Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for tonight’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Shrewsbury Town.

We come into the game following the postponement of Saturday’s game with Rochdale. I personally went and saw the pitch on Saturday morning and the referee made the right decision to call the game off. We can only control what we can, and ultimately that was out of our hands and we will now have to play this match later in the season.

The build up to our game today went well and we are all looking forward to a very competitive game against one of the best sides of the league. In recent weeks, we have had to learn some harsh lessons in how to get results over the line, but I’m sure that our team is learning from game to

game, to improve on that side of our performances.

Now to today’s opponents, Shrewsbury. They are a team who have been excellent all season, and Paul Hurst and his staff have done a great job in putting them in a position to challenge for promotion to the Championship. We had a close game at their ground earlier in the season - where we were more than equal in the game, and should have got a well-deserved point – we also faced them four times in all competitions last season, so we are aware of their strengths and weaknesses.

I’m sure that again we will be backed by superb support at Highbury – as we have had all season.

We need to turn the small margins in games in our favour, and the

supporters have a huge role to play in helping my team to succeed. We hope to repay the Cod Army with a positive result this evening.

I’d finally like to welcome Paul, his staff and players, as well as their supporters and directors to Highbury and wish them a safe journey home.

Defender Kevin O’Connor says he is delighted with his move to Fleetwood Town for the rest of the season.

The simple pleasures of life in county Wexford will always be close to Kevin O’Connor’s heart. It is where the Fleetwood Town full back was born in May 2015.

“I was brought up in Enniscorthy, a town about an hour and a half from Dublin.

“I enjoyed the countryside and the beach. It is definitely home for me and I love to get back when I can.

“My family come over to watch me when they can but it is harder when they are in another country and working as well. I’m trying to repay them for all their help over the years and make them proud of me.”

Kevin enjoyed other sports when he was young but knew that football was the one that he wanted to pursue.

“When you grow up in Ireland the main sports are Gaelic Football, hurling and football.

“I was still playing Gaelic until about eighteen years of age but knew that I could never play it full time. I supported Arsenal, like my dad, and 4 || 4

kicked a football most of the time with a Thierry Henry shirt on my back!”

Kevin’s early experiences in competitive football were certainly varied.

“I started as a goalkeeper but got fed up of it! I moved to left midfield and was up front a few times.

“In my first professional set up I played centre midfield but soon found left back.

“Being left-footed has certainly helped my game. I enjoy being a bit different.

“It gives balance to a side and has definitely worked out for me so far. I pride myself on my attacking ability but my priority is obviously to defend.

“I’ve worked a lot on set pieces so would like to keep those going given the chance.”

His first break came in 2013, at the age of seventeen, when he joined League of Ireland First Division side Waterford United. It wasn’t the best of starts.

“I gave the ball away in my first game and conceded a

goal in a 1-1 draw but went from strength to strength from there and Waterford were massive for my development.

“They gave me my first big chance and it was up to me to take it.

“The step up to men’s from youth football is definitely a big one.

“You are getting kicked around and have less time on the ball but I didn’t mind that at all.”

During his time at the club, Kevin had trials with Bournemouth.

“I went for a week, then back for another. Eddie Howe offered me a deal but it was a risk at the time.

“My opportunities would have been limited and I would have had to start afresh in a new country with a different lifestyle.

“I have no regrets, though.”

In the summer of 2015, Kevin joined Cork City, a Premier Division side managed by John Caulfield. It was a better start than at Waterford.

“I scored against St. Patrick’s Athletic in my first game! That was definitely one that will stick in the memory!

“I can’t thank John enough for his support. I came into a good side and it was a tough first season with and against better players but a big chance to test myself.

“However, I got to two cup finals and into the Europa League during my two years.”

Having finished second in the league the season before Kevin signed, he tasted European football for the first time as Cork went down to KR Reykjavik in the first qualifying round of the Europa League. There was to be better fortune the following season.

“We beat Linfield 2-1 on aggregate in the first qualifying round and met BK Häcken, who had just won the Swedish cup. We were brilliant out there and drew 1-1.”

It was a famous night at home as Kevin struck the only goal to take his side through.

“A free kick from the left came in to me and I swung it in on the volley.

We played Belgian side Genk in the next round.

“We lost 1-0 away but felt we should have got a result. They stepped it up for the second leg and had the likes of Wilfred Ndidi who signed for Leicester a couple of weeks later.

“It was a wonderful experience to add to play in Europe, though. One of the things you aim for.”

Although Kevin renewed his contract with Cork he moved to Preston on a three-year deal in June 2017, along with teammate Séan Maguire.

“I had come off the back of a good season but moved on out of necessity.

