ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Emirates FA Cup third round tie against Leicester City.

We have just come out of a busy Christmas period, where we picked up two wins in our last three matches.

We have played Bradford City – who are a top team in our league – in the last 18 months, six times and I think the performance this season with our away 3-0 away win and the home performance last Monday, was the best performances of them all, against such a strong team. I was happy with the way we competed and created, and we just came short on handling two key moments in the game, for example the set piece in the second half. We must give credit to the players, the staff and especially our sports science and

medical department, because of the way they prepared the players for such an intense match programme.

There is no doubt that today’s match is a special occasion in our football club’s history. Not only is it just the third time that we have ever been in the third round of the FA Cup, but it’s also the first time we have ever played a Premier League club in any competition. We also welcome back Jamie Vardy to Highbury, whose career is an inspiration to everyone involved in our football club. The match is live on BBC One, with an expected audience of five million people, so the eyes of the world are firmly on Fleetwood Town today!

It goes without saying that we are aware of the qualities that Leicester City possess. Only two seasons ago

they won the Premier League, with most of that squad still at the club now, so we know the challenge that we face, and it is one that our young squad is really looking forward too, and the only pressure we should feel is the pressure to perform to our maximum ability.

I’d finally like to welcome Claude Puel, his staff and players, as well as their supporters and directors to Highbury and wish them a safe journey home.

Leicester have become one of the most talked about football clubs in the world over recent years after winning the 2015/16 Premier League title.

The Foxes’ have a squad packed full of top European talent, as proven by their Champions League success last year when they reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

The Foxes were formed in 1894 and have and spent all bar one year of their existence in the top two divisions of English football.

The club gained promotion from League One in 2009.

Then, five years later they were celebrating again as they finished top of the Championship table.

In their first season back in the Premier League the Foxes survived relegation in dramatic fashion.

With just nine games left the club were seven points from safety, but won seven of their remaining games to beat the drop.

Claudio Ranieri was appointed manager ahead of the new season and with Leicester priced at 5000/1 to win the league, many thought they would be involved in a relegation dog fight. However, the Italian established a determined and talented squad who managed to win the Premier League title for the first time in the club’s history.

Along the way, striker Jamie Vardy made history by becoming the first player to score in 11 consecutive Premier League games.

The Foxes have also enjoyed success in cup competitions and have won the League Cup on three occasions, the most recent of which came in 2000.

The 56-year-old Frenchman was appointed Leicester manager in October 2017, following the departure of Craig Shakespeare. Despite having a reputation for being a defensive-minded coach, Puel has created a free-flowing attacking team at the King Power Stadium. He began his coaching career at Monaco, whom he represented as a player. Puel was a one-club man throughout his career and made over 600 appearances for Les Monégasques, winning the French title on two occasions. Having picked up a number of pointers from Arsene Wenger, (whom he played under as a player) Puel seemed destined to move into coaching, something he did after his retirement. Puel initially began as reserve team coach at Monaco before progressing to become manager of the first team and guided the club to the Ligue 1 title and the French Cup in 2000.

He left Monaco a year later and enjoyed a successful managerial career in France with Lille, Lyon and Nice. Puel’s undoubted highlight during that time was guiding Lyon to a Champions League semi-final in 2010. The Frenchman also managed Southampton before moving to The Foxes.

Yet the club have been slightly less successful in the FA Cup. Leicester have never won the world’s oldest cup competition but have been beaten in the final on four occasions, the last of which came in 1969.

Leicester have failed to make it past the fifth round of the competition since 2012.

Last season the club were knocked out in the fifth round by Millwall having previously defeated Derby.

PLAYERPROFILES An in-depth look into some of Leicester City’s key players from the 2017/18 season.

KASPER SCHMEICHEL - GOALKEEPER Schmeichel has become one of the Premier League’s most reliable and dependable goalkeepers in recent years. Following in his father’s footsteps, Kasper and Peter Schmeichel are the only father-son duo who have won the Premier League title. The Leicester stopper emerged through the Manchester City youth system but only made seven senior appearances for the side.

