Our Rich History
Established in 1923, Frank L. Blum Construction Company has been a trusted building partner to owners across North Carolina for generations. With the lowest actively-used general contractor license number in the state of North Carolina - License #18 - the 98-year-old firm has a solid reputation for weathering the most challenging economies, partnering with the most exacting owners, and excelling at the most complex projects. Many iconic and beloved buildings bear the Blum Construction imprint of fine craftsmanship on the original structure or its subsequent renovation or restoration.

The organization’s beginnings were humble. When Frank Blum founded his company, he listed just a few assets, including a Ford automobile, two concrete mixers, one team of mules, and a wagon and harness. After surviving the economic challenges of the 1930s and turbulent war years of the 1940s, the company suffered yet another blow –Mr. Blum’s sudden death in 1954. Employees rallied to save the company, and that first ownership team embraced the challenge of carrying on the Blum tradition of excellence. They recruited and developed a new generation of leaders who would carry the company through the recession and recovery of the 1980s and position it to become one of the most stable and respected businesses in North Carolina.
Looking toward the future, Blum’s original team of managing partners has brought new partners to the forefront. This generation of leadership is now firmly in the saddle, is leading Blum’s expansion throughout the entire state of North Carolina and into southern Virginia, and will take Blum Construction well past its 100th anniversary.
Campus Construction Experts
Blum
Construction has been improving higher education campuses across the state of North Carolina for nearly a century. Each campus brings with it a unique set of constraints that must be understood and planned around in consultation with the client and their user groups. Our process has always been simple in concept.
• First seek to understand. Assemble the stakeholders and listen to their concerns, challenges and constraints. Then articulate the goals of the phasing and logistics, as we understand them, to the stakeholders for their agreement.
• Provide solutions with alternatives. Once the team has a firm understanding of the challenges, create a series of alternatives for the review of the stakeholders. Clearly articulate the pros and cons of each alternative.
• Listen. Our greatest asset in creating plans for campus construction are the stakeholders that will use the spaces. Listen to their reactions to the alternatives and adjust as necessary to find the most agreeable solution.
• Over communicate the solution. Once the final plan has been agreed to by the stakeholders, over communicate the solution to the entire user group to limit surprises during construction and gain buy in.

North Campus Expansion

Wake Forest University
Winston-Salem, NC
307,000 square feet
488 student beds
When Wake Forest University began a $90 million expansion that would result in four new buildings within a three-year period, it turned to Frank L. Blum Construction Company. The construction of all four buildings, totaling 307,000 square feet, would take place in a relatively small footprint. The project site would form what would be known as North Campus, an attractive collection of buildings to greet visitors coming through the campus’ northern entrance. The project required much careful planning and creative problem solving to incorporate elements that tied into the historic campus, yet resulted in a model of sustainability for the campus and the community.
The site required relocation of almost all campus utilities - main campus water feed, sanitary sewer, chilled water, fiber optics, high voltage electrical, medium voltage electrical, and storm drainage before construction could begin. The process required intense coordination with WFU Facilities, the City of Winston- Salem, Forsyth County Utilities Commission, and the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
During the summer of 2012, the site footprint of the first phase was significantly reduced to allow the improved road to reopen to traffic. Due to accurate preplanning, Blum and the subcontracting team relocated staging and lay down areas, which accommodated the change in student access to campus with no time lost in the construction schedule. Blum credits exceptionally close teamwork, including facilities supervisors, designers, and end user groups, from the very beginning.

Baseball Clubhouse
Wake Forest University
Winston-Salem, NC
Blum Construction has been pleased to partner with Wake Forest University on many of its sports facilities. The Baseball Clubhouse consists of a new state-of the-art clubhouse, batting cages, pitching lab, and other amenities for the players.

Crews excavated approximately 40,000 cubic yards of earth to make way for the two-story, 34,000-square-foot facility. The existing concession stand and about one third of the stadium’s bleachers were demolished in order to accommodate the lower level of the building which opens directly onto a new dugout near third base.
Wake Forest’s new state-of the-art facility rivals any collegiate baseball program in the country and will allow the University to recruit the best high school players for their program.

Student Center
Salem College
Winston-Salem, NC
Salem College’s new Student Center was the first new building built on their campus in decades. The building was constructed between three existing buildings in the heart of their active campus which led to the project team calling it “a ship in a bottle.” The building houses a large living room, study area, cafe, student organization spaces, book store, theater, and meeting spaces. The exterior of the building is designed to compliment the historic Moravian architecture of the campus.
