GAFFERSNOTES Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for our first home game of 2017. Firstly I’d like to thank the supporters for their fantastic backing in recent weeks, particualrly at Bristol City last weekend. To take so many supporters such a long way was a real credit to you all, your voices was all I could hear for the whole of the first half. I believe many of you took advantage of a fantastic offer from the Chairman who subsidised your travel for the game, and it’s great to hear he will be doing that between now and the end of the season. I’m delighted to see people respond to Andy’s offer, his support of the club, and the town as a whole, really deserves to be rewarded with the support of the people. The levels of backing you have all been giving us in recent weeks really does make a difference. On the pitch we are delighted with how things are going at the moment, my players and staff are being

“The level of backing you have all been giving us in recent weeks really does make a difference” rewarded for the amount of hard work they are putting in on the training ground.

0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm

This afternoon we face a tough game against a side who arrive on the back of an excellent win against Northampton last weekend, we are more than aware of the qualities they posses. That said, we are in good form ourselves, and we are hoping to continue our excellent run of results in the last twelve games. Finally I’d like to welcome the players, staff and all the directors of Bristol Rovers to Highbury today, and wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the game,

NO CAIRNS IN THE WORLD WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL PICS: STEFAN WILLOUGHBY

Goalkeeper Alex Cairns signed for Fleetwood Town last summer and has since become Town’s number one When Alex Cairns offered to go in goal for his Sunday League side, it was to prove a wise choice. “Ever since I can remember I wanted to kick a ball. I was a lot bigger than most of the other kids and had the power to shoot from almost anywhere. I was a big England fan, particularly of David Beckham. I used to try and copy his hairstyles!” Cairns enjoyed school and for him it had strong similarities to playing football. “You have your mates around you but when you need to work hard you make sure you do. I know I can concentrate when I have to and that was the same at school.” He will always be indebted to a reluctant keeper at Hyde Park Knights Sunday League club in Doncaster. “We were on the training 4 |

ground when the keeper said he didn’t want to be in goal any more. I volunteered myself for the game the next day, we won and I played well. I stayed in for a few games. Being a pro was more a dream than a reality at that point but the coach was also a scout for Leeds United and he suggested I went along. “It was my first real test as a goalkeeper. Academy coach Chris Miller told me after just three weeks he had never known a player who could change as much in such a short time. I will always be grateful to Chris. I wouldn’t be here without him.” Another major influence on Alex’s career came from Neil Redfearn. “In the youth team Neil taught me a lot about the brutal realism in football, the importance of fighting for three points, of keeping clean sheets.”

Cairns eventually joined the senior squad and made his Championship debut at home to Blackpool in 2011. “The coach told me I was coming on at half time. When he heard, Dad tripped in his haste to get back up the stairs to see me! We were losing 3-0 and were a man down against a decent side when I came on so it was damage limitation.” Cairns signed a twoyear deal with Leeds but furthered his experience out on loan, starting at Barrow. “Training was badly affected by the weather so I tended to continue working with Leeds. I was on the bench for Barrow in several games and travelled three hours with Dad for one home game to be told by the manager that I wasn’t playing. I hadn’t trained enough with

the squad. I was gutted as I was there to play games. “Although the manager understood my frustration, I left soon after. Neil Warnock took over from Simon Grayson at Leeds and made it clear that Andy Lonergan was number one but wanted me to be ready if needed.” Cairns spent the 2012-13 season in non-league football with Stalybridge Celtic. “Jim Harvey and Tim Ryan were really supportive and I loved every minute. Getting three awards meant a lot, particularly the one chosen by the players. That loan period made me feel that I could be a footballer and I wanted to push on from there.” Limited opportunities back at Leeds continued to frustrate but there was a chance to move forward in July 2015 with a sixmonth contract at Chesterfield. It was a short but enjoyable time but Neil Redfearn came calling when he moved to Rotherham United. That was twelve months ago but, once again, Cairns had to play a waiting game. Nevertheless, it led the 24 year-old to Fleetwood Town. Goalkeeping coach, Dave Lucas, had watched a few games and liked what he saw. “It was made clear that I would have to fight for my place but I have always been ready to do that. Then I got a chance that I’ve perhaps not had at other clubs and I’m grateful for the opportunity. I have really starting to enjoy football again.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM WWW.FLEETWOODTOWN.CO.UK | 5