Following successful spells with Notts County and Leeds United, Schmeichel moved to Leicester in 2011. He was voted both Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year in his first year at the club and the following campaign helped Leicester gain promotion to the Premier League. In his first year back in the England’s top division, Schmeichel struggled with injuries but returned to the team in March and his stellar performances helped Leicester avoid relegation. During the Foxes’ 2015/16 title-winning season Schmeichel was an ever-present and he kept 15 clean sheets (the second most in the league). Since then he has maintained the same level of performance and saved a penalty in both legs of Leicester’s last 16 Champions League tie against Sevilla last year. Schmeichel’s has also become his country’s first choice in the past few years. The 31-year-old has earned 31 caps for Denmark and will most probably be at this summer’s World Cup.

CAPTAIN - WES MORGAN - DEFENDER “Captain Morgan” embodies everything about Leicester’s remarkable rise.

After being released by Notts County at age 15 it appeared Morgan would never become a professional player and he even enrolled on a business course.

However, his impressive performances for Dunkirk, in the Central Midland League, earned him a trial with Nottingham Forest. Morgan eventually signed for the club, who sent Dunkirk two Forest kits as a transfer fee. The defender represented the Midlands club for eight years, in which time he made over 400 appearances. He is still considered a Forest legend and was part of the side who gained promotion in 2007/08. Morgan moved to Leicester in January 2012 and within a few months of the transfer was appointed club captain. Since moving to the Foxes, Morgan has continuously improved as a player. The towering centre-back is one of the strongest defenders in the Premier League. His physical presence has proved to be invaluable at both ends of the fields. Morgan helped Leicester gain promotion in 2014 and two years later captained his side to their only Premier League title. The defender was a vital component of a defence which conceded just 36 goals, and he formed a formidable centre-back partnership with Robert Huth. Morgan played every minute during the Foxes’ title-winning season and was voted in the 2015/16 Premier League PFA Team of the Year. He has maintained the same level consistency in recent years and has played every Premier League game for Leicester this season.

RIYAD MAHREZ - WINGER

Albrighton has become of one England’s most skilful and consistent wingers in the past few years. The midfielder came through Aston Villa’s youth system having signed for the club at the age of eight. He went on to play over 100 games for his boyhood club before joining Leicester in 2014. In his second season with the Foxes, Albrighton played every game as he helped the club win their first Premier League title. His work rate, passion and natural ability in 1v1 situations made him a constant feature of Ranieri’s title-winning side.

Since moving to Leicester, the 28-yearold has adapted his game to feature more prominently on the left-hand side and is still a vital part of the Foxes’ side.

Few could have predicted the Algerian winger’s rise since moving to Leicester in 2014. Mahrez was sold by Le Harve for a meagre £400,000, however, today he is considered to be one of the most technically gifted players in the Premier League. During Leicester’s title-winning campaign, the wide man scored 17 goals and provided ten assists. At times he has demonstrated an almost telepathic relationship with striker Jamie Vardy. His outstanding performances saw him named PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award and was voted African Football of the Year. After a mixed season last year, Mahrez is once again playing with his old verve, passion and skill.

This was evident in the Foxes’ last outing against Huddersfield, when the winger scored a beautiful curled shot.

STAR MAN - JAMIE VARDY - FORWARD The England striker could be in for a heroes welcome when he returns to Highbury this weekend.

Vardy has become one of the world’s most famous footballing stories since his rise from non-league to the Premier League. The striker cost a non-league record £1m, when he signed for the Foxes in 2012. The fee received is still a club record for the Cod Army. Vardy was part of the side who won the Conference in 2012 and the striker netted 31 goals in all competitions during the season.

Since moving to Leicester, Vardy has improved his game even further and he has helped the club gain promotion, avoid relegation and then incredibly, win the Premier League. The striker registered 24 goals in the 2015/16 season, including breaking the record for scoring in the most number of consecutive Premier League matches. His goal against Manchester United in November 2015 saw him set a new record of 11. The accolades kept coming for Vardy and he was named PWA Footballer of the Year as well as being selected in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2016. He has continued his magnificent performances this season and has registered 10 goals in 23 games this season. Vardy’s lightning pace, composure in front of goal and his unrelenting passion means he is now one of the most deadly strikers in the Premier League. In recent years Vardy has also become a regular England international and will likely be a part of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad this summer.

ADRIEN SILVA - MIDFIELDER 14 seconds can be a long time in football, just ask Adrien Silva. The Portuguese midfielder joined Leicester on Transfer Deadline Day last summer, but as the official documents reached FIFA 14 seconds late, he couldn’t be registered to play for the Foxes. As a result, Silva has had to patiently wait for his registration to be completed, something which finally took place last week. The midfielder made his Premier League debut in the 3-0 victory against Huddersfield last week and could get his first taste of FA Cup action this weekend. Silva came through the youth system at Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon and went on to make over 200 first team appearances.