I couldn’t turn it down. Resources over here are so much different from in Ireland.

“It’s tough back home because, as the best players come through, they leave for football elsewhere.

“Also, most players sign one year deals in Ireland so they are soon out of contract and can go for free.

“It is important for Irish clubs to get money for players when they can to ensure survival and progress.”

After a debut in the EFL Cup in a defeat at Accrington, Kevin played eight Championship games for Preston.

“I particularly remember my first, against Aston Villa at home.

“Suddenly, there were players like John Terry around you who you had only previously seen on TV but you just had to put that to the back of your mind.

“The former Fleetwood lads like Ben Davies and Chris Maxwell had good things to say about Fleetwood and with my chances limited at Preston I was delighted to come here and aim for regular football.”

Kevin’s Irish eyes were smiling following a one million Euros win in the Irish lottery over Christmas, courtesy of a ticket given as a present by his uncle.

“The stick has died down now, to be fair. I just want to get on, keep my focus and achieve my ambitions in the game.”

After twenty minutes spent in the company of the twenty-two year old, I am left in no doubt that the man from Enniscorthy means exactly what he says.

Pompey welcomed Uwe Rosler’s men to Fratton Park in September and came out 4-1 winners, with the Cods looking for revenge against a side just outside the play-off places. MK Dons are the final visitors to Highbury in this busy month and with new manager Dan Micciche replacing Robbie Neilson a few weeks back, he will be waiting to pick up points to move his side away from the relegation zone.

Plymouth Argyle (pictured right) are after that, and they are on a great run at the moment winning their two last games, with one being a 2-0 win over high-flying Blackburn Rovers at Home Park.

Town’s next away match will be Doncaster Rovers (pictured left) on Saturday 17th February at the Keepmoat Stadium. The trip to South Yorkshire will see Rosler and his players wanting to pick up all three points after a 0-0 draw at Highbury.

Oxford United (pictured left) will welcome the red and whites to the Kassam Stadium, and with the 2-0 win for Town back in October, Town will be looking to get a maximum of six points over the Southern team. There’s now a new man in charge as Derek Fazackerley comes in as Caretaker Manager. A trip to Charlton Athletic awaits Fleetwood on Saturday 17th March. The Addicks sit just outside of the play-offs and with manager Karl Robinson at the helm, he has steadied the ship at The Valley.

His side won 3-1 earlier in the season with former Town loanee Tariqe Fosu bagging a hat-trick to ensure all three points for the away side.

Paul Hurst took the helm at Shrewsbury Town in October 2016, succeeding Micky Mellon.

Hurst started his managerial career at Ilkeston Town in 2009 after he was promoted from assistant coach, but quickly caught the eye of Boston United where he was manager for two years.

The 43-year-old then went Grimsby Town where in his fifth season, he earned promotion to the football league with a 3-1 victory over Forest Green Rovers in the National League play-off final.

That success saw him take the Shrewsbury job 15 months ago.

MANTOWATCH Today’s man to watch for Shrewsbury is their tricky winger Shaun Whalley.

The former Luton man has had a fantastic season with 8 goals and 11 assists for the Shropshire side from a wide position.

Whalley isn’t shy to take on a man with the 30-year-old having spent a lot of his careers with non-league teams such as Chester, Wrexham and Southport.

Luton called for his services in 2013, but was sent out on loan the following January, he picked up two winners medals that season with Luton and AFC Telford gaining promotion.

Ahead of this evening’s match against Shrewsbury, Craig Bratt asked Express and Star Sports Reporter Lewis Cox for his thoughts on all things Salop related.

CB: How much has Shrewsbury’s season exceeded expectations by?

LC: “By a million miles. Many neutrals, most in fact, touted them as pre-season relegation fodder but it became apparently after between six to 10 games that they were capable of much, much more. Boss Paul Hurst was always confident of achieving much more than that, he said that he and the players were determined to make bookies look ‘silly’, before a ball was kicked. They have certainly done that as, at the time of writing before last weekend’s game (Sat 10), they were sitting pretty in second. They are looking dead certs to secure a play-off position at the least and that would be a miracle season. Nobody would’ve given them a top six shot before the season started. Mid-table would’ve been a fine achievement. If they can continue the battle with Wigan and Blackburn at the top and push them all the way it will be akin to Leicester’s fairytale.”

CB: What has been behind their fantastic season so far?

LC: “Team spirit, determination, passion, togetherness. All of the boring cliched stuff has them above pretty much every other side this season. And it is not just spirit as a group - as individuals they are all determined to achieve something as most are playing at this level for the first time in their careers.

