I then realized how much of it there was, and it disturbed me as well. How could there be this much garbage on such desolate beaches? It made me realize that no beach is untouched by this crisis, and an idea started to form. How could I make an image interesting enough to make people stop, take a look, and then realize the beauty in the image is also a nightmare?"

Peter de Sève’s work spans four decades and various media, including magazines, books, television commercials, Broadway posters, and character designs for animated feature films. He is perhaps best recognized for his many covers for The New Yorker Magazine and his character designs for the blockbuster Ice Age franchise (Scrat is a veritable international celebrity).

De Sève has also contributed to such films as Finding Nemo, Robots, The Little Prince and The Grinch to name only a few.

His many distinctions include the prestigious Hamilton King Award from the Society of Illustrators and an Emmy Award for best character design in a television show (Sesame Street).

In 2016 he was inducted into the Society of Illustrator’s Hall of Fame, that organization’s highest honor.

SUNSET

Sunset Magazine is a lifestyle magazine focused on life in the Western United States.

Formed in 1898 as a promotional magazine for the Southern Pacific Railroad, the magazine was intended to combat the negative “Wild West” stereotypes about California. The magazine faced early problems after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed the Sunset offices but recovered fairly quickly thereafter.

By 1912 the magazine was doing well enough to purchase Portland-based magazine Pacific Monthly and combined the two to form Sunset: The Pacific Monthly.

Sunset cover art in its early years was of high quality since it was published during the golden age of magazine illustration. Contributors of cover art included Will James, Maynard Dixon and Cornelia Barns, amongst others.

When the New York Subway opened in 1904, its founders declared that the system was a “great public work”, where every design element showed respect for customers and improved the experience of travel through beauty and design.

Continuing on this philosophy, in 1985 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York created the MTA Arts & Design, formerly known as the Arts for Transit and Urban Design. The program commissions art from artists all throughout New York. Since its formation, the MTA Arts & Design has installed art in more than 260 transit stations.

Over 300 artists have been commissioned for the program, including graphic artists, photographers, musicians, and poets.