His skill on the ball and ability to dribble past players has made him a regular in the Portuguese national squad and he was part of the side who won the 2016 European Championships.

Silva played all four of his country’s knock-out games, including the final against France.

Ahead of this afternoon’s match against Leicester City, Craig Bratt asked Leicester Mercury Sports Reporter Rob Tanner for his thoughts on all things Foxes related.

CB: The obvious story from this match is the return of Jamie Vardy to Highbury. Do you think Leicester’s star man will feature, and if so, how much do you think he’ll relish the opportunity?

RT: “I think Puel will rest a lot of his regular starters for the game after the hectic Christmas schedule and Vardy will be one, but I would thought he would be urging Puel to put him on the bench for a little cameo.”

CB: Do you think Claude Puel will play a full strength side or mix things up in the starting XI?

Rob Tanner CB: Aside from the big name stars such as Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, who is a lesser known name that may feature that Fleetwood should be aware of on Saturday?

RT: “All eyes will be on Silva if he does play. He is a European champion with Portugal and has been forced to kick his heels since August as FIFA withheld his registration because they transfer documentation for his move from Sporting Lisbon arrived 14 seconds after the deadline.”

RT: “He will have to mix things up after the Christmas fixture pile-up and there are some players who need game time after being left out. Adrien Silva could make his City debut as it is the first game he will be eligible for. Some of the young professionals could also feature.”

CB: Given the Foxes we’re knocked out of the cup last season by League One side Millwall last season, do you think Fleetwood have a chance this time around?

RT: “Absolutely they have a chance. City won’t be at full strength and if their attitude isn’t spot on then Fleetwood could capitalise.

They will be up for taking on former Premier League champions on their home patch and I think it has been chosen for television coverage because of the potential for a shock.”

CB: Leicester’s away form this season has been good.

What’s behind City’s success on their travels?

RT: “They are a very good counter attacking side. They like to break on teams who over commit and utilise the pace of Vardy, Marc Albrighton, Demarai Gray, and the trickery of Mahrez, to catch teams out. Defensively they have been okay but have a weakness defending from set pieces.”

CB: What is your prediction for the match?

RT: “I think City will win but I think they will know after the game that they have been in a match. The home fans will be right on top of the visitors and some of the City players may not be used to such an environment, so it will be a difficult test for Puel’s men.”

We step back in time and looks at the prolific 2011/12 Fleetwood Town squad, and their success in the Conference.

The quote in the title came from former Fleetwood goalkeeper, Scott Davies, when reflecting on the 2011-12 season. It was Fleetwood Town’s second in the Conference. The year before, Micky Mellon’s team had reached the play-offs.

There were plenty of pundits and fans who believed that the side could go even further in 2011-12 and earn promotion to the Football League. The squad had been strengthened over the summer with the signings of a number of players proven at Conference level. Andy Mangan’s goals had taken Wrexham to the play-offs in 2011.

against Darlington, was a huge blow and early season was dogged by a number of other injuries. On 23rd August, Fleetwood headed to long-time rivals Barrow. It was to be a sorry night at Holker Street. A record of no goals conceded up to that point was blown away as the hosts scored four. Perhaps the most worrying aspect of the game was that Fleetwood did not look like scoring. With a multimillion pound stand recently erected at Highbury, the Chairman was aware of the need to push for promotion and it had not been the ideal start to the campaign.

Midfielder, Keith Briggs, was Kidderminster’s captain while winger Peter Till and striker Richard Brodie had both been at York City. The defence was bolstered by the arrival of Grimsby Town skipper Rob Atkinson.

Just three days later, York City visited Highbury. Within that period, Andy Pilley had made arguably the most significant and brave decision of his tenure. Jamie Vardy had been on many clubs’ radars over the summer.

An opening day victory at Grimsby Town eased supporters’ concerns after a barren pre-season in front of goal. The loss of influential midfielder Anthony Barry, injured in the first home game

His goals per game ratio for Stocksbridge Steels and FC Halifax was better than one every two games. The signing was completed on the day of the York match and Vardy was catapulted straight into

the team. The impact was not immediate. There were signs, not least his pace, but York and Wrexham both kept a close watch on him over the Bank Holiday weekend. At the end of August, Fleetwood lay 11th in the Conference table. It was to be their lowest position.