In this issue of Cod Army, we asked our in form ‘keeper some questions regarding how he became the player he is today. Who is your best mate in the footballing world? “I have grown up with Mansfield’s Jamie Baxendale. There’s Alex Mowatt of Leeds and Paddy Kenny. I could really name ten!” Who is the best player you have ever played against? “Patrick Bamford, a striker in Forest’s youth team. He hit the top corner from between half way and our penalty area. I don’t know who I was waving at when it passed me!” What is the best stadium that you have ever played in? “Leeds United’s ground, Elland Road. It was such a great stadium to play in.”

FLEETWOODTOWN WILLREMEMBER Today’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Bristol Rovers will be our Fans’ Remembrance match, where we will pay respects to members of the Fleetwood Town family who passed away in 2016. Please see below a list of names who sadly passed away in the last year.

EDWIN (EDDIE) HOLT

We were deeply saddened to learn that Fleetwood Town’s oldest and longest standing supporter Edwin (Eddie) Holt passed away peacefully earlier this week. He was 93 and had supported the club for over 70 years. He was a devout Methodist and along with his long-time friend and Fleetwood Town club Chaplain Len Preston, who passed away a few years ago, was a familiar figure at Highbury to generations of supporters. His proudest day in all his many years supporting his home town club was visiting Wembley in May 2014 for the League 2 play-off final. Resplendent in his club tie and a Lancashire red rose, he proudly watched Fleetwood’s victory over Burton Albion from the Royal Box as a guest of the club.

INTRODUCING

BRISTOL ROVERS Jake Parker takes a look at today’s opponents, Bristol Rovers... Darrell Clarke brings his Bristol Rovers side to the Fylde coast this afternoon for a Sky Bet League One fixture against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. Today’s opponents Bristol Rovers sit in 8th position in the Sky Bet League One table with 39 points, one point behind Town who are currently in sixth place. Rovers make the trip to Fleetwood on the back of a 5-0 victory against Northampton Town on Saturday.

IT’S EASIER WITH MY BETS

Rovers have had a decent half to the season and by the end of December, they had won ten games, drawn 6 and lost eight games.

Since then, Clarke’s side have played two games. On January 2, Rovers started off the year in a bad way as they lost 4-1 to Charlton Athletic but fought their way back the week after with their win against Northampton. Last time these two sides met, Town lost 2-1 to Bristol at the Memorial Stadium. Ashley Hunter put the Cod’s in the lead early on but goals from Matty Taylor and Cristian Montano gave Clarke’s side all three points. The Pirates will make this weekends game a tough one but hopefully Town can come out on top.

Today’s man to watch would have to be the Sky Bet League One top goal scorer, Matty Taylor.

he scored on his League One debut and has since scored fourteen more just in the league.

Bristol Rovers acquired his services back in 2014 and has, up to this point, racked up over 100 appearances for the club and over 50 goals.

Taylor causes so much trouble for defences due to his clinical dribbling and his pace, which makes the opposing players think twice about jumping in.

THE UK’S TOP RATED SPORTS BETTING APP

Last season, Taylor finished as the Football League’s top goal scorer, finishing the campaign with 27 goals, and five assists to go with them and his form seems to have carried on as

Town’s defence will have to stay stern and be quick on their feet against this opponent. If they do that, they could shut out the lethal striker and also my man to watch.

