OUR EXPERIENCE WITH PUBLIC

State Construction Facilities

Our Rich History

Established in 1923, Frank L. Blum Construction Company has been a trusted building partner to owners across North Carolina for generations. With the lowest actively-used general contractor license number in the state of North Carolina - License #18 - the 100-year-old firm has a solid reputation for weathering the most challenging economies, partnering with the most exacting owners, and excelling at the most complex projects. Many iconic and beloved buildings bear the Blum Construction imprint of fine craftsmanship on the original structure or its subsequent renovation or restoration.

The organization’s beginnings were humble. When Frank Blum founded his company, he listed just a few assets, including a Ford automobile, two concrete mixers, one team of mules, and a wagon and harness. After surviving the economic challenges of the 1930s and turbulent war years of the 1940s, the company suffered yet another blow – Mr. Blum’s sudden death in 1954. Employees rallied to save the company, and that first ownership team embraced the challenge of carrying on the Blum tradition of excellence. They recruited and developed a new generation of leaders who would carry the company through the recession and recovery of the 1980s and position it to become one of the most stable and respected businesses in North Carolina.

Looking toward the future, Blum’s original team of managing partners has brought new partners to the forefront. This generation of leadership is now firmly in the saddle, is leading Blum’s expansion throughout the entire state of North Carolina and into southern Virginia, and will take Blum Construction well past its 100th anniversary.

Greene Residence Hall Renovations

East Carolina University

Greenville, NC

The renovation to the existing 1966-era ten story high-rise residence hall included renovations to ensure conformity to modern code requirements for all areas. The modernization of the elevator utilizes an elevator door smoke containment system designed to increase safety and the useful life of the structure. Additional structure reinforcement for the space and the building overall were initial top priorities. The project is part of a comprehensive update to provide a competitive residential housing alternative for students while improving the visual harmony of the West End Neighborhood.

Carmichael Gymnasium Renovation and Addition

North Carolina State University

Raleigh, NC

The Carmichael Gymnasium at North Carolina State University required demolition of the existing east wing, approximately 47,000 square feet, and replacement with an addition of approximately 82,800 square feet. The renovations and addition include recreation, fitness, and specialized activity spaces; classrooms, multi-purpose spaces, offices, and a functional training area. It creates one controlled access point for the complex, makes the second floor of the existing gymnasium building accessible, installs a sprinkler system, and replaces alarm systems throughout the entire complex.
