HEAR THE DIFFERENCE

HOW TO USE: Easy as 1,2,3!

1.Attach headphones.

2.Press the green button to turn on.

3.Press the Black “T” button for the Hearing Loop. Adjust volume with the (+) and (-) buttons

Info on Hearing Loop:

•About 1 in 4 Americans —some 8.4 million—have hearing aids, according to a 2018 poll.

•A hearing loop magnetically transfers the microphone or TV sound signal to hearing aids and cochlear implants that have a tiny, inexpensive “telecoil” receiver. This transforms the instruments into in-the-ear loudspeakers that deliver sound customized for one’s own hearing loss.

•69% hearing models—including in-the-ear models and conventional behind-the-ear models.

•A form of assistive listening, including hearing loops, come with portable receivers and headsets.

•What is a telecoil?

-A tiny coil of wire around a core that will induce an electric current in the coil when its in the presence of a changing magnetic field.

- Normally, a hearing aid "listens" with its microphone, then amplifies what it “hears”.

-A telecoil “hears” a magnetic signal which represents sound.

-On telecoil-equipped hearing aids and CIs, the wearer must “turn on or “switch to” telecoil mode. Some users prefer a mode that only uses the telecoil and not the microphones when they are in telecoil mode, and other users prefer a combination of telecoil and microphones.

Major Benefits:

•Can use your own hearing aid that is geared to your particular needs.

• Don’t have to take extra time to go find hearing aid assistance or configure it to work best for you.

A MESSAGE FROM LISA K. BRYANT, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Once upon a time, in a bustling city where the lights shimmered like stars, there was a magnificent theater called “The Enchanted Stage.” Or, as it was known to the locals, Flat Rock Playhouse. It was renowned for its captivating performances, where the complex and beautiful tales of humanity came to life right before the audience’s eyes. In this enchanting theater, the storytellers, actors, and the technological wizards worked hand in hand to create a truly immersive experience. Every show was a masterpiece, blending the power of performance and cutting-edge technology.

One night, a young girl named Lily and her family were fortunate enough to secure tickets to a special performance at The Enchanted Stage. The show, titled “Threads of Time,” promised to take the audience on an extraordinary journey through history, celebrating the triumphs and tragedies of humanity. As Lily stepped into the theater, she was mesmerized by the grandeur of the stage. She took her seat, eagerly waiting for the show to begin. The lights dimmed, and the curtains slowly rose, revealing a scene that transported the audience back in time.

The story began with a brave knight riding across a lush green meadow, ready to battle a fearsome dragon. The audience gasped as the knight lunged forward, slashing his sword through the air, but instead of a dragon, a breathtaking holographic display brought the mythical creature to life. The theater walls transformed into a medieval castle, and the audience found themselves immersed in the sights and sounds of a bygone era. The spellbound spectators marveled as the actors fearlessly enacted scenes of knights, kings, and queens. Words of love, honor, and betrayal echoed through the theater.

As the show progressed, the tales shifted, taking the audience through the Renaissance period, the age of revolutions, and even the wonders of space exploration. Each era seamlessly transitioning into the next, thanks to the awe-inspiring stagecraft and the talents of the designers, craftsmen, and performers. Lily’s eyes sparkled with wonder as the poignant stories shared, both tragic and joyous, touched her heart and left a lasting impression.

As the final act approached, Lily realized that the true magic of “Threads of Time” was not just the technology or the performances. It was the way in which the stories resonated with the audience, reminding them of the shared humanity that we all carry within. With a standing ovation from the captivated crowd, the show came to an end, leaving the audience in awe of the incredible power of live theater. And so, “The Enchanted Stage” at Flat Rock Playhouse continued to weave its spell on all those who entered its doors, using the harmonious blend of performance and technology to showcase the timeless beauty and depth of the human spirit. For in these stories, we learn, we feel, and we discover that the connections between past and present can never be lost.

The 2024 season at Flat Rock Playhouse centers exploring the profound beauty and devastating complexity of our collective humanity, and endeavors to celebrate the role of technology and design in enriching storytelling. I hope that you, like Lilly, will relish the magic and impact of live theatre, crafted with passion and excellence by a team of dedicated Artists and Artisans right here on the great Flat Rock. Welcome to the show!