NAME: Natalie Gradwell JOB: Data Analyst Words by David Mitchell Natalie Gradwell is perfectly qualified to helping maximise the business potential of Fleetwood Town, having gained a first-class honours degree in football business and finance. “In my final year I approached my local club for voluntary experience. I’ve now been working fulltime for two years.” The analytical side of Natalie’s work takes up much of her time between matchdays. She will prepare attendance and revenue reports for senior management based on data gathered from the previous home game and also carry out system checks ahead of the next. Her matchday begins around nine o’clock with the opening of the ticket office and club shop, followed soon after by the first telephone call of the day.

“Unless we have already sold out, match day is our busiest for sales. It can be fans tipping up on the day but with online transactions we can do business over the phone as well. There might also be overnight emails to process. Our ticket sales assistants are on duty from midday. There is a constant stream of visitors from around twelve. A lot of away fans come in for club memorabilia.” Business peaks in the last hour before kick-off. “From three o’clock, I will be based in the Control Room. I liaise with Safety Officer Paul Tipping and Steve Beane. There is a chance to catch up on how systems are working, whether there have been any turnstile issues. I am also in the right

place if there are any safety issues I need to be aware of. We may decide to return to specific areas when we review the match during the following week.” Once the game has started, Natalie calculates the attendance. “It is relatively straightforward, a matter of double-checking figures. I tend to announce it as the second half is kicking off. It cannot be any earlier. We might still have people scanning into the ground up to ten minutes before kick-off. I will total the number of away fans as well. The Control Room will pass the details on to the police at the ground, Dale Dixon needs the total to announce on the Big Screen and media men Will Watt and Sam Duffy will pass it down the press box.” Manchester United fan Natalie gets to watch the game more in the second half, most likely still in the Control Room. Then it is back down to the shop as the game ends. “We re-open for about twenty minutes after the game. There will be some merchandise sold but normally it’s away tickets for the next game. The success so far this season has definitely affected things positively in terms of revenue. I will finally leave after a brief summary chat with Steve Beane.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 11

ACADEMY&DEVELOPMENTSQUAD STUARTMURDOCH

Full Time

AN UPDATE FROM THE ACADEMY

As we start a New Year it is important to reflect on what we have achieved in the past six months. Having been given the go ahead by the EFL to set up our Category 3 Academy in June, by September we had not only set up teams from 9 to 16 year-olds, but had employed 16 new members of staff and started to take our place in a very competitive games programme. Not only are thanks go to the Chairman for making this all possible, the staff for their commitment but also to the parents for the many hours they spend supporting their boys at training and driving to far flung venues like Carlisle, Shrewsbury and Walsall! We now look forward to the next year where we hope to establish our Academy, improve our players through hard work and good coaching and above all, enjoy the journey.

UNDER21S

PAUL MURRAY

NEXTFIXTURE

The Development Squad had a great win on Tuesday against Morecambe to progress to the last four of the Lancashire FA Cup. We were without three or more starters for the game, with most of the second year scholars getting a chance. You can only beat what’s in front of you but we are really pleased with the result. We look forward to the draw with anticipation.

UNDER18S

NATHAN ROONEY

The Youth team returned to their league programme on Saturday with a home fixture against Shrewsbury. A poor 1 st half saw us down 3-0 but a much better 2 nd half performance brought two goals from Dan Mooney and Gerrard Garner and in the end we were unfortunate not to get at least a point from the game. Lewis Baines and Dan Mooney stepped up to play for the Development Squad in midweek against Burnley and our 2 nd year scholars must be looking to step up and make an impact at that level in the second half of the season.

I’m really pleased with how the players have developed across all age groups. We’ve got some exciting fixtures for the Under 16’s in January, with Category 1 side Blackburn Rovers visiting Poolfoot Farm and an away fixture at Category 2 team Bolton Wanderers. I’m looking forward to having the lads back in training this week with Bury at the weekend.

FOUNDATIONPHASE

JOEY NEWSON

All the boys worked really hard in the first part of the season and even though across the ages of the Foundation we didn’t win a high percentage of games, we were very competitive. Clubs that have been in the Academy system for many years have been impressed not only with our facilities, but how quickly we have adapted to academy football. WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 21
