ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match against Bradford City.

It’s been a couple of weeks since we were last at home, and we’ve had a busy time on the road, with games at Scunthorpe, Charlton and Leicester. We’ve been on a great run in the league, and come into today’s game four unbeaten, after picking up four points against two teams who finished in the play-offs last year in Scunthorpe and Charlton.

Tuesday night saw us exit the Carabao Cup at the hands of Premier League side Leicester.

We made 11 changes to the team, with them making eight, but still having a team full of premier league experience and the score line reflected this difference in levels. Despite the scoreline, I must praise the players for sticking together and showing maximum effort to the cause, especially when you consider the calibre of opponents we were up against.

The match at the King Power Stadium was a special night for James Hill, our Under 18s captain. Aged just 16, James came on in the second half and applied himself brilliantly, and looked composed when marking the likes of established Premier League players Marc Albrighton and Demarai Gray. I know this moment is massive for our academy and their staff, after all the hard work they have put into James’ development. He did them proud, his family proud and his teammates proud and I’m sure it will be a night he will never forget for the rest of his life. Nothing at our club goes unnoticed, and if you are doing this correctly, it will be rewarded. We were also pleased to give debuts to Paul Jones and James Wallace, who both did well.

Since our last home match another two of our players reached an important milestone, with Kyle Dempsey and Ashley Eastham reaching 100 appearances for the club. Both Kyle and Ash

have been brilliant since I came to the club, and I know for both of them it was special to get to this landmark at Fleetwood Town. We must say congratulations to both players, who will have big parts to play if we are to have a successful year this season.

I’d finally like to welcome today’s opponents Bradford City, their directors, players, staff and manager Michael Collins. It will be nice to look across the dugout and see another young manager plying his trade, with myself and Michael the two youngest managers in the EFL. Enjoy the match.

Midfielder Kyle Dempsey is enjoying his time at Fleetwood Town after recently playing in his 100th game for the Cod Army in all competitions.

F

leetwood Town’s influential midfielder, Kyle Dempsey, walked out for his 100th game two weeks ago against Rochdale.

The milestone was reached less than two years after the 22 year-old joined from Huddersfield Town. During that time, he has become a firm favourite with the Cod Army who appreciate the energy and commitment that is shown game after game.

A career total of 175 games is some achievement for a player so young. It all started at Carlisle United, a club dear to the heart of this lad from Cumbria who could just as easily have been reaching milestones in rugby league with Wigan Warriors.

The decision, made some six years ago, owed much to the allegiance to all things Cumbrian and is proving to be a wise one.

“I broke through in my first full season at Carlisle in 2014-15 with eleven goals and ten assists. I had Keith Curle as manager. Keith was a massive mentor for me, giving me the confidence as a young boy to push on and play every game.

“On the back of that really good season I got a move to Huddersfield Town in the Championship. Even 24 games for them, having jumped two leagues, was a massive thing for me. Had I stayed at Carlisle I could perhaps have played over two hundred games by now but proved with Huddersfield that I could play at the higher level. In the end it just didn’t work with the new manager.”

“Chris Powell had signed me and I’d just begun to play well for him and get used to the Championship, with some starts. Then he was dismissed and David Wagner came in. I had a good relationship with David at the start and played a few games under him.

After an unbelievable pre-season I didn’t even get put on the bench for the first game.

Other players were wondering why. Perhaps there was a bit of a personality clash. From

that day on I knew that I couldn’t play another season in and out of the side.”

Fleetwood stepped in and Kyle moved across the Pennines on a season-long loan.

His debut came in the Football League Trophy at home to Blackburn under 23s with his League One debut the weekend after against Coventry City. Since then he hasn’t looked back, being a regular in the side under three managers.

“All managers are different. I played every single game under Uwe Rosler and had a really good relationship with him. It was the same with John Sheridan. I have got on really well with most of my managers.

“I came to Fleetwood for regular football and I’ve been fortunate to play in virtually every game that I’ve been fit for. The only time I missed games was the open wound from the Walsall game just before Christmas 2016 and even then I got back in less than a month, quicker than expected. At this rate I could be on for five or six hundred games by the end of my career.”

With his experience in midfield growing, Kyle surely stands to learn much on the art from his current manager.

