GAFFER’SNOTES Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s game.

Today we face Northampton Town, the side we came up against in my first game as Fleetwood Town’s Head Coach.

Back then I’d been at the club just under a week and the progress everyone has made, on and off the pitch, since then has been very pleasing.

The results we are achieving at the moment are the product of lots of hard work and sacrifices from everyone at the club, particularly from the players.

The players understand that we have have to maintain our high levels of professionalism, day-in-day-out to give ourselves the best chance to continue our journey.

Midfielder Cameron Brannagan has joined the Cod Army on loan from Premier League side Liverpool.

Despite being associated with Liverpool since the age of five, twenty-year old Cameron Brannagan was born in Salford, into a family of United supporters.

“I was a big Paul Scholes fan growing up but also enjoyed watching Ronaldo, Rooney and Gerrard. There are still bits of banter at Liverpool about me being from Manchester but you get used to them. Everyone has been very friendly and helpful along the way.

“I was a striker when I was five, until about 12 when I dropped back into midfield. Through all the age groups, I’ve actually played in every position, including goalkeeper from time to time! Mum used to take me up and down the motorway after school and I can’t thank her enough.

I’m determined to repay my family for all they have done for me.

“People see footballers and think it’s a straight line all the way up throughout their careers. It’s never like that. There are plenty of tears along the way and I never take anything for granted. I’ve had so many ups and downs with coaches telling me what I can’t do. I’ve always tried to block that out and prove them wrong. It spurs me on. There is always a pathway to success if you keep working hard. I honestly believe that.”

Cameron gives credit to a number of coaches at Liverpool who have given particular encouragement.

“We drew 0-0 but we had a young team and played well. We deserved to win.

I had a good game and could have scored but their keeper made a great save. I wouldn’t say first team was a massive stepup because I felt I had prepared myself hard for the situation, since the age of five in fact!”

“Michael Beale and Alex Inglethorpe did a lot for me through the Liverpool ranks and Brendan Rodgers has been a big help. We spoke regularly and I was on the bench a few times for him. He gave me my first taste of proper football at Bordeaux in the Europa League, in September

Soon there were appearances at Anfield, against Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup, Exeter and West Ham in the FA Cup and Watford in the Premier League.

“You go to all the first team games at Anfield and think, ‘One day, I want to be here.’ West Ham was my first test against quality opposition, the likes of Payet and Song.

The day after Cameron signed a contract taking him to 2018, Jurgen Klopp

described him as ‘a real talent who has everything you need from a midfield player.’

“It was a big boost for the young midifelder but one that he tried to keep in perspective.

“It’s the way I’ve been brought up. I’m very down to earth and humble. It’s the best way to be.”

Currently, he has shirt number 25 at Liverpool but that hasn’t always been the case.

“Originally, I had number 50.

Laz (Markovic) came and wanted 50, so I swapped to 32.

“Then Joel Matip signed and wanted 32, so I went down to 25!

A number’s a number to me.’

Cameron’s first taste of life at Fleetwood Town was in the preseason friendly, where he came on for Liverpool in the second half. His loan period at Highbury started in January 2016.

“It was hard to change after fifteen years at Liverpool and I knew no one apart from Joe McGuire.

“You have to get used to the dressing room and new rules but everyone’s been so helpful.

“I want to keep impressing and help Fleetwood as much as I can to win games.

“I always set myself little targets which take me forward a step at a time. It might be a certain number of assists or goals.”

Cameron Brannagan is balanced in every way, as a player and in his approach to life.

Who is your best mate in the footballing world?

“There are a few but I’ve been with Joe McGuire since the age of six. We are close on and off the pitch. It even extends to when we are driving in to training. We are on the phone to each other all the time.”

Who is the best player you have ever played against?

“West Ham’s Dimitri Payet .

Unbelievable talent so I had to get into his face every time he got the ball” What is the best stadium that you have ever played in?

“Anfield. You can’t explain the feeling when you run out. It makes you want to do so well. If you don’t get that feeling you’re not ready for the moment.”

Have you got a favourite goal you have scored in your career so far?

“There have been a couple for the Liverpool 23s & 21s when it has been 1-1 and we’ve won 2-1.”

The match with The U’s was originally scheduled for 28th February (7:45pm) will be moved to a later date due to the U’s progressing to the latter stages of the Emirates FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy competitions. Once a date has been agreed with the EFL and both clubs, all ticketing details will be released on both club websites.

Entry to the Football League in 2012 resulted in a much more significant review of matchday safety for Fleetwood Town as clubs with bigger fan bases made plans to visit Highbury. Paul is normally at Highbury by half past eleven on Saturdays but much will already have been addressed by then.

“Each game is taken on its own merits. When the fixtures come out, I sit down with the police and identify the high-profile matches.