Vardy properly introduced himself at Kettering Town at the start of September. Two first half goals set Fleetwood on their way. His arrival into a squad affected by injuries and lack of goals was a much-needed shot in the arm.

In the following six games, Fleetwood scored nineteen goals.

Vardy’s presence inspired quality players around him. His blinding pace caused problems wherever he went. He pounced on defensive hesitancy and produced a stream of assists for his fellow strikers. As Andy Pilley commented, ‘There was anticipation that something was going to happen every time he got the ball.’ Both Vardy and Brazilian Magno Vieira scored five goals in September but none was more spectacular than Mangan’s stunning strike at home to

Gateshead on 10th September.

The chirpy Scouser scored from anything up to 35 yards, depending on who you are listening to! It was a confidence-boosting win against a side who had started well. By the end of the month, Fleetwood had risen to third.

Each season features pivotal games and for Fleetwood in 2011-12 the visit of Newport County on 11th October was to prove to be one such case. It was a nailed-on three-pointer, featuring an unbeaten side at home against a team yet to win away.

Vardy was back after four games lost through suspension and injury.

Gareth Seddon scored an opening goal in the first minute. What could possibly go wrong? No one expected a 4-1 defeat, a result which, in the words of assistant manager, Craig Madden, gave us a ‘kick up the backside’. And how! What followed was to break the backs of all other potential champions as Fleetwood set off on a 29-match unbeaten run.

There were some glorious moments along the way. Fans will each have their favourites. Just a week after Newport, Vardy tore the Alfreton defence to shreds with a hat trick on the road in a 4-1 victory. On New Year’s Day he inspired his side to a 6-0 thrashing of Southport at Haig Avenue. As Stadium Announcer, Rod Allsworth, put it, ‘Vardy was unplayable that day.’ Another hat trick came in a 6-2 home win over Ebbsfleet in February, including a sumptuous strike off the outside of his right boot after cutting in from the right flank. There were goals galore from Vardy while his fellow strike force of Brodie, Seddon, Vieira and Mangan were to score fifty goals between them. As the season drew to a close, Fleetwood headed for all sorts of Conference records.

Of all Vardy’s 31 goals, one that sticks in the minds of both Chief Executive, Steve Curwood, and Vice Chairman, Phil Brown, was a late strike against Grimsby Town in early March. He struck a ball from a tight angle on the left, and off-balance, to give his side a late winner against a team riding high on confidence. It helped calm nerves as Fleetwood moved closer to the Holy Grail of the Football League.

A century of points was reached with Brodie’s 73rd minute goal which split the teams at York City in early April. The title was Fleetwood’s if they could beat nearest rivals Wrexham at home three days later. Wrexham were in no mood to lie down, neither were Lincoln in the following home game.

Two draws left Micky Mellon’s team tantalisingly close. The title was eventually secured elsewhere as Grimsby substitute, Andi Thanoj, added his name to Fleetwood folklore with a late equaliser at Wrexham. That midweek defeat at Barrow seemed a long time ago. 31

wins, 103 points, 102 goals. The Cod Army were living the dream yet again, their fifth promotion in seven years.

This most successful of seasons was marked by a memorable FA Cup run. In the First Round Fleetwood faced Wycombe Wanderers, who included 15 year-old Jordan Ibe, on the cusp of joining Liverpool.

A 2-0 win against FA Cup semifinalists from just ten years ago was Fleetwood’s first against Football League opposition. A Second Round replay at Football League side Yeovil Town had the added incentive of a home tie against Blackpool in the Third Round.

No one who made the long journey that evening will forget the euphoric scenes among the Cod Army as Vardy inspired his side to a 2-0 victory. It was a giant-killing act against the most notable of giantkillers themselves.

Fleetwood’s Head of First Team Operations, Will Watt, was reporting the Blackpool game for The Gazette, ‘Vardy was doing well

in the Conference and catching the eye. The question was could he step up to a higher level? Blackpool had just been relegated from the Premier League and in Ian Evatt and Alex Baptiste had a central defensive partnership who had dealt with Premier League attacks.

Jamie ran them ragged.

‘For his goal he outpaced Baptiste and finished fantastically. Everyone who left Highbury that day agreed that he could play at a higher level.’