“Joey has had an outstanding career as a midfield player. You always know that your game is going to improve under someone like that. In the last couple of months I have got back to my best and got my first assist on

the board against Oxford United. I feel that the fans are going to see a different side of me this year, hopefully with some goals. In previous seasons there have been glimpses of me breaking forward and fans have seen what I can do in the final third but that side has often been held back by the position that I’ve been asked to play in. I feel that I am a lot more mature for my age and can’t wait for the Cod Army to see a different side of me on the pitch.”

As well as Joey Barton to offer advice, Kyle’s game can also benefit from playing alongside Dean Marney and Jason Holt, who have graced pitches for Burnley and Rangers respectively.

“Dean and Jason have had outstanding careers and it is good to play alongside them. It will take my game on to a different level.

“You know that it will bring your own game on although I don’t see it as a massive thing because at the end of the day you have to deliver yourself as a player. I thrive on responsibility. I had a chance at Carlisle to captain the squad for several games, leading out experienced professionals and I enjoyed it.

“I have played in young midfields here and loved the responsibility of carrying others along so it is a good thing for me to be in this position for a change.”

Is the hundred match milestone important to him?

“Yes, of course. Statistics and targets are important for me and my game. I’ll aim to score ten plus goals in a season, for instance. I’ve got all my confidence back and genuinely think I can achieve that. When you do reach targets it makes you hungrier for more.”

Kyle has never missed an opportunity to praise the help that his family have given him.

“What my family do for me can easily go under the radar. From a young kid the amount of times they’ve been up and down the motorway for me has been incredible. I live in Maryport on the Cumbrian coast which is a long way from everywhere. Dad, Mum and two grandparents will come to each home game and Dad will try to get to away games that aren’t too far away.

“The amount of time he has sacrificed taking me up and down after work has been immense and my Mum has been incredible as well. She cuts hair virtually every hour of every day. For them to do what they have done for me I can’t really take in. I would have been absolutely knackered myself!

“It’s a massive credit to them and to my grandparents for keeping me on track. I’m just happy to repay them on a Saturday and when they tell me how proud they are it means everything to me.”

With several team-mates also within sight of the three figure total, it reveals a consistency of selection which benefits Kyle’s game.

“Yes, there are others like Ash Eastham, Cian and Cairnsy who have played a lot of

games alongside me. You start developing relationships and get to know when a player is going to make a move.”

Kyle was a big part of the team who almost reached the Championship in 2017.

I HAVE PLAYED IN YOUNG MIDFIELDS HERE AND LOVE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF CARRYING OTHERS ALONG, BUT NOW WE HAVE MORE EXPERIENCE.

“We gave everything in the play offs just lacked a bit of technical ability. It took Bolton to the last game to get over the line. We ground results out. I lost count of the mount of times we went 1-0 down and won 2-1, scoring late goals.”

In the early part of last season, Fleetwood were paired with Carlisle in the EFL Cup, a game full of poignancy for Kyle because of the part the opposition have played in his career.

He started on the bench but came on after an hour.

“When I came on against Carlisle I had a good game. It was the first time I’d played against them since I left Brunton Park. A number of Carlisle supporters said how much I’d developed in the three years since I left.

“It was great to hear that. If they can see me moving forward in my career that’s good enough for me. I will always have a soft spot for Carlisle.

“My career started there and it meant a lot for me. As a youngster you play a lot off the cuff, instinctively.

“You gradually over time develop a way to play and add things to your game, getting stuck in to the structure.”

The two games last season against Premier League Leicester City in the FA Cup also proved a lot to this ambitious young player.

“Playing against footballers worth thirty million pounds plus and never feeling out of place once in the two games told me a lot about myself and showed that I can play at what is classified as the highest level in English football.”

ichael Collins, born in Halifax, Yorkshire, was appointed Bradford City manager on 18th July 2018, a year after he was appointed the lead coach of the club’s Under 18s side. This is Collins’ first managerial job after a career expanding over 14 years.

Collins’ started off his professional career in the Huddersfield Town youth set-up and went on to play for the first team for six years. Collins’ scored in Huddersfield’s 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge.

He moved to Scunthorpe United on a threeyear contract in 2010 and then later joined the Indian first league with Bengaluru, and within four months returned back to the U.K. The 32year old has represented his country at Under 18 level up to Under 21s where he went on to score two goals in six appearances.

ack Payne has started off this season with two goals in five games, with strikes coming in 1-0 wins over Shrewsbury and Burton Albion.