A MESSAGE FROM MANAGING DIRECTOR, SAM GOODRUM

Welcome to Flat Rock Playhouse and welcome to our 2024 Mainstage Season! We are excited to host you. Whether you are here for the first time or hundredth, each show you see here is an opportunity for us to wow you, astound you, and hopefully make you feel and think.

Producing live theatre takes a village. It is not only the talented craftsmen and artists that bring shows to life from the paint on the scenery, to the actors you watch and the music you hear, but our patrons as well. It is through the collective experience of live theatre that we as a community grow and harness that power for impactful change.

Here at Flat Rock Playhouse, we believe in that power. We believe in the power of shared experiences and shared learning. From our education wing at Playhouse Jr. which provides K through Adult education, to the shows you’ll witness here on our Mainstage, our mission is to support lifelong learning and growth. But it takes the whole community to make that growth possible. To our patrons, volunteers, and donors, thank you for being a part of FRP’s 2024 season! So again welcome, we look forward to growing with you this year!

A MESSAGE FROM THE JERSEY BOYS DIRECTOR CANDI BOYD-KAITILA

“Jersey Boys, to me, is about family. There’s a quote in the show that Frankie says which is, “Family is Everything” but I think it’s more complex than that. These real people that we portray in our show had their real families, their road families, the neighborhood was family, not to mention their mob “family.” No matter what family they meant, their love and loyalty ran deep... even if times weren’t always easy. I have worked on Jersey Boys in some capacity (first as an actor, then a choreographer and now a director) since 2009, and this community of show people have become my chosen family, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Rick is currently writing a musical for Disney Theatricals with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, based on the film Make Believe, and Super Fly (co-written with Seth Zvi Rosenfeld), directed and choreographed by modern dance legend, Bill T. Jones. Heartfelt thanks to those whose work in the theatre makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers and Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now.

BOB GAUDIO (COMPOSER) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of the Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence

is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for the Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership…on a handshake.

BOB CREWE (LYRICIST). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writer-producers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957 they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry, “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie” – all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesly Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film, “Barbarella.” Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with Music to Watch Girls By. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. They also co-wrote Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” (#1, July ’75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June ’01)…David Ritz

CANDI BOYD (DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER) Candi hails from Pittsburgh, PA and moved to NYC to become a performer in 2008, where she lives to this day. She’s been in numerous tv shows, films, and commercials, as well as getting to perform on the Tony’s, at the Super Bowl and the Thanksgiving Day Parade! She had the privilege to perform in the original production of JERSEY BOYS on Broadway as their Universal Swing for 10 years; Playing all 3 women in 7 companies in NYC and all over the world. She was entrusted as a Dance Captain, who helped note, direct and clean the show, and this is where she caught the directing and choreographing bug. Since then, Candi has directed/associate directed and choreographed over 9 shows, including 2 Off-Broadway shows, “DOG MAN: THE MUSICAL” and “FIVE! THE PARODY MUSICAL” which are both still running to rave reviews. Candi is (clearly) not Italian, however, the story of JERSEY BOYS resonates with her so deeply; A tight knit community where hard work, talent and luck created the unlikely hero story of an entire generation! Many folks who have been a part of Jersey Boys for its long and successful history repeat the famous line from the show, “FAMILY IS EVERYTHING.” Candi is so excited to bring this incredible story to Flat Rock Playhouse and add to that family. Special thanks to Lisa, Jim, Taylor, and My amazing Husband and kiddos for letting Mom continue to pursue her passions! @candiboyd_

THE LEIMAN

Find peace and tranquility in this new garden of remembrance.

Flat Rock Playhouse’s founder, Robroy Farquhar, settled in this beautiful mountain region to celebrate the joys of nature and create a safe haven to practice his craft. In 2021, we continue to embrace the quiet serenity of our beautiful surroundings with The Leiman Garden of Remembrance.

David and Sharon Leiman donated this hallowed ground in memory of the six million Jews and millions of other men, women, and children murdered by Nazi Germany. The garden invites us all to remember, learn, reflect and NEVER FORGET.

David and Sharon first came to Flat Rock Playhouse in 2016 for the all-star hit production, Million Dollar Quartet. We are honored and overjoyed to call this dynamic duo part of the Flat Rock Playhouse team of patrons, donors, and volunteers.