Fleetwood lost 5-1. It had been their first appearance in the Third Round. Today’s is their third. Jamie Vardy’s return to Fleetwood Town with Premier League Leicester City will bring back memories of a few glorious months in which a rare talent galvanised a team brimful of talent and character. In the words of kit manager, Danny Moore, ‘Vardy was always willing to have a laugh and there was plenty of banter with the lads.

The squad looked after each other and Jamie was very much part of that.’

‘My overriding memory was that it was, like, the best days of your life. We played together, socialised together and did everything together. I remember that I didn’t let one in for the first three games then we conceded the four at Barrow. A point against York and defeat against Wrexham over the Bank Holiday and I was beginning to wonder where we were going. Then we won at Kettering. We were three-nil up and held on 3-2 and never looked back. We didn’t stop until we won the league. I was really enjoying my football. We had a mentality that if you score we will score more.

When things went against us we always had the means to turn it round. We’ve all played in teams where it doesn’t happen like that. There were some big characters like Steve McNulty and Pondy at the back, Jamie McGuire and Peter Cavanagh.

Everyone contributed. Alan Goodall was the one who went under the radar but did a great job. We could probably have fielded two different teams and still won the league.’ - Scott Davies ‘When you look at the squad there was fantastic character and talent. Everyone knew what they needed to do to win the Conference and wanted to push each other on. Any team needs a top goal scorer, that superstar who was going to take you over the line in games that weren’t happening for us. We had one in Jamie Vardy. When he first walked into that dressing room he knew he was coming into a very good team. The first game he did what he had to do. He was ok. We got players back for the Kettering game where he first made his mark. Andy Mangan’s assists and goalscoring were phenomenal. When we were bang at it we were bang at it. I reckon that team were better than the one that went up through the play offs. If we had kept Jamie Vardy with everyone fit we could have won that League Two title without a doubt. Yeovil in the FA Cup replay was one of my favourite Fleetwood games. To score and have Blackpool next up was brilliant. I remember incredible scenes at the ground and in the hotel afterwards! - Jamie McGuire ‘Some of the players we had were way above Conference level at the time.

We played some brilliant football and had a good mixture of qualities. People wanted to try and kick us but we always gave it back because we were quite aggressive as well. We hung in some times but always had enough to get through difficult games. It wasn’t all about Jamie Vardy but you knew that in every game he could either score a goal or lay on a chance for someone else.

I loved the banter we all had between us and the private boxing matches in the dressing room!’ - Nathan Pond “There have been any number of good players at Fleetwood but Vards was the best.

Our team played some good football and scored a lot of goals. It was a together team. Fantastic team spirit drove us on to win the league. We had leaders throughout and a lot of talent. A sprinkling of magic dust was dropped on us when Jamie Vardy arrived. He always played with fire in his belly. We were really good for each other and enjoyed a fantastic partnership up front. We were both really quick and it was a delight playing with him. Gateshead at home was a massive win. They were top of the league, unbeaten. My goal was one of my best ever. Vardy scored the other two. It gave us a lot of confidence and we went on to a different level. Vards is so down to earth.

We are still friends and see each other. You need big characters to win leagues and he was one of them. He was hilarious in the dressing room. I am full of admiration for what he has done in the game. He has given people hope with his academy and become a wonderful role model.”- Andy Mangan

PADDYMADDEN SIGNSFORTOWN Fleetwood Town are delighted to confirm the signing of prolific striker Paddy Madden on a two-and-a-half-year deal from fellow Sky Bet League One Scunthorpe United.

The 27-year-old joins after a successful five years at The Iron, with the club paying a six-figure fee for his services.

Madden has scored 113 goals at an average of just one every two starts, in a career which has seen him impress at Carlisle United, Yeovil Town and Scunthorpe, with the clinical attacker now putting pen to paper on a deal at Highbury.

The striker – who in known as one of the most clinical finishers in League One – joined from Scunthorpe United for a six-figure fee after five years with The Iron.

Madden will join up with his new teammates straight away, and says he is already looking forward to working under Uwe Rosler.

“I’m delighted to be here, and I can’t wait to get going,” said Madden.

“I’ve been speaking to the gaffer and he shares the same opinions and plays the way I like to play, and knows the way I like to score goals.

