after two years, he then joined Accrington. In his 12-year tenure, he saw the club win three promotions, earning Football League status in 2006.

illy Kee has started off this season with three goals in six league appearances, and is looking to get close to his 25 league goal tally from last season, which helped Stanley win the League Two title.

Kee began his footballing career in Leicester City’s academy where, in 2008, he went on to score 14 goals in five matches, which didn’t get unnoticed from clubs in the football league. The youngster was loaned out to his current club Accrington after signing his first professional deal at Leicester. He scored his first goal for Stanley in their 2-1 win over Darlington.

With spells at Torquay, Scunthorpe and at Burton – where he scored 39 goals in 99 appearances, he moved back to Stanley in 2015, in a move that saw him flourish at the Crown Ground. 135 games later, he scored 57 goals!

The academy have had a great start to the new season and that comes from our lowest age groups right up to our under 18s and there is just a real buzz around the place which is one we as coaches, and the players are all buying into.

I’d like to start off by saying a huge congratulations to five players from the under 18s team who were part of the matchday squad on Tuesday night for the Checkatrade Trophy game against Leicester City U21s at Highbury.

It was another proud moment for myself and the academy to see James Hill, Dylan Boyle, Ryan Rydel, Jamie Cooke and Jay Metete be given the opportunity to experience first team football and be part of the players’ routine, right up to the close of play.

Three players – James Hill, Dylan Boyle and Ryan Rydel – made the bench for the game, with the other two joining in with the team and gaining valuable experience being in and around the first team. The trio on the bench deserved it and for Dylan to get 20-25 minutes, it will be a moment the lad won’t forget.

Dylan – a first year scholar - has impressed on and off the pitch in recent weeks and that is credit to the player himself. I know the Joey Barton said that things don’t go unnoticed and that is true.

When we look at the grand scheme of things, it has been a fantastic couple of weeks and months for our ever growing academy. James Hill got minutes under his belt against Leicester at the King Power in the Carabao Cup, and again what a moment for him and for everybody involved at the academy.

What all of this is doing is showing the players that there is a pathway into the first team. If you apply yourself correctly, that hard work and commitment will eventually pay off.

The under 18s also played on Tuesday against Rochdale. Unfortunately they lost 3-2 in Youth Alliance. With five players with the first team, this meant some under 16s could step-up and get a feel of what it is like to be at this level.

Sam Bird and Dan Smith stepped up and played really well. Barry Baggley is another player who excites us at the academy and for us as a team, we need to take the positives out of the game, and take them into the match this Saturday away at Grimsby Town.

COMMUNITYTRUST COMMUNITY UPDATE WITH FTCT’S MILITARY COORDINATOR DAVE WHITWORTH

Fleetwood Town Community Trust are working in conjunction with Royal British Legion to deliver a health, wellbeing, and fitness programme for military veterans, alongside current serving military families.

This programme is open to those who are eligible to join the army from 16-years-old, looking to help those come together and work with different people and groups throughout their legions.

The objectives of holding these military veteran programmes are to engage with as many of the local forces community as possible and to deliver wide ranging activities. This comes with participants selecting relevant charities to help and also to help groups for specific needs of those individuals involved.

We are constantly working closely with the local councillors and hoping to build relationships with medical centres, for those who do come away from the army or military serve in need of that specialist help.

At Poolfoot Farm – Fleetwood Town’s training ground - we host a weekly forces fitness session which take place every Wednesday between 4:30-6pm. This is great for our veterans as it helps keep them active both physically and mentally. We’ve had huge success since we launched this new programme.

We have a weekly fitness/sports session with the families at Weeton Army Barracks. Throughout the summer we delivered multi-sports for the kids on the camp.

TODAY’S MASCOTS

As staff, we feel it is very important to get out and about, and recently we took our troops on a trips to Liverpool and Manchester, and went to visit the military establishments & museums.

What I would like to share is that along with the club and the programme, we are inviting our veteran forces families to home matches for the 2018/19 season.

When I spoke to one of our participants, he told me that the environment that he was coming into felt like family. The camaraderie within the group was up there and for me as the co-ordinator that makes me so happy, because I know I am making their time enjoyable.

From myself, I would like to say: “The programme is proving to be successful & very rewarding. I feel like we are improving the lives of all the local forces community and will continue to engage with more veterans as we progress.

We have had resounding feedback from the project. including this quote from a Ex Royal Marines: “Thanks so much for the trip to Royal Marines Reserve HQ, we really enjoyed the camaraderie and family feeling,” and this quote from a Ex Royal Signals: “Thanks so much for the fitness help, we are getting older and need more care, thanks so much.”
