Spots to visit in EDINBURGH

Edinburgh Castle Perched on top of an extinct volcano, the majestic Edinburgh Castle towers above the rest of the city.

A heavily fortified complex, it has guarded the Scottish capital for centuries. Today, however, it is open to visitors, who can explore the rich history of the castle, gaze across the beautiful city below and the wild Scottish landscape beyond, as well as see the daily tradition of the One O’Clock Gun, where, since 1861, a cannon has been fired to let the merchant ships know that it is 1pm.

Holyrood Palace While the Edinburgh Castle marks one end of the famous Royal Mile, the royal residence of Holyrood Palace is located at the other end of it.

Strolling past all the shops, churches and charming old buildings along the way, you’ll arrive at a wonderful palace that is located at the foot of the wild landscape of Arthur’s Seat. Open to visitors, you can wander around the beautiful rooms and discover both the story behind the palace, as well as the wider history of Scotland and the Scottish and English kings and queens who have resided here.

Arthur’s Seat and Holyrood Park A vast park that extends from the Holyrood Palace, the peak of Arthur’s Seat offers views of the city, rivalled only by the vistas available from Edinburgh Castle. This grass-clad cliff that marks the south-eastern end of the city, can be traversed on foot through an easy-to-follow path, but also reached easily by car, via a road that runs behind it. Offering glimpses of Scotland’s beautiful, serene landscape, Arthur’s Seat and the rest of the royal Holyrood Park is a perfect place to spend a few hours away from the lively center of the city.

Calton Hill At the end of Princes Street, you’ll find a ruin that is known officially as the National Monument of Scotland, and informally as Edinburgh’s Folly.

Originally designed to be a true replica of a Greek temple, the sponsor ran out of money halfway through the project, and the monument today stands as a neo-classical ruin on top of a hill that overlooks the northern parts of Edinburgh. From Calton Hill you can spot the busy harbor of Leith and the many ships that anchor in the waters of the Firth of Forth, as well as the rolling Scottish nature that rises on the other side of the sea.

The New Town Edinburgh’s New Town runs parallel with the Royal Mile, and along the urban arteries of Princes Street and George Street, you can indulge in a spot of shopping or visit some of the many museums that abound here. The National Gallery and the Scott Monument form the eastern end of the tranquil Princes Street Gardens, and at the latter you can scale the heights of the largest monument dedicated to any writer in the world, and take in the views of the New Town that surrounds it. Nearby you will also find the calm Water of Leith, which is a river that runs through the heart of the city and offers the perfect setting for a stroll among Edinburgh’s fine architecture and green gardens.
