Fleetwood Town’s Head Coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against The Dons...

ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s opening league match of the season against AFC Wimbledon.

On behalf of all the players and staff, I’d like to welcome everyone back to Highbury for the new campaign. For the management team, it’s our first game and our first chance to sample the atmosphere ahead of what we believe will be a really exciting season. If we are going to be successful, we need to make sure Highbury is a difficult place to come, starting today. We will need the lads on the pitch, but we will also need the support from the stands to help us achieve our goals.

Personally for me this is a fantastic opportunity to manage a great football club, and I’m incredibly grateful to the owner Andy Pilley for giving me this chance. The club have made incredible progress over the last 10-15 years and we hope to add to the recent legacy that has been building here, and we aim to keep that momentum going.

We will to what is already a fantastic period in the club’s history.

The players have come through preseason and are in fantastic condition, which is testament to the work done by the staff at Poolfoot Farm and in Hungary at our training camp. The players are a privilege to work with, and have completely bought into everything that we have asked from them. As you can probably tell we are really excited to get going today against AFC Wimbledon.

Every player we have recruited in the summer have fantastic attitudes and have bought into what we’re about at Fleetwood Town. They – like me – are excited about being part of this project and are looking forward to contributing positively. We also inherited a great set of lads, staff and people already at the club from day one and this has given us a chance to help create a positive working environment.

I’d finally like to welcome the opposition, and their manager Neil Ardley.

AFC Wimbledon have shown how important fans are, and it’s testament to their loyal support that they have come back from the split and now sit in the third tier. On-loan Preston North End defender Tommy Spurr is hoping for promotion this year and can’t wait to get started after a successful pre-season.

orkshire-born players played a big part for England in the World Cup and, a few weeks later, there are a number vying for places in Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town team. Alongside the likes of Alex Cairns, Lewis Coyle and Harrison Biggins is Leedsborn Tommy Spurr. Tommy is proud of his roots in the White Rose county.

“I’m definitely a proud Yorkshireman and still go home quite often. We are a close family. I try and get a game of cricket in the summer with my mates. I used to play all the time at school. I also watched Leeds Rhinos rugby league with Dad when season tickets were like twenty quid for under sixteens. That’s one tough game! I had no particular football heroes growing up. Dad played non-league for the likes of Frickley Athletic and Guiseley and I used to watch him at weekends.”

Tommy started playing organised football for Seacroft Colts, from the age of six.

“We used to go to tournaments in the summer, the usual stuff. I remember the Pontins and Butlins tournaments. We won one year which was good! The trophy will probably be in the loft at my mum and dad’s!

A scout asked me to go down for a trial at Sheffield Wednesday. Luckily Dad could take me. I signed from the age of eight. Dad carried on driving me after work three times a week which I massively appreciated. You realise when you get older how much time your family have put in for you, especially when they are working. Driving for an hour, stopping to watch training and driving back with me is a big commitment. I went to all Sheffield Wednesday’s games when they were in the Premier League.”

Tommy played for his local team in Leeds and school in Garforth as well as the Wednesday academy.

“I played centre midfield back then.

When I left school I went into digs which was

hard but Wednesday were good to me, to be fair. They were a bit short on money so let me travel from home when I had passed my driving test. I also got a bit of petrol money!

I was quite happy with that.”

After completing his two years as a scholar Tommy signed as a one-year pro full-time in 2004, under Paul Sturrock.

He established himself in the reserves.

He played alongside current Fleetwood goalkeeping coach, Dave Lucas, in a final against Manchester United reserves. “Lukes was recovering from an injury. He’s not changed, by the way!”

Tommy’s Championship debut was in April 2006. He was eighteen.

“It was a great moment. It was the last home game of the season against Reading who won the league with 106 points. I remember being stood in the tunnel thinking how big everyone was! That’s where I started playing left back. There were twenty-odd family and friends there to watch me! I got the sponsor’s man of the match but it was more of a sympathy vote for the young lad on debut! I’ll take it!”

I REMEMBER THE PONTINS AND BUTLINS TOURNAMENTS. WE WON ONE YEAR WHICH WAS GOOD! THE TROPHY WILL PROBABLY BE IN THE LOFT AT MY MUM AND DAD’S!

Tommy started alongside former Fleetwood defender John Hills.

“Hillsy helped me a lot but struggled with injuries. It was unlucky for him but a chance for me. Being a pro was tough. You were chucked into man’s football and it was

a completely different from the academy. A lot of people helped along the way and there were some good players in that team as well, the likes of Chris Brunt and Lee Bullen.

I made a lot of teas and coffees for everyone on away trips! Quite a lot of academy players came through around the same time. They include Mark Beevers, Sean McAllister and Richie O’Donnell. These were mates I’d grown up with.