“Fleetwood put a lot of interest in me and kept ringing every day and I’ve jumped at the opportunity to be here.

“I’m over the moon to sign.”

The Irishman has scored over 100 goals in spells at Carlisle United, Yeovil Town and Scunthorpe, and is looking for more at Highbury.

“I’m looking forward to a fresh start. I’m hoping to score goals here, like I have done everywhere else,” added Madden.

“I like to get in behind, and play on the last shoulder of the defender and try and get as many goals as I can, as well as creating goals.

I’ll give everything in every game, and I’ll never drop my work rate. For me work rate is the most important thing and then the rest will follow.”

The Irishman will wear the number 17 shirt.

Alan Goodall, made 34 appearances for Fleetwood Town in the 2011-12 Conference-winning season.

During his time at Highbury, Alan played 88 times, scoring four goals. His last game was at Wembley in the League Two play-off final against Burton Albion.

Alan recalls a season alongside Jamie Vardy in conversation with Paul Collier.

I have to admit that I hadn’t heard of Jamie Vardy and didn’t know anything about him when he joined the club in late August 2011. That said, some of the other lads did know about him and were well aware of his goal scoring exploits.

At a first training session when a new player comes in you sort of get the feeling of how they are and the kind of personality which they have. You could tell straight away with Vards that his attitude on the training ground reflected him. He got his head down from day one and he was hardworking. We found out pretty quickly what sort of character Jamie was.

After a couple of days he was just his normal self. He was loud and he loved the banter because he was a confident

lad. I think Jamie just wanted to show us what he could do at the training ground and on the football pitch. The younger lads and the ones who were single latched on to him quickly and they all used to hang out together after the football. I thought he was a great lad and you could tell that he wanted to work hard and do well. His attitude was always right which went a long way with the lads as they realised that a really good player had come in.

About a month or two after Jamie had arrived, I had been in and out of the team. I got back in and remember us having a huddle just before one kick - off. I remember saying to Vards, “Do us a favour, Jamie, keep me in the team. ” By that I meant, ‘go and score a few goals’ and he did of course. He hit the ground running and he didn’t stop. In fact he could have caught a pile of leaves in a hurricane because he would chase everything down. You could always tell, though, that Jamie was going to move on.

His pace and power stand out

for me but I think his ability to finish is why he is where he is now. I marked him in training and it was always difficult because of his movement.

You had to be on the ball with Vards because if you took your eye off him he’d be gone and he would make you look a fool. He was always a difficult opponent; he did the business and he trained as he played. Jamie’s worth ethic is second to none. Since leaving Fleetwood his hold up play has come on and other aspects of his game have improved too.

I think his coaches now want him to do more than just play on the shoulder of the last man. I think they want him to drop off and swap roles with someone else and give his legs a rest sometimes. When he first came to Fleetwood he was only a skinny little striker but he wasn’t scared of getting stuck in and was like an oldfashioned centre forward in that respect. Vards just got his head down and got a shift in.

No matter what centre halves said to him or if they tried to bully him, they knew Jamie wouldn’t take any messing.

Apart from us winning the Conference when Jamie was here we had a good FA Cup run that season. I recall the First Round game against Wycombe Wanderers which we won 2 – 0.

I remember I crossed the ball for Mangy (Andy Mangan) to volley home the first goal and Vards got the second one. We played Yeovil away in the next round and I recall it went to an away replay which we won 2 – 0 with Jamie again scoring the second goal. The big Third Round tie everyone remembers was against Blackpool but it wasn’t a happy day for the team or for me personally. I was devastated because I wasn’t selected for that match and had to watch it from the stands. It was disappointing because it was a big derby match and we lost 5 – 1 with Vards scoring our goal.

When the season ended Jamie departed and he was missed all round, both on the pitch and off. He

did the business with Fleetwood by scoring 31 league goals and then he moved on. I think it was the right thing for the club and for Jamie to go when he did. There were some big boots to fill when you have had a player like him. Meantime, I think he struggled a bit in his first season at Leicester. I remember our then manager, Micky Mellon, saying that Jamie looked a little lost during his first year in the Championship and he struggled a bit. In fairness, though, it was a big jump for Jamie from the Conference to the Championship.

It was always going to take a little bit of time for the player to get to grips with that type of football and that kind of atmosphere. Once he did, his confidence came out again.

