Dr. Nadine Burke Harris is an award-winning physician, researcher and public health leader who has spent her career on the front lines of some of our world’s most pressing public health challenges. Her career has been dedicated to serving vulnerable communities and combating the root causes of health disparities. In 2011, she founded the Center for Youth Wellness to advance pediatric medicine, raise public awareness, and transform the way society responds to children exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
Join us for her thought-provoking address that will illuminate the importance of ACEs – and mitigating them - in the work of child and family well-being.
“All Care Must Be Trauma-Informed Care”
Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Adverse Childhood Experiences—known as ACEs— measure the repeated stress of abuse, neglect, parental addiction, mental illness and divorce. Medical evidence shows ACEs have long-term, measurable effects on the development of the brain, immune system, hormonal systems and genetic regulation through the mechanism of toxic stress. These effects unfold over a lifetime to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of ACEs face triple the risk of heart disease and lung cancer. In this talk, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris helps participants understand how common ACEs are, the impact of ACEs on the brain and body, and what science says about the best approaches to preventing and mitigating harmful consequences of toxic stress.
