GAFFER’SNOTES Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury Stadium as we take on Rochdale. Today is the first of two home games in four days, both against sides around us in the Sky Bet League One table. In recent weeks we’ve faced some very strong teams and today will be no different against a side who have already proven their quality this season.

“In recent weeks we’ve faced some very strong teams and today will be no different” This afternoon we play against the team who probably gave us our most painful defeat of the season. That game back in September is one I remember very well, and if there is one performance I really regret this season it is the 2-1 defeat against Rochdale. Today is a chance for us to put that right. Both teams have been big surprises this season and will be looking to keep their positive runs going, for that reason I’m looking forward to a very exciting match today, with hopefully a positive outcome for our side.

“Both teams have been big surprises this season and will be looking to keep their positive runs going” Finally, I’d like to welcome Keith Hill and all the players, staff and directors of Rochdale to Highbury this afternoon. Enjoy the game,

WES IS BURNING BRIGHT AT TOWN WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL PICS: STEFAN WILLOUGHBY

Attacker Wes Burns is back at Town after signing on a full contract from Bristol City early on in January. As with so many footballers, Wes Burns acknowledges the support of his family, even though his father wouldn’t let him start football until he was six! “I would nag Dad all the time! Finally, I went to my first training session at Barry Athletic. Dad’s friend ran the under 12s so I went straight in with older kids. I was way smaller than the rest but it toughened me up quickly. “Dad worked away so Mum did the travelling around to training. Grandad helped with lifts and also took me to matches at Ninian Park. Robert Earnshaw was playing for Cardiff. As a striker, he was the type of player I looked up to.” Wes was picked up by Cardiff City aged eight. “It was a twenty-minute drive from home. Mum took me twice a week. I would get in from school, 4 |

have a quick bite to eat, then go straight back out. I kept it going for about three years but lost interest and just wanted to play with my mates. I played with Llantwit Major. We had a lot of success. I scored goals and really enjoyed myself.” Re-energised, Wes was offered a six-week trial by Cardiff at the age of fourteen and a two-year contract followed, before he was released. “Dad was straight on the phone to the south-western clubs and Bristol City came back first. I had a trial in 2009 and was successful. Miles John was there, a familiar face from Cardiff. This helped as it was my first time away from home.” Progress was rapid. “My first game was as a fifteen year-old for the under 18s! Very soon I was playing for the under

sixteens in the first half then going straight to the second half for the under 18s. Then it was under 18s on Saturdays, under 21s on Mondays.” A first pro-contract followed in 2012. “Dad sorted it out for me as I didn’t have an agent! I had trained with a few of the first team as they came back from injuries so I knew their level. I played loads of reserve team games and particularly enjoyed playing alongside Nicky Hunt who used to give me the ball and told me to get at people.” A few first-team appearances followed before a loan period at Forest Green in 2013. “My debut was at Southport. I went into training on the Monday and we were travelling up on Tuesday, the day of the game. I didn’t know anyone but came on in

the second half and scored the winner in the 93rd minute in front of about eight of our fans!” Back at Bristol, Steve Cotterill was to prove a supportive manager who gave Wes belief that he could secure a first team place again. It happened and a first goal was scored in February 2014. “I was surprised that I got credit for that one! A cross came in and I headed it through a group of players. It probably took about three or four ricochets before going in. “We were two-nil down to Coventry City. I peeled off with the old Alan Shearer finger to the sky salute but then remembered we were still losing so calmed down!” Wes was to describe a goal against Chesterfield in October 2014 as the ‘best moment of my career’. “Wade Elliott crossed the ball. I swivelled on the half volley and lashed it in to the far corner.” Productive loan experience followed, including Cheltenham and Fleetwood. “Cheltenham went down and that experience helped me when I came to Fleetwood last season. I knew what was needed to stay up. Fleetwood was one of my best periods on loan and it was good to see them doing well this season. I kept in touch and now have a new deal which gives me confidence and stability. It’s a huge thing to get the number nine shirt.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM WWW.FLEETWOODTOWN.CO.UK | 5

In this issue of Cod Army, we asked our consistant defender some questions regarding how he became the player he is today. Who is your best mate in the footballing world? “Joe Bryan, left back at Bristol City. Joe is a year older than me but we came up through the ranks together.” Who is the best player you have ever played against? “Scott Brown of Celtic is a perfect example to all young players of how to control centre midfield.” What is the best stadium that you have ever played in? “Celtic Park, when I was on loan at Aberdeen. A crowd of 65000. An unbelievable atmosphere.” Have you got a favourite goal you have scored in your career so far? “The one against Chesterfield. A massive three points to keep our League One hopes alive. We pushed on to become Champions.”

GREAT JUST GOT GREATER

INTRODUCING

ROCHDALE Jake Parker takes a look at today’s opponents, Rochdale...

Keith Hill brings his Rochdale side to the Fylde coast today for a Sky Bet League One fixture against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. Today’s opponents are currently sitting just three place below the Cod Army as they have enjoyed a decent run of form throughout the season so far. They are just outside the play-off places and looks like it might stay that way

Today’s man to watch would have to be the Rochdale’s leading performer, both goals and assists wise, Ian Henderson.

Rochdale have had great form so far but in recent weeks, they have only lost three of their last four games. In the last three matches, they have conceded eight goals, with four of them coming from each team, Oxford United and Huddersfield and their last win came against Barrow in FA Cup Third Round.