Being written off before the season had even started has, without doubt, spurred them on to do even more. When they lost at Blackburn and recently dropped out of the top two, it was about going again and proving people wrong...again.

They are the fittest team in the division, late goals show that - like against Fleetwood in October - but they can also play some stylish football and have talented individuals.”

CB: Last time out against Fleetwood, Shrewsbury took 90 minutes to break them down. What are you expecting today?

LC: “It would not surprise me. This team fight right until the death. The 89th minute winner at Bristol Rovers two Saturdays ago was the eighth occasion they had scored in the 85th minute or beyond this season. All goals have been decisive, seven have been winners and one has been an equaliser. They believe now that, whoever the opposition, they can out-run and out-battle them and nick it at the death.

Their away form has been commendable and is up there in the division. It is not quite as strong as their Montgomery Waters Meadow form and there is no doubt that a victory at a tough place to go on a undoubtedly cold Tuesday night will be another huge boost. Latest away wins at Portsmouth and

Lewis Cox Bristol Rovers have certainly upped belief on the road.”

CB: Who would you say has been the star man this season, and why?

LC: “It’s been a team effort. They are not reliant on one goalscorer and it has served them so well. Goals have been spread around both attack. midfield and defence and someone has almost come to the forefront and done the business.

Against Fleetwood in October it was defender Toto Nsiala, he netted that late late winner at Bristol Rovers recently too.

The back four have been superb. The defensive record is exceptional and they are so well drilled with very good goalkeeping options behind them. The wide men are key in both offensive and defensive positions - and have been added to in the January transfer window - while the central midfield three of Jon Nolan, Abu Ogogo and Ben Godfrey have been exceptional.”

CB: Do you expect Shrewsbury to finish in the top two? If not, why?

LC: “Nobody can expect them to finish in the top two when there are clubs around them able to put in resources a top flight club would not bat an eyelid at. Wigan and Blackburn should be the top two because of what they are able to bring in but the challenge is for Town to do it as the underdogs.

The aforementioned duo have not been able to shake off Shrews all season, in fact Rovers and even Wigan have spent a large part of it gunning Hurst’s men down. I personally believe Town have a chance at it. The management remain very coy on the situation. There are so many twists and turns yet but in recent weeks Blackburn have shown they are not untouchable and, if Town can continue their consistent form then anything could happen.”

COMMUNIT YTRUST Community Trust wins funding to help get MENACTIVE!

A pioneering project by Fleetwood Town Community Trust to help local people on a low income become more active and healthier has won backing from Sport England.

Full Time

Fleetwood Town Community Trust (FTCT) is a vibrant and active charity that aims to improve health and well being of children, young people and adults through sports participation and to raise the aspirations and skills of people for a better life through our learning and programmes has been awarded £9,731 funding as part of Sport England’s strategy to improve people’s health and mental wellbeing through sport and activity.

Sport England is funding a wide range of projects around the country, using varying approaches to help people to feel healthier, happier, more confident and able to cope with life’s pressures, or more connected to their families and communities.

Sport England research[i] shows that a third of people on low incomes are inactive, meaning they do less than 30 minutes of exercise that gets them slightly out of breath each week. And inactivity in people on a low income is twice that of people on a high income.

The MENACTIVE project will involve a rolling 12 week physical activity programme which will be delivered 4 times per annum from Poolfoot Farm Sports & Leisure Complex and this will be complemented by an additional weekend programme

to maintain continuity and sustainability. This project will tackle issues such as poor diet, obesity, heart disease, cancer prevention as well as addressing men’s mental health.

Fleetwood Town Community Director, Matt Hilton, said: “Men with healthy lifestyles are stronger, more energized, happier, more motivated, loyal and committed to their families and their work. Therefore this project will create an opportunity for men to shift their relationship with health from something they think about to something they practice daily through lifestyle habits. Consequently, this project will tackle issues such as poor diet, obesity, heart disease, low physical activity levels and cancer prevention as well as addressing men’s mental health through the delivery of an innovative outreach physical activity programme which will be located within one of the most deprived areas of our community”.

Sport England Executive Director, Mike Diaper, said: “ Fleetwood Town Community Trust has a strong track record of working with their local community and we’re very excited by how their project could make such a positive difference to people’s lives.

Fleetwood Town’s under 18s have completed the signing of young midfielder Jakub Bartosinski.

Known as ‘Kuba’, the Polish youngster has signed a professional contract with the club, and will finish the season with Nathan Rooney’s under 18s after gaining international clearance from the EFL. Jakub said on officially signing for the club: “I am happy to be here and look forward to developing as a player under the great coaching staff at the club.

“I have really enjoyed being here since pre-season and want to continue improving every day.
