Why a Writing Clinic is Important
resently, half of American college students start at community colleges, with a high percentage from economically striving families. These institutions are a critical gateway for minorities, women, and nontraditional students to access technical and STEM pathways. In the same way, HBCUs are a critical hub for STEM workforce development - producing 25% of all African American STEM professionals and approximately half of African American women in STEM. There are current efforts to understand what produces STEM success but rarely from the vantage of these two institutional structures. The faculty within these institutions - which are primarily teaching focused - are a critical component of student success. Understanding, supporting and researching pedagogical practices in these classrooms is needed to ensure that emerging best practices are not lost.
Florida-Caribbean Louis Stokes Regional Center of Excellence (FL-C LSRCE) STEM faculty participants have been provided training in psychosocial interventions built on theories such as, growth mindset and culturally relevant pedagogy with actionable skills and facilitated practice. Invited to the research process, faculty participate in reflective practice of their own teaching within a community of educators (partnering institutions). Additionally, the FL-C LSRCE provides educational research, such as faculty internship opportunities at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL.) This writing clinic will provide faculty facilitated structured time to create resources for others and to channel their work into scholarly products that will bring balance to the discussion of barriers to underrepresented minorities in STEM degrees and careers.
Goals for Our Time Together The FL-C LSRCE writing clinic will promote scholarly work among community college and HBCU STEM faculty establishing routines of writing, facilitating structure and providing peer reviews/ feedback from peers.
Goal:
The goal of this effort is to provide training and support to STEM faculty members through vetted best practices for effective writing, build a community of scholars for accountability and create structured space with time to focus on drafting writing products.
Learning Objectives:
1. STEM faculty will learn psychobehavioral strategies for boosting writing productivity. 2. STEM faculty will plan and engage in structured writing periods focused on one project to practice psychobehavioral techniques. 3. STEM faculty will share aspects of the process of product development with assigned teams for feedback, accountability and collaboration.
Program Outcomes:
1. All STEM faculty will develop a draft product and timeline for product completion. 2. The group will develop one collaborative idea for dissemination of products. 3. STEM faculty will identify at least 3 hours/week to devote to writing.

Session 5 - Continuing the Momentum: Finishing Your Homework
11:15a.m.-12:00 p.m. Reflection and Closing Dr. Tamara Bertrand Jones Dr. Jhenai Chandler Dr. Lawanda Cummings
Session Descriptions From Surviving to Thriving: Developing Synergy in Academia In this session, participants will learn how to develop a holistic approach to their work in academia. The synergy between understanding their life’s purpose, its alignment to the work they do daily, and the connection between the product they have chosen for the week. We will prioritize and center our teaching purpose and develop a research agenda centered on synergy of mind, body and spirit. “Everything We Do is Research”: Transforming Research or Teaching Into Publication In this session, participants will identify how all of the work they do - teaching, service, writing can be translated into research. We will discuss the ways that teaching, service, advising, and of course research (empirical or conceptual) can all be (re)imagined for publication. At the end of this session, participants will identify one teaching or non-research project that they could use for future dissemination. Getting Your Work Out: The Dissemination Process Participants will learn about the dissemination process, including the peer-reviewed presentation and publication process. In discussing presentations, we will identify relevant STEM and STEM education conferences and encourage participants to identify a conference they can submit a proposal related to their selected product. Additionally, this session will focus on journals articles, book manuscripts and other potentially collaborative products to provide STEM faculty clarity about the publishing process. We will discuss how each product type undergoes a unique (peer) review process and how to respond along the way to publication. Creating Synergy: Personal Habits for Integrating Consistent Writing In this session, participants will explore myths about writing and blocks to a consistent writing practice. We will explore writing habits that can be integrated into their schedules to facilitate time management, regular writing, critical reflection, and overall better mind/body/spirit integration. Continuing the Momentum: Finishing Your Homework Participants will develop a plan for finishing their product and publication process. They will create a schedule for implementing regular writing, check-ins with their Critical Partner and mind/body/spirit integration. Consultation with Facilitator (Individual or with Critical Partner) In these meetings, participants will meet with Dr. Bertrand Jones for a one-on-one consultation, or a small group session, on a topic of their choice. It can be a review/discussion of their product, or a topic related to the writing or publication process. Reflection and Closing Participants will identify at least one learned strategy they can commit to implementing from the retreat and being accountable to their Critical Partner. We will also engage in other reflection and evaluation activities to assess participants’ progress throughout the clinic. We will recognize participants, project staff, and others involved in implementing the FL-C LSRCE clinic.