“Hillsborough was definitely one of my favourite grounds to play in. The atmosphere was amazing. The hairs on the back of your neck would stand up every time you came out with the fans singing Hi Ho Sheffield Wednesday!”

Goals came in the 2007-08 season.

“The first was a header from a corner at Charlton in a 3-2 defeat. I just closed my eyes! I remember it bouncing in and not knowing what to do!”

The second was good enough to get Sky’s Championship Goal of the Season.

“I’ll never score another goal like that against Plymouth in April 2008. We were in the relegation zone and with the season nearing its end we needed summat from the game. A corner was headed out. I ran on to it, chested it and volleyed it. I wouldn’t even think about doing that now! We managed to get a point and I was just buzzing!”

Against Watford, Tommy came from a position with the ball fifty yards out on the left to score from eight yards, linking with Etienne Esajas.

“I remember just dribbling and dribbling.

Never scored a goal like that since!”

He sampled captaincy under Brian Laws, starting in February 2009 against Crystal Palace.

“The captain was injured but I was really grateful for the chance to lead the side. It was a proud moment at the club where I had grown up and come through.”

DID YOU KNOW? Tommy earned his first starting spot at Sheffield Wednesday ahead of former Fleetwood Town full-back John Hills in 2006.

5 A fifteen-year connection was to end in disappointment.

“Gary Megson didn’t like me. It was a bit of a sticky situation. He just decided that he didn’t want me and it got to the stage where I was told to stay away from the training ground. I was confused and upset because I hadn’t done anything wrong.”

It was an unfortunate end to a wonderful period with Sheffield Wednesday. In all, Tommy made 211 appearances for the Owls, scoring four goals. In 2011 he moved the short distance to Doncaster.

“I’d fallen out with football a bit and Doncaster was a bit of a shock at first. I’d never played in that direct way before. Some called them the Arsenal of the north. It was total football and I really enjoyed it. Manager Sean O’Driscoll gave me a chance and helped my confidence but moved on soon after. He was followed by Dean Saunders. It was a bit of a mess for a while. New signings came in and things were disrupted. We got relegated but a never-say-die attitude the following year got us promotion as League One champions.

Everyone pulled in the same direction and worked really hard, everyone knew their jobs-

much as it is at Fleetwood. We ground games out if we had to until it all boiled down to the last game, against Brentford. It was one of the best of my life. All I was thinking was I don’t think I can play another three games in the playoffs. I think I’d played every game that year.

INJURIES DEFINITELY HELD ME BACK AT PRESTON. I SNAPPED ME MEDIAL. IT WAS PROBABLY MY MOST SERIOUS INJURY. IT WAS SO FRUSTRATING.

“Our game plan had worked to a tee. The penalty in the last minute was a shock but to nick a goal at other end to win the league was wonderful. I always wanted to win something in my career. Having done it once, it makes you want to do it again. When everyone is hungry to do well you have to make the most of it.”

two of the founder members of the Football League. He joined Blackburn Rovers in 2013 and Preston North End in 2016, before coming to Fleetwood on loan. He played 84 times for Rovers in three seasons, scoring three goals.

“Blackburn was enjoyable but we missed a couple of chances of promotion. My contract ran out, I needed a change.”

Appearances at Deepdale were limited to twenty-five, due to injuries.

“Injuries definitely held me back at Preston. I snapped my medial. It was probably my most serious injury. It was so frustrating, particularly as the lads were doing well, and you just want to be a part of it.”

The defender joined Fleetwood Town on a season-long loan in June. It was the club’s fifth signing of the summer. His experience will be an asset to new manager Barton and I sense a determination to move forward after the injuries. There is still much to achieve.

“I’m quite a determined person. It’s a team game but I want to fight for and keep my shirt and be part of something successful. I’d love to go up and I hope it happens at Fleetwood.

I’m loving working with the lads and the coaches and can’t wait to start.”

eal Ardley was appointed AFC Wimbledon manager in October 2012. The 45-yearold (top right) joined The Dons from Cardiff City, where he was their academy manager for five years, where he played a major role in developing the Bluebirds’ highly regarded youth system. In his first season as a manager, he secured the Dons’ League Two position on the final day.

The Dons were Ardley’s first club as a player, and he went onto make 250 appearances for Wimbledon between 1991 and 2002, and then moved to Watford.

He was capped ten times by England at Under 21 level, and after over 100 appearances for the Hornets, he spent a season at Cardiff and Millwall, before becoming the academy manager at Cardiff.

nthony Wordsworth (bottom left) started off his career at Colchester United and has played for Ipswich, Rotherham and Southend. The left footed midfielder signed his first professional contract for the U’s in 2007 where stayed for seven season.