He found his feet and he was away. Jamie has done brilliantly since and I am really delighted for him. I haven’t been in the least bit surprised that he has won England caps.

Since retiring from the game at the end of last season, I can honestly say that I have not missed the football one bit. I do though miss the dressing room banter but life goes on and I am now working for a company called Indigo Art. It has all kinds of pictures and canvases for which frames are made and then we go out and fit them in restaurants, hotels and pub franchises. We are down in London a lot with the work. Whilst I enjoyed my time at Rochdale I must confess that I love Fleetwood Town and it is my favourite club which I have been at. I was gutted when I left and theirs remains the first result which I look for. I had a great time there, I had two promotions and played at Wembley. We had some great characters in the team and it was nice to be a part of it. You always get one player who stands out from the rest and ours was Jamie. He was magnificent in our promotion season from the Conference.

DM: Jamie, my mind goes back six years to interviews on touchlines at the likes of Alfreton and Southport. Does it seem a long time ago now?

JV: It certainly does away from the pitch but not on the pitch. I can still remember the games like they were yesterday!

DM: After arriving in late August, you made your mark at Kettering with two goals in a game which Fleetwood almost gave away!

JV: That’s right. I got a couple of goals which started me off but the main highlight that I remember from that game is giving a lad ten yards, knocking the ball past him and getting to it ten yards in front of him. I still talk to Mangs (Andy Mangan) regularly and he brings it up every time!

DM: Your two goals against Gateshead were overshadowed by a Mangan special. I spoke to him recently and the shot seems to keep getting longer! I think it’s a 40 yard strike now!

he? Nearly 500 games. He’s unbelievable and been there since it all started. He’s still going strong now.

DM: Are there any of your thirty-one goals that stand out in your mind as being either spectacular or important in the context of the game?

DM: In the FA Cup run you scored in the first three rounds.

What do you remember about the games?

JV: Yes, Grimsby Town at home near the end of the season. It was a late goal and we won 2-1. My celebrations went a bit mad in front of their manager who had previously said when I was at Stocksbridge that I would never make it as a footballer.

That was definitely a good one to put in the back of the net!

DM: And you were off-balance when you scored?

JV: That’s right! I cut in from the side but at the end of the day it went in. That’s all that matters and it was against a side on form.

DM: You joined a very talented Fleetwood team with four other strikers in the squad who were to score fifty goals between them!

JV: The squad we had was unbelievable. You could see what Andy Pilley wanted. Football League. Everything was set up for it but results hadn’t gone too well before I arrived. Obviously, Wrexham were giving us a tough time but we never looked back.

DM: You will no doubt remember losing to bottom side Newport County at home. It was an unexpected blip but it led to the 29 match unbeaten run which took you to the title.

JV: I definitely remembered that one! I was injured but still had to play in the game. All looked good when Sedds (Gareth Seddon) scored in the first minute. Then it went to pot. We showed our quality and ability with the big unbeaten run and got what we fully deserved at the end of the season, promotion to the Football League.

JV: Wycombe had Jordan Ibe on the left wing. He’s had a great career himself, to be fair. I remember big Steve McNulty getting sent off in the Second Round replay at Yeovil and Brodie getting booked after mouthing off while warming up! That was a brilliant night and it was a result we really deserved. Playing your neighbours in the next round was an extra incentive. We had pulled it back in the first leg to get the replay and it was amazing in the hotel after we got through!

DM: You scored a goal and gave some quality defenders, Evatt and Baptiste, a lot of trouble against Blackpool in the Third Round. Their manager, Ian Holloway, was full of praise for you after the game.

JV: He was but it’s the way I played back then and it still is today. It’s me playing my natural game. The result wasn’t what we wanted but the match certainly put Fleetwood and myself in the spotlight.

DM: Fleetwood has taken you from part-time at FC Halifax to Premier League football with Leicester. Fair to say that Highbury has been a big part of your career so far?

JV: Absolutely. I will always be grateful to Fleetwood for giving me my first full-time football. To be training every

day and working on my strengths and weaknesses could only benefit my game and I hope for the fans that I showed it on the pitch. I have really fond memories of my time at Highbury.

DM: Your hairstyle has become more modest!

JV: Yeah, I’ve had to cut back on that a bit! I remember sending out for some red hair spray once when the lads were wearing red hair. Danny Moore sprayed my Mohican just before the game!

DM: Obviously, what you have gone on to achieve has exceeded your wildest dreams?