Dale Dixon is in that minority of people around Highbury who never see a ball kicked live. Instead, he faces away from the pitch overlooking a bank of monitors and controlling the giant screen which has become an essential feature of matchday. Before heading to the Control Room in the Parkside Stand, Dale must ensure that all the television monitors in the ground are set up for the early Premier League kick off. “I will have arrived at Highbury between eleven and half past. My first job at the Control Room will be to turn the stadium screen on and set the music up. I work on the presentation which everyone around the ground will see through the afternoon. Head of Commercial, Martin Booker, has a schedule on which various companies will be entitled to a certain amount of time on the screen. They will be joined by that day’s sponsors, seasonal adverts and club promotions.” Every detail matters and Dale constantly has to think on his feet. “Although I have my own dedicated email address for announcements such as birthdays, so that they can be sent before the day, I still get requests on the Saturday morning and have to edit them in as and when. Team sheets can be interesting with some of the names that appear! In matters such as this I liaise with Rod Allsworth, the Stadium Announcer. I am responsible for Rod’s script and ensuring that his microphone is

turned on! “Just before three ‘o’ clock, I watch the referee put the whistle to his mouth and hit the screen clock as soon as I hear the shrill tone. Despite the advances we have made in systems, it is still something that has to be done manually. “One of the most hectic times is when a goal is scored. The supporter sees the goal action on the screen soon after but there is a lot of work that goes into enabling that. Strict rules govern what we can and cannot show. “As the game finishes, we play Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’. Important announcements will be displayed such as ticket details for the next game or safety messages for away fans. “The music fades out, the screen fades to black and I switch off. All that remains is for me to make sure that all is set up for the late kick-off being shown in Jim’s Bar and the Parkside. Then I can leave the ground around five thirty.” Dale has been connected with BES and Fleetwood Town for nearly six years. “I enjoy what I do and I love football. The only down side is that I cannot savour the atmosphere outside the Control Room. It’s like watching the match at home!” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 11

COMMUNITYTRUST Young people thrive through NCS with Fleetwood Town FC Community Trust National Citizen Service (NCS) is the fastest growing youth movement since the Scouts began. Over 300,000 young people have now graduated from the programme.

GRASS

Fleetwood Town FC Community Trust are part of the national movement of NCS which has huge impact on young people and communities with over 1.9 million hours of social action has taking place across the country, the equivalent to building 74 Olympic Stadiums and The Great Wall of China.

Since 2000, the Football Foundation has invested in £1.3 billion of grassroots sports projects and has developed more than 600 artificial grass pitches, 1,000 changing pavilions and 3,000 natural grass pitches.

NCS is a once-in- a-lifetime experience for all 15-17 Year olds that can help fast track Young People’s future by learning new skills for work and enhancing CVs by demonstrating to employers the skills that they have learnt whilst on NCS, confidence, teamwork and leadership skills.

PITCHES Find out more at: footballfoundation.org.uk

At today’s game Fleetwood Town FC will be supporting NCS and highlighting the positive work that young people from Fleetwood have done in the local community.

NCS is delivered by Fleetwood Town FC Community Trust and with the support of young people who have already graduated from NCS, the programme has made its mark on people’s lives and the local community. Last summer the NCS group raised over £750 for the Fleetwood RNLI. Michael Wilkinson NCS Co-ordinator believes that more young people in Fleetwood can benefit from NCS. NCS Ambassador, David Ball said: “NCS is an amazing opportunity for young people to really challenge themselves and give something back to their local community. If I was 16 again I would have said Yes to NCS.” If you’re 15 to 17 years old, this is your chance to make lasting friendships,  embrace the outdoors and learn the  skills they don’t teach in school sign up to NCS this Summer with Fleetwood Town Community Trust. ACADEMY&DEVELOPMENTSQUAD STUARTMURDOCH

Full Time

AN UPDATE FROM THE ACADEMY

Since our last programme notes there has been sadness and delight in the Academy ranks. Some decisions have been made regarding scholarships for next season and the hardest job in football is to tell a 15 year-old boy he is not being offered a scholarship. We have lost a number of boys who have been with the club some time, who have worked very hard, but have not quite reached the standard required. I always stress to the boys, and their parents, that this is only our decision and they should try other clubs and other avenues to get into professional football if they feel they have the talent. We wish them every success going forward. Four scholarships have been awarded so far, and we will give you more information regarding this in our next programme.

UNDER21S

PAUL MURRAY

Since our last update we have played five matches and have recorded three wins, a draw and a loss. Our run started with an excellent display against Morecambe’s first team. We won 3-1 and what impressed me most was how solid we were defensively. Alex Reid, Ashley Nadesan and a trialist got the goals for us. We then played a strong Chorley first team which provided us with a good physical test – we played well and coped with their aerial treat with Reid getting another good goal. We’ll continue our round-up in Tuesday night’s programme against Bradford.

UNDER18S

NATHAN ROONEY

The Youth team had their game against Accrington postponed, with it now likely to be played on February 14th. The game against Wrexham was in doubt last Saturday, until it was changed to be played at Airbus UK on their AstroTurf pitch. Our boys started really well with goals from Mooney, Garner and Collings putting them in a very strong position within the first 10 minutes. Wrexham pulled two back from set pieces just before half time and then drew level in the second half from another set play. A deserved win was sealed with another Garner goal. Needless to say defending set plays will be on this week’s coaching agenda!

SIMON WILES

It’s been a big learning experience for myself over the last week starting with a tough fixture against Wigan followed by meetings regarding scholarships. I wish all the lads who have unfortualty just missed out all the best for the future and I hope they prove us wrong. Looking ahead I’m delighted to have signed two players in the under 12’s, both I think will improve the group we have and I’m excited about their progression.

FOUNDATIONPHASE

JOEY NEWSON

It has been another good week in the Foundation Phase with games for our under 8’s against Wrexham and Pro Football Academy. It’s been a great opportunity for the 20 players that we currently have in our group, to transfer the knowledge and skills that they have developed in training since the start of the season and put these into practise during a game. Both games were very competitive against a Wrexham team that were the year older. WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 21