“We establish the policing and stewarding presence required for each. Bradford City, for instance, brought over one thousand fans on a Tuesday night which was quite a challenge for a small ground.

“There will have been communication with the opposition club in the days leading up to the game. I will receive information on potential risks and threats and likely numbers to expect.

“Details will be passed on to the police. What is the latest intelligence telling us? We may need to highlight issues such as alcohol, drugs and the use of pyrotechnics which is a growing problem in the game. I will liaise with Steve Beane on operational day to day matters around the ground and Steve Metcalf in the ticket office will give me an idea of sales and number of coaches expected. During the game there is little opportunity to watch the football because most of my time is focused on the dynamics of the crowd and the CCTV, operated by my deputy, Jim Barnes. There is plenty of communication and eyes all over.

“I am in radio contact with stewards in each of the four stands. There is someone responsible for each stand. There are also emergency phones which come directly to the control room and external stewards with radios.

“Post-match there will be a stadium check, a debrief with the referee and stewards and a match log to complete. An hour to an hour and half after the game ends, I will head home.”

COMMUNITYTRUST Fleetwood Town FC Community Trust half term soccer camps were a success at Poolfoot Farm.

This February half term, The Community Trust delivered five different Sports Camps across the Wyre Borough.

They were held at Carleton Green Primary & Flakefleet Primary School (Sports Camps), Soccer Schools at Poolfoot Farm & Wyre Villa FC and an Inclusion Camp at Sacred Heart Primary for ages five years up to 19 years.

Over the course of the week there was over 200 children who attended the camps.

The Soccer School at Poolfoot was a great success, with over 120 children attending throughout the week.

The week consisted of different themes in the morning session, ranging from shooting and passing to defending and possession. In the afternoon we took over the red pitches and had numerous teams who battled it out to be crowned the champions.

Over the week there was chances to win different prizes, for example football manager and medals, in the form of penalty competitions and MOM awards. Overall the week was a great success and all that came had a great time and learnt a number of new skills which they can now put into practise at their grassroots teams! We hope to see many more at the next Soccer School.

Our fantastic relation with Flakefleet Primary School continues which saw us host our ever increasing Sports Camp at the state of the art Flakefleet Studio.

Consistent numbers throughout, we played a variety of sports with each individual taking part to ensure enjoyable and competitive activities.

On top of this, we enjoyed a trip to the ever successful Carleton Green camp which gave the children the opportunity to play as part of larger teams.

Towards the end of the week, we gave out prizes to those who had shown terrific spirit and behaviour.

The prizes included Fleetwood Town Community Trust medals and also match tickets for the game today.

AN UPDATE FROM THE ACADEMY

As we come to the end of February and enter the last two months of the season, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaches for their hard work and commitment, in what has been a very hectic first Academy season. Since opening on 1st August 2016, we have made great strides both on and off the pitch. Our facilities are second to none, but without players and coaches dedication we would not make progress. The work that goes into planning and delivering coaching sessions, the evaluation and record keeping afterwards, the time organising and travelling to and from matches, is often all taken for granted and unseen by those watching a game on a Sunday morning. The EFL have very strict guidelines for Academies and we are constantly under assessment. To date we are not only ticking all the assessment boxes, but showing great improvement, so thank you to everybody.

Since our last programme, we’ve had two games with mixed results. We had a good win at Bolton last week where we played well, never felt in danger and were quite comfortable, with Alex Reid and Dan Mooney scoring. In contrast, we played Wigan on Tuesday who had a strong side out.

We had the best chances of the first half but conceeded two before half-time. We were not up to their standards in possession, and they were sharper. We will learn from this in the future, starting against Sheffield United on Tuesday in the Development Squad Cup semi-final at Poolfoot Farm.

Last Saturday saw the Youth Team travel to Wigan and come away with a well-earned draw. Having gone behind 2-0 in the first half a spirited fightback began with a well worked team goal, finished off by Gerrard Garner. Good individual work by Dan Mooney resulted in a shot coming back off the keeper and being deflected in by a defender. Dan is trying to claim the goal but after close scrutiny of the video has deemed it an o.g! That means Garner is now on 13 goals for the season and Mooney on 12.

This week has been an exciting one for the under 13’s after I sent out the information that they would be participating in this year’s Rey Cup in Iceland. It’s the 15th anniversary of the tournament that myself and staff are thoroughly looking forward to, being able to compete against many clubs including the likes of Brondby, Hansa Rostock, IFK Gotenburg and Liverpool. We will be away for five days and it’s going to be a great experience for all players and club.

It was an exciting week for the Foundation Phase, especially the Under 11 team who played two games in the five days. The side played against Pro Football Academy of Manchester then, River Juniors of Liverpool. The football really showcased the improvement and development of the Under 11’s so far this season securing two convincing wins. The Under 11’s played River Juniors earlier in the season, in a tight game and to see how much they have improved this season is excellent.