Payne started off his career at Southend United where he was part of their youth academy. He made his professional debut in a 1-0 defeat against Yeovil Town in 2013 in the League Cup, and scored his first senior goal a month later in a 1-1 draw against Oxford United.

The 23-year-old joined Huddersfield in 2016 on a three-year deal and scored the first goal in the Terriers 2-1 win away at Newcastle in 2016. After loan spells at Oxford United where he scored seven goals in 34 appearances, he later joined Blackburn Rovers in the 2017/18 season before making the temporary move to The Bantams this summer.

The Under 18s have made a great start to the new campaign and for us as seeing our players making that step up to the first team is unbelievable. I just hope James Hill and the others who have been with us make the most of their opportunities.

James became the club’s youngest ever player on Tuesday night when he came on at Leicester in the Carabao Cup. For those that don’t know him, he is a well-grounded young man who has a great character, and a player who we hope will continue to develop with us with hopefully more opportunities to come further down the line with the first team. Credit must go to all the academy staff for their work in James’ individual development – Tuesday was certainly a proud night for us all at the King Power.

With players like James and Dylan Boyle, who also travelled to Leicester in midweek, it gives our other players hope and that aspiration to be better on the pitch, but also in and around the training ground. I watched Joey Barton’s post-match interview after the Leicester game and he mentioned about the lads constructing themselves in and around the training complex.

The above players and the rest have been superb since coming back from pre-season and the hard work we have

done really paid off, and with the result against our rivals Blackpool – who reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup last season –just showed what this team can do.

I felt against a strong Blackpool side that we created a lot of chances, and having taken the lead through Sam O’Halloran, we settled down and started to play more football which is what I like to see my teams do.

We didn’t get carried away once going a goal up and that is a credit to the boys. They were all communicating on the pitch and that is a massive learning experience and a huge part in the game.

That for me separates teams because of their willingness to guide and lead players to make sure the outcome they want is the right one.

I am so pleased with the lads. They are a pleasure to work with and I just hope we can continue to work hard because if we do, I know we will go on to have a really successful season.

COMMUNITYTRUST COMMUNITY UPDATE WITH FTCT’S NCS PROGRAMME MANAGER MICHAEL WILKINSON

In this matchday programme, we would like to explain more about our National Citizen Service (NCS) program which we are very proud of here at Fleetwood Town Community Trust.

The NCS program we deliver is for all pupils aged between 15-17-years old and it is for them to challenge themselves outside of their comfort zones. For us we feel this helps with the young adults gaining valuable skills for work in the future, and also life skills.

We take groups of Foundation Learning students out of Myerscough College for a week to give them an action packed experience. Most recently we went to Scotland for the week and the students and the club’s Under 18s and focused on team building exercises. One of the activities was a ‘Come Dine with Me’ challenge where they had to pitch their ideas to us, and then go and deliver that on a dish for us. I must say, they did surprise us with the quality of their dishes, but there were some questionable ones too!

The NCS program has three phases to it all and for us this really helps the staff focus on what they are going to deliver and will give us that end goal for those who participate. Phase one focuses on outdoor activities, and this allows those to challenge themselves with a range of adrenaline fueled activities such as kayaking, abseiling and archery. The time away from the classroom and home really opens up the pupils minds and it helps develop their skills for the next two phases.

TODAY’S MASCOT

With the next phase, the students will be reunited with their group in a university hall style environment and with this, we really wanted to focus on the children developing the life skills they took on board from the previous stage, and also become more confident within themselves to explore different avenues. Phase three puts all the above into practice and this is where the student will be given the chance to give something back to the community.

The group and I raised over £800 for the Alder Hay Charity – a charity which helps fund life-saving research – and this was a charity that was close to many of our students so for them to raise that money was huge and you could tell at the end how proud they were of themselves. It was an emotional fundraising campaign, but one we all know we be so proud of and know we have helped with funding money for a worthy cause.

On top of that, Year 11s from a local school helped raise money for Brian House and Mind Mental Health charity by doing a 24-hour dancea-thon, and a 600 mile bike ride (on the spinning bikes). This again was the group giving something back, and I just hope when the pupils leave us, they can keep this work up and be proud of what they are doing in the local community.