JV: Definitely. Lots has happened but there is still a lot of hard work to be done in the future. I’ve plenty more I want to achieve.

DM: Through your academy you are committed to helping non-league talent come through, like yourself. In Harrison Biggins, we have another former Stocksbridge player at Highbury.

JV: I’ve heard a lot about Harrison through the Stocksbridge chairman so hopefully he will go on to do well. I want to see as many non-league players as possible coming through.

DM: Well, Jamie, it’s been a change from a wet night at Alfreton and a pleasure to catch up with you.

JV: Thanks. No problem.

DM: The squad was full of characters and leaders. The likes of Peter Cavanagh and Steve McNulty. (Vardy smiles...!)

JV: We had a Liverpool group, a Manchester group and I was the only Yorkshire lad on his own! It was a brilliant dressing room to be in. There was loads of banter and pranks. You just never knew what was going to happen next!

DM: And it allowed a character such as yourself to settle in quickly and comfortably?

JV: It definitely did. I lived in a house with four of the lads and we had some brilliant times. Fleetwood needed characters in the dressing room, having a laugh and a joke virtually whenever we wanted to. We also knew that when we got on to the pitch there was a job to do and we did it week in, week out. It was the type of dressing room we had that made the club successful.

DM: Pondy has mentioned some of the dressing room antics, including the private boxing matches! He kept it brief!

JV: Yeah, that’s probably just as well! The guys a legend, isn’t

Having been appointed to the Academy set up in July, I am thoroughly enjoying my role here at the football club. Having overseen the signing of over fifteen players to the Academy - which is a credit to the recruitment team who brave the ailments to search the local and surrounding areas to search for the best talent.

Working at such a forward thinking club certainly lends itself to a motivational mindset where you feel and develop a desire to succeed on a personal and professional level. Recently, I attended the Victory Shield held in Northern Ireland, which is an Under-16 International tournament for Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland and the hosts Northern Ireland. It is worth noting following the trip we currently have four international players on trial at the Academy with a view to earning scholarships.

We currently operate at Category 3 level but are beginning in no small part to the fantastic training facilities the club have invested in to be able attract players to train with the Academy again with a view to earning scholarships from Category 1 Academies such as

Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland and Middlesborough which speaks volumes for the Academy vision and its intentions for the future.

Although I am Head of Academy Recruitment, the Technical Director Gretar Steinsson has been influential in developing my knowledge and skill set by encouraging my presence alongside him and Steve Davis (Chief Scout). Recently, we visited a conference at Stamford Bridge which was attended by most English and European clubs to share information and build relationships with clubs around recruitment.

There is a huge opportunity for the Academy to support the future of this football club and there are some very positive improvements at the Academy which are testament to the staff here at Poolfoot Farm.

YOUR GUIDE TO FORTHCOMING HOME AND AWAY FIXTURES After the Emirates FA Cup match against Leicester City, the next visitors to Highbury are Blackburn Rovers (pictured right) in Sky Bet League One on 20th January. The match at Ewood Park finished 2-2, with Aiden O’Neill and Wes Burns scoring second half goals to seal a huge point away for Uwe Rosler’s men. It won’t be until Saturday 3rd February until the next ball will be kicked on the Fylde Coast, as Scunthorpe United (pictured right) will make the journey across The Pennines. Town picked up a point at their place with a late Jordy Hiwula goal making sure the points were shared. Shrewsbury Town scored a late goal at The New Meadow in October secured all three points, and Paul Hurst’s side will be wanting another result on Tuesday 13th February when they travel to Fleetwood to keep their promotion hopes alive.

Town have a busy away schedule in January 2018 with two long trips down South in two weeks. Rosler’s side have another trip to Greater Manchester on the 9th January as they face Bury again, this time in the Checkatrade Trophy. After they put on a strong performance against Chris Lucketti’s Bury in the league a few weeks ago to make it back to back away wins over the Christmas break, the Cod Army will be looking for a similar result in the cup. Southend United (pictured left) will be Town’s next away trip on the 13th February, and after a 4-2 loss to Phil Brown’s side back in August, there will be revenge on the cards a day before Valentines Day. The second long journey is a trip to Gillingham (pictured left), and this fixture last year saw Fleetwood won 3-2 in the last minute of the game thanks to a Kyle Dempsey strike. There are always goals when these two sides meet.