After a move to Ipswich in 2012, the freekick maestro only managed 18 league games in three years, however with loan spells to Rotherham and Crawley, the midfielder got a move to Southend, where he became an instant fans favourite.

In three years at Roots Hall, the midfielder managed to score a total of 18 goals in 76 league appearances and as he approaches 300 career league matches, he will be hoping to make that milestone happen in the blue shirts of The Dons.

I

t’s good to be back to Highbury for the 2018/19 campaign! Looking back over the summer, it’s been an eventful period for the Commercial team.

The Alfie Boe Concert was a great success, showing we are more than capable of managing Head of Commercial an event of that size and stature at Highbury. We hope to do more concerts in the future.

Joey Barton’s appointment has created a real buzz around the club, with staff and fans alike warming to Joey’s enthusiasm, drive, passion and sheer professionalism in the opening couple of months of his tenure. Everyone is genuinely excited for the upcoming season.

Hosting the World Cup at Poolfoot Farm was also a great experience for all the staff. It was the place to be for the World Cup, as thousands descended on the venue to watch England defy the odds and come close to getting to the World Cup Final.

Our fans trip to Budapest was again a successful trip – everyone that travelled embraced each other’s company. Joey Barton, the management team and the players were so engaging when we went to the Global training complex just outside Budapest, to bring fans and the club closer together.

Finally what a few weeks it’s been behind the scenes. Club partners have been revelling in the new era, with all of them renewing ahead of the new campaign. We also welcome a number of new partners and sponsors to join us this year.

The academy have enjoyed an exciting pre-season, and it’s fantastic that Joey Barton and his first team staff have welcomed us in ahead of the new season.

I believe the environment that we are working in is as good as it has ever been, and hopefully that will mean both the first team and the academy will have successful seasons. For me, all the right messages are being said on and off the pitch.

Joey has held talks with me about our young players because he believes in them, as we saw last Monday at Chorley. Seven players out of 11 who ended the game have come through the academy, so as you can imagine it was a proud night for the club. He believes they should be given an opportunity, but it’s important we look after them and help them perform to the best of their ability day in day out.

The Under 23s have been with the first team for the summer and that has been a huge positive. A lot of the players went on the pre-season tour to Hungary, where they all got valuable playing time, and got the opportunity to experience what it takes to be around the first team.

The Under 18s went to Scotland for a week, and took part in a number of activities around team building. This

has allowed not just them to get to know each other better, but also for the staff to find out their characters in more depth.

When I look at the younger age groups in the academy, the Under 12s went to Paris and they are only the second team we’ve taken abroad. It’s part of our long-term objectives to provide different experiences for our players, and taking them outside their comfort zones will only help them develop.

There has been some staff changes within the academy. Our Head of Sport Science Ross Jones left to join Rochdale’s first team been replaced, with the new candidate starting later this month.

Paul Murray has gone to Carlisle United and joins up with former first team Head Coach John Sheridan. Stephen Crainey has stepped up to be the Head Coach of our Under 23s, and we’ve reshuffled roles within the academy to put people in areas of strength, and this will help us keep the high standards we require.

The Community Trust have had a very busy off-season with schools coming to a close for the summer, however we don’t stop. There is still so much going on across the Wyre and Fylde.

The football season ended on May 5th at home to Walsall, but my staff and I have been out ever since delivering programs such as the Primary Teachers Award, The Joy of Moving Festival, and launching a new campaign, GULP (Giving Up Loving Pop), which has been well received and well promoted within schools on the Fylde Coast.

We have opened up three summer camps and so far they are been a huge success. One of the camps is held at Flakefleet Primary School, the other one is based at Thornton Primary School, and we have a Summer Soccer School at Poolfoot Farm Leisure Complex in Thornton. We have just finished our second week out of five, and as I am aware, there’s still plenty of availability on each of our summer camps. So if you haven’t already taken advantage of our daily summer sessions, don’t worry, there’s still time.

On the camps (as mentioned above), first team players like Bobby Grant, the Community Trust’s Ambassador and our Community Player of the Year has taken time out of his pre-season schedule to meet groups of children. Bobby has been fantastic for us and always has time for the community. He got involved in a penalty shoot-out competition this week

There has been some other good news over the summer. Chris Morton, who is our Girls Football Co-ordinator, won £2,000 for his Fleetwood Town Girls football programme. This was courtesy of SPAR in the UK, and this is an accolade I, and the whole team at the Trust are proud of. It just goes to show that the hard work we do within the local community doesn’t go unnoticed. This funding Chris received will go straight back into the programme to help us grow even more, and I am sure all the girls involved will benefit for us putting this back.
